Most epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are hosted in late Miocene andesites. Broken Hills is an exception, being one of the few economic deposits hosted in rhyolite. Investigation of Broken Hills provides the opportunity to collate structural data that may be compared with that collected from andesite-hosted deposits in order to evaluate the importance of rock type on vein development. The rhyolite host rock at Broken Hills is strongly flow-banded, but this anisotropy does not appear to affect the orientation of mineralised structures. There is a range of structures at Broken Hills: veins, faults, fractures, and large breccia pipes. Veins generally strike north-south, with localised changes in strike and thickness. Slip vectors determined from striations indicate near pure dipslip on the main lode, indicating an extensional tectonic setting. The orientations of vein deflections are parallel to slip vectors. This correlation is common in modern extensional fault arrays where fault growth and linkage produces subvertical deflections in fault orientation (eg TVZ). There are three main types of breccias: 1. Primary breccias related to rhyolite emplacement. 2. Jigsaw type secondary breccias that are that developed during the life of the hydrothermal system. 3. Breccia pipes. Broken Hills was a dynamic epithermal mineralising system.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

Recent work by the authors1 established the constitutional diagram of the gold-germanium system. Of particular interest in the simple euctectiferous system was the eutectic alloy at 12 per cent Ge, which melted at the very low temperature of 356°C and had an unusually fine eutectic structure. It was of interest to investigate the effect of third components on the melting point, microstructure, and strength of this alloy, and in this work the effect of copper is discussed rather completely, with less complete data on the effects of silver, platinum, nickel, and zinc. No reference in the literature has been found on ternary systems with gold-germanium. Materials and Alloying -4s in the work on the binary system, gold-germanium, the germanium used in this investigation was the cyanide-reduced, 99.9 per cent product, produced by the Eagle-Picher Co. Fine gold sheet from Handy and Harmon, pure platinum sheet from the American Platinum Works, copper magnet wire from Anaconda, nickel wire assaying 99.6 per cent Ni. and electrolytic zinc were used for alloying. To make the alloys, charges of the pure metals were put in a graphite crucible and melted in an atmosphere of pure hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to about I050 C, and the metal allowed to freeze in the crucible. Except with alloys containing zinc, melting losses were consistently less than a few milligrams. When zinc was a component, weight losses up to half the weight of the zinc present were incurred, and the alloy compositions were calculated by assuming the entire weight loss to be that of zinc. In all other cases the composition of the alloys could safely be taken as that of the charge. The ingots, as solidified, were segregated, the heavier primary phases being at the bottom and sides of the ingots and the lighter primary phases at the top, but by sectioning the entire ingot vertically for microscopic examination, this factor could be evaluated. Ingots for microscopic examination weighed one gram, and those for thermal analysis weighed three grams. Thermal Analysis In this work, the eutectic line composition and thermal arrests were desired, and, after microscopic exploration had established the position of the eutectic line at a given percentage of the third component, a thermal analysis was run at that composition. The method of thermal analysis used in the work on the binary Au-Ge system,' a method particularly well suited for a small quantity of material, was used in this work. A temperatura de carregamento do ferro-gusa no convertedor é de suma importância para o acerto do balanço térmico do convertedor. Dessa maneira, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo a proposição de uma equação de modelamento da perda térmica na panela de ferro-gusa da thyssenkrupp CSA com o intuito de prever, com melhor acurácia, a temperatura de carregamento no convertedor. Os resultados encontrados pelo modelo foram comparados com os valores reais de perda térmica na panela e concluiu-se que a equação desenvolvida se mostrou bastante assertiva e abrangente. Foram consideradas novas variáveis nesta abordagem que, até então, não eram utilizadas pelo modelo de perda térmica nas panelas de ferro-gusa da CSA.

O presente trabalho analisa as falhas por desgaste em um transportador de correia de uma empresa mineradora que beneficia o minério de ferro. O transportador de correia, por ser um equipamento critico em qualquer linha de produção, é o objeto do estudo de caso utilizado para o desenvolvimento do trabalho. O objetivo desse estudo é reunir informações a respeito dos desgastes que o transportador apresenta em um determinado período de tempo para criar uma tabela com os principais tipos de desgastes e a freqüência com que eles ocorrem. As falhas por desgaste são encontradas através da pesquisa documental pelo software Maximo e da análise feita no local do transportador. Como resultados das análises foi constatado que o desgaste predominante é o abrasivo por dois e três corpos, esse promove a perda gradual de material da superfície dos componentes do transportador de correia.

A Votorantim Metais possui dois Smelters de Zn situados no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, um na cidade de Três Marias e outro na cidade de Juiz de Fora. A unidade de Juiz de Fora tem se caracterizado ao longo dos anos pela mudança de estratégia no que diz respeito a obtenção de matérias-primas, buscando oportunidades em materiais secundários ricos em Zn, em substituição ao concentrado de Zn, tornando-se ao longo do tempo cada vez mais uma unidade recicladora. O cemento é um material gerado na Hidrometalurgia do Zn, mais precisamente na etapa de purificação, e é composto basicamente por Zn, Cu, Cd, Co, Pb e Tl. A solução purificada, produzida após esta etapa é direcionada a eletrólise para produção de zinco eletrolítico. Atualmente em Juiz de Fora, todo cemento gerado é destinado a uma área específica da hidrometalurgia para seu tratamento e recuperação de Zn e Cd. Os demais metais são perdidos e dispostos na barragem de rejeitos. Na planta de Três Marias não existe área específica para tratamento desse material, e dessa forma, todo ele é estocado em depósito especial. O objetivo desse estudo é avaliar e propor uma rota alternativa de processo que permita uma maior recuperação de metais dos cementos de TM e JF, utilizando os ativos da planta de tratamento de cementos de JF levando dessa forma a redução da geração de resíduos enviados para as barragens de uma forma economicamente viável.

"The Samatosum Project is a base and precious metal deposit located in south central British Columbia. A dilute ore reserve of 766, 682 tonnes grading an average 1.1% copper, 3.0% zinc, 1.4% lead, 833 gram per tonne silver and 1.6 gram per tonne gold is available. The base metals occur as tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Virtually all of the silver and gold are associated with the tetrahedrite.The mill is operated at a rate of 21 tonnes per hour. Sulphur dioxide is used as a zinc depressant in the grinding circuit. Production of a Cu/Pb/Ag concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. This concentrate is then separated into Cu-Ag and Pb concentrates through a reverse flotation circuit utilizing sulphur dioxide, starch and sulphuric acid as lead depressants.The tailings from the Cu/Pb/Ag circuit are treated with copper sulphate to activate the zinc. Production of a zinc concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. Dewatering of the concentrates to 6% moisture is done with a LAROX filter press.Tailings effluent is treated with lime and sodium sulphide to precipitate out the heavy metals. The resulting sludge is treated in OYNASAND sand filtration units to produce a quality effluent."

The Australian mining industry is at an interesting stage in its development. Of the large number of mining companies in Australia, some are still solely domestic in their focus, others have made their first tentative forays offshore, and others are global players of significance in tile world industry.   It is not long ago that the entire industry was almost exclusively domestic in its focus. Very few companies before the early 1980s had ventured offshore, and those that did so were considered quite risque. The initial moves were made mainly by large companies who could afford to lose the funds expended in getting started in a range of offshore locations.   Almost all offshore jurisdictions were considered to be high risk compared to the safety of home - I recall the extreme difficulty I encountered in the mid 1980s in endeavouring to persuade a Board to joint venture into an attractive gold opportunity in South East Asia.   One of the problems inhibiting the offshore development of the Australian mining industry was that some mining companies had had unfortunate experiences offshore. Others had heard of those who had had unfortunate experiences offshore and, as such, 'offshore' gained a bad name and the more risk averse boards and. management of the time simply put the whole idea into the 'too hard' basket.

The performance of microemulsified diesel and conventional diesel collectors in coal flotation was compared by flotation indicators, including combustible recovery, ash content of the clean coal, and the flotation index. An efficient separation with lower dosage was obtained using the microemulsified diesel collector. Under optimum separation conditions, the microemulsion consumption was 100 g/t less compared with diesel. The saving in diesel consumption using the microemulsion reached about 70%, disregarding the consumption of the surfactant and cosurfactant. Frothing tests showed that the frother dosage was decreased by using the microemulsion collector, because of the surfactant and cosurfactant added during preparation. The microemulsified diesel collector is superior to the conventional diesel collector in terms of diesel consumption and separation efficiency, but the selectivity requires further improvement. The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

The paper presents the results of several industrial and laboratory blasting, crushing and grinding tests and experiments investigating how blasting can influence the subsequent crushing and grinding operations. The paper also describes how these results can be used in order to optimize the entire comminution process from solid ore to a semifinished or marketable product. Two cases are presented, one looking at the processing of fine grained taconite ore, and the other discussing the processing of raw milling product for cement burning.

"The early history of the Geological Survey of Canada is closely connected with coal geology investigations in the Atlantic Provinces. In 1843, Sir William Logan, the first director of the Geological Survey, measured the 4441m thick shore section at Joggins in Nova Scotia. Detailed mapping of the coalfields were subsequently carried out by H. Fletcher during the latter part of the nineteenth and first part of the present century. During the 1920-1940 period, the stratigraphy of the carboniferous WIZS' established by WA. Bell, who later also became a diretor of the Survey. Bell's work WIZS' followed by coal geology investigations of A.A. Hayes, W.S. Dyer, EA. Goranson, G. W.H. Norman, J.E. Muller, T.B. Haites and P.A. Hacquebord.The activities and accomplishments of the Survey geologists during the past 150 years are presented in this paper.General Outline of Survey Activities in Coal Geology During the Past 150 YearsIn 1842, when the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) was established, the industrialization of the major countries of Western Europe and North America was actively persued. The energy required for this industrialization was obtained from the only fossil fuel then available, namely coal. The measure of a country's major mineral wealth at that time was the availability of mineable resources of coal. Eastern Canada, where mining had been carried out since 1720, was known to be well endowed with valuable coal deposits. In the major fields of Nova Scotia (Fig. I) several large-scale operations had been started during the middle and latter part of the nineteenth century.The significance of coal, therefore, was well understood, and exploration surveys specifically oriented toward coal were carried out by the Geological Survey from its earliest beginning. The first report of a detailed geological description of the coal measures of eastern Canada was prepared in 1843 by Sir William Logan (1845), the founder and first director of the Geological Survey of Canada. This early work was continued and complemented in 1896 by H. fletcher (1906), who during the latter part of the nineteenth century and first part of the present century systematically mapped the coal-bearing regions of Nova Scotia, which he considered all to be of approximately the same age."

Equilibria studies of selenium distribution for sodium-borate slags were initiated at 1473k under reducing condition as a function of slag composition and alloy composition. The Se distribution coefficient (% Se in slag/% Se in metal) increased from 0.4 to 2.9 with increase in basicity (0.53 to 0.86) for Cu-0.446% Se alloy. However, the results are not very useful from industrial application viewpoint. Therefore, in order to improve the distribution of Se, CaO (10% to 50%) was added to the sodium-borate slag of basicity 0.864. On addition of 502 CaO, the distribution coefficient increased roughly by 100% for slag composition - 44.5% Borax, 22.2% Na2C03, 33.3% CaO and Cu-0.44677 Se alloy. Further, the value of this distribution coefficient has been found to increase by an additional 80% on addition of 20% CaF2 to the above slag for all Cu-Se alloy compositions. Also with increase in initial concentration of Se, the distribution coefficient has been noted to increase.

The first systematic attempt of the National Museum to gather material representing the economic geology and metallurgy of the country was made in connection with the Centennial Exhibition. The department may be considered as having originated then, althongh it was not formally inaugurated until December, 1882. Previous to the Centennial, all the illustrations of economic geology had been included in the mineral collection, and the illustrations of metallurgy were so very few that they had also been included with the minerals. When the museum began its collections for the Centennial, the subject of the mineral resources of tile United States was placed in the hands of Professor Wm. P. Blake, who was eminently fitted to undertake the work by his experience at various international exhibitions and his extensive acquaintance with the mining industry of the country. Professor Blake prepared a broad and exhaustive plan for this purpose, and the very large collection shown at Philadelphia was well calculated to set forth the vast mineral wealth of the country. The history of the department proper may conveniently be divided into three periods : first, the formative period, during which the Centennial material was mainly administered upon, ending Jnly 1, 1884, with the beginning of the preparation for the New Orleans Exposition; second, the New Orleans Exposition period, from July 1, 1884, to June 30, 1887, during which the collections for the New Orleans Exposition were made, exhibited at New Orleans, returned to Washington, and installed permanently in the museum; third, the southwest-court period, from July 1, 1887, to October 1, 1889, during which the collections were arranged in the southwest court of the museum.

Golden Star Resources started gold mining operations in Africa in 1999 after 15 years of exploration in South America. At the time, the approach to local assistance was through "alternative livelihood" programs and the donation of infrastructure to local communities. This was initially successful with local community support. However, with time and on reviewing the implemented projects, it became evident that the success was limited and many if the projects were either poorly used or in disrepair. Through a review of the options, we decided to develop a community assistance model driven by the communities themselves, while keeping control of the finances and the actual construction of the projects. Through the formation of the Golden Star Development Foundation, we began to support community driven projects for local economic development. The evolution of economic development projects continued over the next several years with the addition of project requirements for partnerships with government, and finally an evolution to a partnered turn-key piece of infrastructure that we hand over to an agency for operation and ongoing maintenance. We are currently working with outside partners to further our economic development activities in Ghana to the benefit of our stakeholders.

Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

Dado que se descubrieron grandes depósitos de fosfatos de Bayovar en Piura, se anunció la creación de la reserva subterránea de salmueras, donde sobresale el potasio, la sal común y el magnesio. Posteriormente, se relacionó la explotación de los fosfatos a la recuperación de sal y KCL. y la presencia de salmueras se convirtió en la única reserva de potasio del pais. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la importancia del magnesio en dichas salmueras en tanto permite recuperar el magnesio a partir del proceso de evaporación y concentración. De forma que es posible la obtención de magnesio por el tratamiento térmico de los amargos y así fabricar el fosfato dicálcico mediante el proceso convencional, sin necesidad de usar el agua de mar.
