Falls of Ground is one of the highest causes of incidents, accidents and fatal injuries in our mines today. These falls of ground may occur as soon as the face is exposed after blasting or after machine cutting. The falls of ground can also occur after support has been installed. There are many reasons why these falls occur before and after supporting of the face. It is therefore important to support the exposed face as soon as possible to prevent the falls of ground. It is also very important to support the face with the correct support products and to support the face as designed and required by the mining engineers. The possible reasons for falls of ground, possible support methods and the products available will be discussed in this presentation. In typical conventional narrow vein stoping operations, the use of conventional temporary support components to offer some support to workers, whilst the permanent and generally more elaborate support system gets installed or constructed, still results in injuries to people. The acoustic signals emitted from a laboratory-scale ball mill were used for the estimation of the comminution of two complex sulphide ores, viz. Merensky and UG2 ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The digital acoustic signals were transformed to power spectral densities that could be related to particle size distributions (-75 µm to 4000 µm) in the mill by use of continuum regression. This approach is more general than principal component regression methods or Kalman filtering used previously and resulted in significantly more accurate calibration in the case of the Merensky ore, where approximately 93.4% of the variance in the particle size distributions could be explained. With fewer data available, the variance in the particle size distributions in the UG2ore could be explained less accurately (82.4%), but still satisfactorily. In addition, smaller particle sizes (less than 300 µm) could be modelled more accurately in the case of the UG2 ore.

The purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. Linings for Boreholes The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. The special bricks are laid in cement, six to a circle, around a lubricated pipe used as a form, and lowered in sections inside the large drive pipe; the bottom section is seated in a socket drilled in the solid rock, having the same inside

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Sacramento District awarded a $64 million construction contract in February 2020 to the Maloney Odin Joint Venture for 3 mi (4.8 km) of levee improvements along the Sacramento River East Levee (SREL). This project kicked off approximately $1.5 billion of work to upgrade levees along the American and Sacramento Rivers and widen the Sacramento Weir and Bypass. The project received the 2021 ASCE Region 9 Project of the Year Award. Contract 1 improved levees along five segments of the river, the longest segment being a 2 mi (3.2 km) reach from Garcia Bend Park to the Freeport Intake Facility in the Pocket neighborhood of Sacramento.

The incentive to control coal flotation circuits arises because of disturbances, from plant operating practices and variations in feed coal characteristics, which result in large amounts of fine coal being lost in circuit tailings streams and lower grade concentrates being produced. Additionally, the flowrates and compositions of con-centrates and tailings streams can have significant effects on dewater-ing brocesses. A universal control strategy for these circuits cannot be developed. Rather, three major groups of variables must be con-sidered during strategy development: coal characteristics; circuit design and operating practice; and the variables selected to control the process. The second. and third groups-are discussed in this paper and examples from studies in operating plants are presented.

This report is a general summary of pertinent data on the manufacture and use of synthetic ammonia products. It provides a condensed summary of the potentialities of a synthetic ammonia industry in North Dakota for Federal, State, and private organizations that may be interested in helping to develop an integrates synthetic ammonia and fertilizer industry. The report contains discussions of: (1) Materials used in the manufacture of nitrogenous fertilizers, nitric acid, and urea; (2) National production, imports, exports, and consumption; (3) the ammonia industry, location, capacity of plants; (4) processes used in manufacturing synthetic ammonia, nitric acid, and urea; (5) other potential industries; and (6) analyses of manufaturing and plant cosh;. Additional information on industrial compounds from ammonia and plant nutrients removed by crops is given in Appendixes 1 and 2. Synthetic ammonia is one of the primary ingredients in fertilizers. Resources required in synthetic ammonia manufacture are available in North Dakota. Hydrogen is available from the petroleum and natural gas resources, particularly in the Williston Basin, and from the large lignite resources in the State. Hydrogen can be produced from lignite by a gasification process developed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak.

A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column, and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. The results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed.

A process has been developed to recover gold and copper from two waste materials at the Bougainville Copper Limited mine in Papua New Guinea. It involves the bioleaching, in reactors, of a pyrite concentrate to liberate refractory gold and generate sulphuric acid, ferric sulphate and biomass for bacterial leaching of a chalcopyritic waste rock dump. Gold is to be recovered by cyanide leaching and copper by solvent extraction/electrowinning. The reactor bioleaching was developed in continuously operated reactors of 1 m3 capacity by CRA Advanced Technical Development at Cockle Creek, while the dump leaching was developed in 750 kg columns on site at Bougainville Copper Limited. The process was to be piloted on site.

Many long conveyors, 2 - 20 km plus, have been installed over the past 10 years. Conveyor belt life, depending on the conveyor length and material handled, will generally range from 10 - 15 years. To replace long conveyors splicing one or two rolls into a conveyor run on an intermittent basis can be prolonged in an operating system involving considerable downtime and scheduling problems. This paper presents some of the methods used to- date and highlights forward planning for such an event. Special belt handling equipment required and the execution of a belt change operation are described in detail. Wright Engineers Limited have worked in collaboration with Canada Conveyor to design and implement the methods described herein.

This Bureau of Mines publication comprises 19 tables of data concerning domestic barite production and consumption, imports, and world production for the years 1880 to 1976. Barite is vital to the petroleum industry, with 90 percent of domestic consumption used in drilling muds. Domestic production has traditionally fallen short of consumption: in 1976, 41 percent of the 2.2 million tons consumed was imported. World production of barite increased from 269,000 tons in 1923 to 5.2 million tons in 1975 but is in danger of falling short of future demand. The compiled data provide a comprehensive base of information.

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

"Clays are common ingredients in pharmaceutical products both as exclplents and active substances. Clay minerals are naturally cationic exchangers and they may undergo ion exchange with basic drugs in solution. Smectites, and montmorillonite have been studied due their high cation exchange capacity as compared to other silicates. Recently a patented study reports the use of attapulgite as the encapsulating agents both for the protecting the active substance and modulating release into the body. Some clays such as kaolinite, smectites, talc, etc are also used as dermatological protectors. Sepiolite and smectites have the ability to form complexes with organic compounds with absorb ultra-violet radiation, enabling them to be used in sun screens with protection factors. The objective of this work is to characterize the attapulgite in order to study the potential use of this clay material in the human health.IntroductionSince the begimling of time, nature has served humanity as a source of various raw materials. Among these, clays such as kaolinite and ilitte are common ingredients in the tile production. Recently, special clay materials have been investigated in order to identifY new potential uses of these class of materials. Clay materials are natural raw material and have excellent properties such as low toxicity, good biocompatibility, making them a good material to be used in biological applications. Attapulgite (paligorskite) and sepiolite is so called special clays. These special clay materials are very sin1ilar and have a great potential to be used in some technological areas due their special catalytic, sorptive and colloidal-rheological properties [1-8]. Recently some works have reported the use of these special clays materials for many applications such as drug delivery, wound dressing, oil absorbent, pesticides, fertilizers [9-12]. Brazil has a significant reserve of attapulgite located in Piaui state, making the study of the potential of this mineral in special areas, very attractive. Attapulgite is classified a fibrous alluminous silicate material and shows the presence of micro pores and channels, fine particle size and high surface area making this material a good candidate alternative material to be used in many industrial applications [6,8,9,11,12]. THE strip industry made rapid strides in regard to both width and gage until about 1922, when the maximum width was about 20 in. In the hot mills, strips of thin gages in wide widths could be pro-duced, but only at a sacrifice of length of coil, con-siderable increase in power, and decreased tonnage out-put on the min. Hot mills, like the Bray sheet mill and the modern strip and skelp mills, demonstrated that . wider strip could readily be rolled, if such a product was desired. The strip manufacturers were really limited in width, not by the hot strip, but by the cold rolling of wide strip. This factor was roll pressure. The diameter of rolls increased as the width of strip increased. For cold rolling strip 20 in. wide, cold rolls were approximately 20 in. diameter. As the rolls became larger, the arc of contact between the rolls and the strip increased approximately, according to the formula, b=\/Rd where b = the width of contact R = roll radius d = total reduction Now the crushing strength of cold steel of low carbon varies from 70,000 to 100,000 lb. per sq. in. With each succeeding pass the crushing strength increases and may approach 250,000 lb., according to the total reduction. The total reduction in cold rolling of low-carbon steel will range from 40 to 70 per cent of the original thickness, usually in about three or four passes. On this basis, assuming a reduction of 20 per cent in one pass, the crushing strength of steel assumed at 120,000 lb., we have a total pressure between rolls, which (assuming that the rolls do not deform) equals: Roll Strip Strip Diameter, Width, Thickness, In. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) FEW authors of treatises and papers on engineering subjects have . given adequate attention to topographic maps.. The statement applies especially to mining engineering in all branches. Even those who have discussed such maps have treated the subject only in a general way. Therefore it is proposed to outline in this paper a few of the uncommon, yet important relationships which topographic maps and their by-product, structure-contour maps, have to modern methods of mining investigation and development when the facts depicted on such maps are properly interpreted. Topography, as suggested by the etymology of the word, menus a detailed description of particular places. Written descriptions have been found less effective than the pictorial representations, therefore attempts have been made in various ways to picture the surface features of places. Lines and shading have been used, hachures drawn, and, finally, the contour topographic map. To a large extent this style of snap is the result of the demands of engineers. It is designed to meet their needs far more than those of the man untrained in engineering. In fact, the average man obtains a better idea of the topography of an area from the hachure system than from contour maps. . Since the maps. have been made chiefly for the use of the engineer, they ought to meet his demands on the one hand, and, on the other, should be used by him to the fullest extent. Such maps, when properly made, accurately portray a portion of the earth's surface and should present the topography better than a personal examination of the area without a map could present it, because the person making such examination views only a limited portion of the surface at a time, and estimates distances only roughly with his eye. Let the engineer consider carefully the fact that in many instances the topographic map is superior to a personal examination of the surface features of a property because the map is based on careful instrumental measurements, whereas the eye gives imperfect data because it can be used merely for the estimation and

WHEN the War Production Board issued its order which will end the use of iron and steel in more than 400 familiar civilian articles, the list of those products formed a fascinating and homeric catalogue of the things we use. Articles for which iron and steel may not be used after a 90-day "tapering-off" period are as workaday as office machinery and as frivolous as cocktail shakers. Mostly they are smaller items-the smallest probably are phonograph needles but in the aggregate they will save tremendous quantities of the metal most needed to win the war. In total war there are no trifles. Interesting proof of this lies in the fact that by eliminating manufacture of blackhead squeezers we shall save 110,000 lb. of steel a year. Out of this steel we might have made four 155-mm. field pieces. We might have made a thousand 3-in. trench mortars, 4400 0.30-caliber machine guns, 55 16-in. shells, 110 200-lb. aerial bombs, or three 15-ton tanks with something left over to arm them.

Research has been conducted over the past three years using the composite anodes versus the lead alloy anodes. The Merrlin composite anodes have shown the improved performance in copper electrowinning versus the lead-calcium-tin anodes. Using the composite anodes a 100-150 mV reduction in anode overpotential has been observed versus the lead alloy anodes in sulfuric acid electrolyte. The composite coating has excellent corrosion inhibiting properties, and reduces or eliminates the formation of manganese oxide scale. Laboratory evidences indicate that, the use of these composite anodes enhances the process of electrowinning by improving the lead alloy corrosion resistance, lowers the electrode potential, reduces the need for cobalt addition, eliminates the anode cleaning, and reduces the generation of acid mist. Field tests are underway.

"There are three distinct producing iron ranges in Minnesota, the Vermilion, Mesabi and Cuyuna. In trend the Vermilion and Mesabi are approximately parallel (E.N.E. and W.S.W.) and about fifteen to twenty miles apart. The Vermilion lies farthest north, near the. Canadian boundary. It is from seventy-five to eighty miles due north of Duluth. The length of its productive part is about twenty miles.The Mesabi Range is from fifty to seventy-five miles north and northwest of Duluth. Its length along the strike is about 110 miles, and the length of its present productive area about eighty miles. The Cuyuna range lies southwest of Duluth nearly ninety miles, and is the last of the Lake Superior iron ranges to be developed. The relative positions of the ranges are shown on an accompanying map. The Mesabi Range is by far the largest producer and contains the largest ore reserves of the three. The Cuyuna is next in quantity of proven ore, and in production since 1916, while the Vermilion is first in average quality of ore.On the west, both Vermilion and Mesabi ranges disappear beneath heavy glacial drift; and on the east, extend into Canada, the so-called Gunflint range near the international boundary being an eastward continuation of the Mesabi formation. This latter range is of no economic importance, however, at present. The exploration and development of the Cuyuna range has proved up a considerable tonnage of manganiferous iron ore, besides ordinary merchantable iron ore."

Customer demand for greater efficiency and reduced operational costs on modern overland conveyors has focused attention on the conveyor belt's rolling resistance properties. Studies have indicated as much as 60% of the power losses on a long horizontal conveyor can be attributed to the indentation of the pulley cover rubber as it passes over idlers. This paper will compare tan delta values of different compounds with large scale rolling resistance test data from the University of Hannover. Results will then be compared to actual power consumption data gathered on several long overland conveyors using identical belt construction except with different pulley cover compounds. Concluding comments will be made indicating substantial operating cost differences based on the rolling resistance of the cover compound.
