Photoelectronic radiation detectors may be conveniently classified as homogeneous intrinsic, homogeneom extrinsic, or junction type. Highly photosensitive homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors may be prepared from a number of different II-VI, III-V, or IV materials. Such materials require the presence of specific imperfections that can act as sensitizing centers to provide long majority carrier lifetime. Homogeneous extrinsic photodetectors are of interest primarity for infrared detection, and consist principully of germaniuim and silicon with suitable inpurities. A vaviety of junction photodetectors exist, with silicon us the most common material for them all. The following extrema in performance are found: 1) highest photoconductivity gain in homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors; 2) smallest response time (highest frequency response) in p-i-n junctions; 3) largest gain-bandwidth product in avalanche diodes. ALTHOUGH the total number of materials exhibiting photoconductivity effects is very large, only a relatively few of these have appropriate properties for a practical photoelectronic radiation detector. In fact if one surveys the commercial detectors currently available, one finds that the field is dominated by some ten or fewer materials. These are summarized in Table 1 in terms of the other important variable in detector fabrication, the structure of the material, i.e., whether the material is used as a single crystal or in polycrystalline form, and whether the material is used as a homogeneous detector or whether the detector depends upon the existence of a junction or barrier in the material. The principal wavelength range for each type of material is also shown, together with an indication of the utilization of intrinsic or extrinsic excitation. For the purposes of the present comparison of various detectors, it will be convenient to discuss two main topics: homogeneous photodetectors and junction photodetectors. The performance of a photoelectronic radiation detector is measured in terms of two parameters: the photoconductivity gain, and the response time of the detector. A convenient figure-of-merit is given by the ratio of gain to response time, often called the gain-bandwidth product. The photoconductivity gain is a device parameter since it varies in many cases with the applied voltage and the detector geometry, and should be distinguished from the actual photosensitivity of the material involved. This photosensitivity can be conveniently given as the product of free carrier lifetime and mobility in the material. The photoconductivity gain is defined as the number of charge carriers which pass between the electrodes per second for each photon absorbed per second, where G is the photoconductivity gain, is the pho-tocurrent in amperes, e is the electronic charge in coulombs, and F is the total number of electron-hole pairs created in the photo conductor per second by the absorption of light. The gain may also be expressed as the ratio of the lifetime of a free carrier to the transit time for that carrier, i.e., the time required for the carrier to move between the electrodes. For a material in which one-carrier conductivity dominates, where T is the lifetime of a free carrier, ttr is the transit time for this carrier, p is the carrier mobil-ity, V is the applied voltage, and L is the electrode spacing. From Eq. [2] it follows that the photoconductivity gain is proportional to the photosensitivity of the material (tP), the proportionality constant being The photosensitivity of a material, and hence the photoconductivity gain of a device utilizing the material, depends on the lifetime of the free carriers as a critical parameter. In a homogeneous material this lifetime is determined by the nature of imperfections in the material, and in an inhomogeneous material the lifetime is determined by the specific junction structure. The speed of response, the other basic photodetec-tor parameter, is determined by factors quite similar to those important for photoconductivity gain. Imperfections are of primary importance in homogeneous materials, and the structure of the junction is a determining factor in junction devices. For infrared detectors it has become common to define another quantity designed to indicate directly how effective the detector is in distinguishing between a small photoconductivity signal and random noise due to the detector and its environment. Four catalytic converters for diesel exhaust systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in reducing the amount of harmful substances discharged into the air. Tests were conducted with four different catalytic converter designs, using two diesel engines as exhaust gas generators. (Of the four noble metal catalytic converters, three are commercially available.) Testing showed that the catalysts varied widely in oxidation efficiency at light to intermediate engine loads, but that all were very effective in reducing emissions of CO, HC, aldehydes, and odor intensity at heavy loads (engine operating modes resulting in high exhaust temperatures). Particulate loading, particulate size, and NOx emissions were generally unaffected by any of the catalysts. The catalysts had one ad-verse effect on exhaust quality--increased sulfate emissions. Because of the potential problem of sulfate emissions, the exclusive use of catalytic reactors for emissions reduction does not appear to be satisfactory. However, when used with a means for subsequent removal of sulfates, a catalyst can function as a key component in an emissions control system for diesel engines operated in underground mines.

A method is presented for the linear evaluation of adsorption data using the equations dC = Ae-rv dv and v = [jT] - q, where dC is the phase composition increment, v a calculated parameter, T the absolute temperature, and A, r, h, g, and q the constants. The value of v is calculated from the composition C for both the adsorption surface and the immersion phase. A plot of v for each phase on Cartesian coordinates results in straight line graphs. With temperature variation, a plot of v versus,[ ] also results in straight line graphs. The equations are applicable to electronic and salt equilibria.

Three case histories are provided of recent projects in the United States: the sealing of a major inflow into a quarry, the improvement of a highly loaded bridge pier foundation, and the installation of high capacity micropiles. Emphasis is placed on problem assessment and execution verification.

Optimisation projects are regularly undertaken without knowing the root cause of an issue. It is all well and good to trial a multitude of flotation reagents, change the operating characteristics of your flotation cells, or add more media into your ball mills, but time and again, root cause analysis traces issues back to the performance of hydrocyclones. In JKTech's experience, hydrocyclones are poorly operated and maintained (in both primary grinding and regrind circuits), exacerbating issues that many operations commonly experience.Recent case studies are presented where JKTech has been engaged to improve the process only to discover that the hydrocyclones were the main issue. At one operation it was found that the hydrocyclone feed density gauge was reading significantly lower to the actual density. Following re-calibration of the gauge, and with further improvement of cyclone operational and design parameters using JKSimMet, a significantly sharper efficiency curve was achieved. This resulted in improvements to downstream recoveries while alleviating pumping capacities that were previously constrained by fines and water caught up in recirculating loads.Several other case studies are presented which may seem to be relatively basic, but many basics seem to be getting lost in the day-to-day responsibilities of the modern plant metallurgist. Simple fixes to hydrocyclones can result in significant production increases, but more focus is needed in monitoring these to sustain the benefits.CITATION:Wong, B and Vizcarra, T G, 2018. Para un mayor avance en su producción, las minas de cielo abierto u "open it" de Marcona, utilizan unidades de mayor tamaño en el transporte, puesto que reduce el costo unitario del trabajo. En este aspecto, el objetivo del trabajo describe el uso de máquinas comprendidas para su uso, rendimiento de costo, pala, control de tiempo, tiempo de operaciones y el trabajo con traillas dentro de esta modalidad. etc. Como primer punto, las máquinas cargadoras, las palas mecánicas, etc, incrementan su tamaño constantemente y como tal, las operaciones de transporte cambiaron de uso de ferrocarril a de los camiones con 10,15, 20. 30 y 50 tonelajes por viaje. Posteriormente con el advenimiento de motores diesel, diseño, construcción, perforación y transporte de las máquinas cargadoras, se creó una minería de cielo abierto más económica, flexible y eficiente. En este punto, las operaciones estacionarias, sea con palas o las perforadoras de voladura, utilizaron preferiblemente la energía eléctrica que simplifica la operación y facilita el mantenimiento y las reparaciones. Mientras que las operaciones de perforación, voladura, carguío y acarreo se analiza las características de toneladas rotas por perforación, los cálculos de sobreperforación, los materiales explosivos usados, respectivamente. En cuanto la extracción de palas y volquetes, se evalúa la calidad del disparo, número de voloquetes, capacidad horaria. Finalmente en el trabajo con traillas, se evalúa la influencia del costo de las demoras relativas en las palas y los volquetes, pérdidas de la capacidad potencial de la pala cuando hay insuficiencia de volquetes, asi como las variaciones de la capacidad según la distancia de acarreo.

In late July 1985, air samples from a sealed portion of the Quinland coal mine in West Virginia showed the presence of carbon monoxide (CO). Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel concluded that a fire was burning behind the seals. Since an imminent danger existed, the mine operator was given a closure order. The gases behind the seals were monitored and almost 2 million ff of carbon dioxide (C02) gas was pumped into the sealed area to stabilize the environment. Sixteen days after the closure order was issued, MSHA allowed the mine to return to production. Approximately 1 yr later, mine management submitted a seal breaching request to MSHA in order to drive a set of entries to further develop the mine. The Bureau of Mines established a sampling strategy and monitored gases from behind the sealed area during the breaching operation until the atmosphere was safe. This report is an account of the seal breaching conducted by the mine, MSHA, and the Bureau. The logistics of this event, the sampling strategy, and the equations applied could be used by the mining industry in future breachings or mine recovery operations. Time to reenter the area was calculated by using the methane (CH4) concentrations sampled at the discharge of the seals. Tracer gas was used to verify the ventilation flows through the area.

This report represents the first comprehensive accounting of lode mining sites in the Sheep Mountain mining district, Custer County, Idaho. Twenty-one mine and prospect locations have been added to the Bureau's Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) data base as a result of initial phases of a mineral appraisal of the River of No Return Wilderness; previously known locations were checked and the updated information added to the data base. The district's deposits are mainly confined to metasedimentary xenoliths in granodiorite and quartz monzonite. Those deposits in the north and west parts of the district are lead-silver-zinc replacement veins in dominantly calcareous facies; those in the southern part of the district are polymetallic fissure-veins containing pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, and sphalerite hosted by micaceous schist and phyllite. The dominant structural trend in the southern part of the district is northwesterly and on strike with major deposits in the adjacent Seafoam mining district.

Este programa de fabricación de vehículos sin carriles lo construye GHH STERKRADE, cuya eficacia de repuestos, cubre casi todas las aplicaciones, excepto los trabajos de perforación. Así, los vehículos sin carriles, sobre neumáticos conquistan un lugar en la minería gracias a su movilidad con plena independencia. En ese sentido, el objeto del texto es describir la factibilidad del método LHD, cuya aplicación se extendió por las minas técnicamente muy desarrolladas de la minería metálica y de la potasa para alcanzar posteriormente también a la minería de los países menos desarrollados y a otras ramas de la minería como la del carbón y la construcción de túneles.

A Usiminas, maior siderúrgica latino-americana fornecedora de aços planos, tem dedicado grandes esforços para oferecer materiais mais adequados para as diferentes demandas do mercado, desenvolvendo novos tipos de aços para utilização em carrocerias veiculares. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o comportamento de dois produtos Usiminas, o aço DP780 galvanizado por imersão a quente e o aço TRIP780 eletrogalvanizado, ambos com espessura de 1,50 mm, revestimento zinco puro e camada de 50 g/m² por face, com base em análises metalográficas, ensaios de tração, ensaios de estampagem e ensaios Bake Hardening (BH) e Aging Index (AI). Os resultados destas avaliações mostraram que os aços TRIP780 e DP780 tiveram performances excelentes em todos os modos de estampagem avaliados, além de boa capacidade de endurecimento após pintura (efeito BH). Tratam-se, portanto, de boas opções para aplicação em peças da carroceria, principalmente em componentes que requeiram elevada resistência mecânica.

"The collection and treatment of WEEE has recently become mandatory in Europe and is now being organized. As the first step in current treatment processes is manual dismantling, we decided to investigate the development of an entirely automatic WEEE treatment procedure using physical separation techniques so as to limit manual sorting to the removal of hazardous components. Our approach was to test different wet and dry physical separation methods on bulk WEEE; i.e. gravity separation (jig and pneumatic table), electric conductivity separation (eddy currents), and particle shape separation (Lavodune classifier and vibrating helical conveyors). The results enabled us to determine a global treatment flowsheet of shredding, electromagnetic separation, eddy current separation, screening (2 mm), sink&float separation (d=1), and jigging. All the end products, except for the fine fraction, have possible recycling outlets. Batches of WEEE can thus be treated automatically once the problem of non-ferrous wires is resolved.IntroductionAccording to Ademe (French Agency for Environment and Energy Management; www.ademe.fr), France's annual production of WEEE is between 1.7 and 2.0 million tonnes. This waste, although of very varied composition, consists mainly of plastics and metals, and its collection and treatment has been mandatory in France since 2006; the modalities are gradually becoming organized. Existing treatment processes rely on a first step of manual dismantling which, though essential for removing dangerous components from the WEEE (e.g. batteries, cathode-ray tubes, ink cartridges, etc.), also includes separating out the decimetre-size plastic parts and metal parts. No fully automatic process has yet been developed for this type of waste. Moreover, the dismantling units in Europe are highly subsidized and call upon social workers. As this situation is not conceivable for the long-term, it is obviously important to develop entirely automatic WEEE-treatment technologies based on physical separation techniques. This would limit manual sorting to the removal of toxic components."

The efforts of petroleum production engineers during the past year have largely concentrated upon ways and means of reducing operating investments and expenses in order that the industry may survive a period of low crude oil prices. Major progress was made in outlining and solving the technical problems pertinent to unit operation in order that executives and legal staffs may actually arrange operating contracts to effect unit operation. Consequent savings in development and operating costs, accompanied by increased recovery, will thus be obtained. Well spacing has received considerable constructive thought and study, from which practical results are assured in the near future. The control of edge and bottom waters has advanced in technique through the engineering work done in Yates, Hobbs and East Texas, and there is evidence of greater cooperative efforts between engineers to increase recovery from pools by mutual gas conservation. The use of pressure control by surface and bottom-hole chokes has become general practice to reduce gas-oil ratios. The study of bottom-hole pressures has led to new conceptions of proper utilization of reservoir energy and maintenance of pressure by natural means. Pressure gradients of flowing wells have been measured in practice and strides made to develop workable formulas for the flow of oil and gas mixtures through vertical pipes. The information thus obtained will permit the intelligent design of flow tubing combinations. Gas-lit and repressuring advancements have been few, due to overproduction from naturally flowing wells. Satisfactory unloading valves for gas-lift wells have been developed and consistent progress made in gas-lift displacement pumps. The necessity for producing wells at high rates of flow while producing large quantities of sand has resulted in radical changes in Christmas tree and separator designs for the Oklahoma City pool. The opening of wells to obtain potential production for proration purposes has been eliminated in the Yates and Hobbs pools by the application of engineering principles.

"World metallurgical coal imports totalled 110million tonnes in 1978. Of this amount, Japan imported 50 million tonnes, making it by far the largest and most important coking coal market . British Columbia and Alberta exported 12.0 million tonnes of coking coal in 1978, or 11% of the world total. Virtually all of these exports were directed to Japan, making up 22% of total imports.Some observers have suggested that because Japan is almost the exclusive buyer of British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coal, the benefits of the coal trade may be primarily on the side of the powerful Japanese buyers. Buttressing this suspicion is the fact that Japanese trading companies have taken substantial equity positions in B.C. coal mines, thus presenting the possibility of non-arms-Iength transfer arrangements. There is then at least some evidence to support the hypothesis that Canada's western coal producers receive prices that are less than would prevail in a more competitive market; that is, that they are exploited.This paper produces evidence that Canada's coals are not underpriced in respect to U.S. and world markets. The conclusion is drawn that British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coals receive prices that are equal to prices known to be competitively determined. This conclusion follows an in-depth analysis of prices, coal qualities and the economic characteristics of all major coals traded in the Japanese market. A by-product of the analysis is an equation capable of predicting the value of any metallurgical coal sold to Japanese buyers, or, for that matter, any buyer. Hopefully, this can be of some use to coal producers in developing their marketing strategies."

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

In the flash smelting of copper sulfide concentrates, the course of reactions from the burner tip, through flame "burn-out" (the point of oxygen depletion), to settled matte and slag is of particular interest in understanding the mechanisms of the process. Numerous reaction sets can be proposed to describe the chemical changes that might be taking place, but from outside the furnace no one set offers an obvious advantage in explaining the actual processes involved. Only a combination of mathematical modeling and flame and bath sampling can achieve this result. This paper shows that flash smelting, while still reasonably orderly, is a more complex process than suggested by the technical literature.

The direct cyanide leaching rate of gold from a gold calcine was only 71.33%, due to 19.51% of gold being encapsulated in the iron oxides. To enhance the cyanide leaching of gold, the calcine was pretreated with acid or alkali washing. The mechanisms by which acid and alkali pretreatment improve gold leaching from calcine are investigated through chemical analysis, XRD, and SEM-EDS characterization.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the analysis and eveluation of the field measurement results of a comprehensive ground control study conducted in a mechanized longwall coal mine in West Virginia. Emphasis is placed on the three basic ground control parameters: ground pressure, ground movement, and geomechanical properties. Specific topics include premining ground pressures, front-abutment pressure in the longwall panel, histories of pillar loading, differential roof-strata movement and bed separation, differential floor strata movement, entry roof-to-floor convergence, in situ moduli of rigidity of coal seam and roof and floor strata, and mechanical properties of coal and coal measures rocks.
