Turkish iron and steel sector, the base of which was established in the 1930?s, plays an important role in the industrialization and development of the country?s economy. In Türkiye this sector is the major consumer of ferroalloys. There had been a great improvement in Turkish Iron and Steel industry, especially after the 1980?sand as a result, 20.9 million tons of yearly crude steel production placed Türkiye 11th in the global steel output and 3rd in Europe. 15 % of steel produced in Türkiye is flat products, while the long products make the rest. The product composition and the general characteristics of steel production process led to an increase in ferroalloy consumption. Domestically consumed ferroalloys are especially ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon. As of today, ferroalloy production capacity of Türkiye is 173,800 tons/year; 161,500 tons of which is ferrochrome with high and low carbon grades, 7,300 tons of ferrosilicochrome and the rest is ferrosilicon (5,000 tons/year). Türkiye is one of leading ferrochrome producers in the world considering the above mentioned production figures. However, this production is mainly exported since Türkiye?s stainless steel production level is modest requiring low amounts of ferrochrome. The products of iron and steel industry in Türkiye require large quantities of other ferroalloys, which make Türkiye a major importer and exporter of ferroalloys. The aim of this work is to present production, consumption, import and export quantities of: ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, ferrotitanium and ferrovanadium of Türkiye, between 1990 and 2006.

Many of the large refrigeration plants used in, the cooling systems on deep South African gold mines are situated on surface where they are exposed to seasonally and diurnally varying climatic conditions, and to a diurnally varying demand for cooling made by the mine. It has been traditional to accommodate the seasonal variation in climate by manual control applied to the plants at appropriate times of the year, and the plants have normally been specified to conform passively to the diurnal variations. This paper introduces new strategies for the active automatic control of the plants on a diurnal cycle, and shows that attractive benefits in energy and chilled water resource management can be accrued through the use of these strategies. The results have been derived through the modelling and simulation of a representative refrigeration plant.

Grinding has been one of the areas of major development at Outokumpu's concentrators. During its early years the company used entirely rod and hall mills, but due to the high costs of metallic grinding it began the testing of autogenous grinding as early as the 1950s. In the late-1970s, the company's own modification for two stage autogenous grinding was ready for industrial use. Surprisingly late, in the 80s - 90s, an interest rose to check also the effects of grinding methods on flotation results. This paper firstly gives a short history of the development work of Outokumpu type autogenous grinding, called 'Outogenius'. The effects of some grinding methods on the process results of two nickel ores are then reviewed. The tests to date show notable effects of grinding methods on flotation.

IN the normal operation of a brass-rolling mill, sheet and strip has, for the most part, been finished in comparatively thin gauges, involving a substantial amount of coldwork and a considerable number of anneals. This condition has been disturbed by the prep0nderance of cartridge brass, which is not rolled to thin gauges, and particularly by brass for artillery cartridge cases, on which the mill may finish its work at a thickness between 0.400 and 0.900 in. Obviously, the amount of rolling and the number of anneals to which such a product can be subjected are small compared with strip that is carried to a thickness of a few hundredths of an inch. As a result, critical examination into the internal condition of metal has been made on an extensive scale at a stage of manufacture that would not, in normal times, have been chosen for complete inspection. Under these conditions, a type of defect has been recognized that is not seen at thinner gauges. It might be more accurate to call it the appearance of a defect, since it refers to an apparently laminated, discontinuous structure, which, in fact, does not exist as such, and disappears after suitable treatment. For this reason it has been called a phantom lamination, which the authors consider an appropriate term. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the phenomenon and the conditions of its occurrence and, at least tentatively, to discuss its nature and cause. Great numbers of phantoms may be found in 2: 1 brass, either hot-rolled or cold-rolled. They are also found in 70-30 brass, sometimes when hot-rolled and generally when cold-rolled. It is not believed that phantoms are confined to these alloys but this paper is limited to them for the purpose of description. HOT-ROLLED 2:I BRASS For illustration, therefore, a typical cake of hot-rolled 2: 1 brass has been chosen. This was rolled to a slab 7/8 in. thick, from a casting 5 in. thick by 24 in. wide by 18 in. high, which was believed to have been sound. After hot-rolling and cooling, the slab was sheared and a portion of such a shear cut is shown in Fig. 1. It would be difficult to convince anyone viewing this specimen that the metal was not unsound. The impression would be confirmed by the appearance of a tensile break, as shown in Fig. 2. This is an ordinary tensile-test piece from metal just described. Although there was nothing in its tensile strength or elongation that suggested unsoundness, it appeared run through with pipes and laminations. To question the reality of such a condition would imply questioning the obvious. But, considering the history of the metal, it w0uld be difficult to believe that it could be so bad as it appeared. It seemed reasonable, though, that if the defects were what they appeared to be, they could be traced back from the sheared or broken face.

THE textures of straight-rolled and of cross-rolled molybdenum were first determined with the aid of pole figures by Custers and Riemersma.' These authors have shown that for straight-rolling, the main texture was (100) [0111 with a considerable spread about the rolling direction. After cross-rolling a second texture was obtained in which there was a [111] axis perpendicular to the rolling plane, possessing a rotary symmetry. Recently Semchy-shen and Timmons2 in their study of preferred orientation of arc-cast molybdenum sheet obtained similar pole figures. In these two investigations, polycrystalline materials were used. In the main, the textures of molybdenum in these cases are qualitatively consistent with rolling textures of other body-centered cubic metals, such as iron and Fe-Si alloys." In the present investigation, single crystals of molybdenum were deformed by rolling with respect to specific crystallographic planes and directions. Since the deformation textures of polycrystalline aggregates have been related intimately to the behavior of individual grains,4 a study of possible correlations of final textures with respect to the initial orientations of the single crystals might conceivably lead to a better understanding of the textures. Annealing treatments were carried out after deformation in order to study the recrystallization characteristics as well as the recrystallization texture. Rolling of Single Crystals Single crystals of molybdenum (about 1/8 in. in diarn x 1-in. long), grown by the method previously described,5 were cold-rolled without intermediate anneals. Except for specimens MR-1 and MR-2, which were rolled at random in the preliminary test in order to find a proper rate of reduction, all other specimens were carefully documented as to their respective orientation before deformation by means of X-ray Laue back-reflection methods. A stereo-graphic projection was constructed from which it was possible to determine a particular plane and direction to be considered for rolling. Parallel flat surfaces were then polished metallographically with respect to a reference scratch on the specimen which was mounted in sealing wax. These flat surfaces contained the plane chosen for rolling. After etching, a Laue back-reflection photogram was again made of one of the flat surfaces to determine the exact plane of rolling. The initial orientations of all the specimens (specified by two elements for each crystal, direction of rolling and the pole of the rolling plane) are summarized in Fig. 1. The specimens were mounted in plasticene between two hardened Si-Fe plates. The sandwich was then rolled down, keeping the direction constant in the case of straight-rolling. In cross-rolling (MR-10, MR-11, and MR-12) the sandwich was rotated 90" after each pass so that every first and third pass contained the same rolling direction. Specimens MR-14, MR-15, and MR-16 were compression-rolled following the manner of Barrett." In these cases the direction of the sandwich through the rolls was changed by 3" to 5" for each pass until the specimens were rolled to the desired reduction in thickness. It was found that if extreme care was exercised in rolling, i. e., the amount of deformation per pass was extremely small, the specimens could be rolled to a large reduction in thickness. The rate of reduction used, with a single exception of MR-1. was generally 0.001 in. per 10 passes. Thus, it took about 800 passes to reduce a specimen to a final reduction in thickness of 87 to 98 pct. The results of rolling are shown in Table I. Cold-Rolling Textures The final orientations were determined by the conventional Laue transmission method," using molybdenum radiation, with or without a zirconium filter. Pole figures were plotted from (1101 and (200) reflections in which three degrees of intensity— heavy, medium, and light—were determined visually. Si-Fe single crystals in a number of selected orientations were cold rolled 70 pct and analyzed to obtain quantitative (110) pole figures. Stable end orientations were ddetermined, and the effect of orientation on deformation behavior was investigated. WHEN single crystals are cold rolled sufficiently, they rotate into end orientations that are stable or unchanged in position with additional deformation. The end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals, positioned in holes in copper to limit lateral flow and to simulate polycrystalline conditions during deformation, were determined by Barrett and Levenson.' They found that the sum of the end orientations, a pole figure for all the crystals studied, reproduced the essential features of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron. In. an investigation of Fe-Si alloys, Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl' observed little effect of silicon content on the textures of heavily cold-rolled samples. Since alloys with less than 4 pct Si are known to have the same slip systems as iron," it seems logical to expect that they would also have the same end orientations as those for iron. Whereas Barrett and Levenson in their study of single crystals were interested in the problem of the origin of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron, the present authors are more interested in the final cold-rolled textures of single crystals of Si-Fe from the point of view of their relationship to subsequent recrystallization phenomena which will be reported in another paper. Nevertheless, such points as the tendency of an end orientation not to rotate (stability), the tendency of a pole concentration to spread out, and the tendency of the crystal to widen during cold rolling become interesting separately when the initial orientations are selected already in end orientations. Also the initial orientations having a [I101 axis parallel with the transverse direction, which include the two end orientations (111) [Ti21 and (001) [110], comprise a series that needs further clarification regarding the way such crystals rotate during deformation. Finally the present use of quantitative pole figure methods* represents an advance over the X-ray photographic method employed by Barrett and Levenson in their work on end orientations. The present investigation provides information on the cold-rolling behavior of two groups of Si-Fe crystals: 1-—crystals initially oriented in recognized end orientations for iron crystals with a [I101 direction parallel with the rolling direction, and 2— crystals initially oriented with a [I101 direction 90" to the rolling direction and in the rolling plane. For the second group, there is a 90" range between the (001) [110] orientation and the (110) [001] orientation. Since the 35" portion of this range from (110) [OOl] to (111) Di2] was included in a previous investigation," only the remaining 55" portion from (111) fii2] to (001) [I101 needs further consideration. Also, since both (111) [xi21 and (001) [I101 are end orientations for iron crystals,' there might be a critical orientation* or orientation range be- • W. W. Martin and C. G. Upon further deformation, these two orientations rotate to produce a final texture consisting of (001) [1101 and (111) [?i2] components. The end orientations obtained are discussed in connection with the work of Barrett and Levenson, while the observed tendency for lateral flow of crystals in these orientations is treated in terms of the theory of Hibbard and Yen.' Lateral flow according to the theory increases with deviation of the plane containing the rolling direction and the slip direction from a position perpendicular to the plane of rolling. This paper presents the ingredients com-~osing a type of oil-base mud that has been successfully used in drilling oil horizons in California, the effect of ingredient concentrations on physical properties, methods of handling at the well and possible advantages of a waterless drilling fluid with excellent plastering properties. Introduction An oil-base mud is a rotary drilling fluid in which oil has been substituted for water as the principal liquid ingredient. In recent years such a mud has been developed and used successfully for drilling the oil horizons of wells in various Calilornia fields. There are several types of oil-base mud, but only the type that is currently used to any appreciable extent will be considered at this time. The oil-base drilling-mud compositions used by Shell Oil Company, Incorporated have been covered by several patent applications on which patents are expected to issue at an early date. The purpose of this paper is to present data on the fundamental design of the mud; the ingredients used and their specifications; the effect of ingredient concentration on physical properties; the selection of the proper mud; the facilities needed for handling the mud; and a general discussion on drilling with oil-base mud. In view of the early stage of development of oil-base mud, the great number of vari- ables, and the almost unlimited possible combinations of these. variables, which in turn require extensive laboratory study, there are certain irregularities and omis. sions in the data presented here. However, it is believed that sufficient data are at hand to permit a fairly complete analysis of the characteristics of oil-base muds. In view of the excellent plastering properties of oil-base mud when properly proportioned, its use should: (I) minimize the possibility of impairing the natural flow potentialities of the producing horizon such as that resulting from infiltration of water from water-base muds; (2) permit smaller clearances for setting liners, since the mud sheath has no appreciable thickness; (3) eliminate the possibility of clogging the perforations of the liner with thick mud sheath; (4) facilitate the removal of the mud sheath from the walls of the hole, for its mud sheath has no appreciable strength; (5) assist in drilling through formations, such as "heaving shale," where water wetting appears to be a source of difficulty. (6) permit cores to be obtained without contamination from drilling water. Control of coal dust has long been an important aspect in the conventional mining of coal; the main reasons being from a health and disaster standpoint. With the advent, of mechanized longwall mining, the control of dust has required more attention due to the high extraction rate common to most longwall systems. The purpose of this paper will be to describe the dust abatement activities of the longwall operation at Sunnyside. Kaiser-Steel Corporation has three mires located at Sunnyside, Utah, with a total production averaging 6,800 tons of clean coal per day. Of this 6,800 tons, 71 % is mined with continuous miners, the remaining 29% coming from one longwall unit located in No. 3 Mine. Our first longwall panel was started in November, 1961. In October, 1966, we started mining our seventh panel. The present panel is located in the Upper Sunnyside Seam which averages five feet in thickness, but does get as low as 51 inches. The seam pitches 5.5% in this vicinity. The roof is generally good and is comprised of 10 inches of shale cap rocs overlain with sandy shale and sandstone. The floor is sandy shale and is quite undulating in nature. The present panel is 3,800 feet in length with a face of 670 feet. The major equipment employed on our longwall unit is a 125 H.F. Anderton Shearer-Loader, British Jeffrey Diamond armored conveyors and a Dowty self-advancing-roof support system. The Anderton Shearer in use on our longwall unit has a 60" diameter x 27" cutting drum. During the shearing cycle, it traverses the face at 20 feet per minute with a cutting rate of 7.5 tons/minute.

Este sistema de control de costos se estructura como sistema de contabilidad y reportes por responsabilidad, donde es necesaria la función de un supervisor como el establecimiento de ciertos controles adicionales. Entre estos controles se encuentra el sistema de órdenes de trabajo donde todos los cargos de mantenimiento son hechos registrados a través de un código que identifique el originador de los mismos. Finalmente, como complemento del sistema de costos, se agrega el sistema de presupuestos donde los cálculos se ajustan con el volumen de producción.

Economy in blast-furnace practice depends largely upon efficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of the furnace. If efficient work is not done in the shaft the hearth and bosh will not function properly. A condition may be readily imagined where the particles of ore in the shaft are so large that the time entailed in the descent of these materials into the bosh is not sufficient to permit proper reduction and preparation prior to the time the ore enters the bosh of the furnace. Another condition may be pictured where the density of the stock column and the flow of stock is such that the ore will take one course and the gas another. Both of these examples will result in insufficient contact between the gas and the ore. Unreduced ore will reach the hearth, and gas which has not been efficiently oxidized will reach the stock line. The result is the use of an excess of carbon in the smelting process. An example of the result of inefficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of a blast furnace is shown by the curves in Figure 1.

Nos últimos anos a thyssenkrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico – CSA tem passado por uma série de mudanças no que diz respeito ao perfil de qualidade das matérias-primas, principalmente em relação à piora de qualidade do minério de ferro extraído do quadrilátero ferrífero em Minas Gerais, o qual compõe 100% da carga metálica utilizada pela CSA. Uma das principais mudanças observadas foi o aumento do teor de fósforo na carga metálica (sinter produto, pelota e granulado), tornando-se necessários estudos para minimizar os impactos na elevação de P no gusa, tais como, desenvolvimento de novos fundentes e aditivos. O fósforo é um elemento que traz poucas alterações nos processos de Metalurgia da Redução (Sinterização, Coqueria e Alto forno) e existem métodos eficazes de redução destas alterações [1], porém é extremamente prejudicial à qualidade, produtividade e custos de uma Aciaria, principalmente em produções de aços que exigem baixo teor de fósforo em sua composição [2]. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar os esforços realizados pela Sinterização em relação à redução do teor de fósforo no Sinter Produto e consequentemente no Gusa, por meio de simulações de qualidade envolvendo novos fundentes e aditivos.

Neste trabalho, foram estudados os efeitos da irradiação de uma superfície polida do aço inoxidável tipo ASTM F138 com laser de pulsos ultracurtos. As irradiações foram realizadas variando-se a velocidade de varredura do laser, ou seja, a taxa de sobreposição espacial de pulsos. Foi observado que após a irradiação houve uma visível mudança na coloração da amostra. Também foi verificado que com o aumento da taxa de sobreposição de pulsos a superfície tendeu a tornar-se preta, ou seja, absorvedora de luz. Com essa técnica, pode-se realizar marcações com alto contraste sem que haja formação de camadas de óxidos, nitretos ou alterações microestruturais no metal, o que é importante para um material com a precisão que um implante exige.

The objective of the present endeavor is to compare the performance of a pile raft system in foundation sand subjected to lateral loads. To study the behavior of pile raft system in sand a laboratory test was conducted on small scale model foundation system. The raft and pile was modeled by square concrete foundation of 250 mm x 250 mm x 15 mm in length, breadth and thickness and 25mm diameter and 250mm long circular pile located at the center of the raft. The system was tested under static lateral loads of 6.25N, 12.5N, 18.75N and 25 N respectively resting on dry Kasai River sand. A vertical surcharge pressure of 1.5kPa (10 kg) was applied on top of the model raft for each case. The results of the model tests have been simulated by a general purpose 3-D finite element software and the model has been validated with experimental results. The moments of the pile obtained from the model tests and those predicted by the numerical analyses for all the lateral loads matches reasonably well. For matching the trend of bending moments obtained from experiments, validation with theoretical results have been done with the help of Matlock and Reese (1960) approach for a single value of lateral loading. Moreover, a parametric study has been conducted with 5mX5mX0.3m raft size with 0.5m diameter and 5 meter long pile with increasing number of piles namely 2, 5 and 9 respectively to study the response in terms of moment and lateral deformation under available earthquake loadings, like Loma Prieta (1989) and Darfield Christchurch (2010). Bending moments of piles and load deformation curves for lateral loading have been studied for each case in which it is observed that the bending moments of pile significantly reduces (around 4 times) as the number of pile is increased to two, but it decreases to a nearly constant value (it saturates) as the number of pile is increased to five and nine. Moreover, the lateral deformation of piled raft system drastically reduces (around 2.4 times) for two pile system, and it saturates to a constant value with five and nine pile system. All these results indicate the constancy of stiffness irrespective of the number of piles in the piled raft.
