Tunnel stability has an important role in the production process of an underground coal mine. There are various methods for analysing tunnel stability, such as numerical methods and analytical methods. In this paper, numerical methods (Phase2 software) have been used to determine tunnel wall displacement in a mining tunnel of the Parvade underground coal mine. The Ground Reaction Curve has also been drawn using analytical methods to determine tunnel wall displacement. The comparison of results from the numerical method and the analytical method show a noteworthy difference in the tunnel wall displacement. The displacement calculated by the numerical method shows a lower value than that of the analytical method because the numerical method is more suited to modeling the various coal and rock layers, as well as the shape of the excavations found in coal mines. The methodology used in this paper together with the results obtained from both methods can serve as useful tools for the coal mine design engineer when determining the ground support requirements.

INTRODUCTION DURING the past two decades considerable progress has been made in the art of manufacturing heater alloys. The conventional iron-chromium-nickel alloys have been improved by the addition of small quantities of other elements. Up to the present time, to our knowledge, there has not appeared a systematic study of these alloys where the newer tools of investigation have been brought to bear on the problem. It is not yet clear what roles the additional elements play in increasing life time in usage. As a first approximation one might guess that elements such as manganese, silicon, zirconium, calcium and aluminum would aid in the formation of a protective film on the alloy surface, thus retarding the oxidation rate and increasing lifetime. If these additional elements do form protective oxides in the outer surface of the oxide film, it may be possible to identify them by means of reflection electron diffraction. It is also possible that the additional elements may not diffuse to the surface but may remain at the interface between the oxide and the metal. Then, too, the major elements in the alloys undoubtedly form oxides which are stratified on the surface. If the minor elements concentrate in a layer in contact with the substrate where they undergo oxidation and if this oxide film offers resistance to the diffusion of iron, chromium and nickel ions, then the lifetime of the heater element might be expected to increase. It is also possible that preferential reduction in the diffusion rates of the several ions may occur to such a degree that oxides may form in the body of the film and on the outer surface which are different from those that would normally form if the additional elements were not present. The use of transmisson electron diffraction may aid us in interpreting these phenomena. Up to the present time all of the factors which influence the lifetime of a given heater element are not definitely known. Among these are: (I) The rate of oxidation of the alloy. This may be dependent upon the composition and the physical state of the alloy. (2) The stability of the structure of the coating which forms. Transitions from one structure to another or solid phase reactions resulting in a change of composition may occur. The tendency of the film to adhere to the substrate when heated and cooled successively will be important. (3) The evaporation of various constituents from the alloy such as the removal of carbon by oxygen in a decarburization reaction. With these possibilities in view, an electron diffraction study of the oxides occurring on six different nickel-chromium alloys was undertaken with the hope that the results of this study could be correlated with oxidation rate studies as determined by means of the vacuum microbalance method1 and with

"As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity.Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nations underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-mid-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.IntroductionThe ultimate goal for any coal mining company is to effectively use its human and financial resources to maximize its profits through the extraction of its reserves. Although recent workforce reductions in the industry have resulted in a more efficient use of labor and increased productivity, there comes a point in time when further reductions in the numbers of workers in each operating section are impossible with existing equipment. For example, Farinelli and Bise (1987) found that labor cost constituted 62% - 73% of the cost per ton of coal at the mining section, with a minimum crew size. Thereafter, efforts to increase productivity must focus on more efficient mine plans and technology.The fact that an increase in productivity can be realized by reducing non-productive time (change-out and tram time) and converting it to productive time has been known and demonstrated for quite some time. What has not been demonstrated frequently is the quantification of the potential productivity increase of currently emerging technology or ""add-on"" equipment. It is one thing to be able to say that a piece of equipment will make an operation more productive, but it is another thing to be able to quantify the productivity increase that will justify the purchase of the new equipment. Not only is a financial benefit possible in room-and-pillar mining with an increase in productivity, but a decrease in the time necessary to develop a longwall panel can also occur.The purpose of this paper is an analyze the impacts of a changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to several scenarios incorporating emerging technology. To do this, four cases will be developed. A base case, consisting of the typical manner in which continuous-miner sections are currently operating, is compared to three layouts incorporating: (1) flooded-bed scrubbers on radio remote-controlled continuous miners, (2)a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters, and (3) a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters used in conjunction with a continuous-haulage system."

Effects of moisture absorption on the behavior of the Dykersburg shale overlying Harrisburg coal seam in Southern Illinois are presented in this paper. Cylindrical samples of the shale 2.5 cm in diameter and 5.0 cm long were studied for weight gain and swelling strains at 90, 95, and 100 percent relative humidity and under immersed water conditions. After attaining equilibrium conditions, the samples were studied for changes in the strength and deformation behavior. The depth of moisture penetration was measured using the Vickers microhardness measurements. Using the basic mass transfer concepts, effective diffusion coefficients were computed for the shale.

"The Last Chance claim is about 13 miles north of the village of Nicola and northeast of the city of Merritt; in the south-central part of British Columbia. It lies within Nicola mining division on the northern slope of Swakum mountain; near its summit. It may be reached by means of a branch road from the Kamloops-Merritt highway that leaves the highway at Nicola.The property was originally staked as a copper prospect by Oscar Schmidt in 1916. A number of cuts were driven and a test shipment of 22 tons of ore, averaging 4.6 per cent copper, was made from the surface showings. The property was then optioned to Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, who did a small amount of drilling, after which the option was abandoned. The same year an option was secured by Northwestern Mines, Limited, of Spokane, and a SO-foot shaft was sunk. This option also was abandoned and after a number of years the property lapsed, but was re-staked in 1942 as a tungsten prospect along with other claims, and was drilled for the Metals Controller in 1943."

A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino mine. The efficiency with which the various samples could be ground was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from different locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale non-homogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully.

As part of a general preliminary investigation of lead-zinc deposits in Stevens County, Wash., the Electric Point and Gladstone mines on Gladstone Mountain, in the Northport Mining District, were examined by R. M. Gammell, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1946. A trenching and sampling program was executed later the same year under' the supervision of Miro Mihelich and the author. This report presents the factual data obtained from the trenching and sampling operations.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled- waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SB) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

The U.S. economy boomed in 1965, completing its fifth consecutive year of expansion. Although the advance was somewhat irregular, previous records for production, sales, employment, and income were topped. During the first few months of 1965, as the economy recovered from the depressing effects of the automobile strikes of late 1964, increases were unusually large. The gains moderated in early spring, but were stimulated at midyear by sharply rising capital outlays, excise tax cuts, in? creased Social Security payments, and accelerated Viet-Nam defense expenditures. Gross national product (GNP) in cur-rent dollars rose $49.5 billion or 7.8 percent, to a total of S681.2 billion. In constant dollars (effects of price changes eliminated), GNP increased 5.9 percent, a rate considerably higher than the historical postwar annual average growth of 3.5 per-cent. Demand increased in most final markets and was especially strong for business fixed investment and consumption expenditures. With the exception of construction, most of the increases in GNP were real, since prices increased less than 2 percent.

Commercialisation of outcomes from research projects is a process often poorly understood and managed, but has the potential to achieve significant benefits for the industry and community as a whole. JKTech Pty Ltd was established in 1986 to transfer viable research outcomes from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) at The University of Queensland, Australia. This paper describes successful and unsuccessful examples of commercialisation by JKTech over the years, and draws some conclusions as to the factors that contribute to success and failure in technology transfer.

In 1992, the United States economy grew at a rate of 2%. The Gross Domestic Product rose to $5,946 billion. With 257 million people - 635,000 in mining including petroleum - the United States has more than 100 million dwelling units and more than 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts rose I 1 % to 1.2 million units. New car production rose 4% to 5.7 million units. Truck and bus production rose 20% to 4 million units. The rate of inflation was 3.5% and the prime rate of interest was 6.25%. The Producer Price Index (1982 =100) was relatively unchanged from 1991 as follows: fuels and related products and power 80, metals and metal products 119, chemicals and allied products 126 and nonmetallic mineral products 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, rose 3% to 455 Mm3 (2.9 billion bbl). Domestic petroleum production fell 1 % to 582 Mm3 (3.5 billion bbl). Petroleum supplied about 41 % of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 23%. Coal production, 60% from surface operations, rose 1 % to 914 Mt (1 billion st). About 78% was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked. Exports valued at $4 billion included 57 Mt (63 million st) of metallurgical coal and 39 Mt (43 million st) of steam coal. Ura¬nium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 18% to 3 kt (3300 st) U308.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

A computational method for the simulation of mold filling processes is described. The method is based on the representation of the flowing or deforming medium as a collection of mutually interacting parcels of material. Instantaneous positions of individual material parcels are calculated by numerical integration of the dynamic equations, subject to appropriate initial and boundary conditions. So far, the method has been used to produce qualitative simulations of some flowing and deforming systems encountered in mold filling technology, and our findings are summarized herein. In all cases, individual material particle motions can be followed in detail, allowing critical examination of potentially problematic mold design features.

Iron containing leach residues like jarosite and goethite from electrolytic zinc production contain many valuable metals and harmful substances. These metals and substances should be removed in order to obtain an acceptable, stable and reusable product, and maximize economic feasibility as well as minimize environmental footprint. In this work, the processing of jarosite leach residue was studied in laboratory scale experiments under oxidizing and reducing conditions at high temperatures. First, the pretreated material was melted and oxidized to produce a melt of metal oxides. Second, the oxide melt was reduced in CO–CO2 atmosphere. Target after the reduction step was to obtain a clean slag and a liquid metal or speiss phase that collects the valuable metals, such as silver. The kinetics of the thermal processing were studied for determining optimal times and conditions for the aforementioned process steps. The preliminary results show that the process is thermodynamically feasible, and the desired phases can be obtained in the experimental conditions investigated.

PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: We have with us a gentleman from Utah, who is familiarly known -as the "Mudite King," Mr. Reid, of the Lion Coal Company. Here is a letter I would like to read, and probably Mr. Reid will give us an idea of his Mudite machine, or the results he is obtaining. This question was brought up in Rock Springs, Wyoming, but Mr. Reid was not there personally during the discussion, but Mr. Burnell, who is general superintendent of the Lion Coal Com¬pany, as much as he possibly could, described the system and its effects. I believe Mr. Reid will probably be able to give a somewhat clearer statement this afternoon. This letter is from the Coal Mining Inspector of the State of Utah, John Crawford. "February 10, 1925. "The Industrial Commission of Utah, Building. "Statement of John Crawford, Coal Mine Inspector, in regard to Muditing in Coal Mines: "That Muditing used in connection with our present sprinkling system in coal mines is the missing link to the system we have had heretofore, because the water applied by the former system began to dry out, in heavy air currents, the moment it was put on. Consequently the dust that had been humidified by sprinkling, came back to its natural condition, and if anything, the combustible parts of it, in my opinion, were more intensified than previous to being wetted down. "The advantages that Muditing has over the old system of sprinkling are: "1st. The dust that is on the roof, timbers and sides of the entry is washed completely off and rolled up in the Mudite solution which entirely destroys the wings, crudely speaking, of the fine coal dust. "2nd. Sprinkling with the Mudite system, the water and mud is of greater extent than could be applied with a hand hose by a sprinkler. This sprinkling can be done while the mine is in operation, just the same as if water alone was being used. "3rd. The Mudite solution, when dried out, leaves a coating which serves as an armour to the coal, so that in the event of a local explosion, the inflammable matter on the coal is non-combustible; whereas, if that same coal had been sprinkled with water only, and made free of dust, the heat would have the same effect on the coal as it has on a stove when coal is thrown into it-instantaneous combustion. "Therefore, it is my opinion that the Mudite system is the missing link to the perfecting of our sprinkling system here in Utah. "(Signed) JOHN CRAWFORD." An experimental investigation of sovlze low .melting point alloys sJtows that a substvucture of isolated depressions can be the first manvestation of constitutional supercooling on solid-liquid interjaces veuealed by decanting. In contrast, the pox structuve, a set of projections often veported in the literature, leaves no trace oj. segvegation. These obserl;atims, accovlrpanied by a brief review of recent literature, point to inconsistencies between experirrental obsevvation and the idea that the fornzation of a projection is a causal step in the development of a cellular substructure. An argument is presented to show instead how it is plausible for substantial depvessiom to form in the pvesence of constitutional supercooling at dislocations threading the solid-liquid interjace. THE development of constitutional supercooling during growth from the melt leads to the formation of the cellular solidification substructure. This well-founded association between structure and instability has been basic in understanding cellular substructure and micro segregation; however, the initial formation of structure seems unclear. Rutter and Chalmers,&apos; in definitive experiments and theory, noted that in the presence of constitutional a planar interface might break down: "resulting in the formation of a small projection on an initially plane or uniformly curved interface." That is, the breakdown from a planar to a cellular interface was implied to be initiated via a projection into the unstable liquid. Later, Walton et (11. found that a structure of isolated projections, termed "pox", appeared at solid-liquid interfaces decanted under growth conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling; the pox were taken as the indication of the instability promoted by the supercooling. Tiller and Rutter4 in their extensive work studied the shape transitions at decanted interfaces which were generally observed to proceed as— pox, "irregular cells", elongated cells, regular (hexagonal) cells, and so forth. The pox varied in size from lo-&apos; to 1CT4 cm, and tended to disappear as cells increased in number and regularity, but as noted,4 the first real array of cells did not seem to be a development from the pox. In fact these authors implied a lack of connection because they stated that the pox are denser on "irregular cells", and as cell boundaries increase in number (i.e., the cells become smaller) there is less need for the pox which do dis- appear. Thereafter, most authors dealing with either experiment or theory have accepted the reality of pox and have used them as a criterion for the onset of constitutional supercooling. In contrast, Spittle, Hunt, and smiths have now suggested that pox are irrelevant artifacts comprised of such things as entrapped oxide. This proposal invokes the observations of weinberg6 and chadwick7 each of whom have shown that the act of decanting leaves a residual liquid on a decanted interface; the remnant solid layer of the order 10 p may thus contain particles that might have been transported from the external surfaces, or elsewhere, during decanting. With the incentive of this suggestion,= some further experiments and a reexamination of the literature have been conducted, in order to question the validity of pox as evidence of an instability and to examine the initial development of the cellular substructure. 1) EXPERIMENTS Single crystals of zone-refined tin (-99.9999 pct) were grown from the melt in a controlled fashion with various, small concentration additions of lead and antimony, for which ko < 1 and > 1, respectively. The crystals were decanted at conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling and were thus appropriate for observation of slight perturbations. It was possible to observe two types of small departure from smooth or "planar" interfaces in both cases of lead or antimony additions. Some were projections and others, if in regular array of any type, were depressions. The crystals were etched with suitable reagents progressively dissolving the decanted interface surface; projections left no record, but depressions were continuously associated with spotlike areas contrasting with the rest of the interface. Traverses were made with the beam of an electron microprobe across the regions of contrast; with lead addition the persistent spots were lead-rich, and with antimony addition the persistent spots were antimony-poor. This is consistent only with a dominant role for depressions, because if the projections had left spots but were incorrectly catalogued, a reversed observation should have been made; that is, the Pb(ko < 1) should have been depleted and the Sb(ko > 1) enriched. In the work of Cole and inegard, and elewhere, regular arrays of structure associated with the initial stage of instability have been shown, in photographs and represented as pox or projections. We believe this to be erroneous, by inference, since whenever a regular array was observed, in the present examination, it consisted of depressions, regardless of the nature of the solute, ko 1. Fig. 1 is reproduced8 as an ideal example of the possible optical illusion involved; the observer can satisfy himself from the distribution of illuminated areas that the markings are depressions. The influence of different grinding methods on the shape characteristics of magnetite particles was investigated. Also, the effect of particle shape on the flotation of the magnetite, both alone and in the presence of quartz particles, was investigated. The shape characteristics of the magnetite particles were measured and calculated from images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation tests were performed using a laboratory flotation cell. Results showed that in the -250+212 µm and -106+75 µm size fractions, ball mill products have a higher elongation value than rod mill products, while in the -150+125 µm size fraction, rod mill products have a higher elongation value. Particles with higher elongation values and lower roundness values have a higher flotation kinetic constant. Furthermore, the influence of magnetite particle shape on flotation is greater, and the flotation kinetic constant is higher, in the presence of quartz particles than in the flotation of magnetite alone Keywords shape, elongation value, flotation kinetics, magnetite.

The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The particularity of the assessment is determined by the risk in question.
