Kinetics studies and other rate measurements are reviewed in the amine extraction of uranium and of some other related and associated metal ions. Equilibration' is relatively fast in the uranium sulfate systems most important to uranium-hydrometallurgy. Significantly slow; equilibration-has ' been encountered' in some other systems. Most of the recorded rate information, both qualitative and quantitative; has come from exploratory and, process-development development work, while some kinetics studies have been directed specifically toward elucidation of, extraction mechanisms. In contrast to some other extraction systems, relatively little attention has been given to the kinetics of uranium extraction by amines. This is because investigators have not been troubled by slow extractions. Instead, when rate limitations have been of concern in amine extraction (Amex) process developments, they have been mainly from slow phase disengagement rather than from slow equilibration. Nevertheless, taking uranium together with several other elements that are closely related to it or associated with it in typical processes, a considerable body of rate information has been recorded.

El presente texto evalúa el relave minero de SIMSA con el objetivo de obtener un producto ecológico que pueda ser utilizado como mejorador cationico de suelos y restaure el equilibrio de los suelos ácidos de la selva peruana. Para ello, se desarrolló un trabajo a nivel de laboratorio, obteniéndose resultados satisfactorios. Posteriormente se pasó al nivel piloto donde a través de la experimentación se utilizó el relave en diferentes concentraciones para la producción agrícola y forestal, reafirmando los resultados en las mejoras de la productividad en suelos ácidos.

Silver paste including nano sized particles maintains conductivity in high temperatures without forming oxide layers. In the industry, printing process produces wasted silver paste inside the cylinder and on silk-screen. Pyrometallugical silver recycling methods have environmental problems and do not extract pure silver after removing polymer and organic materials during the extraction process. In this study a simple wet process, of recycling the waste silver paste, using ammonia, was conducted. Silver ion extraction yield was increased using oxidant in the ammonia solution. Possible extraction yields, such as pH, concentration, temperature of ammonia, oxidant concentration and the extraction time. The particles that were obtained after the extraction process will be used as porous hydrophobic catalytic and applied to AI mask and hydrophobic ink. Although the quantity of native sulphur associated with volcanism is large, production from such deposits represents only a very small percentage of total world production, This paper describes the location of the known deposits, the typical geology of these deposits and the nature of the sulphur mineralization. Methods of treatment are discussed and some comments are offered on the economic position of these occurences in world sulphur markets.

The conditions of amine concentration and pH necessary for the concentration of fine haematite particles at the iso-octane-water interface have been determined. Results obtained from the related studies on the effect of pH and dodecylamine concentration on the adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle and concentration of various amine species in the system are included. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. Maximum concentration of haematite at the oil-water interface was obtained when the haematite zeta-potential was small or equal to zero

"Industrial-grade limestone is found in both the Lower Silurian La Vieille Formation and Upper Silurian LaPlante Formation of the Chaleurs Group in northern New Brunswick. Currently, between 150 000 and 200 000 tonnes of limestone are produced per year from the proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation at the Sormany quarry of Elmtree Resources Ltd., located west of Bathurst.The proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation was deposited on the margins of tectonically uplifted Ordovician terranes. This facies comprises stromatoporoidal-algal bindstone intercalated with wackestone, packstone, and floatstone in variable proportions. The distal facies comprises calcareous shale and minor limestone deposited deeper offshore.Folding and faulting related to Middle Devonian Acadian tectonism have caused an increase in the apparent thickness of the limestone sequences, especially adjacent to the regional Rocky Brook-Millstream fault. Structural and stratigraphic observations indicate that some of the limestone bodies in the area have been tectonically displaced from their site of deposition.A variety of prospecting techniques was used to locate new limestone resources, including geological mapping, airborne and ground electromagnetic surveys, and satellite remote sensing. Clastic rock units above and below the LaPlante Formation have distinctive properties that help to trace the intervening limestone along strike. Because of water-saturated glacial cover, thick vegetation, and the small size of targets, airborne geophysical methods did not prove effective in delineating limestone beds, but aeromagnetic surveys helped map the underlying clastic unit. The remote-sensing data and especially high-resolution digital elevation models helped in identification of karst topography related to limestone."

Commodity currency intrigues most of us because of the problems it offers to solve for the Third and the First Worlds. What problems might be solved, if commodity currency were to be adopted in the Third World? That is really the question we are probing here right now. It would take a while to think through all their subtle consequences of this question, but, off the top, it might well have at least three important impacts. Most important of these to this audience is relief from unfair Third World competition. Second, it might well liberate Third World economies from financial indebtedness to the First World and give them freedom from the liquidity limitations. The third benefit is that it might help relieve World trade tensions. All three benefits are interrelated. We could start our speculations on the application of commodity currency from anyone of these starting points. But let us use the starting point most important to you, unfair competition to the U.S. mining industry. From there we might wind up with some thoughts on things you, yourselves, can do to improve things.

The most perplexing problem that has confronted mining engineers since the dawn of mining has been strata control. For the purposes of this paper, strata control will be defined as control of ground in the immediate area surrounding the, mine opening. To prevent movement of the surrounding strata into underground mine openings, miners have traditionally relied upon some type of artificial supports placed within the openings and located in a manner determined by trial and error from previous experience. Without the means to measure changes of stress in the supports and within the mine structure itself, an evaluation of the efficiency of the supports and mining system was impossible. Strata control thus remained an art with very little application of science. During recent years a revolution has occurred in mining. The modern mining engineer is contented no longer-with trial and error methods but is utilizing all the technological information at his command to obtain a solution to this age old problem. However, serious problems have arisen due to the lack of certain basic knowledge in three important areas: 1, The original stress distribution within the earth strata prior to mining. 2, Redistribution and concentration of the original stresses with mining activity. 3. The properties of rock that are significant in failure and its prevention.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a finite element analysis of roof stresses associated with a 4-foot-high by 18-foot-wide underground coal mine entry. This analysis starts with known loading conditions determined in an underground coal mine in West Virginia and is extended to other possible underground loading conditions. The roof failures predicted by the finite element analysis under known loading conditions correlate well with the roof failures observed underground. The most probable failure modes are identified for the various loading conditions considered. Various failure preventive measures are discussed.

AT THE TIME of my first visit to Bolivia in 1927 the tin-mining industry was prosperous, the tin price at London being more than £300 per long ton of tin, and the operators were making every effort to bring their plants up to the very highest point of capacity as well as of efficiency. Any device or piece of equipment or method that gave promise of increasing production was welcomed regardless of the cost, and the plants were being modernized as rapidly as human ingenuity could make it possible. At the time of my second visit in 1932, however, conditions had changed materially. The price of tin had fallen to a little over £100 but costs had not decreased anywhere in proportion and operators were at their wit's end to cut the operating losses that were everywhere prevalent. Charles L. Bradbury, manager of the Empresa Minera de Huanuni, at Huanuni, Bolivia, had been recently called from Mexico to make all analysis of the situation and to attempt to work out a remedy for the economic conditions that threatened to close the mine. While the statistical summary focuses on 1991 data, this update and outlook section draws on information available to the author as of the date of final preparation in early 1993. For all the press notoriety associated with the shift in the Near East crisis from the defensive posture of Desert Shield to the restoration of Kuwaiti sovereignty through Desert Storm, this was not the dominant event governing global economic thinking in 1991 and the first half and more of 1992. From the global perspective, the momentous political changes in the area that was the U.S.S.R. and in the smaller emerging transitional economy states of Eastern Europe will have even greater current and long-lasting effects on world mineral industry activities than the crisis in the Near East.

A number of investigators have studied the electrokinetic potential (?) of kaolinite as a function of pH. (1,2,3,4,5) These investigators all agree that the ? is negative except at quite acid pH values. The actual shapes of the curves reported by the several authors vary considerably. In spite of the general negative character of kaolinite the mineral has a rather high anion exchange capacity. (6,7,8) The cation exchange capacity is the lowest for the clay minerals. (6) It has been shown that anionic surfactants adsorb readily onto the mineral even up to neutrality, often in quantities exceeding the reported anion exchange capacity. (7,8) At least part of the anionic adsorption should be onto positive edge sites thought to exist on the mineral. (9,10) In the present study ? of kaolinite was measured as a function of pH using both the streaming potential (sp) and microelectrophoresis (m.e.p.) methods. In addition ? was measured at various pH values as functions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride (TMDAC) concentrations. In some experiments decyl alcohol (DA) was added.

Boliden Harjavalta Oy operates a copper smelter in Finland, which is based on flash smelting together with Peirce-Smith converting of copper matte. This paper reviews a case study when a high arsenic feed mixture was successfully eliminated in order to guarantee the anode quality. Based on theoretical and practical knowledge in slag chemistry at Outokumpu Research, the CaO-fluxing practice was introduced. Description of a thermodynamic simulation using MTDATA and implementation of the results into converting practice is given. Results showed that the impurity fluctuations in raw materials could be effectively controlled by efficient utilization of different slag chemistry.

Para esta labor, se debe evaluar el tipo de trabajo de la máquina, funcionamiento técnico y los materiales usados. En base a estos datos conocidos, se determina los riesgos inherentes en la producción, como de los riesgos profesionales inmediatos. La función primordial del programa de higiene industrial estriba en la formación somática, mental y emocional del trabajador para asegurar el lugar de ubicación donde este puede desarrollarse mejor, evitando arriesgar la integridad física del trabajador como de sus compañeros. Finalmente, se indica las reglas higiénicas generales como el ambiente higiénico de las horas libres del trabajador y su familia.

A regulação ambiental de processos industriais que geram efluentes contendo fluoretos é mundialmente restrita devido à alta toxicidade do íon. Na Ternium, a água de resfriamento recirculada no spray do Lingotamento Contínuo (WTP#2) dissolve parte do pó fluxante, resultando em concentrações de 20 a 30 mg/L de fluoreto. Para desenvolvimento do processo de tratamento de fluoreto que atendesse a legislação, mantendo no efluente tratado concentração de Fluoreto menor que 10mg/L e Alumínio menor que 3,0mg/L, foi realizada uma pesquisa utilizando um equipamento de Jar Teste convencional totalizando 165 ensaios. Os ensaios foram planejados segundo revisões bibliográficas descrevendo o método da precipitação química de fluoreto de cálcio, auxiliado por Cátions de Alumínio. Na conclusão da pesquisa, foi desenvolvida uma Rota Tecnológica para tratamento do efluente gerado na purga do sistema WTP#2 atendendo a legislação, atingindo uma remoção de 70% a 80% de Fluoreto. Ao final foi realizada uma etapa de otimização das dosagens, cujo resultado foi a redução do número de etapas de tratamento e uma redução na quantidade de produtos químicos utilizados, consequentemente reduzindo o custo de tratamento. A redução do custo de tratamento foi da ordem de 3 milhões de reais anuais, mantendo o efluente tratado com as concentrações dos contaminantes abaixo dos limites da regulação ambiental.
