"Comprehensive utilization of Bi and Sn from the tin-associated polymetallic tailings by “gravity separation – flotation combination process” has been studied, which was verified that the novel process is an effective method to deal with the high content pyrrhotite tin-associated polymetallic tailings. In this investigation, ore property analysis and magnetism analysis of pyrrhotite were conducted to research and develop reasonable beneficiation flowsheet. The results of ore property analysis present that pyrrhotite was not closely related to bismuth and tin minerals. Particle size analysis results indicated that pyrrhotite was mainly in the form of fine particles. The magnetic analysis results show that pyrrhotite was distribution in all the three types of pyrrhotite in a single mining area, which indicated that variable magnetism of with different crystal structure pyrrhotite. The process of “low intensity magnetic separation - high intensity magnetic separation” shown an excellent adaption for the high content pyrrhotite tin-associated polymetallic ore compared with the single flotation process based on the magnetism variable of pyrrhotite. The results of whole process test indicated that a bismuth coarse concentrate assaying 5.63% of Bi at 81.77% recovery was obtained, which treat the conditions for the Bi-S separation flotation. In addition, the content of sulfur in the tin concentrate decreased from 2.5% to 1.5%, which provided a new reference for other tin-associated polymetallic tailings. INTRODUCTION Tin has been applied extensively in catalytic chemistry, gas sensors, tin plating, and plumbing. Tin-bearing polymetallic ores have been the important deposit types to recycle tin with the rapid depletion of mineral resources. Discussion of the paper of D. Foster Hewett, Bulletin To. 27, March, 1909, pp. 291 to 310. JAMES F. KEMP, New York, N. Y.:-Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally dis¬covered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit essentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection. Vanadium was first discovered and recognized as a distinct element in the slags obtained in smelting the titaniferous magnetites at Taberg, Sweden. For a long time, therefore, we looked upon the titaniferous magnetites as its hone. Analyses proved, years ago, that it was present in the ores of this type in New Jersey and in the Adirondacks. It was quite rarely determined, but when looked for it was, I think, invariably found, although the Amount seldom exceeded 0.5 per cent. of V,05., In just what combination it exists in the titaniferous ores is uncertain. One might imagine V2O3 replacing some of the Fe2O3 of magnetite; or, since in the lead series vanadates and phosphates are closely akin, one might wonder if a lime-vanadate could take the place of apatite. Yet no lime-vanadate has been found in nature, and apatite itself is usually rare in the titaniferous ores. When percentage-curves are plotted for a series of analyses of the ores, the line of vanadic oxide shows a curious sympathetic behavior with the line of chromic oxide;' but the data are somewhat limited, and no compound has sug¬gested itself which throws light on the matter. Continued Discussion of the Paper of Messrs. von Jonstorff, Blair, Dillner and Stead, presented at the New York Meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, October, 1904.* (Bethlehem Meeting, February, 1906.) CLEMENS C. JONES, Richmond, Va. (communication to the Secretary+) :-In the chapter of this paper entitled "Method for the Determination of Phosphorus," by Andrew A. Blair, a form of the reductor used by Mr. Blair is illustrated. This form was employed by me in my earliest experiments, and abandoned after my adoption of the final apparatus described in my paper on the subject in 1889. The results reported by Mr. Blair are very closely accordant; but my experience was that, in the use of this form, a loss of the solution, amounting to almost a cubic centimeter, was occasioned by minute bubbles of hydrogen rising to the surface, and there exploding. My final reductor was designed to prevent this loss; and the most satisfactory results were obtained with a reductor having the open cup replaced by a bulb-shaped receptacle, provided with a glass stopper, similar to that of a separatory funnel of similar capacity, as suggested in a foot-note in my original paper. In my experience, the use of this later form of reductor repeatedly gave duplicate results which were, coincident to the fourth decimal place. R. W. RAYMOND, New York, N. The Akjoujt Project is operated by MORAK SA, a company incorporated in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. MORAK is jointly owned by General Gold International SA (A wholly owned subsidiary of General Gold Resources NL.), SAMIN, and the International Finance Corporation. The project was devel­oped to treat approximately 2.1 million tonnes of TORCO (Treatment of Refractory Copper Ores) tailings containing an average 3.2gAu/t, and 0.75%Cu/t. The process involves the use of ammoniacal cyanidation for gold extraction, and conventional carbon adsorption, and eventual desorption, of gold values. This is believed to be only the second commercial application of this leach chemistry in the world. The other being a small vat leach operation on the Paris Mine Dumps. (This operation was described by Mr M Ruane in a paper to a previous Randol Forum.) Initial work on the process, and the Akjoujt process design assumed that the reaction involved was anaerobic. This paper describes the operating experience, plant trial, and eventual installation which has lead MORAK to the conclusion that the process is not anaerobic, but requires oxygen, or an oxidant to proceed.

The maximum oxygen intakes of samples of about 30 Bantu, weighing less than 50 kg from different tribal groups (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan) were measured on a treadmill. The mean maximum oxygen intake of the 164 men was 2,12 litresjmin and only 18 men (11 per cent of the sample) had maximum oxygen intakes of 2,5 litres/min or above (the minimum requirement for such tasks as shovelling rocks and tramming it). The samples of the different tribes differ in age, but when the age effect is taken into account then there were no significant differences between tribes in maximum oxygen intakes. An incidental finding was that both age and body weight correlated significantly with the maximum oxygen intakes of these underweight subjects. Not one of the subjects who weighed less than 45 kg or who was older than 40 years had maximum oxygen intakes high enough to permit their being able to do strenuous work underground. It is clear therefore that Bantu who weigh less than 45 kg or are older than 40 years should not be employed on such strenuous tasks as shovelling rock and tramming it.

This paper examines the potential for controlling longwall-induced subsidence by pneumatically backstowing waste rock into the void created by mining. The paper also examines scheduling the process as a unit operation of the mining activity. Based on a review of background literature and interviews with representatives of various mining companies, public-interest groups and state and federal regulatory agencies, a hypothetical case-study evaluation of pneumatic stowing at a southwestern Pennsylvania mine was conducted. The study indicated that current stowing technology cannot keep pace with the production potential of longwall systems in the United States. Further, at the mine used in this case study, concomitant stowing would reduce subsidence by only 50% of what would normally be incurred during full longwall caving, and the longwall coal-production rate would decrease from 3,630 t (4,000 st) per shift in the nonstowing case to 1,360 t (1,500 st) in the stowing case. A preliminary cost analysis reveals that pneumatic stowing would add from $5.79 to $11.57 per t ($5.25 to $10.50 per st) to the operating cost of producing coal at the case-study site.

The solvent extraction separation of iron from a zinc sulfate medium using DEHPA was investigated. After loading, the ferric ions were reduced in the organic phase using metallic zinc. The ferrous ions produced could be easily stripped into a sulfate solution with pH values in the range of 1.4 to 2.0. The small, laboratory scale pilot system used in this study allowed for continuous cycling of the organic and strip aqueous solutions. It was possible to establish and evaluate a series of steady state conditions under selected operating paiameters. The effects of processing parameters such as solution chemistry, flow rates, zinc metal loading and pH on iron recovery and efficiency were also evaluated. Under proper conditions, it was possible to remove about 5 g/L iron from the organic phase in one stage and to produce a concentrated iron sulfate strip solution containing ferrous ion concentrations in the range of 90 to 130 g/L. Preliminary feasibility tests were also made on electrowinning metallic iron from the strip solutions and crystallizing ferrous sulfate as a means of making a marketable iron product.

Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.

The large body of knowledge about the relation between chemical process efficiency and mineralogical features is of only limited use. The profession ought to try to improve the methods of using information as well as adding to the knowledge. One attempt isòdescribed. Correlations between process efficiency factors and the mineralogical features of low- grade concentrates have been developed from both a theoretical analysis and experimental measurements. The ultimate recovery of a reactive phase in an inert matrix can be calcu- lated from simple measurements of the particle size, porosity and pore size of the concentrate, and the grain size of the reactive mineral., The rate of recovery, up to 98% recovery, can be calculated from simple measurements of particle size, porosity, proportion of reactive mineral and tortuosity. Some details are given. The correlations are of potential use in process selection and preliminary design. Satisfactory predictions have been made for near-ideal systems. Improvements in the measurement of pore size and tests on more realistic materials are required. The ultimate benefit of the correlations will be determined by the magnitude and frequency of the effects of mineralogical features other than those specified above.

This paper discusses the application of Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machine teleoperation in combination with a guidance system for single operator control of multiple IJIDs. A system accomplishing these goals has been tested at Copper Cliff North Mine of Inco Limited. This development uses a high-speed, high-capacity production network to teleoperate an LHD during loading and dumping by using 3D video and radio remote control. Following loading, the operator dispatches the LHD using an automatic guidance system to traverse the drifts to the orepass. Remote dumping is done at the ore pass and then the machine returns to repeat the procedure. This has significant productivity gains and improvements in safety. Productivity is improved because operators are involved only in the loading and dumping part of the process. This frees the operators to utilize their time more effectively, loading or dumping a particular machine, while other machines with guidance systems continue to work travelling and/or automatically dumping ore in the ore passes. Safety is improved as the operator is located on a remote control station. Automatic dumping will be incorporated as a future development.

O descarte deste material é realizado na entrada da Linha de Galvanização Contínua (LGC) da CSN-PR, sendo o processo de descarte feito de forma manual baseado em critérios visuais, acarretando em diferentes resultados por turno de operação, assim como o descarte desnecessário de material bom como sucata na maioria dos casos. Este trabalho aborda o estudo e desenvolvimento de um projeto conduzido através da metodologia do Lean Seis Sigma, automatizando a decisão do descarte e atingindo à máxima utilização do material dentro da especificação de espessura, diminuindo assim o trecho fora de bitola descartado como sucata na entrada da LGC, o que afetava diretamente o indicador de Rendimento Metálico da linha.

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo buscar um melhor entendimento dos fatores que influenciam de forma significativa nas propriedades mecânicas do vergalhão 1350AA, avaliando especificamente a influência da temperatura de bobinamento. Foram retiradas amostras de seis bobinas e então submetidas à diferentes temperaturas de recozimento por um período específico e analisadas mecanicamente e microscopicamente. Os ensaios de tração mostraram que o alumínio 1350 AA sofre uma influência significativa da temperatura, cujo comportamento foi muito similar ao apresentado na literatura. Constatou-se que o fenômeno de recuperação ocorreu de forma mais significativa a temperaturas elevadas. O trabalho permitiu concluir que é necessário um resfriamento mais eficiente no vergalhão para que a variação de LRT seja minimizada.

Multi-use pad operators require an efficient and economic method to destroy cyanide in their process residues so new material can be stored on the pad and leached. Operators of the dedicated or single-use pads require an effective cyanide destruction method for pad closure. Cyanide destruction can be accomplished by utilizing oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide or calcium hypochlorite, or by utilizing ferrous sulfate which sequesters the cyanide in strong acid dissociable complex. Ferrous sulfate can be the preferred method of cyanide destruction because it is a less costly chemical, reaction rates are almost immediate and unlike oxidants, it can penetrate the total depth of a pile without being destroyed by side reactions. Literature indicates that the (Fe(CN)6)-4 com~lex is produced slowly but it appears that complexes such as Fe(CN)4(H20)2-or Fe(CN)4(OH)2)-4, are formed quickly and should have no U.V. sensitifity, unlike (Fe(CN)6)-4. Stoichiometry of the testwork indicates that Fe«CN)4(OH)2)-4 complex may be the species formed. The usage of ferrous sulfate has the advantage of being able to bring ~ level down that divalent metal ions such as Cu++, Cd++, Hg++, Pb++ and Zn will form insoluble complexes and precipitate from solutions does not destroy weak acid dissolvable complexes and can leave a heavy metal problem behind after cyanide destruction.

The gold leaching using cyanide from ore or waste has been almost universally in use [1]. Recently, biological gold bioleaching using cyanide producing bacteria, e.g. Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, or P. aeruginosa, has been investigated as environmental friendly and cost effective method. Among them, C. violaceum has been reported as effective cyanide producing bacterium on gold leaching [2, 3]. C. violaceum produces cyanide using glycine as a direct precursor and subsequently detoxify the cyanide by ß-cyanoalanine synthase [4]. However, until today only 0.026 ? 16.9 mg/L of cyanide production in YP medium has been reported in the literatures by C. violaceum [4-6]. Comparing with adding cyanide chemical, biogenic cyanide concentration is lower than the cyanide concentration added in traditional cyanidation. Since cyanide also forms complexes with a number of other elements such as iron, nickel, zinc, silver, copper, and platinum, it is very important for gold recovery to investigate the enhancement of biological cyanide production and set optimal experimental condition. Most of early studies on gold bioleaching by C. violaceum have been performed to investigate gold leaching mechanism using gold powder, and recently various resources such as ores, electronic scrap, and printed circuit boards of waste electronics [7]. Few studies have dealt with gold bioleaching from low-grade ore. In this research the feasibility of gold bioleaching by C. violaceum from low-grade ores containing gold was evaluated and fundamental study was performed for further scale-up study. The aim of this study was to improve the potential of gold bioleaching by C. violaceum from gold-containing ore; in particular, enhancement of biological cyanide production.

The range of gold ores tested at AMMTEC LTD over several years has resulted in the requirement to analyse for the mode of occurrence of gold in order to assist selection of ore processing options. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages.

SALKOVITZ1 has given a number of useful angles between planes for use with the Laue method in determining the orientation of bismuth single crystals. Bismuth is usually considered as having a face-centered-rhombohedra1 structure with its axial angle 87°34', Fig. 1. A similar figure given by Sal-kovitz appears to be in error in that the angle there marked as 87°34' should be 92°26. The primitive cell is a single rhombohedron of axial angle 570 14. The structure is almost face-centered-cubic and hence high accuracy in measurements is essential if there is to be no confusion in indexing poles or zone axes. It is easier to get this accuracy if zone axes are plotted on the stereogram because they will lie near the basic circle where the net has a more open scale. The zone axes can be read from the film, using a Greninger chart, and can be plotted more accurately than poles. Also, the angles between points near the basic circle can be read more accurately than those between poles near the center. In spite of the wide use of lead compounds to enhance cyanidation of free milling sulphide-bearing gold ores, an industrial control method was only implemented four years ago. This study presents the results of the investigation that led to the development of the on-line control technology. Two free milling sulphide-bearing gold ores and high purity minerals were used to develop and test the concept. The first ore contains 2.8 g/t Au, 6.2% pyrrhotite, 2.1% pyrite 0.6 % arsenopyrite, 0.1% chalcopyrite and 0.1% organic carbon. The second ore contains 10.4 g/t Au, 3.2% pyrite, 0.8% pyrrhotite and 0.38% chalcopyrite. The first ore showed a much higher oxidation rate in the pre-leach than the second one and consumed seven times more cyanide. A relation between the formation of thiosulphate and thiocyanate and the additions of lead nitrate were quantified. The ?reducing power?, a titration with permanganate, predominantly determines the concentration of thiosulphate and thiocyanate in cyanide solution. The relation between the reducing power and the addition of lead nitrate at various concentrations of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in the ores was established, providing a monitor/control strategy for lead nitrate addition.

The twelve latexes listed in Table XI penetrated A horizon soil as shown by elution through a laboratory soil column and gave good sealing efficiency. See details in Table XII. High elution through laboratory soil columns of 4 to 6 inches depth is desirable because it predicts penetration of latex to a greater depth in the field. No definite correlation was evident between penetrating ability and particle size, surface tension, or pH. Most of the materials, however, were characterized by low surface tensions in the 36 to 53 dynes/cm range while particle sizes were usually in the intermediate range of about 1500 to 2500 Å. Naugatex J-3471 (a highly crosslinked styrene-butadiene copolymer) was the most promising of this group for stability, penetrating ability; and sealant efficiency. It also showed utility with [B] profile soil. Many of the other latexes tested in this investigation showed good sealing efficiency but were judged unsatisfactory because they gave low penetration or formed surface films with & horizon top soil. In general, latexes containing cationic surfactants were not satisfactory because they formed a heavy surface film. This is due to neutralization of the positive latex charge by the negatively charged soil particles.

The composition of ferrous calcium silicate slag is located on the tie line between FeOx and calcium silicates in ternary FeOx-SiO2-CaO system. This slag has never been used as copper smelting slag because of high sulfidic copper solubility. However, when the dissolved copper in slag is just oxidic, as in direct white metal production or in converting process, this slag is quite attractive and can be regarded as the third copper smelting slag after fayalite and calcium ferrite slags. Based on the authors' studies on phase separation thermodynamics and laboratory experiments, it was clarified that the oxidic copper loss in this ferrous calcium silicate slag become the minimum not only %Cu in slag but also the total copper loss when the amount of slag is taken into account. It has been proven that calcium ferrite slag is suitable for continuous converting where the dissolved copper is oxidic, but there exist some drawbacks such as limited solubility of silica, low lead removability and too high fluidity. To overcome these difficulties accompanying traditional slags, ferrous calcium silicate slag is the hopeful alternative. In view of the general trends of modem copper smelting processes, the interesting features of this new slag system are discussed.
