The topic area for this paper covers the United States portion of the northern Gulf of Mexico, extending from the Rio Grande delta east to the Florida peninsula. Declaration of an Exclusive Economic Zone in 1983 expanded Federal economic jurisdiction on the continental margins from 12 to 200 nautical miles seaward from the coast. The nation-wide area of the EEZ totals 3 million square nautical miles, with approximately 186 thousand square nautical miles in the Gulf of Mexico. In the Gulf, the continental shelf has an area of 81 thousand square nautical miles, extending to a depth of 600 ft. and having widths of 6 to 120 nautical miles. Specific areas on the shelf offer the greatest potential for containing aggregate and other hard mineral resources. The primary geomorphic features along the Gulf coast include: barrier islands, chenier plains, tidal inlets, bays and lagoons, estuaries, and deltaic headlands. These features are composed of terrigenous siliclastic sediments, except for the west Florida coast, south of 29°N latitude, which is dominated by carbonate sediments. On the shelf, the primary features are linear sand shoals and associated sand sheets, relict delta lobes and channels, and banks related to salt diapirs and coral reefs. The composition and distribution of sediments in these coastal and shelf features are determined by numerous geologic factors including: seabed topography; riverine sediment discharge; sediment dispersal patterns due to currents, waves, storms and tides; tectonics and subsidence; and repeated fluctuations in sea level.

A field project to develop and demonstrate a method for alleviating problems of highly-mineralized ground water where they occur as isolated zones or pockets in fresh-water aquifers is being conducted in the Ogallala Aquifer of eastern New Mexico by the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Center. Removal of contaminated water is by a large-capacity well and the pumped poor-quality water is used locally for secondary recovery of oil, Benefits of the operation are threefold in that the aquifer is being reclaimed for future fresh water production, contaminated water is being used beneficially, and fresh water which otherwise would have been used for waterflooding is available for other purposes. Ground-water quality in the site has improved markedly after 21 months of operation. Water quality in 15 specially-drilled monitoring wells has returned to the original quality level of the aquifer, and chloride concen¬trations in the pumping well have dropped to half the maximum level recorded thus far. Project results are very favorable and provide guidelines for initiation of similar undertakings in localities where needed.

"Minntac is a taconite mining, concentrating and pelletizing operation located near the town of Mountain Iron, Minnesota, U.S.A. It is totally owned and operated by USX Corporation and represents its largest source of domestic iron units. Minntac began producing fluxed pellets in 1988 and has produced both acid and fluxed pellets since then. This paper compares the acid and fluxed pellets produced at Minntac. It reviews modifications that have been made to the plant flowsheet and discusses areas recognized for improvement since the beginning of fluxed pellet production. It also comments briefly on the performance of Minntac fluxed pellets in USX blast furnaces and the future of fluxed pellets at Minntac.IntroductionMinntac was built in three steps with each step designed to produce 6 million long tons of acid pellets per year. The actual production has varied though. Figure I shows the production by year at Mirmtac. Step I began production in 1967, Step 2 in 1972 and Step 3 in 1978. Mirmtac produced 16.5 million tons in 1979 but only 3.5 million tons in 1982 when the facility was shut down for six months because of the lack of demand for pellets. Since the initial start up, Mirmtac has produced over 200 million long tons of pellets. Until 1987, all the pellets produced were ""acid"" pellets. In 1987, equipment to produce ""fluxed"" pellets was installed and tested. In 1988, full scale production of fluxed pellets began."

Viscous fingering was studied as it occurred in an open Hele-Shaw model (1 ft x 4 ft x 1/16 in.); it was also studied in the same model packed with 80-mesh glass beads during miscible displacements under unfavorable viscosity ratio conditions. It was determined that the lengths of 20 elements of the front were distributed normally around the average position of the combined elements under all conditions. Represented by the normal distribution, the length of the viscous fingers grew linearly with the distance traveled from the point of finger formation, increased with displacement velocity, and increased with increasing mobility ratio. Results obtained during the first few inches of displacement were of little or no use in predicting finger growth and/or finger length throughout the 4-ft model since the point of finger initiation cannot be predicted and would often occur several inches from the point of injection with either positive or apparent negative coordinates. The fingering occurring during a miscible slug displacement was much greater than would be predicted based upon the actual mobility ratios between in-place fluid and slug and between slug and following fluid, using the results described above for miscible displacement in the absence of a slug. Many of the experiments in the packed model showed that the rate of growth of the viscous fingers was diminishing toward the end of the displacement in the 4-ft long model, indicating that microscopic mixing, such as diffusion or dispersion, was decreasing the viscous fingering effect. INTRODUCTION Viscous fingering is a manifestation of a finger-shaped interface between displaced and displacing fluids occurring during typical miscible displacement projects for oil recovery. Its cause may be traced to the instability of a viscous fluid being displaced by a more mobile fluid. Viscous fingering takes on important significance in the miscible slug process 1.2 where it may be a dominant factor in determining minimum slug size. Experimental1-3 and theoretical4-7 studies of viscous fingering have been made by other investi- gators. However, an exhaustive study of the variables affecting viscous fingering had not been made. The present study was undertaken in an effort to determine the effects of some of the more obvious variables—such as mobility ratio, displacement velocity, distance displaced, and packing—upon viscous finger length and growth in a small laboratory model. It does not necessarily follow that conclusions reached by studying the results of this model study may be applied to the field. Future studies would have to evaluate the effect of model size on extension of these results. EQUIPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A flow diagram for the equipment used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. Basically, it consisted of (1) a constant-rate pump for the injection of displacing fluid into (2) a model made up of two flat transparent plates spaced a small distance apart and (3) provisions for the production of fluid into a calibrated graduate. The displacing fluid contained a dye which allowed visual observation of finger spacing and length. The pump performed at rates from 2.5 cc/hr to 480 cc/hr, while pumping a light mineral oil into a bladder in a closed glass container holding the displacing fluid. The model was made up of two plates of 1-in. Plexiglass with dimensions 1-ft wide by 4-ft long. These were spaced 1/16 in. apart so that the internal model dimensions were 1-ft wide x 4-ft long x 1/16

Bureau of Mines As an addition to the fine reviews on drilling presented in the foregoing papers, we feel it would be appropriate to mention briefly some work in this area by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The Bureau has had under way for several years at its Twin Cities Mining Research Center studies directed toward a better understanding of basic drilling mechanisms. The work includes drillability investigations with diamond rotary, and with percussive drilling systems, as well as fundamental studies of rock behavior under drill bit types of loading. Results of our work to date have contributed the following to the state of the art. MECHANISM OF ROCK FAILURE-Rock fragmentation through use of mechanical energy systems, including drilling systems, consists of two major components-machine and rock. The two components are related to each other by their functional behavior and their resultant motion which the components mutually influence. Forces in the systems are transmitted directly to the bit which in turn induces stresses in the rock. When the induced stresses exceed the strength of the rock, the rock fails resulting in penetration. Rock strength is a function of the forces applied to the rock. Stresses under a drill bit, regardless of bit configurations, are essentially compressive, resulting in a condition where the rock has the highest resistance to failure. The ratio of principal stresses induced under drill bits is an indication of the mode of failure in the rocks. Initially, compressive stresses under the drill bit cause rock to undergo inelastic deformation. The impression observed at the first stage of crater formation under the drill bit shows that rock is no longer elastic. Associated subsurface failure at this stage precedes total rupture which subsequently appears at the rock surface. Thus, explanation of crater formation, by applying theory of elasticity alone, is likely to be over-simplified. ENERGY VERSUS VOLUME OF ROCK REMOVED-Experimental results show that energy per unit volume of rock removed is constant for a particular rock and bit type. Rock offers a definite resistance to penetration, depending on the method of the energy application; this may be defined as the drilling strength of a rock. Energy consumption in a drilling system may be divided into two components: 1) Energy required to move the machine parts; and 2) energy consumption in breaking rock. Component 1 is dependent on the type of the machine. Component 2 is dependent on the strength properties of rock and the efficiency of the bit in rock cutting. The sum of the energy required in both components determines the total energy required in breaking rock. Our work in this area has included consideration of both diamond and percussive drilling systems. PENETRATION RATE-For a drilling rate expression to be useful in predicting field performance, it should include the operating characteristics of the drilling machine. Eq. 37, for example, is simply a statement of the fact that the drilling rate is determined by the power output of the machine (2pNT) and the power requirements to break the rock in the hole (AER). "OPENING REMARKS Yesterday and today we have heard some very interesting papers on operating matters and some of you are probably wondering what we are now doing talking about Communications in Plant Design. Let me tell you! Before the techniques we have heard being discussed can be used, there has to be a properly operating plant. It is certainly a fact that many mineral processing plants achieve only limited success and a number of them can even be said to be failures. Some of you sitting here are probably living with operating problems that are clue to errors in the design.If the histories of these problem plants are examined, it will be found that in many cases, the necessary skills were available during the period of the plant design. There was extensive operating know¬ledge together with a full range of project expertise. Why then the failures? In a substantial number of cases it can be traced to the old, old problem of communications. As plants get bigger, money costs more and smooth startups become more important, it becomes less and less economic to fix up any design errors during plant operations.During our careers in mineral processing, nearly all of us will be involved in at least one plant design and I feel that it is as well if we understand some of these communication difficulties that can lead to a problem plant. There is little point in us being experts in mineral processing if the knowledge we have acquired doesn't somehow get incorporated into the plant.I would, therefore, like to present this short paper that mentions a few of the significant communication problems that can occur during the design of mining and mineral processing plants, together with some thoughts on answers to these problems."

The Berlin gold-quartz mine is situated in Nye county, Nevada, on the west flank of the Shoshone range, about 40 miles south and 30 miles west from the town of Austin, the county-seat of Lander county. The distance from Austin is about 60 miles by stage-road. The outcrop of the vein, at the top of the incline-shaft, is situated just at the base of the mountain proper, almost exactly at the intersection of the mountain-side with the gravelly bench that slopes for about three-quarters of a mile to the flatter sage-brush plain, or desert valley, below. The vein itself consists almost entirely of quartz, with perhaps 2 per cent. of sulphide of iron, copper, lead, zinc and antimony, and perhaps a trace of some of the compounds of tellurium with gold and silver, although none of the latter have been as yet positively identified. The relative proportion, by weight, of silver and gold in the ores, varies in different parts of the vein, from 12 silver for 1 of gold, to 7 silver for 1 of gold. The quartz vein-filling is usually frozen fast to the walls, and is very hard and compact, seldom showing the friable, fissured, or shelly structure often to be found in quartz-veins. Comparatively little evidence of relative motion of one wall of the vein upon the other is to be found—a fact indicating that during the formation of the vein, and prior to the extensive movements herein described, little disturbance had taken place. No evidence whatever of metasomatic origin has been observed. On the other hand, occasional occurrences of comby structure, in which the axes of the quartz-crystals are at right angles to the plane of the vein, rather indicate deposition from solution in a pre-existing fissure. In magnetic taconite of the East Mesabi range, quartz, magnetite, and cummingtonite (OH}(Fe, Mg)(Si4O11)2) are the three major ore-forming minerals.' Fine grinding and magnetic separation of the taconite leads to a concentrate analyzing 64 to 65 pct Fe and 8 to 9 pct insoluble; the gangue content of the concentrate arising from the presence of locked magnetite-gangue particles, and of occluded gangue particles in magnetic floccules. To further upgrade such taconite concentrates, flotation appears to offer a particularly promising approach. To evaluate its effectiveness in separation, a knowledge of the flotation characteristics of each mineral comprising the concentrate becomes desirable. The floatability of magnetite and of quartz have already been reported in a previous paper,2 in which the flotation characteristics of the two minerals were correlated with the electrokinetic properties at the mineral-solution interfaces. Since cummingtonite has somewhat intermediate chemical composition between the above-named oxides, the electrokinetic and the flotation behavior of this mineral becomes of interest for both practical and fundamental reasons. In the present article the results of electrophoretic mobility measurements and of Hallimond tube flotation tests on cummingtonite are reported and are compared with those of quartz and magnetite. MATERIALS AND METHODS A sample of cummingtonite-rich taconite, received from the Mitchell pit, near Babbitt, Minn., was crushed and ground through 100 mesh, and the product was fractionated magnetically into three portions. First, a drum-type laboratory cobber was used to separate a highly magnetic portion, consisting mainly of free, but also containing locked, magnetite particles. The cobber tailing was then passed in two stages through a Franz isodynamic separator. The middle fraction was isolated, and, upon examination petrographically, was ascertained to be principally cummingtonite. The 100 to 150 mesh fraction of this sample was selected for the present study. It was cleaned by leaching briefly with hot, dilute HC1 and then by rinsing repeatedly with demineralized water. A ground and elutriated fraction of -5p cummingtonite was used for the electrophoretic measurements.

Comminution devices such as rod or ball mills are characteristically nonselective in their operation in that all material fed to a mill is ground to some extent. This is unfortunate when the object of comminution is liberation, for not only is energy expended in breaking pure gangue particles wasted, but, since gangue is frequently the predominant phase, the opportunity for such loss is great. Ideally, in this application a comminuting device should develop fracture only in locked particles. In the present investigation an attempt was made to use the large density difference which may exist between minerals to prevent comminution of one while grinding the other. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT The two minerals used in this work were -8-mesh galena and -8+ 20-mesh quartz. All tests were made on 2000-g charges containing 50 pct by weight of each mineral. Heavy media suspensions consisted of -100-mesh ferrosilicon in water. For grinding, a laboratory mill 10 in. diam by 12 in. long was filled to about 30 pct of its volume with either a ball or a rod charge. The balls ranged in size from 3/8 to 1 1/8 in. in diam; the rods ranged from 5/8 to 1 1/4 in. diam by 11 in. long. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In all tests employing heavy media, the ground pulps were treated as follows: 1) After recovering the ground charge from the mill but before drying, the pulp was wet screened on 200 mesh. 2) After drying the + 200-mesh product from step 1, the ferrosilicon was removed magnetically. 3) The nonmagnetic quartz and galena product from step 2 was sized on 10-mesh through 200-mesh screens. 4) The mineralogical composition of each screen fraction was determined by measuring its specific gravity. The interest which has been aroused in prospecting for oil in the foothills of southern Alberta, and in the oil possibilities of the known gas fields situated in the less-disturbed areas, called for a much closer examination of the structure, thickness, and composition of the underlying rocks of the region than had hitherto been made. The areal geology of the larger part of the great plains was outlined by Dawson, McConnell, and Tyrrell, between 1881 and 1885. The foothill area was not critically examined at that time, owing to the time which would have been required for its proper study and the difficulty that was found in recognizing in the foothills the divisions which had been adopted in the mapping of the formations of the plains. This was due in great measure to the paucity of exposures in continuous sections of the lower divisions of the Upper Cretaceous. Since the pioneer work on the plains was published, the beds which form continuations south into Montana have been critically examined, The Canadian beds arch over the end of a flat anticline which rises to the south; and two sections in Montana, one on each side of the anticline, help to explain some of the difficulties previously encountered in the mapping of the measures found in the foothills. The index map, Fig. 1, shows the area studied, and its relation to southeastern Alberta, and to Montana. Problems of Correlation The principal difficulty experienced in correlation was in connection with the measures known as the Montana group. The beds of this group did not seem to agree in the two Montana sections. They showed the same differences to some extent as are encountered in comparing the foothill measures with those of the plains. The Montana group in Dakota and Manitoba consists of a series of shales of marine origin. In the eastern Montana section two sandstone members appear, leaving a shale member at the top and another

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day by October 1, 1964 (Figure 1). Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1,400 tons per day and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1,100 tons per day due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January, 1968, was mainly massive sulphides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, copper, zinc and minor amounts of lead sulphides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (aver- age specific gravity 3.8). From January, 1968, until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulphide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The limited size of the orebody and the mining method employed (open stoping by blasthole and slash and bench methods) would have made grade control from the mine difficult and expensive. It was decided to try to cope with grade variations in the mill. The resulting rapid and wide swings in mill heads, hardness and specific gravity have presented many and varied challenges for the mill personnel.

Geochemical and mineralogical datasets from Tropicana Gold Mine, Australia, have been used to define ore fingerprints. VNIR/SWIR spectral data were represented by four normalised wavelength regions and were clustered to form spectral classes. Sequentially, these spectral class proportions within a block and collocated XRF data were clustered to form material types (fingerprints). The material types were related to an Equotip-BWi correlation. These correlations can be used to extrapolate a hardness signature and generate a BWi proxy for different blocks. The combined fingerprints and BWi proxy can assist as a tool for enhancing the prediction of comminution behaviour. They can explain specific domain-related hardness variations. For example, one material type could be separated into a softer (~15-18 kWh/t), and harder (>20 kWh/t) material blend. This was accomplished using the commonly overlooked VNIR region at 605 nm. This outcome has significance for blending strategies.

"We have developed new recycling technologies, based upon an eco-friendly biotechnology, in order to extract precious and rare metals sourced from post-consumer products. Recently we have been focusing on the metal ion-reducing bacteria, Shewanella algae and Shewanella oneidensis, which are able to reduce and deposit the precious metal ions (gold (III), platinum (IV), palladium (II), and rhodium (Ill)) into metal nanoparticles at room temperature within 120 min. When targeting the leachates from printed circuit boards, the Shewanella bacteria were able to allow selective reduction and deposition of gold (III) ions under acidic conditions in the presence of heavy metal ions, proposing a new bio-recovery system for gold. We also found that the Shewanella bacteria can separate and concentrate soluble rare metal ions (dysprosium (III), indium (Ill), and gallium (Ill)) from dilute solutions. Using this biomass adsorbent, the effectiveness of system for the novel recovery of indium from the leachate of used LCD (liquid crystal display) panels has been demonstrated.IntroductionMany high-tech manufacturing industries are highly dependent upon the use of critical raw materials that are the rare metals (e.g. rare earth elements/indium) and precious metals (e.g. gold/platinum group metals). There are now serious global concerns over the short term and long term availability of critical raw materials for high-tech manufacturing. This highlights the paramount importance of sustainable component reuse and material recycling technologies for recovery of critical raw materials. We believe that the most important domestic source of precious metals is through more recycling, and this will require more research and further development for the recycling of precious and rare metals. In general, chemical/thermal recycling is deemed to be the most appropriate means to extract the precious and rare metals from postconsumer products. However, there are issues related to the heavy use of toxic and hazardous chemicals, and the release of toxic emissions.Biological recovery methods provide an attractive alternative strategy and use microorganisms to separate and concentrate soluble precious and rare metals from dilute solutions into microbial cells via biosorption [1-3] and biomineralization [ 4, 5]. Biological systems generally operate at ambient temperature and near-neutral pH. Consequently, microbial recovery of metals would be an environmentally friendly method for recycling precious and rare metals from end-of-use products."

Drilled pier foundations have long been a favored foundation type for heavily loaded structures. Drilled piers derive their load-bearing capacity from end-bearing, and/or sidewall friction. This type of foundation is used in many geologic settings, including those areas underlain by hard carbonate rock, such as limestones and dolomites. When properly designed and constructed, drilled piers provide high load-carrying capacity in both compression and uplift. However, carbonate rock is often subject to intense differential weathering resulting in the formation of an irregular bedrock surface, sinkholes and caves; consequently, the investigation for, and the design of, drilled pier foundations is often complex. Further, the construction may be difficult and costly. This paper discusses geotechnical investigative procedures which can be employed to develop foundation design criteria and reduce the frequency of changed conditions. Finally, state-of-the-art construction practices and quality control techniques are discussed.

"The presence of calcium and magnesium in the hydrometallurgical processing of base metals, results in a number of process difficulties. These problems range from the contamination of the final product (where the final product is a precipitate) to high energy consumptions and large bleed streams during electrowinning. Calcium poses an additional problem in sulphate solutions owing to the low solubility of its sulphate salts. This can easily lead to a process stream that is supersaturated with calcium sulphate, resulting in unwanted solids formation within the process equipment.A review of literature has proven that there is no conventional method for the control of calcium and or magnesium, although a number of potential processes have been identified. The technologies investigated included precipitation, ion exchange and solvent extraction, for which at least one method was found under each. To make the reader aware of these processes a short description was provided of each within the text.Of these processes, fluoride precipitation was selected for experimental investigation based on the low solubility of calcium and magnesium compared to the base metals. This process involves the addition of a soluble fluoride to precipitate CaF2 and MgF2. The experiments were designed to investigate the equilibrium of the system at varying parameters of which the level of fluoride addition, the ratio of calcium to magnesium, and the identity of the soluble fluoride was reported. In all of the instances the process showed high selectivity towards calcium and magnesium over the base metals. The experiments proofed the process to have a higher affinity towards the removal of magnesium at compositions where the molar ratio of calcium to magnesium was higher than 1:3. It is often the case that the calcium to magnesium ratio is in the region of 1: 10. From this it follows that the fluoride addition has to be stoichiometric or greater for calcium and magnesium combined, if the calcium is to be precipitated. This was demonstrated as well. On the identity of the soluble fluoride hydrogen fluoride was compared to ammonium fluoride, of which the latter was found to be preferred."

Horizontal rotating mills are being used all over the world in different mineral and power generation industries. David Brown South Africa, with over 140 years of experience in gear manufacture and design, has been supplying these industries with innovative designs at exceptional quality. The gearing systems associated with these industries are challenged daily with operating conditions that are not always fully understood. Failures are therefore experienced, over time in the industry, which cannot always be fully explained. David Brown South Africa has developed a gear monitoring system, the Intelligent Gearing System, in association with Transmission Dynamics (UK), in order to monitor and analyse these operating conditions in real time. The system has been designed on the principles of Six Sigma, incorporating Design for Six Sigma. The purpose with this system design is to monitor the operating conditions on the pinion, record the information and analyse the data in relation to the rate of fatigue damage to the girth gear and pinion. This is done in real time and unattended. The output from the Intelligent Gearing System can be fed back into the operating system of the mill user, in order to display an alarm for operating conditions exceeding the design criteria as well as information on the rate of fatigue damage due to these operating conditions. When the mill operating and the effect on the fatigue life of the mill gearing components, conditions are better understood, mill users can forecast critical spare holding levels with an increased accuracy. The Intelligent Gearing System also allows early actions to remove reasons for system overloads.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of HCI concentration and solution temperature on the solubility and crystal form of the chlorides of Co, Mn, and Ni when sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increasing HCI concentration in solution caused the chlo-rides of Co, Mn, and Ni to crystallize (salt out) because of the common ion effect. The salting-out crystallization was most effective for NiCI2, which had a solubility of 0.7 pct at 20° C and maximum HCI concentration. COCl2 salted out to a minimum solubility of 9.4 pct at 20° C and 22 pct HCI concentration and increased in solubility at greater HCI concentrations because of the formation of chloride complexes. MnCl2 was intermediate in behavior. The effect of temperature on solubility was greatest for CoCl2 and least for NiCI2, 15 and 7 pct change, respectively, over the temperature range of 20° to 60° C. The salted-out chlorides of cobalt and nickel formed the hexahydrates and those of manganese formed the tetrahydrate in saturated metal chlo-ride solutions at 20° C and low concentrations of HCI. Increasing the temperature or the HCI concentration caused a 108s in waters of hydra-tion. At 60° C, the salted-out crystals of NiCl2 formed the tetrahydrate in HCI concentrations up to 18 pct and the dihydrate at higher concentrations, while cobalt and manganese chlorides formed the dihydrates, even in water.

Presented in this paper is a summary of the results of experiments conducted in both the laboratory and the field during the past three years in connection with casing-perfora. tion problems. Included are studies of gun features that influence bullet performance and penetration, and studies of the effect of perforator bullets on casing and the neat cement in the annulus. Discussion and data are also presented relative to the accuracy of depth measurements in deep wells. Introduction It is a common practice in the oil industry to effect the completion of oil wells by setting and cementing casing through the producing horizons and perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval by means of a gun lowered into the well on a cable or on the tubing. This practice has been followed for some time, and this method of completion has been given considerable study by the companies that render perforating service as well as by the oil companies that utilize their services. Through continued research on this subject, it has been possible to develop guns, bullets, and powder that will permit controlled firing at great depths, and penetration of as many as two strings of casing. It is the object of this paper to present the results of studies made of gun perforating in both the field and the laboratory. These studies were made to determine the factors that affect penetration of the bullet, burring of the casing, accuracy of depth measurements, and other items. It is hoped that by presenting the results of these investigations a better understanding may be obtained of certain of the factors involved in gun perforating and further investigation of the subject will be prompted. Subsurface Tests A well approximately 9000 ft deep, which was being prepared for abandonment, was selected for subsurface tests of gun-perforating experiments, In preparing the well for the experiment, 51/2-in. casing in the hole was pulled and racked in the derrick. A test section of pipe, which consisted of 65 ft of 5-in. 18-lb J-55 casing centered inside 7-in. 28-lb N-80 casing, was placed in the derrick corner and the annulus between the two pipes was cemented from the bottom up with 161/2 lb per gal neat cement, which was mixed and displaced with a cementing truck in the usual manner. After the cement had been allowed to harden for about a week, the test section was lowered into the hole on the 51/2-in. casing to a depth of 6600 ft by casing measurements. The hole was filled with drilling fluid weighing 10 lb per gallon. A perforating company was called to perforate the pipe, but was not advised that an experiment was being conducted. The company was asked to check the total depth (to cross pins in the bottom of the test section), then to raise the gun a given distance and fire a given number of shots with 1/2-in. bullets, pick up another distance and fire a given number of 3/8-in
