A comprehensive pre-feasibility study has been conducted by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce CVRD) for Niquel do Vermelho nickel laterite deposit. Within this study, five integrated flowsheet options were evaluated via batch and pilot campaigns at Lakefield Oretest, over an intensive six-month period from receipt of ore to final reporting. Key technical objectives set by the client included demonstrating the technical viability of the beneficiation of several ore types, processing through integrated pressure acid leach/mixed hydroxide precipitation (PALIMI-IP) and mixed sulfide precipitation (PALIMSP) circuits, and the treatment of barren liquors to meet stringent environmental requirements. Refining of the MHP was by ammonia re-leach and solvent extraction (SX) to produce LME-grade nickel cathodes, NiCO3, NiO and CoS. LME grade nickel and cobalt was also produced by oxidation of the MSP and hydrogen reduction on the leachate. The database and data acquisition system, along with web-based reporting, enabled rapid turnaround on both daily and more comprehensive run reports, making it possible for speedy and confident decisions on operating conditions of the complex flowsheets. The high value of developing such data is emphasized and discussed as pivotal in the successful progression of laterite projects through to sustainable commercial viability. The low-grade talc deposits in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, are associated with a mafic-ultramafic rock complex that is part of a widely distributed schist and gneiss group. These rocks form a synform structure overlying Inner Piedmont lithology. Paragenetic sequence of the Tallapoosa talc is interpreted as enstatite-anthophyllitetalc. Talc occurs as massive boulders formed by the alteration of enstatite-anthophyllite and as finely disseminated discrete particles in the enclosing saprolite matrix. Weathered rock reaches depths as great as 60 feet. The quality and quantity of the talc, however, are variable. Mineral analyses of the talc-bearing samples, by petrographic grain count, indicate a talc content of 16 to 26 percent. Most of the talc occurs as plates or scales that are moderately stained with limonite. Fibrous talc also occurs in the deposits and is often mistaken for anthophyllite asbestos which is intimately associated with the talc. The size, shape, and occurrence of the talc deposits precludes any method of min¬ing other than open-cut. A small-scale mining operation began in the district in 1969. Potential capacity of the operation is 5, 000 tons per year. Inferred reserves, based on field investigations, are placed at approximately 8 million tons. THE effect of mining in the red-ore mines of the Birmingham district has been observed for some time, but, except in a few localities, little difficulty has been experienced from disturbance of cover. Cave-ins near the outcrop and fracturing of the surface at greater distances are the most pronounced manifestations of disturbance, while limited areas at points distant from the outcrop and under greater depth of cover have actually subsided. There is no doubt but that in time, because of failure of pillars, extensive fracturing and widespread settlement of the surface will result, particularly along the slope of Red Mountain, where mining has been under way for many years. Were it not that the orebed is overlain by one or more water-bearing formations, the fracturing or settlement of the surface would not be serious; but because of these formations, fracturing of the top rock may in itself be of sufficient importance to warrant the adoption of protective measures. Until development openings and surface plants are transferred to Shades Valley, protection of the surface will probably not be considered imperative, as the area involved is not of particular value for agricultural or building purposes. Further, the collapse of pillars over a wide area may develop squeezes that, if not controlled, may jeopardize the integrity of the mines and necessitate a change in development, from slopes to vertical shafts, at a much earlier period than is now contemplated. The occurrence of heavy beds of strong tough materials at varying distances above the orebed make it doubtful whether any serious disturbance of the surface will be experienced at any considerable distance from the outcrop, although some settlement will probably take place. It is certain, however, that no great volume of water will enter the mines from fracturing of the Fort Payne chert bed, as this is known to be a compact and practically impervious formation beyond the leached zone. Not so much can be said, however, regarding other possible sources of water, as pervious beds and through faults that may be encountered in future mining operations.

THE Soudan mine in the Vermilion district of northeastern Minnesota is the oldest iron mine in the state. It has shipped ore every year since 1884 and still contributes a yearly quota of high grade lump ore. No comprehensive report on the Vermilion iron-bearing district has appeared since Clements' monograph,' but Gruner2 discussed the possible origin of the ores in 1926, 1930, and 1932, and recently Reid and Hustad have added data on mining and geology .3, 4 For many years geologists of the Oliver Iron Mining Div., U. S. Steel Corp., have kept up to date a series of plans and vertical sections of the Soudan mine. In connection with mine operation considerable diamond drilling has been done, and this, together with the mine openings, has permitted a reasonably accurate picture of the structure of the orebodies and wall rocks. It has long been evident to geologists familiar with the mine that the ores were not a result of weathering, a point emphasized by Gruner in 1926 and 1930. As the deeper orebodies were developed it also became clear that replacement had played an important part in their development. In recent years it has been recognized that other iron ores were formed by replacement, as Roberts and Bartly5 have argued strongly for the deposits at Steep Rock Lake. On the basis of these facts G. M. Schwartz suggested to members of the Oliver staff that it would be desirable to study the evidence of replacement, particularly the possible alteration of the wall rock which would be expected if the replacement was a result of hypogene solutions. Rock Formations: The formations directly involved in the iron orebodies of the Soudan mine are few though far from simple. The country rock is largely the Ely greenstone of Keewatin age consisting of a mass of metamorphosed lava flows, tuffs, and intrusives which have been more or less altered by hydrothermal solutions. The predominant rock is chlorite schist. Interbedded with the original flows and tuffs are a series of beds and lenses of jasper to which the name Soudan formation has been applied. In the Vermilion district the term jaspilite has been used for interbanded jasper and hematite. According to modern usage these jasper or jaspilite beds do not comprise a formation separate from the Ely greenstone, inasmuch as the beds of jasper are interbedded with the flows and tuffs of the upper part of the greenstone. It would more nearly accord with modern usage to consider the Soudan beds a member of the upper part of the Ely formation. Because of incomplete rock exposure and exploration the number of interbedded jaspilite beds is unknown. In the mine, however, as many as nine major beds of jasper are known on a cross-section of one limb of the syncline, with an equal number on the other limb. In addition diamond drill cores show beds of greenstone down to half an inch in thickness. The thin beds are probably always tuffs. Structure: Rock structure in the Soudan area is complex, and because there are no recognizable horizons within the greenstone it is extremely difficult to work out the details. Generally speaking, the major regional structure is an anticlinorium, the axis trending east-west, with a westerly pitch. The Soudan mine is related to a synclinal structure on the north limb of the anticline about a mile from the west nose of the folded iron formation. The general structure at the mine is that of a closely folded minor syncline on the major regional anticline. A cross fault has dropped the east side so that the bottom of the syncline has not been reached, whereas to the west it is well shown by the mine openings and diamond drill exploration. Throughout the mine the beds of jasper, and ore-bodies that have replaced the jasper, normally dip northward at angles of 80" or steeper. In detail the jasper beds are extremely folded, probably as a result of deformation while they were still relatively unconsolidated. Orebodies: Ore in the Soudan mine is mainly a hard, dense, bluish hematite. Locally ore has been brecciated and cemented by quartz. The vugs commonly occurring near the borders of orebodies are lined with quartz crystals. They seem to have formed as part of the ore-forming process and are evidence that no folding or compression of the ore has taken place. The orebodies are numerous, varying greatly in size. Many lenses of high grade hematite are too small to be mined. Some of the larger orebodies have been followed vertically for as much as 2500 ft and horizontally up to 1500 ft. The large ore-bodies are extremely irregular in outline in the plane of the beds of jaspilite. In width they are more regular, as they are strictly governed by the width of the jaspilite beds and the greenstone wall rock, which seems to have resisted replacement by hematite. At many places the orebodies replace the jaspilite completely and have a footwall and hanging wall of greenstone. At other places either one or both walls may be jaspilite. Geologists who have studied the orebodies in recent years agree that evidence for the replacement origin of the hematite bodies seems conclusive. AS noted above, many of the orebodies replace jaspilite beds from wall to wall with no evidence whatever of compaction. Gravity retaining walls have been constructed using Deep and Shallow Soil Mixing (DSM and SSM) since 1991 in the United States. These walls, for both temporary and permanent uses, were constructed by mixing cement with in-situ soils over a volume containing 100% of the required gravity wall zone. Modern design techniques have reduced costs substantially by forming the required gravity wall section as a composite mass. Using ratios of 15-35% by volume, treatment f the ground forming the required gravity section has reduced the cost from about $40 to about $20 per square foot. Design, construction and actual performance of these gravity walls are presented.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. The research has demonstrated that the ventilation of large-opening mines improves significantly by including ventilation requirements in the mine planning process and implementing some practical techniques during mining. Planning the location of long pillars to reduce the number of crosscuts between intake airways and return airways, positioning auxiliary fans in their proper locations, and establishing ventilation stoppings with minimal leakage all significantly improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. Mine operators that adopt these techniques in the mine ventilation plan will reduce mineworkers? exposure to airborne contaminants.

The Blue Joint Mtn. RARE II area may contain barite resources. One claim, the Woods Creek Barite No. 1, contains two veins of barite of drilling mud quality. The quantity of barite present could not be determined due to limited surface exposures. Sections 1, 2, 11 and 12 of T. 2 S., R. 23 W. in the study area are classified by the U.S. Geological Survey as prospectively valuable for geothermal energy resources. These sections border Blue Joint Creek Hot Springs, which are outside the study area.

The study of the plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals has been the subject of many investigations. In regard to the simple deformational processes, such as tension and compression, the early knowledge gained from studies of polycrystalline material has been supplemented by many significant researches on the behavior of single crystals. Unfortunately, this has not been true for more complicated deformational processes. As far back as 1927, G. I. Taylor1 wrote: It is impossible in the present state of knowledge to do more than give a possible reason why (face-centered cubic) crystals set themselves with a (110) direction in the plane of rolling, and at right angles to the direction of rolling. The explanation of why the orientation of the crystal axes round the transverse direction is what it is, must be left till the distortion of metals, and particularly single crystals of metals in the process of rolling, has been studied in greater detail. That this gap in the systematic study of deformation and recrystallization has not yet been filled was indicated by C. H. Samans, who wrote in 1934 that "only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature." Of these four studies, only those of S. Tanaka3 and T. Sakaoj4 both of whom worked with aluminum crystals, had quantitative significance. The other two, carried out by F. Wever5 and W. G. Burgers16 were of a qualitative nature. It is our hope that the present investigation may contribute something to the knowledge necessary for a rationalization of the origin of rolling textures in terms of the known behavior of single crystals, and may add pertinent information concerning the recrystallization characteristics of deformed single crystals.

STRATEGICALLY situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer-consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommer-cial operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennesse's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in Lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1, 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Official estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Con-gressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

Since its introduction to the petroleum industry in 1949 by Clark,1 hydraulic fracturing or "hydrafracing" has developed into a widely respected and useful technique for increasing production from petroleum reservoirs. Even then, Clark described production increases of from 6 to 100 barrels of oil per day (bopd). Since that time, others have described treatments in which production increased from 12 to 456 bopd, from only a show to 40 bopd;2 from 48 to 219 bopd; 3 from 500 to 1400 bopd and from a show to 192 bopd.4 Although representative of only a few of many successful hydraulic fracturing operational6 these increases in production attest to the past and potential value of the hydrafracing technique to the petroleum industry. The technique has received a considerable amount of theoretical and experimental attention.1, 5-20 Unfortunately, however, the degree of general understanding of the mechanics of hydraulic fracturing is still inadequate to solve many recurring problems. The practicing engineer is plagued with difficulties in predicting such factors as: (1) the required pressure and viscosity of the fracturing fluid to not only induce the fracture but to control the extent of its growth, (2) the strength characteristics and amount of proppant to include in the fluid so that the fracture is held open once the fluid pressure is decreased, and (3) the volume of the reservoir influenced by the induced fractures and the resulting increase in production. A major cause of these difficulties is the uncertainty associated with determining the orientation of the hydraulically induced fractures. One's natural conclusion in considering the problem is that the orientation of the fracture would depend on several variables, as, for example, the relationship between the viscosity and injection rate of the fluid and the

Blasting has an important impact on mining and milling well beyond the necessary ability to dig and load the ore efficiently. There is an increasing body of blasting research indicating significant impacts in crushing and grinding. These include increased production through higher output and fewer delays for bridging and jamming by oversize. In addition, fragmentation better suited to the crushing and grinding system is indicated to lead to reduce energy consumption by these activities, an important result in today’s environment. An important component of optimum fragmentation for this purpose appears to be micro-fracturing within individual fragments. This differs from fragmentation criteria for loading which focus mostly on fragment size. Therefore, one must analyze blasting broadly to obtain satisfactory results throughout the operation.

The refinery at the San Francisco Mint takes the bullion purchased by the receiving department, and carrying Illore than 200 parts of precious metals in 1,000, or, in mint parlance, over 200 fine, and separates and refines the various metals contained therein, using electrolytic processes exclusively. Bullion containing silver is treated in cells charged with a nitric electrolyte. These cells produce fine silver and leave a residue rich in gold. The residue from the silver-cells, together with crude gold-bullion, is treated in cells having a chloride electrolyte. These produce fine gold and leave a residue containing silver chloride. The latter is reduced to the metallic state with zinc and is then treated in the silver-cells. The various waste solutions and the wash-waters, after being freed from the bulk of their precious metals, still contain copper and other metals. These are removed by scrap-iron, and are then treated in the copper-cells, having a sulphate electrolyte. These cells produce pure copper, and collect a residue containing lead, some gold and silver, and all the metals of the platinum gronp that were in the bullion. This residue is relatively small, and is melted into bars and stored until suEcient accumulates to warrant treating it for platinum, etc. The refinery occupies three large and three small rooms. The large ones are, a melting-room, 30 by 34 ft.; a cell-room, 39 by 46 ft.; and a wash-room, 30 by 33 ft. The small rooms are used as foreman's osce, laboratory, and , re- spectively. The methods here described are those in use in December, 1909, when notes for the present paper were taken.

In recent years there have been significant advances in computing power and programming technology, enabling more complicated processes to be modelled in greater detail. This has led to increased understanding of these complex processes, including mineral processing circuits. JKSimMet was developed over the past 35 years, incorporating outcomes from various research projects conducted at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), part of the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland. It is a steady-state software program that allows the user to mass balance, model fit and simulate crushing, grinding and classification circuits. JKSimFloat has been developed over the past 20 years, incorporating outcomes from the JKMRC and other institutions around the world through the AMIRA International P9 project ? The Optimisation and Simulation of Mineral Processing Circuits. It is also a steady-state software program, similar to JKSimMet, but is focused on analysing flotation circuits. Both programs have been used in a wide variety of optimisation and design projects over many years. This paper provides an overview of both JKSimMet and JKSimFloat and examples of how both programs have been used to better understand, develop and optimise mineral processing circuits around the world.

Arizona leads all other states in the value of gemstones produced with an annual production which exceeds $3,000,000. Gemstones are an important component of the mineral wealth of the State. Turquoise, peridot, chrysocoll a, petrified wood, fire agate and crystallized mineral specimens are among the gemstones commercially mined. Numerous additional deposits are operated by hobbyists. The State's reputation as a source of gemstones and specimens for the collector and lapidary adds to the economy of the State by attracting tourists. Production of gemstones further adds to the State's economy through employment in the value added gemstone processing industries and by employment of Native American craftsmen.

Bumper subs are currently used in offshore operations to permit a constant weight to be carried on the bit while drilling, regardless of the vertical motion imparted to the drill pipe by drilling vessel heave. As shown in this paper. the vertical motion of the lower end of the drill pipe (the bumper sub end) may be appreciably greater than the vessel heave. Therefore, the necessary stroke of bumper .rubs for successful operation is greater than thought in fie past. Also, there is an appreciable tendency of the drill pipe to buckle above the unbalanced type of bumper sub. Thus, more drill collars than previously used should be carried above unbalanced bumper subs to keep drill pipe straight. INTRODUCTION Drilling bumper subs are placed in the drilling string for various reasons. This paper is concerned with their use only as an expansion and contraction joint while drilling from a floating rig. In this application the bumper subs are normally located just above the drill collars and their function is to allow the driller to maintain accurate weight control on the bit regardless of up-and-down movement of the drilling vessel. This paper analyzes the effects of bumper subs on the drilling string and presents recommendations for their future use. When subjected to vertical oscillations, the drilling string behaves like a long, distributed system of mass and spring. The magnitude of vertical motion at the bumper sub is always greater than the heave of the drilling vessel due to the dynamic reponse of the drilling string. The ratio of these motions increases with the length of the drilling string, and may reach values of 1.5 or even 2 with strings 16,000 ft long. Thus, the total travel required in bumper subs can be considerably more than the motion of the drilling vessel. Lack of knowledge of this fact could have contributed to problems previously experienced with bumper subs. This fact can also lead to fatigue problems in the drilling string for very deep wells. Satisfactory operation should be obtainable whether hy-draulically balanced or unbalanced bumper subs are used in the drilling string. Theoretically, the balanced sub is preferable since its use does not require placing drill collars above the bumper sub to prevent drill-pipe buckling, an inherent characteristic of the unbalanced bumper sub. The current method of calculating weight of drill collars required to prevent helical buckling of drill pipe above unbalanced bumper subs is erroneous. Placing drill collars above the sub to prevent drill-pipe buckling has the same effect on dynamic response as increasing the length of the drilling string by an equal weight of drill pipe. Thus, total travel required in the subs is increased. Means for calculating the correct weight, which is much greater than previously thought, are given in this paper. BALANCED VS UNBALANCED BUMPER SUBS A drilling bumper sub is essentially a telescopic joint capable of transmitting torque at every position of its stroke. Thus, it allows the operator to isolate the weight of the drilling string from the weight of the drill collars above the bit. This permits the driller on a floating rig to maintain accurate control over the weight on bit — a control that is unaffected by vertical motion, due to wave and tide action of the drilling vessel. UNBALANCED BUMPER SUBS The unbalanced bumper sub is simply a splined tele~copic joint (Fig. I). Ordinarily, this arrangement will operate satisfactorily, but the presence of drilling fluid under pressure results in a pressure force that acts downward on the drill collars and bit, tending to open or extend the bumper sub. This downward force is equal to the pressure drop across the bit times the area indicated by diameter d2 in Fig. 1. Denoting this force by Fd, and the pressure drop across the bit by ?p yields Fb = (p/4)d22(?P) .........(1) There is also an upward-directed force given by Fu = (p/4) d22-d21)(?p) .......(2) which puts the drill pipe immediately above the bumper sub in compression, resulting in helical buckling. However, buckling is actually more severe than expected in that buckling occurs as if the compression were equal to Fd, rather than to Fu. This surprising phenomenon is well known as far as tubing is concerned;1-3 but, in contrast with the case of tubing, this force may shorten drill pipe only a few inches. Thus, this cannot explain the operating difficulties that sometimes have been encountered. However, having the drill pipe in compression and helically buckled is contrary to current practice; therefore, drill collars whose weight in mud is equal to the force Fd should be added above the bumper sub. This paper discusses the reaction of metal surfaces with fluorine. Fluorination reactions result in the formation of metal fluoride films which are "passive" toward further reaction of the metal with fluorine. These films are very adherent, and do not easily detach from the substrate metal by mechanical flexing or thermal shock. Exposure of passive films to a humid atmosphere produces hydrated metal fluorides which cause secondary fluorination reactions upon reexpo-sure of the metal surface to fluorine. The surface films formed range from 10 to 30A in thickness and they pow at the expense of surface oxide films. The apparent film formation is completed rapidly in 15 to 30 min on stainless steel and nickel surfaces. On copper and on Monel surfaces, the film at first grows rapidly, then increases slowly over an extended period of time. Passive films are formed at all fluorine pressures in the range from 0.1 to 1.4 atm at room temperature. ALL metals react when exposed to fluorine. These reactions generally produce surface films which consist of metal fluorides. The rate of reaction is largely determined by the extent to which these films are protective. Although there is an extensive literature concerning reactions of oxygen with metals, there are very few investigations reported concerning fluorine-metal reactions. Brown, Crabtree, and ~uncan' investigated the kinetics of the reaction of gaseous fluorine with copper metal which had been freshly reduced in hydrogen. The reaction rate was independent of pressure over the range from 6 to 60 torr. A logarithmic rate law was obeyed in the temperature range from 25" to 300" ~. There was some deviation at higher temperatures which could have been the onset of a parabolic law. The calculated film thicknesses ranged from about two molecular layers, 10A, for 5 hr exposure at room temperature to thirty-five molecular layers for 5 hr exposure at 200" . The authors concluded that no single mechanism could explain all the observations. O7Donnell and spatkowski2 studied the reaction of fluorine with copper at 450°C at pressures from lo to 133 torr. The reaction was found to be pressure -dependent and followed a logarithmic rate law. It was not entirely diffusion-controlled, and fluorine was thought to be the migrating species in the reaction. Miscellaneous metal-fluorine reactions were investigated by Haendler et ~1.~ Reaction products were identified but no rate data were determined. Air Prod- ucts and Chemicals, Inc., have conducted an investigation of reactions between fluorine and various metal powders at room temperature and 85° C. Fluoride film thickness as a function of time of exposure was reported on the assumption that the reaction takes place between fluorine and metal to form the normal metal fluoride. Surface areas of the powders were only estimated so the relative film thicknesses may not be exact. The data showed reaction rates which were generally logarithmic in character, the rate of film growth virtually ceasing after a few hours exposure time for some alloy powders. The effect of moisture on fluoride films was also investigated by measuring additional reaction with fluorine after exposure of passivated powders to atmosperic moisture. The fluorination of iron was studied by 0'~onnell~ at temperatures from 225" to 525" ~ and at pressures ranging from 20 to 200 torr. In all ranges, the reaction followed a logarithmic rate law and was dependent on the square root of the gas pressure. The author concluded that fluorine gas passes through pores in the film. As the film grows, the blocking of pores leads to a rapid decrease in reaction rate; hence a logarithmic rate law is observed. Jarry, Fischer, and Gunther' investigated the mechanism of the reaction of fluorine with nickel at about 600" to 700°C. On the basis of the metallographic examination of fluoride scales growing on the nickel and from separate radioautographic data, it was claimed that fluorine is the migrating species in the reaction. This is in sharp contrast to the growth of oxide films on nickel where it has been shown that nickel ions migrate through the scale to the gas-solid interface to react with oxygen. Few investigations have been reported of the reaction of fluorine with metal oxides. Such investigations should be of great significance for a better understanding of passivation in view of the ubiquitous oxide films on technical alloys. Haendler et al.3 studied the reaction of fluorine with oxides of copper, tin, titanium, zirconium, and vanadium. Copper (I) oxide reacted as follows in the temperature range 150" to 300"~: temperature above 300" ~ was required for the CuO to react to form additional copper fluoride. Ritter and smith7 also investigated the reaction of fluorine with copper (11) oxide. An oxide powder comprised of spherical particles with a fairly high surface area was reacted with fluorine, starting at room temperature and increasing to 100° C over a period of 3 or 4 hr. The initial reaction was slow until the fluoride film thickness reached about to or 15R at which time the reaction rate accelerated, then decreased again. Most of the kinetic data was obtained during this final phase of reaction. The authors conclude that the film grows slowly at first until the stresses developed in the distorted lattice are sufficient to rupture the initial

SINCE the installation at Kropfmuehl, Bavaria, of a modern flotation concentrator in 1938, the flake and fine graphite from the Passau area can now be delivered in about any normal specified carbon content of any size range up to a flake averaging about 0.7 mm. The graphite finds a wide German and export market for crucible manufacture, pencil leads, dry cells and other uses. A controversy over the origin of the graphite deposits is being resolved in favor of syngenesis rather than epigenesis. The syngenetic theory is newly supported by the yet unpublished work of Hartmann of the Bavarian Geological Survey. Development work and exploration for graphite in the area may be changed in direction as the syngenetic theory is accepted. Crystalline graphite is produced in the area east of Passau near the junction of Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, as shown in Fig. 1. This is the only graphite area of importance in Germany, and Gra-phitwerk Kropfmuehl AG is the only operating firm in the area. The plant and mine are located at Kropfmuehl near Hauzenberg, Kreis Wegscheid, about 10 miles east of Passau. A narrow gage railway from the mine connects with the German Railway at Schaibing Bahnhof. The Pfaffenreuth mines date from about 1730. Until the early 20th century mining operations were carried out in a haphazard fashion. During World War I graphite mining and milling was increased, since it had to cover almost all of the crucible needs of the Central Powers. Between the wars some 11 mines were operated by two large and several small companies, but under the Nazis these were consolidated by 1938 into the Kropfmuehl enterprise. Kropfmuehl built a modern flotation mill to treat its own ores and small amounts of custom ores and tailings from the area. Since Graphitwerk Kropfmuehl AG was an I.G. Farbenindustry subsidiary, it has been under Military Government Property Control and probably will be sold to private German capital. Geology The country rock of the graphite area is part of the "kristallines Grundgebirge," the series of old gneissic and schistose rocks that constitutes the bed rock of most of the Bohemian basin and rims the Sudeten-land. The gneissic rocks of the graphite area are considered to have been metamorphosed during the Carboniferous period. They are bordered on the north by granite stocks and penetrated by numerous smaller granite and pegmatitic intrusive rocks, as shown in Fig. 1. The gneiss is classed as a micaceous, coarse-grained cordierite gneiss by most investigators. It is much metamorphosed by the granite, particularly in the north near the larger granite bodies. Interbedded in the gneiss are the graphite seams and lenses, and also beds and lenses of crystalline limestone containing disseminated graphite in noncommercial quantities. The gneiss, together with the included graphite and limestone seams and lenses, is cut and displaced by a number of granite sills of medium to fine grain and by a large number of diorite lamprophyre dikes and a few syenite-pegmatite dikes. The lamprophyre dikes are of various mineral compositions and textures, but many are banded and richly impregnated with pyrite; while the syenite-pegmatite dikes are coarse-grained with good crystals of titanite, pyroxene, uralite and other green amphiboles. Most investigators and the miners speak only of diorite and granite dikes cutting the graphite seams. The diorite dikes are later than the granite and some of the faulting, as is evident from Figs. 1 and 2. Individual graphite seams and lenses may be mined for thicknesses of several feet up to several scores of feet, and for distances of several hundred feet. The aggregate thickness of a series of some 20 seams of graphite, limestone and interbedded gneiss at Kropfmuehl is stratigraphically about 450 ft. Laterally, the graphite in a seam may pinch out or grade into crystalline limestone. Graphite crystals also are found disseminated in the gneiss itself, although in unmineable concentrations. The faults that cut the graphite seams carry graphite for some feet or tens of feet away from the seams, apparently mechanically. Similarily, the graphite lenses themselves often contain mechanically introduced inclusions of wall rock, probably from flowage during folding. Graphite crystals make up 10 to 30 pct of the fresh, mineable graphite lenses at Kropfmuehl, averaging about 20 to 25 pct after hand-sorting by the miners. In weathered lenses, the graphite concentration is said to be as high as 50 pct. The associated primary and hydrothermal minerals are dom-inantly feldspar and calcite, plus quartz, pyrrhotite, pyrite, biotite and occasional garnet, hornblende, sphalerite and galena. Associated secondary minerals include kaolin, nontronite, mangano-oxide-silicates (mog), adularia and chlorite. The superimposed suite of siliceous cementation minerals present consist largely of opal, chloropal, chalcedony, jasper, and hyalite. The kaolin is of special interest since it too was mined as early as 1730 and was used in the well-known Nymphenburg porcelain from 1756 on. The kaolin is derived from the gneiss and the syenite pegmatites. The crystals of graphite vary in size within a given seam, but in seams more than a mile away from the granite on the north the average crystal-linity is less coarse, lowering the commercial value. The lenses in the Kropfmuehl-Pfaffenreuth area are the most developed, and are the only ones with deep workings now accessible.
