The Barlow Lake stratigraphic section comprises the top of the Gilman Formation, the Blondeau Formation and the three sills of the Cummings Complex. Representative samples were analysed to allow characterization of the chemo-stratigraphic profile and geochemical affinity of the six rock facies found in the section. All the mineralized horizons are associated with sedimentary units. Geochemical signatures associated with the mineralizations are either very weak or very localized and shown by increases in K20 around the mineralizations and Fe203 near them. The mineralizations are stratiform, synvolcanic but resedimented and remobilized by regional metamorphism and possibly by hydrothermal activity initiated by the intrusion of the Cummings Complex. The evolution of the sedimentary basin with the decrease of its depth is confirmed by the chemo-stratigraphic profiles. Stratigraphic position in the section is important in order that the chemo-stratigraphy may serve as a guide for mining exploration in the distal facies of the Blondeau Formation.

Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.'s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding South Deep mine. Several technical investigations had been carried out before and during construction of the plugs in order to reduce the probability of groundwater flow through the boundary pillar between the two mines or through the rock mass immediately around the plugs. This paper describes the geological, hydrogeological and stability investigations carried out to evaluate the structural competence of the boundary pillar.

A study has been conducted to remove iron from sulfate solutions using Eichrom's Dipexo® extractant, P,P'-di(2ethylhexyl) methanediphosponic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It is found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. Over 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

THE present ruling principle in shop and factory, induced by conditions of. keen competition, is to do the greatest amount of work in the shortest time, or in other words, to secure the greatest output at least cost, a condition which generally necessitated the substitution of machinery for manual labor. The chemical laboratory in our industrial establishments has remained a factor of minor importance, and, for this, reason, not only has progress been permitted to lag, but the methods of analytical work have been carried on along individual traditional lines. Some works-laboratories are equipped with such conveniences as Gooch filters, suction-pumps, compressed air, shaking-machines, centrifugal machines, crushers, etc., yet there is much room for improvement, particularly in laboratories of metal smelting and refining plants, in which long series of filtrations and stirrings are performed singly by hand in a slow and laborious manner. There are also many other instances in which collective handling appears rational. As a rule the chemist wastes much time by such manual labor, which, in a modern establishment and under up-to-date management, could be more advantageously applied to useful chemical work; and such higher chemical work is gradually and surely becoming recognized as an essential extension of old-time methods of assaying. While it maybe said that in some laboratories, boys and not chemists do the manual labor, it should be borne in mind that all chemical work requires care and accuracy and in these respects boys are naturally a source of concern to the responsible chemist. Moreover, the cheapness of child-labor is largely offset by the increase in the expense-account of laboratory materials, caused chiefly by breakages resulting from care¬lessness. The size by size batch flotation behaviour of copper activated sphalerite from synthetic mixtures with quartz was determined. In terms of recovery of sphalerite, the size fractions could be grouped into coarse, intermediate, and fine ranges. The behaviour of the coarse and fine ranges was significantly poorer than that of the intermediate range in both the extent and rate of flotation.Each size fraction had a fast and a slow floating component.The main effect of changing the copper sulphate addition was to alter the proportion of any size fraction which was fast floating. No correlation could be found, between the amount of copper on the spha:lerite andeither the flotation rate of the mineral or the amount of copper added to the system. It was found that fine particles did not appear to consume greatly disproportionate amounts of copper sulphate during conditioning. A modified conditioning procedure was found to lead to a higher rate of flotation and recovery of coarse sphalerite and to make poss1ble substantial savings of copper sulphate.

Namakwa Sands aims to conserve environmental resources and prevent or minimize environmental impacts from its operations. The challenge faced by Namakwa Sands is the rehabilitation of the arid winter rainfall Strandveld and lowland Succulent Karoo vegetation zones affected by its mining activities. Extensive experimentation with different rehabilitation methods resulted in the development of an effective rehabilitation programme. The use of topsoil as a seed bank and shade-cloth as windbreaks have significantly aided the rehabilitation process. The aim of the programme is to stabilize the soil environment so as to allow the germination and development of the local plant species. The ability to control wind erosion is critical to the success of the rehabilitation effort. A programme of biodiversity audits has been started to measure the recovery of plant species in the rehabilitated area. The principle of continuous improvement, coupled to site-specific rehabilitation studies, is applied to enhance the rehabilitation programme.

Microorganisms are finding more use in the mineral industry, with extensive research efforts being reported in 1991. Most of these research efforts were presented in two major meetings, the SME Annual Meeting in Denver (February, 1991) and the Engineering Foundation Conference about Mineral Bioprocessing in Santa Barbara (June 1991). In addition, several articles were published in the IMM Transactions, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing and Water, Air. and Solid Pollution Journal. The literature can be categorized as: • Review articles presenting an overview of the activities in the use of biotechnology in mineral processing. • Research efforts into genetic manipulation of microorganisms to perform a specified job. • Studies in bioleaching of metals from different types of ores. • Biotreatment of wastes from the mineral industry including acidic mine waters, uranium tailings, cyanide destruction, etc. • Investigations into the role of microorganisms in the energy materials, such as oil, coal, tar sands, oil shales, etc. Smith (Mineral Bioprocessing Conference) presented a review of research efforts as well as practical applications of biotechnology in the mineral industry. In another article, Smith et al. (Minerals Engineering) emphasized that extensive fundamentals and applied research work should be pursued to explore the fundamentals, potential and practicality of the various possible uses of microorganisms in mineral engineering.

Increasing depth in vertical mine shafts penalises conventional hoists in at least four distinct ways: rope weight becomes limiting; travel time increases; the obstruction of ventilation becomes more serious; and with friction drives, rope wear due to torque is aggravated. Travel speed is limited by instability of poorly sprung conveyances on inaccurately aligned flexible rails, and also by the cost of installed power to meet an inherently peaky demand. These problems call for a review of existing designs, firstly in respect of the furniture (Buntons and guides) obstructing the air flow, and secondly in regard to the hoist running in the shaft.

One might ask why someone like myself, involved in the determination of taxes, should be speaking at a "cost engineering" session of a national engineering society. While it is true that taxes, especially income taxes, whether they be federal, state, or local, are not usually thought of as a "cost" of doing business, it is equally true that these tax costs do reduce the distributable profits just as much, as the cost of power, supplies, or labor. Therefore, the consideration given to taxes is often as important as that given to other costs. Hopefully yea will recognize that, within certain limits, taxes can be controlled to an economic advantage. That question may then lead to another question: What does the amount of taxes have to do with me? I'm an engineer or manager; not an accountant or a lawyer. If I may take a few minutes of your time, I might be able to present in a brief discussion some interesting facts that will provide the answers to those questions. My discussion will be directed mainly to Federal taxes. However, much of it will be applicable to state and local taxes, also.

Copper, particularly the oxygen-free grade Cu-OFP, is a candidate material for containers for the long-term isolation and disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in underground repositories. After having been buried for a few hundred years, all oxygen will have been consumed in the repository, and corrosion of the copper will be caused entirely by contact with dissolved sulfides. Chloride is another potential corrodant, but in deep repositories where groundwater is neutral or slightly alkaline, the effect of chlorides can be ignored on thermodynamic grounds. Thus, the corrosion of copper in the presence of sulfide ion and under reducing conditions has been studied using cyclic voltammetry and Tafel slope measurements. It is possible to determine the effect of sulphide ion on copper corrosion resistance which is minimized at low temperature and also at low sulphide concentration. The presence of anions such as HCO3 under environmental conditions produces a beneficial effect because these ions are inhibitors.

Failed attempts at amalgamation of a gold/osmiridium concentrate, recovered behind pebble mill liners during re-lining, led to the discovery that the gold particles were coated and that nitric acid only could remove the coatings. Following this treatment amalgamation was rapid and resulted in a complete recovery of the gold that otherwise would have been lost in plant residues. Investigations into the nature and formation of the coatings led to the realization that the coatings were impregnations of harder elements, associated with the gold during grinding and driven into the softer gold surface by high pressure, impact and attrition. It was further realized that this phenomenon could be part of gold ore milling, world-wide. With these thoughts in mind the question is asked whether concentration down to micron sizes prior to cyanidation, should not play a greater role in gold recovery.

Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

The coal-bearing strata of Oklahoma occur in the eastern part of the state over an area of 14,500 square miles, 20.7 percent of the state's total area. Commercially valuable deposits of bituminous coal cover about 8,000 square miles in seams ranging from ten inches to five feet thick. Estimated reserves in Oklahoma are 1.6 billion tons, representing 0.3 percent of U.S. coal reserves. The vast majority of coal mined in Oklahoma used in a single power plant within the state. Oklahoma gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 19, 1981. Authority for the state to administer the Abandoned Mine Land program was granted January21,1982. On April 30,1984, the Office of Surface Mining substituted direct federal enforcement of the inspection and enforcement portions of the Oklahoma program. This substituted enforcement was based upon a finding by OSM that Oklahoma had not operated the inspection and enforcement portions of its program effectively. As of January 1, 1986, Oklahoma inspection and enforcement authority was reinstated. Full program authority was granted to Oklahoma on January 14, 1986.

"THE LEAD-ZINC and tungsten mines of Canadian Exploration Ltd are on Iron Mountain, 8 miles south of Salmo, B.C., in the Nelson mining division. Relative location of the mines is shown on the general plan.First recorded lead production was in 1908 from surface outcrops. Small amounts of high lead ore were mined intermittently until 1926. No major lead-zinc production occurred until 1949 when outcroppings on the south side of the mountain were mined and diamond drilling began to prove the existence of a large replacement orebody. Lead-zinc ore has been mined continuously from the Jersey orebodies since March 1949, with monthly tonnage as high as 50,000 tons per month, but currently averaging 30,000 tons per month.Schee1ite-bearing tungsten ore was found in 1942 by H. Lakes in an old adit and open cuts at the north end of the Emerald tungsten orebody. The Emerald tungsten mine was developed by the Federal Government as a Wartime Metals project and operated for eight weeks in the fall of 1943, when the poor demand for tungsten closed the mine. Canadian Exploration Ltd. purchased the mine in 1947 and mined in excess of 100,000 tons in 1947-48 until the demand for tungsten dropped again and interest was centred on lead-zinc. The Federal Government repurchased and reopened the Emerald Mine in 195 L and built a new concentrator. The mine and mill were sold back to Canadian Exploration Ltd. in 1952.Regional Geology and IntrusivesThe host rock for both the lead-zinc and tungsten mineralization is the Laib formation of Lower Cambrian age, which consists of 400 feet of crystalline limestone underlain by beds of argillite, and argillaceous limestone locally altered to ""skarn"" or ""tactite"". The Laib limestone is overlain by black argillite and underlain by the Reno quartzite of Pre- cambrian age. Repetition of folded beds has allowed the interpretation of the large isoclinal fold which repeats the limestone (see general cross-section). Dolomitization and the associated lead-zinc ore have been found only in the right-side-up limestone and are not known in the overturned limestone.Two elongated stocks of granite cut the sediments. The Emerald stock outcrops along the east side of the Emerald tungsten mine and again west of the Jersey workings, while the Dodger stock outcrops only at the north end of the Iron Mountain. The shape and attitude of these bodies are believed to have been governed partly by pre-granite faulting and partly by pre-granite folding of the sediments. Although some forceful intrusion may have occurred the detailed granite surface indicates a gentle stoping emplacement."

Between 1860 and 1890 -- from the time of the American Civil War to the last decade of the 19th Century -- nickel production in North America was dominated (even monopolized) by the output of the industrial complex of the Gap Nickel Mine near Lancaster, Pennsylvania and the American Nickel Works in Camden, New Jersey. In some years, from one sixth to one third of the world's metallic nickel supply came from this enterprise. Mining and smelting were conducted at Lancaster; a matte of high iron content was shipped to Camden for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical refining to produce nickel metal, copper sulfate, and cobalt oxide. The high purity nickel product was rolled into sheet for marketing, primarily for coinage, as nickel had few other uses at that time. The undertaking experienced all of the problems that face the mining and metallurgical industries of today: declining reserves, high labor and fuel costs, high transportation costs, fluctuating demand and prices, pollution concerns, and foreign competition. The technical features of the geology; the mining, smelting, and refining operations; and some of the economic aspects are assessed. The view is taken from that of the present time -- seeking those lessons from history that we are supposed to learn or face the prospect of repeating the mistakes of the past.

Over the past three decades, mining operations have seen a significant increase in the use of contractors for mining, camp management and catering, recruitment, maintenance, power management, and commissioning. More recently contractors have been engaged for stores and logistics, OH&S, environmental, exploration, training etc. In some countries, such as South Africa, the trend is towards total outsourcing of all aspects of a mining operation which is coordinated by the owners’ management team.During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) more Australian companies considered and/or took on this approach to recruiting for both projects and operations as mining companies were forced to rethink their corporate strategies as commodity prices plummeted to low levels, pushing operations and projects into potentially financially unviable territory.This paper discusses the labour recruitment, commissioning and operating strategy of Western Areas NL (WSA), with the assistance of Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd (IMO), as it progressed construction, commissioning and operation of the Cosmic Boy nickel concentrator at the Forrestania Nickel Project during and post GFC. The use of IMO contractors allowed Western Areas to mitigate labour cost risk during the uncertainty caused by the GFC and let their management team focus on the task of bringing a new operation into viable and profitable production.
