This paper describes the design of the precast concrete segmental lining for the 13.1 m internal diameter and 450 mm thick, 2.4 km long mainline tunnels for the Waterview Connection project in Auckland for the New Zealand Transport Agency.The design and detailing of this segmental lining presented some noteworthy challenges, including an alignment that has sections of low cover in soft ground. Key points of interest are that this precast segmental lining is the largest to ever include steel fibres as the primary method of reinforcement and the lining includes cams on circumferential joints to control ring deformation.The paper describes some of the key design decisions that were made in a collaborative manner with the construction team, tunnel boring machine manufacturer, segment manufacturer and the designers.CITATION:Mahajan, R, Kuras, A and Pradhan, S, 2014. This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors.   Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs.   New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt.   Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October.   The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007.   Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

Some preliminary results on the secondary leaching of previously heap leached gold ore are presented. Alternative lixiviants for gold comprising chlorine, thiourea and thiosulphate were compared with cyanide using bottle roll tests. Chlorine was subsequently selected for column leaching tests. Column tests at 1.0, 0.1 and 0.01 gL-1 Cl2 at pH 2 were conducted. The results indicated that about 23 per cent of the gold was leached over 45 days using 1 gL-1 Cl2 at pH 2. The experiments conducted proved that the chlorine/chloride system has good potential for further extraction of gold and silver from the existing cyanide heap leach residues and a process for secondary leaching of gold has been proposed. Further testwork is recommended to extend conditions, sample types, and the duration of leaching period.

Those familiar with the war in France at first hand know that in these last two years the weight of the suffering has fallen upon the families of the well-to-do classes; those who before the war lived in comparative ease and comfort, with every prospect of educating their children as their parents and grandparents had been. Thousands of the men in these families have been killed, "officiers d'élite," and the small pensions accorded the widows permit them only to house and feed their children HELÈNE JOURNÈS. and give them a common-school education. The pension for a lieutenant's widow is $245 a year; for 'a captain's, $345; for a colonel's $575; and so on. At present, it requires three francs a day to provide food for one person in cities, and conditions are not improving. The American Ouvroir Funds, 681 Fifth Ave., New York City, has tried for nearly two years to have individual Americans give individual children a "bourse," or purse, as it is called, of from $150 to $250 a year, so that they may enter such educational institutions as the Lycées, the Polytechnique, Beaux Arts, St. Cyr, etc. The war relief societies of these military schools furnish photographs and histories of children under their care and on their lists.

The net balance of the inflow and outflow of water in a tailings storage facility has major economic implications in any large mining and milling operation. In a net precipitation environment it can control the ultimate size and storage capacity of a facility or dictate the need for an expensive treatment and discharge program. In a net evaporation environment it can control the extent of the water rights acquisitions required for makeup water and dictate the number and size of expensive wells and pumping and delivery systems. The elements considered in a water balance analysis include the anticipated production rate, the water content of the slurry used to deliver the tailings, inflow from precipitation and snowmelt, and losses from evaporation and seepage. The mine can exert significant control over only one of these elements: the production rate. All others are subject to considerable uncertainty from month to month and year to year. The traditional approach is to analyze in a spreadsheet environment by making simplifying assumptions and using monthly mean or "average" values for precipitation inflows and evaporation losses. Often the analysis will be repeated with values subjectively assigned to represent a "wet" year or "dry'' year. The probabilistic approach uses the same basic spreadsheet model in conjunction with a probabilistic simulation add-in program allowing probability distributions to be substituted for any of the deterministic variables. The resulting analysis shows the full range of variation possible for each parameter of interest (i.e., available return water, makeup water required, storage, seepage losses) and estimates the exceedance probabilities for each. The potential uses and advantages of the probabilistic approach are discussed.

The interaction of flotation collectors with sulfide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulfides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidised to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidised xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulfides is discussed briefly.

Costly damage by severe wave attack to many engineering structures has illustrated the need for a consideration of the nature of wave action in plans for offshore drilling operations. Using wave data it is possible to answer questions pertaining to engineering problems such as platform elevation, structure orientation, and expected wave forces. For locations where wave records are not available a technique can be used to obtain information about wave characteristics from past meteorological data and near shore submarine topography. Forces exerted on structures by waves may be divided into four parts. A completed study is given in which frequencies of various wave heights and maximum frictional drag forces are computed for a typical offshore drilling site. INTRODUCTION Waves of tremendous proportions accompanying hurricane winds crash against breakwaters and other offshore structures causing untold damages. Wave forces exerted on structures at these times are enormous, as shown by past records of incidents where massive portions of breakwaters have been broken off and moved by waves. On other similar occasions, whole structure; have been unloosed and smashed or floated away. These incidents, which seem almost incredible, serve to illustrate the great amount of energy contained in large waves, and to show that this energy results in powerful forces destructive to offshore installation~ which are not designed sufficiently strong to withstand wave attack. In the past the expected frequencies of waves having various characteristic.% have rarely been considered in the design of structure affected by wave action. As a result, many structures have failed to accomplish the purpose for which they were designed or have collapsed under wave attack. Others have been constructed to withstand greater wave energy than is ever encountered, with resulting waste of material and construction time. In this study an analysis is made of the frequencies of waves having different characteristics which affect the plans for offshore drilling installations. After such an analysis the erection of these structures can proceed with less risk involved and with more efficiency and economy. ENGINEERING ASPECTS In the offshore drilling program wave forces play an extremely important part in design and construction of drilling rigs in shallow water. The design of a platform or other structure from which drilling equipment is operated is critical, becauze any damage to the platform may endanger personnel and result in complete loss of equipment. Since a platform built too close to the water would be battered by breakers, and one built unnecessarily high would involve undue expense, it is necessary to know the most desirable elevation at which the platform should be erected. This is only one of many questions about structural planning which can be answered using existing technique for determining wave characteristics. The purpose of efficient design for the portions of many types of offshore structures which are acted upon by wave forces is the same as that of all designs which deal with frictional forces of a fluid on a solid. For these structures the problem is comparable to that encountered by undersea craft moving through water, except that in the case of a fixed structure the force is produced by the water moving past the model. For off shore sructures which are extremely rigid the frictional forces may be nearly negligible compared with the impact or shock forces imparted by breaking waves. In all case; the better design is that which offers the least resistance to the opposing forces. From a consideration of wave forces, each drilling structure varies in efficiency depending upon the type and amount of superstructure in contact with the waves. For example, round piling and bracing offer less resistance to wave forces than do I-shaped ones. All network superstructure such as cross bracing should be kept to a minimum and at as low an elevation as possible, so that it will not expecience the pressure exerted at the tops of breaking waves. Models of proposed structures can be tested in wave tanks and in the field to ascertain the efficiency of specific designs. Past experience in beach and shoreline engineering has shown that, although changes in the topography of the bottom very near shore do not seem to be occurring, the natural forces involved may be in a delicate balance such that a static state exists. Interruptions of any of these natural forces by erecting offshore structures are likely to cause undesirable effects. Changes in beach profile result partly from sediment being brought into suspension by the orbital motion of waves and partly from the transport of sediment by longshore currents. With the erection of an offshore structure and consequent change in the combined effects of these two forces, unfavorable deposition upon, or erosion of, the bottom at the site may occur. Therefore, combination wave and current studies are essential for the solution of problems involved in the design of most marine structures. TECHNIQUE FOR OBTAINING WAVE INFORMATION In determining the probable effect of wave action on an offshore drilling structure, it is first necessary to know the usual frequencies of certain wave types for the given location. A unique situation has developed at an abandoned coal mine in St. Clair County, Illinois. Subsidence features have been observed at the ground surface over the mine including settlement of a pair of bridges for Illinois Route 158. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is currently replacing the two bridges. Foundation treatment for the two new bridges included backfilling the mine void. The light rail system for St Louis (MetroLink) is also constructing a bridge over the same abandoned coal mine less than 1000 ft from the Route 158 bridges. The new MetroLink bridge is being constructed using piles which extend through the coal mine and overlying bedrock in order to transfer the loads to below the mine floor. The differing foundation types for the IDOT and MetroLink bridges were due to geometry and economic factors involved with the individual structures.

INTRODUCTION Documentary complications arise from the risk apportionment in project financing which generally means that once the project is up and running and has satisfied the lender's completion test, the loan agreement specifically limits the lender's recourse to the project and its assets. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the special considerations which apply to industrial minerals projects and explore the reasons why so few project financings are negotiated in this industry. SIZE Small projects do not warrant the relatively high costs of negotiating and documenting project financing. The extent of the documentation is directly proportionate to either (a) the degree of risk apportionment, or (b) the amount of control given to lawyers to negotiate the documents. Although one would like to believe that project-finance documentation could be off-the-shelf, it is almost always necessary to tailor the documents to the mine development itself and the individual desires of the borrower. Accordingly, the documentation costs and initial expenses are seldom less than $40,000, and for complex projects can reach $400,000. In addition, banks often charge an up-front fee to partly compensate them for their staff time and partly to increase their yield on what is deemed to be a "riskier" loan asset. Another factor is the generally lower debt:equity ratio when bankers are uncertain of the accuracy of the cash flow projections. The ratio of the amount of cash flow left over after debt service to debt service itself is a key tool for project finance (debt service coverage). Bankers will require a higher coverage ratio for industrial minerals projects because of the relatively higher uncertainties in the following categories: Prices Markets Geology/Quality Transportation Environmental This, in turn, means that lower debt:equity ratios are the norm for new industrial minerals projects. INDUSTRY STRUCTURE It is hardly worthwhile to generalise about a field as diverse as industrial minerals, but there are four other structural reasons why project financing has not been widely applied. 1. The most obvious example is the predominance of small-sized operations, largely a function of transportation economics. Geological conditions also contribute to their dispersion. 2. Often, the product is only a small part of a company's business in contrast to many petroleum, metals, or coal companies whose sole business is the production of the raw material. The construction industry is a good example here for cement, gypsum, crushed stone, sand and gravel, and the drilling-mud services business for barite and bentonite. A company is unlikely to jeopardise its main business through the failure of a project financing on one of its key inputs. The corrollary is that the mined input is often regarded as a cost centre and not run on the sort of economic basis suitable for project financing. 3. There may be a reluctance to reveal key aspects of an industrial minerals venture to an outsider for purely competitive reasons. A method using computer techniques is described for the comparative evaluation of truck performance over any given haul road using readily obtainable manufacturers' data. An additional computer program is utilized to calculate individual cycle times for each truck and shovel combination, fleet requirements for any desired production rate, and to estimate comparative costs. The introduction of a large number of variables into the program permits management to determine the critical system factors having the greatest bearing on costs. Thus, the method described can be used not only for analysis of needs for a new surface mine but for cost improvement in existing mines where changes in truck and shovel operations are contemplated. The systems analysis approach to the solution of problems in the mining industry is gaining in industry acceptance. This is a logical development in view of the fact that a mine constitutes one of the most dynamic systems of production. In contrast with a manufacturing plant, situated in a location selected through choice and utilizing a regulated source of quality controlled raw materials, the miner must go where the ore is and he is faced with ever changing physical conditions. He is subjected to the vagaries of nature, and he can never mine the same ore twice. What is systems engineering? There seems to be no concise and universally accepted definition of the term and its meaning is still fairly local. It deals largely with trade-offs of subsystem characteristics to achieve some desired result in an overall system. This concept of suboptimization can be explained by an example. If the objective of a mining company is to produce a certain quality ore at minimum cost, the optimum operation is not achieved by minimizing all costs, since all phases of mining are interrelated. Reduction of blasting costs might well increase loading, hauling, and crushing costs out of proportion to the resulting saving in explosives. Hence tradeoffs are necessary. It is evident then that an optimum system is achieved through a blending of suboptimal components which taken together yield the desired result. The curvilinear nature of shear strength envelopes for rock discontinuities may be simply and precisely represented by a power curve. The development of shear strength criteria applicable to rock discontinuities is reviewed and related to a theoretical basis for curvilinearity. An approach is reported to enable the quantification of the two power curve indices using a nomogram based on empirical studies. Using a knowledge of discontinuity basic friction angle and peak dilation angle the relevant indices ranges may be predicted for mine slope studies.

Laser profilometers exist for obtaining very accurate two and three dimensional profiles of joint surfaces. The application of this technology is not commonly applied to the collection of field data on discontinuity surface roughness. Rugged and portable field devices are not commonly used and the value of the possible field data that can be collected has not been well recognised. This paper reviews commonly used field techniques for assessing discontinuity roughness, discusses the value of this data and presents a new laser profilometer design for field application.

In 2021, the University of Pittsburgh began construction of a new recreation and wellness center for students and faculty in the heart of its main campus in Pittsburgh. The design and plans for the center promote the university's goals to create a unique place for members to stay active and to sustainably develop the area within its urban campus. The new 270,000 sq ft (25,000 sq m) center is being constructed within the footprint of two former campus buildings that were demolished, the O'Hara Parking Plaza and the Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC). The recreation center borders O'Hara Street on its south side, the ramp to receiving for the Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPIC) on the west side, an internal campus service road called University Drive A on the north side and a long thin area that will become a new terraced pathway on the east side. The existing site grade ranges from elevation 965-1,058 ft (294-323 m) within the area of the proposed recre­ation center. The ground surface at the site slopes between O'Hara Street in the south upward to the service road in the north with a grade difference of approx­imately 100 ft (30.5 m). The bottom of the excavation for the new center will be near the lowest elevation of O'Hara Street, requiring support of excavation (SOE) on the north (LRDC and O'Hara walls) and west (WPIC wall) sides. Mascaro Construction Company, the general contractor, engaged Nicholson Construction Company for the first stage of the construction, which included existing building demolition, earthwork and SOE systems. Nicholson designed and constructed the SOE systems along the site's north and west sides as described.

The coulombimetric reduction method has been used as an evaluation technique for Pb-Ca-Sn anode corrosion in the LIX-SX-EW process. The proposed methodology involves three consecutive steps, i.e., cleaning, oxidation and reduction. They are carried out in the same experimental unit, in solutions containing 180 g/L H2S04 with and without the addition of cobalt. The authors have worked in a wide range of oxidation current densities, from 150 to 500 A/m2 for in a period from 0.5 to 120 hours. It can be concluded from the results that there would be a linear relationship between the applied electrical charge I*T (Coulomb) and the anode corrosion expressed as transformed Pb mass (mg), for solutions with or without the addition of cobalt. The exception is that for the last one the corrosion rate is 5 times faster, which was observed for every layer. From the evaluation of different corrosion layers, one can point out that its composition is mainly in the form of sulphate. In the presence of cobalt, about 67% of Pb would be as sulphate (PbSO4), about 27% as a basic oxide (PbO) and only 6% as oxide PbO2 on the surface. From this result, it appears that great transformations occurred in the metal/sulphate interface. Without the addition of cobalt, the proportion of oxide Pb02 on the surface increased up to 11.5%. According to the previous statement and considering that Pb was found mainly as sulphate, the authors recommend its determination be used as quality selection criterion. Its evaluation should be performed in the acid solutions with 200 ppm cobalt addition at an oxidation current density of 300 A/m2 for a period of 24 hours.

Real growth in the economy, increasing demand for electricity, and consumer stockpiling for a possible United Mineworkers of America (UMW) strike in October made 1984 a banner year for coal. Production and consumption climbed to record heights. Precautionary purchases brought inventories close to the peak levels of early 1981 when coal miners walked out for 72 days. Production slowed in the fourth quarter after labor and management concluded negotiations without a walkout. But output in every major coal producing state showed significant gains during the year US coal production totaled 807 Mt (890 million st) in 1984. This is a 13.8% increase over 1983 output. Lower production rates, principally in Appalachia, and sustained demand in the final quarter put downward pressure on coal stocks by the end of the year. Demand All market sectors experienced greater requirements for coal in 1984. Electric utility coal consumption increased 6.3%; exports climbed 4.8%; coke plants consumed 18.9% more coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 11.8%; and consumption in the residential/commercial sector rose 8.1%. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. This is a 7.4% gain over the previous consumption high of 668 Mt (737 million st) in 1983. This study was initiated by the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room- and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM) was economically sound or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets " are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains near outcrops and adverse geological conditions or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included the analysis of the geologic, geotechnical and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves; the analysis of historic changes in supply, demand and coal prices; the development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines; and the development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR), as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. The LDR is a good indicator of mine efficiency and overall coal recovery in modern longwall mines and, thus, is used to evaluate the increased costs associated with adding new development sections for extraction of small reserves. The study examines the economic feasibility of using unconventional longwalls for the recovery of medium-sized reserves, depending on site-specific geologic and geometric conditions.

"A procedure f or constructing a grinding mill dynamic model is proposed. This model is used in a dynamic simulator of are grinding circuits. The simulator is designed for flexible flow sheets involving different grinding mills and particle classifiers and is able to accept several single variable PID control loops. The dynamic model is validated on a laboratory ball mill, and calibrated to an industrial installation. The simulator is used for characterization of grinding circuit dynamic behaviour and tuning of control strategiesIntroductionThe ore grinding operation is a critical step of the ore preparation process because it is the last comminution stage before the separation of minerals. The properties of the ground minerals to be concentrated, control the quality and efficiency of the separation process. This is why it is important to control properly the operation of the last grinding stage, commonly constituted of a closed circuit ball mill with classifier . To provide an adequate fine product, the grinding operation should compensate for the perturbations of the feed characteristics (size analysis, grindability, etc.). The main objective is to maintain a constant size distribution for providing stable operating conditions to the separation units. Simultaneously another usual objective is to operate the grinding circuit at a maximum capacity.Automatic control applied to grinding circuit s is the appropriate approach to improve its operation. Most frequently average optimal operating conditions are determined from steady -state performances of the circuit , and the automatic control is used for stabilizing the operation at selected values of the process variables . In the traditional approach, one or several single input! single output (SISO) control loops are implemented and empirically tuned. Advanced control practices'!' are based on a quantitative analysis of the circuit dynamics, which could also give a basis for the tuning of conventional SISO 100ps(2)."
