MineSense Technologies Ltd. is revolutionising grade control at mining operations by installing ShovelSense® sensors on buckets that measure the grade of every load before it is dumped in the truck. This allows the mine to exploit grade variations at a resolution that was not available before, reducing the amount of ore loss to the waste stream and removing waste from material destined for processing. These changes dramatically improve the profitability and sustainability of mining operations. ShovelSense relies on X-ray fluorescence analysis of the rocks as they flow in the bucket and is integrated with fleet management to direct the trucks to the right destination. Lab simulations of ShovelSense measurements on porphyry copper ores show correlations between predictions and lab measurements at 0.98 r-squared with a coefficient of variation of 10 per cent. Visualisation of copper grade predictions in three dimensions shows a reasonable match with the dig plan, but with local changes in the ore-waste contact due to more accurate contact identification, related to blast movement and other mining factors. Correct delineation of these contacts ensures ore trucks are not sent to the waste dump and waste trucks are diverted from the crusher, creating enormous value for the operation and the environment.

Slag from stainless steelmaking is known to disintegrate, which is an environmental problem and prevents the cooled slag from being utilized. This disintegration is due to the transformation from the ßto the ? polymorph of di-calcium silicate. The transformation is accompanied by an increase in volume of about 11% and a total disintegration of the slag. AOD slag from stainless steelmaking was re-melted in a laboratory induction furnace, together with olivine and calcinated dolomite, to investigate the prevention of disintegration by increased MgO content of the slag with small changes in CaO to SiO2ratio. The modified slag was examined with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The trials showed that an increased MgO content can change the mineral composition towards formation of more Merwinite and Bredigite, which prevents disintegration of the slag. "The deep-buried rock surrounding the Jinping II Hydro-power Station was taken as the engineering background. Using model specimens of classified rock materials to simulate fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress conditions, the test about acoustic propagation law on single fracture model of specimen under different pressures and different angles were carried out. The variation of p-wave velocity in fractured rock mass and axial stress-strain relationship in the whole test procedure was also studied. Based on damage mechanics principle and the acoustic wave propagation in cracked rock mass, comparative study on damage constitutive relation of fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress in consideration of equivalent strain and equivalent energy was performed. As the results showed, with the change of axial stress level under constant confining pressure, the change in wave velocity can be divided into three stages: slow increase (small variation in amplitude), rapid reduce (large variation in amplitude ) and accelerate reduction. When the confining pressure is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the decrease of the crack angle.When the crack angle is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the increase of confining pressure.It is identified that the theoretical calculation results of constitutive relation about elasto-plastic damage model containing variable wave velocity in the fractured rock mass is consistent with the model test results.Therefore,the constitutive relation can provide reasonable suggestions for engineering practice. INTRODUCTIONThere are a lot of joints and fractures in surrounding rock mass of deep-lying in the Jinping-II hydropower station, which has a great influence on the physical and mechanical properties of rocks and effects the acoustic wave propagation and attenuation law in rock. Many previous research and project examples has proved that sound propagation parameters are closely related to crack and stress condition. Thus, it has certain theoretical significance and practical application value to carry out researches on sound propagation characteristics and establish damage constitutive model of fractured rock mass which is related to sound propagation parameters."

ABSTRACT We report the results of a model-testing program to evaluate the strength characteristics of non-persistent joints. We describe the conditions under which new tensile cracks generate and propagate to connect existing joints so that the rock mass becomes fractured into several blocks, leading to a low strength. The strength of some models was equal to that along a single joint through the full sample length. In models with two joint sets, failure took place along a composite plane, partly sliding along a discontinuous joint and shearing through the intervening intact block of rock, or else by rotation and sliding of the blocks. This last failure mode could also lead to very low model strength. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Bericht beschreibt die Ergebnisse von Versuchen mit Modellfelsmassen um den Einfluâ von unterbrochenen Rissen in ihrer Widerstandsfähigkeit zu untersuchen. Es werden die Umstände beschrieben unter denen neue Zugrisse entstehen, sich verbreiten, sich mit bestehenden Rissen verbinden und die Felsmasse in mehrere Felsblöcke zerlegen und zu einer kleinen Widerstandsfestigkeit führen. Nous décrivons les conditions sous lesquelles des nouvelles fissures de traction peuvent s’engendrer et se propager pour faire la connection avec des fractures existantes, de façon que le rocher se fracture en plusieurs blocs, menant à une résistance réduite. La résistance de quelques modèles fut égale a celle d’une fracture traversant toute la longueur du modèle. Pour les modèles ayant deux ensembles de fractures, la rupture a eu lieu sur une surface mixte, causée d’une part, par le glissement sur une fracture discontinue et d’autre part, par la rupture à travers le pont de matériel intact; ou bien par rotation et glissement des blocs. I welcome this opportunity to give a Congressman's birdseye view of a subject which I believe holds great potential for the future in helping meet the needs of people, with minimal adverse impact on the environment. All mankind, not just the people in this great nation, faces the need for additional usable space. In some parts of the United States the problem arises from rapid urbanization of the surface and little utilization of the subsurface. Everywhere there is an increasing problem of insufficient space arising out of the increasing population crush and growing demands for open space, housing, water, transportation, communication, and social service. You are the technicians to whom we look for assistance in finding answers. We look to you also to provide guidance for broad policy decisions concerning underground space. I prepared for a career practicing law, but since 1952 I have been a member of the House of Representatives. In this latter capacity I deal with programs designed to help solve all kinds of problems. But, naturally, I am especially interested in the water scarcity and other environmental problems of my home state of Arizona and the arid and semi-arid areas in the West. This North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference has as its theme: "Tomorrow's Tunneling Technology Today." I have a very great interest in this potential of our underground space resource. The Central Arizona Project now getting underway in my state will consist in part of tunnels and underground pipelines to convey life-sustaining water from the Colorado River to people and lands across Arizona to the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

The penetration of sustainability principles in business practices has introduced the necessity for a simultaneous integrated assessment of the corporate economic, environmental and social performances. Continuous technological, political and legal evolutions indicate that Sustainable Development (SD) principles will soon have to be implemented in all sectors of the Greek corporate reality, among them in the Mineral and Mining Industry. However, the ultimate criteria for the evaluation of a company?s performance remain its profitability and its market value. Managers, shareholders, financial intermediaries, all alike, emphasize and base their decisions on the various accounting produced ratios of return (ROA, ROE, ROCE, Residual Value) included, or produced by data found, in the financial statements of the companies. This paper offers evidence that the traditional accounting ratios discourage the implementation of investment plans that aim at improving the environmental performance of companies and therefore can be inadequate and misguiding for SD applications. International studies have consistently traced a positive relationship between the environmental performances of firms and their financial positions. Yet, the fact that investors tend to reward proactive companies by increasing their corporate values is disregarded by the return ratios, which usually set up the basis for management rewards and bonuses. The book value of the firm assets and owners? equity from which such ratios are produced diverges strongly from the real corporate value, defined as the traded amount for the stock of a firm. There is an urgent need for an adjustment of the return ratios so that they can record the positive economic impact of a more sustainable attitude and encourage decision makers towards this direction.

During 1953-55, 31,105 miles of pipe for transporting crude petroleum and refined products was laid in the United States, a total slightly below that of the prior 3-year period, according to data compiled by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. The added mileage consisted of 22,571 miles of new pipe, representing about 2,163,807 tons of steel, plus 8,534 miles of secondhand pipe, equivalent to about 419,849 additional tons of steel. During the 3-year period, 13,069 miles of pipe was taken up. By January 1, 1956, the Nation had 188,540 miles of pipeline, an 11-percent gain over the 1952 total of 170,504 miles. The greater use of larger diameter pipelines indicated in recent surveys has continued, as the mileage for sizes 12 inches and over increased from 13 percent of the total mileage at the close of 1952 to 16 percent 3 years later. Crude-oil trunklines 12 inches and over in diameter gained 24 percent during 1953-55, and these larger lines represented 30 percent of the total mileage compared with 25 percent at the close of 1952. Furthermore, the mileage for crude-oil lines less than 12 inches in diameter declined 2 percent and made up only 70 percent of the 1955 total against 75 percent n the previous survey. Product Lines 8 inches and over increased 43 percent from 1952 through 1955 and composed 70 percent of the total mileage compared with 66 percent in 1952.

Kwanyin Tunnel is presently the longest (7.7 km) railway tunnel in Taiwan. Due to heavy railway traffic, a pass-by station will be built inside the tunnel to increase the traffic flow. Since the concentration of toxic gases released by the locomotives may reach dangerous levels, a research program was conducted for the purpose of designing a ventilation system which could dilute and/or remove the toxic gases to maintain an acceptable pollutant level. The program consisted of two parts. The first part was field measurement during which the concentrations of pollutants and wind velocities were measured at various points inside the tunnel to acquire basic data regarding ambient air quality, piston effects for the different types of trains, and existing ventilation conditions. Weather data (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind direction and velocity) were gathered at many stations, both on the surface and inside the tunnel. The amount of pollutants released by each type of locomotive for various conditions were also measured. The second part of this study involved establishing mathematical models for predicting the air quality of the various proposed ventilation systems. Three different models were used for this work. The first one is a piston effect model which assumes that the gases and air undergo immediate mixing inside the tunnel. The second one is also a piston effect model which assumes that the diffusion ability of the gases is zero. The third one is a conventional ventilation model which was used for natural and mechanical ventilation conditions. From the result of field measurement and mathematical model studies, a ventilation system was chosen with consideration of both ventilation effects and construction costs.

The high capital outlay and operating cost of a dragline necessitates strict control of all aspects of the dragline operation. Before purchasing a dragline, a complete evaluation of all the parameters that can affect the viability, now and in the future, of the dragline operation needs to be completed. Such parameters as thickness of burden, material properties (swell), “castability”, pit width and pit length, etc. need to be considered.

This paper discusses accident experience and costs in 150 Colorado coal mines for the 5 years 1929-33; these mines produced 62 percent of Colorado's coal tonnage during this period. This and similar studies by the United states Bureau of Mines in other States (listed in the appendix to this report) make available comparable information on mine-accident costs and bring out clearly the importance of accident reduction from the humanitarian as well as from the economic standpoint. Compensation insurance costs constitute a considerable part of the cost of coal output. The tendency toward greater liberalization of workmen's compensation laws and increased benefits thereunder may mitigate to some extent the seriousness of an accident to a worker and his dependents, but no compensation is paid ultimately, not by an insurance fund but by the mine operator and the general public, which includes the miner. The one really effective method of reducing compensation costs is to reduce the number and severity of accidents.

This paper summarizes the results of an investigation into possibly the largest coal pillar failure in the USA. The newly opened drift mine is located in Southeastern Kentucky and worked an 11 feet thick coal seam, all other mines in the District worked seams 4-5 feet thick. The initial mine development consisted of 14 main entries (Fig. 1) which were driven in two sets of 7, under increasing depth of overburden. As the left seven entries came under deeper overburden the pillar ribs began sloughing which caused many of the concrete-block ventilation stoppings to crack. The mine management stopped the advance in the left seven and continued with the right seven entries. During the spring of the following year development resumed in the left seven, rib sloughage occurred again and this time severely cracked many stoppings and many were totally disintegrated from the excessive deformation. Within few weeks the sloughage was so heavy that many of these entries behind the active face were filled with piles of sloughed coal slabs. When the face reached a depth approximately 1150 feet, the sloughage became a slow, massive squeeze. The entry convergence (closure) reduced their height from 11 to 7-8 feet and the squeeze spread back to shallower depth covering an area roughly 300 pillars.

During the war, the Navy undertook the construction, under my direction, of an experimental gun embodying features designed to lessen the cost and time of production. These experiments were initiated after representations as to their desirability had been offered by myself, by the Naval Consulting Board, and by the National Research Council. The first drawings were made in June, 1917, and the experiment was completed in November, 1918. For the sake of clearness it will pay to recapitulate briefly the fundamental idea of gun construction. It is well known that if a hollow cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure, the maximum stress occurs in the inside layers, the outer parts carrying much less than their due share of the stress. This inequality of stress is more pronounced the thicker the walls of the cylinder. If such a cylinder is pushed to the elastic limit, failure in elasticity will take place long before the outer lagers have reached the limit of their capacity. Economical use of the material would demand, however, that all parts of the cylinder reach the limits of their capacity simultaneously. This may be brought about, at least in cylinders of not too great thickness, by producing in the inner layers an initial compression, and in the outer layers an initial tension. The effect of internal pressure is at first to relieve the compression of the inside layers, while increasing the tension of the outside layers. If the initial stresses are properly distributed, all parts of the cylinder will reach their elastic limits simultaneously, thus giving a cylinder of maximum strength for its weight. In gun construction as hitherto practiced, this initial distribution of stress is produced either by winding the inner tube with wire, a common English practice, or by shrinking hoops over the inner tube, which has been the standard American practice. IN this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a mininium amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are lime, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insurmountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. LIME PLANT When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to be the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future. Burnt lime is received loose in standard gage box cars. This is the product of the kilns and has had no screening or sorting. A grab sample is taken from each car as it is unloaded. Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

El presente estudio revisa el panorama historiográfico sobre las etapas del minado de tajo abierto desde el pasado, presente hasta el futuro. En el pasado, la minera superficial a tajo abierto surgió para obtener principalmente materiales no metálicos de construcción, alcanzando su auge a partir de las últimas décadas del siglo pasado. Sin embargo, existieron algunos obstáculos en el desarrollo de su mecanización y tecnología que posteriormente fueron mejoradas. Posteriormente, existe una competencia por desarrollar equipos mecánicos de mayor capacidad y operación, como un interés por el advenimiento de nuevas tecnologías y uso de la investigación. Finalmente, el panorama sobre el futuro del minado a cielo abierto, presenta condiciones en las que no se asume nuevos progresos mecánicos ni mayores espectativas que en el pasado.
