The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal leads to the conclusion that study of the technical consideration, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem. Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude in certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

Mathematical solutions to complex mine ventilation problems are possible, but often the airway network is so complex that the mathematical solution becomes tedious and impractical. A fluid network analyzer, designed and built for analyzing mine ventilation problems has been in service at the Bureau of Mines' Pittsburgh station for approximately nine years. Using this analogue as a model, the mine ventilation network is simulated electrically by a combination of series and parallel circruits laid out to conform with actual mine airways. A tungsten filament lamp, referred to as a Fluistor, is used to simulate mine airway resistance. With the analogue ventilation model established, voltages of the proper amplitude to represent ventilating pressures are impressed across the circuit at points where mine fans and airshafts are located. Comparison of mathematical solutions of complex systems against analogue results showed a maximum variance of 3% for pressures and 2% for quantities. An electrical fluid network analyzer, designed and built especially for analyzing mine ventilation distribution problems, has been in service at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, for approximately nine years. It is a nonlinear, low voltage, fluid network analyzer of the type developed by the late Malcolm S. McIlroy, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Cornell University, who cooperated with G. E. McElroy, of the Bureau of Mines, in adapting the instrument to mine ventilation systems. Several modifications have been made since the original installation, but a considerable part of this paper is drawn from G. E. McElroy's original description of the analogue.' The analysis of water or gas distribution systems2,3 led to the development of this type of network analyzer. Several similar units are now employed by utility companies for this purpose; however, the Bureau of Mines unit is the only one designed specifically for mine airflow problems. Other airflow analogues employing a similar principle have been used at the Central Research Station of the Netherlands State Mines,4 in England,5 and in South Africa.6 Information on these devices indicated they were somewhat inflexible because commercial lamps with a sufficient range of resistance are difficult to obtain. Computers for mine ventilation analysis have been developed in Germany which instead of lamps use a variable resistance to adjust for turbulent flow laws. These units are expensive, but excellent results have been reported in their application. THE ANALYZER Theory of Application: As airflow generally follows the law of turbulent fluid flow, resistance to flow is nonlinear; consequently, the problem has been to find a nonlinear resistance element of suitable range that can be used for electrically simulated airflow. Tungsten filament lamps operated on alternating or direct current approximate the square-law resistance characteristics of mine airflow over a large range below maximum or rated voltage; that is, the voltage drop varies approximately as the square of the current. Consequently, the heart of the network analyzer is a nonlinear resistor known as a Fluistor, which is simply a custom-made low voltage, tungsten filament lamp that is available in a progressive series of relative resistance values ranging from 0.05 to 500 in nominal 5% steps. However, variations in manufacturing large groups result in differences of 1 to 3%, but series arrangements required for high-loss branches can be matched within about 1%. Utilizing a combination of Fluistors and load circuits, the mine ventilation system is duplicated electrically. Intake load circuits are connected from power intake to primary points of the circuit network; segments of unregulated flow along intakes and returns are represented by Fluistors, regulated splits and leakage paths are represented by load circuits and Fluistors of proper capacity; and mine exhausts are connected to ground from the last point of the network to complete the circuit. For the special purpose of representing booster fans or natural draft conditions, boosters or separate source circuits are provided that can be inserted between any two points of a network to increase voltage to the required value. The SRS-1200 concept came about following the recommendations from the Board of Inquiry into the 1994 Moura No 2 mine disaster with the aim of having a system to remove personnel from an unsafe environment underground via a shaft where no other means of escape is possible. It is a mobile rescue unit that utilises a winding system to operate a man cage. It can descend the cage up to 1200 m into a vertical shaft. This operation is managed from the winder control compartment located on the non-driver side at the rear of the vehicle.

Os compósitos poliméricos com fibras naturais são geralmente fabricados com a técnica de moldagem por compressão a frio ou a quente, na qual as fibras são as compactadas com resina em um molde. Em geral, a matriz deve ser feita de um aço resistente à fratura, à fadiga e dureza adequada, pois grandes esforços são utilizados na prensagem do material entre 100 a 300°C. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da temperatura na dureza dos aços SAE 8620 e SAE 8640. Amostras foram submetidas ao tratamento térmico de têmpera a 900oC e revenimento na faixa de 150 a 650ºC. Posteriormente foram lixadas e polidas conforme os métodos convencionais de preparação metalográfica. Na revelação da microestrutura utilizou-se o reagente Nital 2%. Para avaliar a influência da temperatura foram feitas medidas de dureza Rockwel C e análises microestruturais das amostras. Os resultados mostraram que os materiais apresentam uma microestrutura típica de martensita revenida após têmpera e revenido. No entanto, a dureza é superior a 45 RC somente para o aço SAE 8640 até revenimento de 350°C. Conclui-se, portanto, que apenas o aço SAE 8640 é adequado para fabricação de moldes para moldagem a quente de compósitos poliméricos.

As equipes de manutenção das pontes de Vega não possuíam uma ferramenta de armazenamento de dados de longo prazo, que permitisse analise de falhas e a avaliação das condições operacionais necessárias à manutenção preditiva. Com essa deficiência, as condições de ocorrência de paradas não programadas eram favorecidas. Fazia-se necessário uma ferramenta que permitisse o desenvolvimento de aplicações mais sofisticadas para monitoramento de equipamentos das Pontes Rolantes, além de que todo diagnóstico realizado era localmente na ponte e com as informações atuais (posteriores ao evento ocorrido). Após a implantação os ganhos foram satisfatórios, reduziu-se o tempo de atendimento das ocorrências, a planta se adequou ao padrão mundial de Prevenção de Fatalidades do grupo ArcelorMittal, reduzindo o trabalho em altura, exposição do executante ao risco, custo de manutenção e quantidade de paradas não planejadas, além de suportar o foco na manutenção preventiva e preditiva.

CHEMICAL methods, based on the relative rates of oxidation of fusain, bright coal, and dull coal by nitric acid, have been devised to determine these coal components.1-4 Results obtained by oxidation methods for fusain have been checked against results obtained from microscopic methods5, 6on duplicate samples of the same coals, but to the author's knowledge this has not been done for bright and dull coal components. For this reason it is not certain that the two methods of analysis identify essentially the same chemical or physical units. It would be highly desirable to see results of the application of both methods to duplicate samples, but in the absence of any such data the author has attacked the problem indirectly. From the U. S. Bureau of Mines samples were obtained of three Alabama coals which the USBM had analyzed optically and reported on over the past 30 years. These samples were subjected to analyses by oxidation rate methods. Results of this work, and comparisons with the USBM analyses, have been published." This was the first indirect approach to the problem. The present report attempts a second indirect approach by way of internal validation. By nitric oxidation samples of two whole coals were carefully analyzed for fusain, bright coal, and dull coal. One coal was analyzed in duplicate. Duplicate portions of each of the coals were divided into three density fractions by means of heavy liquids. A duplicate portion of one of the coals was divided by sieving into three size fractions. Each fraction was analyzed by oxidation and its percentage composition calculated in terms of fusain, bright coal, and dull coal. Because the weight percent of each fraction was known, a material balance calculation for the whole coal was also made. The resulting reconstituted analysis of the whole coal could be compared to that determined by direct analysis. In addition, specific reaction rate constants were determined for each component and for each whole coal or fraction. Arbitrary reactivity indexes were calculated by dividing by 100 the sum of the products of the percent of each component in the coal and its specific reaction rate constant. The resulting figure was an average reactivity index for each coal or fraction. Weighting the reactivity indexes for each fraction by the percent of the fraction in the coal gave a reactivity index for each whole coal which could be compared to that calculated directly from the whole coal analysis. If oxidation analyses really delineate definite physical entities within the coal, or even definite groups of similar entities, reconstituted analyses calculated from fraction analyses should check closely those made of the whole coal. It probably is true that optical methods identify and describe a greater variety of components than do chemical methods and that variations are wide in the appearance and quantity of those components identified optically. Chemical methods based upon differences in oxidation reaction rates would of necessity be less discriminating, as between similar components, than would optical methods. The procedures followed for oxidizing the samples, analyzing the residues, plotting and calculating the percentage of each component, and calculating its specific reaction rate constant have been fully described.'-' In brief the method originally proposed by Fuchs et al.1 for the determination of fusain consists of the oxidation of small samples of coal in boiling 8N nitric acid in a condenser-fitted flask. After boiling for periods of 1/2 to 4 hr, the unoxidized residue is filtered and washed. The washed residue is treated with normal sodium hydroxide, diluted, and allowed to stand for several hours. The resulting brown liquor is removed, and the filtered residue dried, weighed, ignited, and weighed again. The ash-free residue is expressed as a percent of original dry, ash-free coal. The percent residue is plotted against time, and the extrapolation of this line to zero time gives the percentage of dry ash-free fusain present in the original sample. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a estratégia adotada para a migração dos sistemas de otimização de processo dos três Altos Fornos da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. O desenvolvimento dos novos sistemas é baseado no Plano Diretor de Tecnologia de Automação (PDTA) que definiu a arquitetura, tecnologias e elaborou o Framework como base das aplicações. Para a migração dos sistemas foi elaborada uma especificação detalhada de todos os módulos e funcionalidades existentes, permitindo dessa forma a criação de uma camada com as principais regras de negócios relativas ao processo para serem reutilizados em todos os Altos Fornos. Essa camada deu origem ao Framework dos Altos Fornos. Os resultados obtidos já podem ser vistos nos três sistemas migrados para a nova plataforma, com um alto desempenho e estabilidade, garantido dessa forma a segurança operacional objetivada.

In galena flotation, lead ethyl xanthate, Pb(EtX)2, is precipitated and is physically adsorbed in the form of multilayers on the chemically adsorbed first layer of Pb(EtX). 1,2) The solid particles are coated with layers of Pb(EtX)2 in heterogeneous manner over surface areas possessing both anodic and cathodic character (3,4) It is anticipated that the mode of formation of Pb(EtX)2 and the number of ions present, together with stable or unstable by-product species, have great influence on the surface characteristics of galena. The information obtained from a study of these parameters may have important practical applications in flotation. Lead ethyl xanthate is sparingly soluble in water. The metal and xanthate ions released to the aqueous solution during its dissolution undergo various types of reactions depending upon the pH values of the system. Extensive work (5,6) has been carried out to elucidate the mechanism involved in acid decomposition of xanthate ions. Different decomposition paths (7,8) have been proposed for the hydrolytic decomposition of xanthate in neutral and alkaline solutions, The concentrations of lead ions vary due to a number of chemical reactions, regulated by the pH and the temperature of the bulk phase. The hydrophobic character of Pb(EtX)2 may change with the nature of chemical reactions. Some of the numerous by-product species in solution may adsorb on the solid and change the properties of surface film either favourably or adversely. The flotation performance of galena, therefore, may depend to a considerable extent on the physical and chemical stabil¬ity of Pb(EtX)2 layers. Since little work has been reported in literature dealing with the stability of Pb(EtX)2 and its correlation with the flotation of galena, attempts have been made In this study to evaluate the behaviour of freshly formed Pb(EtX)2 in aqueous systems at various pH values.

This paper covers some problems of treatment of complex gold ores and concentrates containing copper, lead, zinc, antimony and uranium. All these metals may present in ores both as major and associated components. The paper suggests recommendations for early determination of relative value of the metals in ores, which largely contribute to the selection of concentration and metallurgical flow sheets. The focus of this work is on treatment of complex ores in gold plants. The metal extraction technologies used by such gold plants are typically aimed at maximum gold recovery. Therefore, production of base metals as by-products requires significant updating of the existing process flow sheets based on economic, environmental and other considerations. At the same time, cooperation between gold plants and base-metal plants is of great importance. This paper provides an overview of worldwide existing and innovative processes of base metals extraction from complex and refractory gold ores.

The Bureau of Mines conducted oil-displacement tests in the laboratory with three water-in-oil and five oil-in-water emulsions that were created with ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kHz and an acoustic intensity of approximately 100 watts per cm2. Emulsions of either crude oil or kerosine, brine, and 112 to 2 percent emulsifier were formed during 30 seconds of acoustic irradiation. Results indicate that ultrasonic energy induces greater and more uniform dispersion of one liquid in another in the presence of small amounts of chemi¬cal emulsifiers. When the emulsions were injected as a buffer slug before waterflooding, recovery of the oil-in-place was 8 to 22 percent greater than with conventional waterflooding in the test specimens, regardless of the con¬tinuous phase (oil or brine). The emulsions do not appear to be applicable to the Appalachian area; however, because the oilfields are too "tight," the clays in the formation remove the emulsifier from the displacing fluid, and not enough additional oil is produced, compared with recovery using conventional waterflooding, to warrant the increased operating costs.

Indium recovery from liquid crystal display (LCD) waste has been the subject of over 50 peer reviewed publications over the last decade; however, the first commercial recycling facilities are just beginning to be built. The low value of indium in the LCD screen material has posed a major challenge to would-be recyclers. Uncommon material combinations and geometries have further challenged development. A review of published literature regarding extraction of indium from LCDs will be presented and themes of advantageous processes will be highlighted. Barriers to rapid expansion of any recycling technology in the form of manufacturin gpractices, environmental regulations, and geographic constraints will be discussed.

The pyrite-sphalerite-galena and barite orebodies at the Rosebery mine are concordant with the shale host rock and have been deformed into one system of folds with an associated axial plane cleavage. The folds are tight and overturned with east-dipping axial planes. Folds in the sulphide ore are commonly disharmonic, particularly between adjacent bands of different composition.Concentric style folds occur in the competent bands, e.g. pyrite-rich bands. Similar style folds are predominant in the less competent sphalerite-galena-rich bands and also in the shale of the host rock. The trends and plunges of the fold hinge-lines are variable but axial planes are of reasonably constant orientation throughout the mine area. The folds in the orebodies are of limited axial extent, approximating to conical folds, and are arranged in en echelon patterns. The fold system was possibly formed in one period of folding by heterogeneous strain that may have been caused by the presence of a mass of tectonically mobile sulphide ore. Lineations parallel to the ore/host rock contacts appear to reflect movement between the ore and the host rock during folding.

Truck-and-shovel operations have an inherent ?looseness? to them, unlike manufacturing or processing operations where production components are tightly coupled (through conveyors, material flow in pipes, assembly lines, and so on). Effective monitoring and control of truck-and-shovel operations requires a combination of both information systems and performance management. Production monitoring systems can impact operations at three levels: minute-by-minute decisions during the shift, procedures, and policies. The technology of production monitoring ranges from real-time data collection to manual entry of time card data into a computer. Time card information is too coarse to effectively manage a multi-million dollar fleet of mobile equipment, so a higher level of production monitoring is required. People issues affect whether the implementation will be a success or a disappointment. Considerations that affect the people issues are discussed, including common obstacles, and key success factors. A balanced scorecard approach must be used, since uni-dimensional measures of performance like tons produced give no indication of whether the production was achieved at the expense of another factor.

Barite and Fe-Mn-oxide deposits that occur along faults in the Southern California Borderland formed by low-temperature hydrothermal processes. The Borderland region consists of block-faulted continental crust within the broad transform boundary of the North American plate. The fault-bounded basins are anoxic and partially filled with hemipelagic and turbidite sediments. Barite was collected from four dredges and a submersible dive (DSV4-355) in the southern California Borderland, and was collected from two sea-cliff sites along the Palos Verdes Headlands near Los Angeles. Barite at these seven locations occurs along strike-slip and basin-margin faults from the shoreline to 1800 m water depth. Submersible observations showed a series of mounds up to 10-m high composed of friable, white barite associated with diffusely venting milky fluid; the mounds support large benthic colonies, including tube worms (Lonsdale, 1979). Barite samples recovered from dredges are brown, green, and white and range from porous, vuggy fragments to massive fragments cut by banded barite veins. Samples from two dredge sites contain fossil worm tubes 1-3 mm in diameter and >10 cm long. All the samples are nearly pure barite, with only minor to trace amounts of other minerals. Chemical analyses show 94-98 wt. % BaSO4, low total rare-earth element (REE) contents (<45 ppm), Sr contents from <2 to 10,000 ppm, and Hg contents up to 1 ppm. Chondrite and shale-normalized REE patterns show light REE enrichments and large positive Eu anomalies. These REE pattern characteristics are typical of marine hydrothermal fluids and minerals. Sulfur isotope ratios (d34SCTD) from +21.6 to +67.4? range from seawater values (+21?) to exceptionally high positive values. Strontium isotope ratios are lower than the modern seawater ratio as well as the seawater ratio that existed at the time of deposition of the host rocks.

Shearer drums are a critical component in the overall performance of coal shearers, with the cutting performance depending very much on the disposition of cutter tools on the drums (the tool-lacing arrangement). A series of practical and theoretical studies has been undertaken to investigate aspects of shearer drum vibration in terms of circumferential pick spacing. A number of commercially available drums were redesigned and the lacing patterns compared with those of the original drums under near-uniform conditions. Mine trials were carried out at the Middle Anatolian lignite mine in Turkey with drums fitted on Eickhoff type EDW-230 double-ranging drum shearers. It was found that the performance of drums could be improved if the concept of circumferential pick spacing was taken into account in CAD packages along with the existing design parameters such as cutting rate, reduced dust, low pick consumption and low down-time

On January 1, 1961 there were 311 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total crude-oil throughput capacity of slightly more than 10 million barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines&apos; annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents net increases of one in the number of plants and 109 thousand barrels per day in total capacity. Contributing to this increase was the completion of two new plants, one in Hawaii and another in Michigan, during the year. At the beginning of 1961 the industry was building facilities which will increase this overall crude capacity by 36,500 barrels per day. As part of its building program, it was also replacing 329,000 barrels per day of its present capacity. Of the total 10 million barrel per day installed capacity, the industry reported 380,000 barrels per day as being shut-down on January 1, 1961. This included 11,500 barrels per day considered inoperable without extensive reconditioning.

Recent advances in personal computer technology allow movies of various types to be made and displayed on PC and Macintosh computers. An interesting application of this movie technology is animation of computerized geological models. These movies, which can be most easily constructed along rows, columns, and benches of block models, allow an ore body to be more easily and quickly visualized than the traditional method of flipping back and forth through various sections.

A campaign to perform characterization tests in a TankCell®-300 flotation cell installed at Chuquicamata Codelco&apos;s concentrator was conducted. The campaign included integrated gas dispersion measurements (gas velocity radial mapping and single point gas holdup and bubble size) and determination of frother concentration. Cell streams were sampled to assess metallurgical performance at the same time. The experimental program was designed to establish the bubble surface area flux operating range and its effect on performance, and the effect of using longer residence times and of a device designed to enhance mixing in the collection zone (FlowBooster(TM)). The gas dispersion results and their relationship to metallurgical performance are discussed.
