The role of hardenability in the development of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels is discussed. The applicability of the superhardenability treatment. a steel making technique for increased hardenability, to HSLA steels is indicated, and the literature on this treatment is reviewed. Several low-carbon superhardenability HSLA steels were designed by use of published superhardenability multiplying factors. It was found that the hardenability of these low-carbon steels can be increased to the same extent as that of medium-carbon steels. The mechanical properties as determined in normalized bars indicate that the superhardenability treatment can be used successfully in the production of low-carbon hot-rolled HSLA steels.

Occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of powered hand tools can result in reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. In fact, even acute exposures to vibration cause shifts in vibrotactile thresholds in exposed fingers (2,4,5). Although reductions in tactile sensitivity after acute vibration exposures are transient, cellular changes associated with this shift in sensitivity could lead to the more permanent reductions in tactile sensitivity that are a common symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Methods Animals. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks of age) were used for all experiments. Animals were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guideline for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in a Broome-style restrainer, and securing their tails to the vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control animals were treated in an identical manner except that the tail platform was set on isolation blocks instead of a shaker. Tail temperature and current perception thresholds (CPTs). Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration (125 Hz, 49 m/s2), or restraint. Tail temperature was collected prior to and immediately following the exposure using an infra-red camera. Sensory neuron function was assessed by measuring CPTs with a Neurometer (Neurotron, Baltimore, MD). Transcutaneous nerve stimulation was applied to the C10 region of the tail. Three frequencies were used to test specific fiber types (5 Hz – C, 250 Hz - Ad, and 2000 Hz – Aß). The intensity of the stimulus was automatically increased in small increments until the rat flicked its tail. Tests at each frequency were repeated until the animals displayed 2 responses that were within 2 CPT (or 0.02 mA) of each other (2-4 tests/animal). CPT tests were performed prior to the exposure, immediately following the exposure, and 24 h after the exposure. Data Analyses. Temperatures were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with animal as a random variable. ANCOVAS were used to analyze the CPTs at each frequency. Temperature at the time of the CPT test was used as a covariate, and animal was used as a random variable Results Tail temperatures declined between pre and post exposure (F(1,25) = 62.85, p < 0.001; mean ± sem pre 25.96°C ± 0.42, post 20.71°C ± 0.77), but were back to baseline levels by 24 h after the exposure in both groups of rats. The ANCOVAs demonstrated that exposure to a single bout of vibration did not alter sensitivity of C (5Hz) or Ad (250 Hz) fibers to stimulation.

This paper examines the longer-term predictive capacity of the GAMSPATH computer program (developed by the Alberta Research Council) for a waste rock (sample MS) obtained from the Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) mine, Kalimantan that contained significant framboidal pyrite. The model was refined by comparison with the net acid generation (NAG) and column leach tests to provide a basis for calibration of the model for both short term and longer-term reaction trends. The oxidation of pyrite during the kinetic NAG test using H2O2 provides oxygen directly at the mineral surface, generating a measured oxidation rate for pyrite of 1.16 + 10-6 mol m-2 s-1, whereas the oxygen diffusion limited rate in the leach column air equilibrated reaction was of the order 10-8 mol m-2 s-1 as calculated from the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database. Results indicated that the oxygen derived from hydrogen peroxide had to be included as a reactant (eg a reacting mineral) in the simulation to account for the direct availability of oxygen at the sulfide mineral surfaces. Optical investigations identified the proportion, particle size, and surface area, of framboidal and euhedral pyrite in sample MS. The reactive surface areas of the two morphologies were very different (eg ratio: 5:1). To manage these two different pyrite morphologies the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database was updated to include framboidal pyrite, with similar thermodynamic properties and oxidation rate to euhedral pyrite but with a particle size based on the size of the individual internal framboid microcrysts. This modification, with framboidal pyrite reaction based on the size of its microcrysts produced results that correlated well with the kinetic NAG and column leach test results when the measured (kinetic NAG test rate) and calculated (column test rate) pyrite oxidation rates were employed. This provided some confidence that the model could be extrapolated to indicate longer-term geochemical reaction trends.

In response to the FY2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 2764; Public Law 110?161), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued the final Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Rule (MRR). The rule, signed by the USEPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, on September 22, 2009, requires reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from large sources and suppliers in the United States, and is intended to collect accurate and timely emissions data to inform future policy decisions. The MRR will go into effect on January 1, 2010, and a report of the total emissions for calendar year 2010 will be due to the USEPA by March 31, 2011. Under the final MRR, suppliers of fossil fuels or industrial greenhouse gases, manufacturers of vehicles and engines, and certain facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons or more per year of GHG emissions are required to submit annual reports to the USEPA. The gases covered by the rule are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and other fluorinated gases as outlined in Table A-1 of Subpart A of the MRR, which is also provided in Appendix A of this report.

THERE have been a variety of theories proposed to explain the influence of dispersed second-phase particles on the yield strength and flow stress of metals, and these have been reviewed recently by Kelly and icholson.&apos; However, only several attempts2"4 have been made to develop mechanistic treatments which characterize the creep behavior of dispersion-strengthened metals, and to date these have not been fully evaluated experimentally. weertman2 and Ansell and weertman3 proposed a quantitative creep theory for coarse-grairzed dispersion-strengthened metals, based on the concept that the rate-controlling process for steady-state creep was the climb of dislocations over second-phase particles, as suggested by choeck. The theory predicted that the steady-state creep rate, <,, was proportional to the applied stress, a, for low stresses and that is a4 o for high stresses. The activation energy for creep, Q,, was equivalent to that for self-diffusion, Qs.d., in the matrix. Some limited experimental evidence in support of this theory was obtained on a recrystallized Al-Alz03 S.A.P.-type alloy by Ansell and Lenel.6 Ansell and weertman3 also developed a semiquanti-tative theory for high-temperature creep of lineg-rained dispersion-strengthened metals in order to explain their results on an extruded S:A.P.-type alloy, which had a fine-grained fibrous structure. They suggested that the rate of dislocation generation from grain boundaries was the rate-controlling process, and fitted their results to the equation: where Q, was found to be 150 kcal per mole, i.e., QC- 4Q,.d. in aluminum. Similar high activation energies for creep7-&apos;&apos; and tensile deformation" of dispersion-strengthened alloys have been observed by other investigators for S.A.P.,&apos;" indium-glass bead omosites, and Ni + A1203 alls.&apos; There is no general agreement regarding the mechanisms involved in the creep of dispersion-strengthened metals, and this is due in part to the lack of detailed studies relating the structures of crept specimens to the mechanical behavior. The present investigation on thoriated nickel was undertaken with the aim of studying the structural changes which occur during creep of a dispersion-strengthened alloy and rationalizing the observed mechanical behavior in terms of the creep structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam TD Nickel bar, which contained 2.3 vol pct Tho,. Obtained from E. I. duPont de Nemours & Co., Inc. The final fabrication treatment by DuPont consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fine-grained fibered structure with an average transverse grain size of -1 p and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 p. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (OOl), in agreement with the results of Inman eta1." All creep specimens were vacuum-annealed at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to testing. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the only structural change due to annealing was a slight decrease in dislocation density, confirming the reported high degree of structural stability.13 Furthermore, recrys-tallization or grain growth during creep was never observed. The structure typical of uncrept material (after the 1300 C, 3-hr anneal) is shown in Fig. 1. The grain boundaries are predominantly high angle and. although some areas show a tangled cell structure, the grain interiors are relatively dislocation-free. Individual dislocations are strongly pinned by the Tho2 particles; i.e., very rarely did dislocations move within a thin foil. The grey "halos" around some of the larger particles which protrude out of the foil surface arise from contamination in the electron microscoge. The Tho, particle size ranged from -100 to IOOOA, and the distribution is shown in Fig. 2. The technique used to obtain the data in Fig. 2 consisted of dissolving the nickel matrix in acid, collecting the Tho2 particles on cellulose acetate, and measuring about 1000 particle diameters in the electron microscope. Similar results were obtained by measuring about 600 particles in thin foils, an; the average particle size was found to be 2r, = 370A. "The basic problem of arsenic contamination from mine water is discussed. Effective methods of removal involving chemical precipitation, activated carbon adsorption, ion exchange and reverse osmosis are discussed. As well as an economic analysis, detail is also paid to other ions in solution which are removed simultaneously.INTRODUCTIONThe object of this paper is to review arsenic and its removal from gold extraction plant effluents. The first method considered is chemical precipitation. A second method is sorption processes, such as ion exchange resins and activated carbon adsorption. A third method is the possible application of reverse osmosis for the treatment of mine waste waters containing arsenic.Arsenic pollution in the gold mining communities of Canada and Ghana have been extensively studies (l, 2). Lynch(3) Shabunin, Gutman and Kogan( 4), Hollo, Troth, Vennes and Illinigi (5) and Hau(6) have reported their removal methods of arsenic by chemical precipitation, ion exchange and biological methods. Their conclusions were that the precipitation with Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions was most effective.Scope of the ProblemInitial aspects of this research program involved a detailed analysis of the operation of a gold extraction plant located in Canada. The name and location of the mine is proprietary information. Figure 1 gives a basic process schematic with the main tailing streams identified.Table 1 gives information as to the various mine streams and their physical and chemical composition. In this study, primary attention is paid to the removal of dissolved arsenic from waste waters. Solids from this type of operation can always be back-filled. As could be anticipated, the dissolved As content of the primary flotation tailing stream is very low. The dissolved As level in the secondary processing stream and the roasting quench water is quite high. The reason being that at this stage of the process, the arsenic has been freed from the arsenopyrite forms."

Within ten months of the first significant intersection on the Vera deposit, approval was given to proceed with a $28.3 M underground development of the Vera-Nancy gold mine. Contrary to what the timeframe suggests, the development of the underground mine was planned in a logical and methodical manner which enabled confirmation of the resource, evaluation of the orebody for mining and sufficient production to recommence milling operations at the Pajingo treatment plant. This paper describes the underlying factors on which the project was planned and developed. The approach has successfully enabled the mine to be in production 18 months after discovery without compromising any future production or potential expansion

The object of this paper as to show that the structural composition of an alloy may be found by the planimetric measurement of the total area occupied by each of the constituents on a few representative photomicrographs of this alloy. When the area is determined the volume and the proportional weight of the constituent may be calculated. This method has been used for the determination of the structural composition of binary eutectics and other binary alloys with known constituents; also the composition of unknown constituents in binary alloys. The accuracy of the method is. high enough to justify its application to metallographic problems instead of the chemical analysis. THIS work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that &apos;the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility, of determining the amount of the constituents with-out separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. This paper gives the derivation of a practical formula for the calculation of slopes in seismic reflection prospecting. The derived formula is an approximation and can be used where the slope of the reflecting horizon is less than 250 ft. per 1000 and the depth to the reflecting horizon is greater than 2500 ft. The slope of sediments in oil regions is generally considerably less than 250 ft. per 1000. This is particularly true of the Gulf Coast, with the exception of the salt domes, which usually have the sediments at a greater slope than 260 ft. per 1000. Processing kaolin clays from the sedimentary deposits of Georgia and South Carolina is described in this article. While the major processing steps are touched on briefly, emphasis is given to the dewater-ing of the clay-water slurries (slips) formed in the processing of kaolin clays. The dewatering steps discussed include gravity settling, centrifugal dewatering, vacuum filtration and thermal drying. Particular attention is given to vacuum filtration and the variables affecting filtration of these kaolin clays. Kaolin consists essentially of the mineral kaolinite, which is a hydrated aluminum silicate (Al2O3 . 2SiO,). Commercial deposits of kaolin occur in several areas of the U. S., but approximately 90% of the kaolin produced in this country comes from Georgia and South Carolina. These deposits are of sedimentary nature and occur in a geological fall line in the Tuscaloosa formation at elevations between 300 and 450 ft above sea level. Over two million tons of kaolin clays are used by industry in the U. S. each year. A big percentage of this tonnage is used in the paper industry for coatings in making glossy and high quality grades of printing papers. In addition, large tonnages are used as pigments; as fillers for rubber, plastic and fertilizers; and in ceramics. Properties of kaolin that make it widely used in the above applications are its particle size fineness, natural whiteness, chemical stability and non-abrasiveness. In addition to these desirable properties, it is relatively inexpensive. The finer coating grades of clays range in price from $15 to $28 per ton while the coarser filler grades sell within a range of $7 to $13.50 per ton. Pure kaolin particles are small hexagonal flat platelets. Above the 2-p size, the particles usually consist of stacks of plates, while below the 2-p particle size they occur as individual flat, hexagonal plates. Since these individual platelet particles provide the most desirable coating and flow characteristics, major importance is given to particle size fractions of 2 p and smaller. Generally, coating grade clays are those with all particles smaller than 15 p and at least 70% of the particles less than 2p. These coating grades also have 50% or more of the particles smaller than 1 µ in size. The extremely fine grades of coating clay currently being produced approach the range of 100% smaller than 2p. The filler grades of kaolin have 100% of the particles passing 325 mesh but have less than 70% of their particles below the 2-p range. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of the major processing steps involved in preparing kaolin clays for marketing. MINING All kaolin mining is open pit. The ratio of overburden to clay will average 3:1, but this ratio can, of course, be much higher depending upon the grade of the clay and the size of the deposit. Most of the commercially mineable deposits occur from 20 to 120 ft below the ground surface. Both draglines and pans are used in removing the overburden and mining the clay deposit itself. Despite the current economic downturn that is now decimating iron ore production, Minnesota?s mining operators remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the industry. Reflecting this optimism, the development of several new mining projects continues in the state. The future of mining in Minnesota was the featured topic at the combined 82nd Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 70th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium. More than 500 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and equipment suppliers from the around the world, attended the meeting, which was held April 14 and 15, 2009, in Duluth, MN. The combined meeting featured a keynote session with three distinguished speakers plus a panel discussion by representatives from several of Minnesota?s taconite producers. The keynote speakers were Curtis Clark, president and chief operating officer, Behr Dolbear, who gave a presentation on the ?State of the Mining Industry.? Phil Newman, chief operating officer, CRU Strategies, spoke about challenges facing the mining industry and James A. Skurla, acting director, Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, discussed the importance of mining to northeastern Minnesota?s economy. The taconite producers panel discussion included Jonathan Holmes, vice president and operations manager, ArcelorMittal; Ed Latendresse, vice president and general manger, Hibbing Taconite; John Tuomi, vice president operations services, United Taconite and Mike Mliner, vice president and general manager, Northshore Mining. The mangers provided updates on their respective operation The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions on mining, processing, environmental and nonferrous mining. The sessions included technical papers that provided information on the status of a number of new mining projects in the state. The conference also offered a SME short course titled ?The basics of iron mining.? A tradeshow that featured about 100 companies and organizations offering products and services to Minnesota?s mining industry ran in conjunction to the conference. It was estimated that more than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, attended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years. The Minnesota Section of SME also held its annual business meeting during the conference.

Pressure leach liquors from the pressure oxidation of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore were treated to remove iron, either by pressure oxidation (the Hematite process) or with particles of magnetite (the Magnetite process), followed by cementation of various metals with zinc dust to obtain a purified solution from which zinc was electrowon. Satisfactory iron removal was achieved by both processes after neutralisation to pH 4.5 or 5.5. Pressure oxidation of the liquor at 200¦C and 690 kPa oxygen overpressure, conditions similar to those of the Hematite process used in the zinc industry, resulted in the precipitation of the iron as hematite. With the Magnetite process, an iron hydroxide was precipitated onto magnetite at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature and removed by a magnetic separation step. The performances of both these processes for the removal of iron are compared. It is concluded that the Magnetite process offers considerable cost savings. Other impurities, in particular arsenic, were also removed with the iron in both processes. Cementation at pH 5.2 and 85-90 ¦C with 3.5 g/L zinc dust reduced the levels of copper, cadmium, and nickel to a satisfactory level and subsequent electrolysis in a laboratory cell gave an acceptable deposit of zinc.

Water is a necessary part of our environment. It is a biological necessity, but more than that, it is a necessary part of our life style. Those of us who live in the north woods expect water to be part of the scene. There are few natives of this region who would be content to eliminate the streams, the lakes, the marshes, or our forests. Throughout the world, water has been so much a part of man&apos;s environment and man&apos;s adaptation to life has been so closely tied to water that our way of life and ways of accomplishing our work include water as an essential tool. The production of taconite is an example of our dependence on water. Other methods could have been developed to process taconite ore but the process methods chosen utilize water. Water is used for grinding and separation and for trans- porting the ore from one part of the process to another and for dust control. A typical large plant producing 10 million tons of taconite pellets per year will have on the order of 130,000 gallons per minute (8.202 m 3/51 of water in circulation in the plant. About 120,000 gal. per min. (7.571 m 31s) will pass to tailing thickeners where 110,000 gal. per min. (6.940 m 31s) is separated from tailing and returned to the process. About 15,000 gal. per min. (.9464 m 31s) goes with thickened tailing to tailing basin. My point is that there are great volumes of water in motion in a taconite plant,

Pictured on these pages are the six RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1988-89 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Durango, Colorado to receive recognition at the Welcome Session Monday, June 26, 1989. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Keith McGinnis, each winner receives $500.00 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $500.00 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and have been recommended by their university. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state involved. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in the engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Blizzard Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado A high school graduate of Longmont, Colorado, Johnny carries a 3.968/4.000 at Mines, majoring in Mining Engineering with a minor in Metallurgy. His name has appeared on the Academic Dean&apos;s list for the past two years. He received the Robert M. & George R. Harris Scholarship during this past year. He is a student member of SME-AIMMP and an executive council member of CSM&apos;s chapter of AIME. Summertimes, Johnny works as a miner for Edger Mine in Idaho Springs, CO on an experimental project for USBM.

Several problems exist with the present design of coveralls used by miners in low coal (seam height 48 inches or less). The back portion of the coveralls often tears when roof bolts or rough areas in the roof are hit. Movement in the shoulder area is restricted. Female low coal miners find it difficult to purchase coveralls that fit properly, and must remove both their hard hat and safety belt in order to urinate and defecate. The objective of this research was to design coveralls which would alleviate these problems. The following features were incorporated into the coveralls; padding in the upper back area to avoid tearing, an action pleat in the shoulders to increase mobility, an inseam zipper to more easily allow miners to perform their bodily functions, and reflective tape to increase visibi¬lity of the miner. A heavyweight denim fabric was used to increase warmth and durability of the coveralls. The coveralls were assessed K long four parameters (comfort, safety, worker productivity, and fabric suitability) using both an in-field assessment by low coal miners and simulation studies. The experimental coveralls proved superior to conventional coveralls along all four parameters. Work clothing sizes for female miners were developed.

Rock burst is one of the most serious mining hazards, adversely affecting the safety, economy and productivity of mines. It is a sudden manifestation of the release of strain energy stored in the rock mass. At present, there is no universally accepted method for predicting the timing of the rock burst. However, if the seismically hazardous regions in mines can be identified before they are exposed to mining then precautionary measures can be planned before the work begins. A study was conducted in Sudbury Nickel Belt and an approach has been proposed to identify rock burst prone workings on the basis of (a) Rock properties and bursting indices (b) In-situ approaches (c) Geological features (d) Mining conditions (e) Observations during mining operations (f) Comparison and analogy with previous case histories of bursting. This approach will facilitate the judicious application of the burst control techniques to seismically hazardous areas.

In 1980, some US cars were designed and built to metric dimensions; wine and gas were sold by the liter; and the March of Dimes Walkathon was measured in kilometers. Although the US Congress has taken a &apos;&apos;soft" approach to metrication, and public resistance to the idea remains strong, the use of metric units is becoming more and more widespread. As the minerals industry becomes more international in scope, US mining companies are converting to the metric system-particularly those companies with business interests overseas.
