The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. Underground construction often requires working within a very congested urban environment, including excavating shafts adjacent to highly sensitive and multistoried structures, sometimes even within such structures. Shafts adjacent to heavily loaded column footings are often required due to space constraints. Invariably, footing surcharges must be considered during the design of shaft rock reinforcement. Rockwedge stability evaluation reveals that column surcharges can greatly impact the ability to meet the desired factor of safety. Design methodologies and examples to deal with these special circumstances are presented.

Otago Schist in the Mount Patriarch, High Burn and Cameron Creek areas of northwest Otago grades from textural grade IIA in the east to textural grade III in the west. The entire region is of the actinolite-pumpellyite metamorphic facies. Lithologies in the area are interbedded turbidite sequences comprising pelite and psammite together with pebble conglomerate, greenschist and metachert horizons. The mineral assemblage of the schist is typically quartz-albite-epidote-actinolite-pumpellyite-chlorite-stilpnomelane-calcite. A good foliation is well defined in the area and is predominantly parallel to bedding, except in hinges of mesoscopic isoclinal folds. The structure of the area appears to be defined by a large southwest plunging isoclinal fold defined by bedding with a steeply dipping axial planar foliation. Kink folding and dextral strike-slip faulting in the area postdates the ductile phase of deformation. Pods of rhodonite, rhodochrosite, spessartine garnet, coombsite, caryopilite, Mnstilpnomelane and Ni-Cu-Zn sulphides were found in concordant metachert layers in the Mount Patriarch area. Metachert was also found in float in the Cameron Creek area. Malachite occurrences relating to copper mineralisation were also noted in a green metachert horizon on the eastern flank of Mount Patriarch. The coombsite, in only the third observation worldwide, is the most Fe-rich variety reported.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1986 was $405.2 million, a slight decrease from that of 1985. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite, crushed marble, and ferroalloys; third b fire clay; fifth in masonry cement and lime; sixth in total clays; and seventh in recovered sulfur. Alabama ranked 19th nationally in value of nonfuel minerals produced. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and stone were the major commodities produced.

High-Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is one of the efficient methods for increasing the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate for pellet feed production. HPGR grinding mechanism implies that material should compressed between the two rolls, therefore layer of material must be able to resist required pressure for achieving suitable grinding conditions. In this study, by doing SSA increasing tests with pilot HPGR, the effects of silica reduction on SSA increasing results were investigated. For this purpose, HPGR tests were performed on an Iranian magnetite concentrate before and after reverse flotation silica reduction tests. Based on the laboratory test results, silicates have been concentrated in two fraction sizes of the sample comprises coarser than 150 microns in form of quartz and finer than 7 microns in form of iron silicates. These silicates have been effected on reduction of concentrate bed pressure resistance by creating a pasty and sticky mud. In this condition, HPGR cannot work properly and operation results are not acceptable. According to flotation silica reduction tests, with 90 per cent weight recovery, concentrate Fe grade is increased from 67.8 per cent to 69.5 per cent and SiO2 content is reduced from 1.98 per cent to 0.9 per cent and especially for lower than 7 microns fraction size, as a critical fraction, SiO2 content decreased from 4.45 per cent to 2.35 per cent. HPGR tests were performed on 8 per cent moisture in 4 N/mm2 specific force and according to the results after silica reduction HPGR operation conditions are optimised. Results showed that the working gap increased from 7 to 10.5 mm and specific throughput of material raised from 180 ts/hm3 to 250 ts/hm3 , and SSA increased by 300 cm2 /gr in a single pass.

This paper traces the evolution of the cast-in-place industry. Emphasis is on developments in the United States; however, since there has been a substantial fusion of US and European processes, notable European developments are also discussed.

"While it might seem like heresy to suggest that ""taxation"" can be a source of financing, never the less some generous tax rules can considerably enhance the tax savings pertaining to a particular expenditure or project. A basic tax knowledge, and careful tax planning, can optimize government participation in a project. INTRODUCTIONIn trying to identify sources of financing for a project, ""government"" as a source of funding is normally thought of in terms of government grants, loan guarantees, interest rate buy downs, property tax waivers, hydro subsidies, and so on. Generally, such concessions are somewhat difficult to obtain, especially in the current period of apparent fiscal restraint. One source of government funding which should not be overlooked is the income tax regime, and, at the provincial level, the various provincial mining tax regimes.While the taxpayer would not normally view a tax system as a potential source of government financing, nevertheless various federal and provincial rules applicable to the mining industry can offer attractive tax deductions - and tax savings - with respect to particular expenditures. In fact, it is not unusual for a civil servant to refer to a tax deduction as a tax ""subsidy"". For example, in the right circumstances, the cost of a smelter expansion in New Brunswick would cost the operator only 31 cents on the dollar, with the federal and provincial governments paying for the other 69 cents by foregoing tax revenues (Table I). In a sense, such tax savings could be compared to a government grant equal to 69% of project costs. Of course, not every project expenditure will generate that degree of government funding. The fact of the matter is that the percentages of tax savings attached to different expenditures cover a wide range, depending on a complex mix of factors. The point to understand is that the tax rules can offer some valuable savings, even after tax reform, and that a basic knowledge of the tax rules can yield some fruitful rewards."

Agitation requirements in oxidation autoclaves can vary widely depending on the mineralogy of the feed material and the specific process selected. Before selecting an agitation system it is important that the client specify the desired throughput, mineralogy, chemistry, kinetics, compartments, overall retention time, and the desired oxygen utilization. In selecting the agitation system, the factors mentioned above as well as oxygen solubility, oxygen mass transfer coefficients, and specific power are evaluated. Much research effort has been directed toward open tank systems for fermentation and oxidation processes. However, for high pressure autoclave oxidation processes little information is available. In this review the author's experience in the autoclave industry and some of the available literature are utilized to compare the installed power per unit volume with some of the methods proposed for open tank oxidation. Equations that appear to give results close to that experienced in the industry have been identified. Further work is required in this area to develop a higher degree of confidence in the ability to predict the power required for any given case.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la situación del carbón peruano, así como las mejoras para impulsar su producción a nivel nacional. Para ello, es necesario una mayor facilidad en el empleo de la electricidad y de los combustibles líquidos y gaseosos derivados del petróleo como en las cocinas domésticas, así como la estimulación en la sustitución del petróleo por el carbón en diversos usos. Asimismo, el Estado desarrolla un plan donde se beneficie a los mineros particulares de producción de carbón a través de asistencia especializada, instalación y operación en el puerto de Chimbote, así como de una planta de lavado y briquetación de los carbones de la citada región del Santa, y la adquisición de locomotoras y material rodante especial para el transporte económico del carbón en el ferrocarril que comunica las minas de carbón con el citado puerto de Chimbote.

Two versions of a VF transceiver to aid in location of trapped miners has been developed and tested. The belt worn model was produced in both transmitter and transceiver configurations. In addition, a quantity of the belt worn models were fabricated using aluminum wire instead of copper in order to reduce unit weight. Ten prototypes of a battery cap model VF transceiver were also fabricated demonstrating further unit size and weight reduction while maintaining electrical performance. Samples of- both versions were tested environmentally and the test data is included in this report. While both versions of the VF transceiver are similar electrically, and are constructed using convential manufacturing techniques, the battery cap model realizes a lower total weight, smaller volume and production cost than the belt worn version. Operationally, the battery cap model assures that the VF transceiver will always be with the miner.

The basic objectives of mine roadways are to provide sufficient cross sections in order to meet the needs of accommodation of equipment, transport, personnel travel and ventilation. However, many roadways become damaged to the extent of needing maintenance, generally dinting, and in some cases requiring re-ripping. The damaging of a roadway is a result of several factors including geological properties of surrounding strata, method of roadway formation, type and spacing of support and so on. Among these factors, strata conditions play an important effect on the stability of roadway. Weak rocks cause excessive roadway closures and water softens some rocks and promotes the closure problem. In this paper, a scientific discussion on the effect of water on the stability of roadways is given on the basis of results obtained by means of in-situ investigation and laboratory rock tests.

The market potential f or these advanced engineering alloys is substantial, and their impact on traditional zinc die casting alloy consumption is particuarly important. The ZA alloys, in offering increased performance through zinc castings produced at low cost and by a wide range of moulding processes, have unlocked a multitude of new end-use applications.Following a review of the development of ZA alloys, of their key properties and of their performance characteristics, the numerous challenges that the alloys present to the zinc industry and to the R&D community are discussed.IntroductionZinc is anodic to steel and has a low, uniform rat e of corrosion; it has a low melting point, can be cast with precision , and is readily finished. In addition to its use in protecting steel and in the production of a wide range of castings, zinc is employed : (1) to produce brass, high-strength aluminum alloys and magnesium die casting alloys, (2) in the wrought state for coinage and in building products, particularly as roofing materials , and (3) as an oxide, in the rubber industry, in ceramics, glass, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and as the starting materials for many chemicals.Zinc die castings are produced with accuracy at high speed, at low cost, are easily finished and have excel1ent mechnical properties . Car fuel economy, changes in automobile styling, competition from other materials, increased sophistication of design and miniaturization have all led to a dramatic change in the volume of zinc consumed for die-casting applications. This has been particularly notable in the United States. Throughout the 19505 and the I960s, casting was the fastest growing major use of zinc; it was firmly established, accounting for 35% of the total zinc consumption(1), By 1983, the volume of zinc being purchased for casting applications had dropped to less than 20% of all zinc consumed in the United States. In the western world(2), consumption for zinc casting application s is currently at about 15%; being nearly equal to the zinc consumed by the brass industry. Coating applications dominate with a consumption of more than 40% of the total market."

The effects of eight independent variables on froth flotation product yield, ash content, and coal recovery were studied using laboratory batch flotation of 0.6 am x 0 coal. The eight flotation variables investigated were air feed rate, pre-dispersion of collector oil, impeller speed, product collection time, initial solids concentration, collector conditioning time, frother (methyl isobutyl carbinol) concentration, and collector (No. 2 fuel oil) dosage. The two-level Plackett-Burman screening design and the three-level Box-Behnken design were used. Within the ranges studied, air feed rate had no effect on product yield. Pre-dispersion of collector oil, impeller speed, product collection time, initial solids concentration, and collector conditioning time showed only minor effects on the product yield and quality. Frother concentration (mg/L) in the process water and collector oil dosage (g/kg) were shown to be the dominant independent variables in coal froth flotation. Flotation experiments that vary initial solids concentration at constant frother dosage (g/kg) confound the effects of frother concentration (mg/L) and solids concentration. The dominating effects of frother concentration and oil dosage on coal recovery and froth product ash content are illustrated with three-dimensional plots. The relationship between froth product ash and coal recovery is also clearly illustrated by the flotation data.

The midwestern area referred to is the Illinois basin. The coals presently worked are mainly the No. 5 and No. 6 coal seams which vary in thickness from five to eleven feet. Present average of the more important No. 6 id about nine feet. The coal can vary considerably in toughness within the same mine with some coal perhaps rashing very easily and other coal being extremely difficult to cut. Top is generally well laminated shales with some fortunate areas having limestone roof. There are local areas with troublesome top of poorly laminated shales, shale with slickensides and shale intermingled with small partings and traces of coal. The bottoms are generally one to three feet of clay which softens readily on exposure to moisture. The mines are dry although some water is released and collects from rapid penetration of the seam by continuous miners. However, there are locally wet areas. Most of this material refers to mines of the Freeman Coal Mining Corporation. The mining operations written about are underground mines in southern and central Illinois.

The Canadian government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002 and, prior to ratification, committed to equitable distribution of the burden of implementation. The Federal government's Large Final Emitters group is working with industry to develop covenants that will consider the unique nature of the company's operations and not unreasonably burden any one sector or company. Ensuring equitable distribution must consider local, national and international issues. From a Canadian iron ore producers perspective, the fact that most of the iron ore production in the world is in countries that have no Kyoto commitment is a critical issue. Another issue unique to this sector is the increased addition of fluxing agents in iron ore pellet production which has shifted some process related greenhouse gas emissions from steel producers to iron ore producers. While the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol are primarily environmental, the economic implications for Canadian industry are not trivial. For decades Canadian companies have been actively improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to maintain a global competitive position. Production of iron ore pellets is an energy intensive process and the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) is the largest Canadian producer. In 2002 IOCC identified energy and Kyoto Protocol implementation as critical risk factors for their organization and appointed a full time Energy Manager. In January 2003, IOCC initiated a comprehensive process for identifying energy cost reduction opportunities and established an Energy Master plan. This process included:

Slab-buckle failures in coal sequences involve thin slab deformation in strata dipping parallel to the footwall, and are a consequence of both unloading and the weak nature of the thinly bedded rock mass. Methods of modelling and predicting such occurrences include: +        a conceptual model using a base friction table, +        a mathematical model using the Euler solution for column and beam bending (after Goodman, 1980), and +        computer analysis techniques such as UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code after Cundall and Hart, 1993).   Slab-buckle failures have the potential to seriously disrupt production because of their volume and rapidity, and to endanger both equipment and personnel working on the pit floor.   In July 2004 a large slab-buckle failure occurred overnight after a new batter and bench had been formed at the Malvern Hills Opencast Mine in inland Canterbury. This involved the entire length of the pit (85m along strike) when a 2m thick intact slab with a total volume of ~3500m3 translated down dip 6.2m on the base of a thin coal seam to form a pronounced buckle at the toe. The coal measures consist of finely laminated mudrocks with multiple coal seams of varying thickness dipping ~45¦ to the southeast, and the opencast mine had been designed with footwall batters formed parallel to bedding with a vertical bench separation of 15m.   Back analysis of the Malvern Hills failure was necessary to investigate the controls on footwall instability, and for future mine design. An engineering geological model was created and samples of the slab material and failure surface were collected and tested to establish the required parameters for use in the Euler solution for column and beam bending. Back analysis using the Euler solution provided unrealistic results that overestimated the overall length of a stable slope by more than 10 times.   No further large scale slab-buckle failures have developed at the mine site, in part because of the slow rate of coal extraction, but precautionary drainage of the footwall slopes has been undertaken to improve overall batter stability. The location of the slab-buckle failure on a critically positioned pre-sheared thin coal seam with full hydrostatic head is considered the most probable cause of the July 2004 failure, rather than inherent instability of the generic bench and batter arrangement adopted. The use of a precedent-based engineering geology approach to future mine design is considered the most appropriate solution in the circumstances.

MINERAL dressing is an industrial art concerned with the treatment and separation of solids suspended in fluids. Knowledge and evaluation of the area of solid-fluid interface is important in all cases except those involving only large pieces of solid. In fact, many problems relating to comminution, to flotation, to thickening and classification, could be dealt with more rationally if the interfacial area were known. A number of methods have been proposed for the measurement of the surface of certain finely divided solids. Among them are methods using rate of dissolution of the solid,7 its magnetic remanence,3 the turbidity of its suspension,8 and the character of the size distribution of the material.9 The first two are limited to one mineralogical species per sample; the third has certain optical limitations, especially for mineral mixtures, and the fourth is based on an extrapolation of uncertain validity. The need of a better and more general method of surface determination has long been felt, therefore. The method of P. H. Emmett,4 based upon the low-temperature adsorption of vapors, appears to fulfill this need. This method consists in determining the amount of nitrogen that is adsorbed by a given sample of solid at the temperature of boiling nitrogen. The more surface there is on the solid-both internal and external-the more nitrogen is abstracted. In actual operation, the method is somewhat less simple than has been stated so far, in that the nitrogen is adsorbed in an incomplete layer, the completeness and thickness of the layer being related to the pressure of the nitrogen in contact with the sample .2 This circumstance makes it necessary to determine the nitrogen adsorption for three or more values of the nitrogen pressure. APPARATUS In the Richards Mineral Dressing Laboratories an Emmett apparatus has been built and tested (Figs. 1 and 2). A mechanical vacuum pump B and a mercury diffusion pump A work in series to give a high vacuum. The sample, placed in bulb D, can be evacuated by this pump train by suitable operation of the stopcocks in the glass tubing that connects the various parts of the apparatus. C is a McLeod gauge, used to ascertain the order of magnitude of the vacuum obtained, and not for accurate pressure measurements. Pressure measurements are made in the mercury manometer F and gas-volume measurements in the gas burette E.
