"Falls of ground still cause around one-third of all underground mining fatalities. The recent introduction of mechanised room and pillar working into Indian coalmines is an example of the application of new design by measurement and safety monitoring strategies, which can be used to reduce falls of ground risks in mines.Rock Mechanics Technology, now part of Golder Associates UK Ltd (Golder), is providing rock bolt support and pillar design services to the mines using a design by measurement approach. This involves in situ monitoring to confirm support and pillar designs and pillar extraction sequences.Site examples are given of the support designs determined and the monitoring programs undertaken for both design and safety.Routine safety monitoring of roof movement using telltales is also described. A new auto warning telltale has been developed specifically to warn of imminent caving as pillars are extracted.The approach used by Golder has played a major role in ensuring the success of these projects. As a consequence, mechanised room and pillar working is now firmly established in India, and wider application is planned to help meet future demand for coal.The experience confirms that the design by measurement method for this application has important advantages over conventional design approaches using analytical or empirical methods. Firstly, it measures the design performance or outcome rather than trying to calculate or predict it. Secondly, it provides the opportunity for the design to be adjusted to obtain the optimum outcome. Thirdly, it can do this at a local level, so that the support design can be matched to changing conditions to give the most cost-effective design. The majority of the tailings dam operations in South Africa will be required to comply with the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) within the next one to three years, depending on the dam classification and the requirements of the respective investors and insurers. With up to 72 auditable requirements, the implementation of the Standard needs careful planning and prioritization. This paper focuses on the practical steps to GISTM compliance for tailings facilities in operation in South Africa. The discussions are based on current practices, South African regulations, and industry standards requirements. The possible changes in dam classifications and the associated requirements are presented.

The paper considers the geology and the coalfields that comprise the Scottish south area. It traces the history of known sources of spontaneous combustion and indicates the collieries concerned, with the position of the seams in the geological series where heatings have occurred. The methods of work over the years are described. It relates in detail the circumstances surrounding a fire at Bilston Glen Colliery in the Lothian Coalfield, and the heating at Killoch Colliery in the Ayrshire Coalfield, and the steps taken to deal with them. It also describes some of the difficulties in steep seam working. Methods adopted to prevent spontaneous combustion throughout the area are discussed, and some detail of the UNOR gas analyser is given. Finally, it comments on the present techniques in use in the area, particularly at Bilston Glen Colliery, to prevent spontaneous combustion.

"Present paper deals with the investigation of a Hungarian pumice. Grinding experiments were carried out in a stirred media mill for various residence time. Ground samples were tested with laser particle size analyzer to determine and calculate the material fineness (particle size distribution and specific surface area). The lime adsorption capacity was measured to monitor the reactivity. Alkali activated cement paste was prepared using ground pumice with various alkali activators. Cube shaped specimens were produced from the paste and the uniaxial compressive strength was measured at the age of 7 days. The resulted alkali activated material structure was investigated by XRD and FTIR. The results of the experiments show that pumice fineness has strong impact on its hydraulic activity, hence on the compressive strength and the structure of the resulted binder. Relationships between grinding fineness, material structure and strength of the raw and mechanical activated material as well as the alkali activated cement were revealed. INTRODUCTION Pumice is a natural pozzolan which can be used as raw material for cementitious materials in limited portion owing to its low reactivity. Furthermore, due to its mineralogical composition it can be used for developing a new environmental friendly binder, namely alkali activated cements (AAC) which are inorganic alumina-silicate materials with good cementitious properties (Almalkawi et al., 2017; Özodabas and Yilmaz, 2013; Najimi et al. 2018; Yadollahi et al., 2015). Despite being a rather recent research topic, many papers and books have been published focusing on various aspects of alkali activation. There is great variety of raw materials that can be utilized for AAC production. However, primary raw materials are very expensive and secondary materials are heterogenous in composition. Therefore, a more homogeneous and low price silicate would help to balance the properties and cost of resulting cement and easing the way for commercialization of AAC. However, the control of its reactivity is of great importance which can be realized using mechanical activation by grinding (Juhász and Opoczky, 1990; Djobo et al., 2016; Mádai et al., 2015). The goal of present paper is to investigate the effect of mechanical activation of pumice on the properties of the resulted alkali activated cement."

The extractive metallurgical industry is a major consumer of high-temperature process heat. It is, consequently, a major contributor of C02 emissions and other greenhouse gases derived from the combustion of fossil fuels for heat and electricity generation, or from the process itself. These emissions can be substantially reduced by replacing fossil fuels with solar energy as the source of process heat. Concentrated solar radiation can supply a large amount of thermal energy to endothermic reactions at temperatures exceeding 2000 K. Another potential for C02 emission reduction exists as well. Thermodynamically, the total amount of energy required for metal production at any given temperature is the enthalpy change of the reaction, AH. Of this total, an amount equal to the Gibbs free energy AG must be supplied as high quality energy in the form of electrical work or by using a reducing agent. Many conventional metallurgical electrolytic processes and reducing furnaces are unable to add only the thermodynamically required electricaVchemical energy due to process inefficiencies. Electrical work in excess of AG for the reaction may be used to supply process heat, or excess chemical reducing agent burned to supply process heat. Besides the thermodynamic and economic drawback, this inefficiency results in excess C02 emissions derived from the combustion of fossil fuels. With these practices, energy becomes an important cost element of the metal produced. Highly-concentrated solar energy has the demonstrated potential to separate these two forms of process energies, allowing the addition of only the thermodynamically required high-quality energy while high-temperature solar process heat is provided to the reactor. Examples of metal oxide reduction processes that have been studied experimentally in solar furnaces include the production of Fe, Al, AI/Si alloy, Mg, Zn, Tic, Sic, CaC2, TIN, Si3N4, and AIN by carbothermic reduction of their oxides, and the high-temperature solar- electrothermal reduction of ZnO.

A two-dimensional finite element program has been modified and extended to account for some of the rock mechanics complexities associated with single entry development of longwall coal mine panels. Program capability includes arbitrary assignment of element properties without regard to element ordering, anisotropic elastic, plastic and brittle rock properties that may be time dependent (aging), arbitrary mining sequences and provision for the effects of artificial support on the adjacent strata. Failure is according to an extended von Mises criterion that may be linear or quadratic in form; flow rules are obtained from the yield function taken as the plastic potential, but brittle behavior is treated as a discontinuous process of material properties change with deformation. In either case the extent of failure is calculated from the external boundary conditions. Application of the program to essentially two-dimensional problems resulted in lose agreement between calculated displacements and field measurements in the double entry system. Bleeder entries were stable in one locality and not in another. Artificial support had little influence on stability.

Dangerous goods, known as hazardous materials in the USA, are subject to special controls during transport to ensure the safety of the public. Dangerous goods are divided into nine classes, and Class 1 is devoted to explosives. Unlike storage or manufacturing, explosive transportation crosses the political boundaries of localities and nations, and its regulation must be centrally managed to avoid duplicate costs of complying with multiple regulations. Additionally, the transport of dangerous goods occurs by four different modes – highway, rail, vessel and air. While each mode has differences which must be addressed, the fundamental principles of classification, packaging, hazard communication and documentation remain the same. When a shipment travels by multiple modes and across borders, consistent regulations become paramount to cost efficiency. This is a common occurrence in the growing global economy.

"The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. This paper presents elements of the Virtual Working Environment for identification of hazards occurring in the mining industry. The Virtual Working Environment includes models of machinery and models of anthropometric features. Examples are given for identification of technical hazards at the design stage using the following computer programs: Finite Elements Method, Multibody System Analysis and Human Body Modeling. One of the methods to improve work safety at the machine and equipment maintenance stage is to share design and operational knowledge in a form of an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM). An IETM is created using so-called reusable knowledge elements connected by relationships. A metamodel created in Unified Modeling Language is one of the forms for description of these relationships. The metamodel can represent, for example, interrelations between elements of repair procedures. Examples of procedures realized during the replacement of a damaged cutting bit are presented and discussed.

During the repair of turbine blades by a laser cladding process, it is observed that interdendritic cracking occurs in the heat affected zone (HAZ). Auger electron spectroscopy, performed on sample broken at high temperature, reveals interfacial sulfur segregation, which is known to be one of the main causes of microcraking in the HAZ during welding processes. Moreover, thermal gradients generated by the process are responsible for important thermomechanical stresses. In the present work, the finite element code Comsol Multiphysics is used to simulate the laser cladding process in order to determine both the thermal field and, using an elastoplastic law, the stress field inside the component. The originality is that the temperature history calculated in the thermomechanical model is extracted then injected in a segregation model in order to calculate the local segregation behavior. This model can be eventually used to predict the risk of cracking as a function of process parameters and alloy chemistry.

The Bureau of Mines studied single - step catalytic vapor - phase hydrogenation of oils derived from coal and oil shale . Treatment of middle oil , from hydrogenation of bituminous coal , gave good yields of gasoline with a German - made molybdenum- zinc - chromium catalyst . The Bureau also achieved good results with duplicates of this catalyst made from domestic raw materials . In one set of experiments with the German catalyst , 38 to 52 wt pct of feed was converted to gasoline . The total liquid product was 91 to 98 wt pct of the feed . Not all this gasoline can be claimed as production , however , because about 20 pct of the feed was in the gasoline range , and part of it undoubtedly survived the hydrocracking treatment . Hydrogenation of crude shale oil in the presence of cobalt molybdate catalyst produced a total liquid product of 89 wt pct of feed . The hydrogenation converted 27 wt pct of feed to gasoline and 44 wt pct of feed to diesel fuel . The remaining liquid product , 18 wt pct of feed , was residue boiling above diesel fuel . The gasoline was of poor quality , with an octane number of 39.1 . The overall product seemed a suitable feed stock for a conventional refining operation . Coker distillate hydrogenation , using a cobalt molybdate catalyst , gave a total liquid product of 97 vol pct of feed ; of this product 60 vol pct was jet fuel and 40 vol pct was diesel fuel . "Since 1985, a comprehensive automation system has been installed at the Outokumpu Oy Zinc Plant, Kokkola, Finland. In leaching and solution purification special sample handling equipment, on-line analyzers and instruments, and a computer-based control system with duplicated supervisory stations have been installed. The system has enabled closer control of the process and more efficient use of labor. Since its installation recovery of zinc has improved, and use of zinc dust, steam, and water have decreased. The system has performed reliably. It includes optimizing programs and process study tools, which facilitate improving process performance. An expert system has been built-up to prompt process personnel to take appropriate action on the basis of process data. In electrolysis a similar system, based on extensive monitoring of the process and of production of zinc cathodes, is used to maximize- current efficiency by maintaining optimum conditions in the process. It is planned that in the future the control systems will be integrated and extended to cover the roasting plant and effluent control.IntroductionThe Zinc PlantThe Zinc Plant of Outokumpu Oy Metallurgical Division at Kokkola, on the West Coast of Finland, has grown from a 90,000 t/a plant founded in 1969 to become, with its present capacity of 170,000 t/a, one of the world's ten largest zinc plants. Especially since the completion in 1988 of a thorough modernization programme, it is also among the world's most modern.The Kokkola plant takes its raw materials from Outokumpu's own mines, Vihanti and Pyhasalmi in Finland, and Tara in Ireland, and from outside sources. Concentrates are roasted in two Lurgi fluid-bed furnaces, and the calcine is leached and iron removed by the Conversion process. Following this copper, cobalt, and cadmium are removed, and zinc is refined by electrowinning. The leaching and purification, and the cell-house are automated under computer-based control, and anode and cathode handling in the cell-house are mechanized and fully automatic."

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a committee consisting of H. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr. J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is extremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. of fixed combustible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate; but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charged coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible will leave the furnace only partly burned, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven off per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 20 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. "IntroductionTHE GIANT YELLOWKNIFE property is on the west side of Yellowknife bay, Great Slave lake, N.W.T., some 600 air miles north of Edmonton. This paper deals with the underground development and mining of the complex system of orebodies which have produced, in the first fifty-six months of operation (May, 1948, to December, 1952), 652,464 tons of ore with an average grade of 0.80 ounces of •gold per ton (1).The mine has been developed from three vertical shafts designated A, B, and C. Figure l shows the positions of these openings with respect to the known ore-bearing zones and the surface plant.A shaft was sunk to a depth of 522 feet in 1945-46, primarily as a prospect shaft for investigation and development of the East Zone orebody. Drifting was carried out on the 200-and 325-foot levels. Before this development had been completed it was clear that the funds immediately available made it imperative to get revenue from production as soon as possible. By the beginning of 1946, the remarkably high-grade character of the ore in the present B Shaft area had been established by surface drilling, and the decision was made to obtain initial production from this source. Since known orebodies at shallow horizons were to be developed quickly, the choice of a suitable rock outcrop for the shaft was something of a problem."

Industrie 4.0 is slowly but surely arriving in the melt shops. Furnaces are being equipped with more and more sensors, digital models are increasing the degree of automation, and information is being shared between different aggregates within the plant. Because the electrode control system plays a key role in electric steelmaking, it naturally assumes an important position in the melt shop’s Industrie 4.0 strategy. In addition to reliable, state-of-the-art core regulation functionality, monitoring and reporting tools and the ability to communicate with other equipment are also required. Therefore, the latest generation of our electrode control system, the Melt Expert, was developed based on Industrie 4.0 design principles. Intelligent plant condition diagnostics, performance monitoring, and user-defined reporting are essential modules in this new system. With these functionalities, electrode control systems are developing into the information and control center of the furnace. A newly developed software app brings most relevant process information to mobile devices. This feature allows steelmakers to keep an eye on the performance of their equipment anytime and anywhere. This paper describes the new features of the electrode control system and shares our customers’ operational experience. Our focus is on the practical aspects of plant status monitoring, KPI reporting, and diagnostic functionality as well as the improvements achieved.

This summary of State laws or explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful In determining whether relevant statutes exist, and In locating them quickly,-with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

Freeport IndonesiaÆs DOZ (Deep Ore Zone) mine is scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining methods and will have a number of major improvements when compared to previous block cave mines in the district. The DOZ will have an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system than in previous underground mines in the district. This paper will describe the mine plan, haulage, and ventilation systems, and compare them to those used in other operations in the district.

THE writer has long been interested in seeking an explanation of the upper heat effect in the copper-tin alloys over the a + ß range, first described in 1913. These notes are offered, not at all as the final explanation of this heat effect, but rather to indicate certain progress which has been made toward establishing what happens over this temperature interval. While working on the thermal analysis of the copper-rich kalchoids (copper-tin-zinc alloys), it was noted that those alloys containing major portions of tin and minor portions of zinc exhibited two marked heat effects, one at about 520° C. and the other at about 600° C., instead of the single effect which is generally observed in either of the two binary series. This matter was discussed with Dr. Guertler, who suggested that a heat effect at about 600° C. in the pure copper-tin alloys might be expected. This led to a more searching examination of the thermal critical points in the pure copper-tin alloys, with the result that a marked, although somewhat weak, heat effect was located at about 600°. Somewhat later, this upper heat effect was discussed with Dr. Burgess, and it was requested that the Bureau of Standards make heating and cooling curves of one of these alloys for the purpose of removing any possible doubt as to the actual presence of the heat effect. Results obtained by the Bureau are given in Plate I. In an earlier paper1 differential curves were published showing that the heat effect occurred at constant temperature over the a + ß range and increased in magnitude with the amount of a up to a point somewhat above 20 per cent. tin. No heat effect was noticed at this temperature in the eutectoid alloy. The existence of this heat effect seems to require a modification of the present copper-tin diagram in the a + ß field, and it has been the object of the work here presented to secure the evidence upon which such a change should be based.
