GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines are located at Broken Hill in the western part of New South Wales, Australia, 930 km west¬northwest of Sydney. Mining Methods Where pillars must be left between stopes, extraction of a block of ore between two or more levels is carried out in stages: 1) Stopes are mined overhand by horizontal cut¬and-fill stoping, or by long-hole stoping. The various methods of horizontal cut-and-fill stoping used are desig¬nated as: -Loader cut-and-fill stoping with horizontal blast¬holes and diesel load-haul-dump (LHD) units. -Open stoping with horizontal blastholes and com¬pressed air or electric scrapers, or with diesel or electric LHD units. Square-set timber stoping, where ground condition precludes open stoping. The backs are sup¬ported with timber square sets. Pattern rockbolting of the backs may be used as an intermediate stage between open stoping and square-set stoping. 2) Vertical pillars are mined by undercut-and-fill stoping or by vertical crater retreat stoping. 3) Where a horizontal pillar has been formed below the level above the primary stope, this level pillar, usually 6.1 to 8.2 m in depth, may be mined by over¬hand square-set stoping or by undercut-and-fill. Long-hole stoping is used at the Zinc Corp. (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated (NBHC) to mine parts of the zinc-rich A and B lodes. Drilling is carried out from drill drives and, in some cases, sills. Hole sizes used are 165 mm (61/2 in.), 110 mm (4'h in.), and 65 mm (21/2 in.) nominal diam with hole lengths being limited to 50, 30, and 20 m respectively. Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) and water gel explosives are used. Broken ore is loaded from drawpoints at the bottom of the stope using rubber-tired diesel-driven LHD units which deliver ore to an orepass. Annual production at Zinc Corp. and NBHC accord¬ing to mining method is given in Table 1. At Zinc Corp. mining is being carried out at depths varying between 200 and 832 m. At NBHC it ranges from 528 to 915 m below the surface. The average travel time to the stope is 30 to 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS Size, Shape, and Dip There are six separate lodes which carry minable ore in the mines of Zinc Corp. and New Broken Hill Consolidated. The lowest of these and the main ore bodies presently being mined at Zinc Corp. are the lead lodes, consisting of a siliceous fluoritic ore body (No. 3 lens) and overlying it a calcite rhodonitic ore body (No. 2 lens). Each possesses characteristic ratios of lead, silver, and zinc, although the grade within each lens is variable, in places being as high as 30% Pb. There are also low¬grade portions which consist chiefly of poorly mineral¬ized rhodonitic material. No. 3 lens terminates within the Zinc Corp. leases, while No. 2 lens continues into the NBHC leases where it continues to provide a significant proportion of pro¬duction from the mine. Overlying the No. 2 lens are the various zinc-rich ore bodies. In ascending sequence these are lower No. 1 lens, upper No. 1 lens, A lode, and B lode. A typical assay for the small No. 1 lens group ore bodies is 8% lead, 50 g/t silver, and 20% zinc. The `A' lode is a large low-grade ore body in which the higher grade sections assay 4% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 10% zinc; larger quantities of lower grade ma¬terial also occur. B lode, the main zinc lode, typically assays 5% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 17% zinc. B lode increases in size as it extends south, and in NBHC is a major ore body, contributing about 52% of the production. All the lodes pitch south, the average pitch being 0.52 rad (30°) in the Zinc Corp. leases and rather flatter than this in the NBHC leases (see Figs. 1-3). The ground is all competent rock. Production requirements at Zinc Corp. are 900 000 t and 1 200 000 at NBHC.

The stability of paste fill bulkheads forms an integral part of a successful paste fill system. Bulkheads are constructed at the draw points of open stopes to contain paste fill while the initial pour cures and forms a consolidated plug. Mobilization of uncured paste fill as a result of a bulkhead failure can lead to significant consequences, including endangering the safety of personnel, property damage and production losses and delays. The loading conditions in the paste fill and the resultant lateral loads on the bulkheads are complex and are dependent on many factors. This paper presents a case study of several paste fill bulkhead failures; the results of an in-situ pressure monitoring program to ascertain the pressure loads, and the subsequent paste fill bulkhead evaluation.

Measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise and attenuation along a hoist rope were made in an operating hard-rock mine, Lucky Friday Mine, located near Wallace, Idaho. Spectra of electromagnetic noise generated by various pieces of equipment, spectra of specific noise signals at various depths, and noise and attenuation on the 4250 foot (1295 meter) hoist, were measured. Three techniques were used to make the measurements. First, noise was measured over the en- tire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. Data were recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape for later transformation to spectral plots. Second, noise amplitudes were recorded at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide data for amplitude probability distributions. A third technique gave attenuation data through the direct measurement of field strength at various depths. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots, amplitude probability distribution plots and amplitude curves as a function of depth.

Problems related to strip and auger coal mining have grown with the development of the industry and the economy. New technology has produced equipment that has made mining by surface methods not only highly productive, but potentially highly destructive of water resources and natural environments. On the other hand, growth of the economy has produced an increased demand for clean water and created new demands for amenity values that natural environments provide. Thus, opposing forces have created conflicts in resource use. And these conflicts have made surface mining highly controversial. Resolving the controversy will require the solving of complex economic and social problems. The essence of the economic problem created by surface mining is that, in the absence of proper regulation, substantial costs resulting from the process are borne by the public rather than the mine operator. The major goal for the regulation of the surface mining industry is to provide controls which will promote the attainment of maximum social welfare. Deciding upon the type of controls required, and how to apply them to attain a social optimum, however, poses some very difficult problems. In a comprehensive article on this subject, David B. Brooks defined the problem and suggested that benefit- cost analysis might be helpful in providing guidelines for making decisions about surface mining regulations.1

The Bureau of Mines conducted groove cutting experiments in marble, lime-stone, granite, and quartzite with a 7-inch disk cutter under a normal thrust of 7,000 lb. The values of muck weight per unit length, specific energy, cutting coefficient, and groove depth for each of these rocks were determined for groove spacings ranging from 0.1 to 4 inches, and from these results the values of optimum and critical spacing were computed" The results indicate that compressive strength may be used to predict some of the cutting characteristics of the independent grooves. Considering all the cutting characteristics, particularly those for the interacting grooves, Shore hardness, coefficient of rock strength, and torsional velocity correlate with cutting characteristics better than do other physical properties. Some of the field applications of the principles established in this report are identified.

Although the number of minerals that are ferromagnetic‡ or highly paramagnetic is strictly limited, it has been known for some time that many minerals have slight but supposedly characteristic magnetic susceptibilities. With the exception of pyrrhotite, however, sulphides have been thought nonmagnetic. A new magnetic separator has been made available recently in limited quantity to research laboratories. This device, the Frantz Isodynamic Separator, has been used for the separation of various non-sulphides from each other. Its application to the separation of sulphides, however, does not seem to have been reported. In the Richards Mineral Dressing Laboratories, the success achieved through the use of this device in separating associated sulphides has been so startling as to lead us to believe that it constitutes a magnificent adjunct to heavy-liquid separation and to quantitative mineragraphy as a tool for the mineral investigator. The separator (Fig. I) consists of: 1. A powerful magnet, the strength of which can be adjusted by, means of a rheostat; 2. A vibrating chute of nonmagnetic metal on which the mineral to be separated is made to flow (Fig. 2); 3. A feed bin and adjustable feeder; 4. Receptacles for the collection of products; 5. Means for changing, setting, and accurately reading the two slopes of the chute; viz., the cross slope and longitudinal slope. The separator is made operative by the special shape of its pole pieces, which ensures a strongly converging field. It is said by the makers of the machine that the pole pieces apply a constant mechanical force to a particle of given susceptibility, regardless of its position in the operating space of the separators." Susceptible particles, therefore, behave as though of lower specific gravity than under ordinary circumstances. This effect, combined with the slopes of the chute and the action of the vibrator, causes a stratification not unlike thai obtainable on a shaking table. The chute is of rectangular cross section, and shallow; it is broadened toward the discharge end and divided longitudinally by a partition into two compartments that lead to the collecting receptacles. (Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) THE deposit of rock salt along the shores of Lake Huron, in Canada, has been brought before the public during the last six months, in consequence of the developments made by the diamond drill at Goderich. It is likely to be of more than common interest in the future, since now actual operations have been commenced to exploit the deposit and work it by regular mining. The methods of mining rock salt being but little known in this country, it may be of interest to make a few general remarks in regard to them before entering, upon the description of this new mining enterprise. According to the conditions under which salt is found in nature, various methods have been resorted to, in course of time, to make it available for the human race. They consist in : A. Natural or solar evaporation. B. Artificial evaporation, either exclusively or in connection with the former. C. Mining the rock salt in its natural state, and converting it to a marketable product, if need be, by simply pulverizing it. Without going into the details of the various methods of making salt available in an economical point of view, dependent on its degree of purity, or on various local influences, we cannot refrain from. alluding to the general principles which influence the mining and manufacturing of salt in countries where they have been carried on for hundreds of years. ECONOMICAL CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESS. Salt being one of the articles of prime necessity, and one universally distributed throughout nature, it must always be sold at a comparatively low price. It would even be quoted in the market at prices far below those now ruling, if it were not for the high duties generally imposed upon it, for purposes of state revenues. But looking closer into the subject, it will be found that this duty is probably one of the least oppressive, although in some countries it exceeds sixfold the cost of profitable production. A study of copper cementation on iron was initiated to determine the effect that deposited copper has upon subsequent cementation. A microscopic investigation of cementation on an iron surface showed that cupric ion precipitates predominately on a growing copper deposit attached to the iron surface. A kinetic study of the cementation process in a revolving drum showed that the cementation rate is enhanced by the copper deposit attached to the iron surface and by the discrete copper particles of a cement copper slurry. The kinetic study also indicated that the character of the deposit is affected by the major anion in the solution. The cementation process is visualized to occur as a series of electrochemical cells in which cupric ion precipitates on copper dendrites attached to the iron surface.

The Rosebery and Hercules mines, situated in the Rosebery-Williamsford district in western Tasmania, have a history of production dating back to 1896-7, although full scale production did not commence until 1936, following the development of a satisfactory process of selective flotation (Hall, Cottle, Rosenhain and McGhie, 1953). The mineral composition of the Rosebery zinc-lead ores was first described in detail by Stillwell (1934). The Hercules ore is generally similar, but as yet no descriptions of it have beenpublished.Since Dr. Stillwell's paper appeared, the management of the Rosebery and Hercules mines has from time to time submitted a number of interesting mineral specimens to C.S.I.R.O. Mineragraphie Investigations. Examination of these specimens brought to light eight minerals, some relatively uncommon, not previously recognized in these ores.They are cassiterite, molybdenite, stannite, electrum, meneghinite, boulangerite, pyrargyrite and pyrrhotite. Some of the specimens are also rich in tetrahedrite and gold. In addition each of the other ore minerals described by Stillwell, viz. pyrite, sphalerite, galena, bournonite, chaleopyrite and arsenopyrite, was detected in one or more of the specimens examined during the present study. The principal gangue minerals were found to be quartz, manganiferous carbonate, sericite and barite, agreeing closely with the observations of Stillwell.The present study was based on the examination of the following eight specimens.

"Changing ore types, feed grades and c1rculat1ng loads are some of the many factors that can make flotation feed-back control difficult. To control a flotation circuit using conventional fixed-parameter control algorithms, one must either tune the controllers very often or tune the controllers to the middle of the normal operating range. The former approach is very time consuming, while the latter approach can lead to long periods of either very sluggish responses or highly reactive responses which can lead to instability. The problem becomes compounded if feed-forward variables are introduced, creating even more variables to tune. An alternative to a fixed-parameter control algorithm is an adaptive control algorithm. An adaptive control algorithm continuously retunes itself based on previous reactions to its changes. Feed-forward control also becomes much more viable because the algorithm will tune the feed-forward parameters and the feed-back parameters simultaneously. Using the combination of feed-forward and feed-back tuning is an effective way to decouple the loops needed in flotation circuits where one circuit feeds into another. The advantages of adaptive controllers over conventional controllers will be introduced through the use of a simulator. Also discussed will the be the implementation of adaptive controllers at Brunswick Mining and some of the modifications that are available to help solve more difficult control problems.Brunswick Mining is located just outside of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The concentrator processes approximately 10250 tonnes per day of ore that assays at approximately 8.9 %zn, 3.6 %Pb, 0.3 r.cu and I 00 gram/tonne of Ag. The four products produced are zinc concentrate assaying 51 %Zn, lead concentrate assaying 34 %Pb, copper concentrate assaying 21 %Cu, and a bulk concentrate assaying 32 %Zn and 18 %Pb."

An investigation was carried out on the dynamic liltration behavior of drilling fluids. In a set-up consisting of a porous pipe through which the drilling mud was circulated, dynamic liltration rates and cake thicknesses were determined as a function of flow rate and filtration time. Eventually, a state of equilibrium was reached; i.e., both cake thickness and filtration rate attained constant values. Concurrently, dynamic filtration tests were carried out in a simple dynamic filter apparatus where mud flow was similar to that in a rotational vismmeter. In both arrangements the relation between equilibrium liltration data and rate of shear at the cake surlace was studied. Filter pipe and dynamic filter apparatus were lound to give identical relations. It was therelore concluded that the latter apparatus, which is suitable lor routine measurements on small amounts of mud, could be used to determine the dynamic liltration behavior of mud under borehole flow conditions. Some data are presented on the effect of filtration pressure and temperature on equilibrium filtration rate and cake thickness. INTRODUCTION In oil well drilling, the drilling fluid used generally forms a mud cake on the permeable sections of the borehole wall while filtrate is lost into the formation. As to the conditions under which this filtration process takes place, a distinction should be made between static mud filtration (mud is not circulating) and dynamic mud filtration (mud is circulating). In recent years several investigatorsl-5 have studied the process of dynamic mud filtration about which little had previously been known. This type of filtration is the subject of this paper which confirms several findings of previous investigators. It differs from already published works, however, in the following respects. 1. It contains a description of a simple laboratory apparatus developed for dynamic filtration measurements on small amounts of mud. 2. The effect of rate of shear at the cake surface on dynamic filtration has been studied. As a result of this study, dynamic filtration data pertaining to the borehole conditions of mud flow can be found from laboratory tests. 3. Some data are presented on the effect of filtration pressure and temperature on dynamic filtration. The work was limited to a small number of muds. No attempt was made to compare data on API filtrare loss with dynamic filtration rates. Previous workers have clearly shown that no correlation exists between static and dynamic filtration rates. EXPERIMENTAL ARRANGEMENT To establish whether the effect of mud flow conditions on dynamic filtrations is governed by the rate of shear at the cake surface, two different types of mud flow were used. In this connection the experiments were partially conducted by means of a porous pipe through which mud was circulated, partly in a dynamic filter apparatus which somewhat resembles a rotational viscometer. In both cases the flow conditions of the mud were well defined, thus making it possible to-calculate rates of shear at the cake surface. The filter pipe was 200 cm long with an internal diameter of 3 cm. Its perforated wall was covered on the inside with filter cloth on which the mud cake could form. Mud was pumped through the pipe at linear rates varying from 20 to 186 cm/sec. The required filtration pressure was obtained by means of a lack-pressure valve downstream of the filter pipe. In this arrangement the type of flow existing in the borehole is reasonably well simulated. The dynamic filter apparatus (Figs. I. and 2) consists mainly of two concentric cylinders with a clearance of about 0.5 cm. The outer cylinder (rotor) can be rotated at rates up to 1,000 rpm. Underground coal mining under massive sandstone can present significant challenges if the roof behavior is not well understood. This paper presents a classic cantilever bending/flexing behavior of a longwall tailgate roof caused by the weighting of structurally massive sandstone strata. Nineteen crosscuts of a longwall tailgate under massive sandstone were instrumented with position transducers connected to a data-logger to monitor roof convergence as the longwall face approached. During the monitoring program, an unusual tailgate roof divergence (uplift) was recorded. This roof behavior contradicts expected norm of roof convergence when the longwall is influenced by periodic weighting. The recorded roof movement data indicated that the roof divergence started well ahead of the longwall face. The most inby position transducer started recording progressive roof divergence when the longwall face was approximately 643 feet away. Very gradual roof convergence did not begin until the longwall face got to within 300 feet of the transducer. Recording of accelerated convergence only started after a massive caving event with the face within 280 feet of the recording transducer.

The Bulletin of the Institute for March, 1911, is chiefly devoted to papers upon the iron ores of northeastern Cuba. At that time information about the new developments in the peculiar brown hematites of the region was becoming widely circulated and interest was especially keen. For some years exploration had been conducted with pits and trenches and so great an area had been shown to contain ore in the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas or San Felipe districts, that the reserves conveniently situated for the consumption of American furnaces were estimated as quite two billions of tons. Information and data necessary for research on improving methods of oil recovery from low-permeability reservoirs and for comparison and evaluation of performance of such reservoirs with those producing from more permeable sands were obtained. Core analyses, well logs, production tests, well stimulation techniques, primary and secondary production records, and data on two water-flood projects were examined for wells producing from the Bartlesville sand, West Avant field, Osage County, Okla. Overall recovery from the study area was generally poor with only 9.0 percent of the pore volume recovered to January 1, 1968. Larger fracture treatments (8,000 to 12,000 gal) could have resulted in an increase in primary oil recovery. Secondary recovery by water-flooding accounted for only 1.9 percent of the pore volume because of the inability to control the large volume of injection fluid that escaped from the flood patterns and the excessive volumes of water produced with the oil. Future waterflood development in other low-permeability reservoirs should include the drilling of new input wells, use of injectivity surveys to locate possible natural fracture systems, or zones of high permeability, and control of injection fluids by altering flood patterns and/or plugging of the more permeable zones.

Following the pattern established in the 1989 edition of this study, the concept of data availability must be addressed, because there are perceptible changes from year to year, and the availability of accurately reported, precisely defined statistics and nonstatistical information provides the only sound basis for analytical studies of any type. As the countries of eastern Europe, including the numerous states that formerly comprised the U.S.S.R., undergo the transition from centrally planned economies' to market economies, there has been a perceptible increase in information availability for rather obvious reasons. Any industrial operation seeing economic assistance from government and/or private sources outside the country in which the facility is sited must provide some appraisal of its operations at the time it seeks assistance, as well as some information on previous performance to serve as tools in evaluating its potential under the proposed development scheme for which it seeks financial assistance. This situation, coupled with governmental recognition that concealment of much of the national mineral production, trade, and consumption data for purposes of national security probably never was really necessary and certainly proved unnecessary with the end of the so-called cold war, has led to the publication of increasing amounts of both statistical and nonstatistical information in the countries undergoing economic transition.

El presente texto señala el método de evaluación que determine el sistema óptimo de los explosivos de una voladura. Los componentes básicos para una voladura óptima son: características de la roca, planificación de la mina, preparación, manipuleo, equipo de procesado y sistema de explosivos. Es preciso anotar que el punto óptimo de una voladura no está constituído por un grupo estático de condiciones. Si consideramos que los costos de perforación y disparo representan una parte significativa del costo total de la operación de minado, no es posible ignorar avances tecnológicos que ofrecen substanciales reducciones en el costo. Em este sentido, el sistema de potencia de campo, se plantea como el sistema adecuado para la predicción rendimiento de un explosivo a través de la determinación de su potencia, "in situ" bajo condiciones indicadas.
