IN comparing the living conditions of the worker or peasant of the past with those existing today, his-torians might point out many strange contrasts. From the Doomsday Book we learn that at the time of Wil-liam the Conqueror the 1,375,000 inhabitants of Eng-land and Wales owned less than 1000 horses and 5000 oxen. Even as recently as 1871 when England and Wales had a population of 31,845.000, the total number of horses in the country was estimated at 1,110,000. Compare the necessary drudgery of labor in those days with conditions in Canada today where a population of less than ten million people own 3,500,000 horses. Re-member that there is also a turbine installation in` this country of more than four million horse-power, besides steam boilers and locomotive and automobile engines which reduce the traction and hand labor of the farm and factory. Frequently, poetic license has glossed over the poverty and hardship of the common people in the "good old days," and the imagination has created an idyllic world, far from being justified by the condi-tions which actually prevailed. Simon Patten's de-scription of the Middle Ages as "A Thousand Years Without an Ice Box" came nearer portraying the true situation. No one is likely to forget that the discovery of America was an incident in Europe's attempt to find a short route to the Indies, but the fact is usually for-gotten that the summer diet in Europe in 1400-an ice-less age-was such that spices were more precious than gold. Though the glamor of the Indies may never sur-round the modern refrigerator, certainly the modern housewife is likely 'to feel that the applied art called "cookery? may attain to higher levels with the assist-ance-6f such an adjunct. Those who have spoken slightingly of the uniformity of the modern apartment and have eulogized some of the exceptional hand-made furniture which has been bequeathed by former generations, have failed to com-pare modern house furnishings with those in the typical peasant's hovel. Machine-made furniture, though with-out particularly good lines, contrasts quite favorably with the pile of rags in the corner, and the poorest gas or oil stove is better than an open fire on a dirt floor. The scientist's application of the theories of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics .to practical prob-lems has brought about a series of kaleidoscopic trans-formations in agriculture, industry and commerce. Large scale production, improved means of communica-tion and the prevailing higher standard of living are terms which imply a very human meaning when in-terpreted as actual changes in individual living. Though the student and the teacher may deprecate the influence of commercialism upon science, humanity as a whole has received great benefits from the close relationship which has developed between science and industry, and industry in turn has done much for science through the building and endowment of laboratories and by supply-ing funds to maintain research workers.

The 3 Right pre-developed longwall recovery entry at Signal Peak Energy?s Bull Mountain No. 1 mine was designed to prevent the abnormal roof conditions encountered in its firsttwo recovery entries. Unique geological conditions, such as the low overburden of approximately 200 feet and prevalence of roof joints in the sandstone overburden, contribute significantly to abnormal conditions during longwall recovery. The 3 Right recovery entry was 42 ft wide and developed in two stages, 21 ft wide in each stage. The entry roof was reinforced with steel wire mesh/non-metallic recovery mesh, high-capacity primary bolts and cables. After all the support was installed, the entry was completely backfilled with specially designed, cuttable, low-density cement. The roof bolting and backfilldesign were based on current practices in this mine and successful practices in other mines in the U.S. and Australia. Extensive instrumentation was installed in the recovery entry for continuous monitoring of load transfer as the face approached and cut into the recovery entries. The support design was completely successful with a smooth cut-through on January 29 and 30, 2014, significantly reducing the shield recovery time and meanwhile protecting the safety of miners. Based on actual observance and practices of the 3 Right recovery entry, recommendations on improvement and modificationsof roof support for 4 Right recovery room are presented.

The Magdalen Islands archipelago, a cluster of fifteen islands, is located near the centre of the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the thickest portion of the Carboniferous Fundy Basin of the Maritime Pro vinces. The bedrock of the Magdalen Platform includes a thick succession of evaporites of Visean Age, occurring as a series of thickenings, ridges, domes and diapirs reaching a probable vertical thickness of close to 6000 m. The emplacement of 1hese salt structures by flowage has much dislurbed 1he SlrOligraphic sequence of the rocks of the Windsor Group, particularly 1he Havre-aux-Maisons Formation. Subsequent tectonic movemenl has broken the overlying Cap-auxMeules Forma1ion info an assemblage of panels and blocks now slightly tilted. Following detailed gravimetric surveys and more than 30,000 m of diamond drilling, SOQUEM has discovered, at various dep1hs, seven salt domes on four of 1he main islands of the archipelago. These evaporite bodies generally are localized near the cemre of complex anticlinal struclUres where diapiric movements and faulting have disturbed the original stratigraphic succession. At Rocher du Dauphin near Grosse 1/e, in 1he northern part of the archipelago, Seleine a SOQUEM subsidiary is developing a mining complex with an annual capaci1y of 1,250,000 1onnes of deicing salt for 1he Canadian and Eas1ern United Swtes marke1s. The stan of operations is scheduled for April 1982.

I n the simplest application of a shock tube initiation system, the tubing acts as a “relay line” which passes a detonation signal from borehole to borehole. When the signal arrives at each borehole, it causes the detonator attached to it to fire. Such a single path constitutes a progressive series where each unit must function properly in order to activate the following units. Any application error, malfunction, or mistake in connecting any surface unit will stop the progression of the detonation signal through the system and result in a “cutoff” or misfire of the following charges.

Design and development of the world?s largest flotation cell was completed in 2002. This was the first 257 m3 flotation cell installed in the mineral industry and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells. This cell has a 50% increase in volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO® Smartcell? flotation machine. In the next few years it is anticipated that 257 m3 flotation cells will be incorporated into rougher-scavenger flotation circuits in many more world class copper sulphide concentrators. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No.250 Smartcell? flotation machine was installed at Minera Los Pelambres in the front of Row 1 in the existing rougher flotation circuit. This cell is followed by nine No. 130 Smartcell? flotation cells. After the successful development phase, this unit has been incorporated as part of a row of No. 250 Smartcell? flotation machines at Minera Los Pelambres. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No. 250 flotation cell, and present a case study of the in-plant equipment testing. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulphide concentrator.

Drilling progress is often delayed by sticking of the drill string. The development of preventive and remedial methods has been hampered by incomplete understanding of the sticking mechanism. A recent lahorntory investigation hns indicated that one type of sticking may be attributed to the difference in pressure between the borehole and formation. This paper shows, by means of soil mechanics, that the primary cause for differential pressure sticking is cessation of pipe movement, whereas diflerential pressre and stanrtding time determine the severity of the sticking. The analysis stresses the importance of using low-weight muds with low solids content and low water loss to alleviate diflerential pressure sticking and describes why packed hole drilling, long strings of drill collars, and a large deviation from the vertical are conducive to sticking. Finally, preventrve and remedial methods ore evaluated, and a theory is presented on the release of stuck pipe by spotting oil. INTRODUCTION Since drilling with long strings of oversize drill collars has become standard practice in many areas, the incidence and severity of the stuck pipe problem has increased. It has been noticed that in the majority of these cases the sticking could not possibly be attributed to key seating or caving of shales. It appeared that, due to the differential pressure between the mud column and the formation fluid, the collars were pressed into the wall and so became "wall stuck". Points to note about differential pressure sticking are: (1) sticking is restricted to the drill collars, (2) the collars become stuck opposite a permeable formation, (3) the sticking occurs after an interruption of pipe movement, (4) circulation, if interrupted, can be restarted after the sticking is noticed, and (5) no large amounts of cuttings are circulated out after restarting circulation. Helmick and Longleyl investigated pipe sticking by differential pressure in the laboratory and found an empirical relationship between the differential pressure, the sticking time and the required pull-out force. In this paper an explanation of the mechanism is given based on Terzaghi's theory of clay consolidation. A qualitative description is given in the following paragraphs while the derivation of fonnulas is given in Appendices. This paper is a first attempt to explain pressure differential sticking and many points will require additional theoretical and practical investigation before the problem can be fully understood. PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL STICKING AS A CONSOLIDATION PROBLEM In any borehole, where the mud pressure is higher than that exerted by the formation fluids, a mud cake is formed opposite the permeable sections of the hole and a continuous flow of filtrate takes place from the mud, through the cake and into the formation. This radial flow pattern requires a certain distribution of the hydraulic and the effective (grain-to-grain) stresses inside the mud cake. Any quantitative or qualitative change in the external pressure conditions will produce a change in the flow pattern and, consequently, also in the internal stress distribution inside the cake. In view of the low permeability and the high compressibility of a clay mud cake, the adjustment of the internal stress distribution is slow and is accompanied by a change in volume. Time dependent stresses are thus created which gradually diminish as the new state of equilibrium between internal and external pressures is approached. Some 30 years ago, Terzaghi developed his "Theory of Consolidation" to account for the time-dependent stresses and settling of clay formations under the influence of external loads. He derived a differential equation by which the time-dependent hydraulic stress and the consolidation can be computed for any point inside the layer during the consolidation process. His theory is based on the assumption that the change in stress is solely due to a change in water content and it may only be applied to one-dimensional consolidation phenomena. Other investiga-tors5,10 have expanded his theory to include processes of more than one dimension. The difference between the external pressures on the mud cake before and after sticking is a qualitative one (isolation of part of the cake by the static contact with the drill collars after pipe movement has been stopped)', and the time-dependent stresses thus created may be investigated by means of Terzaghi's theory. By this analysis the changes in the nature of the contact surface between the drill collars and the mud cake during the sticking can be explained; and the friction force between the two may be computed as a function of the sticking time, the borehole dimensions and the mud cake characteristics.

The Al-1.0 pct Mg alloy 565 7 was studied using optical microscopy and electron microprobe X-ray analysis. Constituent particles were found to exist inter-dendritically in the as-cast material in a region of precipitate free a -aluminum. Five phases besides a fine precipitate and a-Al were identified in the cast structure: Fel3, Fe2Al7, Mg2Al3, CUMgAl2, and Cu2FeAl7. Thermal treatments conducted for 100 hr at 1180°, 1130°, 1080°, 1030°, 980°, and 880° F revealed a general dissolution and spheroidization of the in-terdendritic constituent network observed in the cast structure. The principal constituents present in the thermally treated structures were FeAl3 and Fe2Al7 with the relative amount of Fe2A17 to FeAl3 increasing with a decrease in the treatment temperature. The phases Present in the wrought structure were identical to those observed after the thermal treatments, with the constituent particles strung out in the direction of rolling. ALLOY 5657 is a nonheat-treatable commercial purity Al-1.0 pct Mg alloy utilized extensively because of its bright finishing characteristics. This investigation was conducted to determine the constituents present in 5657 alloy, and to study the effect of extended thermal treatments on morphology. Numerous studies have been carried out to establish the equilibrium diagrams for various aluminum systems,1-3 with phase identification based on X-ray analysis, morphology, and the etching response of relatively large particles. Phragmen4 conducted a study of the phases in aluminum eutectic systems and compiled a "corrected" table of etching responses, drawing on his work plus that of Schrader,5 Keller and Wilcox,6 and Mondolfo.7 A review of the original work of Keller and Wilcox, and Mondolfo, which was concerned with the constituents found in commercial alloys, reveals that in numerous cases their etching responses differ from those reported by Phragmen and from each other. These inconsistencies may occur because a specific constituent will react to a given etch in a varying manner depending upon its size, the elements dissolved in the phase, the other constituents surrounding a phase, and the solute content of the matrix. Work with a commercial orientation was conducted on alloys 2024 and 3003 by Sperry8,9 and on alloy 3003 by Barker,10 where the relationship between the phase diagram and the nonequilibrium structure of an alloy was examined. Backerud11 investigated the A1-Fe binary system and found that at high cooling rates the equilibrium eutectic reaction forming a-A1 and FeA13 is replaced by another lower temperature eutectic reaction forming a-A1 and metastable FeAl6, a constituent first identified by Hollingsworth et al.12 Most of the above mentioned studies were conducted on materials having a significantly greater alloy content than 5657 alloy, where the relatively small size and sparse distribution of second phase particles hinders the process of identifying constituents. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material with a composition as given in Table I was examined in the as-direct chill cast, hot rolled and cold rolled conditions, and after thermal treatment of the cast structure. Thermal treatments were terminated by a water quench. Microscopic examination was conducted under various lighting conditions following the application of standard etchants as specified in Table 11. A semi-quantitative electron microprobe X-ray analysis was conducted for Al, Mg, Fe, Cu, Si, Zn, and Ti. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Microstructure of the As-Cast Material. Particles of second phase material were found to exist inter-dendritically, principally in regions of precipitate free a-Al, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Adjacent to the ingot edge was a region of inverse segregation, resulting in an increased amount of second phase material containing large sized particles which aided in phase identification. Phase Identification. Cast Structure. Five phases besides a-Al and a fine precipitate were identified using optical microscopy and electron microprobe X-ray analysis, as presented in Tables II and III, respectively. FeA13 and Fe2A17 are often found with Fe2A17 forming a sheath around the core of FeAl3, resulting from an incomplete peritectoid reaction. These phases have a nearly identical appearance under white light, although they are easily differentiated under crossed polarizers, as characteristically illustrated in Figs. 2(a) and 2(b), respectively. During the 9 years ended December 31, 1938, 188 fatalities resulted from preventable accidents in and around the coal mines of Indiana; 173 of these occurred at underground mines and 15 at stripping or open-cut operations. In addition, there may have been other unrecorded fatalities during this period. The two organizations receiving notice of accidental deaths at coal mines in this State are the Division of Mines and Mining and the Indiana Industrial Commission. Only deaths occurring at underground mines employing 10 or more men are reported to the former, as neither strip mines nor underground mines employing fewer than 10 men cone within the purview of the Indiana mining law. The mine inspectors have no Jurisdiction over this latter group of mines and do not inspect them. Fatalities at small "wagon" mines and open-cut operations are supposed to be reported to the Industrial Commission; however, in many instances deaths at small mines are not reported, the only record being a death certificate filed with the county or corporation health officer. Thus, many deaths in small mines escape attention, especially when the victim succumbs some time after the injury was received. The data presented here on fatalities in Indiana, during the past 5 years include several instances in which the only record available is a death certificate; possibly others have been overlooked. From 1934 to 1937 the fatality record was progressively worse, that of the larger underground mines in 1937 being more than twice the average for these mines for the previous 4 years and only slightly less than twice the average for all mines, including open-cut operations. The increase in deaths during 1937 was due to two explosions, with 20 fatalities in one and 2 in the other. The number of deaths in the larger underground mines was considerably less in 1938 than in the previous 4 years, but there was no improvement in the number of fatalities at the small mines, or at open-cut mines.

Fluoride ions in zinc electrolyte cause corrosion to aluminum cathode plates at zinc electrowinning process, so we have developed an iron compound as a fluoride ion adsorbent used in zinc sulfate solution. The iron compound is synthesized from FeC13 solution with a small amount of sulfate ion by neutralizing reaction with Na2CO3 solution. The fluoride ions adsorbed on the surface of the iron compound are desorbed in alkaline solution and the iron compound can be reuse as a fluoride ion adsorbent. Moreover, if adsorption capacity of the iron compound decreases, it can be dissolved in HCl solution and re-synthesized.

The straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal chemical evaporation of mixed powders of silica and graphite at 1300_ and condensation on Si substrate without assistance of any catalyst. The synthesized samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The results suggested that the straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have uniform diameter about 50-200nm and neat smooth surface. The growth of such silica nanorods may be a result of the fluctuation of external conditions and internal structure faults causing a change in the growth direction of silica nanorods developed.

This work is dedicated to the chemical treatment of a typical EAF dust by chlorine content agents. The residue contains 48% Fe2O3 and 28% ZnO mainly in the franklinite structural form. The others less compounds are: 4.00% CaO, 2.60% MnO, 2.20% MgO, 1.08% PbO, 0.36% Cr2O3, 0.21% B2O3, 0.03% CdO and 0.01% NiO. The experiments purpose is selectively to remove zinc from the residue leaving the iron behind. Thermodynamics studies have indicated some roasting possibilities. The experimental results have shown that both HCl leaching and carbochlorination will remove iron and zinc without any selectivity. However, either the chlorine or the calcium chloride roasting seems to form, preferentially, the zinc chloride. So, it will be presented how the EAF Dust can be treated by the using of chlorine roastings process such as carbochlorination in order to separate the zinc and iron present in the frankilinite, main EAF dust content.

Although Tantalum is not usually regarded as a precious metal, its pricing structure is very similar to that of Silver. Different from precious metals, Tantalum has only industrial applications and its use is about 1000 metric tons per year. The intrinsic value of Tantalum already in .the past was a driving force for its recycling. Based on these facts the Tantalum industry world-wide is approaching the closed-loop concept of its recycling. A detailed material flow of Tantalum processing as well as recovery of residues and used products will be discussed.

DURING the last several years, the U-Zr system has been studied at many laboratories as one of the research programs sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. The equilibria in part of this system have been difficult to determine, although the phase diagram from 0 to 60 atomic pct Zr has been established with reasonable certainty. Existing diagrams of the system vary appreciably beyond 60 atomic pct Zr, particularly with regard to the existence of an intermediate phase. Most existing diagrams show a transformation or reaction horizontal near 600°C. In 1955, a collection of uranium phase diagrams' was prepared at the Battelle Memorial Institute and the U-Zr diagram in that collection contained a questionable region in the vicinity of 60 to 80 atomic pct Zr. Summer-Smith" has published a phase diagram of the system that shows no intermediate phase. Summer-Smith did his work with powders and found only the uranium and zirconium eutectoid mixture from X-ray patterns of material annealed below 600°C. Mueller3 at Argonne National Laboratory did similar work with filings, and he found that initially there was a pattern of an intermediate phase, but on long-time annealing
