"Current empirical Semi Autogneous Grinding (SAG) mill models contain assumptions concerning the amount of energy available for particle breakage, how this energy is distributed in the mill media and the rate at which the energy is transferred. Despite these assumptions the JK SAG model is highly functional with a proven track record. DEM provides a numerical framework to greatly improve on these assumptions that were necessary due to a lack of available input data.This paper identifies key outputs of the Discrete Element Method (DEM), such as energy spectra and impact probability distribution. It describes how they can be incorporated into current mill models utilising practical rock breakage data. The rate at which energy is transferred is shown to be dependent on particle position and mill rotational speed and not once per cycle as previously assumed. Based upon this an improved energy transfer methodology is presented. The fundamental outputs of the DEM are validated against experimental three-dimensional particle tracking data, so as to establish whether the DEM produces correct energy transfer predictions on the inter-particle level, which is crucial to this work. • Effective Experimental ValidationAn automated 3D tracking technique is employed to study the motion of plastic particles deep within the charge of a 142mm diameter experimental mill. A Biplanar Angioscope is used to film the mill with X-rays in two planes simultaneously at 50 frames/s, with a shutter speed of 1/3000s. A marked ball within the charge is tracked for over 2 minutes and the resulting digital images processed by a fully automated imaging technique, which locates the 3D coordinates of the particles to within 0.2mm. With over 250 circulations, this provides statistically rigorous and accurate data for verification in the numerical modelling of mills.A series of validation techniques have been developed to compare the experimental trajectory data with the outputs of both 2D and 3D DEM simulations. The techniques describe the shape of the charge and the particle motion within mill, allowing objective comparisons to be made of key features of the charge, such as the equilibrium surface and the centre-of-circulation."

The U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) is currently conducting a national program to survey for uranium the conterminous United States and Alaska by 1980 using airborne and surface techniques. This paper discusses the techniques used and some of the results of airborne surveys conducted to date by Geodata International, Inc. Airborne gamma radiation and the earth's magnetic field data are measured to provide data leading to regions potentially more favorable for the exploration and discovery of uranium ore. High-sensitivity radiometric and magnetic field data have been gathered from an aircraft with an average surface altitude of 400 feet (Figure 1). Under most conditions, data are usable up to an aircraft surface elevation of about 1250 feet where limitations will be discussed. Results of data analysis under GJO-1632, GJ0-1644, GJO-1654 and GJO-1663 will be discussed.

"The solid .state electrotransport (SSE) is one of the most promising methods for the elimination of gaseous impurities from chemically active metals, such as rare earth metals. . In the present work, the SSE process was applied for the oxygen removal from praseodymium. The SSE factors, such as effective valence, were measured under the various temperatures, electric field intensities and initial oxygen contents, and the effects of those conditions on the SSE process were discussed. Furthermore, the solubility of oxygen in .solid praseodyillium was also measured·, by using the SSE method and metal-oxide equilibrium method.IntroductionWhen a direct current is passed through a solid alloy, not only electrons but also solute atoms are transported as charge carriers toward the anode or cathode. This phenomenon is referred to as an electrotransport or electromigration. The solid state electrotransport (SSE) is the application technique, based on this principle, to the pUrification of the solid metallic materials.Rare earth metals are used for various functional materials, such as magnetic, optical or electronic materials, therefore their high purity metals are required [l ,2]. However, rare earth metals are chemically active and have a strong affinity with gaseous elements (e.g. oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon). In many cases, eliminating operations of gaseous elements have not been always made commercially, because these impurity elements could not be eliminated by usual treatments applied to the purification of ·common metals. As an alternative method, authors have proposed the· application of the SSE process to the elimination of gaseous impurities from rare earth metals. Investigations have been carried out on the yttrium-oxygen and neodymium-oxygen systems and the results were already reported[3,4]."

The Pima mine lies 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., and 45 miles north of the Mexican border. It is located on a hillside overlooking Tucson, which allows for gravity flow generally through the plant. In April 1965, an expansion was authorized by the mine's board of directors. This will triple the mine's output to 18,000 tpd. At this rate, it is estimated that there is sufficient ore to last 20 years.

Meteor Crater, Arizona, is a natural wonder which for years has been the subject of considerable discussion and study as to its origin and age (Fig. 1). Of the various theories advanced regarding the origin, two have been considered as most probable by a majority of investigators. The first theory is that the crater was formed by a meteorite or a swarm of meteoric material striking the earth at a high velocity and burying itself. The second theory is that the crater was formed by a "steam explosion" from hot solutions or gases coming from underneath the present sedimentary beds which overlie the area. In order to obtain more detailed information regarding the conditions existing at the crater, the present management decided to have a detailed geophysical examination made. The origin of the crater is of considerable scientific importance and interest. More or less active mining operations have been carried out during the past 20 years by various groups who believed that the crater was of meteoric origin, and who hoped that sufficient quantities of such material had been buried to be commercially valuable. Fragments of meteoric material found on the surface of the ground in the debris around the rim gave analysis of approximately 92 per cent iron and 8 per cent nickel, with some platinum and iridium. The material having a gross value of approximately $50 per ton, mining would be commercially profitable if sufficient quantities of the material existed in condition for mining. In the early work numerous drill holes and shallow shafts were put down, mainly in the northern portion of the crater. Pulverized material and debris caused considerable difficulty, and in an effort to overcome this the present management started a 1500-ft., two-compartment shaft on the south rim of the crater and outside of the fill zone. The intention was to sink the shaft in the solid rock outside of the crater, and then to crosscut toward the crater at a depth of 1500 ft. The work was finally stopped when a depth of 650 ft. was reached, because water poured into the shaft through large cracks and fissures in the rock. THE occurrence of the (100) [lOO] or "cube" texture upon annealing of cold-rolled copper has been much investigated.' The conditions favorable for its formation were found to be a high final annealing temperaturez or long annealing time," a high reduction of area in cold rolling prior to the final anneal,' and a small penultimate grain size." The effects of penultimate grain size and of rolling reduction were found by Cook and Richards4 to be interrelated in such a way that any combination of them giving lower than a certain value of the final average thickness of the grains in the rolled material leads to a fairly complete cube texture with a given final annealing time and temperature. Also, according to the same authors, at a higher final annealing temperature a larger average rolled grain thickness, i.e., a lower final rolling reduction, is sufficient than at a lower temperature. These somewhat involved conditions can be understood readily on the basis of recent results obtained at this laboratory. Hsun Hu was able to show recently by means of quantitative pole figure determinations that the rolling texture of tough pitch copper, which is almost identical with that of 2s aluminum: may be described roughly as a scatter around four symmetrical "ideal" orientations not very far from (123) [112]. In the case of aluminum, annealing leads to retain-ment of the rolling texture with some decrease of the scatter around the four "ideal" orientations, and to the appearance of a new texture component, namely the cube texture." A microscopic technique, revealing grain orientations by means of oxide film and polarized light, showed that the retainment of the rolling texture is achieved through two different mechanisms operating simultaneously, namely "re-crystallization in situ," and the formation of strain-free grains in orientations different from their local surroundings, but identical with that of another component of the rolling texture. Thus, a local area in the rolled material, having approximately the orientation of one of the four "ideal" components of the texture, partly retains its orientation during annealing, while recovering from its cold-worked condition, and it is partially absorbed at the same time by invading strain-free grains of an orientation approximately corresponding to that of another "ideal" texture component. The reorientation here, as well as in the formation of the strain-free grains of "cube" orientation, may be described as a [Ill] rotation of about 40°, see Fig. 1 of ref. 6. The preferential growth of grains in such orientations is a result of the high mobility of grain boundaries corresponding to this relative orientation.' " It appears very likely that in copper the mechanism of the structural changes during annealing is similar to that observed in aluminum (except for the much greater frequency of formation of annealing twins in copper). In both metals the new grains of cube orientation have a great advantage over the new grains with orientations close to one of the four components of the rolling texture. This advantage stems from their symmetrical orientation with respect to all four retained rolling texture components of the matrix; they are oriented favorably for growth at the expense of all of these four orientations. As a result, the growth of the "cube grains" is favored over the growth of the others, as soon as the new grains have grown large enough to be in contact with portions of the matrix containing elements of more than one, and preferably of all four component textures. It is clear that this critical size is smaller and, therefore, attained earlier in the annealing process if the structural units, such as grains and kink bands, representing the four matrix orientations are smaller, i. e., if the average thickness of the rolled grains is smaller. Hence, for a given annealing time and temperature, a smaller penultimate grain size and a higher rolling reduction both tend to increase that fraction of the annealing period during which the above condition is satisfied. Consequently, the percentage volume of material assuming the cube orientation increases. The same is true also for increasing time and temperature of annealing when the penultimate grain size and the final rolling reduction are constant, since the average size attained by the new grains during annealing increases with the annealing time and temperature. For the same reason, at higher annealing temperatures a given volume percentage of cube texture can be obtained with larger rolled grain thickness (larger penultimate grain size, or smaller rolling reduction) than at lower annealing temperatures. The well-known conspicuous sharpness of the cube texture may be interpreted as a result of the fact that selective growth of only those grains is favored that have an orientation closely symmetrical with respect to all four components of the deformation texture and exhibit, therefore, a high boundary mobility in contact with each. The effect of alloying elements in suppressing the cube texture, as described by Dahl and Pawlek,' appears to be associated with a change in the rolling texture. For face-centered cubic metals, such as copper, which do exhibit the cube texture upon annealing, the rolling texture is always of the type described above, i. e., scattered around four "ideal orientations" of approximately (123) [112]. The addition of certain alloying elements, such as about 5 pct Zn or 0.05 pct P in copper, has the as yet unexplained effect of changing the rolling texture into the (110) 11121 type. This texture consists of two fairly sharply developed, twin related components. In such cases, as in 70-30 brass and in silver, the annealing texture again is related to the rolling texture by a [lll] rotation of about 30°, however, because of the different rolling texture to start from, it has no cube texture component. At higher temperatures, both in brassm and in silver," grain growth leads to a further change in texture: A [lll] rotation of the same amount, but in reversed direction, back to the original rolling texture.

The Miraí plant from Votorantim Metais, has two screening stages to the bauxite classification after scrubbagem. The final product has hold the larger size of 0,84 millimeters (20 mesh). There are two sieves Haver & Boecker (model R-TE 3658 x 10972), which have four modules with cut size sieves of 10 mesh (1.70 millimeters) and ¼ inch (6.35 millimeters) on the primary screen, and 20 mesh (0.84 mm) on the secondary screen, all made of polyurethane. The actual configuration was established according to the empirical tests realized that aimed the increase material load on the secondary screening. However, having in mind the screening process improvement and use the fractions smaller than 0,84 mm, which have significant levels of Alumina and low reactive silica, was proposed a new test of change the sieves opening for 6 mesh in the primary screen and 28 mesh for the secondary sieve. The objective of this work was measure the ore alterations on the particle size distribution on the screening steps, increasing the plant weight and ratio recovery before and after the test.

It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to compare the selectivities of diverse flotation reagents and also of flotation and float-sink methods of separation. Flotation tests, using sodium chloride, an alcohol-type frothing agent, and a kerosine-pine oil mixture as reagents, were made on seven coking-coal samples representing four different beds. The results indicated equivalent selectivities relative to sulfur rejection when entrapment effects were minimized by recleaning the various products. Selectivities relative to ash rejection were also equivalent for some coals; for others, the selectivities of the reagents tended to increase in the order sodium chloride, alcohol-type frother, and kerosine-pine oil. Float-sink tests on these same coals generally gave results indicating better selectivities than those obtained in flotation tests at comparable levels of recovery.

La influencia de los estudios de adsorción para el beneficio de los minerales, se relaciona con la flotabilidad de las especies minerales, y la perspectiva que se ofrece para el progreso de la metalurgia de concentración. Por ello, el objeto de la investigación se basa en la realización de tales experimentos como búsqueda del dominio de la clase de fenómenos fisico-químicos. Dentro de los métodos usuales de determinación de xantatos por yodo, se buscó hallar la concentración por medio del descenso de la adsorción, para determinar la máxima cantidad de reactivo y encontrar el más adecuado para el mineral. Empero, se reparó que a mayor concentración de colector, se genera mayor adsorción. Asímismo cuando se añade el xantato sobre el mineral con poca agua, la cantidad de reactivo adsorbida es superior, justificándose la ventaja que en procesos industriales significaría acondicionar después del espesamiento. En cuanto a la adsorción de galena oxidada, se observa que mezclando este mineral con un sulfuro de zinc, disminuye la adsorción. Posteriormente se ve cómo la superficie oxidada de la galena, puede alterarse por medio de reactivos, variando el grado de adsorción para los diferentes reactivos colectores de flotación. Finalmente se infiere que la realización de las pruebas pretenden determinar principalmente cuál es el reactivo más adecuado más adecuado para una galena determinada.

A review and synthesis of literature pertaining to biological consequences of submarine mine-tailings disposal (STD) was conducted. STD can result in massive sea floor sediment deposition. STD may also increase suspended sediment, trace metals, and residual milling reagents in receiving waters. These perturbations, which are highly site dependent, invariably smother benthic organisms, and could potentially affect or alter fish, plankton, and benthos through acute and chronic toxicity, bioaccumulation, behavioral changes, smothering, derived secondary effects, and habitat alteration. Much of the available information concerning STD is unpublished and limited to a restricted number of sites. From this information and related research, it appears that benthic smothering is the only major consequence of a properly designed STD system. There have been cases of metal bioaccumulation due to inadequate preliminary evaluation, Also, shallow water habitat alteration has resulted from STD. Reductions in biological production are likely due to benthic smothering. The rate of ecological recovery after termination of an STD operation varies and is difficult to assess, The consequences of STD are site specific. Additional research is needed concerning possible consequences of milling reagents and the broad implications of benthic smothering. Also, methodologies are needed to allow better prediction of benthic recolonization and ecological implications of metal bioaccumulation.

Strain burst can occur in underground hard rock excavation when the in-situ stresses are high enough. The prerequisite for rock burst is that the total energy released from the rock mass is higher than the energy needed for rock fracture. The total released energy is contributed by both the burst rock and the surrounding rock. The part of the energy from the burst rock is constant per unit volume of the rock, but the part from the surrounding rock is associated with the burst volume. A greater amount of energy will be released from the surrounding rock in the case of a larger volume of burst rock. The postulation for the energy conversion in strain burst is verified through a FLAC3D model in the paper. It is assumed that the strain burst occurs in a circular tunnel that is located in the hydrostatically loaded rock mass in the model. Six pairs of notches with different depths are created in the opposite walls of the tunnel to simulate the bursts. The energies released from the notch rocks and from the surrounding rock are calculated during the burst. The simulation results show that the percentage of the energy released from the surrounding rock in the total released energy increases with the notch depth. The numerical modelling confirms the postulation that the surrounding rock contributes more energy than the burst rock itself in large-scale strain bursts

Tripoli is a naturally occurring, very finely divided form of silica found chiefly in some midwestern and southeastern states and used commercially as fillers and abrasives. Definitions Tripoli is a microcrystalline, finely particulate, more or less friable form of silica that appears to be the product of leaching of siliceous limestone or calcareous chert. The term was originally applied to a deposit near Seneca, MO, that resembled material of that name found near Tripoli In North Africa (Hovey, 1894). The two deposits were subsequently found to have different physical characteristics -the North African tripoli, now called tripolite, is a diatomite, composed of the siliceous skeletons of microscopic marine plants called diatoms; the Missouri tripoli contains no diatom remains. The term tripoli, however, continued to be used for the Missouri material and is now applied in a general way to most silica deposits similar to it in characteristics and geologic origin. In commercial trade tripoli is commonly understood to designate material from the Missouri-Oklahoma field; silica from southern Illinois, the other major producing area, is referred to commercially as amorphous silica. Each term, however, may be used commercially for material, regardless of place of origin, that has the characteristics or uses commonly ascribed to the material from one or the other major producing area. For example, in the commodity price listings, Engineering & Mining Journal routinely lists under Tripoli, prices "f.o.b. Elco, IL" and "f.o.b. Seneca, MO, and Rogers, AR," and under Silica, amorphous, prices "f.o.b. IL," and "f.o.b. bierks, AR." Amorphous silica, the commercial designation given to southern Illinois tripoli, is, like the term tripoli, a misnomer. Mineralogically, the southern Illinois deposits are composed of microcrystalline quartz, and no amorphous material has been detected during X-ray and scanning electron microscope investigations (Leamnson, Thomas, and Ehrlinger, 1969; Thomas et al., 1970; Keller, 1978). Soft silica is another term that has been applied to Illinois and Tennessee tripoli, presumably to distinguish it from the more compact Missouri material. It has also been used in the ceramic trade to distinguish tripoli from "hard" silica, or silica flour, produced by pulverizing silica sand (Heinz, 1937). Rottenstone, produced commercially in Pennsylvania, is similar to tripoli in that a major constituent is finely particulate silica, and its uses are much the same as those of Tripoli-as abrasives and fillers. The origin of rottenstone also is similar to that of tripoli-decomposition of a siliceous sedimentary rock. The parent rock is defined as a siliceous limestone (Gary, McAfee,, and Wolf, 1972; Thrush, 1968) or as shale. Heinz (1937) quotes a brief statement describing the Pennsylvania deposits -"a black impure shaly limestone grading into black shale"-but does not identify the source of the statement. For convenience, rottenstone is included with tripoli in the reporting of production statistics in US Bureau of Mines (USBM) Minerals Yearbooks. Other materials that have been called tripoli include siliceous deposits in San Bernardino County, California (USBM Minerals Yearbooks, 1934-1941) and in Nevada (Chandler, 1960). These, however, differ in composition and/or origin from tripoli and, therefore, should not be identified by the name tripoli.

Due to the present economic climate, particularly the depressed copper market, conventional mining, milling and flotation operations have been suspended. However, due to the apparent amenability of the ore to 'natural' leaching, investigations have been initiated into establishing an in-situ leaching operation as a preferred alternative to conventional operations. Cement copper production has been developed in parallel with the leaching trials and is presently at the rate of approximately 3,000 tonnes of contained copper per annum. Testwork includes controlled leaching of ore both in the laboratory and in-situ following blasting.
