"A complete list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1947, was published as Information Circular 7432. 3/The present list is a supplement thereto that includes all of the equipment approved during the calendar year 1947.The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7432 showed six air compressors on the active list; two additional compressors, Nos. 7 and 8 in this category, were approved during 1947.Items 2 and 7, unmounted loader and power unit, respectively, under Loading and Conveying Equipment, item 2, rubber-mounted mining machine and item 8, distribution box, appear in Information Circular 7432. They are repeated to show that approvals of these four equipments were extended to cover an additional voltage rating which requires material change in design.Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper, with Information Circular 7432, gives the complete list of permissible mine equipment that is available under the various classifications."

THE requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet process and the dry.

The Closure Risk model was developed as a new tool to aid decision makers in the complex area of mine closure. It uses a simple analytical technique that allows the decision maker to simplify what is often a complex mine closure process into more easily managed sub components. This systematic approach ensures that critical factors in the closure process are not overlooked. It also allows the most important issues to be highlighted. The model can also be used to produce quantitative estimates of risk by weighting and prioritising the issues to produce the Closure Risk Factor (CRF). Field trials at several mine sites in the Northern Territory of Australia in 2001 tested the model. The trials confirmed that the model has significant potential as a tool for decision-makers to assess in a structured, systematic manner, the major closure risks at individual mine sites. The risks include not only environmental impacts but safety and health, community, legal, financial, technical and other issues. The trials confirmed the value of a team-based approach and the inputs of key staff including environmental, production, mine planning, and community liaison personnel as well as mine management. Although the usefulness of the qualitative component of the model was established, it was found that, due to the influence of subjectivity, the utility of the prototype model to determine quantitative risk was of limited value. Using a continuous improvement approach, improvements to the model were sought. A refined model, incorporating the Australian Standard 4360 definition of risk and facilitated in-house risk assessment sessions was developed and tested against the data obtained in the field trial. This model, while maintaining the qualitative strengths of the original, allows more accurate absolute and relative quantitative scores to be calculated. This in turn facilitates comparisons between the issues at a single site as well as between different mines.

INTRODUCTION As the world's population expands and nations struggle to better their relative position and standard of living, increased emphasis is being directed to the exploration and production of mineral resources, to the mitigation of natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and to geotechnical engineering projects such as high-level nuclear waste disposal, underground military facilities, and transportation tunnels. Several topics are common to all of these endeavors. One is the characterization of the rock mass in situ, including the definition of the initial environment (e.g., temperature, stress, etc.). A second is, depending upon the use of the underground or the desired result, the manner in which the boundary conditions or the environment are to be changed by man. Next, the physicochemical behavior of the rock mass must be measured, or inferred with uncertainty limits placed on this behavior, over the appropriate range of environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, chemistry, etc.) for the application proposed. And last, an appropriate, validated predictive model must be applied to estimate the rock mass response to the perturbation. In the period preceding about 1955, only relatively simple testing of soils and rocks was commonplace, partly because the environment (depth) to which these data were applied was not so extreme as it is at present and partly because less precise predictions of material response were acceptable. Only limited and relatively simple test data seemed to be needed to guide the engineering. At the present time and certainly in the future, as we extend our interaction with the earth's crust to greater depths and impose more extreme perturbations on it, we need a larger body of data, deter- mined under much more complex conditions, in order to make the required predictions. Measurements have been made of the standard free enevgies of formation of the sulfates of cobalt, Cupric copper, nickel, and ferric iron in the temperature range of 750° to 950°C. Dynamic gas-solid techniques have been employed in which oxide-sulfate and basic sulfate mixtures were placed in a stream of gas of controlled SO3 potentials. Thermal analysis and thermogvavimetry were used as detection methods, and it was found THE formation of sulfates during the roasting of sulfide ores is now considered to arise in many cases from the interaction of sulfur trioxide in the gas and the metal oxide which is formed on the sulfide as a first step.' As a preliminary to the investigation of the kinetics of sulfate formation during roasting, measurements have been made of equilibria from which the free energies of formation of cobalt, copper, nickel, and iron sulfates can be that the range of temperatures which could be investigated and the choice of method was largely controlled by the kinetics of these gas-solid reactions. The results are compared with previous results obtained from static measurements with which they agree quite well, and calculations have been made employing themal data to interrelate the present results with those for other sulfates. calculated. The method used has been to expose the solid sulfate (or basic sulfate) to a controlled flowing gas mixture of SO,, 02, and SOs and to observe the temperature of decomposition. The onset of decomposition was detected by thermal analysis or thermogravimetry. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The thermal-analysis method was similar to that employed by Dewing and Richardson.' The sulfate was dehydrated at 250°C in air, and placed in a small alumina crucible which was held by a quartz ring in the hot zone of a horizontal furnace. The microseismic method of detecting instability and high-stress zones in underground mines was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the early 1940's.l,2 For about 25 years this method has been used throughout the world by mining and construction companies in assessing the stability of underground and surface excavations. Rock noises are the release of small amounts of stored strain energy propagating outward from their source as a seismic wave that can be detected with special geophysical equipment. This release of strain energy is caused by a rock mass undergoing load changes resulting in small-scale displacement adjustments such as microcracking, shearing, sliding, and crushing of crystal grains, some even as small as the elastic displacements themselves. No detailed field studies of any of these mechanisms have been made, and knowledge about the origin of rock noises is relatively incomplete. Laboratory tests have shown that when rocks are stressed in a testing machine, the rock noise rate-the number of rock noises generated per unit of time increases with increasing applied stress.3 This increase is most pronounced as the ultimate strength of the rock is approached. The standard field procedure has been to monitor a rock structure at intervals and plot rock noise rates vs. time, thus gaining a semiquantitative estimate of the behavior and stability of the structure. The success of such monitoring, however, has depended almost entirely on the experience and knowledge of the operator, his interpretation of the data, and his equipment. Very little study has been devoted to the basic properties of the vibration record of a rock noise. USBM decided that the microseismic method was being used sufficiently by various mining and construction companies

In making the original estimates for a report recommending the cyanidation of Ymir stamp-mill tailings, the writer was unable to find in any of the standard works on cyanide-practice certain data applicable to the local conditions; nor has he as yet seen quite the same practice recorded in the rapidly growing literature of cyanidation. To present these figures, together with a few novel features of local practice, the present paper is offered. The ore treated is obtained from a fissure-vein of steep dip, occurring in a slate country. The ore-body is lenticular in plan, swelling from 4 ft. in width at one end to a maximum of 42 ft., and tapering irregularly to less than 18 in., where payvalues cease. In the wider portions of the fissure the ore is mixed with more or less horse-matter from the walls. The clean ore is white, massive quartz, with from 8 to 12 per cent of sulphurets; the latter being pyrite, sphalerite and galena, the predominance being in the order given. The precious metal tenor is variable, the gold more closely following the pyrite, the silver the galena. The present mill-supply is practically all from below the oxidized zone. The unavoidable admixture of horse-matter and stope-filling with the ore as mined, affects more or less the character of the mill-feed, which sometimes contains from 10 to 25 per cent of slate. During the last three months of 1902, the mill-feed carried 0.3977 oz. gold and 1.903 oz. silver per ton of 2,000 lb., 2.65 per cent lead and 2.92 per cent zinc. Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." Nowhere in the world has cone classification in closed-circuit grinding with tube mills reached as high a state of development as on the Wit-watersrand. In the development of the Far East section the necessity of fine grinding to obtain satisfactory residues gave rise to a situation with which the cone could cope only at a great sacrifice in efficiency of tube-mill grinding. H. A. White1 recognized the limitation of the cone in his study of the theory of tube milling as early as 1915, but it was not until Ewing, Davis and Willey2 carried out their tests at Springs Mines during 1920 that the advantages of mechanical classifiers were demonstrated. During the fall of 1924 the writer supervised a series of tests with Dorr classifiers undertaken by Mr. White, Consulting Metallurgist, at the mill of the Geduld Proprietary Mines, Ltd., Dersley, Transvaal (Far East Rand). The importance of classification to obtain efficient tube-mill grinding was thoroughly demonstrated. The installation of classifiers of the above type that followed the test confirmed the results of the experimental work. Tests with Cones, Straight Type and Bowl Classifiers The test at the Geduld mill was made to determine the relative grinding efficiency of a tube mill when grinding in closed circuit with cones, straight type Dorr classifier and Dorr bowl classifier. The efficiency of a tube mill, as expressed in this article, is based on the tons of minus 200-mesh material produced by the mill. The efficiency is also expressed in terms of tons of minus 90-mesh material produced by the mills to correspond to the standard practice on the Witwatersrand. THE third year of Government exploration for potash by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the authorization of the act approved June 25, 1926 (Public 424-69th Cong.) is drawing to a close. The results thus far obtained are thought to be sufficiently interesting and satisfactory to justify the presentation of a brief pre¬liminary account of the work. REVIEW OF EARLIER EXPLORATION The general geologic similarity of the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico to the potash field of Germany had long ago suggested the possibility of the presence of potash salts somewhere in that basin, but petroleum exploration was then making little headway there and the necessary data could not be obtained. The discovery by Udden in 1912 of potash in brine from the Spur well in Dickens County, Texas, was the first direct evidence of its presence. In 1915-17 the U. S. Geological Survey drilled a test well with standard tools at Cliffside near Amarillo, but failed to find potash. Nevertheless, an observer has been kept in the field, at first in cooperation with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology but since 1922 by the Survey alone, to secure data and samples from oil and gas tests. Since the discovery of oil in Reagan County in 1923 exploration by drilling has been rapidly extended to many parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The identification of the potash-bearing mineral polyhalite was first announced by the Geological Survey in June, 1921, the material having come from cuttings from the Bryant well in Midland County and the Burns well in Dawson County, Texas. Successive discoveries and announcements of similar purport aroused widespread interest in potash exploration, which culminated in the action by Congress already noted.

Copper blast-furnace construction in America has long recognized a general standard in the rectangular water-jacketed shaft with separate forehearth. The details, however, and especially those relating to shaft dimensions, have had to meet a great variety of conditions, and show no uniformity whatever. Selecting a few of the present day Western plants, we find furnace lengths varying from 12.5 to 87 ft., widths at tuyere level from 42 to 84 in., and heights above tuyeres from 5 ft. 4 in. to 22 ft. 4 in.; and comparing present designs with those of the past, we meet contrasts no less striking. Unlike its transverse section, the length of a furnace has come to depend rather on the size of unit desired than on the requirements of smelting; and if the question of length be ignored, several of the various existing designs can be grouped together on the basis of a common transverse section. This section, having a width at tuyere level of 56 in. and a height above tuyeres of 18 ft., was developed at Great Falls, and the story of its development contains some interesting features. Ground was broken for the Great Falls works in the spring of 1891. THE problem of satisfactorily eliminating the fumes and dust which are unavoidably produced in various metallurgical and manufacturing industries is one which has received considerable attention in the past, and has been the subject of much investigation and research. The solution of this problem was urgently desired for two reasons, the principal one being the fact that a considerable percentage of the total process losses in many industries was represented by the commercial values of the fumes and dust that escaped from the stack.The other reason is that, in some instances, the emission of the matter is regarded as objectionable. Various methods have been designed with a view to solving the problem thus presented, and the latest development that has beendesigned is the process of electrostatic precipitation. Continued investigational and developmental work with this process has already demonstrated its applicability to many industries, and new uses to which the process can be put are being opened up. Its use is already widespread, and the economic success that has attended its application in most instances would indicate that its use will become more general in the future.It has proved its ability to treat gases over wide ranges of temperature, and has successfully handled various types of fumes whose chemical characteristics differ very considerably. In many processes it has now come to be regarded as standard equipment.HISTORY OF ELECTRICAL PRECIPITATIONThe first recorded observations on the influence of an electrified insulated wire on gases containing solid particles in suspension was made as early as 1824 by Hohlfeld, in Leipzig. He found that, if he electrified a wire hung in a bottle filled with smoke, the smoke cleared rapidly, and a deposit formed on the sides and bottom of the bottle.

"The paper begins with a brief summary of Professor Müller’s formation of the ISRM and the contents of the previous six Müller lectures with their emphases on rock fractures. The geological origin of fractures is described via a deformational spectrum diagram and a matrix characterising the consequences of a sequence of superimposed deformational events. The different fracture frequencies encountered along lines in all directions through a fractured rock mass are explained. The value of computer modelling and simulation is demonstrated through an example of the effects of fracture zones on the distribution of the in situ stress field. The need to establish the validity of computer programs, i.e., that the modelling/simulation, does actually represent the rock reality, is discussed with reference to the work of the DECOVALEX project. Finally, examples are given of the effects of rock fractures on engineering design and construction, from pre-split blasting to caverns.INTRODUCTIONIt is a great honour to have been chosen as the recipient of the ISRM 7th Müller Award and I am grateful to the representatives of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) National Groups who voted for me. In addition, I am especially pleased because my working life in rock mechanics and rock engineering has been devoted to understanding the geometry and mechanical properties of rock fractures and rock masses—which were the key subjects that Professor Müller promoted. In the ISRM 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, Hudson and Lamas (2012), Professor Charles Fairhurst notes that on 24 May 1962, i.e., the day before the constitutional meeting of the ISRM took place in Salzburg, a reporter asked Professor Müller, “Do we know the strength of rock?”, to which Professor Müller replied, “For rock tested in the laboratory, yes. For a rock mass, no. This is what we need to determine. This is why we need an International Society for Rock Mechanics”. Also, in his Opening Address at the 1st ISRM Congress in Lisbon, Professor Müller, as the then ISRM President stated,“Many experts agree with me that discontinuity and anisotropy are the most characteristic properties of the material rock and that the properties of jointed media depend much more upon the fabrics bond of the unit rock block system than upon the rock material. Therefore any theoretical investigation of that material has to go its own ways, in the same way as the construction material of soils years ago suggested to soil mechanics its own methods, which differ greatly from the way of thinking of technical mechanics”."

In hydrometallurgy, pure gases like oxygen and hydrogen are used for oxidation and reduction. The gases are expensive and therefore should be used efficiently. Non reacted gas can be recycled into the liquid. Historically vortex gassing has been used; Le. a mixing impeller close to the liquid surface entrains gas from the headspace into the liquid through a gas vortex. Novel and more efficient methods are surface gassing with up pumping impellers and self- inducing gassing impellers. These alternative impeller systems are well established and common in the chemical industry, but have not been used until recently in hydrometallurgy. Gassing impellers act as internal compressors and increase the interfacial surface for a much higher mass transfer compared to alternate methods mentioned. In the paper results from lab and pilot tests and data from operated plants will be presented. The reactions with gases normally take place under moderate to high pressure, therefore a safe enclosure with mechanical seals and the safety "philosophy" is important. Experienced life and replacement cycles will be reported.

From time to time the question of shearing or vertical cutting of rooms and entries especially as an adjunct to the usual horizontal cuts, has cropped up in the literature of coal mining and in the discussions of mining men. Exact and definite data based an thorough tests have usually been lacking however and the present article is written to supply as far as possible this deficiency. The tests given below were made over a period of 90 days in the summer of 1921 and the object was to investigate the general .economics, if any, that might result from the introduction of vertical cutting as a standard practice into the Clear Creek mines. The machine used was the Oldroyd Universal coal cutter and comparative tests were made against the Goodman Straight- face machine and the 35 B Jeffrey Shortwall. The tests however should be held to apply only to the various methods of cutting and not as a study in the relative merits of the various machines. The first series of tests were made in the 2nd East district of No. 3 mine, where only entries were being driven at the time, the tests therefore cover only entry work. The presumption was that the entry width would be 12 feet but the oxerrun in some cases was marked enough to make the work comparable to rooms. The first test made was to determine the time necessary to shear as well as cut the places, and the results were reduced to the time necessary to cut a ton of coal. The time for shearing in the table includes the time necessary to revolve the cutter bar to the vertical position.

The marketing of nonferrous metals and of the ores and concentrates from which these metals are recovered is a fascinating trade, international in character, sensitive to every change in the economic tide, and complex in its organization. Each individual metal has its own marketing mechanism; no two are exactly alike. The differences sometimes are a matter of tradition rather than of necessity, but usually they have developed because of the very nature of the problems of producing or consuming the individual metal. This description, because of limitations of space, can do no more than indicate the major aspects of the trade and touch lightly on the marketing structure of each metal. The dictionary states that a market is a "meeting of people for selling and buying." In the case of nonferrous metals this meeting may occur on a half-dozen different occasions between the time the ore has been first mined and the time the refined metal is available for use by industry; or it may not occur at all until after the metal itself has been rolled, drawn, stamped, cast, or forged into a useful semifabricated shape. To illustrate: A Chilean miner may sell his small ore production to a custom mill, which produces concentrates that are sold to an ore dealer, who finances shipments of the concentrate to a custom smelter, which buys them for conversion into blister, to be subsequently refined into electrolytic copper (sometimes by a refinery having no corporate ties with the custom smelter) and sold. Conversely, aluminum production is mostly by integrated concerns that mine bauxite, convert it to alumina, smelt that to produce aluminum, and then fabricate that into semifinished or even finished products before title to the material changes hands for the first time. Some nonferrous ores are not converted into metal at all but are sold by the miners or dealers directly to the ultimate consumers. A good example would be chrome ores used by the chemical industry. And of course a substantial part of the commerce in nonferrous metals is in scrap, which is the reconversion into useful form of metals that have long since been mined and smelted. "Portions of the Icy Cape placer Au district have been described and exploited since the early 1900s. Industrial studies of Au-bearing garnetrich intervals established a 3.5 million troy ounce resource in the western half of the district. This estimate is not compliant with CIM and SME definition standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. We note high variability in the textures of sediments and their heavy mineral (HM) content and composition in the district, probably as a function of the depositional environment. Sediments are medium- to fine-grained sands with a valuable HM assemblage that averages 26.0% in a range of 1.1– 72.6%. Valuable heavy minerals (VHMs) garnet, magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon, but excluding Au, average 7.9% in a range of 1.0–37.6% of the HM assemblage. Trace quantities of uraninite, thorite, monazite, xenotime, and others are noted. Garnets have an average Y content of 726 ppm with a range of 0–2150 ppm. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence confirms compositions commensurate with Ca, Al, and Mg silicates. We provide empirical analytical data and note high variability in the textures, HM content, and compositions as a probable function of depositional environment. Icy Cape District land and resources are owned by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority and managed by the Trust Land Office (TLO). IntroductionThe Icy Cape Heavy Minerals (HM) District in Alaska subtends more than 200 km2 fronting the Pacific Ocean and backing to the foot of the Robinson Mountains at about 1700 m above sea level. We classify the district into geomorphic provinces; the eastern region as deltaic (Figure 1) and the western region as coastal plain (Figure 2), based on geomorphologic expressions. The coastal plain is entirely built up of unconsolidated outwash sediments and ancient beach sand deposits."

Sediments are medium- to fine-grained sands with a valuable HM assemblage that averages 26.0% in a range of 1.1– 72.6%. Valuable heavy minerals (VHMs) garnet, magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon, but excluding Au, average 7.9% in a range of 1.0–37.6% of the HM assemblage. Trace quantities of uraninite, thorite, monazite, xenotime, and others are noted. Garnets have an average Y content of 726 ppm with a range of 0–2150 ppm. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence confirms compositions commensurate with Ca, Al, and Mg silicates. We provide empirical analytical data and note high variability in the textures, HM content, and compositions as a probable function of depositional environment. IntroductionThe Icy Cape Heavy Minerals (HM) District in Alaska subtends more than 200 km2 fronting the Pacific Ocean and backing to the foot of the Robinson Mountains at about 1700 m above sea level. We classify the district into geomorphic provinces; the eastern region as deltaic (Figure 1) and the western region as coastal plain (Figure 2), based on geomorphologic expressions. The coastal plain is entirely built up of unconsolidated outwash sediments and ancient beach sand deposits."

Coal mining ceased at Strongman Mine this year after 70 years of production. Underground mining finished in 2003 and opencast methods began in 1998. During the life of the mine, 8 million tonnes of coal was extracted from two underground mines and 1.2 million tonnes removed through opencast methods. Strongman Mine is within the Grey Coal Fields; various seams have been extracted from the Rewanui Coal Measures. Coal extracted was predominantly of thermal or semi-soft specifications and characterised by low sulphur and low ash.   The area has steep topography, high rainfall (>3000 mm/yr) and is particularly exposed to westerly quarter winds. Strongman 1 and 2 underground mines are located in the steep, narrow valley which leads to the Strongman Opencast at the top of the valley. Subsidence from underground mining combined with spontaneous combustion, has resulted in an underground fire which has had substantial surface effects. Opencast mining in the steep topography resulted in several landslides at the perimeters of the site. These factors, along with water management, topsoil management and erosion control have added to the complexity of rehabilitating the site.   Rehabilitation of the site is well underway, including infrastructure removal, final landform creation and revegetation of the Strongman Opencast footprint (~45 hectares). Some innovative methods of rehabilitation have been trialled. Successful trials such as helicopter-seeding and moss hydro-seeding on highwalls are now routinely used along with traditional revegetation practices. 18 hectares disturbed land has been replanted with 88 000 seedlings, and another 200 000 seedlings are scheduled for planting over the three years. Fire management is an ongoing challenge; however thermal photography shows a steady decrease in hot areas which have been contained by grout curtains.   Mine closure is some time away and will occur after all standards set by Solid Energy and regulatory bodies are achieved.

THE importance, to geologists and metallurgists, of knowing the mineralogical forms in which the silver occurs in ores has increased during the past few years, and will continue to increase as long as working hypotheses are converted into proved theories and rule of thumb methods are supplanted by scientific data. The methods used for the determination of these silver minerals have been: (1) careful study of polished ore sections with the microscope, and more recently, (2) metallurgical separation of the ground ore by flotation, tabling and panning, supplemented by microscopic examination of these separated minerals, and chemical analyses. During the course of some experimental work carried on by the testing department of the International Smelting Co. and myself, it became important to determine, in a general way, the distribution of the silver values in the minerals, as they exist in Tintic Standard and North Lilly siliceous oxidized lead-silver ores. These mines are in the East Tintic Mining District, State of Utah. In this work the second method was used. Differential flotation tests were run, separating the sulfide from the oxidized minerals, and the products were assayed. Various concentrates were carefully panned and the separated products assayed; special samples of ore were selected and assayed. The microscope was used only for the purpose of determin; ing whether the individual minerals were in the so-called "free" state. Analysis of Tintic Ores These chemical and mineralogical determinations showed the silver to be present as native silver, argento jarosite, argentite, and combined or inherent in the tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, cerussite, anglesite, mimetite, malachite, iron oxide and occluded in the quartz. Careful microscopic work would probably show other forms in small amounts, such as the halide silver minerals and some of the antimony sulfide combinations. The tabulation of the analyses of the various products (Table 1) shows no evidences of fixed ratios of silver to any particular base metal.
