The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (US EPA 319 program) provided funding to aid a public-private effort in the installation of an environmentally-friendly system to treat abandoned mine drainage at Jennings Environmental Education Center (Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources). Through this cooperative effort among state and federal agencies, mining, excavation, and environmental companies, college and home school students, Girl Scouts, and volunteers, a successful multi-component passive system, readily accessible for upgrades and public education/research activities, was built. 90 people were directly involved in construction of this award-winning system and about 1000 people annually benefit from the educational opportunities.

Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead smelter at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. The zinc circuit comprises three parallel operations: conventional fluid-bed roasting, direct zinc pressure leaching of concentrates and atmospheric leaching of zinc oxide fume recycled from the lead smelter. The products from these three areas are combined in the main leaching plant where they undergo iron purification. Unlike most leaching circuits, the leach process in Trail begins with an acid leach and is followed by a neutral leach. An evaluation was undertaken to determine if the process at Trail could be improved by converting to the conventional neutral leaching process with a subsequent acid leach of the residues. This paper explores the results of these tests and the implications for Trail Operations.

Impurity minerals in fluorspar ores and concentrates from a deposit in Southern Africa have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The principal impurities are quartz, calcite, aegirine, apatite, ankerite, magnetite, goethite, and synchysite [Ca(La,Ce,Nd)(CO3)2F]. Cathodoluminescence microscopy was found to be very useful in studying the character of the fluorite and especially for recognizing the presence of apatite and calcite impurities. Fluorite exhibits blue, calcite shows yellow, and apatite has white, light purple, and pink cathodoluminescence. The cathodoluminescent character of apatite varies with its geological environment and position in the orebody. The results of this microscopic study show that phosphorus present in fluorite concentrates occurs principally in binary locked apatite-fluorite particles. Successive fluorite cleaner concentrates contain progressively smaller amounts of locked apatite-fluorite particles. Free apatite has been effectively partitioned to the final tailings.

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The combination of Stage 1 Geoinformatics legacy data intervention processes with the Stage 2 ultra-detailed airborne geophysical prospecting demonstrates a new approach to converting data to information to knowledge, and converting that knowledge into exploration results.   The Coromandel region of the North Island of New Zealand has long been know to host gold deposits of economic viability (Hauraki Gold Fields). To the SE of this area lies the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) where the geology and structural setting mirror the Hauraki Gold Fields, however mineral exploration in the past has been hindered by the blanketing volcanic ash deposits. Glass Earth Limited recognised that this whole potential epithermal gold province could be effectively explored utilising rapid, risk orientated processing to review legacy geoscience data: The Geoinformatics Data Intervention Process; which in turn directed ultra detailed airborne geophysical surveys over the TVR. Results have outlined 21 new drillable potential epithermal gold targets; and a plethora of other targets with high prospectivity.

O objetivo desse trabalho é identificar a eficiência térmica do glendon de uma empresa do setor siderúrgico mineiro. Tendo em vista que quanto mais eficiente for o equipamento, maior é o aproveitamento da energia fornecida e também menor é o consumo de carvão vegetal no alto-forno, reduzindo o OPEX. Este trabalho foi um estudo de caso baseado na análise de diferentes referências bibliográficas e através de estudos prévios e dados reais. O glendon em estudo apresentou eficiência térmica de 53,1%. Estudos mais recentes apresentaram eficiência de 67,4% utilizando chicanas no interior do glendon alterando o fluxo gasoso. O combustível do glendon é o gás do topo do alto-forno recuperado. A energia proveniente da combustão representa 89% da entrada de energia no regenerador, o que mostra quão importante é uma queima estável do GAF no glendon. Observou-se um desperdício de 45,5% da energia de combustão que saem pelos gases na chaminé, sendo uma oportunidade futura de estudo para reaproveitamento dessa energia

The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) . PRIOR to 1908 the oil production in the State of California, had been almost entirely a heavy fuel, oil, with a high flash point, hut changed within a-short period to a large percentage of refining oil with a low flash, by reason of the coming in of the Santa Maria field, the Midway field, and the increased production of the Fullerton field. Production tests at Reserve Mining Company's iron ore pelletizing plant established that rubber-lined balling dm produce a green pellet equivalent in quality to those produced in conventional balling drums equipped with reciprocating cutter bars. The flexing action of the rubber liner prevents concentrate buildup in the drums, eliminating the need for a cutter bar. Advantages of the rubber-lined drum includes a reduction in maintenance and operating manpower, reduced bentonite consumption with less drum surging, reduced power consumption, and improved drum on time.

Relative to slender pillars, larger size pillars exhibit improved strata control. Fly ash, though traditionally treated as a waste product, is emerging as an alternate engineering material. This paper deals with the development of a strong fly ash composite material with additives. The geotechnical properties of this fly ash composite were determined and used to trap model core pillars, which resemble squat pillars. The trapped samples were tested under uni-axial loading in the laboratory and the results showed higher load-bearing capacity of the model core pillars. The reinforced fly ash composites provide lateral confinement and exhibit improved post- failure behaviour of the model cores.

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing technique whereby a stream of metal powder is consolidated by a focused laser beam on the surface of a substrate or engineering component. The interaction zone between the laser beam and powder particles is scanned superficially, generating tracks of deposited material. The tracks are overlapped in a deposition strategy in accordance with slices of a CAD model. Successive layers of material are built up to fabricate a near net shape part. In this work, the technique is used to fabricate metal matrix composites (MMCs) by using an elementally blended feedstock combining metal and ceramic powders in the melt pool, which melt and solidify to create the required morphology. Ti6Al4V + TiC MMCs were produced with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% reinforcing ceramic, and Zr + TiC MMCs were fabricated with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% TiC. The deposited thin walls were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and indentation testing. In both systems, the analysis revealed the presence of partially melted TiC particles embedded in the metal matrix along with fine dendrites of re-solidified ceramic. The dendritic structures in the Ti-based composites were confirmed as TiC, whereas in the Zr-based composite the Zr metal reacts with theTiC to form ZrC, leaving Ti in solid solution. Both the MMCs show an increase in microhardness with increasing ceramic (carbide)content, reaching a peak HV0.1 value of 500 in the Zr- based MMC and HV0.1 of 550 in the Ti based MMC.

THE DeHoff method' of analysis of ellipsoids of constant shape provides a quantitative metallo-graphic technique whereby the actual size distribution of the ellipsoids may be determined from polished and etched random planar sections. This method provides a useful metallographic tool since it appears to be the only method available for determining the size distribution of nonequiaxed second-phase particles. This method, however, assumes that the type of particle being studied is known to be either oblate or prolate of a fixed minor to major axis ratio, q. This, in general, means that one assumes either oblate or prolate ellipsoids of a given q and checks the total volume and surface area of the second phase as determined from the particle size distribution to values of these quantities determined by other techniques. Suitable check methods may be point counting, lineal fraction, and areal fraction methods for obtaining the total volume and the Smith and Guttman2 method of intercepts for obtaining the total surface area. If the initial guess at particle shape and q were incorrect, i.c., the volume and surface information obtained from the particle size distribution data does not agree with those values obtained by other techniques, another assumption must be made and the particle size dist distribution must be recalculated. A current study in this laboratory has involved a large number of these calculations. To facilitate the handling of the calculations, the DeHoff method was programmed in the FORTRAN language for an IBM 1620 computer. The purpose of this note is to briefly describe this program. The complete program along with a list of variable names, a sample input, and a sample output may be obtained from the senior author. Basically, the program provides for the calculation of particle size distributions for a series of q values for both oblate and prolate ellipsoids for each set of input data. The total volume of second-phase particles per unit volume are calculated for each calculated particle size distribution. The output of the program is arranged to allow a rapid comparison of the calculated volume and surface values to data obtained by independent check measurements. A condensed flow chart of the program in the notation of DeHoff1 is given in Fig. 1 The calculation of the number of particles per unit volume in the jth size class, Ni, according to the DeHoff method' is: where k(q) is the shape-correction factor given by DeHoff as a function of q for both oblate and prolate ellipsoids, A is the size-class increment, k is the number of size classes, ni is the number of particles in the ith class on the planar measurement surface, and B(j,i) are the saltykov3 coefficients which correct for measurement surfaces which do not pass through the major and minor axes of the particles. The values of /3(j,i) are included as a two-dimensional array in the program. Particular values of k(q) are included in the program in increments of q of 0.05. The first calculation is carried out for q = 1 (spheres), the second for q = 0.95 oblate, the third for q = 0.95 prolate, and so forth. The number of q values chosen for the calculation is determined by a control card in the input for each set of data.

Some of the major challenges associated with underground mining at depth and/or under high extraction ratios are related to the resulting high stress levels, which can lead to the failure and collapse of the rock mass surrounding the excavations. Sudden and violent failures, which can have severe consequences, represent the highest degree of difficulty in terms of underground personnel exposure, erratic and unpredictable production, ground rehabilitation requirements, possible reserve losses and overall mining costs.

"Three major challenges for the mining industry are the minimization of energy use, water consumption and environmental impact. Therefore, any technique that reduces milling waste, decreases water usage and shrinks impact during mine life must be considered a major innovation in mining.To these ends, one of the most impactful developments in mining within the last 10 years has been the expanded use of high technology sensors to create preconcentrations of mine ore (Jönsson, 2014). The most common sensors used are charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras, that allow through a red, green and blue (RGB) coloring system, the separation of minerals with different colors, tones and, in many cases, with differences in brightness.More recently, the development and use of dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) to enable the separation by atomic density of the constituent minerals within a given rock has become a reality. Within this work, a rapid bibliographical review of the CCD and DE-XRT methods and examples of their usage within mining and the industrial minerals sector are presented.Sensor-based sorting in miningAutomation within mining is one of the industry’s current goals. Sensors of various kinds have been used as steps toward automation in recent years, from improving the safety and productivity of haul trucks through the use of cameras and global positioning satellites (GPS), to the divination of slope failures. Just as with other mining areas, sorting has improved dramatically and made great steps toward automation in recent years (Wotruba et al., 2014).Sensor-based sorting (SBS) uses spectromatic sensors to identify intrinsic characteristics of particles and separates them by either mechanical or pneumatic means into different product streams (Wotruba et al., 2014). SBS can be used with great effectiveness to improve gravimetric beneficiation through the selective separation or preconcentration of run of mine ores (ROM)."

In order to produce the iron and steel products with high quality and decrease the output of steel tailings, the quality of molten iron is a critical factor for iron and steel companies, especially the content of sulfidic in molten iron. Hot metal pre-treatment, an important and effective method to desulphur, is widely used in steel production. Millions of tons of slag from desulphurization and slag skimming are produced each year in China, and many more times this amount is stored in slag dams because of the lack of effective means to deal with it. In order to achieve the goal of sustain-able development, recycling these slag becomes necessary. The main objective of this paper is to study the composition characteristics of slag that from desulphurization and slag skimming. The sample was obtained from Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corporation, processed by hot metal pre-treatment. In this study, the chemical components and the mineral compositions of sample were tested. The results of chemical components and iron chemistry phase analysis showed that the iron and sulphide content in this sample were high, and the iron products existed mainly in the form of magnetite, metallic iron, ferrosilite. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicated that the sample included metallic iron, ferrate, wustite, metasilicate, aluminate, aluminosilicate, white lime and soon. Grading magnetic separation test work showed that magnetic separation was an effective method to recovery iron products and decrease the sulphide content in concentrate, and the tailing could be used as the raw material or padding in cement production.
