Case histories are reported for several soft ground shafts ranging from 6' to 40' in diameter and 50' to 230' in overburden depth for which ground freezing was employed to provide temporary ground support and groundwater control during shaft sinking through the overburden. Cases reported emphasize dealing with difficult site and ground conditions such as working within existing buildings, through very soft, running and bouldery soils, in the presence of substantial lateral groundwater flows, and into salt dome deposits requiring special considerations. Construction procedures, schedule, and relative costs are discussed for each case.

Techniques for optimization of mineral processing flowsheets are reviewed. Though not yet widely used in the minerals industry, approaches for chemical process optimization based on successive quadratic programming (SQP) algorithms may be employed to determine optimum unit design and control settings for a mineral processing flowsheet. Moreover, in certain mineral processing flowsheet applications, specialized techniques can be applied because of the nature of the system relations. These techniques offer advanta es in efficiency. Moreover, their capability exceeds that o f the SQP approaches since simultaneous optimization of circuit configuration and unit controls can be addressed.

In designing structural members of steel and some other materials the design engineer has available recognized values of elastic modulus and safe working stress that may be substituted in well-known engineering formulas to give him desired cross-sectional areas and deflections for a particular part. Zinc, on the other hand, has no generally recognized modulus. It flows under continuously applied loads. Therefore, the designer of structural members must use a range of working stresses depending on the continuous load and the amount of permissible distortion. The only method of obtaining these values is by creep testing. Creep testing of zinc has been carried on for some 20 years by this laboratory, covering a wide range of zinc and zinc alloys. Types of test included tension, compression, and simple and cantilever beams at temperatures ranging from o to I50°C. Specimen conditions ranged from as-cast or as-rolled to accelerated aged in steam or dry air. Effects of plating were investigated also. It is not the intention of this paper to expound all these factors but rather to present the final data on well-known zinc die-casting alloys and to suggest means of applying these data to engineering design. Early Work In the early work on creep testing of zinc, the direct-loading tension method was used. However, direct loading of die castings was unsatisfactory because of the high loads required. For instance, a standard die-cast tension bar having a cross-sectional area of about 0.049 sq. in. would require a direct load of about 1000 lb. for a unit stress of 20,000 lb. per sq. in. Also, tests were made at nominal room temperature, but normal variations caused fluctuations greater than those due to experimental error or other causes, so that control of this variable within ±1/2°C. seemed essential. These two factors led to the development of an apparatus described by J. Ruzicka,' in which the specimens were loaded by means of a lever and were held at constant temperature by means of an oil bath. While Ruzicka's apparatus yielded excellent check results, it seemed desirable to have some setup by which literally hundreds of die-cast specimens could be tested at the same time. This would permit the conducting of a number of low-load tests designed to run 10 years or longer and still leave capacity for current high-load work. Beam testing in a constant-temperature room was the answer. Test Method Preliminary work indicated that die-cast beams of various lengths and cross scctions yielded the same result within reasonable limits regardless of whether they were tested as simple beams, uniformly loaded beams, or cantilevers. "The Brenda mine is located in south central British Columbia, 22 km north west of Peachland, in the heart of the Okanagan Valley. Situated at an elevation of 1500 metres, the mine area straddles the divide between the headwaters of Trepanier Creek and Peachland Creek. These flow into Okanagan Lake, the chief valley water resource located 1100 metres below. The creeks are of great significance to the water management of the area as they constitute the water supply for the Municipality of Peachland, a thriving retirement community with a population of 5000. A location map is shown in Figure 1.The history of the Brenda Mine operation has been well documented previously. After twenty years of operation, the open pit mine shut down in June 1990 due to the depletion of its ore reserves. During the course of its life, it produced 109 million tonnes of waste rock which is thought to contain approximately 0.10% copper as chalcopyrite and 0.015% molybdenum as molybdenite stored in four rock piles around the pit. Similarly, approximately 200 million tonnes of tailings were produced grading 0.015% copper and 0.005% molybdenum. During operation, tailings were hydrocycloned to produce a coarse sand for dam building with the fine slime stored behind the dam. It is estimated that 40% of the tailings were used for the dam construction. The layout of the mine site is shown in Figure 2.The mine was operated under a zero discharge permit. This was achieved by diverting practically all surface water flowing towards the mine area around the site. Water affected by mine operations, was discharged to the tailings impoundment, and recycled to the mill for reuse. The recycle rate was 90% and seepage from the tailings embankment and saddle dam was pumped back to the tailings pond. Because acid drainage was not a problem with the low grade Brenda rock, runoff from the rockpiles was initially released to the local environment. However, due to the alkaline nature of the waste rock, dissolution of low concentrations of molybdenum in the site runoff waters became evident by the late 1970's. The molybdenum content of Peachland Lake, the water reservoir for the municipality of Peachland, approached the Canadian Drinking Water Standard of 0.25 ppm. By 1979, a series of diversion and collection ditches was completed to direct all runoff water from the rockpiles to the tailings impoundment area. This had a significant detrimental effect on the site water balance causing it to go into a considerable surplus condition. During normal operation, this oversupply was contained by the rate of tailings dam building. An economic shutdown of the mine during 1984 forced a limited discharge from the site to protect the integrity of the tailings dam."

The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

This paper review s several new applications of solvent extraction developed in conjunction with a research project carried out under the AEC Raw Materials Division by the Dow Western Division laboratories during the last two years. A process for recovery of uranium from ores by contacting the solid directly with organic solvent without a prior aqueous leach and a process for uranium recovery by contacting thick, unfiltered leach slurry with the solvent were studied in an attempt to simplify ad reduce the cost of ore treatment procedures. Processes to produce pure UF4 products at the concentrate mills thus eliminating the production and subsequent dissolution of the concentrate were investigated. Since many of the leach liquors contained vanadium as well as uranium, solvent extraction processes for by-product vanadium were also studied.

Although confident of its ability to meet any demands that may be made, the petroleum-refining industry is not complacent about the situation and realizes that the quantities of petroleum products to be furnished are so enormous and so far beyond what was previously estimated that the full cooperative effort of the industry must be exerted. Establishment by the President in May of the Office of Petroleum Coordinator for Defense with Secretary of the Interior Ickes at its head, plus the formation of the Petroleum Industry Council for Defense, in November, provide the channels for united endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor in full harmony with the nation's needs. Great strides have been made and a rapid understanding of the situation and the magnitude of the task is being attained by all concerned. Refining, by constant study and development, by willingness to experiment and install new processes, and to replace older plants with more efficient equipment, had kept on a high plane of efficiency and progress. Working under the free competitive system, it built up its establishments until, as expressed in last year's report, it was easily able to supply any domestic demand that might be placed on it. Turning the United States into the arsenal not only of itself but of the united nations resisting aggression, however, in- creased the call for practically all petroleum products and in particular 100-octane aviation gasoline and high-viscosity aviation lubricating oils. Refining Capacity With over four million barrels a day of crude oil being charged to stills at the year's end, oil refining had broken all records and faced the necessity of further increasing its size to supply the ever-increasing demand for products, some of which, like 100-octane aviation gasoline, were research laboratory curiosities a few years ago. Although the refining capacity of the United States is listed at 4,860,000 bbl., about 800,000 bbl. of this is economically unavailable because of plant location or type. To meet the increasing needs, additional capacity of another half million barrels may have to be built in suitable locations and designed with an eye toward maximum production of aviation gasoline but with inherent flexibility to make it possible to vary and interchange with production of motor gasoline, furnace oils, and other products as necessity dictates. An interesting side light on this refining capacity question was an enquiry from official Washington for knowledge as to any idle refineries of something of the order of 10,000-bbl. daily crude capacity that might be purchased for bodily removal to Russia. 100-Octane Aviation Gasoline Largest of the tasks confronting refiners at the year's end was that of raising

A DISCUSSION of the probable future use of coal for power develop-ment involves the study of several basic factors, such as future demand for power, the quantity and availability of fuels in direct competition with coal, the price of coal, and a closely related factor-the efficiency and cost of fuel utilization. Predictions based on purely statistical analyses of past coal con-sumption have definite limitations. For example, statistics showing the relation between coal utilization and total energy consumption from all sources between the years 1890 to 1930 indicate that during that period, the energy consumption per person in the United States increased five times, while the coal consumption per person increased only twice1, and there has been an actual decrease in per capita coal consumption since 1920. Figures such as these, compiled by authentic agencies, emphasize the need for caution in attempting estimates as to the future use of coal, and, incidentally, would seem to offer little basis for optimism in the coal industry. They also suggest the value of analyzing broadly the part played in the past by the related factors of power consumption, competitive fuels, coal prices and the efficiency of utilization. Proper weight must also be given in such a study to the present status and limitations of power-plant developments, and to the question of what the coal industry itself can do to further its own interests and influence the consumption of its product.

The coal industry in Australia has been actively working in recent years towards the (re)integration of geostatistical techniques to the process of coal resource estimation. The benefits of using geostatistical techniques, over the current interpolation algorithms in use in coal modelling packages used to generate the grid estimates, need to be illustrated for the methodology to gain a broader acceptance in the coal industry. This paper focuses on the benefits gained at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi AllianceÆs Saraji mine for the estimation of the total product yield value at a 9.7 per cent product ash cut-off of a particular seam of the Saraji deposit. In order to perform this comparison, the results of the alternative estimation methodologies need to be benchmarked, which in most situations is achieved through the reconciliation of the estimates against production and/or process plant reconciliation data. Unfortunately, this benchmarking was not possible as no reconciliation data for the area of interest in the chosen seam was available, as it has not been mined at the time of the study. Where no reconciliation data is available, an alternative method is to use conditional simulations as the benchmark for comparison. The simulated values can be regarded as ærealityÆ, and the alternative estimation methodologies, based on a sampling of the underlying ærealityÆ, can then be compared using the simulated ærealityÆ as the benchmark for comparison.

To help meet the challenge of mine finding at the start of the 21st century, the exploration geophysicist will have at his command a powerful range of tools, some new, some improved, and some which already exist today but are as yet little used. Remote sensing, using satellite and aircraft-based multi-spectral scanners, will provide the means for routinely mapping the surface distribution of certain carbonate rocks, clay and ferrous alteration minerals, based on the analysis of solar reflectance spectra. Time and emission-spectral resolved laser-induced fluorescence will likewise map the distribution of certain ore and pathfinder minerals, as well as certain skarn zones, all potentially related to ore deposits. The GPS (Global Positioning System), based on 18 orbitting satellites, will provide a universal, three dimensional, all weather navigation system which will completely supplant all existing aerial navigation systems, and greatly facilitate aerial surveying and automated processing and presentation of the data. Aeromagnetic gradiometer measurements will provide higher geometric resolution which will yield better definition of individual geological units. Multi-method ground geophysical surveys will be greatly expedited through the use of portable microcomputer-based, multi-sensor instruments. These instruments will interface with other intelligent devices for automated processing, presentation and interpretation of the ground field data. Borehole geophysics will come into more general use, both for at-hole measurements, especially using active nuclear techniques for grade determination, and for remote detection using a variety of electrical, magnetic, seismic and other methods.

SCOTT COULTER: Thanks, Eric. Thank you all for coming. Our first speaker today is Claude Bazin. Claude received a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1980 from Laval University in Quebec. He worked for a short time in a mineral processing plant and then returned to Laval to complete graduate studies in the field of process modeling and control. He obtained his master's degree in 1983 and his Ph.D. in 1990. In 1987 he joined Brunswick Mining, New Brunswick, as research metallurgist and subsequently process control engineer. In 1990 he joined Helzfield Mines, New Brunswick, as senior metallurgist. In 1991 he accepted a position of professor at the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, a position he is still holding. He's a member of the CIM, TMS, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. Claude's topic today is "On-Line Material Balance for Flotation Plants." INTRODUCTION CLAUDE BAZIN: During the last two decades, the on-stream analyzer (OSA) has gained the stat& of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant (Leroux and Franklin 1994), and its application to oxide mineral flotation plants is increasing. The OSA assays are sent to the flotation operators via an operator console or to control loops of various degrees of complexity (McKee 1991) implemented in a distributed control system (DCS). Operators and/or controllers take control actions based on these assays to ensure an adequate operation of the plant. Although this application pays off very rapidly for the purchase of the OSA, one could ask, "Could we get more from the OSA?" Some plants reported the use of OSA measurements for process optimization (McKee 1991). The optimization strategy is based upon economic indices calculated from metal recovery using the 2-product formula (Wills 1992, p. 124). The 2-product formula is sensitive to measurement errors in the assays and can lead to considerable scatter in the calculated indices (Hodouin et al. 1993). Least squares algorithms provide a robust alternative to filter out measurement errors (Spring 1992). This paper presents some applications of a recursive least squares algorithm that provides real-time estimates of the mass flow rates within a flotation plant using OSA and mass flow rate measurements.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are manufactured barrier layers containing a high-quality sodium bentonite clay attached or adhered to geotextiles or a geomembrane. The GCL's low permeability and high strength make it an ideal replacement for low permeability soil or clay liners for mineral extraction and processing containment applications. This paper will discuss the advantages of utilizing a GCL versus compacted clay in containment applications. Some of the advantages include: the GCL's lower permeability (5 x 10-9 centimeters per second (cm/sec)) and corresponding better composite liner leakage protection, the GCL' s greater resistance to desiccation, differential subsidence and freeze­thaw, and lastly, the ease and speed of installing the GCL. This paper will also detail a number of important case studies related to the mineral extraction and processing industry. These case studies include using GCL in two large reclamation capping projects, as a secondary liner in two gold heap leach pads, as a composite liner in a dam for stormwater runoff control, and lastly, as a primary liner for a tailings runoff diversion channel.

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. In this way model parameters are obtained describing the behaviour of ball mills over a wide range of mill sizes and operating conditions. These parameters define the flow and breakage of each size fraction of ore in the mill. Flow of coarse particles through the mill is found to depend on the proportion of coarse particles present. The breakage rates of coarse particles are found to decrease markedly with mill diameter for mills over 3 m in diameter.Simulation of grinding circuit throughput at constant productsizing for different mill diameters shows that throughput is proportional to theoretical mill power consumption for mills up to about 3 m in diameter. Thereafter the throughput gradually falls below that indicated by power consumption, the decrease becoming quite significant for large diameter mills. Simple qualitative physical arguments are presented to explain this behaviour. The models developed have applications to ball mill scale up. Work on their further development is continuing.

"Projections of demand for Alberta coal indicate a quadrupling of current production rates to some 70 million tonnes/year by the end of the century. About half of this output-comprised of subbituminous coal-will be required within the province, primarily for generation of electric energy. The remainder-roughly 70 per cent high-volatile bituminous (hvb) steam coal and 30 per cent medium- or low-volatile bituminous (mvb/lvb) metallurgical coal-will be exported, principally to Pacific Rim and Western European countries. Direct employment in mining and coal processing is projected to increase from the present ca. 3000 to at least 12,000 persons.This paper presents separate forecasts for subbituminous, hvb and mvb/lvb coal production in the period 1982-2000; notes a number of possible developments that could substantially modify these forecasts; and briefly discusses attendant infrastructure requirements. Attention is drawn to potential shortages of qualified manpower and to threatening inadequacies of transportation facilities.IntroductionDespite the dislocations triggered by the 1973 'oil crisis', energy budgets of Western industrial countries are mostly still in the very early stages of the anticipated transition to greater reliance on coal. Shift s to coal are still more often only talked about than being implemented; and the public policies which are essential for timely development of facilities for producing, transporting and using coal are in many instances not yet even broadly formulated, let alone enunciated.In these circumstances, long-range projections of coal demand and supply-even if restricted to internal requirements- are subject to greater uncertainties than usually afflict such forecasts.On the demand side of the equation, these uncertainties arise ultimately from linkages between a need for coal and the availability and pricing of OPEC oil. The current surplus of oil on world markets, which has recently forced substantial reductions of posted prices, is undoubtedly a transient phenomenon that is unlikely to have any long-term impact."

The market for thermal coal has recently been growing rapidly and it is projected to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Both the national and international markets often demand high-Btu low-sulfur thermal coal in order to minimize the cost of utilization and meet the environmental restrictions. High quality thermal coal can be prepared to compete in the utility market by desulfurizing the high-Btu midwestern coal and blending it with low-sulfur western coal which is usually low in Btu content. The methods that can be used for optimizing the coal preparation plant operating parameters for physically desulfurizing coal are presented.
