The design, construction and monitoring of the deep excavation support for the basement of a large-scale commercial development in Cavan, Ireland is presented. Excavation area was adjacent to existing structures and retained height H varied between 4.0m ? 11.0m. In areas where excavation depth H < 5.0m, wall was designed as cantilevered section. However in sections where 5.0m = H = 11m, additional wall supports were required for serviceability reasons. Traditionally, designers often provide additional wall support through the use of tie-back ground anchors, raking props and braces. On the current project, the main contractor was not in support of the use of temporary props so as to maximise working space, while owners of adjacent properties disapproved the use of tie-backs. The limited set-back between the wall line and site boundary also contributed to the complexity of the project. A rare alternative solution has been adopted. This novel approach involved buttressing the wall with steeply raking bored tension piles at regular intervals along the wall. Comparison of the monitored deflections in the cantilevered sections with those recorded at sections where tension piles were used shows the novel solution to be safe and quite effective. This approach is also considered to be more economical when compared with ground anchorage and propping.

Lignite constitutes approximately 97 percent of the near-surface coal resources in Texas. The most significant bituminous resources are in the north-central and southern parts of the state. Coal reserves in Texas are estimated to be 13.7 billion tons, about three percent of U.S. coal reserves. The average thickness of coal seams mined in Texas is approximately eight feet. Texas gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved February 16, 1980; the program was fully approved June 18,1980. The state&apos;s Abandoned Mine Lands program was approved June 23,1980.

Vermiculite is currently mined from shallow (less than 25 m or 80 ft) surface deposits throughout the world. The largest producers are Palabora Mining of Phalabowra, South Africa (ore stock is a phlogopitemica), Xinjiang Yuli Xinlong Vermiculite of Korla, China, and W.R. Grace of Enoree, SC (ore stock is a biotite mica). Smaller operations are in Australia, Brazil, Russia and Zimbabwe. They also produce vermiculite on a continuous basis but do not export any significant amounts of product to North America. Intermittent and poorly documented production on a minor scale is reported from Argentina, Egypt, India and Uganda. Worldwide vermiculite production in 2004 increased1.7 percent to 432.8 kt (477,000 st). North American production declined, while African and Chinese production continued to increase.

The WMC Olympic Dam Operation in South Australia is an integrated site, involving brown fields exploration through to production of copper cathode, uranium oxide, gold and silver bullion. The Geology and Analytical Services (GAS) Department reflects this totality and, therefore, is perhaps a unique construct in the industry. It comprises Geology, the Metallurgical Laboratory and the Analytical Laboratory, offering a single point of contact in matters of metal discovery and tracking through mine design, production, beneficiation and final product certification. This structure promotes value adding by removing traditional barriers between groups that can deliver more, collectively, than as individual units. This approach to value adding by bringing disparate groups together is echoed in each of the three sections where enhancements in the traditional value adding activities have been delivered by multi-skilling and encouraging overlapping involvement.

Instantaneous resistance change during martensitic transformation in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy has been studied using a low-noise electronic system. The smallest signals recorded in this investigation were of the order of 10 pv. These small signals did not show the initial increase reported by earlier investigators to support a double shear mechanism.&apos; A variety of pulse shapes and sizes was observed during "burst" transformations, and these signals were neither a linear function of the size of martensite plates nor of the volume fraction transformed. Even the smallest signals, presumably from single plates, showed complications resulting from elastic and/or plastic deformation, shock wave propagation, and so forth, which are inherent in the growth process of a martensite plate. The time of formation and interface velocity determined froni this experiment agree very well with the pioneering work of Bunshalz and Mehl.&apos; AN Fe-30 at. pct Ni (c0.005 pct C) alloy was used to study the time of formation of martensite plates. Martensitic transformations, unlike the nucleation and growth processes, are usually characterized by an extremely fast reaction rate. During the transformation, the crystal structure changes and this change is propagated through a finite volume of the parent crystal lattice within a very short time interval. The interface between the two phases probably consists of moving dislocations, and the time of formation of the plate depends on how fast this dislocation interface can move. Knapp and Dehlin~er or Cottrell and Bilby mechanisms, or similar dislocation models, can be used to calculate the time of formation of a martensite plate of a given size. In the past, conventional photographic technique475 as well as electrical resistivity techniques"~-" have been used to measure the time of formation of a martensite plate. The specific resistance of the martensitic phase in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy is lower than that of the austenite phase. Therefore if a current is passed through a small austenite sample in series with a large external resistance, then one would observe a voltage change across the sample as martensite is formed. Such dc measurements are shown in Fig. 1. The initial large voltage drop in Fig. 1, at the M, temperature, is due to a "burst" transformation where a large number of plates are formed in a cataclysmic manner within a very short interval of time. Even during the later stages of transformation as shown in Fig. 1, one can observe discontinuous voltage changes due to small bursts. In order to resolve the time scale of such discontinuous stages, the voltage signals are amplified and fed into a highspeed oscilloscope. In this investigation a low-noise amplifier was used for the first stage of amplification. The signal to noise ratio was further improved by the design of a pulse transformer. This transformer was capable of amplifying the signal by a factor of six. Voltage signals were studied over a wide time scale ranging from 2 sec to 0.1 psec. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Specimen Preparation. Specimens were cut from induction-melted Fe-30 at. pct Ni (<0.005C) alloy and cold-rolled to 0.2 by 1 mm cross section and an average length of 5 cm. During mechanical shaping, the specimens were strain-annealed at 950°C for 24 hr in vacuum. Finally the finished samples were vacuum-annealed at 1000°C for 6 hr and water-quenched to room temperature. The average grain diameter was 0.02 cm. B) Cooling System. The M, temperature of the alloy was -55°C. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement which was used to cool the specimen at a slow rate. The specimens were mounted inside a i -in.-diam hole in the 2-in.-long section of the copper specimen holder. This cavity was filled with silica gel. The powder metallurgy and arc-cast types of wrought molybdenum stock were studied in rotating beam fatigue. Endurance ratios of unnotched specimens after 5x10 cycles were found to be 0.74 and 0.81, respectively. Fatigue notch factors (K,) of 1.36 and 2.05, respectively, were obtained on V-notched specimens having a theoretical stress-concentration factor Kt = 3.1. MOLYBDENUM and its alloys are rapidly gaining importance as engineering materials of construction for high temperature applications. AS a wrought material, molybdenum and its alloys are outstanding above 1800°F. It is necessary, however, with molybdenum to provide elevated temperature oxidation protection. This is currently being studied by a number of investigators. Thus far, there have been no published data on the fatigue behavior of molybdenum either at room temperature or at elevated temperature. The knowledge of fatigue behavior, particularly notched fatigue behavior, becomes increasingly important as the engineering importance of a material increases, especially from the design standpoint. The work described here was directed toward determination of the notched and unnotched rotating beam fatigue characteristics of molybdenum at room temperature. Also, it was desired to learn whether any difference exists between wrought molybdenum of the powder metallurgy and the are-cast types. Fabrication History of Bar Stock For this work, bar stock was procured from Climax Molybdenum Co. (are-cast type) and from Westing-house Electric Corp. (powder metallurgy type). The processing histories of these materials are listed in Table I. The first lot of are-cast molybdenum was deoxidized by aluminum additions. The second lot was deoxidized by carbon." Both lots of the powder Microstructure A microscopic examination of these materials, as received, revealed the powder metallurgy molybdenum to be free of inclusions and to be finely fibered. On the other hand, the are-cast C molybdenum possessed numerous carbide inclusions, and the arc-cast A appeared to have coarse grained fibers. These are shown in Fig. 1. Owing to the large apparent difference in fineness of fiber between the are-cast A and the powder product and are-cast C, a check was made of the recrystallized grain sizes to determine whether these differences persisted. A series of recrystallization anneals revealed mixed grain sizes in both the are-cast A and the powder product. Variations in grain diameter of as much as 50 times were found after full recrystallization at 1200°C for 30 min. There was no distinction between the two. Arc-cast C was not checked. Room Temperature Mechanical Properties Prior to subjecting the materials to fatigue tests, room temperature mechanical properties were determined. These data, together with the tensil: strength of the notched bars, data,togetherare listed in Table tensil: There were no significant differences in the tensile strengths of the two types of molybdenum. However, the powder metallurgy material was generally more ductile and yielded at a somewhat lower stress than the arc-cast material. Tensile strengths of the notched specimens indicated a slightly greater notch strengthening effect in the are-cast C than in the powder product, lot 2. Room Temperature Fatigue Properties Sample Preparation: Specimens were prepared for use in R. R. Moore rotating beam fatigue machines. These specimens had a continuous radius test section with a minimum diameter of 0.260 in. The specimens were prepared by grinding to shape and polishing to produce a smooth unworked surface. Polishing consisted of rotating a disk in the continuous radius section on which were attached, successively, emery belts of 240, 400, and 600 grit. The specimens were slowly rotated during the operation. The belt speed was high, and rotation was such that polishing scratches were longitudinal. Unnotched Fatigue Properties: Unnotched fatigue data were obtained from a number of specimens of each of the four lots of molybdenum. The results of the tests are presented in Fig. 2. In the present study, we have investigated the conditions for the formation of bubble clusters and the effect of well-defined agitation on the stability of clusters. A specially designed cell was used in which bubble clusters could be formed at the surface of a porous block in a fluidized bed of relatively coarse hydrophobic silica particles. The clusters then rose through a flow field of known turbulent characteristics. The size of the clusters before and after passing through the turbulent zone were measured using a high speed camera. The influence of shear rate on the deformation of the bubble clusters was investigated. The results showed that the Kolmogarov microscale was much smaller than the maximum cluster size, suggesting that the breakage of the clusters was mainly due to interaction with clusters in the inertial convection sub-range.

The ore treated at the reduction plant (called Yangdei) of the Chiksan -Mining Co., Korea, is brought from four of the company mines, and from the small tribute mines. The largest shipments conic from Sajunkohl mule, situated about a mile and a half from the mill (Fig. 1). The ore is quartz of medium hardness. The overage assay value in gold is $6.95 per ton. At the mine the ore is put into bin,, and is Mien trammed over an 8 per cent. grade to the tipple bins above the mill, where the ore is drawn through the hull holes as desired. The capacity of the tipple bins is about 3,500 tons. On, from Moonsukohl, Chung Tarrie, Yang Chun, and the tribute mines is brought in by bulls and bull wagons. Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. Adsorption isotherms of the mentioned metals from individual solutions for different free cyanide concentrations have been obtained. Values of the constants of Freundlich isotherm equation have been calculated. Metal cyanide complexes affinity to activated carbon was determined.

Various methods are given for estimating the number per unit volume and average size of convex particles from measurements on a projection through a slice of the structure. The determination of the size distribution is considered specifically for spherical particles. The results are applicable to any type of transmission microscopy and also to the correction of measurements made by reflected light on semitransparent materials. WITH the advent of electron transmission microscopy, the metallurgist is confronted with the problem of relating a projected image to the three-dimensional properties of the structure. This paper deals with the estimation of the number per unit volume and size of particles dispersed in a matrix. The case of convex particles will first be treated (the results will be applicable as approximations to particles of more general shape) and then spherical particles will be considered specifically. The latter represent a special case frequently encountered in practice and one which is also amenable to a calculation of the effect of overlap on the observed particle-size distribution. Although the present treatment was prompted by the needs of the electron microscopist, the results are applicable to transmission studies with any type of radiation. In addition, they can be used in the analysis of semitransparent materials by reflected light, the depth of light penetration corresponding to the thickness of the slice or section used in the transmission studies. 1) CONVEX PARTICLES 1.1) General Expression for N,. We will suppose that a "center" (such as the center of mass) is assigned to each particle. The convention used for defining the center is immaterial providing it does not depend on the orientation or location of the particle. Consider a slice through the structure having a pair of parallel faces a distance t apart. It will be assumed that the slice is randomly located with respect to its perpendicular distance from some fixed point, but it is not necessary to assume that its orientation is random. Our problem is to deduce the relationship between the number of par- ticle images seen on an orthogonal projection through the slice with the number, Nv, of particles per unit volume in the original structure.* *Symbols are listed in the Table. The expected number of particles with centers lying within the slice is Nvt per unit area. In addition, there will be elements in the slice contributed by particles whose centers lie without. The number of such elements will be the same as the number of intersections occurring on a two-dimensional plane through the structure; namely N~K, where K is the mean distance, Fig. 1, between tangent planes to a particle averaged over all particles, i.e., Where Ni is the number of particles of class i having the same shape and size, and pi (4, 8) is the probability that an i particle will have a given orientation with respect to the slice. If the particles are randomly oriented, then K is independent of the orientation of the slice and equal to the mean cali-per diameter. The total number of particle elements in the slice is therefore Nv(t + K) per unit area, but fewer will be seen as separate images on the projection plane because of overlap. If MA is the number of elements "lost" by overlap, the number of images per unit area will be NA = Nv(t + K) -MA 121 MA is a function of the slice thickness and must vanish at t = 0. JOHNSON, Pittsburgh, Pa.-I hope that this contribution of Mr. Washburne&apos;s is only the first of a series dealing more in detail with the very important problems involved. Pores are of two kinds: Those which are entirely inclosed, so that they do not belong to a system of communicating pores tapped by the bore hole or shot hole; second, those which do so communicate. Porosity, of course, includes both. But since pores of the first class are valueless to us, we should confine our attention to the latter, for which I propose the term "effective porosity." This should be measured by the Wisconsin method, based on the quantity of fluid that can be introduced by the aid of vacuum. Another factor which requires attention in this connection is the dependence of the extractability upon the rate of loss of pressure, as affected by the number of holes, and the rapidity of their completion, the existence of uncontrolled wells, the use by other operators of vacuum pumps upon the casing head, the exhaustion of a gas field in the same reservoir prior to the discovery of the oil, etc. The extractability depends upon the pressure available for the exclusion of the oil from the reservoir into the hole. The action of gravity in bringing oil into the hole is relatively small where the pores are very small, as is so frequently the case.

.It the present time there are four base metals being used for automo-tive bearing alloys. Of course there are numerous variations in the amounts of alloying elements added to each base metal and nearly all of these alloys have the conventional, if not classical, duplex structure; that is, they are composed of a hard constituent embedded in a soft matrix. The well-known theory is that the former will wear well, while the latter will be plastic enough to allow the bearing to be broken in and conform to the contours of the shaft. The requirements of the modern bearing have been most aptly described by W. M. Corse: In order to meet the engineering demands of today a good bearing metal must be able to carry the weight of the shaft and stand up under steady or suddenly applied loads, or even blows ill sorne types of service. A certain amount of plasticity is desired to compensate for minute irregularities in the shaft or bearing surface, and to permit yielding, thereby avoiding dangerous stresses in bearing and shaft and pre-venting overheating and rapid wear of parts. Less plasticity is required in a bearing tuetal if the surfaces of bearings and journals are machined accurately, aligned, and kept in alignment. It is desirable, of course, that a bearing metal have a low coeffi-cicnt of friction. Under most operating conditions the friction depends on the unit, pressure of the bcaring, the speed, the temperature, and the properties of the lubricant. A good bearing metal must have a low rate of wear to reduce the necessity for frequent replacements, and adjustment of the bearings. It must wear more rapidly, however, than the journal or shaft running on it, because replacement of the journal or shaft is more difficult and costly than replacement of the bearing.&apos; The hardness of the bearing alloy is a property closely related to several of the foregoing. With a duplex microstructure, the measurement of hardness with any of the usual commercial devices means little. The Bierbaum method of measuring the hardness of the individual canstituents was developed to fill this need. MICROCHARACTER The Bierbaum MicroCharacter~,~ measures the scratch-hardness of a solid by pulling a weighted diamond point over the surface. El presente estudio describe el uso de la palinología y su aplicación a la geología económica. Asimismo, revisa la morfología y la clasificación de las esporas y polen, como la distribución de este por corrientes y la relación de la "lluvia de polen" con la vegetación actual. Se describen también las técnicas palinológicas en la preparación de muestras, los datos sobre la preservación del polen y esporas en los sedimentos, los efectos del intemperismo y la acción que sufren los granos de polen y esporas cuando se les encuentra a grandes profundidades. De otro lado, se narra el establecimiento de zonas palinológicas como los conocimientos sobre los cambios florales, determinando que la evolución es el factor principal que se emplea para las zonaciones palinológicas, aunque las condiciones climáticas y los efectos de sedimentación no generan variaciones en la flora, siendo de importancia en trabajos de correlación local. Finalmente, a través de un ejemplo, se explica la importancia estratigráfica de los estudios palinológicos en el Perú.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts of fine bulky materials (<3 mm). These wastes are mostly given to specialized landfill sites. Starting out from classical and traditional beneficiation processes a new research project was initiated to work on certain new ways to efficiently separate plastic material mixes. First basic results show that the use of new and improved thermal beneficiation methods is a great implementation in the field of plastics separation. The results can be further increased by a suitable combination with other methods as well. This leads to high-quality and almost pure separated plastics and rubber products, easy to sell on recycling product markets.
