Polycrystalline oxide superconductors that have the perovskite structure, that are oxygen deficient, and that have compositions based. on the so-called. 1-2-3 (YBa2Cu3O7) compound, were investigated.. The materials exhibit a high critical transition to superconductivity at temperatures near 90oK. It was determined that maintaining the oxygen content within the correct range in connection with an appropriate amount of CU ions in the crystal lattice leads to high-critical temperature (Tc:) superconducting properties. High-Tc: superconductors with a critical temperature in the range of 100°K were developed. Further investigations, based. on the theoretical examinations of the origin of superconductivity, have been performed and are discussed..

The problem of fine coal slimes has been addressed in a unique way at A. T. Massey Coal?Company. Several plants have employed two-stage classifying cyclones to separate the minus 1 mm raw coal into 3 sizes. Larger cyclones make the initial cut at approximately 150 µ (100?mesh) sending the underflow to a cleaning circuit (usually spirals) while the overflow is pumped to a secondary cyclone circuit using smaller cyclones. The small cyclones make a cut at near 70 µ (200 mesh) and produce an underflow that is a des limed flotation feed. The overflow is discarded to refuse due to its high ash and superfine size which would produce a high moisture product even if suitably recovered.

"This paper investigates the reverse flotation of hematite in three laboratory flotation cells with very different contacting environments. The main objectives are to investigate the recovery of coarse quartz by flotation and fine hematite by entrainment. The laboratory flotation cells used were the mechanical, oscillating grid and pneumatic cells. The effect of froth height and solid concentration were investigated in the mechanical and pneumatic cells. The effect of impeller speed and energy input were investigated in the mechanical and oscillating grid cells. Froth height results show that coarse quartz particle recovery decreases almost linearly with increasing froth height due to increased detachment of coarse quartz particles in the froth. Fine hematite particle recovery also decreases almost linearly with increasing froth height due to decreased water recovery and associated entrainment. Agitation/energy input results show that coarse quartz particle recovery increases with increasing impeller speed to an optimum, after which this decreases dramatically. The increase is due to improved gas dispersion, generation of smaller bubbles and increased bubble-particle collision and attachment. The decrease is due to significantly increased bubble-particle detachment at higher impeller speeds. The recovery of coarse quartz particles in the OGC is higher than that in the mechanical cell with an optimum at a much lower energy input. Solids concentration results show that both mass recovery and water recovery increase with increasing solid concentrations. The pneumatic cell achieves higher mass recoveries and lower water recoveries than those in the mechanical cell at equivalent solids concentrations and operating conditions. INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a selective process for separating different minerals from each other. The flotation separation efficiency depends on the recoveries of the mineral species by both true flotation and entrainment (Neethling and Cilliers 2009; Wang et al. 2015). Both chemical variables and hydrodynamic conditions within the flotation cell affect the recovery and selectivity of the flotation process. Cationic reverse flotation of hematite is a common method for selective separation of quartz from iron ores to produce pellet feed. The presence of coarse quartz particles in the tailings and fine hematite particles in the concentrate are two major challenges in the reverse flotation of hematite (Vieira and Peres 2007)."

Field tests have been conducted to investigate the characteristics of flow and physical chemistry of acid mine drainage(AMD) in the Hwangji-Yuchang settling pond in south Korea. pH and ferrous concentration of AMD flowed in the settling pond is 6.79 and 25.5 mg/l, respectively. As a results, we found that the ferrous oxidation reacted strongly around the inlet of the pond and the distributions of physicochemical properties is depended on flow characteristics and ferrous oxidation rate of AMD.

It is shown, from a study of geometric probabilities, that the average number of intercepts per unit length of a random line drawn through a three-dimensional structure is exactly half the true ratio of surface to volume. Since the surfaces can be internal or external, the area of grain boundary or of the interface between any two constituents in a micro-structure can be measured. Other metric relations are tabulated that may be of use in studies of the microstructure of polycrystalline, cellular, or particulate matter generally. IN many fields of scientific investigation the structure of cellular aggregates or random arrays of discrete particles imbedded in some matrix is observed on a two-dimensional section and inferences are drawn therefrom as to the real structure in three dimensions. The biologist's microtome slice, the petrologist's thin section, and the metallurgist's plane polished and etched sections are common examples, although the problem is a general one. Scientists have commonly limited their thinking to the same dimensionality as their structures, and the few attempts that have been strictly three-dimensional in character have been laborious and noteworthy. From a metallurgical standpoint it is often of considerable importance to know, in addition to the volume fraction of two or more components in an alloy, the amount of two-dimensional interface between crystals. Such grain boundaries (which may separate either two identical crystals differing only in orientation or two crystals differing in structure, and possibly also in orientation) have a determining factor upon the mechanical behavior. It is at these boundaries that melting commences, that stress-induced corrosion occurs, and that various precipitates (harmful or otherwise) first appear. The boundary is doubtless of equal importance in nonmetallic crystalline aggregates such as rocks, ceramics, and concrete, and the biologist is deeply concerned with the area of cellular membranes. Many synthetic cellular foams involve similar structural problems. The very term structure usually implies the presence of interfaces and a complete understanding of structure involves nothing but an analysis of the geometrical, metrical, and topological relations between the various interfaces (zero, one and two-dimensional) that exist in a three-dimensional structure. Even systems lacking sharp physical interfaces often have interrelated gradients of composition or velocity (as cored crystals or turbulence cells) in which a neutral surface can be treated as a two-dimensional interface. In an earlier paper by one of the authors' the question of cell shape was considered in terms of simple topological principles without regard to physical dimensions. The determination of the actual size of grains in two dimensions is carried out in a routine fashion in innumerable metallurgical laboratories (see, for example, the ASTM standard methods of grain size determination2), though this is done merely to check the uniformity of a product and has no relation to the actual three-dimensional shape or size of the grains. Some authors have discussed the three-dimensional problem but only on the basis of assumptions as to idealized grain shapes.:'-' Quantitative measurements of microstruc-tures to obtain the volumetric relations of various phases have been carried out by petrographers for many years and are of increasing popularity among metallurgists." The present paper will show how, on the basis of no assumptions other than randomness of sectioning (usually realizable in experiment), it is possible to learn a great deal about the three-dimensional structure. The relations to be derived will generally be used on random arrays of cells or other particles, although they are equally applicable to ordered arrays and even to isolated objects of complex shape provided that suitable random sections can be made. Total Area of Interfaces in a Sample Consider a typical microstructure of a single-phase polyerystalline metal, such as that shown pres- in Fig. 1. The plane cross section shown contains a network of lines which subdivides the area into two-dimensional cells. The lines, of course, represent merely the intersection of the two-dimensional plane of sectioning with the two-dimensional interfaces between adjacent three-dimensional cells. The structure also contains points at which two or more lines intersect: in three dimensions the points are, of course, lines. In the more general case there may be in three dimensions isolated particles surrounded by a single interface without contact with others, and both two and one-dimensional features which do not necessarily connect with others. Although alumina constitutes about ii percent of the earth's crust, it is expensive to separate and purify for the production of aluminum with the exception off the alumina in bauxite. The United states has a variety of non-bauxite resources that could substitute for bauxite, including high alumina clays, alunite, dawsonite in oil shale, anorthosite, and nepheline syenite. Each of these resources are discussed from the standpoint of geology, geography, processing, potential recovery, and environmental problems. Potential by-products include silica from clays, potash and sulfuric acid from alunite, soda ash from dawsonite, and soda ash and potash from anorthosite and nepheline syenite.

"The Candego property is in Boisbuisson and Christie Townships, Quebec, about 13 miles south of Marsoui, a village on the north coast of the Gaspe peninsula, 80 miles east of the railhead at Matane. It was the first producing mine in the peninsula. Production to October 1954, when operations were suspended, totalled 68,497 tons of ore, which yielded concentrates containing 8,706,535 lb. lead, 5,870,272 lb. zinc, 355,526 oz. silver, and about 1,000 oz. gold. The property was acquired by the present company in the summer of 1955.The mine has been developed by seven adits, driven into the west slope of the valley of the Marsoui River. The river here is at an elevation of about 1,600 feet, and is roughly 1,500 feet below the level of the adjacent upland. Adit elevations range from 1,760 to 2,330 feet. Five of them are in one vertical zone, on what was originally believed to be a single vein. Past production has come from Nos. l to 5; the chief present high-grade ore reserves are in No. 7.The author's observations were made in adits Nos. 3 to 6, in several of the old pits, in the surface trenches, and on drill core, at various times between December 1952 and September 1953. Much of the surrounding area has been mapped by Jones (I) and McGerrigle (2) for the Quebec Department of Mines. H. M. Kingsbury served as consulting geologist to the mining company for several years.General GeologyThe Candego veins occur in Lower ( ?) Ordovician sedimentary rocks which form a strip about 15 miles wide along the north coast of the Gaspé peninsula. The series includes limestones, shales, and sandstones, mildly metamorphosed in places. Three miles south of the mine is the north contact of the granitic intrusive, regarded as Lower or Middle Devonian, which underlies the Tabletop Mountains area. This batholith is about 10 miles long, in a north-south direction, and about 4 miles wide. At Mount Albert, about 5 miles west of the Tabletop intrusion, is a group of basic rocks, amphibolites and serpentinized peridotites, thought to have been intruded at the close of the Ordovician."

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da potência do laser Yb:vidro a fibra, no que diz respeito a extensão dos efeitos estruturais promovido e a possibilidade de corte de uma chapa de NiTi equiatômica austenítica com evidência de encruamento. Após a tentativa de corte a laser, a caracterização foi realizada através de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) / espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de Raios X (EDS) e análise de nanoindentação instrumentada. De acordo com os resultados obtidos pode-se observar que nenhum dos parâmetros de corte a laser usados nos 3 cortes distintos foi suficiente para promover o seccionamento da chapa, bem como revelou evidências de recristalização em conjunto a uma significativa oxidação superficial na zona termicamente afetada.

As superligas de níquel apresentam boa combinação de resistência à corrosão e à oxidação, resistência mecânica, resistência à fadiga e à fluência, além de conseguirem operar em temperaturas elevadas, mantendo tais propriedades. A liga Inconel 625 vem sendo estudada como revestimentos, obtidos por cladeamento ou aspersão térmica, para tubos de aços ao carbono utilizados nas indústrias de petróleo e gás. Esses tubos poderão ser unidos pela técnica de soldagem, quando então se obtém uma junta Inconel-Inconel, e isso pode acarretar modificações nas propriedades dessas superligas. O presente trabalho objetiva obter uma junta soldada da liga Inconel 625 empregandose o processo de soldagem a arco utilizando eletrodo revestido Ni-Cr-Mo 3 e caracterizar o cordão de solda quanto à microestrutura, à dureza e à corrosão. A microestrutura foi avaliada por microscopia óptica; para dureza foi realizado perfil de microdureza Vickers ao longo da junta soldada; quanto à corrosão foram realizadas curvas potenciodinâmicas em três diferentes soluções: 3,5% NaCl, 3,5% NaCl + 0,01M Na2S2O3 e 3,5% NaCl + 1N H2SO4. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a zona fundida tem microestrutura dendrítica, sendo a zona afetada pelo calor de aproximadamente 1,2 mm de extensão. A solda não alterou significativamente as propriedades de corrosão e dureza.

Amostras de aço inoxidável UNSS31803 duplex foram nitretadas sob plasma em atmosfera gasosa de 75% de nitrogênio e 25% de hidrogênio em temperatura de 400°C durante 20 horas. A microestrutura do material como recebido apresentava cordões de ferrita e austenita, alinhados no sentido da laminação, com aproximadamente 50% de cada uma das fases. A caracterização microestrutural foi feita por microscopia óptica, difração de raios X, MEV e EBSD. As propriedades mecânicas e tribológicas das superfícies tratadas foram avaliadas utilizando ensaios de microdureza e esclerometria linear instrumentada. As camadas obtidas na nitretação a plasma em baixa temperatura (LTPN) eram constituídas por ferrita expandida (aN) e austenita expandida (?N), com durezas de 1509 HV e de 1362 HV, respectivamente. Os ensaios de esclerometria linear mostraram que, num primeiro estágio, o indentador se movimenta sobre a camada nitretada, promovendo deformação plástica nas bordas do sulco, denotando a possibilidade de movimentação de discordância nas fases expandidas da camada nitretada. O coeficiente de atrito medido durante esse estágio ficou estável em torno de 0,05. Ao final do primeiro estágio houve início de formação de microtrincas, aumentando o coeficiente de atrito aparente. A transição para o 2º estágio ocorre com formação de microtrincas cuja densidade aumenta com o aumento da profundidade de risco. Nesse estágio o coeficiente de atrito cresce linearmente com o tempo e profundidade de risco, o número de microtrincas cresce e as microtrincas observadas são predominantemente transgranulares, típicas de falha coesiva da camada. Foram observadas, também, microtrincas intergranulares que causam o destacamento individual de pequenos grãos de ferrita e/ou austenita expandida. No terceiro estágio de riscamento o coeficiente de atrito aparente tende a se estabilizar em torno de 0,16. O ensaio de esclerometria linear realizado no aço como recebido apresenta coeficiente de atrito sempre crescente até atingir um valor em torno de 0,21.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia.An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared.The difficulties of distinguishing structured and nonstructured macerals of the inertinite group are discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present StopesHeerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

"Longwall abutment loads are influenced by several factors, including depth of cover, pillar sizes, panel dimensions, geological setting, mining height, proximity to gob, intersection type, and size of the gob. How does proximity to the gob affect pillar loading and entry condition? Does the gob influence depend on whether the abutment load is a forward, side, or rear loading? Do non-typical bleeder entry systems follow the traditional front and side abutment loading and extent concepts? If not, will an improved understanding of the combined abutment extent warrant a change in pillar design or standing support in bleeder entries?This paper details observations made in the non-typical bleeder entries of a moderate depth longwall panel; specifically, it explores data collected from borehole pressure cells and roof extensometers, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced due to the extraction of the longwall panels. Due to the layout of the longwall panels and bleeder entries, the borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and roof extensometers did not show much change due to the advancing of the first longwall. However, they did show a noticeable increase due to the second longwall advancement, a maximum of about 4 MPa of pressure increase and 5 mm of roof deformation. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the first longwall panel extraction began to when the second longwall panel had been advanced more than 915 meters. Localized pillar spalling was observed on the corners of the pillars closest to the longwall gob as was an increase in water in the entries. In addition to the observations and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to validate modeling procedures against the monitoring results and evaluate the bleeder design. ITASCA Consulting Group’s FLAC3D numerical modeling software was used to evaluate the bleeder entries. The results of the models indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panels. These models showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries—about 80% development and 20% longwall extraction. The FLAC3D model showed very good correlation between modeled and expected gateroad loading during panel extraction. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels."

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

Four fcc metal surfaces, etched to make them responsive to polarized light, have been studied with an electron microscope. Jones'prediction that these surfaces are grooved has been verified. Optical-goniometer measurements made on commercially pure nickel indicate that the groove walls are poorly defined (100) facets. Surface mientations close to either 4001 or {ill).- show no extinctions on the polam'zid-light microscope. An explanation is offered for this orientation dependence. It has also been deduced that polarized-light extinctions on a grooved cubic-metal surface should not be used directly in crystallographic-orientation determinations. The nature of the etching solutions that produce these surfaces is considered. A cubic-metal surface may be made responsive to polarized light in two basic ways."' In one, an anodic film, believed anisotropic, is formed on the surface. A plane-polarized-light beam, at normal incidence, should be reflected from this type of film with an ellipticity that varies with grain orientation. Under crossed polarizers of a polarized-light microscope, each grain may be distinguished from its neighbors by a difference in reflected-light intensity. An alternate treatment,' more generally applicable to cubic metals and of principal concern here, involves etching of grain surfaces. The characteristic features of this surface were first deduced by Jones3 from light-microscope observations. She concluded that, in general, grain surfaces were furrowed so that light was reflected from two parallel sets of etched facets. A grooved surface produces elliptical polarization of a plane-polarized beam because the beam does not strike groove walls at normal incidence. Jones also observed that the furrows must have faces inclined to each other by approximately 90 deg, since the light returns along the incident path, and that a grooved surface should show four maxima and minima of reflected-light intensity during a 360-deg stage rotation of the polarizing microscope. Positions of maximum extinction were predicted to occur when groove axes were parallel to either polarizer or analyzer vibration directions. Because of the limited resolving power of Jones' optical microscope, her deductions were primarily indirect. Proof of the correctness of her conclu-sions, as demonstrated by the electron microscope, will be given as well as evidence concerning the crystallographic nature of the etch furrows and the types of etching solutions that produce them. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE During a comprehensive study of hot plastic deformation in nickel and nickel alloys, an etch was evolved that produced a surface with an excellent polarized-light response on Nickel 200 ("A" Nickel). The etching solution and associated metal-lographic procedures are given in Table I. In evaluating this etch, a study was made of the topological features of the etched surface and their relation to the underlying crystalline structure. As part of this investigation, large crystals (2 mm average diameter) were grown in a 1-cm-sq Nickel 200 specimen. After the surface was etched, the crystallographic orientations of ten grains were determined by the standard back-reflection Laue technique of Gren-inger.4 Maximum extinction positions during a microscope stage rotation were also measured for the ten grains. Groove-wall positions on the surfaces of the ten grains were measured with a two-circle optical goniometer. The technique was essentially that of Barrett and Levenson.5 Several grain surfaces were photographed with a Philips Model 100A electron microscope. All specimens were replicated with collodion, or collodion backed with formvar and chromium shadowed at 18 to 20 deg. The basic material was Nickel 200. However, an electron-micrographic study was also made of surfaces developed by polarized-light etches on other fcc metals (90-10 a brass, Monel 400, and lead). All etching procedures are given in Tables I and 11. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows typical electron micrographs of three different fcc metal specimens and an optical micrograph of a fourth. All photographs show a grooved structure corresponding closely to Jones'3 predictions. Also, as noted by Jones, extinctions were always observed when groove axes were either parallel or perpendicular to the microscopes' vertical cross hair. The symmetry of the grooves, with respect to the twin boundaries in Fig. 1, implies that furrows have a crystallographic basis. The coarse-grained Nickel 200 specimen was used to study this basis. Vibratory driver/extractors do more than drive and extract sheet piles. I would say more than sixty percent (60%) of the time, vibratory pile driver/extractors are engaged in work that has nothing to do with sheet piles. This is the main reason I refer to this tool as a "driver/extractor", and omit the word "pile". I have spent the last twenty years applying the technology of the vibratory driver/ extractor to all areas of foundation construction. As you will see, the only limits are humankind's ingenuity.

El presente texto describe el proceso electrolítico del zinc en Cerro de Pasco, dado que el método de obtención del zinc se emplea en el 40% de la producción mundial. Este proceso comprende seis etapas: tostación, lixiviación, filtración, purificación, electrolisis, fundición y moldeo. La tostación es el tratamiento del concentrado que convierte el sulfuro de zinc en óxido, que es un compuesto soluble en la solución lixiviadora o ácido sulfúrico empleado. La lixiviación comprende la disolución de la calcina en el electrolito gastado que sale de las celdas y elimina ciertas impurezas tales como fierro, arsénico y antimonio con bióxido de manganeso. La filtración de la solución lixiviada separa la materia insoluble, junto con las impurezas precipitadas, de la solución de sulfato de zinc. En la purificación, se disminuye las impurezas como Cd y Cu, mientras que en la electrólisis pasa por un equipo de fuerza, tanques, electrodos, ánodos, cátodos. Finalmente en la etapa de fundición y moldeo, se funden los cátodos de zinc para su moldeo en barras de forma comercial, con un peso de 25 kilos cada una. Este método es simple y económico, debido especialmente a la calidad de nuestros concentrados.

THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry increased substantially in 1962, compared with the 1961 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. The steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize for the third year; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 2 previous years; and the tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. The percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1962-422 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 403 million tons produced in 1961. Production was greater in 1962, owing largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities and to more exports.

When one looks back and does assessments of what has been the key ingredient in achieving success in our safety efforts, there are many issues that spring to mind and cover a wide array of elements. One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.
