In the mining of coal the trend is toward more and more mechanization. This increased use of machinery to replace hand labor is assuming many new forms and presents a constantly changing aspect. Safety engineers must be alert if the many electrical problems resulting from these new installations are to be handled safely. Some of these problems present possible electrical hazards that may be overlooked by the safety engineer unless they are called to his attention by one who has made a special study of the conditions. The foregoing is especially true of conveyor systems of mining. The terms "conveyor systems" and "conveyor mining" as used in this paper refer to those systems in which various types of conveyors are employed to transport coal away from the working place. In some mines this means complete elimination of track, cars, and locomotives. In others it means that conveyors take the coal from the working place to a convenient loading point, from which transportation is completed by cars and locomotives.

Power is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 331/3 Per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches.

"INTRODUCTION Background Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) has been a critical issue during the last decade in underground mines. This problem is threatening the health of mine workers, as well as the mine’s productivity. It has been confirmed that the diesel engine exhaust is the main source for the diesel particulate matter (DPM), and that it has the highest impact in raising carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxide of nitrogen, and hydrocarbons in the underground environment. Miners who are exposed to this kind of emission are at high risk for developing lung cancer and other lung diseases. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued standard rules to regulate diesel emissions in underground mines. The final ruling confirmed in 2008 that the total carbon should not exceed 160 µg/m3. (MISHA, 2008) Monitoring DPM in underground mines has become important to ensure compliance with the MSHA regulations. There are many different types of DPM monitoring systems that are currently being used in underground mines. Two methods are typically used for DPM sampling: the personal sampling method or the direct exhaust sampling method, which takes a direct sample from the engine’s tailpipe. Many mines do not recommend using the direct exhaust sampling method since it involves complex measuring equipment and procedures, as well as it is not regulated in the United States or Canada. Thus, the personal sampling method is the preferred method in many mines when taking DPM samples. Even this method includes many variations, such as the Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) method and the method devolved by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety NIOSH 5040. The NIOSH 5040 method is the preferred method overall because it gives more accurate measurements compared to the other methods. This method does not allow organic carbon sources other than those coming from diesel engine exhausts to interfere with the measurements, which otherwise would lead to overestimating the actual amount of the DPM in the mine environment. An impactor feature in the cassette, which holds the samples in the instrument, characterizes this method. Since the diesel particles are less than 0.9 micron, this impactor does not allow particles more than 0.9 microns to be collected in the cassette filter. The cassette is then analyzed in a lab and the concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and total carbon (TC) are determined. Lately, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new instrument that can use the same concept of NIOSH 5040, but with instant measurements of elemental carbon. It utilizes laser radiation with the cassette so it can give a real time measurement. The real time measurements give instant information about the underground environment that will allow the mining engineer to take immediate action and enact plans instead of waiting for results from the laboratories where NIOSH 5040 method may take several weeks to get the measurements."

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of Project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the Project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, developing geostatistical reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mecha¬nics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

"Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F) to a high of 13.6 °C (56.4 °F), while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5° to about -1.5 °C (31 ° to 29 °F). The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary.Modeling objectivesThe successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. At various stages during the hot rolling process, the different rolled products – blooms, billets, bars, respectively sections, but also slabs or plates – need to be cut. While the cross sections of these products are being reduced during each rolling pass, the lengths are being increased accordingly. Thus, it becomes necessary to cut the products to shorter lengths suitable for the next steps of production by state-of-the-art designed dry abrasive cut-off machines.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo observar o percentual de transformação das fases (romboédrica e hexagonal), após tratamento termobárico do hidrocarboneto aromático Antraceno. As amostras foram tratadas sob pressão fixada em 4,5GPa e temperatura variando entre 900 e 1300°C, com o intuito de obter estruturas grafíticas. O percentual de fases foi obtido a partir de dados de difração de Raios X e através de refinamento pelo método de Rietveld, sendo que na temperatura de 1300°C foi possível observar um aumento na fase romboédrica e melhores parâmetros de refinamento. Pode-se concluir que o Antraceno ao ser submetido a altas temperaturas e alta pressão torna possível o aumento da fase romboédrica do material grafítico, o que resulta em melhores condições de síntese do diamante.

To recover tetrahedrite-tennantite series minerals from porphyry copper-pyrite ores by the froth flotation method, further research on thiol collectors is launched to promote the utilization efficiency of copper ores. In the present paper the adsorption mechanism of the collectors on tennantite surface has been investigated by computational modeling and FTIR-spectroscopic analysis, which have revealed that the decrease in prognosis of collector activity evaluation (PCAE) for tennantite is in the following order: BX (-0.34318), AEROPHINE 3418A (- 0.61756), AERO 5100 (-14.18857). The lower PCAE the stronger the ability of the collector to interact with the mineral surface of tennantite and form the stable complex. More kinetic reliable conditions to form suitable adsorption layer and rupture of the liquid interlayer with AERO 5100 have been observed by FTIR spectra due to decrease of the intensity and stretching and bending vibrations of water (less than 20 and 65%, respectively). In order to verify the feasibility of AERO 5100 as a collector the industrial flotation tests have been conducted. Flotation performance has improved significantly with the stadially grinding and preflotation of tennantite in intercycle copper flotation that allows to avoid desliming of the fragile mineral and minimize loss of Cu and As in tailings. The recovery of copper in copper concentrate increases by 3.9% with the grade maintained.

The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. A diffusion mass transport model for predicting the microsegregation in a solidifying and coarsening dendritic mushy region of a binary alloy is presented. Two versions of this model are tested; one based on expressing the solute concentration in terms of mole fraction and the other on expressing the solute concentration in terms of mass fraction. On comparing previous model data sets and conditions, used in the analysis of Aluminum-Copper systems, a number of inconsistencies emerge. These inconsistencies are resolved on identifying a single set of data and conditions which take account of compositional density changes, "non-linear" thermodynamics and dynamic coarsening. An additional investigation is carried out to study the effect of assumed cooling mechanisms.

"In order to study the support effect of concrete in the surrounding rock of a metal mine, the concrete and surrounding rock were comparatively studied. Firstly, the general situation of the ultra-kilometer deep shaft in Xincheng, surrounding rock and geological conditions are introduced. Secondly, the experimental scheme of material mechanical properties of surrounding rock and shaft lining concrete based on same standard dimension and shape are examined, and the mechanical tests of rock and concrete based on different shapes and sizes are carried out. The study shows that the compressive strength value and elastic modulus of the rock cube are 1.28 times and 1.78 times that of the cylinder, and the Poisson's ratio is 0.77 times. The dimensional effect law of the concrete cube and cylinder test data is consistent with the rock law. However, the test results of the concrete are less discrete than the rock; the test also shows that the strength and elastic modulus of the concrete lining of the main shaft of the Xincheng are much smaller than the surrounding rock that is also used as the concrete aggregate, which indicates that the support of concrete lining in the surrounding rock shaft behaved weakly. Based on the development of the modern NATM rock support theory, it is suggested that the mechanical test standard of artificial support materials should be unified into the mechanics test standard of natural rock, which will help to improve the accuracy and practicality of scientific calculation of geotechnical engineering.INTRODUCTIONConcrete and rock mass are usually attributed to a class of materials called frictional materials or geotechnical materials, of these two kinds of materials, the first is man-maded and the second is natural. The attentive scholar can find that there are many differences in the test criteria for the mechanical properties of the two kinds of materials among different industries or departments, reflecting the differences in their sources, tradition, and the application thoery of material strength among them.There is a situation wordwide, that there are many testing standards of the same material mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus, compressive strength, etc. The cube with a side length of 150 mm is adopted as a common sample in the architecture department in China, while a cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm and a height of 100 mm is as a standard specimen in geotechnical department.Knowing that mechanical parameter values are strongly affected by the the size, shape of specimen and loading rate etc, that is to say the mechanical parameter values of the same material are completely different when obtained from different test with different standards. However, such a problem has been long neglected in geotechnical engineering."

"Several studies on the bulk density of coals prepared for byproduct-oven use were undertaken during the war by the Bureau of lanes in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee. The primary purpose of these studies was either to produce more uniform coke or to increase the throughput of existing facilities or both; the goal was increased Production of steel for war. As these studies were made, detailed reports were sent to the individual companies with whom the Bureau cooperated; also two reports,5/6/on the general subject of bulk-density control were published. In the course of the work, data were gathered that now prove of value in judging the merit of carious methods of testing bulk density and the limits of application of each method in byproduct-oven operations.Since the cessation of hostilities, the .Bureau section (Coke Production Survey Section) that conducted this work has been liquidated, but it was felt advisable to prepare a report on the accumulated experience so that it would be in a form available for the use of the industry and also as a base for any further research on the control of fluctuating bulk densities in coke ovens.It is hoped that the data and experiences recorded herein will be of material assistance to the many who have had difficulty in obtaining reproducible results in bulk-density testing. Since the data were gathered in the course of extending aid to individual plants in minimizing the deleterious effects of fluctuations in bulk density of oven charges on the quality and quantity of coke produced, certain desirable phases of an over-all investigation were not covered. However, on certain of these phases qualitative indications are available and the policy followed herein is that suggested by the American Society for Testing Materials Manual on Presentation of Data7/ that lacking quantitative information, relevant material should be included even though it ""may be qualitative in character, some may even be vague."""

The high production rates achieved from mass mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving and longwall mining require large conveyor belts, trucking loops (diesel/electrical) and rail systems for ore handling. However, the ore handling systems used in mass mines introduce a significant amount of heat into the overall ventilation system, which may be problematic at depth or in mines located in hot climates.In particular, the heat load from a conveyor system is not always well understood and consists of various components, including frictional heat from idlers, heat from electrical motors, heat from the drive train and heat from broken rock transported on the conveyor system. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the heat introduced to the ventilation air from a large conveyor system. The conveyor system transports ore with a maximum virgin rock temperature of 41°C from a depth of over 1 km. High strength AA7068 (Al - 7.88 wt.% Zn - 2.68 wt.% Mg - 2.07 wt.% Cu) aluminum alloy strip was successfully fabricated by horizontal-type twin roll casting. A simulation technique was used to obtain the range of casting conditions for fabricating strip without defects. The cast strip with thickness of about 5 mm was hot rolled, intermediate annealed, cold rolled to final thickness and subsequently annealed at various temperatures. Tensile properties of annealed and the aged specimens were evaluated at ambient temperature. Tensile strength and elongation of the annealed sheet are about 365 MPa and 28%, respectively. Also, the tensile and yield strength after the aging at paint baking condition (180 °C x 0.5 h) are 586 MPa and 551 MPa, respectively. Therefore, it is expected to show good formability prior to press or stamping and also provide high dent resistance after paint baking treatment.

ELECTROSTATIC methods are used to separate and concentrate or purify granular particles derived from ores or various synthetic and agricultural products. Compared with other separation methods that require many technological refinements, the electrostatic attraction of fibers, grass, and seeds to charged surfaces clan be accomplished under the most primitive circumstances, and the early development of this method of beneficiation seemed very promising. Precise application of the method to provide high selectivity, however, is a complex procedure, and interest in this method declined. During this period Mr. O. C. Ralston initiated a Bureau of Mines research program oil electrostatic separation. It is the purpose of thins publication to describe the development of the electrostatic method of particle separation from the early beginning to the present resurgence of interest. Most of the information for this description bas been derived from references, a few of which were not available for thorough review. Much information has been drawn from the investitions of the Bureau. Acknowledgments Mr. O. C. Ralston, former Chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, began the research program on the subject and did research on the mils literature. Both Mr. Ralston and Mr. H. B. Johnson, former president of the Huff Electrostatic Separator Co., furnished patent references. A critical review by Mr. F. D. Lamb, Research director, and Mr. M. J. Spendlove, Supervisory metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, College Park Metallurgy Research Center, lifts been of much value in preparing this report.

"Since the beginning of the petroleum industry in 1839, up to within two or three years ago, these has been a dearch of engineers who have had the fundamental technical training also sufficient practical experience so that they could compete with practical men. Need for Technical Investigations in Industry: As in the early stages of the mining industry, the petroleum industry has been rather slow in realizing the need for technical assistance and investigators in the development and production of oil lands. The rapid increase in consumption, however, during the past few years has accentuated this need more than anything else could have done. When it is realized that our production cannot longer keep pace with the demand, it is easily understood why it is imperative that be instituted which will tend to conserve and prolong the supply of oil from the fields now known. It is interesting to note from preliminary production figure given cut by the U. S. Geological Survey, for the year 1919, that the United States produced about 430,000,000 barrels, an increase of 22,000,000 or 6 per cent over 1918 production and also there was imported, chiefly from Mexico, a little over 52,000,000 barrels, making a total of 430,000,000 barrels, to satisfy the trade demand in the United States of which almost 6,000,000 barrels was exported. Stocks were not materially increased.Other significant facts regarding our petroleum industry, are that just recently the U. S. Shipping Board in soliciting bids for 24,000,000 barrels of fad oil to meet prospective needs, received bids for only 1,500,000 barrels at prizes ranging from 75 to 90 per cent higher than was paid last year. One large company on the Pacific Coast has stopped its export trade, and has notified consumers,of gas-engine distillate that they will no longer make deliveries of this product. This will materially affect the farmer, in many instances, through his use of the truck and tractor."

The recovery of natural gas (primarily methane) from coalbed deposits is an established and growing source for the U.S and accounts for over 7% of its total production. The gas from on-purpose degassing is often pipeline quality and requires only compression and dehydration before being admitted to the pipeline grid. However, the raw gas is sometimes contaminated with nitrogen (N2) and/or carbon dioxide (CO2) that can make the gas inadmissible to the transportation pipeline. In general, the N2 must be 4% or less and the CO2 should be 2% or less. In treating gas produced from virgin coal bed or from degassing operations where CO2 is present, amine systems are traditionally used for its removal. Engelhard’s Molecular Gate® adsorption system offers an attractive alternative due to its skid-mounted equipment, low pressure and unattended operation, cost and high on-stream reliability. Natural gas can also be sourced from the residual coal, after the coal has been mined. This source can be the GOB or gas remaining in abandoned coal mines. This source is almost universally contaminated, often with a combination of CO2 and N2. If the source is from air intrusion, the source can also be contaminated with O2. In treating CO2 / N2 contaminated feeds, the Molecular Gate adsorption system removes both of the impurities along with a level of O2 within a single processing step. To date, ten Molecular Gate units are underway with three systems having been installed for upgrading gas from abandoned coal mines. The technology consists of specialty adsorbents and advanced PSA processes that are jointly offered as fabricated packaged equipment by Engelhard Corporation and Guild Associates, Inc. Upgrading requirements, project challenges and project arrangements are discussed in this paper.

This paper presents an assessment of the Robertson (2010a) method within the CPTu inversion parameter framework of Been et al. (1987), using CPTu calibration chamber data presented by Jefferies and Been (2015) and in other literature to assess the validity of the method, with particular focus on applicability of the method to TSFs (i.e. its applicability to loose silts and silty sands). The assessment demonstrates that although the method estimates values of k consistent with calibration chamber data, the method estimates values of m that are generally 1.5 to 2 times greater than calibration chamber data. As a result of this, the method generally overestimates Ψ for values of Ψ less than 0, and underestimates Ψ for values of Ψ greater than 0. This may result in both overly conservative assessment of materials as potentially liquefiable and unconservative predictions of material behaviour for loose materials.
