"For optimum smelting results, proper treatment of the feed is needed to ensure favourable conditions for ignition characteristics, heat balance, mass balance with tolerable impurity levels, and overall process economics. Feed preparation consists of physical treatments before drying (blending), chemical treatments before drying, (roasting, if required), drying itself and physical treatments after drying (fractioning, if required).Effects of fluctuation on mineralogy and moisture should be minimized by blending the concentrates in a bedding plant prior to drying. As an alternative to drying, additional treatments such as roasting for impurity removal may be needed for part of the concentrate.Sustainability, energy efficiency, utilization of waste energy, low gas and dust emissions, product quality, availability and occupational exposure reduction are decisive criteria in drying today. These criteria are best met by the Kumera steam dryer, which has the best energy efficiency, zero CO2 emission, lowest operational and maintenance expenses, and superior availability and product quality.IntroductionFeed preparation plays a crucial role in having a smooth smelting operation and also the overall smelting economics in metal production. Therefore, it is of significant importance for all copper, nickel and lead smelter operations in which sulphide concentrates are fed to the primary smelting furnace. Generally speaking, the higher the metal content in the matte after primary smelting, the more important the feed preparation. This is of particular importance in the direct blister (DB) process for copper production and direct oxygen nickel (DON) for nickel production.Bedding is the first stage in feed preparation. This is very important for the sake of smoothing the mineralogical fluctuation in the feed for better smelting control. Its importance increases as the number of concentrates available for the feed mix decreases."

The HBMS reverb furnace in Flin Flon was originally designed in the late 1920s. Throughout the decades campaign life has been increased due to operational practices, technological changes and brick quality improvements. In recent decades the campaign life had been extended such that a complete rebuild was scheduled every 3 years. The latest furnace rebuild and start up has been after a campaign life of nearly 6 years. Brick construction methods and techniques along with furnace operational practices allow the present campaign to be double that of the historical campaign length.

"RMR geomechanics classification is being used all over the World as a useful tool for tunnel predesign and construction. Bieniawski (1989) provided guidelines for tunnel excavation and support, according RMR numerical values; guidelines which are now included in almost all tunnelling books, regulations, and Internet portals. But in the last 25 years tunnelling techniques have changed and some of the guidelines have become obsolete.. The conditions of tunnels for the 1989 guidelines application were: horseshoe shape; 10 m width; vertical stress < 25MPa; construction by drilling and blasting. Actually a substantial number of tunnels are mechanically excavated. The tunnel themselves are now bigger: a span of 14 m. is very common for transportation tunnels. The guidelines included the following concepts: excavation method, rock bolts (20 mm diameter, fully grouted), shotcrete, steel sets. There is an increasing gap between the 1989 guidelines and the practice: in many tunnels different to-the-case excavation and support requirements are established. Bieniawski himself has published a paper (Lowson & Bieniawski, 2013) with different guidelines based in Lowson’s practice, with no explanations and/or justification.In this paper a new set of RMR tunnelling guidelines is proposed taking account of the actual industry conditions, and increased safety regulations. The 5 classes’ limit RMR:values (80,60,40,20) are no more useful actually: Values of RMR (70, 50, 30) are used in practice to define quite different tunnelling techniques. Consequently a 10 subclasses system is proposed. Each subclass covers a span of 10 RMR points. As the number of mechanically excavated tunnels has increased a new correction factor is necessary, according the excavation method.The proposed 2014 RMR guidelines are for tunnels 10 to 14 meters wide, the world practice for new roads/railways tunnels. Many tunnels for water/ services are smaller with smaller support needs. Wider than 16 m caverns are out of the RMR system.It is not possible, nor desirable, to propose only a value for support in each subclass. The new guidelines propose an interval of values for certain types of support. More pessimistic values must be chosen for wider tunnels, tunnels with lower RMR values in each class and cases when a higher safety factor is asked for. More optimist ones are chosen for narrower tunnels, and higher RMR values. Some alternatives are almost complementary, others are contradictory. Sometimes several different techniques are proposed Guidelines are not automatic options. Good engineering judgment must be used when choosing between the different alternatives. Guidelines are not mandatory suggestions."

Preparation and Use.-Magnesite is an important refractory in open-hearth, heating, and electric furnaces for steel-making and in many of those employed in the metallurgy of copper and lead. It is sold in the form of brick, finely ground "furnace magnesite" for brick-laying, and dead-burned grains for making and repairing furnace bottoms. The latter are a mixture of granules varying in size from pieces of about 5/8 in. (1.6 cm.) diameter to very fine but sandy particles. Dead-burned magnesite results from calcining &apos;the crude or lightly burned mineral at a temperature that will not merely drive off practically all the CO2, but will also cause sintering of the particles. During this process the pieces shrink considerably and become hard, dense, and inert to atmospheric moisture and C02; under-burned material, on the other hand, will hydrate on exposure to the air. A small percentage of ferric oxide seems to be necessary for the production of a satisfactory sinter; from 4.5 to 8 per cent. in the dead-burned grains is considered the most desirable amount. Dolomite has been little used for brick-making in the United States, but it is prepared for use in the granular condition calcined or "double-burned" and is the principal ingredient of several materials offered for sale under various trade names for refractory purposes. Dolomitic refractories are almost wholly confined to the open-hearth and electric furnaces, where they are used for fettling and as substitutes for magnesite. Much more magnesite and dolomite are used for basic open-hearth steel-making than for all other refractory purposes. The hearth of the furnace is usually built up of magnesite brick and dead-burned grain magnesite so laid that the brick base is protected by a working bottom of the granular material. The latter is sintered into place in layers 1 to 2 in. (2.5 to 5 cm.) thick to a total depth of 12 to 18 in. (30 to 45 cm.) at the center of the furnace. "Construction for the restoration and expansion of 102-year-old Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois began at the conclusion of the 2014 baseball season. This six year project involves structural upgrades to the Stadium, improvements to the facade, infrastructure, restrooms, concourses, suites, press box, and bullpens, as well as the addition of restaurants, patio areas, batting tunnels, video boards, an adjacent Office-retail Tower and a new Hotel. The Bleachers were demolished and replaced, and a new underground Clubhouse was constructed for the Chicago Cubs beneath a new open-air Plaza. The 1060 Project is privately funded, projected at $750 million (US). The work will be completed in phases during consecutive off-seasons, each with a maximum 23-week duration extending through the Chicago winter. Ownership mandated that on-going construction cause no disruption to the Major League Baseball season, have no impact on hosting concerts and other special events, and it should not adversely affect seating capacity, or diminish the fan experience.The 1060 ProjectAfter purchasing the Chicago Cubs baseball team in 2009 from the Tribune Company, the Ricketts family began planning the renovation and improvement of Wrigley Field and its near neighborhood surroundings in Chicago, Illinois. What came to be known as the 1060 Project was officially announced at the annual Cubs Convention in 2013. Construction began on the $750M privately funded project in October 2014 at the conclusion of the Major League Baseball season. In their vision, the Ricketts committed the 1060 Project to three primary goals. First and foremost as a MLB franchise, the work should provide a meaningful contribution toward winning the World Series and ending the championship drought which stretched to the last win in 1908. Second, the project should be focused on preserving and improving Wrigley Field. Finally, the project should be committed to outcomes that enable the team to be a good neighbor and provide economic and social benefit to the local community.Constructed as Weeghman Park in 1914 for an estimated total cost of $250,000, the stadium provided seating for 18,000 fans and a home for the Chi-Feds and Whales of the National Federal League. The Chicago Cubs were enticed to move from the West Side Grounds in 1915. In the next 100 years, the Wrigley Field would be sliced apart and expanded, double its seating capacity with the addition of double deck grandstands, be enclosed by bleachers (and an ivy covered wall), and, in 1988, experience its first nighttime baseball game with the addition of lighting.The 1060 Project has a total budget of $750M, with an expected construction value of $350M. It is projected to add over 2,100 jobs to the economy and be completed before the 2020 baseball season. "This paper examines the application of blasthole sloping to narrow vein mining in Canada, for ore deposits where widths are less than two metres. While the technique has now been utilized for more than ten years, it remains in the experimental stage and on-site testing is necessary for its adoption at new mining operations or in differ¬ent geological settings. It is intrinsically a safer method than other narrow vein methods in current use.The investigation describes the main operating parameters for mines recently surveyed. The criteria for method applicability are defined and the problems encountered are studied. It is concluded that blasthole sloping for narrow vein mining is a viable modern method which promises to gain popularity and that emerging fragmentation technology and blasting research can be used to further increase applicability of the stoping method."

This paper reviews hydrometallurgical processing technology for refractory gold ores, which form an increasing resource stock for gold. The reasons fQr ore refractoriness and pressure, chemical and biooxidation process options are briefly listed. Electrochemical technology, suitable for processing refractory ore is reviewed and some preliminary results for the electrochemical oxidation of slurried arsenopyrite are given.

The Secretary of the Treasury, in a recent ruling, allows 18 months from date of discharge within which former service men may reinstate their Government insurance policies lapsed f or non-payment of premiums. The point just now confronting the Bureau of War Risk Insurance and all those who are interested in the immediate and the future welfare of the young men who offered their lives for the flag and the country is that they be kept mindful that the provisions of the War Risk Act were not solely war measures, but that the framers of the Act provided insurance protection for all time to come for the boys in uniform and all dear to them. Under this ruling those making application for reinstatement will be required to pay only the premium on the amount of insurance to be reinstated for the month of grace during which they were protected, and for the current month. When the men are mustered out of the service, the insurance continues in force for one month and they are fully protected during that period even if their premium has remained unpaid. In reinstating, that month&apos;s premium will be required as well as the premium for the month in which reinstatement is effected. The ruling also stipulates that when applying for reinstatement the man must be in as good health as at the date of discharge, and so state in his application. After complying with these simple requirements, a Government insurance policy may be made as sound as on the day it was written. The Bureau of War Risk Insurance is now searching out its delinquent policy holders and offering them this renewal of Government protection. It needs the assistance of public spirited, patriotic, business and professional men everywhere, for the sake of our former service men, who must be given the information about its privileges to which they are entitled.

The operation of flotation plants has been improved over the years by use of fundamentally based design techniques, a better understanding of reagent chemistry, online metal analysis and the use of digital control systems. However, optimal operation of flotation banks is not consistently achieved using manual operation. The reason for this is that the system is a highly interacting one, with changes in air addition, cell interface level and reagent dosages all being available, without it necessarily being clear as to which change should be made for a particular situation.This situation is made more complex by the fact that the feed to a flotation bank can vary in flowrate, composition and density over a fairly short period of time. It is not possible for a human operator to reject these disturbances, given the extent of the operation that is typically being monitored.Model predictive control (MPC) is a control and optimisation technique, developed in the oil refining industry, that aims to manage just such interacting multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. This technology makes use of linear dynamic models of the plant, that are experimentally derived. These models are then used in a receding horizon strategy to determine an optimal trajectory of the inputs to the system.MPC has been applied to four areas of the lead zinc flotation unit at Mount Isa mines. A total of 31 cells are being controlled by the system, which varies air to the cells, levels and reagent addition on a minute-by minute basis. The MPC controls concentrate and tail grades, reagent dosages, as well as recoveries to ranges set by the plant metallurgists.The development of the MPCs is discussed, together with the benefits realised. The critical distance determination test through direct recording for the mine in Phase 03 was carried out in January 2024, and in it the vibration and pressure models were obtained for the Sedimentary breccia unit. The method of obtaining the records is based on the capture of individual pressure waves generated by distant loads, sequenced in periods of 600 ms for easy identification. The test set up corresponds to a variation of that used to obtain the vibration model, and uses 08 wells for loads and 04 for instrumentation. The results apply a safety factor of 1.2 and 1.5, being 16,000 PSI and 13,250 PSI respectively. The values are valid for any distance greater than 5.5 m, this being the minimum established between wells for loads according to the configuration defined in the field, also considering that in 5.0 m of instrumentation the section of the drill hole with the sensor called S1 collapsed. The results of the analysis of the test, generated with Heavy Anfo 82 explosive, with a final density of 1.15 g/cc, are presented. The results of the modeling and generation of the graphs and tables presented show behavior in line with the concept of scaled distance. It is important to consider that in water conditions there is a high impact by the condition, which causes the records to be higher than those expected in dry conditions and present less variability. It is for the above reason that the row corresponding to distance with safety factor 1.5 is declared valid. The results are only valid for the rock analyzed, whose medium is homogeneous and constant in terms of lithological composition and that present similar resistance characteristics, fracture frequency and water table levels. As future steps, the objective is to quantify the increase in pressure generated between wells by analyzing time and sequence factors. This analysis aims to explain the occurrence of dynamic pressure events in areas where critical safety distances are observed.

Coal has the advantages over oil of greater safety of handling and smaller losses in storage. But oil is, in the present stage of technical advancement, the more economical source of liquid fuel for internal-combustion motors. No method for direct use of coal in such motors has been developed that can compete with petroleum products. The automoblle engine and the airplane motor are designed to make the most effective use of gasoline.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

The Dittmer process for the debismuthising of lead by electrolysis beneath molten caustic soda has been scaled up to 100 kg lots for batchwise operation and to 20 kg per hour for a continuous flow of lead. Bismuth was decreas- ed from 0.03 to less than 0.005 wt. per cent for an electricity consumption of 220 kWh per ton of lead. Lower bismuth levels may be readily achieved if required.

BESIDES commanding increasing importance as an alloying element in combination with ferrous and other nonferrous metals, the variety of uses for pure nickel continues to widen. For coinage it is growing in popularity. These coins have been minted for 27 countries in 72 issues representing 69 denominations. Approximately 3,000,000,000 pieces have been struck, the aggregate weight, of which amounts to nearly 14,000 tons. . Danzig, Iraq and Japan are the most recent governments to adopt, pure nickel coinage. France is adding the denomination of five francs to its other nickel currency; they replace silver pieces. Germany is now minting a new issue of one Reichsmark coins of pure nickel. The Japanese program for 1933 called for the issue of 35,000,000 10-sen pieces and 30,000,000 5-sen pieces. The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the field of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipuent. The failure consequences of these machines have major safety and economic implications for a mine operator. The reliability centered maintenance (RCM) approach has been found cost effective for equipment maintenance and for achieving high level system perform- ance by many organizations such as airline, military, chemical, process and manufac- turing industries. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe in brief the basic concepts of a RCM approach, the methods of RCM analysis and its cost effectiveness for maintenance of equipment. Since this approach is comparatively new for the mining industry, suitable examples are given to illustrate the case.

The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February." -Mark Twain Although the preceding chapters describe the type of preliminary evaluation frequently performed in the mining industry, it has been assumed that input data are known with certainty-clearly an enormous simplification. In reality, estimates of ore grade, mining cost, metal price, etc., are subject to varying degrees of uncertainty due to the inability to predict the future with much precision. Management would probably not, for example, be equally attracted to two projects each offering a 20% DCFROI-one for a new gold venture in Nevada and the other for an undersea manganese nodule operation in the Pacific. The high risk with the latter investment tells the obvious; there is more to investment decision-making than a deterministic analysis using "best estimates" of input parameters. The science of decision theory normally distinguishes between decisions under uncertainty, where probabilities of various outcomes are unknown; and decisions under risk, where such probabilities can be estimated. The first case is rarely en- countered in practical capital investment analysis in mining, so the remainder of this chapter focuses on that class of problems where rational probability distributions for the future states of input variables can be estimated. RISK IN MINING Risk in the context of this chapter is the unforeseen deviation of individual cash flows from expected values for a capital project. GRAVITY surveying with the torsion balance or the pendulum for ore prospecting purposes has generally not been considered practical or even possible. It is the intention of this paper to show that a fast and sensi-tive gravimeter can be very useful in ore prospecting, as an auxiliary to the electrical and magnetic instruments. A number of gravimeters have been constructed and put in practical use in the last seven or eight years; for instance, by Ising, Lejay-Holweck, Haalck, Hartley, Thyssen, Noergaard, the Humble Oil and Refining Co. and the Gulf Production Co. Their main application, apart from their use for geodetic surveys, has been for structure mapping in oil prospecting. There is no record that any of them have been used for ore prospecting. About the middle of 1934 the Boliden Mining Co., in Sweden, began experiments in constructing a static gravity meter sensitive enough for ore prospecting. Calculations and considerations that will be discussed later in this paper showed that this would necessitate an accuracy in the measurements of 0.1 milligal-roughly, one ten-millionth part of the total force of gravity. The first successful practical field tests of the instrument were made in January 1936. About the middle of 1937 the Boliden gravimeter was perfected. Ore prospecting with this instru-ment is now regular practice in Sweden, especially for the testing of indications given by geoelectric and magnetic methods.

Risks in underground construction are often viewed as technical in nature; "running ground, " "squeezing ground" and "chimneys" are terms that appear in construction managers&apos; nightmares, and occasionally in their underground projects. Financial consequences of these and other project risks are reviewed. Special attention is paid to sources of cost overruns. From this study a structure evolves for setting priorities for risk management actions; these actions can also be tested for impact and potential effectiveness. Finally, case study reviews of six underground projects indicate the "state of the practice" for financial risk management.

Recently, the demand for ultra-thin steel plate with high hardness and strength has been increasing in various industries. In order to satisfy this requirement, steel company designs the chemistry with low CEQ and obtains the required characteristics through quenching and tempering process. Especially, these steels are accompanied by low temperature tempering as a necessary process. Unlike ordinary high temperature tempering steels, it is impossible to improve the flatness after low temperature tempering. Therefore, shape control in the quenching process is very important for securing the excellent quality flatness. In order to obtain flatness in the quenching process, uniform cooling inside the plate should be accompanied. However, the quenching process has limitations in estimating the temperature behavior during cooling because the plate temperature is lowered to room temperature. In this study, a thermocouple was installed inside the actual quenching plate to measure the temperature behavior during cooling and to establish the manufacturing conditions of the quenching plate to ensure excellent flatness quality.

The selection of the ore haulage system is one of the most crucial decisions made in the development of an underground mining project. The haulage system is, once selected, one of the components of a mine that defines its ability to respond to changes in mining inventory and the market conditions for its products. Over the last decade, in Australia at least, this selection process has largely centred on the debate over the merits of shaft and decline truck haulage. Little attention, if any, was given to the application of inclined conveyor haulage as a real alternative to the shaft and truck haulage. This is despite well established precedents for its application in the underground coal industry and some limited applications in underground metalliferous mines. This paper seeks to explore the case for the application of inclined conveyors as a legitimate ore haulage system for underground mines. The case for conveyor haulage is illustrated by an overview of the application of conveyors at some existing operations, and discussion of what conveyors have to offer as a mine haulage system and the issues that are associated with them. Material drawn from the feasibility studies for NewcrestÆs Ridgeway mine and Telfer Deeps Project is presented as case studies that considered selection of inclined conveyor haulage. The purpose of these case studies is to highlight the value of impartially approaching tasks of this type with a robust plan. This plan should be able to respond to issues identified as the task progresses towards the objective of finding the right solution for an ore haulage system.
