When an Fe-2 pct A1 alloy is nitrogemted at 500ºC with a gus tnixture (NH3-H2) in which the nitrogen activity has been kept Lou] enough to avoid the formation of iron nitride, a two-phase alloy is generuled which consists of AlN particles and a ferrite phase cotaining a heavy network of dislocations. The amount of nitrogen contained in such an alloy, when equilibrated with the nitrogenating atmosphere, far exceeds both that needed to satisfy the normal solution requirements of a Fe and that needed to convert all of the aluninuwi to AlN. This excess nitrogen is accounted for as being trapped on dislocations, adsorbed at the ferrite -AlN interface, and as an en-Iuznced lattice solubility in strained ferrite. This excessive uptake of nitrogen had previously been attribuled by other investigators to the formation of a nonstoichiornetric aluminum nitride. Isotope exchange experiments revealed various amomts of exchargeable N14 present in the originally nitrided samples that could not be removed by reduction with HS at 500ºC. This exchangeable nitrogen has been identified us that bound to the AlN -ferrite interface. Estimates of inter facial areas in alloys containing -3 pct by weight of A1N are as high as 10 sq m per g of alloy. ThE first1 of this series of papers described the experiments forming the basis for the elucidation of the mechanism of the formation of aluminum nitride particles within an Fe-A1 alloy. It was found that not only are dislocations necessary for the nucleation of the AlN particles but also the nitriding reaction in turn produces a dense network of dislocations in the ferrite matrix. It was also observed that nitrogen in excess of that needed for the formation of stoichiometric AIN is taken up by the alloy without the formation of an iron nitride. The present paper is an analysis of the excess nitrogen sorbed by the nitrided Fe-A1 alloy which considers the structure generated by the formation of the aluminum nitride particles. Because of the high density of dislocations, this system has proved to be quite useful in studying nitrogen-dislocation interactions. Wriedt and Darken2 have already reported such studies in a cold-worked ferritic steel. EXPERIMENTAL Nitrogen Sorption. The specimens of this alloy were cold worked (50 pct reduction) to 0.011 in. thickness and chemically cleaned in a 2:1 concentrated phosphoric acid-50 pct hydrogen peroxide solution before nitrogenation. The flowing nitrogenating atmosphere (11 pct NH3-89 pct H2) was established before the ni- trogenating temperature was reached. The same gravimetric and gas-flow equipment described in an earlier paper1 was also used in this investigation. Changes in nitrogen concentration were followed gravimetrically when establishing the isotherms. In the isotope exchange experiments, concentration changes were followed volumetrically. In some instances chemical analyses (Kjeldahl method) were used to check for material balances in both the gravimetric and volumetric procedures. Our objective was to obtain reversible nitrogen sorption isotherms for alloys equilibrated with NH3-H2 gas mixtures over a large range of nitrogen activity* and temperature. Actually the nitrogen activity, aN, in the alloy equals K PNH3 /p3/2H2, where K is the equilibrium constant for the reaction NH3 = N + 3/2H2. upper limit for nitrogen activity was below that which would produce iron nitride; for reasons which will become apparent later, most of the sorption studies were made in the temperature range between 400" and 500'C. The alloy sample studied most extensively in this investigation was given a series of successive reductions (100 pct H2) and nitrogenating treatments at 500°C to attain a stabilized structure. Presumably some dislocations were lost during these treatments. Throughout most of the sorption studies, temperature was held at ± 1°C and the gas-phase composition was held to k0.2 pet NH3. The exchange rate between the gas phase and the alloy was too slow, involving many days. To circumvent the slow exchange with the gas phase, measured amounts of N15 and N14 were introduced into the alloy by nitrogenating with an NH3-H2, mixture at 500°C containing an N15/N14 ratio of 7.76; the charged specimens were then sealed by allowing an oxide film to form over them in air, and in this final condition the specimens were subjected to 500°C in vacuum for various times during which isotope exchange was allowed to proceed within the specimen. There have already been so many subjects of a purely mechanical nature presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers, that it is unnecessary for me to apologize for adding another to the list. When a new invention, or what is supposed to be a new invention, claiming simply an improvement on the well-known devices, is to be described, it is usual to point out the defects of the old and give a history of the object or the art up to date. But, as no doubt a large proportion of the members of this Institute know as much, or more, about the history and use of the steam-engine indicator than I do myself, I will not further preface the subject, than to remind you that what called for the Richards's improvement on the Watt's indicator was high speed; that the leading improvement was the reduction of momentum in the reciprocating parts; and that this was accomplished by making the parts lighter, and reducing the travel of the heaviest, of them, and consequently the speed and momentum. The use of the indicator has been extended, for the speed of steamengines and other prime movers has been increased, until one engineer at least, John Cooper, of Philadelphia, says, "I want an indicator that will work up to a thousand revolutions." .Mr. Thompson, of the Buckeye Steam-Engine Company, of Salem, Ohio, has improved on the Richards's indicator by another reduction in the momentum, which is done by putting the parallel motion nearer the fulcrum of the pencil arm, reducing both weight and travel. The rate of reaction of cuprite was measured in a series of sulphuric acid solutions, from which oxygen had been excluded, at various concentrations and temperatures. The overall reaction CuzO + H2S04 + Cu " + CuO + H20 + So4' may be explained quantitatively by two simultaneous rate reactions involving not only H+ but also the hydrolytic adsorption of H2SO4. The results indicate the importance of considering surface mass balance relationships associated with heterogeneous surface reactions. T EACHING has long been an important method for the recovery of metals from certain minerals. Many processes have assumed minor importance in modern practice but such operations as the recovery of uranium and present interest in high pressure-high temperature solution of sulphides' ' well illustrate the importance of leaching as a unit operation. Little quantitative information is available in a form sufficient to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface for given systems. For this reason, it is important that fundamental studies of leaching processes be conducted so that parameters associated with such surface reactions may be understood and correlated. Cuprite was chosen for this study as a result of a recent investigation carried out at the University of Utah on ores of the Ray and Chino Mines Divs. of the Kennecott Copper Corp. These sulphide deposits contain sufficient oxidized minerals, such as cuprite, malachite, and azurite, so that recovery of metal values contained in the oxidized fraction is of primary interest. C. M. Bishop (Aircraft Div., A. V. Roe Cnnada Ltd., Toronto)—Reference is made to the coherency hardening of ß due to ß' and also to the hardening of ß due to a coherent precipitation of the a phase. What is meant by the term "ß'?" Would not the coherency hardening of ß during cooling be due to precipitation of a sub-microscopic dispersion of a, as is the case during reheating a ß-quenched alloy? I feel that these two phenomena are essentially the same mechanism, i.e., precipitation of a from unstable or supersaturated ß. From the text, it would appear that Tables III and IV are intended to show the effect of the martensite transformation on the properties of Ti-Mn alloys. Referring to Table 111, the ß-quenched alloys would contain a greater proportion of retained ß than would the equilibrated alloy. Could not the increase in properties be attributed to this, along with possible coherency hardening of the ß? In the same way, the structures referred to in Table IV contain ß from which they could derive their hardness. It would appear to be difficult, if not impossible, to assess the role of the martensite transformation from the data contained in these tables. F. C. Holden, H. R. Ogden, and R. I. Jaffee (authors' reply)—In reply to the first question raised by Mr. Bishop, the term "ß"' designates an apparent retained-p structure which is harder than it is after the most rapid cooling from the ß field. It is thought to be the result of a coherent precipitation of a. The mechanism by which hardening takes place is undoubtedly the same as that involved in the early stages of aging of a re-tained-p structure, and we are in agreement with Mr. Bishop on this point. The term "ß'" to designate the anomalously hard retained-ß structure was agreed upon at a symposium in 1953." The authors do not agree that the quantity of retained ß and/or ß' in the ß-quenched specimens of Table III is necessarily greater than that of the 600°C equilibrated specimens. The ß-quenched specimen has a structure which appears to be completely a' formed by the martensite reaction. It is recognized that there could be some retained ß (or ß') between the a plates if the M, temperature is below room temperature. This is unlikely for the 3.4 pct Mn alloy where the M, is known to be at about 640°C. Therefore, the increase in strength cannot be attributed to the presence of a greater quantity of coherency-hardened ß, but, rather, the increase in strength must be attributed to the transformation products formed, e.g., a' (martensiti-cally formed a). Concerning the data in Table IV, we agree that it is difficult to estimate the role of the martensite reaction, since the 6.4 pct Mn alloy was retained ß in the quenched condition.

"Navarro is the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it collects about 1.600 tons of waste daily. The environment surrounding Navarro is highly contaminated and the pollutants released by the dump threaten human health in the adjoining neighborhoods. The goal of our project is to identify major pollutants released from the dump and their distribution in the surrounding ecosystem. In a first phase of the sampling and analysis program landfill leachate was collected and screened for heavy metals and for the most common persistent organic pollutants. This allowed us to identify the most relevant compounds on which we focused in a more detailed second phase investigation. These compounds were quantified in the vicinity of the landfill (groundwater, surface water, drinking water and soil) to get information on their mobility and possible pathways into the human body.IntroductionThe usual technique of waste disposal in most developing countries is by landfilling on not -, or not well controlled sites, where people live close by or even on the waste itself. A typical example for this practice is Navarro, the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it now consists of about 23 million tons of household and industrial waste. The dump is located on a wetland in the riverbed of the Cauca River, the main drinking water source for Cali. Two ponds of unknown permeability located next to the landfill collect a fraction of the waste leachate. During the rainy season, the ponds frequently overflow and drain into the soil (alluvial, loamy sediments) of surrounding sugar cane fields. The environment of Navarro is assumed to be highly polluted and there is evidence that it affects the health of nearby inhabitants. Specifically, the incidence of respiratory diseases was higher among vulnerable individuals (<3 and >50 years old) living in a <3 km perimeter of Navarro as compared with a control group (Solano et al., 2006). Further, a clustering of extremely rare congenital malformations (sirenomelias and cyclops) was observed in a small area during a short time period (<6 months) (Filigrana et al., 2008)."

"As native gold resources are depleted, gold-sulfide ores consisting essentially of pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite become one of the major precious metal sources, being presently estimated to account for more than 40 % of total world gold reserves.The prime objective of flotation of gold-bearing sulfide minerals is to increase precious metal recovery and to reduce the product cost through achieving maximum selectivity of the separation process. Separation of Fe and As sulfides in selective flotation of gold-bearing ore products helps reduce the amount of ore mass being sent to hydrometallurgical processing, and permits of recovering gold from As-free gold-containing pyrite concentrate by using a lower-cost pyrometallurgical procedure.An ingenious methodology purposively developed by the authors for comprehensive assessment of flotation properties, electrophysical characteristics and crystal chemistry features of natural gold-bearing sulfide minerals of different origin has been used in this study.Comparison of the elemental composition, non-stoichiometry and flotation activity of different monomineralic pyrite varieties revealed that samples with negligible impurity content are nearly stoichiometric, and show similar flotation properties. Samples with high Cu, As and Au contents are highly non-stoichiometric and readily floatable, even in a highly alkaline environment. Samples with high surface sulfur content and the most defective crystal lattices, with iron atoms substituting for sulfide vacancies, are most sensitive to depressive action of the alkali.A correlation between the type of conductivity, impurity content and amount of xanthate compounds on the surface and in the liquid phase of monomineralic pyrite and arsenopyrite suspensions detected by the extractive spectrophotometric analysis has been identified and analyzed. Experiments showed that the proportion of cuprous xanthate in sorptive collector layers on sample surfaces increases with increasing Cu content of the samples. In general, pH for pH, overall xanthate sorption on pyrite is greater than on arsenopyrite, with the difference increasing in passing from an acid environment to an alkaline one. A significant decrease in xanthate sorption on arsenopyrite is observed at pH greater than 9, whereas sorption on pyrite markedly decreases at pH greater than 11."

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. The project involves clearance improvements to twenty-eight tunnels, twenty-one of which require structural modification. With construction of the first Package of tunnels just underway at press time, this paper summarizes the program implementation from design through the initial stages of construction.

New Zealand has often been quoted by metallurgists and others as one of the countries in which Tellurium is found, and locally it has been recorded that appreciable quantities of tellurium have been met with in the Thames and surroundingdistricts. However, specimens containing tellurium which have been obtained on this field have not been preserved and their scarcity today points to the fact that tellurium is not here abundant.To ascertain its distribution, analyses and assays have been made by the author on a large number of ores, the results of several of which are given below.The presence of any considerable percentage of tellurium has an important bearing on the metallurgical treatment of ores in which it is found.

In the past few years several articles and papers presenting results of solution gas-drive depletion calculations have appeared in the lit-erature. Such calculations are of interest to the oil industry, for investment decisions must often be made before much is known about a reservoir. At other times, an estimate of the possible benefits to be realized from alternate production methods is desirable, and theoretical depletion calculations can serve as a floor or reference level from which to work. In any case, an estimate of ultimate oil recovery based upon engineering data is commonly required. An engineer confronted with the problem of obtaining, for a specific reservoir system, an estimate of ultimate oil recovery by solution gas-drive depletion usually will be forced to perform the calculations himself. This is despite the quantity of data in the literature. Rarely will either experience or the literature provide results from a reservoir system similar in all important respects to the one under consideration, and calculated results are not so plentiful that satisfactory interpolation procedures can be devised. Performing the calculations, however, is a tedious, time-consuming task unless an electronic computer is available, and, in practice, time and manpower are not always available for this purpose. A quick, simple, consistent method was needed for reducing the uncer- tainty in estimated oil recovery from solution gas-drive reservoirs when only minimum information about the reservoir system is available. PROCEDURE Method of Calculation The usual requisite assumptions were made so that the material balance equation could be used to calculate data for the charts. The following assumptions were made: (1) the reservoir is homogeneous and isotropic; (2) oil recovery is due entirely to solution gas drive and neither a gas cap nor a water drive nor gravity drainage is present; (3) the initial reservoir pressure is the bubble-point pressure of the reservoir fluid; (4) initial total liquid saturation is 100 per cent of pore space; (5) interstitial water saturation remains at the initial value as the reservoir pressure declines from the bubble-point pressure to atmospheric pressure; (6) equilibrium gas saturation is 5 per cent of pore space; and (7) oil and gas saturations are uniformly distributed throughout the reservoir at all times. There are no saturation gradients due to a wellbore, nor is the geometry of the reservoir system considered. The material balance equation was written in the form of a differential equation&apos; which was integrated to determine the change in oil saturation for an assigned pressure drop. Formal integration was not possible, so recourse was made to the Runge-Kutta method&apos; of numerical integration. All computations were performed on IBM equipment. Numerical integration yielded the change in oil saturation within the reservoir as the pressure. declined from the bubble-point pressure to atmospheric pressure. The initial oil saturation minus the change in oil saturation yielded the oil saturation at atmospheric pressure. The oil originally in place was obtained by dividing the initial oil saturation by the initial formation volume factor (differential liberation) while the oil in place at atmospheric pressure was obtained by dividing the final oil saturation by the formation volume factor at atmospheric pressure. U1timate oil recovery, expressed as a percentage of the initial oil in place, was obtained by dividing the difference between the oil initially in place and the oil in place at atmospheric pressure by the oil initially in place and multiplying by 100. PVT Data Charts were based upon 135 solutions to the material balance equation. PVT properties of the reservoir fluids were variables in this equation and had to be known as functions of pressure. The required PVT data might have been obtained from either actual reservoir fluid systems or correlated data. However, correlated PVT data were developed and employed in the calculations for the following reasons: (1) it is doubtful that 135 sets of PVT data could have been obtained for the values of variables investigated in this study, and (2) results of recovery calculations from randomly obtained PVT data could not be correlated as well as rssults from selected PVT data. Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to flocculation of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves.

The current design method for soil-cement (SC) columns improved soft clayey ground under the highway embankments assumes a slip circle failure surface shearing through the columns and the soils using a weighted average shear strength. However, the results from the laboratory centrifuge model test and numerical analysis indicate that in many cases, the SC columns fail by bending. Some researchers have proposed methods for estimating the maximum embankment loading for bending failure of SC columns, but those methods have limitations in correctly considering the internal shear stresses or not applicable for the group SC column improvement. Numerous model embankments on SC columns have been simulated by three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) and the mechanism of bending failure and the magnitude of the bending moment in the SC columns under embankment load has been investigated. Based on the simulated results, the design method for the estimation of the bending failure of floating SC columns has been proposed. The predicted results from the proposed method agreed with the existing field condition of one embankment in Saga, Japan reported in the literature in terms of the stability of columns. Hence the proposed method can be used for the design of floating SC columns in the soft ground.

The overall supply of platinum is forecast to rise more than the demand, and market deficit will narrow somewhat, but is still substantial at about 480 000 ounces. Because of this deficit, the price of platinum is expected to remain high, not taking into account the impetus from funds and speculators. With this strong demand for platinum and the high price, platinum producers still need to initiate projects to not only sustain current production, but also expand output into the high demand. However, the rise in the platinum price does not entirely offset the drop in revenue due to the strong rand. Consequently, in the current economic environment, executives and managers are under extreme pressure to initiate only the highest yielding projects and implementing them successfully. During the initiation phase of a project, the cost of changing concepts is the least, and strategic project decisions are the most important. It is during this phase that the most value can be added to a project, therefore requiring inputs from highly skilled, creative and experienced people. This paper will discuss thought processes and paradigms during the initiation of projects that will assist project owners in the selection and initiation of successful and profitable projects. The project initiation process will also be discussed outlining selection models, risk analyses and funding considerations.

The Vulture mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was a major gold producer from 1863 to 1942, having yielded about 11t(12.1 st) Au and 8t (8.8st) Ag. Gold occurs as coarse native metal and electrum in quartz veins and also finely dis¬seminated within a quartz monzonite sill and its silicified wall rock. The sill is semi-conformable within a Proterozoic volcaniclastic-dominated sequence, all dipping north about 35°. Early mining focused on the vein-hosted gold, particularly in the immediate hanging wall and footwall of the sill. Later efforts included some open-pit mining of the outcropping sill and adjacent altered and mineralized rock. Two sets of post-mineral faults have complicated the orebody geometry. The sill is a 350 m (1148 ft) long apophysis from a quartz mozonite stock to the west of the mine area. The stock has been dated at 85 my and contains abundant lesser gold occurrences in its core and about its margins. The Proterozoic rocks are notably lean in precious metals except where altered in proximity to the Creataceous stock and sill. Circumstances dictate an interpretation of epigenetic mineralization related to the Laramide intrusion.

Thallous chloride and cadmium metal were recovered from a thallium-cadmium concentrate by a method suited to the treatment of small batches. Differences in oxide solubility and control of pH were employed to separate the thallium and cadmium. The cadmium metal produced by zinc reduction analysed better than 99.95 per cent Cd and thallous chloride of high purity was precipitated from solution.

Filtration of hematite ore slurries can be a bottleneck in some hematite processing plants due to inadequate filtration rates caused by the dispersion of fine particles. Flocculation of fine particles in the slurry decreases the specific cake resistance of the filter cake allowing for increased filtration rates. CO2 sparging of hematite slurry was shown to increase the filtration rate by altering the pH and the surface chemistry of the particles. It was shown that an increase in filtration rate of 278% can be accomplished by lowering the pH from 11 to 6.5 using CO2. This was attributed to increased flocculation of hematite and silica particles in the ore.
