Despite the wealth of information available on phase equilibria of oxide systems there remainmany gaps and inconsistencies in our knowledge base. From an industry perspective there is anongoing need to adequately describe the phase chemistry of slag systems in order to optimizeprocess performance and improve productivity. Since this chemical behaviour cannot be predictedfrom first principles it follows there is also an ongoing need for accurate experimental data. The advances made in recent years in the capabilities of sophisticated analytical and measurement equipment have made it possible to develop new experimental techniques for the direct determination of phase equilibria in low order and complex multi-component slag systems. In addition the development of powerful computer modelling tools makes it possible to provide more comprehensive descriptions of the phase chemistry, to present the information in a range of perspectives, and to critically analyse the various types of related thermodynamic and structural information available. This review provides an overview of the types of information that can be used to determine phase equilibria in slags systems, analyses the influence of uncertainty and the relative importance of these types of data, and describes the advantages and limitations of the various experimental techniques that can be employed to obtain this information. Examples of recent studies are provided that demonstrate how an integrated approach to the determination of phase equilibria in complex systems, involving the use of targeted experimental studies and systematic thermodynamic model development, can lead to a better utilization of our current research capabilities and resources and more accurate descriptions of these systems. L&M have been involved on the Shotover since 1980 when we joined Jack and Barney Ryan, who had started in 1972 with gold at $45 per ounce after a successful career as roading and demolition contractors in Christchurch. The first 85 tonne plant was a typical NZ trammel-riffle table plant with an armour plated hull for surviving Shotover floods, and was fed by a 53 tonne UH20 excavator. All this gear had to be carted in over the Skippers road on a small truck or sledge for the heavy loads. This operation was successful and generated the cash flow to sample the lower section of river and plan a second plant. To reduce fine gold losses this was planned to be a jig recovery plant and also included a vibrating screen which saved space and weight over a trammel. There are five flowlines of primary jigs and one secondary, followed by two Knudsen bowls for cleanup.

This paper presents the authors? personal experiences in the design and operation of moly separation circuits in copper-moly concentrators. Topics discussed include column cells versus mechanical cells; use of nitrogen; use of CO2 and sulfuric acid for pH modification; and general equipment selection and sizing. A benchmarking of main operating parameters for industrial plants is presented. Upgrading curves for commercial column and mechanical cleaning circuits are also presented, showing that with average flotation kinetics and rougher concentrate grades, technical grade concentrates can be easily achieved with five column cells operating in counter-current configuration.

This investigation was undertaken to obtain basic information necessary for the design and operation of a plant for recovering metallic values from nickeliferous laterite and serpentine of the Philippine Islands. It was divided into three parts: (1) Mineralogical studies and preliminary mineral dressing tests; (2) electric smelting of the ores, upgrading of ferronickel by blowing with oxygen, smelting laterite slag to produce crude iron, and the production of mild steel; and (3) nickel and cobalt recovery from upgraded ferronickel. Results of the investigation indicate that it should be feasible to recover nickel, iron, and possibly cobalt products from the laterite and ferro-nickel from the serpentine. Mineralogical studies were made on representative fractions of the laterite and serpentine tonnage samples and on five selected samples; mineral dressing tests were made only on laterite. The nickel occurs principally associated with hydrous iron oxides and chemically combined with serpentine; garnierite was the only discrete nickel mineral identified, and it was found in a highly decomposed serpentine. The bulk of the cobalt was found in wadlike manganese oxide material. Approximately twice as much chromite was found in the laterite as in the serpentine, By mineral dressing techniques, laterite was separated into two fractions: one fraction contained over 90 percent of the nickel and cobalt, and 83 percent of the iron; the other fraction contained 74 percent of the chromium. A cobalt concentrate (1.1 percent Co) was produced by a scrubbing and sizing procedure.

In the repetitive electrowinning of tungsten from scheelite, the calcium impurity buildup in the molten electrolyte results in decreased metal purity, metal recovery, and current efficiency. Periodic addition of B2O3, which reacts with the lime liberated from the scheelite, more than tripled the life of the electrolyte in winning 99.9-percent-pure tungsten and also reduced the number of units of electrolyte required per unit of tungsten recovered from six to four.

Crystalline Mg(OH)Cl and amorphous Mg2(OH)3C1 were successfully isolated from a hydrolyzed molten salt electrolyte sample in this work, It was found that the chemical form and crystallinity of the hydroxylchloride were controlled by the cooling rate of the molten sample when it was taken. Crystalline Mg(OH)Cl could only be obtained by cooling the molten electrolyte sample at a rate not faster than 0.6 °C/min, Upon more rapid cooling, the hydroxylchloride species precipitated as Mg2(OH)3Cl, The behavior of these solid hydroxylchlorides when contacted with fresh and non-hydrolyzed molten electrolyte at 550°C was also examined, It was found that the Mg(OH)Cl rapidly dissolved in the hot electrolyte and did not decompose into MgO at that temperature as would be expected from the literature, The dissolution rate of solid Mg2(OH)3Cl was found to be so slow by comparison that it resulted in the complete decomposition into MgO which thereafter was incorporated into the electrolyte as a suspended solid phase rather than dissolution.

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific- indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1971 at 5 million tons valued at $200 million, averaging $40.00 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, calcium carbonate, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface smoothness, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 3rd edition of Industrial Rocks and Minerals, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses.

A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

The paper focuses on construction of a 2.55-km (8,365-ft) long, 2.4-m (8-ft)diameter storm drain tunnel in Evansville, Indiana. The tunnel was driven through saturated soft ground varying from clay to fine sand. The paper presents: an overview of design and design rational including specific EPB machine requirements; the contractor’s proposed and accepted alternative construction methods and TBM design; and construction issues and performance. Some of the key points discussed are the use of the TBM in different operational modes for alternative ground conditions, the effectiveness of dewatering systems, production rates, and issues such as surface settlements and gas.

The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850s has been an estimated 480 t (15 Moz) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 t of gold for 1989. Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.

Slags and fluxes used in metallurgical processes are typically made up of oxides (especially silicates), with additions of fluoride and carbonaceous matter. Despite the efforts made towards understanding the role of slags in various processes, little information is available on the structure of these slags. Tools such as X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and electron microscopy could be used for this purpose. This paper is based on an ongoing spectroscopic and structural investigation of slags and related materials. Spectroscopic studies of various commercial slags (predominantly ferrous), ores, glass and related materials, covering a wide range of compositions, have been carried out to understand the structure. The infrared spectra were recorded, predominantly, using FTIR spectrometer (Bruker IFS 66U) spanning 4000 to 100 cm-1using the KBr pellet method. The resolution was typically 4 cm-1. The spectral outputs have been compiled in terms of bands present (corresponding to different bonds) and then compared with the typical bands expected for such bonds. Efforts are in progress to identify the trends with respect to the chemical composition?for example, the effects of SiO2, Al2O3, and non-bridging oxygens. Data obtained so far indicate some trends such as (i) a shift in the Si-O band (969 to 1099 cm-1) towards a higher wave number with increasing silica content (almost 2 to 92 weight percentage) and (ii) further strong shifts as a function of the alumina content. The structural variations occurring in pellets of finely divided mixtures of iron ore and coke breeze, metallized by firing at elevated temperatures, have been examined microscopically. For any given pellet composition, time and temperature are the two most important factors in determining the development of the bonding processes.INTRODUCTIONThe success of sintering and pelletizing processes in the agglomeration of fine iron ores for blast furnace use has brought about rapid changes in thinking relative to methods of preparing furnace burdens. Increases in productivity with the use of sinter emphasize the advantages of a stable, uniformly sized furnace feed. Current practice is to produce a self-fluxing sinter containing most of the lime requirements of the furnace incorporated as a stable medium (Figgis and Charker, 1962). The elimination of fine material from the burden allows greater stack permeability and smoother operation.Sintering and pelletizing of iron ores with or without the incorporation of fluxing compounds has conditioned operators to the extent that it is now considered possible that all components of the burden may eventually be beneficiated in one form or another. Investigations are in hand to improve the quality and sizing of coke, which occupies the major part of the burden volume (Callcott, Innes and Brown, 1961; Innes, Gregory and Worner, 1963). Interest is also being revived in methods of pre-reducing iron ores prior to charging to the furnace (Hansen, Melcher and Fine, 1961). This research program was a theoretical and experimental study to improve understanding of the mechanisms of flame extinguishment in methane-coal dust-air-suppressant mixtures. This final report is a summary of work conducted during this grant, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. Work under this new grant closely followed a recently completed contract for the Bureau of Mines that was conducted at this laboratory, and results of the earlier contract are also summarized in this report, as required in the grant work statement. The experimental effort was concentrated on supplementing the limited data available to describe laminar flames in methane-coal-air-suppressant mixtures. The theoretical effort was devoted to developing a comprehensive model that could be used to explain and extrapolate the experimental data. Selected for study were the following flames: Methane-air; methane-air plus KHCO , KNO3, K C204, KBr, Al203 or Monnex; methane-coal dust-air; coal dust-air with size, volatiles content, and concentration as variables, and coal dust-air plus KHCO3, KN03, KBr, NaCl or CaC03.

Because of drilling, completion, and workover practices, the permeability around a wellbore generally is different from the permeability of the formation. The zone with the altered permeability is called "skin" and its effect on the pressure or flow behavior of the well is called "skin effect". Hawkinsl has shown that the radius and the permeability of this zone are related to the skin by: If the permeability in the skin zone is less than that of the formation, the skin is positive; if it is more than that of the formation, the skin is negative. If the two permeabilities are equal, s is zero; that is, there is no skin. Van Everdingen2 and Hurst3 have given mathematical solutions to the case of a zone of reduced permeability around the wellbore. This skin effect is illustrated in Fig. 1. They treat the positive skin as a zone of reduced permeability of infinitesimal thickness around the wellbore. When applied to a well with negative skin, however, their solutions lead to the calculated flowing well pressure which is smaller than the formation pressure, i.e., an injection situation. This is a physical contradiction. In this paper, it is shown that this mathematical difficulty can be overcome by assuming an effective wellbore radius larger than the actual wellbore. Existing solutions2"4 are modified to include the effect of an enlarged wellbore radius, and thus enable the engineer to deal with negative as well as positive skins. The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

The thermodynamic and chemical properties of SrSO4 and SrS in a gaseous flow of CO and CO2 at high temperature are discussed. The thermodynamic analysis of the system was made using data from the literature. The results obtained from the thermodynamic analysis were experimentally verified using the thermogravimetric technique. The experimental results suggest the formation of a complex compound between SrO and SrSO4. It was also found a change in the chemical mechanism of the process between SrSO4 and CO-CO2 and in the chemical mechanism of the process between SrS and pure CO2.

Site specific geotechnical data, deposit characteristics and method of mining are key factors when assessing an appropriate slope design philosophy. Mining geotechnics should be viewed as an iterative design process linked closely with mine planning, development and operational safety constraints. This case study presents geotechnical investigations for slope design at Macraes Flat Gold Mine using kinematic, probabilistic and economic analyses tempered with knowledge of site specific conditions. The recommended designs not only reduce early waste stripping tonnages but also provide data to optimise final walls.

This paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. Pipes Examined The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from 3/4 in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often IOO to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is Ioo° to 160°F. Water Supples The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table 1 are characterized by relatively low hardness, 10, alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive.
