After some decades of lying low and being treated as a second rate fuel, coal is back in the news. Production is rising. Predictions are for an ever expanding use, and they differ only in their rates of increase. Even the FBI is involved in trying to stop fraudulent sales of non-existent coal lands and leases to the innocent. In short, we have a nearly chaotic boom on our hands. Obviously our energy production base is in the process of undergoing a major shift, and the process will present many problems. However, there is little doubt that the industry has the basic strength and organization to be able to deal with the new issues that will arise as a result of these shifts in production and use of coal. After all, it does produce nearly 800 M tpy now, and coal is the single biggest fuel for generation of electricity. This role of coal is illustrated in the table below, which shows the coal equivalent quantities of various fuels used in the production of electricity.

The conventional cyclic system of deep-level mining by drilling and blasting gives rise to an inadequate degree of stope sorting when mining thin reefs. This results in poor utilization of the capital facilities of a mine in the form of shafts, haulages, airways and associated equipment. Continuous and controlled removal of the thin gold-bearing portion of the reefs would permit better stope sorting and hence greater utilization of capital facilities. Results of experiments to develop hard rock cutting machines for mining are reported and the benefits which could be derived from their use are discussed.

United States Steel's Cumberland Coal Operations is located in Greene County in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The mine and related facilities have been in operation since September of 1977. Production from this mine, U. S. Steel's first commercial coal mining venture, will eventually reach a level of 2.72 million mt of clean coal per year and is totally committed to electric power generation. Cumberland is a slope mine in the Pittsburgh seam and is mined by continuous mining machines and longwall. The coal from the mine is trans- ported by belt to the surface, taken through a rotary breaker for initial preparation, and stored in raw coal silos. It is then processed through the preparation plant and taken to a clean coal silo where it is held for train loading. Cumberland Mine operates its am 28.16 km railroad to transport the coal to the Monongahela River. The unit train consists of thirty-one 90 mt cars. The coal, once loaded on barges, is then shipped to the customer. Cumberland Mine is one of the most modern coal preparation and unit train loading systems in the nation. The preparation plant is de- signed to receive coal from the silos at a rate of 720 at per hour. The +6.35 mm material is screened out and cleaned in a Daniels heavy media vessel with two 3.35 m weirs. Minus 6.35 mm material is fed to sixteen #88 Deister concentrating tables. The cleaned coal from this circuit is dewatered, and all effluents from the mechanical dewatering report to the classifying Cyclone sump for classification through ten 35.6 cm cyclones. The cyclones overflow material (-150 mesh) is processed through two banks of three 8.5 m3 Denver D.R. flotation machines. The cyclone underflow pro- duct (28-1 0 mesh) is processed in two banks of 5 six 2.83 m Denver Sub A machines. The clean flotation product is then dewatered in Bird screen bowl centrifuges, blended with the other clean coal size fractions, and the total plant product further dewatered in a thermal dryer.

Studies were made to determine the character and distribution of the copper lost in copper mill tailings. Acid soluble (oxide) and acid insoluble (sulfide) copper were determined for heavy-liquid sink and float products of screen-sized fractions from 12 copper mill tailings. In most of the tailings studied, the coarse-size fractions are higher in copper grade than the respective bulk tailings, high in sulfide copper, and low in oxide copper. Oxide copper occurs predominantly in the minus 325-mesh "slimes." Microscopic examination of heavy-liquid sink products indicated that recovery of liberated copper sulfide minerals is complete in most mills, and that copper minerals not being recovered are locked with gangue particles. Additional copper could probably be recovered from most tailings by size classification, scavenger froth flotation of the coarse fraction, and regrinding of the concentrate to achieve liberation of the locked sulfides.

The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temperature, the composition of the albitizing fuids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters. "Sulphide ores under certain circumstances will react with explosives to generate an autocatalytic chemical reaction. This reaction is exothermic and results in the production of large volumes of poisonous gases and creates an unsafe, unstable condition with the possibility of a low energy deflagration or even a detonation of the loaded hole. This paper outlines the conditions that need to exist for such a reaction to take place and the precautions necessary to minimize or eliminate the problem in areas of reactive ore. A special case study involving a northern Ontario mine will be detailed.IntroductionOne of North America's leading underground gold producer's processes over 6500 tonnes of ore per day from an orebody containing high concentrations of sulphides. After six years of problem free operation, the mine experienced two serious reactions in two months between the sulphides and AMEX II, the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil explosive it uses."

Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

The U.S. underground coal miner faces a continuing hazard from the fall of roof. At the root of many injuries and fatalities are weak or defective roof strata. Throughout mining history, millions of miles of entry have provided exposure of every conceivable geologic roof hazard. This report describes the geologic origin, association, and potential danger from the most common hazards. Discussions of weak rock include drawrock, rider coals, head coal, stackrock, and stream valley effects. Discontinuities, or roof defects, are described including, clay veins, slickensides, joints, and paleochannels. A number of examples from U.S. coalfields are used to document geologic structure and associated hazards. Roof fall analysis is a methodology used by NIOSH for hazard recognition and prevention; its application and benefit to the industry are discussed.

The technical difficulties of cutting thin sections of coal for examination by transmitted light have hitherto restricted the investigation of the important subject of the microstructure of coal to the few possessed of the requisite skill and time. Apart from this, the method fails with anthracites and other coals rich in carbon, owing to the opacity of the material. Occasional use of the method of polishing a surface, with or without etching, has been made, but it was not until Winter' published an account of his results that attention was seriously directed to the method. In May, 1923, a specimen of dull anthracite came into my hands; I tried Winter's method on it and the presence of megaspores and other vegetable structures became clearly visible. A preliminary notice was published by me;2 but I soon abandoned the use of Schulze's solution, having found that a mixture of chromic and sulfuric acids gave far better results. In the meantime Turner and Randall, in America, had independently developed the method of flame etching, as applied to anthracite, with great success. I have spent a year studying the method of chromic etching, which gives excellent results with bituminous coals and camels, as well as with anthracite. For anthracites, I have used the chromic method and Turner's method of flame etching, whichever was the more convenient or as a check one on the other. The polishing is done, according to metallurgical practice, by the use of a polishing machine and successively finer emery paper, followed by polishing on cloth moistened with a suspension of levigated green oxide of chromium, and a final rubbing on "selvyt" (a cotton velvet polishing cloth) moistened with alcohol. The polished sample is examined by reflected light with a 2/3 and 1/6 in. objective. Bituminous coals usually show considerable structure, and even anthracites show it faintly in places. The sample is then etched by immersion in a boiling solution made by adding 10 c.c. of concentrated sulfuric acid to 30 C.C. of a saturated solution of chromic acid; enough water is then added to dissolve

In this investigation, polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar) was coated with various thicknesses of a vapor-deposited silvel- precoat followed by a uapor-deposited zinc using several orders of- magnitude variation in deposition rate of both the silver and zinc. The grain size and resistivity of the zinc film was primarily a function of the silver precoat thickness (in the range of 0.001 to 10 average Agprecoat thickness) and a secondary function of the zinc film thick-ness. The silver and zinc deposition rates were found to have a minor effect on the characteristics of- the zinc film. Electron and X-ray dilffraction results slwwed that all zinc films exhibited a fiber texture mith the (0001) axes essentially perpendiculav to the platze of the film When coating nonmetallic substrates such as paper or plastics with zinc metal vapors, it is found that the zinc will not condense unless extremely high evaporation rates or very low substrate temperatures are used. In 1931, Fraser' reported a procedure whereby zinc could be made to condense on nonmetallic substrates by depositing a very thin precoat of silver. Utilizing Fraser's method, the ermans' developed a commercial process of making "metallized film" capacitors during World War 11. The metallizing process, which was introduced in the United States shortly after the conclusion of World War 11, became one of the first large-scale commercial applications of vapor-deposited metal films and remains one of the larger applications in the electronics industry. The process, as developed by the Germans, consisted of depositing a thin precoat of silver on lacquered, kraft paper followed by a conducting layer of zinc. The resulting silver-zinc film was used as the capacitor The term silver-zinc will be used throughout thiz paper to mean a metal film formed by an extremely thi layer of silver, 10A or less in average thickness, and a zinc film IOOA or more in thickness deposited on the silver film. ---. electrode with the lacquered paper being the dielectric. When polyethylene terephthalate was marketed by E. I. Du Pont Co. in the early 1950's under the trade name Mylar it was substituted for the kraft paper in many capacitor applications. Experiments were performed to determine the effects of mechanical vibrations on ordering in CuAu. The effects of 5, 10, and 15 kc vibrations were investigated over a range of ordering temperatures of 280° to 360°C. A decrease in the rate of ordering was observed at all frequencies and ordering temperatures. THE effects of mechanical vibrations on certain solid-state reactions have been noted by several investigators. In 1930, Mahoux' reported a substantial increase in the case depth of a steel sample nitrided under the influence of mechanical vibrations over that of an unvibrated sample. Similarly, an accelerating effect of vibrations on the diffusion of chromium in steel was noted. Guillet, in the same year, confirmed the results of Mahoux. More recently Schenck and schmidtmann3 studied the effects of low-frequency, alternating loads on the diffusion of carbon in steel. The results of their experiments, conducted at 500 cycles per min and large strain, (0.2 pct), indicated an acceleration of the process. These workers also reported an increase in case depth of a sample vibrated at 430 kc during a carburizing treatment. Effects of high-frequency vibrations on solid-state reactions have also been investigated by Gudzoff and Gavze6 and Fairbanks and Dewez.7 The former reported an acceleration of the age-hardening process in aluminum alloys. The latter noted changes in the structure and mechanical properties of steel annealed under the influence of vibrations. On the other hand, Altenburg4 and Ehringer5 have given some theoretical reasons and experimental evidence as to the improbability of any effect of vibrations on diffusion. Comprehensive surveys of the effects of vibrations on metallurgical reactions are given by Hiedemann' and Bergmann.9 None of the above investigations led to a physical description of the effects of mechanical vibrations on solid-state reactions. In the present study an attempt was made to gain an understanding of the influence of vibrations on nucleation and diffusion. The order-disorder transformation was chosen for investigation since its mechanism has been extensively discussed in the literature. Moreover, the progress of the transformation may be easily followed by observation of electrical resistance changes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The specimens used for the experimental observation of ordering rates were prepared from 50 at. pct Cu-Au alloy wire.* Each specimen consisted of a 0.02-in. diam wire approximately 10 in. long to which two copper potential leads were silver soldered, 2 1/2 in. apart, near one end of the wire. "Two types of metallic deposits have been found in the deep Arctic Ocean: Hydrothermal Fe, Cu, and Zn sulfide deposits form along Gakkel Ridge in the Eurasia Basin and associated ridges between Greenland and Europe; and iron and manganese oxide crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) and nodules, precipitated from seawater onto rock surfaces in the Amerasia Basin, contain many rare metals of economic interest. Fe-Mn crusts and nodules collected in the Amerasia Basin during 2008, 2009, and 2012 cruises on the USCGC icebreaker Healy are characterized by unique mineral and chemical compositions, very high Fe/Mn ratios, fast growth rates, and other unique characteristics compared to those formed elsewhere in the global ocean. These characteristics reflect temporal and spatial variations in geological, oceanographic, and climatic conditions in the Arctic Ocean and surrounding continents over the past ~15 Myr.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSDiscrimination diagrams show that the crusts and nodules found in the Amerasia Basin north of Alaska are hydrogenetic. However, the mineralogy is not typical for hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts and nodules, which usually include only amorphous Fe oxyhydroxide and ?-MnO2 (vernadite). The Arctic samples also include the Mn oxides birnessite and 10Å manganates (todorokite, buserite, asbolane), and the Fe minerals also include goethite, lepidocrocite, feroxyhyte, and ferrihydrite. This mineralogy reflects formation under lower oxygen conditions than typical for samples formed elsewhere.The Amerasia Basin crusts have a unique chemical composition compared with crusts from other areas of the global ocean. The key difference is the high Fe contents relative to Mn contents, which determines the types of trace metals hosted by the Fe-Mn oxide phases, and their concentrations. The high Fe/Mn ratios reflect the expansive continental shelves (>50% of the Arctic Ocean) and upper slopes that support redox cycling and release of Fe and other metals to bottom waters, and to the large fluvial input from North America and Siberia. Brine formation on the shelves and currents promote the distribution of the metals throughout the Amerasia Basin, including the deep basins."

One year ago this month, we in Central Florida witnessed the beginning of a most exciting and glamorous attraction. After three years of construction and anticipation, Walt Disney World opened its gates near Orlando and during its first year of operation received a flood of over 10 million visitors---half of all who came to Florida last year! The side effects of this newest addition to Florida have been phenomenal. Traffic on heavy days has been backed up for 30 miles from the amusement park along a major interstate highway. Hotels and motels have been jammed packed for months, and reservations are still difficult to make. Gasoline stations, restaurants and souvenir shops are doing a booming business. Everywhere you look as you ride the highways of Central Florida you see the signs of growth. New hotels spring up almost overnight. Golf courses galore. New housing projects and apartments sprawl where orange groves used to be. New roads criss-cross areas which were once deserted. There seems to be no end to the steady influx of tourists and new residents to the Sunshine State. And it's mainly because that we are the Sunshine State that they come. Air and water pollution is and has been at a minimum in Florida. Pollution and emissions are fighting words among some groups dedicated to preserving the bountiful environment we share in Florida. Little wonder then that some of these people display concern when they learn that just 50 miles from the entrance to the Magic Kingdom of Disney, phosphate draglines strip away thousands of acres of land each year to extract one of our nation's most precious

The Key Lake nickel-uranium deposits are situated within the Wollaston domain of the Churchill structural province. The host rocks of the two orebodies are of Aphebian and Helikian age. The orebodies occur mainly within a 5.2-km-Iong, northeast-trending zone which coincides with the intersection of the sub-Athabasca unconformity and a reverse fault striking east-northeast. The principal controls of mineralization are structural and lithostratigraphic (i.e., post-Athabasca faults, the sub-Athabasca unconformity and graphitic metapelites in the lower Aphebian, close to the Aphebian/Archean unconformity). Grades of up to 35% U3O8 and 20% Ni are recorded over intervals of up to 2 m. Some hypogene zonation exists and the nickel mineralization tends to underlie the high-grade uranium ore. The ore minerals include pitchblende, a-U307, coffinite, gersdorffite, millerite, niccolite, bravoite, zoisite, sericite, chlorite and kaolinite. The kaolinite is a post-ore, supergene alteration product. Chemical studies of the sub-Athabasca paleo weathering profile sho w that regolithization is characterized by depletion in Si02 and K20 and concomitant enrichment in Al203 and perhaps MgO. In the paleoweathering profile the ferromagnes ian minerals are chloritized, the Ksfeldspars sericitized and the plagioclase saussuritized. Preliminary geochronologic data from the ores reveal U/Pb ages of -1228 my, - 960 my and 89 my, and Rb /Sr data indicate basement ages of -1850 my and - 1372 my. Aphebian pelitic protoliths, carrying U and Ni, may have released some metals during post-Hudsonian weathering, and minor concentration in structural and geochemical traps may have taken place prior to the deposition of the Athabasca strata. However, it is felt that the bulk ofthe ore-grade mineralization wasgenerated after the deposition of the Athabasca formation and after faulting, probably during a major regional thermal/ intrusive episode of Grenvillian age. Several episodes of remobilization took place between 1228and 89 my ago.

"Bridge abutments supported on pile foundations are often constructed over weak and compressible soils. The consolidation settlements induced by the embankment loads are known to result in downdrag and lateral forces on the piles supporting the bridge abutments. The performance of a pile group including inclined piles embedded in consolidating soils was investigated numerically considering surcharge loads from approach embankment construction. A two-dimensional numerical model was constructed using commercial finite element software PLAXIS and calibrated against field measurements of the abutment movements observed on Brookdale Avenue Underpass Structure located on the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway in Ontario between Cornwall and the Quebec border. The soft soil model (SSM) was used to simulate the constitutive behavior of the compressible soil deposit. The SSM model parameters were determined based on the laboratory tests. Subsequently, time dependant development of downdrag effects was comparatively evaluated for vertical and inclined single piles as well as a pile group that included both vertical and inclined piles.Results showed that drag loads increased with the consolidation time. However, majority of accumulation of drag loads took place within first 120 days after installation of piles. The results also indicated that the shear forces and bending moments are controlled by the lateral spreading of foundation soil and their accumulation is proportional to consolidation time. The large axial strains caused by large downdrag forces are considered to have yielded the piles and this is a possible reason for unusual abutment movements. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to researchers and practitioners.1. IntroductionDeep foundation units are widely used for supporting bridge piers and abutments, where weaker surficial soils preclude shallow foundations. Particularly in Ontario, semi-integral and integral abutment bridges are typically supported on end-bearing steel driven piles. The construction of approach embankments over weaker, compressible soils results in significant vertical and lateral soil movements, which induce additional loads on piles supporting the abutments. In order to minimize such effects, preloading and surcharging are commonly employed approaches to avoid unanticipated settlements prior to the installation of piles. Other alternatives such as aggregate pier supported approach embankment are also being studied as the schedule restrictions imposed by preloading and surcharging becomes cost prohibitive (Turan et al. 2012)."

In the present work, the viscosities of molten FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 semi-synthetic slags for nickel flash smelting were measured in the temperature range from 1473 to 1723K by a rotational viscometer. The ratio of Fe to Si02 was fixed at 1.2, calcium and magnesium oxide contents varied in the range from 2 to 8 mass% and 9 to 12 mass%, respectively. The results showed that silicate anions became smaller by increasing CaO content, which results in a decrease of the viscosity of the slag. In the case of MgO addition the viscosity behavior was complicated. At MgO content below II mass%, the viscosity increased with the increase of MgO at all temperatures tested. However, when the MgO content was above II mass%, the viscosity decreased slightly for FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 system. At higher MgO contents, low-viscosity slags can be obtained by adding CaO. At a given composition, .the viscosity decreased with increasing temperature. The higher the temperature, the more MgO can be added before saturation. The effect of Fe3O4 on the viscosity was quite significant. The viscosity of slag increased by 300mPa-s at 1573K when Fe3O4 content varied from 3 to 9 mass%. The viscosity values are presented as the functions of temperature and composition. A comparison between FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 systems is given in this study.

Durante varios años se ha utilizado los extractos de quebracho como depresores y dispersantes en los procesos mineros. Empero, existe una nueva forma familia de extractos de quebracho modificados que pueden ser aplicados en los procesos de flotación. Estos reactivos orgánicos naturales, extraídos del quebracho, se aplican en bajos consumos y por tratarse de productos de origen natural, se presentan como una alternativa limpia en relación a los reactivos tradicionales. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala la utilización de diferentes extractos de quebracho modificados, dispersantes y depresores, en los ensayos de flotación de sulfuros y también en minerales no metalíferos, donde su aplicación no solo permite mejorar la selectividad, sino mejorar la recuperación de los minerales valiosos.

In a modern economy there is a compelling case why governments should not own property rights to mineral deposits. Assuming they do, however, governments will use these constitutional rights to raise revenue. They have two basic instruments to achieve this; a royalty charge on price or a rent tax on income/profits. On the one hand, a royalty charge creates a 'deadweight loss' to society by increasing cut-off grades and decreasing the life-of-mine. They are also regressive. However, they are easy to administer. On the other hand, a rent tax avoids the problem of 'deadweight loss'; it does not impact on the life-of-mine because the tax structure is neutral. But, they are difficult to administer correctly, particularly in the determination of rents and the definition of mining per se. If rents are incorrectly determined capital markets are distorted. And, if mining activities are incorrectly defined, downstream activities could be adversely affected.
