THE different influences exerted by the various alloying elements in iron and iron-carbon alloys give rise to a great number of complexities, which are difficult to grasp. It is important therefore to study any sys-tematic relations that may exist between the effects exerted by the various alloying elements, in order to obtain a general classification and thus a clearer conception of the nature of alloy steels. A systematic survey of the alloys of iron, based on an investigation of the binary equilibrium diagrams, was recently published by Wever. Although his work deals little with properties of importance in works practice, its purpose being rather to point out the theoretical agreement among the types of binary equilibrium diagrams and the position of the alloying elements in the periodic system (atomic radii, etc.), the classifica-tion proposed nevertheless also suggests relationships among the proper-ties of the alloys in question, even though the alloys may contain carbon in addition to iron and the alloying element. Wever divided the alloys of iron into one group exhibiting an open or enlarged gamma field and another exhibiting a closed or restricted gamma field, with both groups capable of further subdivision depending upon whether a continuous series of solid solutions is formed, or, owing to the separation of compounds, etc., only a limited series. Thus all alloying elements which with iron form a closed gamma field, a "gamma loop," produce alloys that beyond the composition correspond-ing to the greatest extent of the gamma loop are composed of ferrite alone at all temperatures. Alloys of this composition accordingly are not susceptible to ordinary heat treatment because of the lack of tran-formations. The diffusion of carbon in Co-5% Fe alloy was studied in a belt-type pressure system at temperatures of up to 1330°C and press loads or nominal pressures of 7 020 tons or 42±3 kbar. Under these conditions, this alloy is in the solid state. Discs of graphite and prealloyed Co-5%Fe were used to make up the diffusion couple. The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing press load due to the tendency of the low density graphite to dissolve in the metallic phase reducing the overall volume and increasing the density of the system. Furthermore, inhomogeneous plastic deformation may have promoted diffusion by creating defects in the alloy. Diffusion couples treated at atmospheric pressure exhibited graphite particles in the metal, while those treated at high pressures exhibited carbide in the form of Widmanstatten laths. Carbon analyses indicated increased carbon solubility with increasing pressure. This was confirmed from calculated high-pressure phase diagrams.

Mercury-cell chlor-alkali production plants generate mercury contaminated wastewater streams from which mercury must be precipitated and filtered, resulting in a sludge containing 2% mercury (designated KI06) that cannot be landfilled in the United States without treatment. REMERC is a chemical treatment process used to recover 99% of the mercury from wastewater sludge generated at these plants. The process uses leaching to oxidize mercury compounds to mercuric chloride, washing and filtration to separate mercuric chloride from the treated sludge, and cementation to reduce the mercuric chloride to metallic mercury. Mercury not recovered in cementation is recycled to the wastewater process for precipitation and filtration. Treated sludge contains less than 260 ppm total mercury and 0.2 ppm TCLP, meeting the USEPA low mercury subcategory specifications that allow landfill disposal. REMERC uses readily available chemicals, is straightforward to control and inexpensive to operate, has no mercury emissions to air, and recovers metallic mercury. REMERC enabled significant cost savings including lower solids disposal costs, recovery and reuse of metallic mercury in the chlor-alkali process, and ability to treat non-wastewater sludge. No new EPA permits were required. REMERC was shown to be a viable process for recovery of metallic mercury from K106 designated sludge.

The roles of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in smog formation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Samples of automobile exhaust with varying HC and NOx levels were irradiated in a smog chamber under conditions that resulted in smog levels similar to those observed in the atmosphere. Results were used to define the patterns that describe the dependence of a number of smog manifestations on HC and on NOx. Using these dependence data and some simplifying assumptions, estimates were made of the ranges within which HC and NOx must lie in order to obtain specified levels of air quality.

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributable to accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notes to the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

In this study, we develop a detailed model of the likely future carbon footprint of primary copper supply. We develop a peak copper production model, based on a detailed copper resource data set, and combine this with a comprehensive life cycle assessment model of copper mining and milling to predict greenhouse gas emission rates and intensities of Australian and global copper production up to 2100. By establishing a quantitative prediction of both copper production and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions of Australian and global copper industry, we then analysed the emissions intensity of various energy input scenarios, such as business-as-usual, solar thermal electricity and solar thermal electricity with biodiesel. The Australian Government has an aspirational goal for long-term greenhouse gas emissions of an 80% reduction from the 2000 level by 2050. For the copper sector, this means moving from about 12.6 Mt CO2e in 2000 to a goal of some 2.52 Mt CO2e in 2050 (assuming equal emissions reductions across the economy). Based on the energy sources modelled, only the solar thermal plus biodiesel scenario was capable of achieving this goal at about 0.15 Mt CO2e, since the solar thermal alone scenario still includes normal petro-diesel as a major source of emissions. Overall, it is clear that there are abundant resources which can meet expected long-term copper demands, the critical issue is more the carbon (and environmental) footprint of different copper supplies and use rather than how much is available for mining. It is clear that the switch to renewable energy can have a profound impact on the carbon intensity of copper supply, even allowing for increased energy intensity as ore grades decline, and a complete conversion to renewable energy will position the copper sector to meet existing annual greenhouse gas emissions targets and goals.

"The in vivo toxicity of vanadium(V) has been found to correlate with the depletion of cellular glutathione and related non-protein thiols. With a view to understanding the mechanism for this observation, we have investigated the oxidation of glutathione, cysteine N·acetylcystcinc and pcnicil· lamine by vanadium(V), using electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology. The spin trap used was 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline I-oxide (DMPO). It is found that the oxidation of these thiols by vanadium(V) generates the corresponding thiyl radicals and vanadilim- (IV) complexes. The results suggest that free radical reactions play a significant role in the depletion of cellular thiols by vanadium(V) and hence in vanadium(V) toxicity. 1. INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports on the identification of thiyl radicals formed as intermediates in the reaction of vanadium(V) with glutathione (GSH) and related nonprotein thiols. This study was undertaken because the biochemical mechanism of vanadium toxicity is still not fully understood,. despite being a topic of current research activity [1-20). As to possible clues, it is known that vanadium is most toxic when administered in its pentavaient state [21), and that vanadium(V) administration into laboratory mice reduces cellular levels of NAD(P)H and GSH [22). While the oxidation of NAD(P)H by vanadium has been studied extensively [16-20), that of glutathione and related non-protein thiols has been paid less attention. On the other hand, GSH and related thiols are important cellular antioxidants [23). Their functions include decomposing lipid peroxides and protecting cell membranes [23-25). Thus any reduction in the cellular contents of such nonprotein thiols after vanadium exposure may result in the accumulation of lipid peroxides which might ultimately lead to tissue injury. With a view of finding the mechanism for this thiol depletion process, we have investigated reactions of non-protein thiols with vanadium(V). Particular attention has been paid to the detection of thiyl radicals, since it has been postulated [l] (but not experimentally proven) that the glutathionyl radical (GS·) might be an intermediate in the reaction between vanadium(V), NADH and GSH. We have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology for investigating the reactions of GSH, cysteine, N-acetylcysteine and penicillamine with vanadium(V). The results show that the corresponding thiyl radicals are indeed formed in the one-electron reduction of vanadium(V) by all of the above mentioned thiols."

Blasting is a commonly utilized method in civil engineering projects and mining operations. Ammonium nitrate-based (AN-based) explosives are the most efficient explosives today in terms of handling and performance. However, a side effect is the production of gases. The reduction of these gases plays an important role in the safety and environmental aspects in the working place. Therefore, optimizing the recipes of explosives is vital for minimizing the environmental impact and increasing performance. The aim of the project is to provide results and recommendations on the use of emulsion commercial explosives to support the Swedish mining industry and tunnel-contractors as well as the explosives manufactures. The approach was to test various recipes of civil emulsion explosives to investigate the generation of toxic fumes (CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and NOx) during their detonation. To further increase the knowledge of the influence of different additives, ammonium nitrate prills were added in various percentages. The experimental configuration consisted of magnetite mortar cylindrical specimens with a 50 mm borehole at their center, filled with emulsion explosive. Several tests with different emulsion compositions regarding ammonium nitrate additives (10%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35%) were carried out in a blasting chamber. The measurement equipment was composed of a flue gas analyzer. The instrument was meticulously cleaned after every test, as well as before and during the tests due to condensation (high humidity and dust) at the inlet of the instrument. The emulsion was manually sensitized with microballons and pumped into the cylinders to ensure lack of bubbles, which could introduce inhomogeneities. The acquired gas concentration data was complemented with temperature, humidity, and VoD measurements. The results showed a linear increase of nitrogen gases as the percentage of ammonium nitrate prills increased. On the other hand, carbon gases had a relatively low coefficient of determination. The VoD data showed a behavior that can be described with a simple quadratic equation.

Deformation lines, also called etch markings or strain markings, are non-effaceable lines developed in individual grains by etching a metal specimen which has been cold worked sufficiently to cause atomic non-conformity or slight orientation differences within the grains. Etching occurs more rapidly at these lines of high chemical reactivity to produce a result similar to that revealing grain boundaries. Wider etching effects forming bands have been found. They are believed to be bands of deformation lines which form areas of measurably different orientation from the crystal matrix. The crystallite rotations causing these bands have been shown by Barrett2 to contribute to deformation textures. Although deformation lines have been observed in many metals, the amount of deformation requireti for their appearance has been established only in general terms. Mathewson and Phillips3 observed the first appearance of deformation lines in cold-rolled alpha brass at about 20 pct reduction in thickness using the standard ammonium hydroxide hydrogen peroxide etchant. Price and Davidson4 noted defor- mation lines in common high brass after 26.5 pct reduction by cold rolling using the same etchant. Johnson6 observed dark thick forklike lines in 99.99 pct pure copper reduced 31.8 pct. Adcock6 observed deformation lines in 80-20 copper-nickel alloy rolled 50 pct. Samans7 found no deformation lines in alpha brass single crystals cold rolled 9.5 pct but they did appear after 25 pct reduction using ammonium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide etchant. Barrett and Levenson8 observed deformation bands in drawn polycrystalline iron at very small reductions in area and noted that their initial appearance perhaps depends on grain size and other conditions. They reported deformation bands in a single crystal of iron reduced 6 pct by drawing. Brickg noted that deformation lines in 70-30 brass apparently associated with I I I I ) planes appeared after reductions of from 20-50 pct by cold rolling. Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million ton'> of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization -"scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who burn coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. The objective of the project was to optimize the ventilation parameters of a continuous miner underboom scrubber to further control. the amount of airborne dust discharged during mining, to further reduce the exposure of face personnel for an exhaust brattice ventilation system, and avoid recirculation of contaminants at the face. This research was performed in an underground coal mine in Utah. The tasks included preliminary face ventilation evaluation and optimization of the scrubber system to eliminate recirculation of the scrubber discharge air. Airflow tests were conducted on the currently used dust control system and the modified scrubber system. Tracer gas tests were performed to evaluate face ventilation effectiveness. Confirmatory tests of the scrubber system under actual operating conditions, modifications to the scrubber system, and a comparative evaluation of the scrubber system vs. the existing system were performed. This paper presents the results of the airflow pattern tests and the respirable dust levels in the modified scrubber system and the existing system. The optimized face ventilation parameters and the developed operating guidelines may provide the benefits of dust reduction, better face ventilation, and improved visibility.

In the United States in 1961 rock falls killed 167 miners, crippled many more, and cost the industry a fortune in lost equipment and production. Much research has been carried on to try to find ways to eliminate this loss of life and property. Within the past few years the interest in rock mechanics as a science has been at its highest point, Private industry, government agencies, universities and foundations have launched studies to gain a better basic understanding of the stability of underground openings.

Mineral processing plants require a storage buffer to bridge differences in production rates between mining and processing. Where coarse ores are processed, such as coal or hard rock, this buffer may be an ore stockpile or silo. For wet-mining processes, eg dredging or hydraulic mining, or where fine ores are slurried close to the mining face, a surge-bin is used to contain the plant feed and smooth out the variations in mining rates. These bins have gradually evolved from simple storage vessels to units that are now frequently part of the mineral separation process itself, such as providing a desliming function to remove deleterious ultrafine gangue. This feed conditioning is often essential to achieve the levels of plant performance required in times of declining ore grades and or where inherent ore characteristics make separations harder to achieve. To achieve these dual roles requires careful consideration of bin design factors such as geometry and lining selection and increased use of instrumentation and advanced, or remotely supervised, control systems. All this ensures they provide capacity to smooth out variations in mining rates and guarantees that when conditioning ores or adjusting slurry densities ahead of the plant it is achieved without loss of valuable minerals. This paper examines the evolution of the modern surge-bin from a simple, so called, constant density tank with its inherent mass-flow compromises, limited feed preparation and beneficiation abilities, and footprint penalty, to a current state-of-the-art surge-bin, the LFCU, with a control system which provides demonstrable steady outputs, while conditioning and in some cases beneficiating the ROM material and all from a highly compact unit. It further discusses their use in other applications around the world, for example providing the necessary security for long distant high-density pumping systems; constant high density, low water usage, tailings disposal pipelines and high capacity ultrafine iron ore beneficiation.

With the depletion of high-grade iron ore resources, the utilization of existing low-grade iron ores, fines and tailings with effective beneficiation is inevitable to meet the iron and steel industry’s required specifications and demand. JSW Steel Limited is operating a 17-mtpa beneficiation plant at its Vijayanagar site in Bellary in Karnataka, which produces nearly 50 to 54 percent concentrate as sinter-grade fines. The sinter base mix consists of iron ore fines that are smaller than 10 mm, with 41 percent smaller than 0.150 mm; washed ore that is generally smaller than 3 mm and bigger than 0.150 mm, with 3 to 9 percent smaller than 0.150 mm; beneficiation plant concentrate, with 97 percent smaller than 0.150 mm; limestone; dolomite; coke breeze; lime; sinter return fines; direct reduced iron (DRI) fines; and micropellets produced from steel plant waste. Using more washed ore in the sinter base mix affects the sinter quality. Ball formation in the mixing and nodulizing drum is an important step in sinter making and requires sufficient quantity of smaller than 0.150 mm fines. Optimization of fines in the sinter base was carried out by replacing the smaller than 10 mm iron ore fines with washed ore. Size analysis, study of the granulation index (G index) and optimization of moisture with respect to sinter bed permeability were carried out to optimize the proportion of smaller than 0.150 mm fines in the sinter base mix as adhering material. This study explores the optimization of fines in the sinter base mix for ball formation to achieve higher sinter quality and productivity with higher sinter bed permeability.

"In the course of the extension of the railway network in Israel, currently the two 4.6 km long tubes of the Gilon Tunnels on the line from Akko to Carmiel are being constructed. The tunnels run through the limestones of the Bina- and Yirka-formations, which locally are karstified. The maximum overburden amounts to 160 m.The limestones are mostly horizontally bedded and vertically jointed. Occasionally also inclined joints exist. The tunnels cross various fault zones, which mostly strike at an acute angle to the tunnel axis and are steeply inclined. The karstic cavities which were encountered during tunneling have partially been filled by clay. In the vicinity of the fault zones, the rock has often been strongly jointed and weathered respectively. The two single-track tubes have a cross section with vertical walls and an open invert. The tubes are connected by cross cuts with a spacing of approx. 250 m.During the tender phase, WBI has elaborated the tender design for a joint venture of a Chinese and an Israeli construction company. After the joint venture had been awarded the contract, the preliminary and the detailed design have been elaborated by WBI and the construction works have been guided. On the basis of the geological description, rock mechanical models have been elaborated, followed by stability analyses on the basis of the Finite Element method. The tunnels have been excavated according to the shotcrete method. The support in most areas only consisted of a very thin shotcrete lining and radial bolts in the area of the roof. Depending on the degree of jointing and weathering, locally advancing support by means of spiles has been applied.The internal lining of reinforced concrete has been constructed in parallel to the heading of the tubes. Mucking and delivery of materials was carried out through the cross cuts.The breakthrough was achieved in April 2014 and thus within schedule. The predicted distribution of the excavation and support classes along the tunnel has been in good agreement with reality."

One of the valuation approaches applied to Advanced Exploration Areas and Pre-Development Projects is the so-called ?in situ Mineralization Method? or the ?Yardstick Method?. This method is based on the concept of a known undeveloped Mineral Resource being worth a certain fraction (the ?Yardstick?) of the contained commodity value (?metal in ground?), using commodity prices ruling at the date of valuation. The Yardstick value is derived usually from an average market-based figure obtained from an analysis of recent transactions and is expressed as a monetary value per ounce or per tonne. It maybe modified to accommodate the quality (e.g. grade) and category (e.g. confidence level) of the Mineral Resource/Reserve involved and the time, effort and expenditure expected to be involved in bringing the project to fruition. Some eighteen recent and relevant transactions were analysed, allowing the following general conclusions to be reached: ? a Yardstick with which to value undeveloped PGE mineral resources is likely to range between 0.5% and 2.5% of the in-ground contained metal value ? the expected method of mining (especially with regard to mining costs) and the grade of the mineralization both have a strong influence on the Yardstick ? the status (classification) of the Mineral Resource has some influence on the Yardstick and ? the ruling price of platinum and the regional location of the deposit appear to have insignificant influences on the Yardstick.
