"In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit.This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes"

At the Director's dinner of the A.I.M.E. on. April 22, Mr. Sengier of the Union Minière du Haut Katanga was a guest. Though a member of the Institute for sev-eral years this was the first occasion on which he had had opportunity to meet with it, and in response to an invitation from President DeGolyer, after expressing his pleasure at being present, he told informally of the present development of the Congo with which he has been so closely related. From his remarks the follow-ing has been prepared.-EDITOR. AS you know, the Belgian Congo, a fairly large colony compared with the territory of Belgium, is in the center of Africa. Natural waterways, railroads now built and new railroads under construc-tion, give increasing means of transportation and are helping toward development. The mining industry is by far the most important part of our colonial activity. Considering that we are all engineers, I will confine my figures to mining enterprise. First I will show you the relative importance of the mining industry com-pared with the total exports of the Belgian Congo. During 1925 there was exported 100,000 tons of cop-per, valued at about $25,000,000; 900,000 carats of diamonds, 8000 lb. of gold, 1700 tons of cassiterite, 300 .tons of cobalt, and 20 grams of radium, of a total value of about $35,000,000. Other products to a value of about $12,000,000 and consisting mainly of palm nuts, palm oil, cotton, ivory, copal, rubber, were also exported. From this you will see that mineral products account for about 72 per cent of the total exported value. Copper alone amounts to 52 per cent of the total and 72 per cent of the mineral exports. All minerals, with the exception of gold, which is mined by the government, belong practically toy two mining companies in which American and British capi-tal is interested with Belgian. These two companies (one called Forminière, interested in the diamond busi-ness, and the other called the Union Minière, interested in copper, cobalt, tin and radium) were formed twenty-five years ago. They started producing in 1911, but the war prevented normal operations, and active de-velopment could only be carried on after the Armistice.

Corrosion tests should be designed so as to facilitate as far as possible the interpretation of results, consequently factors which may affect the rate of corrosion should be controlled as far as practicable, and very full data should be given regarding the conditions of the test. Among the most important factors affecting the rate of corrosion is often the rate of supply of oxygen to the metal surface. It is essential therefore to understand the mechanism by which oxygen is transferred from the liquid surface to the surface of the metal. The work of Adeney and his coworkers has thrown much light on this mechanism. They have shown1 that the aeration of deaerated water and salt solutions proceeds much more rapidly than can be accounted for by mere diffusion, and have suggested that downward "streaming" takes place from the surface of the water, due mainly to an increase of density brought about by evaporation. The evaporation reduces the temperature of the surface layer, and also increases the concentration in the case of salt solutions. The effect of evaporation in facilitating the transfer of oxygen to a metal and increasing the corrosion of the metal was shown in some experiments due to Friend.2 He tested the corrosion of mild steel plates immersed in water in glass jars, a steady stream of air being drawn over the surface of the water in the jars. The air passing through half the number of jars was saturated with moisture, that passing through the others was dried with calcium chloride. He found that "in every case the water exposed to dry air was approximately twice as corrosive as that exposed to air saturated with water vapor." Conditions for Quantitative Corrosion Tests These results show that we must either control or prevent evaporation at the liquid surface, if we wish to avoid effects on the rate of cor-

Large deposits of titaniferous iron-ore occur at Caribou, an old silver-mining camp in Boulder county, Colo., 17 miles west by south of Boulder, and a few miles northwest of the tungsten-mines. Professor Regis Chauvenet1 published a part analysis of the ore many years ago, but gave no description of the wall-rock. Caribou hill, which contains both the silver-bearing veins and the iron-ore deposits, is a low dome of gabbro surrounded by the Archæan schists and gneisses of the Front range of the Rocky mountains, the peaks of which, a few miles west of Caribou, attain an elevation exceeding 12,000 ft. The gabbro stock is roughly elliptical in outline, with approximate diameters of 1 and 3 miles. The crest of the dome is 10,500 ft. above sea-level, and the town and ore-cleposits are 500 ft. lower. Outcrops of the iron-ore occur in the town and extend NW. for 2,000 ft., where they disappear under the swampy meadows of Caribou park. Portions of the deposit are covered by drift, but one continuous outcrop is 900 ft. long and from 200 to 250 ft. wide. A second deposit is 0.25 mile south of the town along the eastern slope of the hill. It is not as well defined as the north bed, but is approximately 1,000 ft. long and from 100 to 200 ft. wide. The easily disintegrated ore does not form prominent outcrops, but the outlines of the deposits are readily traced by the large amount of ore fragments that cover the ground. Trenches and pits sunk on the outcrop expose a roughly banded magnetic iron-ore, with pyroxene as the principal gangue-mineral. The Gabbro. This rock was classified in the field as a gabbro from the presence of pyroxene and striated feldspars, and for convenience the field-name will be retained.

The anodic material was doped during the poured process with lead at different composition. It's confirm the apparition of the (Bindheimitte) SMbz07. The specific gravity of this specie is approximately 7.3 - 7.5, with this values is biggest the probability of sedimentation and smaller the slimes not sedimentabel.

The Meadow River No. 1 Preparation Plant, owned by Sewell Coal Company, a subsidiary of the Pittston Company, was commissioned in the spring of 1974. The plant is designed to process 400 TPH of 5" x 0 raw coal. The 5" x 114'l fraction is processed in a Heavy Medium Vessel with the 114 x 28M reporting to Deister Tables for cleaning. The 28M x 0 fraction is cleaned in flotation cells, with the froth going to clean coal vacuum filters and the tailings to a static thickener where the underflow is reclaimed on Refuse Filters prior to disposal. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the noise exposure in that particular environment. This Bureau of Mines publication describes several fault locators and methods, including time domain reflectometers, a frequency domain reflectometer, tone generators, an infrared method, the Murray loop method, and high-voltage "click" methods. The Bureau of Mines has been conducting research into these methods for several years, to improve mine safety and facilitate production through rapid, safe location of trailing-cable faults. The problems encountered in practical applications are discussed, and schematic diagrams of several instruments fabricated by the Bureau are presented. Since no present single method of locating trailing-cable faults is universally applicable, a kit composed of several of the more promising fault locators is advisable.

This paper, under the title of "The Genesis of Auriferous Lodes from a Chemical Point of View, Illustrated by Analyses of Samples Taken from the Chief Auriferous Area of New Zealand, Victoria and Queensland, by John R. Don, D.Sc., M.A., Lecturer on Geology in the University of Otago, N. Z.," was submitted by the author with the frank confession that its length, covering several hundred printed pages of the Transactions of the Institute, would preclude its acceptance for publication in full. But the great value of the original work which it records rendered its rejection on that ground highly undesirable ; and, after correspondence with Dr. Don, it was agreed that the Secretary should condense the paper, subject to the author's approval, omitting what was not essentially connected with the original work reported. In the discharge of this laborious and difficult duty, the Secretary's chief trouble has been his regret to cut out the acute criticisms and admirable theoretical and historical summaries of Dr. Don on the general subject of the science of ore-deposits. It should be added, that the original paper has been returned to the author, with full permission to publish it through any other medium (due mention being made of the first publication by the Institute of portions thereof), and a cordial expression of the hope that the treatise, as a whole, may be thus published, to the advantage of science. The Secretary begs to add, that many of the portions necessarily omitted from this condensed version would constitute, in his judgment, interesting and valuable separate contributions. In attempting to condense this paper, it was necessary at the outset to cut out the tint three chapters, of which the following brief outline is therefore given. Chapter I., introductory in character, indicates the importance of chemical analysis in the investigation of the genesis of ore-deposits, emphasizing the value of Prof. Posepny's Institute paper, and especially of the discussion which it aroused, and stating in general terms the theories of "lateral secretion" and "ascension." Chapter 11. describes the scope of the investigation undertaken by the author, the chief purpose of which was to determine which of the above-named theories was favored by the evidence obtained. This evidence consists chiefly (though not wholly) of analyses of the country-rock taken at various distances from the auriferous "reefs," (a) on deep mine-levels; (b) in the surface or "vadose" region : and also (c) of underlying, neighboring or connected crystallines (granite, gneiss, etc.). In addition to these investigations, there is a separate inquiry into the question of the deposition of gold in marine basins, suggested by the fact that most of the gold in the lodes of Australasia occurs in stratified deposits. Chapter 111. discusses the principles and methods followed by the author in the examination of country-rock for the purpose described. MISCELLANEOUS U.S. 0,029,598 - Extraction of vanadium values from vanadiferous iron oxide ore. A pelletized mixture of ore, limestone and bentonite is roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere to form calcium vanadates, the calcine ground, the ground material leached with aqueous ammonium carbonate or sodium carbonate to produce a vanadium-rich solution while leaving an insoluble residue of calcium carbonate and/or calcium bicarbonate along with undissolved iron values, and the solution separated and treated for its vanadium content. APPROXIMATELY 90 per cent of the steel that is melted and refined in the United States and poured into ingots is made in basic open-hearth furnaces, as shown in Table 1-1. The annual ingot capacity of the steel industry reported January 1,1950, by the American Iron and Steel Institute8* was 99,040,160 tons, of which the basic open-hearth process accounted for 85,896,580 tons, 86.7 per cent of the total. The capacity of the individual furnaces varies over a wide range, a large majority falling within limits of 50 to 200 tons (Fig 1-1). Most of the units constructed [ ] since 1942 are in the larger size groups, between 175 and 225 tons capacity.

DURING the past twenty years, a considerable background of knowledge has been built up on the chemical behavior of oxygen in liquid iron. Little is known regarding oxygen in liquid nickel or the effect of nickel as an alloying element on the behavior of oxygen in liquid steel. The solubility of oxygen in liquid iron was determined by Fetters and Chipman' and, more precisely, by Taylor and Chipman.' The Ni-NiO eutectic was placed by Merica and Waltenberg"' * at 1438°C and 0.24 pct 0, and this point has been confirmed by others." O It was reported by von Bohlen und Halbach and LeitgebelT that nickel and its oxide are miscible in all proportions at 1600°C, but this report is discredited by observations of others. The melting point of NiO according to von Wartenberg and ReuschV s 1990°C. Approximate values of oxygen solubility at several temperatures were reported by Hensel and Sc0tt.O The data of Krupowski and Balickil0 are inconsistent with those of Hensel and Scott and indicate a solubility less than half that found in the present study. For oxygen solubility in Fe-Ni alloys under pure iron oxide-nickel oxide slags, only the scattered data of von Bohlen und Halbach and LeitgebelT are avail- able. The careful work of Bardenheuer and Brauns" involved silica-saturated slags. The equilibrium between Fe-Ni alloys and iron oxide-nickel oxide slags was studied by zur Strassenu and by Jander and Senf,u but no oxygen analyses were reported. Oxygen in Pure Nickel Apparatus and Nlethod: Samples were taken with a "Taylor sampler" from a bath of molten electrolytic nickel held under an air atmosphere in a magnesia-lined 30 lb induction furnace. Saturation of the melt with oxygen was effected partly by the addition of chemically pure black nickel oxide and partly by the air atmosphere. Samples were taken only when there was a clearly visible oxide phase present. To avoid contamination of this oxide phase, the silica-sheathed Pt—Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples, by means of which temperatures were measured, were immersed in the melt for the minimum time consistent with accurate reading. Sodium sulfite as a zinc retarding agent in the selective Hotation of complex lead-zinc sulfide ores was discovered by the writer in the summer of 1919 in the testing laboratory of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co.'s gravity concentrator at Midvalc. Utah. It proved to be the first reagent to give consistently good results in the laboratory on the cornpanj's Bingham ore. In December, 1919, C. A Lemke, concentrator superintendent, recommended that a flotation unit be added to the existing gravity mill to handle the mill slimes, using sodium sulfite as the zinc depressant Owing to the poor lead and zinc markets and the unfavorable royalty schedules offered by the Minerals Separation Co., the project fell through at this time. In 1921, a number of laboratory tests were made at Midvale. on other ores, among them ore from the Sunnyside mine at Eureka, Chlo. Both sodium and calcium sulfites were used with succcss on this ore. Early in 1923, further tests were made at Eureka, shortly after the Sunnyside company had resumed operations after a two-year shutdown. AS a consequence sodium sulfite was given a trial in the mill. The results showcd sufficient improvement over previous work as to warrant continuous use of this reagent in the lead circuit Exeept for a week or so in 1926 and for several weeks in April, 1927, when sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate were given trial runs in this mill. sodium sulfite has been used ever sinee.. Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a 7-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Co. in southeast Utah. The support system allows good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered. Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths. The Radon mine was one of the first American metal mines to use yielding steel props for supporting the relaxed core of the pressure arch which is induced by retreating longwall mining. Full caving was induced. After more than 7 years of stoping experience, the method has proved very satisfactory for the conditions encountered. The mine and method have been described in references listed in the bibliography. U.S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8004 by Wilbert Dare and Philip Lindstrom gives the most information. Stoping experience at this mine indicates that there are many advantages to be gained by using yielding supports; such as in safety, timber cost, roof control, ventilation, ore dilution, and low cost per pound of metal produced. Subsidence measurements show that the surface will rise rather than slump in some areas over the mine. This appears to be an unusual observation and is presented as a new development in subsidence studies. The Radon mine is located 35 miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual premiums were possible by clean mining. Apreliminary investigation has been carried out on the annealing behavior of explosively deformed copper as compared to that of conventionally deformed copper, using hardness, stored energy, and the sharpening of X-ray spots on Debye rings as the measures of annealing. Some metallographic observations were also made. Two purities of copper were studied. The first was tough pitch copper obtained as a small piece from the guard ring of a sample explosively deformed to approximately 500 kbars.* The second consisted of mentedand deformed these samples quite badly so that only a few small fragments were available for the annealing experiments. As a result, little in the way of quantitatively significant data was gleaned from the measurements. However, several important qualitative differences between the annealing of explosively deformed and conventionally deformed copper have been observed. It is these effects which are described in this report. Fig. 1 presents the results of hardness and stored energy measurements during the annealing of the high-purity copper after explosive and after conventional deformation. The data for the conventionally deformed copper were taken from the work of Gordon;' in this copper it is evident that most of the stored energy is released concommittantly with the hardness drop. As shown in orddon's' investigation, these effect:: are definitely associated with recrystal-lization. In the case of the explosively deformed copper, on the other hand, a large fraction of the stored energy is released before any appreciable hardness change takes place. At 160°C about 40 pct, and at 170°C about. 80 pct, of the stored energy appears to have been released prior to the onset of softening, i.e., undoubtedly prior to recrystallization. In view of the facts that the hardness and energy measurements were made on separate samples and that there is reason to suspect that the intensity of the explosive deformation from sample to sample may not have been uniform, a check run was carried out in which both energq release and hardness changes were measured cnn the same sample. The results of this run, shown in Fig. 2, confirm the conclusion that much of the stored energy is released before the hardness begins to change appreciably. In an effort to obtain some idea of the activation energy associated with the early release of energy, a single callorimetric sample was annealed in two steps, first at 149.5"C and then at 159.5"C, Fig. 3.

Definition T. A. Rickard defines flotation' as "the act or state of floating," from the French flottaison, water-line and flotter, to float. The dictionary defines flotation as "the science of floating bodies." The flotation process is a method of concentrating ores by frothing. Weinig and Palmer,2 define flotation as follows: What is the flotation process? Briefly, it consists in the agitation of finely divided ore in water containing bubbles of air or gas, a small amount of oil and, usually, other reagents, soluble and insoluble; under these conditions the small particles of native metals, sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, selenides and tellurides show a tendency to attach themselves to the films of the bubbles, and are thus carried to the surface of the water. The oxidized gangue minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, limestone, hematite, etc., show much less affinity for the bubbles, are easily wetted by the water, and either remain in suspension in the water, or sink to the bottom of the vessel. If the bubbles are sufficiently stable they can be removed, carrying their load of sulfide-mineral particles with them. Thus there can be effected a separation of the two classes of minerals from each other, assuming that the grinding has been sufficient to unlock all of the particles of different composition. The separation does not depend upon differences in specific gravity of the various minerals; in fact, the sulfides are usually heavier than the oxides, and some of the heaviest sulfide minerals are the easiest to float. A particle of mineral may be so large, however, that its weight will counteract its affinity for the film of the bubble. In most cases the ore must be fine enough to pass a screen having at least 48 meshes to the linear inch. Taggart3 defines flotation as follows: Flotation is a method of wet concentration of ores in which separation of mineral from gangue is effected by causing the mineral to float at or above the surface of a body of liquid pulp while the gangue becomes or remains submerged. Briefly, it consists in the agitation of finely divided ore in water containing bubbles of air or gas, a small amount of oil and, usually, other reagents, soluble and insoluble; under these conditions the small parti- cles of native metals, sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, selenides and tellurides show a tendency to attach themselves to the 6lms of the bubbles, and are thus carried to the surface of the water. The oxidized gangue minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, limestone, hematite, etc., show much less affinity for the bubbles, are easily wetted by the water, and either remain in suspension in the water, or sink to the bottom of the vessel. If the bubbles are sufficiently stable they can be removed, carrying their load of sulfide-mineral particles with them. Thus there can be effected a separation of the two classes of minerals from each other, assuming that the grinding has been sufficient to unlock all of the particles of different composition. The separation does not depend upon differences in specific gravity of the various minerals; in fact, the sulfides are usually heavier than the oxides, and some of the heaviest sulfide minerals are the easiest to float. A particle of mineral may be so large, however, that its weight will counteract its affinity for the film of the bubble. In most cases the ore must be fine enough to pass a screen having at least 48 meshes to the linear inch. Shock tubes, either gas or explosively driven, are often used for physical modeling of free field explosions or arena testing. The use of shock tubes often requires less setup time of subjects and smaller driving forces to create pressure versus time waveforms similar to that of arena testing. However, the effects of the shock tube cross sectional geometry on waveform properties is uncertain while free field explosion wave propagation and estimation is well studied.

EL Salvador mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., E subsidiary of Anaconda Co., is in northern Chile about 18 miles north of Potrerillos, 7825 ft above sea level. Initial production is planned for the first half of 1959. Plant capacity will be 30,000 tpd, and there are 308,835,000 tons of proven ore reserves, averaging 1.49 pct Cu. The Inca adit is being driven as part of the mine-to-mill haulageway. Because of the overburden it is planned to mine the deposit by block caving. Ore will be dropped from upper gathering levels through ore passes to the Inca adit, through which it will be transported out of the mine to the primary crushing plant located a half mile from the portal.
