Extending an organization?s knowledge base throughout the entire enterprise can improve operations. Until recently, though, field operations were often left out of the information loop, as extending high-bandwidth communications into harsh environments often proved impossible due to thermal extremes, physical hazards and caustic chemicals. However, advances in the design and manufacture of rugged fiberoptic cables have now enabled the successful installation of 10-gigabit transmission links to places such as mining operations. The experience of Consol Energy exemplifies how plant managers can successfully enlist ruggedized tight buffered cables to help carry the efficiency of ERP communications into even the most challenging work environments. ?As part of our ERP implementation, we extended our corporate network underground into our mines using fi beroptic cable,? said Tom Prokop, manager-site support for Consol Energy. ?We?ve actually had rooffalls bury the cable between rocks and still did not lose data communications. Our maintenance personnel are now able to access our ERP system while underground at locations that can be up to 32 km (20 miles) away from their desks or the warehouse. Access to the corporate network allows them to order parts, look at electronic schematics, access monitoring data, no matter where they are in the mine. With a few hundred workers below ground, this immediate access translates into a time-savings that adds up in a hurry.?

The week of Sept. 22, will be a week of convocation of societies in Chicago with the exposition of Chemical industries. The American. Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will occupy the stage for most of the week, American Ceramic Society meets on Wednesday, the American Electrochemical Society on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry from Wednesday to Saturday. There will also be a symposium upon Safety in the Plant and Mine under the chairmanship of M. L. Leopold, Safety Engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and in the evening after this sleeting-which will occupy an entire afternoon-there will be shown a series of motion pictures of safety work in plant, field-and mine. The motion picture program will consist almost entirely of films now being made. Even in motion pictures, the Exposition is outstanding as the place of introduction to the public of the newest and most recent developments. Each improvement of the projectoscope in motion-picture projection has been reserved for first public demonstration at the Exposition. Mention cannot be made of the new exhibits that are engaged for the Exposition, other than to say that the electric furnace will be in operation. These will give, probably for the first time, men of science an opportunity to see and compare the various designs and judge them for the various work to which they are applicable.

The Bureau of Mines instrumented two similarly backfilled stopes--one filled in the normal manner and the other with the fill densified using vibratory compactors--to evaluate the effect of fill compaction on subsequent vein-wall closure proposed as a adjunct process for strengthening cemented fill. Hydraulic pressure cells to monitor pressures within the fill and mechanical closure devices to measure vein-wall movement and the procedure for their installation are described. The field compaction work was generally performed manually by utilizing small commercial concrete vibrators. A prototype immersible vibrator using slusher cables to propel the vibrator in the stope was used on several lifts of fill. Although compaction efforts were less effective than anticipated in increasing the final density of fill, analysis of the field data does indicate somewhat improved strain characteristics and an increased pressure buildup for the densified fill. The effects of a prolonged period of inactivity and of rock burst occurrences in the immediate area are also reflected in plots of strain and pressure within the two instrumented stopes.

"For many years, rejection of pyrrhotite at the milling stage has been a viable method for sulphur dioxide abatement. Pyrrhotite rejection options have included the use of selective pyrrhotite depressants in flotation; a depressant which has recently come into use is diethylenetriamine (DETA). This reagent has been the subject of recent research and development efforts in the processing of nickel-copper sulphide ores.In the present study, adsorption trends for DETA have been monitored under the dynamic conditions of flotation using a spectrophotometric method which has been adopted for this purpose at Falconbridge Limited. The results indicate that the adsorption of DETA is quite fast and in the majority of cases, accounts for the disappearance of 75-95 % of this reagent from pulp's liquid phase. The adsorption decreases linearly with an increase in the DET A dosage from 100 git to 600 git. The tailings produced in flotation tests were subjected to washing with deionized water at 60 °C to examine the desorption of DET A. These results indicate that the amount desorbed increases with increasing DETA dosage used during flotation but is less than 7 per cent of that adsorbed. It was found that adsorption of DETA alone, even at relatively high levels, does not always cause depression of pyrrhotite. A new combination of reagents identified in the metallurgical laboratories of Falconbridge Limited utilizes sulphur dioxide with DETA. These reagents together are capable of efficient depression of pyrrhotite on a consistent basis."

Reduction of oxygen-containing copper has always heretofore been brought about with wood poles. This paper reveals the first successful, economical, and Practical substitute for poles: a gaseous reductant, of which the production and plant use are detailed herein. THE art of fire refining of copper, consisting of melting, oxidation, slag removal, and finally reduction with wood poles, has been practiced for many centuries. An authentic record, discussed in detail in De Re Metallica,* mentions that as early as 1200 A.D. workers in this field of metallurgy were already acquainted with and practiced the basic principles of copper purification. Undoubtedly, the art was well developed marly centuries before the first written records began to appear. Notwithstanding the many advantages gained by application of mechanical con. trivances and by the tremendous increase in size of operations over the centuries, the reduction phase of the process has persisted essentially the same to the present time except for a very recent breakthrough. Numerous articles have been published and many patents have been issued on the subject of substitutes for wood poling in the past half century. They have dealt with a variety of gaseous, solid, and liquid reducing agents. But to the knowledge of the writer, no procedure has ever been prosecuted to a complete success on a large operating plant scale with the single exception of gaseous reduction of oxygen-containing copper revealed in detail herein. VARNES,* Steelton, Pa.:-We have a gas-cleaning plant consisting of a, centrifugal dry dust catcher, and two rain-type wet scrubbing towers, 25 by 60 ft. each, for rough cleaning of blast-furnace gas. This plant was put in early in 1910, with the intention of cleaning gas for use in hot blast stoves and under boilers, and was so used for several months. Soon after it went into service, the blast-furnace men complained that they could not get as high blast temperatures as they had obtained when using dirty gas. It was decided to run a series of careful tests to determine if this were true and to what degree the apparent results might be affected by other conditions. About 60 tests were run, covering a period of five months, and at the end we came to the conclusion that it did not pay us to scrub the gas for stoves and boilers. The tests were all run upon a single stove, no boiler tests being made, but the conclusions of the stove tests being applied to the boilers. "The detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of coal exploration and mining. Tests for weathering which are suitable for the exploration camp should be fast, simple, and require minimal equipment and operator expertise. In this study, two tests which fulfill these requirements were evaluated using samples of Western Canadian coals. These tests, one based on the pH of a coal slurry and the other on the flotation of coal in a water/diesel oil mixture, do not appear to give consistent results and are not recommended as ideal weathering parameters.IntroductionThe weathering of coal results in a deterioration of those properties which render it suitable for use in industrial processes. Consequently, the detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of exploration and mining. Frequently, decisions related to the depth of the weathered zone must be made at the exploration camp and, therefore, tests for weathering which are fast, and require relatively inexpensive and portable equipment and minimal operator experience, would be very useful. The aim of the study reported here was to evaluate two tests used by U. S. Steel Corp. to detect coal weathering and which satisfy the requirements for use in an exploration camp. The study is a continuation of a more extensive examination of the detection of coal weathering by various methods, reported elsewhere (Marchioni, in press)."

Marine scientists at the University of Georgia, have in the past few years, designed, developed and refined two geochemical survelliance systems for the exploration of hard mineral resources on the seafloor. The one first developed is an underwater sled which contains a nuclear radiation detector for measuring naturally occurring gamma radiation that is associated either with marine phosphorites containing uranium and its decay daughters or thorium decay products that are indicative of monzanite. The latter can, in most instances, be used as a pathfinder mineral for placer deposits that may contain other heavy minerals of interest such as rutile, ilmenite, chromite, gold, etc. This sled is operational in continental shelf depths. The second system is capable of more definitive measurements in the form of direct elemental analyses of the silt and clay fractions within the surficial sediments. It consists of a towed sled containing a submersible pump which, upon agitating the sediments, transfers the finer fraction up a hose to a shipboard centrifugal cone then to an automated sample processor. The resultant samples are rendered into sediment wafers, suitable for non-destructive XRF analysis. The system is capable of shipboard analysis for specific elements within minutes after sampling, allowing a cursory look upon which an exploration grid can be formulated while on site. A much wider spectrum of up to 40 elements can be evaluated when the wafers are returned to the land based laboratory.

The smelting plant and equipment at Mount Isa, as originally designed and built, was described by J. M. Callow (1) *.F. A. Forward (2) described alterations and additions to the plant and discussed the metallurgy of mixed carbonate-sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa, prior to 1933, in the Proceedings of this Institute.In 1933, A. F. McAskill (3) gave full mechanical details of the plant in a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers, Aust.FLOW SHEETSFig. No. 1 represents the present general flow sheet. Forward's (2) flow sheet is reproduced here as Fig. lA, and will serve for comparison in depicting subsequent deletions from, and alterations and additions to, the plant.Fig. No. 2 presents the daily tonnage flow sheet of 1939 practice.ALTERATIONS SINCE 1933General. Many changes in metallurgy and operation have taken place, particularly subsequent to March, 1935, when the treatment of a mixture of carbonate and sulphide ores was discontinued and the mill commenced operating on all-sulphide ore. This alteration brought about the elimination of gravity concentration-Jigs and Tables and resulted in the production of all-floatation concentrates of a very fine sizing. Refer Table No. 2, page?) "Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades, increased operating costs and increased construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a consequence, the 60 to 100 cubic foot flotation machine of the l950's and l960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines, with a resulting improvement in the flotation machine specific capacity (TPH processed per square foot floor space), specific power (HP per TPH processed) and process control simplicity. The recent development, and satisfactory plant evaluation, of the WEMCO 1000 cubic foot flotation machine provides the means by which further economic and operating advantages may be incorporated in high tonnage mill applications.The systematic development of the large 1000 cubic foot flotation machine, and its subsequent performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores (copper, zinc and iron) will be reviewed in this paper and recently completed plant results will also be provided."

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Only grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own.CONCLUSION• Overflow versus grate dischargeAn overflow mill has a “pool” of slurry around the toe of the ball charge, which creates a counter lever to the ball charge. This will reduce the absorbed power in the range of 10-15% (depending on the case) and will consequently result in a coarser grind. The tests found a 4% gain in grinding efficiency (Wio) with an overflow mill but this is probably not significant.This lower absorbed power and coarser grind can be counteracted by increasing the ball charge (if below maximum) and/or by increasing the mill volume when removing the grate discharge (a typical grate takes up about 300mm of the mill length).• Open versus closed circuit"

In common with general experience in the iron-making industry overseas, Australia has in recent years suffered a deterioration in the physical quality of her iron ores in their suitability as a direct blast furnace feed. The increasing amounts of fines and the more friable nature of lump ore, especially in the ore from the Cockatoo Island deposits in Yampi Sound, Western Australia, have focused attention on problems of ore preparation and agglomeration, particularly sintering.Although very small pilot scale Dwight-Lloyd type sinter machines were operated at the steel-making centres at Newcastle and Port Kembla during World War II, no sizeable capacity was installed, so that ore was charged to the blast furnaces almost entirely unscreened, and the resultant flue dust was stockpiled.Towards the close of the war, the pilot plant at Newcastle was replaced by a small machine, adjacent to the flue dust stockpile, with a rated capacity of some 20 tons per hour. After approximately five months of part-time operation, this plant was closed down in January, 1945. Production was not resumed until December, 1950, when, due to a temporary ore shortage, it was decided to supplement available ore with sinter produced from the large flue dust stocks of about 300,000 tons. In spite of mechanical and process difficulties, inherent to the design of the plant, operation was continued on a two-shift basis, with several shutdowns for extensive overhaul and plant alterations, until September, 1954, when production was put on a three-shift basis. Addition of Yampi ore fines to the sinter machine burden was not commenced...

Lime production is the largest single chemical use for limestone and dolomite. The term “lime” in this review refers to high-calcium and dolomitic quicklime, their hydroxide forms and dead-burned dolomite. This review is restricted to a discussion of the U.S. lime industry. Production and consumption In 2004, according to preliminary data, U.S. lime production was about 20.1 Mt (22.1 million st), an increase of 900 kt (990,000 st) compared with 2003. Production in2004 was valued at about $1.4 billion. Commercial sales of lime totaled 18.6 Mt (20.5 million st) and captive production was 1.5 Mt (1.65 million st). Total U.S. consumption was about 20.2 Mt (22.2 million st). The majority of U.S. lime trade was with Canada.

The uranium industry has made a dramatic turnaround in the past three years that even the most optimistic economist was not willing to predict during the uranium downswing of the 1990s. Uranium reached a 30-year low in February 2001 of $6.50/lb. By the end of February 2006 it had soared to $38.50/pound. This nearly 600% increase in the uranium spot price within 4 years dwarfed the increase in gold price that has barely mustered a 100% increase. The initial slow rise from $6.50 in February 2001 to $10.75 in April 2003 (fig. 1) was primarily driven by the decrease in the value of the dollar. Since then several factors have contributed to the soaring price: (1) The awakening of many to the simple fact that uranium supply has not met demand for several years and that the world’s stockpiles are being drawn down, (2) How sharply this fragile supply can be impacted by disasters at the world’s major uranium production facilities, such as a) the flooding of the McArthur River Mine in the spring of 2003, b) fires at Olympic Dam, c) the potential that Rossing, with an annual capacity of 4000 tonnes uranium might close by 2007, (3) the withdrawal of Tenex from the HEU (highly enriched uranium) feed agreement, and (4) the announcement by the Chinese of their intent to build 30 new nuclear reactors.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

BECAUSE of its high strength and stiffness coupled with low density, continuous boron filament is showing great promise as a potential reinforcement for both metals and nonmetals. Of primary consideration for structural applications is the fatigue behavior of boron fiber composites. Composite fatigue behavior is dependent upon three factors: 1) fiber fatigue behavior, 2) matrix fatigue behavior, and 3) the effect of the interface and fiber ends. The purpose of this note is to describe the behavior of boron filament in rotating beam fatigue. The filament, described by Talley' and Galasso, Salkind, Kuehl, and Patarini,' was made by the hydrogen reduction of boron trichloride on a hot tungsten filament. Testing was performed using a commercial rotating beam wire fatigue tester* described by Votta.~ One end of the test sample is held in a chuck in a synchronous motor. The sample is bent around in a "U" shape, and the other end inserted into a carbide bushing. The maximum strain occurs at the bottom of the "U" where the radius of curvature is a minimum. The strain is adjusted by adjusting the length of the specimen and the location of the bushing. Samples were rotated at 3600 rpm and an automatic shutoff device used to determine the number of cycles to failure. The measurements were accurate to the nearest 360 cycles. The fatigue behavior is summarized in Fig. 1 for fifty-one samples of 4.8 x 10"3 in. diam fibers and ten samples of 3.2 X 10"3 in. diam fiber. The two sample groups represent two different filament production runs and two different nominal size groups. Both groups exhibited nominal tensile strengths of 400,000 psi. No significant difference in the fatigue behavior of the two sample groups is apparent. The scatter in the data is not unexpected for a brittle filament which exhibits a tensile strength distribution with a standard deviation of 10 to 15 pct. Because the test procedure provides a known outer fiber strain in the sample, the maximum stress was calculated assuming a Young's modulus of 58 x 10' psi. This value was selected as being representative of several nominal fiber sizes.2 All of the samples which failed exhibited sudden, catastrophic fracture, and no permanent deformation. One sample was stopped after 1.66 x lo8 cycles at *200,000 psi. The fiber exhibited no apparent damage or deformation. It is apparent that the fatigue resistance of boron filament is quite good. It can therefore be speculated that the fatigue behavior of boron fiber composites would be controlled by the "weaker links", namely matrix fatigue resistance and interface behavior. In fact, preliminary investigations have revealed that this is true for boron-reinforced aluminum? It should be noted that the data presented herein may not necessarily reflect the tensile fatigue behavior of boron filament. It is well-known that boron filament has a radial residual stress pattern with the outer surface in ~om~ression.~ Because of this fact, tensile failure is normally nucleated in the interior of the filament.5 Since the data presented herein is for a rotating beam test in which only the outer surface of the fiber is stressed to the maximum value, it would be incorrect to assume that the failure mechanism and fatigue behavior would be the same if the fiber were tested in tensile fatigue. The fact that many of the data are well above the nominal 400,000 psi tensile strength would tend to support this argument. Bench-scale flotation tests were conducted on two western tactite ores to study the recovery of tungsten and zinc minerals. The investigation, which is part of the Bureau of Mines ongoing program to develop methods for beneficiating minerals and metals from domestic low-grade ores, demonstrated the feasibility of producing scheelite, sphalerite, and their bulk concentrates. Sphalerite concentrates containing 51 to 53 pet Zn and less than 0.11 pct W03 were selectively recovered prior to scheelite flotation. Zinc recovery ranged from 85 to 91 pct. Scheelite concentrates containing 17 to 25 pct W03 were then recovered from the ore; tungsten recoveries ranged from 88 to 94 pct. Bulk flotation concentrates containing 84 to 91 pct of the W03 and 87 to 95 pct of the zinc also were prepared. More than 98 pct of the W03 in a bulk concentrate containing 9 pct W03 was extracted by autoclave leaching with a soda solution. The zinc remained in the leached residue.

Magnesite has the unique combination of properties that make it useful in a wide variety of metallurgical applications. The use of refractory magnesite has been increasing throughout the world, but the source of the "ore" differs. The United States has increased production of synthetic magnesites while the rest of the world is exploiting its resources, using natural magnesites. The history and methods of manufacturing synthetic magnesite are discussed as well as the practices for beneficiating natural magnesite. The properties, costs, and uses of the two types of magnesite are discussed and compared.

[This Bureau of Mines study is intended to identify and evaluate potential effects of impending large-scale U. S. rail line closings (abandonment) on domestic nonfuel mineral industries. This is the first nationwide study of rail abandonment impacts focused on nonfuel minerals. The analyses presented is based principally on a survey of 200 rail freight records and on statistical tests that correlated 2,000 points in the Bureau&apos;s Mines Industry Location System (MILS) with 700 prospective abandonments throughout the United States. The conclusions derived from the analysis can be useful in evaluating proposed national rail abandonment policy rind legislation regarding nonfuel miner it shipping. Among these conclusions are the following: (1) Certain mineral materials (especially fertilizers) are likely to account for a large percentage of the rail traffic affected by abandonment in the next few years, but the total tonnage- involved will be small; (2) abandonment will adversely affect some mineral shippers, particularly local smart haulers; and (3 abandonment could significance reduce the opportunity to develop new resources or reopen defunct mining facilities. Despite these problems, however, the data examined in this study do not indicate that current abandonment trends will cause widespread disruption 01 domestic nonfuel mineral shipping.]
