In order to raise the utilization rate of phosphate resource of Al-Jalamid Mine in Saudi Arabia, a flotation experiment for its phosphate rock was carried out by using WF-01collector that have been produced by Wengfu Phosphate Mine. The results showed that WF-01 collector had extensive adaptability for Al-Jalamid phosphate rock, and the grade of phosphate concentrate could be up to 33% P2O5 mixing the upper, middle and lower beds rock as well as its 80% more recovery.

The Geotechnical Engineering research group at James Cook University has been working closely with all the leading mines in Australia in the area of minefills. They have carried out substantial research and consulting work on the drainage and stress developments within hydraulic fills. The objective of this paper is to summarize their work during the past five years on hydraulic fills. The paper will serve as a one-stop reference, pointing to relevant literature including the authors? own publications, on various issues covering drainage and stress developments within hydraulic fills. More than 15 different hydraulic fills, representing five major mines in Australia, were studied. Their grain size distributions and placement characteristics including permeability, porosity and dry density were studied and comparisons were made with the limited in situ data available in the literature. Stress development within hydraulic fills has been studied to minimize the risk associated with barricades failure. FLAC and FLAC3D were used to model stress developments within the hydraulic fills and were compared against the approximate closed form solutions available in the literature. A laboratory model was developed to study arching effects within the hydraulic fills.

"This study interprets vibrations produced by single underground shots, recorded on surface by 135 digital seismographs laid out in four linear arrays. Several vibration anomalies were observed and are investigated. A novel method of displaying the blast-induced vibration iso-contour data relative to the three-dimensional representations of the geological rock units and structures leads to the following interpretations:• The identified faults commonly dampen or amplify vibrations, on the evidence of the peak particle velocity,• Strong anisotropy of geologic formations produces different vibration attenuation in the various directions of interest,• Low-vibration “depressions” can be related to the presence of faults, and• Higher vibration levels than expected based on ‘scaled-distance’ principles are observed close to intersecting faults.The interpretations from this study document a better understanding of the geotechnical influences on blast induced stress wave propagation in a geologically complex area. The practical benefit of this understanding is better control of surface vibrations, experienced from underground mining activities."

Construction contracts in the USA contain the clause "Value Engineering" ? an interesting and curious clause allowing contractor initiated design changes. Misleading is the interpretation of value engineering implying cost saving and sharing with the owner, and curious is the timing, just before beginning of actual construction. It is not surprising that such a clause would simply be ignored, because it involves change, often major design changes in very short time; and change is feared, moreover, it is vehemently resisted by all parties, owner, designer, contractor. The problem in the USA may lie in the divergence and separation of the two entities: Designer/Engineer and Builder/Contractor, assigned to the "one" engineering project. The priorities and incentives of these two groups are very different. The Engineer spends years, even decades, in design and prepares contract drawings often without a deep understanding of construction methods. Worse, with all the time available to him and in our era of tremendous advances in computational methods and speed, the designer turns in plans that are inexcusably exaggerated code-based design with excessive safety factors. As to the Contractor, he builds, often without appreciation of design principles or regard for design engineers. Redesign to apply a new technology or optimization of an inferior design just before construction becomes unthinkable. It is not surprising that adverse and hostile relationship between the designer and the contractor is a norm with extended disputes and claims, not to mention the cost these entail. Surprisingly, "Value Engineering" was successfully implemented in record speed on several very large projects in the metropolitan New York area. The process of change was unconventional, painful, and even comical. Four case studies are presented: two Design/Build: the 1.2 billion dollars Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System in New Jersey and the 90 million dollars MTA Bus Depot in Manhattan, and two Conventional Design/Bid/Build: the 90 million dollars Queens Boulevard Bridge and the 150 million dollars Long Island Expressway.

When the first rush of miners took place on the Molyneux River, in the Dunstan Gorge, the gold was won by means of cradling the gravel, which was shovelled from the various beaches and crevices in the rock-bound sides of the river.The above method of winning the gold was only practicable when the beaches were not covered with water, hence the work was usually carried on during the winter months, the ordinary level of the river during spring and summer months being some ten or twelve feet above winter level. The melting of the spow in the Lakes water-shed being responsible for the high summer level of the river.As the available beaches were worked out, other methods of winning the gold were proposed and worked with more or less successful results the first advance being to work the bed of the river by means of a spoon dredge. The spoon was made with a round lip or ring of iron, having a steel cutting edge on one half of the circumference, at the opposite side a socket being forged to take a long spar or boom, which was securely fitted thereto. At intervals round the hoop, half-inch holes were bored to enable. a bullock-hide bag to be laced on to same. The spoon was worked from a pontoon which carried a crab winch, tackles and the necessary washing appliances to treat the washdirt lifted. In starting to dredge, a tackle was attached to near the upper end of the boom, and a line or chain was carried over a cat head from the crab winch...

Experimental study on the strength and deformation characteristics of coal under cyclic loading provides guidance for designing coal pillar which is subjected to repeated mining influence during mining. This paper studies the strength, deformation and fatigue process of No.3 coal from Xinhe Colliery under cyclic loading by the MTS815.03 servo-controlled rock mechanics test system. The results indicate that coal is more susceptible to fatigue damage than other hard rocks. Under uniaxial cyclic loading, the fatigue failure ?threshold value? of coal is smaller than 78% of its uniaxial strength, and there is also some fatigue damage when cyclic loading and unloading experiment is carried out below the fatigue failure ?threshold value?. Axial deformation can be divided into three stages: Initial deformation, steady-state deformation and accelerating deformation. Transverse deformation can be divided into two stages: Stable deformation and accelerating deformation. When the transverse deformation begins to increase rapidly and the deformation recovers only slightly upon unloading, it?s a precursor to failure of coal. Under cyclic loading, fatigue failure develops through a process of compaction, strain hardening, and strain softening.

This study examines the possible relationships between compositional variability in non-hydrothermal manganese nodules and large-scale environmental parameters. In the central SW Pacific (145-180° W and 20-O° S) the level of primary productivity, the rates and proportions of carbonate, silica and organic matter supply to the sediments, and the position of the seafloor relative to the Calcium Carbonate Compensation Depth (CCD) appear to directly influence nodule composition. Four zones of nodule composition are apparent. These zones correlate fairly well with the level of primary productivity in surface waters, as estimated by satellite-based measurement of chlorophyll content. The observed correlations between surface productivity and nodule composition are consistent with the contention that the dominant source of several transition metals in these deposits (i.e , Mn, Ni, Cu. and Zn) is provided by removal of fine-grained particulate matter from the water column by biological means. Subsequent decay of organic matter in sediments augments the content of these metals in the nodules through oxic and sub-oxic diagenesis. The opposite behavior of Fe and Co content may in part result from mineralogical and dilution effects.

"UHE Peixe Angical is a 452 MW hydroelectric power plant located on the Tocantins River in Tocantins, Brazil. In 1999, geologists began feasibility studies to estimate the river’s hydroelectric potential, and the decision was made to proceed with the construction of a power plant. In 2002, after extensive investigation, the studies indicated geological homogeneity at the site for the dam, except for an anomaly detected on the left margin, and construction began on the $1.2 billion project.As the work began, the complex ground conditions presented several serious difficulties. The solution was unlike any undertaken before in Brazil— a 100-m-long secant cutoff wall, with 76 1.8-m-diameter piles of up to 78 m deep. All were placed in a six-month period.In the preparation for the detailed construction plans, further studies in the area of the anomaly better defined the geology so that a treatment program could be developed. The feasibility study had detected silicified rock with high permeability in one area, and an injection curtain was designed with five injection lines. In the other area with an anomaly, further investigation revealed a permeable marble formation that was 50 m thick. Here, a specific injection program with three injection lines was developed.The injections started in February 2005 in the marble formation area. By July of that year, only the primary and secondary holes were drilled from the three lines, resulting in a space between injections of 1.50 m. By the end of July, the drilling was halted. The contractor had identified a thick area of heterogeneous material below the transition zone that was characterized by a mixture of soil, fractured rock and hard fractured rock. The anomalies were detected while drilling, and both the general contractor and the designer concluded that the phenomenon of “piping” was taking place.Constructing a positive cutoff wall became a priority."

The Reserve Mining Co., in the processing of taconite iron ore quarried from the Peter Mitchell Pit, deposited the finely crushed waste rock into Lake Superior near Silver Bay Minnesota. In the early 1970s The U.S. Environmental Protection agency filed a lawsuit against Reserve Mining Co., asking the court to force the company to stop dumping into the lake. On April 20, 1974, after a lengthy court battle, the U.S. District Court concluded that the Reserve Mining discharge into Lake Superior violated federal and state pollution laws and thus ordered Reserve Mining Co., to halt the lake disposal of taconite tailings. At the time many feared that some of the mineral particles contained in the tailings (alleged to be asbestos or asbestos-like) would cause human health problems. This Conference was thus convened to readdress the problem of the mineral content of the Biwabik Iron Formation and to whether any minerals contained in the ore could cause human disease. The four papers given in this session address the nature of the mineral particles in the taconite rock, the definition of the term ??asbestos?? and the history of the legal controversy over the possible health effects of certain mineral particles contained in the Biwabik iron range ores. Morey The Biwabik Iron Formation was a principal source of ore for the American steel industry during the 20th Century. INTRODUCTION This paper is intended to fulfill three major purposes. The first of these purposes is to narrate the improvements to the ventilation of Northeast Churchrock Mine and the subsequent reduction of the radiation levels. The second major objective is to pass on to persons unfamiliar with the ventilation of radon and radon daughter producing mines some of the most important characteristics of airborne radiation and the control thereof. The third objective is to describe the use of a computerized digital mine ventilation simulation. This description is not only of the usage, but also some of the important methods and techniques involved in the usage. This paper is not intended for the persons with extensive experience in these areas. However, to those persons who are just becoming involved with either ventilation of mines with airborne radiation problems or persons interested in computer simulation, this paper should be of some interest. It is the author's experience that most of the information on either computer simulation or airborne radiation control either assumes an extensive knowledge on the part of the reader, or does not address the direct application of the information contained in these articles. It is for that reason that this paper intends to concentrate on the actual application of the topics covered. INITIAL STATUS In the first quarter of 1980, the author and others became involved with the ventilation effort of the Northeast Churchrock Mine. At this time, this team began an investigation of the mine ventilation with the intent of reperforming a mine pressure survey. During the course of this investigation, it was determined that the ventilation system was inadequate. During this first quarter, the responsibility for ventilation of the mine was transferred to the author and his team. It was determined that the system that was in use was that of the single entry or haulage return type. In this type of system, there is very little direct control of the airflow, and it is not an effective type of ventilation for mines that experience problems due to airborne radiation. In a single entry, or haulage return, system there is no separate return system provided. In the system, as we found it, the only source of intake air to the ore level working areas was from the track level. This intake air was forced into the ore level, or stope level, via bulkhead fans installed on raises from the track. This air, after being used in the working areas, was then allowed to find its own way back to the exhausting vent holes. There was essentially no control of this air from the bulkhead fan discharge to the vent hole. The only control used was by the sizing of the fans on the raises. The main portion of this air used the haulage and access drifting for return. Due to the large horsepower used in these bulkhead fans and the large resistance both between the areas to the vent holes and inadequate intake ducting, the stope level pressure was higher than the track level. This pressure differential caused a severe recirculation between the stope level to the track level. This recirculation also caused a severe pre-contamination problem to the supposedly fresh intake air, making his air nearly unusable for working area ventilation. [ ] It was found at the time our ventilation effort began, that the radiation levels were high enough to make compliance with the four working-level month per year standard impossible. For this reason, we had to spend several months driving costly development drifts to implement a completely different type of ventilation system. Before describing the system that was implemented to solve the problems that were discovered during our initial investigation, some discussion of the characteristics of airborne radiation due to radon and radon daughters is needed. RADON CHARACTERISTICS AND RELATED TECHNIQUES One of the most notable characteristics of radiation contamination caused by radon and radon daughter decay is that once the contamination has entered the airstream, the radiation levels as measured in working levels will continue to rise without any further contamination. In order to analyze and quantify distinct environmental properties in the vicinity of sites, the Site-Specific Natural Resources Information System (SARIS) has been developed based on a Geographic Information System (GIS). SARIS is one of the fundamental databases of a collaborative research program aiming at the resource orientated analysis of metallic raw material flows with aluminum and copper serving as exemplary case studies. The spatial database incorporates all present production sites of ore extraction, refining and smelting. Environmental data for each location were derived from global digital survey data covering land cover, soils, morphology, climate, topography and population density. The main application of this database is the characterization of environmental safeguard objects, which may be affected by the activity of concern. This site-specific environmental impact assessment is used to determine the relevance of environmental issues based on the distribution pattern of sites in a global framework. The derived results are used to suggest a tailored indicator approach to measure progress and performance of industrial developments relative to the predetermined site-specific conditions.

The Farlin Creek study area encompasses 610 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Beaverhead County, Montana. A mineral survey was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey in 1984. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed literature and county mining records, and examined prospects or mineralized areas to determine its mineral potential. Geological Survey personnel evaluated the area by geochemical sampling and geophysical surveys. The study area is included in the Mount Baldy mining district. Nearby mineralized Quartz veins or tactite bodies apparently do not extend into or exist within the study area. No significant gold or economic detrital minerals were found in samples from streams draining the area. All of the study area is leased for oil and gas.

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson, County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut, coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 316-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an. extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.

The possibility that formation of voids under creep-rupture conditions may take place by the condensation of vacancies has been investigated theoretically. It has been concluded that nucleation of voids under creep-rupture conditions by vacancy condensation is highly improbable. However, growth of pre-existant voids by vacancy condensation is probable. A number of predictions made in this theory have been verified by the data. It has been predicted and checked that the product of rupture life and steady-state creep rate for preannealed metals and single phase alloys is an approximately invariant quantity, independent of stress, temperature, and atomic number for a given type structure. The direction of the effect of cold work on this product has been predicted and found in agreement with experiment. A number of experiments to evaluate the vacancy condensation mechanism further are described. SEVERAL papers have appeared recently which speculate on the origin of voids formed at grain boundaries under stress.' ' The object of this paper is to examine quantitatively the proposition that the voids produced in a creep test are a result of vacancy condensation. A result of this paper is a theory of creep-rupture. Void Nucleation Application of standard nucleation theory" to the problem of void nucleation leads to the following conclusions: 1—Homogeneous nucleation of voids requires a supersaturation ratio (concentration of vacancies in supersaturated to that in saturated solution) of 400 for a reasonable surface energy of 1000 erg per cm-and 1.4 for the improbably low surface energy of 10 erg per cm. 2—Heterogeneous nucleation of voids at plane interfaces between two phases requires a supersaturation ratio of 2.5 for a typical contact angle of 145 3-—Void nucleation about a solid particle may be accomplished at a supersaturation ratio of 1.17 for a typical value of work of adhesion? of 60 erg per The work of adhesion is the surface work 10 replace two solid-vauor surfaces by a solid-solid interface. enr ' between an oxide and a metal in the presence of a surface active element such as sulphur. That is, nucleation of voids probably does not occur. Rather, existing submicroscopic voids grow out to visible size. Already existing voids might be produced during solidification or working. Supercritical sized parlicles which contain cracks may act as heterogeneous void nuclei. Gas pockets may act as void nuclei. Experiments are desired to determine the nature of the heterogeneous void nuclei which grow out to voids in both diffusion and creep experiments. Void Growth Void growth might occur in at least two possible ways, depending upon whether the already existing void nuclei are at grain boundaries or within the grains. In the case of a spherical void far from a crystal boundary, vacancies are generated during creep as a consequence of the migration of suitable dislocation jogs' and are also annihilated at sinks. Under these conditions, a steady-state concentration of vacancies is built up in the crystal, defined by the condition that for any differential volume the rate of generation of vacancies in that volume equals the rate of annihilation of those vacancies." This equality would lead to the development of a gradient of vacancy concentration radially outward from the void surface up to a radius where the vacancy lifetime becomes equal for all directions of vacancy migration. The distance over which this vacancy concentration gradient extends equals about 2vD,T* where D, is the vacancy diffusivity and T:' the vacancy lifetime in a crystal outside the gradient in a zone of constant vacancy concentration. The vacancies generated in the region over which the gradient exists will annihilate more often at the void than elsewhere. Approximately a little over one-half the vacancies generated in the gradient zone will annihilate at the void. A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

To date Iron Monarch is the most important Australian source of iron ore and since HH5 has produced about 84 million tons of direct shipping ore containing 62 per cent iron and 3 per cent manganese.Previous geological work, mainly by Rudd, Edwards and Miles is reviewed and the results of later exploration by quarrying and drilling are discussed and modified interpretations of both stratigraphy and structure are advanced. Renewed study of the mineralogy of the iron ores is advocated.The Iron Monarch orebody lies on the up-thrown side of a major transcurrent fault that truncates it on its northern boundary. The nearby Iron Knob orebody is believed to occupy a horizon that is some thousand feet stratigraphically above Iron Monarch.The origin of the ore cannot be explained by any simple theory; development probably took place over a long period of time from Lower Palaeozoic to Tertiary.INTRODUCTIONIron Monarch orebody has supplied the Australian iron and steel industry with the greater part of its ironstone requirements since the establishment of the Newcastle steelworks in 1915. Annual production of direct-shipping ore has exceeded three million tons but declined slightly after 1956 when Iron Prince was brought into production. Total production of ore from Iron Monarch to the end of 1962 is about 84,000,000 long tons containing some 55,000,000 tons of metal.The deposit (Lat. 32°44'30"S : Long. 137°08'30"E) is 34 miles north-west of Whyalla, on the western shore of Spencer Gulf. A 42 in. gauge railway connects Iron Monarch and its associated small town of Iron Knob with Whyalla (Fig. 1).For the purpose of this paper Iron Monarch includes Iron Knob and the intervening jaspilite hill known as Substation Ridge, and the description of the general geology necessarily 'Assistant Chief Geologist, The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. INTRODUCTION Economists have long expressed suspicion of the economic theory of natural resource exhaustion, even in writing articles which have contributed to it (1). Indeed, the gap which separates the pure theory from practical management seems unusually wide. It is doubtful whether a mine manager could possibly know enough about the relevant parameters of his mine to steer it along the optimal paths described by the theorists (2). Nevertheless, enough faith in the theory remains that mine managers are suspected of being a separate breed whose behavior must be studied in special courses using specialized text-books, collections of readings, and journals (3). The implied hypothesis, that mines and natural resource firms are managed differently than other firms, is the subject of this paper. In the next section the theory is developed and analyzed. In section III, I discuss the implications of the statistical results that have been obtained. Finally, conclusions are reserved for section IV. THE MODEL A key difference between the traditional theory of natural resource production and that of other forms lies in the set of variables which ire assumed to jointly determine the quantity of output the firm will produce. Major Ore Treatment Methods: 1915-1925 Flotation concentration exclusively 1926-1930 Flotation concentration and ferric sulphate leaching 1931-1955 Ferric sulphate leaching (the so-called "Dual Process" was used for eleven months in 1937 when demand for copper was phenomenal; and the "leach-float" process was used for 24 months in 1942-44 as an expedient to help meet war demands for copper). 1956 on "Dual Process" combining a sulphuric acid leach followed by fine grinding and flotation of the residue from the leaching vats.

Introduction The fields of an infinite line source in the presence of a conducting half-space have been examined by Wait and Spies (1971). In any real communication link using a current-carrying cable for the transmitting antenna, the cable is of finite length. Here we examine the fields of a finite length cable carrying a constant current in the presence of a homogeneous conducting half-space. The constant current assumption is valid at sufficiently low frequencies when an insulated cable is grounded at the end points (Wait, 1952; Sunde, 1968). Here we examine both surface and buried cables since both downlink and uplink communication links are of interest. Also, we examine both frequency and time solutions since either CW or pulsed communications may be used. Finally, it is necessary to include both magnetic and electric field solutions since reception could be with either loops or dipoles. Since the finite cable solution is more complicated than both the infinite line source and the short dipole solutions, we explore under what conditions a cable appears to be either infinitely long or very short. Some special cases, such as- the low frequency limit, permit analytical solutions which exhibit the dependence on various parameters, such as cable length, quite clearly.
