The Rhodax inertial cone grinder, designed by France?s FCB Group Fives, is the result of three years, theoretical and mechanical research in the field of compression grinding by the research staff of FCB?s CRM minerals research centre. A number of potential uses have been assessed and will be discussed in the paper. The crusher is an inertial grinder that works on the pressurized bed fragmentation principle. The fragmentation force is caused by the rotation of unbalanced masses rather than by an eccentric mass, as is the case in a conventional crusher. This makes it possible to achieve very high reduction ratios. By controlling the speed of rotation of the unbalanced masses, the grinding force can be modified, thus changing the product size distribution. The paper describes the machine layout, operating principles, control parameters and will briefly describe the results obtained on reef, waste and ROM reject pebbles. Some comparisons are made with conventional crushing.

In mid-1991, the design/build contractor set to work on the Pergau HEP in a remote corner of Malaysia, armed with only a slim volume of conceptual drawings. The next five years saw roads, power lines, buildings, dams, and over 30 kilometers of tunnel constructed, followed by two years of E&M installation and commissioning. Along the way, the project overcame geothermal groundwater, faults, land disputes, monsoon rains, marauding tigers, and those most fearsome of foes, politicians and the press. This paper is a testament to the ingenuity, commitment, and persistence of the construction industry professionals who brought this massive project to fruition.

This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

The application of hydraulic concentration to large scale operations has been effectively accomplished by the use of the SiphonSizer. Operation has been simple, automatic and essentially trouble free. The use of the primary desliming SiphonSizer on magnetic taconites has shown an improvement in grade of concentrate and an increase in recovery over conventional hydroseparators. Magnetic concentrates have been further deslimed and upgraded in SiphonSizers by floating a coarse middling product away from the heavier concentrate. The application of the Siphon-sizer to closed circuit grinding has met with only partial success to date. Hydraulic concentration of minerals has been practiced for a good many years. Until recently, however, the practice has been limited to equipment using a multiplicity of small pockets and relatively low tonnages and flows. The adaptation of the SiphonSizer to the concentration and classification of magnetite has changed this concept. Some fifty commercial units varying in size from a 16-ft diam circular unit to a 25x100-ft rectangular unit are currently in operation on magnetic taconites. Additional units up to 38 ft diam are under construction. Depending upon the application in the flowsheet, upgrading varies from 0.75% to 14% Fe in a single stage. To those not familiar with taconite processing, the importance of the struggle to remove economically as much silica as possible may not be fully appreciated. Perhaps some figures pertaining to transportation costs will underscore this important process. If the silica content of the concentrate from a 10,000,000 ton per year plant could be reduced by I%, a savings in boat freight, at $2.00 per ton, would amount to $200,000 annually! THE SlPHONSlZER The SiphonSizer, as illustrated in Figs. lA, 1B and 2, is a hydraulic classifier in which the hydraulic water is distributed uniformly across the bottom of the vessel by means of a system of headers (1 and 2), jet pipes (3), and nozzles (4). The depth of the teeter bed is automatically maintained by the siphon-float assembly. The feed is introduced through a feed well (5) and separated into two fractions by the effects of rising water and the density of the teetered bed. The magnetite fraction is discharged by the siphon (12) while the fine slime and light middling overflow a peripheral weir (9) to the overflow launder (6). The bed depth is controlled automatically by float valves (7), which are responsive to changes in the height of clear water supported in the superelevation tubes (8) by the density of the teetered bed. In the Piedmont, heavily loaded structures are generally supported by either drilled piers or one of several pile types. The choice of drilled piers or piles is typically one of comparative costs. The cost of a drilled pier foundation is usually the more difficult to predict because of the greater impact that variable conditions and construction monitoring have on cost. Poor specifications, related to the drilling equipment, procedures and bearing level, can also result in large cost extras. In the southern Piedmont, straight shafts are typically extended down to hard rock to achieve primary support in end-bearing: when bells are required, they are often constructed manually. In some eastern and northern Piedmont locations the thickness of the decompossed rock zone is significant and considerable skin friction can be mobilized. Typically piers are constructed in holes temporarily cased with steel liners. The bottom is cleaned of loose material and water, and then evaluated by a geotechnical engineer to confirm the design bearing pressure (and friction, where appropriate) or recommend alternative construction measures.

In response to the appearance of excessive convergence of bolted gateroads in the front abutment zone of retreating coal faces at Phalen Colliery, staff from the CANMET Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory in Sydney, N.S. initiated a programme of roof profile measurements in the front abutment zone of longwall headgates. The results of these measurements allowed a characteristic deformation curve to be determined for each headgate, and the early identification of areas showing an unstable deformation trend. These areas were then reinforced with supplementary support. The monitoring programme was adopted and enlarged by the rock mechanics staff of the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and has been continuing for a period of approximately two years. A sufficient quantity of data now exists to be able to make an assessment of the effects of a number of mining parameters on the performance of the gateroad in the front abutment zone. The following paper describes the method of measurement, illustrated by typical results, and goes on to relate variations in rate and patterns of movement to geology, interaction, method of support and pre-mining stresses.

Researchers at the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, developed and tested equipment to measure corrosion rates on a commercial-scale mill. Bench-scale experiments were also designed for duplicating ore grinding conditions closely enough that realistic rate determinations can be made in laboratory tests. Rates measured in a laboratory system compared favorably with those measured in the field. Cast steel was found to have corrosion rates in a copper mill and laboratory test cell of 22 and 21 mpy, respectively. Corrosion was found to account for less than 5 pct of the total grinding media wear in the operations studied.

After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key aspect of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization, and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. Cyanide-free technology of complex copper-lead ores flotation may be improved through enlarged range of pH values, enhanced copper recovery into copper concentrates due to additional recovery of secondary copper sulfides, as well as through enhanced efficiency of lead sulfides depression in process of new flotation modifiers-based selective separation. Study of the effects of flotation modifier (of metal nature) on minerals surface conditions proved that the xanthate is practically not adsorbed on the galenite surfaces due to minerals hydrophilization. Joint effects of sodium sulfite and modifier enhance process conditions for intensive galenite depression and at the same time for effective chalcopyrite and chalcosine flotation within a large pH values range (from pH=8 to pH=10). Identified mechanisms carry inference that proposed chemical reagent treating method is very promising for selective copper-lead concentrates separation. Potential use of carbon-containing materials as zinc flotation modifier to enhancing zinc recovery in processes of lead-zinc ores treatment has been studied. In our flotation tests we used Shalkiya (South Kazakhstan) lead-zinc ores containing such impurities as carbon shales, which presence impedes the process of saleable concentrates production and gives rise to excessive consumption of flotation agents due to the xanthate adsorption on the carbon. Lead and zinc concentrates were produced by process stages as follows: ores milled to 95% Cl. -0.074 +0; lead and zinc roughing flotation and further recleaner and testing operations. Test flotation in open process cycle resulted in enhancing zinc recovery into zinc concentrates by 21.1% and increasing zinc content in zinc concentrates by 3.96% that evidences promising potentialities for use of carbon-containing products as additional zinc flotation modifier. The productive potential of the Nation's principal active and inactive silver mining districts has been evaluated, using 1964 economic conditions and assumed silver prices ranging up to $3 per ounce. On this basis, the United States has an estimated 5 billion ounces of unmined silver, excluding minor byproduct silver in gold deposits. Approximately 3.5 billion ounces are contained in deposits requiring higher silver prices to be economically minable, and about 1.3 billion ounces are in currently operating mines. An analysis of silver consumption trends since 1954 indicates that the free world industrial market will climb to nearly 800 million ounces annually by 1985. U.S. industrial silver consumption has been projected to increase at an annual rate of 4 percent from 1965 to 1985. Average annual increase for the remainder of the free world has been 8.1 percent since 1953; this is expected to level off with an estimated average increase of 5 percent to 1975 and 4 percent from 1976 to 1985. Foreign silver production has, in the past, exceeded consumption, but in 1960 the supply deficit was over 100 million ounces. U.S. production, also traditionally exceeding demand, was suddenly overtaken at the start of World War II. By 1964 the annual deficit, excluding coinage, was over 84 million ounces. World coinage requirements of silver are fast declining and expected to total only 25 million ounces annually by 1985. In fact, coins are already becoming major short-term source of silver to fill the large deficit between industrial demand and current production. The larger, long-term deficit (to 1985, the limit of this study) must be balanced by silver from the hoards and new production from silver deposits. Eventually all of the deficit must be met by new production or silver prices will rise until consumption is greatly curtailed. To balance free world supply and demand, it is estimated that the free world must produce an additional 85 million ounces by 1975 and 375 million ounces by 1985. The estimated proportion expected from U.S. deposits is 17 million ounces by 1975 and 74 million ounces by 1985.

The “Eggequerung” is an important part of the German Railway’s (Deutsche BahnAG) modernized Dortmund—Kassel line. The heart of this 13-km-long (8 miles)construction lot is the double-track Egge Tunnel with a total length of 2,880 m(9,450 ft.). The tunnel was driven using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).The construction contract also called for a reinforced concrete secondary lining, guaranteed for a full water pressure of 30 m (100 ft.) water column. Preliminary geological study already showed that very problematic geological-hydrological conditions would have to be expected. This talk describes the chosen NATM driving concept that was adapted to the prevailing geological and hydrological conditions, the special driving method applied in geologically difficult zones as well as the water control concept used during driving. The flexibility and the limits of the NATM under exceptional hydrological conditions are illustrated. Also described are reinforced concrete lining works for the watertight secondary vault (reinforced concrete secondary lining without water-proofing membrane).

What happens when the skull and crossbones goes on a product? In the case of cancer warnings, the consequences can be severe. If the label contains the term "lung carcinogen", you might expect to compensate a lot of smokers, meet a lot of expensive lawyers, be counseled by equally expensive consultants and pay sharply elevated insurance premiums, if you are able to obtain coverage at all. At the extreme, you may face plant shutdowns, job losses or even Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Regardless of how you fare, you are likely to learn some very disconcerting things about the risk evaluation and regulatory system which required you to label in the first place. If a particular material or product does pose a health risk, you are obliged both legally and morally to warn those potentially exposed. Once that warning appears on the label, however, the consequences are often beyond your control. You and your embattled product become part of a legal/regulatory system which has a life of its own. Therefore, the issue of health labeling is not so much whether one warns but rather whether the warning itself is justified and the reasonableness of what happens afterwards. It is this matter of justification and reasonableness, particularly of cancer warnings, which this paper addresses. Until, as they say, your ox has been gored, we tend to believe that risk is determined by the best available technology and expertise We expect that risk evaluators appreciate the ramifications of their work and place things in proper perspective; that risk has been appropriately demonstrated before it is publicized and regulated; that the time-honored concept of prudence, to err on the side of safety, has not been excessively stretched. Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving (boiling in NaOH) biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium. For Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by using batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed, effect of temperature and contact time on biosorption efficiency were studied. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacity and adsorption yield of one metal ion were reduced by the presence of the other metal ion. In the experiments the optimum pH value was found out 6.0. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Frundlich adsorption models. The highest metals uptake was calculated for Zn (II) and Pb (II) were 57 and 87 respectively. desorption of heavy metal ions was performed by 50 mM HNO3 solution. The results indicated that the biomass of p.chrysosporium is a suitable biosorbent for removing heavy metals ion from aqueous solution.

"The town of Ajo is built in the desert and consisted of but a few houses when the New Cornelia Copper Co. started operations. Since there were no stores at Ajo or vicinity the New Cornelia Cooperative Mercantile Co. was established to serve the needs of the employees of the New Cornelia and allied companies.The New Cornelia Copper Co. advanced the money to erect the store building and to buy the stock, and assumes all risks. In all, $85,000 has been advanced, representing the capital stock of the enterprise.The store is run by a store manager appointed by the Copper Company and who reports only to the general superintendent. A committee of seven workmen, representing the various depart¬ments, meet with the store manager monthly and make suggestions for the betterment of the service and, present complaints which have been brought to their attention.The store is well managed, carries a large and well assorted stock and is modern in every respect. Prices are at the same level as in the other Southwestern mining camps. The Copper Company does not particpate in the profits of the store but does receive six per cent interest on the capital advanced. At the end of the year, after making proper deductions for interest on capital account, depreciation of store equipment and fixtures, and, for a proper sum to the surplus account, the rest of the profits is distributed among the employees of the company in proportion to the amount of their purchases."

ALL electrical geophysical methods depend for their operation upon the effects produced by the flow of an electric current. By studying these effects it is possible to predict the general axis of current flow. The greater flow of current is in the path of greatest, effective conductivity; and since the effective conductivity of a mineralized zone is different from that of its surrounding envelope (usually much greater), it is possible to locate such a mineralized zone by the distribution of current. Due consideration must be given, of course, to geological structure, to type of mineralization, and to other factors. A number of methods are used to cause this flow of current, and various methods are available for detecting the presence of such current flow and for studying its effects. In a rather detailed way, this paper will discuss the theoretical and practical phases of the inductive methods of geophysical prospecting. ELECTROMAGNETIC GENERATION OF AN ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE The inductive method is so named because the current flowing in the conductor is obtained by electromagnetic induction, instead of by the use of ground electrodes through which a current is passed as in the applied potential systems, or by direct contact with the orebody. An alternating current flowing in a coil will create an electromagnetic field around the coil. This field will have the same frequency as the current and will radiate or travel outward from the coil in closed magnetic or flux circuits: These flux circuits (in air or a homogeneous medium) will be perpendicular to the plane of the coil and will extend or travel outward with uniform velocity in every direction. Maximum field exists in the plane of the coil. Such a coil used for transmitting or as the "energizer" will exhibit similar figure-eight characteristics to those exhibited by the direction-finding coil which will be described in detail later.

The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The requirement of mineral resources is increasing as the economy is continually increasing in China. The mining practices of various complex sulphide deposits and precious metal deposits, and the treatment of mine tailings and other industrial solid wastes, have greatly improved fill quality in the metal mines. From early-1980s, high density slurry fill, paste fill of total tailings, low density slurry fill with addition of silicate gelling agent, etc has been studied and applied, and some progress has been achieved. Today, mine tailings, slag and power plant ash are widely used as fill materials in mining. A number of cemented fill mines equipped with large capacity trackless mining machines are in production. Recently, The 3rd Chinese National Symposium on Mining with Backfill, 1995 has been held, the progress of fill technology in mines has been exchanged and summarised. In the paper, some aspects of fill technology used in the metal mines of China are briefly introduced and some applications of fill research work are presented.
