"Previously, in 2013, a laboratory version of the computer code ARMPS-LAM, introduced at the 32""d International Conference of Ground Control in Mining, successfully integrated the laminated overburden model of LaModel into an ARMPS-style pillar stability analysis. The ARMPS-LAM analysis has now been fully integrated into the ARMPS program allowing users to more accurately classify the stability of a given mine design utilizing a laminated overburden model for the determination of pillar loading within theAMZ. ,This paper introduces the new Windows-based ARMPS-LAM program. The program's ease of use, output result generation, and limitations are highlighted through the parametric analysis of three hypothetical case studies where traditional ARMPS output is compared to output generated by LaModel. As mining operations continue to produce at greater depths and in more complex geometric and geological conditions, flexible and efficient analyses of mine stability for underground room and pillar mining has become more and more essential. The ARMPS-LAM program provides the mining industry with an empirically backed, numerical design tool for the evaluation of underground room and pillar mine plans.INTRODUCTIONIn the Southern Appalachian coal fields of the United States, retreat room-and-pillar methods have allowed mining operations to maintain high rates of production in the face of adverse geologic conditions and shrinking coal reserves. Over the years, research has been dedicated to understanding and mitigating mining-related dangers due to second mining practices, such as: pillar squeezes, floor heave, roof falls, pillar bumps, etc. However, as mining operations continue at deeper depths and with more complex geometric and geologic conditions, there is an inherent industry need for more accurate, flexible, and faster evaluations of stability for underground room-and-pillar mining."

With the difficult economic challenges currently facing the steel industry, it is essential to perform a complete analysis when determining which rolls to purchase. A properly designed “Total Cost of Ownership” model can result in significant savings. This paper will review the costs associated with rolls in both Hot Strip and Cold Strip Mills. The multitude of factors that must be considered in performing a complete analysis for the roll purchasing process will be discussed. Models for both Hot Strip and Cold Mills will be presented. Examples where traditional analysis can lead to expensive, incorrect decisions will be presented.

The blast -hole method for drilling and breaking ground is not new to the mining industry . For several years it has been used rather extensively in Canada , particularly in the gold mines , where it was first developed and where the major advances in the technique as applied to present - day mining problems have been made . At present , 40 mines in Canada and the United States are using the method in one form or another , and from all indications its use will increase in the future . In two California mines , blast -hole diamond drilling is now used for a part of or for all stoping operations , and in one of these it is used to some extent in development work . At the Mountain Copper Co.'s Hornet mine in Shasta County, about 50 percent of the pyritic sulfide ore produced is mined by the blast - hole method , and the U. S. Vanadium Corp. mines 80 percent of the ore produced at its Pine Creek tungsten mine in Inyo County by this method . At Pine Creek , long -hole drilling and blasting is used for mining pillars also , and in pre - stoping development . The blast -hole diamond - drilling method is not applicable to all types of ore bodies . A third property in California , the El Dorado Limestone Company , El Dorado County, tried the method for several months in 1943 and 1944 , but , owing to certain factors that greatly increased mining cost , the company soon returned to conventional mining methods .

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF hatching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid hatching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically rccmer isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread, and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than 0.6 m (2 ft) thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disk filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disk filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some dif¬ficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compounded after rains. The experimental program described in this paper tested the following methods of improving the load-bearing properties of coal refuse: moisture reduction, addition of crushed coarse refuse, addition of fly ash, addition of lime, and addition of a mixture of lime and fly ash. In terms of a balance between economic and technical considerations, the most effective method was demonstrated by laboratory and plant tests to be a 2% to 5% addition of lime. Test Program During formulation of a test program aimed at improving coal refuse stability, a number of treatment techniques were selected for evaluation of their effect on refuse load-bearing characteristics. The reduction of refuse moisture was the first technique considered, since moisture content plays a key role in the bearing strength of a bulk solid. The reasoning was that a very small reduction in refuse moisture, provided it could be accomplished with minimal effort and cost, would be sufficient for eliminating refuse disposal problems most of the time. At the same time, it was recognized that periods of rainy weather would offset moisture-reduction measures. Other techniques selected for evaluation because of their potential for improving refuse-bearing strength at reasonable cost were: addition of crushed coarse refuse, the addition of fly ash, and the addition of lime. A simple one-dimensional laboratory compaction test was designed for evaluating the effect of each of these techniques on refuse-bearing strength. Those techniques that gave best results in the laboratory would then be tested in the preparation plant in West Virginia. Laboratory Tests The laboratory test for evaluating each of the techniques involved the application of weight to a load module placed on a refuse sample in a container. The distance the load module sank with an increasing amount of applied weight was measured, and the relationship between module displacement and loading was obtained. The refuse container was large enough to minimize the influence of wall effects, and to decrease the effect of the container bottom, a test was terminated when the load module sank to about three fourths the depth of the container. Initially, an attempt was made to conduct compaction experiments with samples of total plant refuse. However, the presence of + 0.13 m (+ 5 in.) material in the refuse interfered with the mechanics of the test, and the large amount of material required for a representative sample made testing extremely tedious and time-consuming. To avoid this problem and because it was believed that only the fine components of the refuse were the major cause of the stability problem, tests were conducted with 13 mm X 0 (1/2 in. X 0) material from the total plant refuse. The equipment consisted of a 0.46 m (18 in.) cubic container, a loading module with 62 cm2 loading area, weights totaling 450 kg, and a portable concrete mixer for combining water and additives with the refuse. Refuse samples of about 110 kg dry weight were used for each test. Experimental compaction test data were evaluated by plotting the linear displacement of the load module vs. loading. The 2 Moz Vogue mineral resource is a recent discovery at the Sunrise Dam gold mine (SDGM), lying approximately 600 m vertically below the Sunrise Dam open pit. Unlike most other lodes, which are dominated either by steep vein sets or shallow high-strain (shear) zones, it lies broadly in the hinge of a folded felsic porphyry body, where it cuts intermediate volcanic lavas and volcaniclastic rocks and is not specifically concentrated at a lithofacies contact. The mineralisation is controlled by a complex interplay of moderate to shallow, west-dipping high-strain zones that are transected by irregular and discontinuous high-grade, north-west-, north–south- and east–west-trending breccia sheets that initially caused problems with attempts to model broad domains. However, by combining the structural controls and styles with the distribution of gold, arsenic, sulfur and antimony, we have improved opportunities for scheduling, extracting and processing the most appropriate material considering the current mining and processing constraints.The early delineation process for the Vogue lode revealed a significant mineral resource for the SDGM, coupled with the recognition of some potentially difficult downstream implications for mining and processing. The ultimate success of mining at Vogue will be a consequence of combining standardised data collection and geological modelling techniques with the results of the novel innovative techniques applied at an early stage of the project.Innovation (in the truest sense) drives change and application to deliver efficient and effective outcomes. Initial data generation and interpretation in lodes above Vogue provided a sound geological model based on strong structural foundations, leading to ideas that could be tested and validated by stress inversion analysis and modelling simulations. Geomechanical modelling simulations, based on the structural analysis, then provided an insight into both the structural and fluid evolution of the system and highlighted target areas. This promoted support for deeper drilling and sampling, which lead to the discovery of Vogue.With additional data, the structural model for Vogue was re-engineered through combination with geochemical and hyperspectral analysis and detailed geological and geostatistical domaining. Initial poor results from metallurgical tests from a small batch sample refocused efforts to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation and profiling (geometallurgy) and combine this data with the composite geological-structural-geochemical model. The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator has an extensive history of reagent trials, with different reagents coming in and out of favour over the years. The research and use of carbon depressants is particularly prevalent, as carbonaceous pyrite is a major source of concentrate dilution. Years of research led to the use of naphthalene sulphonate due to its excellent carbon depression properties. However, due to rising reagent costs carbon depression ceased in the late 1990s. This led to the loss of knowledge about the use and value of naphthalene sulphonate. Cyanide is used at the Copper Concentrator for the sole purpose of pyrite depression and over the years multiple projects have been devoted to finding alternatives to it. In 2012 the neighbouring MIM Lead-Zinc Concentrator replaced cyanide with naphthalene sulphonate which resulted in cost savings and the elimination of a hazardous reagent. In 2013, plant trials were conducted at the Copper Concentrator in hopes to replicate the outcomes obtained at the Lead-Zinc Concentrator. The results of the trials conducted at the Copper Concentrator showed that naphthalene sulphonate could not replace cyanide and this work was set aside to pursue more promising projects. Further research conducted in 2014 found that mineralogy and a better understanding of the depressing mechanism of naphthalene sulphonate held the key to improved pyrite depression at the Copper Concentrator. The findings showed that Mount Isa copper ore contains two forms of pyrite; euhedral pyrite (cubic pyrite) and framboidal pyrite (carbon rimmed spheres of pyrite), both of which require different reagents to sufficiently depress them. Naphthalene sulphonate was found to be an excellent carbon depressant, suitable for depressing graphite and framboidal pyrite, whilst cyanide specifically targets euhedral pyrite.In 2015 laboratory test work was conducted to examine the use of naphthalene sulphonate in conjunction with cyanide to selectively target both forms of pyrite. This work led to a full plant trial, the results of which showed a significant increase in plant performance, with higher copper concentrate grades and recoveries being achieved. The stabilities of rehabilitated landforms are often threatened by the altered surface hydrology, especially the excessive surface run-off, which may cause severe water erosion and associated pollutant transport to surrounding areas. These effects would lead to pollution in waterways and render the failure of newly established vegetation. An accurate quantitative evaluation of run-off problems are consequently essential for the proper rehabilitation designs which can help minimise these harmful consequences. For this purpose, in this study a novel run-off model, RunCA, was developed based on Cellular Automata (CA), integrating fundamental hydraulic principles. In this model, a series of rectangular cells were employed to cover the study area. Run-off production within each cell was simulated by determining the cell state (water surface elevation) that consists of both cell altitude and water depth. The distribution of water flow among cells was determined by applying CA transition rules based on the improved minimisation-of-difference algorithm and the calculated flow travelling time. RunCA was applied to various aspects in mined land rehabilitation planning, including landform designs for both hill-slopes and tailings dams, revegetation strategies and cover constructions. Simulation results showed that surface run-off increased with slope gradient and more run-off was produced on convex and straight slopes than on concave and S-shape slopes. Both mounds and rip lines constructed on the tailings dam surface could help reduce the water discharge. Vegetation planted in rows were more effective than those in columns or patches in controlling run-off. Increased cover thickness had the potential in reducing run-off rates, and the covers with an increasing thickness from top to bottom of the slope tended to be more efficient than those with a constant thickness. All these results have demonstrated the efficacy of RunCA as a simulation tool in assessing the hydrologic behaviours of different rehabilitation designs. The unprecedented demand for capital investment in the mining industry today has intensified management's interest in every known technique which will help to reduce operating costs and increase production. One proven approach leading to the accomplishment of this objective is well known in the mining industry and is gaining added prestige, particularly where keen competitive conditions exist. This approach is in the area of incentives applied to mining productivity. An investigation of many incentive plans now in use throughout the mining industry revealed a predominant number of conventional type plans, Most of these plans are designed to reward the hourly-paid employee on the basis of percent over and above a standard hourly or daily ton rate, By contrast, this search failed to divulge any incentive plan solely and independently developed for production management employees. This does not mean that such plans in the mining industry are nonexistnet, but it does indicate that production management incentive systems are scarce or are being kept under wraps.

The iron industry produces a considerable amount of tailings per annum, due to its substantial volumes of production. The actual iron ore processing routes require the removal of slimes fractions. In addition to iron oxides and quartz, the iron ore slimes are generally composed of other minerals such as kaolinite and finely dispersed iron hydroxides which impact significantly the performance of reverse cationic flotation. In this study, we propose a two stage processing route that would allow further beneficiation of iron slimes which are not successfully beneficiated, avoiding their disposal as waste. The new amidoamine reagent was tested as a collector in a two-stage route to process two samples of iron ore slimes with d50 close to 10 μm and with high kaolinite content (13 to 20 per cent). The results showed that it was possible to obtain iron concentrate with 66.5 per cent iron and 48.4 per cent mass recovery for a feed containing 48.9 per cent Fe associated with hematite (39 per cent) and goethite (32 per cent). The collector efficiency was improved by mixing with frother for the slimes with higher goethite content of 55 per cent: the concentrate grade was increased from 58.8 per cent to 64.5 per cent with addition of the frother at the expense of reducing operation metallurgical recovery from 87.8 per cent to 75.6 per cent. The efficiency of the process was improved by applying an external energy impact to disperse the fine particles and clean the surface of the minerals. The new amidoamine collector does not require a depressor such as corn starch and may provide the development of new concentration routes for complex ultrafine iron ores. The combination of the amidoamine-based flotation at first stage with high intensity magnetic separation allowed development of optimised two-stage processing routes to valorise the iron ore slimes rejected to the tailings in the actual flotation plant.

As we enter the new century and close out the old, it has become standard procedure for most blasters to complete a blasting log or shot report following a blast. However, how can you be sure these completed blasting logs are worth the paper or electronic space they occupy.3 Is the recorded data accurate and meaningful? Will the blasting logs stand up under investigation? This paper will attempt to define the purpose of a blasting log, illustrate common mistakes, discuss potential problems, and indicate steps that a company or individual blaster can take to improve and protect against costly errors. The end result will be a reminder of the importance of accurate documentation following a blast that must be given the same individual effort as went into the blasting itself. This paper will also attempt to achieve a proactive training resource to improve the use of blasting logs. A completed blasting log is, quite possibly, the only witness to the overall credibility of the work of the responsible blaster. The log may remain perpetually silent, only to end up in a file that is moved progressively with time to various levels of long-term storage. But, will this silent witness be ready to speak out should a concern arise from the blasting ? Will the blasting log communicate with authority and credibility, or will it be ridiculed by investigation and silenced in shame with costly adverse results for the blaster and company? It is not enough to simply complete a blasting log. The information it contains must be accurate enough to stand the test of time and arduous scrutiny. Unfortunately, most blasters and their associated blasting companies do not realize the status of the silent witness until it is too late.

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines has shown that autoclave cyanide leaching of used automobile exhaust catalysts for recovery of platinum-group metals (PGM) is technically feasible. The purpose of this work was to investigate the chemistry of the dissolution of PGM in cyanide solutions in more detail. Where possible, samples of pure, elemental PGM powders or foils were used instead of automobile exhaust catalysts, because of their greater purity. Ultraviolet spectra revealed that Pt and Pd were solubilized as the square planar tetracyanometallate (II) complexes, while Rh was solubilized as the octahedral hexacyanorhodate (III) complex. This explained the poor recovery of Rh from solution by carbon adsorption, solvent extraction, and ion exchange observed in earlier research, because of the higher anionic charge and size of the octahedral complex. Leaching rate studies showed that the rate of solubilization was greatest for Pd, followed by Pt and Rh. Although the rate of chemical reaction was the controlling step for the dissolution of elemental Pt and Rh samples, the rate of pore diffusion was rate limiting for PGM in catalyst samples.

The current status and history of innovation in magnetic methods of material treatment are reviewed. The milestones and key drivers of innovation in magnetic separation are identified, advantages of this technology in comparison to other physical methods of material manipulation are discussed and reasons for its failure to live up to its potential and expectations are indicated. Derailers that were responsible for the implementation failures are identified. The future focus in such diverse areas as mineral processing, waste treatment, recycling and biosciences is discussed and the research and development needs are outlined.

Complying with reduced dust standards (i.e., less than 2.0 mg/m3) due to quartz levels that exceed 5 percent is presently a critical problem for many continuous mining sections. Results are presented of research which was performed to determine the factors causing high levels of respirable quartz dust and to identify the major contributors to operator exposure. It was found that the significant sources of quartz dust are the drilling of the roof and the mining of the roof, floor and rock bands. Both the miner and the bolter may be on a reduced standard, but compliance is easiest to achieve on the bolter for which improvements in maintenance and operator practices are usually sufficient. At the miner, the problem is more elusive. Research continues to identify operating and mining practices that contribute to the exposure..

The United States Coal Mining Indus- try had the opportunity to greatly improve their roof control techniques during the nineteen seventies by the use of fully grouted resin roof bolts. This new tool was first approved for underground coal mines by M.S.H.A. ten years ago and during the next decade has been perfected to meet many problems previously thought to be unsolveable. The initial approved cartridge was very similar to the ones used in Europe in the nineteen sixties and since then has undergone a great deal of modification for our mines. These refinements in cartridge construction have been obtained by the close cooperation of resin manufacturers with mining personnel in perfecting pro- ducts customized to particular needs. This type of continuing program naturally necessitates a responsibility upon the resin anchor manufacturer to maintain a competant technical department. These roof control technicians by constant exposure to many of the most demanding underground problems, have developed through the years into leaders in successful applications. Today, Celtite has over twenty technically trained underground technicians with an accumulation of over one hundred years experience in resin anchors. Our documented technical reports are in excess of five thousand, involving over six hundred mines representing every major coal mining area in most mineable seams. This department has been the implement used to work with our research and development people in perfecting a continual line of improved resin anchors. This program has been a significant factor in leading the resin anchor industry into a position where approximately one third of the 1980 under- ground coal production used the fully grouted system. However, as gratifying as this accomplishment is, our experience has lead us to believe that there is an additional demand for a roof control system capable of combining the mechanical bolts ability to apply tension with resins proven superiority in anchoring. A significant number mines visited during the last decade had problems that we believed could be better answered by applying tension rather than the fully grouted approach. In most in- stances, their current mechanical installations were doing an adequate job until anchor slippage occured. Fully grouted systems solved this bleed-off problem. However, an acceptable number of falls still occured. In these some- what unique areas which we believe may amount to as much as fifteen percent of the total bolt installations, the need for improved anchors was a necessity. In developing this program we listed the ultimate requirements necessary for both the bolt and the anchor. These are for the bolt: A. Have one end manufactured so it can be grouted to the mine roof with polyester resin, obtaining a variable length from 12" to 36". B. Have a mechanism which allows the operator to tension the roof from zero to 10,000 psi. This mechanism should indicate if the roof is in compression and the bolt in tension. C. Have a mechanism which allows the operator to thoroughly mix the resin. D. The head of the bolt should not extend below the roof line any more than a normal mechanical bolt. E. Not require any extra tools for installation. F. Be bendable for use in low seam coal. G. Be durable and inexpensive. The ultimate point anchor resin should have the following characteristics: A. Have a mix and gel cycle which would compete with a mechanical bolt for speed of installation. B. Have a pull out strength in excess of a normal 5/8" mechanical bolt.

The optimisation of mine complexes and related value chains is a challenging problem due to the simultaneous presence of a highly-dimensional decision space, integer decision variables, non-linear constraints and recovery functions, as well as geological and market uncertainty. In addition, if the uncertainty is revealed progressively, then decisions need to continuously adapt to new information, which poses additional challenges. Stochastic dynamic programming is a well-known class of methods for addressing problems where a decision-maker reacts to new information. While simplistic applications of dynamic programming using exact representations would be intractable for any realistic mine planning problem, new dynamic programming methods using approximate value function representations have been successfully implemented in the past to address problems of similar complexity. Over the past 20 years drum scrubbers have become a widely adopted technology within iron ore beneficiation plants. Generally, the drum scrubbers in use are considered high-capacity machines capable of accepting larger-sized feed material. Together with a water addition to a desired pulp density and a mild energy input, these large rotating machines effect an attritioning action that removes water soluble clays and other deleterious materials. Within the Western Australian iron ore industry, drum scrubbers have been successfully applied to Channel Iron, Marra Mamba, Bedded and Detrital orebodies. The introduction of drum scrubbers has enabled Western Australian producers to satisfy the substantial increase in demand for iron ore from Chinese steelmakers by making the lower-grade sections of the above orebodies economic. However, despite being a relatively simple unit process, the requirements for successful design and operation of these machines are not fully understood. This paper draws on the collective experience of both authors to provide some points to consider for incorporating drum scrubbers into iron ore beneficiation plant flow sheets.

Just a few years ago, my company was referred to as the Marion Steam Shovel Company. Though we still make shovels, both two and eight-crawler types, the eight-crawler stripping shovel appears to have been replaced by the walking dragline for overburden removal and in some cases for the mineral as well. The walking dragline appeared in the coal fields in the early 1930&apos;s. It is popular because it can cope with overburden depths in excess of 100 ft and with blasted sedimentary rock, all at an O & O (ownership and operational) cost of ±10[c] per bank cu yd (bcy).

The application of various bydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and electrochemical processes in the extraction, purification and production of radioactive metals as well as the use of various materials, eg. metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, etc. in the process, construction and handling equipment in the nuclear industry has generated a large stockpile of radioactively contaminated waste material and scrap metal which can not be directly discarded, recycled or considered for long-term storage due to its volume and potential hazards, without the separation of radionuclides. This paper reviews the emerging methods that have been &apos;investigated and suggested for dealing with some of these wastes&apos; and scrap material. The separation technologies studied for the recovery of radioactive components from the pyrometallurgical and electrochemical processing wastes have been discussed in details with results from some of the recent theoretical and physical modeling work as well as the data obtained? from the actual waste treatment. Specific processes shall be described in terms of its advantages and limitations. These emerging separation technologies are being considered by the US Department of Energy as alternatives for dealing with the issues of environmental management [EMI&apos; and decontamination and decommissioning [D&D].
