Utilizing thioglycolic acid (TGA) as a template and using structure-guided design, a molecular modelling approach has been used to design and screen appropriate dispersant for chalcopyrite. A series of organic dispersants based on a TGA substitution with hydroxyl and amino and sulfonic functional groups have been examined on chalcopyrite surface. 20 organic depressors of chalcopyrite have been investigated to study the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) of chalcopyrite depressors. For the chalcopyrite surface, depressor containing carboxyl and sulfonic group is generally stronger than the depressor containing hydroxyl group. Increasing the number of hydrophilic group can effectively enhance the inhibition. Increasing the number of Solidophilic group does not necessarily lead to enhanced inhibition ability; steric factor is one of the important factors to affect the interaction. Extension alkyl carbon chain length cannot enhance the interaction of depressors. Isomers principle as well as applies to the chalcopyrite depressor molecular design. Flotation verification tests further confirmes the accuracy of the molecular simulation. Through the Computer Aided Molecular Design (CAMD) technology, we can save enormous time and resources to design novel surfactants. This research and application will play a great significance role in sulfide flotation.

Analysis of discontinuous rock masses for engineering design purposes requires information about fracture characteristics. For such studies, fractures or other elements of the rock fabric (bedding, foliation, etc.) should be considered in a statistical manner because they generally have high frequencies of occurrence and are discontinuous over the design area. A practical design procedure includes defining structural domains as those areas which contain fractures with similar orientation patterns. Within a structural domain, the statistical distributions of fracture set characteristics (spacing, fracture density, dip, dip direction, etc.) may be computed from mapped data and then used to quantitatively describe the rock fabric. These distributions can then be randomly sampled (using Monte Carlo techniques) to simulate the rock fabric and to help define potential failure surfaces along fractures. 1 The prediction of failure geometries is an essential part of stability analyses used in designing rock slopes or underground openings. In current probabilistic design procedures, Monte Carlo techniques that rely upon the iterative generation and analysis of deterministic instability models do not incorporate spatial aspects of the random variation in fracture set characteristics, 1,2 but consider the characteristics to be spatially independent.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION To paraphrase comments made by Black and Hoek(1) on the status of rock mechanics, the general methods of applied science related to rock mechanics are: a. Observe the phenomena of nature as they occur and, wherever possible, quantify the observations. b. Propound a model or theory to explain the phenomena observed. c. Test and develop the theory by further experimentation in the laboratory and in the field. d. Use the theory developed to predict behavior in similar or extended circumstances. e. Insure by measured experiment and observation that the predictions made are valid, or that deviations from the predicted behavior can be accounted for. f. Modify the theory and practice as necessary, and continue the process until more general laws can be formulated and applied, with a useful degree of confidence, to practical problems. This paper will present an infant concept. It will, in fact, propound a possibly useful theory to help explain commonly observed phenomena. The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. The forces of nature have concentrated sand at various geographical locations that are being mined and processed for a large variety of industrial uses. While most operations serve a number of industries, this paper deals only with the foundry requirements. The forces that have decomposed a source rock, transported this material and redeposited it, have created two general types of sand. These types are classified as the (1) Lake and Bank Sands and (2) Silica Sands. The Lake and Bank sands will contain 92 to 94% Sio2 while silica sands are in excess of 98.5% Si02 and most of the producers wash these sands to up grade their products to 99.5% or better. Included in the Lake and Bank sand would be the river sands that are used primarily for construction purposes. The Foundry Industry is broken down into three types of castings : 1. Grey Iron Foundries The grey iron castings largest market is the automotive industry in Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. These castings are poured at temperatures ranging from 2400° to 2700°F. The Silica Sands or the Lake and Bank Sands will satisfy the requirements of the grey iron castings. There are 2 ½ to three million tons per year shipped from the state of Michigan far grey iron castings by the Lake and Bank Sand Producers.

The use of piezoelectric semiconducting materials for the fahrication of ultrasonic transducers has raised the upper fundamental frequency limit for transducers from about 200 mc to above 10 kmc, Several types of semiconductor transducer configurations have been proposed and examined experimentally. Depletion-layer transducers have been made and operated at frequencies below 1 kmc hut they appear to he better suited for operation at considerably higher frequencies around 10 knzc. Diffusion-layer transducers have been made and operated in the range 50 to 1000 mc and have exhihited considerably improved conversion losses and bandwidths compared with other transducers available in the frequency range. A variety of novel structures are possible using these new types of transducers, some of which could lead to substantial advances both in research and in the fabrication of ultrasonic delay lines and memory elements. THE field of ultrasonics today spans some five decades of the frequency spectrum from the audible to the kmc range and finds applications ranging from fundamental research into the atomic structure of matter to the degreasing of machine parts. To cover this wide range it has been necessary to develop a great many types of ultrasonic trandsucers utilizing a variety of materials and physical phenomena. The first ultrasonic transducers were made during World War I for a submarine-detection system. They consisted of plates of single-crystal quartz bonded between metal plates and were one of the first applications of the phenomenon of piezoelectricity discovered nearly 30 years previously. Despite the many advances which have been made in transducer technology, piezoelectric transducers using single-crystal quartz are still used almost exclusively for application above about 30 mc. Transducers at these frequencies are normally made in the form of thin quartz plates which are then bonded onto the medium in which the ultrasonic wave is to be propagated. The crystallographic orientation and geometry of these plates determines the type of wave generated and the way in which the efficiency of the electromechanical conversion varies with frequency. Analysis of the design parameters shows1 that the frequency of maximum efficiency (the fundamental or resonant frequency) is that frequency at which the transducer is approximately half the wavelength of the ultrasonic wave in the material. As the frequency increases, the ultrasonic wavelength, and therefore the optimum transducer thickness, decreases and in practice the fabrication of quartz transducers with fundamental freauencies above 100 mc becomes extremely difficult due to the extreme thinness required. For frequencies above 100 mc quartz transducers can be used in overtone-mode operation, and for very high frequencies (500 to 24,000 me) a technique using a quartz rod inserted in a high-Q microwave cavity4 is available. These techniques, however, exhibit comparatively low fractional bandwidths and rather poor conversion efficiencies. The present trend in ultrasonics is towards high frequencies and greater bandwidth to allow the use of shorter pulses which can give increased discrimination in radar-system delay lines and greater storage capacity in computer applications. Geophysical prospecting for ore has been more or less at a standstill during the present crisis owing to the lack of interest in base-metal exploration. A notable exception is the increased use of electrical and magnetic methods in prospecting for gold, the former in Canada, United States, Sumatra, Africa and Western Australia, and the latter on the Rand. This application to gold prospecting marks a forward step in ore prospecting because it is based upon mapping the geology instead of a direct location of the ore in question, as the amount of gold in an average gold ore is far too small to have any influence upon the physical properties of the rock in which it occurs. The development has thus gone in the same direction as geophysical prospecting for oil; that is, to find geological conditions that are genetically connected with the gold ore as exemplified by known occurrences. Naturally the success of this indirect prospecting depends upon two things: (1) the soundness of the geological conclusions upon which is based the hope of discovering new deposits, because a great many geological "set-ups" are barren, and (2) the ability of geophysical methods to help the geologist to collect the pertinent geological data within reasonable cost, after which favorable structures may be drilled or trenched. The first point is one to be considered by the mining geologist. In the vicinity of producing mines or promising prospects, the chances of finding ore in quartz veins and shear zones are great, and a survey giving the location of these features will materially guide both surface and underground exploration. Even in outside exploration the chances are sometimes favorable. As an example may be taken the Northeastern Ontario-Western Quebec gold zone. Large areas are here covered with glacial and post-glacial deposits and a simple study of available maps reveals the fact that less than 30 per cent of the area can ever be even preliminarily prospected by cominonly used prospecting methods, of which the pick and shovel are the main tools. An experimental mining project has been carried out in the Collie Basin to demonstrate the safe operation of total extraction mining techniques in the underground mines of the basin. To achieve this, it was necessary to design and install a means of controlling or removing groundwater so that goafing of the overlying strata could be safely achieved as part of the mining operation. The site chosen for the experiment was a triangular panel adjacent to Western No 6 (WD6) underground mine, which includes the 3 to 4 m thick Wyvern Seam beneath 130 to 180 m of overburden. The test area abuts a major fault on the downdip side. The overburden and underburden sequences include several horizons of permeable sandstones which form major aquifers. Water problems have long been recognized in all underground mines in the Collie Basin, and have previously prevented the successful application of total extraction mining. Following extensive hydrological investigations, dewatering and depressurization systems were designed to dewater the immediate roof aquifers and to depressurize aquifers higher in the sequence and in the floor. This would enable stable roof conditions to develop and controlled goafing to be achieved. The roof dewatering/depressurization procedure involved a combination of in-mine vertical roof drainage holes and conventional dewatering bores constructed from the ground surface above the mining trial area. The dewatering system was installed and operated for 29 months before the commencement of mining. Mining was eventually successfully completed in two trial panels using a retreat Wongawilli extraction system using bridge conveyors and continuous miners. Water inflow into the mine workings was channelled to a constructed sump area at the lowermost corner of the panel and pumped to the surface via vertical sump bores. The dewatering and depressurization measures adopted were successful in permitting the first controlled and systematic total extraction recovery of coal from the Collie Basin. This trial mining exercise demonstrated the potential for increasing substantially the recovery of coal from the Collie Basin, where previously recovery rates of around 30 percent from underground mining were commonplace, using only bord and pillar methods.

"Micropiles are small diameter cast insitu reinforced grouted piles and it has been effectively used in many applications of ground improvement. It increases the load carrying capacity of soil and reduces the settlement. It is also used in strengthening existing foundations. In this study, the effect of Solid and Hollow micropiles on the load carrying capacity of footing resting on sand is studied. The effects of solid Micropiles are investigated by conducting experimental model studies. The parameters involved in this study include the position of pile, pile length and pile spacing. Load test was carried out on a model footing resting on sand with solid and hollow micropiles. Load test trail is repeated for footing on Micropiles with varying lengths of 10, 20, and 30 times the diameter and spacing equal to 5, 4, 3, 2 times the diameter. The load-settlement behavior of each case is compared. Optimum length and optimum spacing of both the solid micropile and hollow micropile are determined. It is also observed that the effect of micropiles in the peripheral of footing resists lateral displacement of soil underneath the footing. The micropile beyond significant depth becomes redundant.INTRODUCTIONA micropile is a small diameter (less than 300 mm) drilled and grouted pile that is typically reinforced - FHWA-NHI 2005 (Federal Highway Administration-National Highway Institution). It is constructed by drilling a borehole, placing a steel reinforcing element into the borehole and grouting it. Hollow micropiles are typically reinforced by solid central bar that occupies about onethird of the hole volume. The grout is placed by gravity, under pressure methods or by a combination of both (post grouting). Thus, micropiles can be considered as small drilled-shafts that are specially drilled and grouted.Historically, micropiles have been introduced in Italy as a foundation system mainly for retrofitting and underpinning of structures that had sustained damage during World War II and access for conventional piling equipment was not possible (Bruce, 1988). The second generation of micropiles is a pressure grouted piles with a central mono all thread bar (with diameter up to 89 mm). They are installed by using either an open or cased hole drilling method.A new generation of micropiles, termed Grout injection bore micropiles (IBOR), was developed in the 1980s. The IBOR, currently named hollow bar micropiles, utilizes a continuous all-threaded hollow steel bar as the drilling and grouting conduit, which allows drilling and grouting simultaneously without the need of a casing during drilling. A sacrificial (lost) bit with openings that allow for pressure grouting of the hole is threaded onto the end of the hollow bar and is left in place following drilling. A drilling fluid (air, water, or grout) is introduced through the hollow bar and allows the spoils to flush from the borehole opening. Upon reaching the required depth, neat cement grout is then injected under high pressure into the drilled hole to fill the annulus between the bar and the soil from the bottom to the top. Due to the grouting method employed, the shape of the hollow bar micropile is expected to have a bulb shape with an enlarged base."

This report describes economic mining feasibility studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Porcupine mining area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of three mineral deposit types: 1) massive sulfide deposits containing zinc, copper, and silver, 2) vein gold, and 3)disseminated gold. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of mines Cost Estimating S,-stem. Discounted cash flow rates of return were calculated using the Bureau of Mines MINSIM (mining simulation) computer program. Three sets of metal prices were used in the study based on recent historical price information. Underground longhole stope mining of a massive sulfide deposit containing 25 pct zinc. 1 pct copper, and 63.6 g/mt silver was found to be economic at high metal prices at a quantity of 13,200,000 mt ore. Cut-and-fill mining of a 26,400,000 mt massive sulfide deposit was found to be economic at medium metal prices. Open pit mining of a similar deposit was found to he economic at medium metal prices and 26,400,000 mt ore, or at high metal prices and 6,600,000 mt ore. Underground mining of a vein gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 17.1 g/mt medium metal prices and 1,320,000 mt ore. Open pit mining of a disseminated gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 1.71 g/mt medium metal prices and a quantity of 39,600,000 mt ore.

Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental and technical aspects of openpit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (1) controllable factors, like mine equipment selectivity and blast design, and (2) uncontrollable factors, such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls preblast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, through a number of case studies, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cutoff grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit. The results show that changes in cutoff grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy

An account is given of the development of a process to concentrate gold and other valuable minerals and to produce a discardable waste. In this process, the ore is coarsely milled, a bulk flotation concentrate is prepared, and the flotation tailing is scavenged in a hydrocyclone, which returns coarse gangue, moderately coarse valuable minerals, and locked valuable minerals back to the mill. The engineering developments required by this circuit in order that it will fit underground, and the progress made towards the achievement of those requirements, are reviewed. If the waste is to be suitable for use as a backfill in a deep-level, flat tabular excavation, it should be capable of being placed hydraulically, and should have both low voidage and high rates of drainage. Such a material could be prepared by the fine screening of the overflow from the cyclone in the proposed circuit. Possible methods for the handling of the concentrate and the recovery of its valuable constituents are described. The paper concludes with a discussion of the possible benefits from the use, in deep-level Witwatersrand mines, of a system involving concentration underground, extensive backfilling using the tailings from the concentration process, and hydraulic hoisting of the concentrate.

In order to improve the efficiency of hydrometallurgical processing of pyrrhotite concentrates, an integrated set of research has been carried out to investigate the use of sulfur dioxide in individual unit operations and as a leaching agent in the autoclave process as a substitute for oxygen. Treating iron-containing raw materials for production of nonferrous metals are based on the selective reaction of SO2 with iron sulfides and oxides. Iron is dissolved as sulfate, which can be treated in a separate circuit to produce iron-containing pigments or it can be disposed of after neutralization. Nonferrous and precious metals contained in pyrrhotite concentrate do not react with sulfur dioxide and remain virtually completely in the solid phase, i.e. high-grade sulfide concentrate to be treated by hydro- or pyrometallurgical methods. Elemental sulfur formed in the process of leaching is separated from the pulp in granulated form as a result of the use of special surfactants. The process of sulfide concentrate leaching with the use of sulfur dioxide is conducted at temperatures above the sulfur melting point (119°C) with distributed feeding of surfactant and under a partial pressure of sulfur dioxide of up to 0.3 to 0.5 MPa.

New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels. In Westland over 140 gold processing plants are each producing between two and six ounces a day from low-grade placers. A major gold dredging operation will soon be producing over a tonne of gold annually and other new dredges are proposed. There are still vast reserves of gold-bearing gravels in Westland and prospecting is continuing to reveal new resources. In the Reefton area there is renewed interest in gold-bearing quartz reefs which were the source of over a million ounces of gold between 1900 and 1951. New large opencast reserves are now defined.

A new class of thionocarbamates, O-alkyl-N-allyl thionocarbamate (III), has been found to give better metallurgy than 0-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (I) for a number of sulfide ores containing copper, lead, and zinc. Data on the results of flotation tests with several such ores are presented. The improved metallurgy is believed to be due to the participation of the allyl double bond in the complex formation of the thionocarbamate on the surface of the mineral.
