"Clays are common ingredients in pharmaceutical products both as exclplents and active substances. Clay minerals are naturally cationic exchangers and they may undergo ion exchange with basic drugs in solution. Smectites, and montmorillonite have been studied due their high cation exchange capacity as compared to other silicates. Recently a patented study reports the use of attapulgite as the encapsulating agents both for the protecting the active substance and modulating release into the body. Some clays such as kaolinite, smectites, talc, etc are also used as dermatological protectors. Sepiolite and smectites have the ability to form complexes with organic compounds with absorb ultra-violet radiation, enabling them to be used in sun screens with protection factors. The objective of this work is to characterize the attapulgite in order to study the potential use of this clay material in the human health.IntroductionSince the begimling of time, nature has served humanity as a source of various raw materials. Among these, clays such as kaolinite and ilitte are common ingredients in the tile production. Recently, special clay materials have been investigated in order to identifY new potential uses of these class of materials. Clay materials are natural raw material and have excellent properties such as low toxicity, good biocompatibility, making them a good material to be used in biological applications. Attapulgite (paligorskite) and sepiolite is so called special clays. These special clay materials are very sin1ilar and have a great potential to be used in some technological areas due their special catalytic, sorptive and colloidal-rheological properties [1-8]. Recently some works have reported the use of these special clays materials for many applications such as drug delivery, wound dressing, oil absorbent, pesticides, fertilizers [9-12]. Brazil has a significant reserve of attapulgite located in Piaui state, making the study of the potential of this mineral in special areas, very attractive. Attapulgite is classified a fibrous alluminous silicate material and shows the presence of micro pores and channels, fine particle size and high surface area making this material a good candidate alternative material to be used in many industrial applications [6,8,9,11,12]. THE strip industry made rapid strides in regard to both width and gage until about 1922, when the maximum width was about 20 in. In the hot mills, strips of thin gages in wide widths could be pro-duced, but only at a sacrifice of length of coil, con-siderable increase in power, and decreased tonnage out-put on the min. Hot mills, like the Bray sheet mill and the modern strip and skelp mills, demonstrated that . wider strip could readily be rolled, if such a product was desired. The strip manufacturers were really limited in width, not by the hot strip, but by the cold rolling of wide strip. This factor was roll pressure. The diameter of rolls increased as the width of strip increased. For cold rolling strip 20 in. wide, cold rolls were approximately 20 in. diameter. As the rolls became larger, the arc of contact between the rolls and the strip increased approximately, according to the formula, b=\/Rd where b = the width of contact R = roll radius d = total reduction Now the crushing strength of cold steel of low carbon varies from 70,000 to 100,000 lb. per sq. in. With each succeeding pass the crushing strength increases and may approach 250,000 lb., according to the total reduction. The total reduction in cold rolling of low-carbon steel will range from 40 to 70 per cent of the original thickness, usually in about three or four passes. On this basis, assuming a reduction of 20 per cent in one pass, the crushing strength of steel assumed at 120,000 lb., we have a total pressure between rolls, which (assuming that the rolls do not deform) equals: Roll Strip Strip Diameter, Width, Thickness, In. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) FEW authors of treatises and papers on engineering subjects have . given adequate attention to topographic maps.. The statement applies especially to mining engineering in all branches. Even those who have discussed such maps have treated the subject only in a general way. Therefore it is proposed to outline in this paper a few of the uncommon, yet important relationships which topographic maps and their by-product, structure-contour maps, have to modern methods of mining investigation and development when the facts depicted on such maps are properly interpreted. Topography, as suggested by the etymology of the word, menus a detailed description of particular places. Written descriptions have been found less effective than the pictorial representations, therefore attempts have been made in various ways to picture the surface features of places. Lines and shading have been used, hachures drawn, and, finally, the contour topographic map. To a large extent this style of snap is the result of the demands of engineers. It is designed to meet their needs far more than those of the man untrained in engineering. In fact, the average man obtains a better idea of the topography of an area from the hachure system than from contour maps. . Since the maps. have been made chiefly for the use of the engineer, they ought to meet his demands on the one hand, and, on the other, should be used by him to the fullest extent. Such maps, when properly made, accurately portray a portion of the earth's surface and should present the topography better than a personal examination of the area without a map could present it, because the person making such examination views only a limited portion of the surface at a time, and estimates distances only roughly with his eye. Let the engineer consider carefully the fact that in many instances the topographic map is superior to a personal examination of the surface features of a property because the map is based on careful instrumental measurements, whereas the eye gives imperfect data because it can be used merely for the estimation and

WHEN the War Production Board issued its order which will end the use of iron and steel in more than 400 familiar civilian articles, the list of those products formed a fascinating and homeric catalogue of the things we use. Articles for which iron and steel may not be used after a 90-day "tapering-off" period are as workaday as office machinery and as frivolous as cocktail shakers. Mostly they are smaller items-the smallest probably are phonograph needles but in the aggregate they will save tremendous quantities of the metal most needed to win the war. In total war there are no trifles. Interesting proof of this lies in the fact that by eliminating manufacture of blackhead squeezers we shall save 110,000 lb. of steel a year. Out of this steel we might have made four 155-mm. field pieces. We might have made a thousand 3-in. trench mortars, 4400 0.30-caliber machine guns, 55 16-in. shells, 110 200-lb. aerial bombs, or three 15-ton tanks with something left over to arm them.

An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle's Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. Customer demand for greater efficiency and reduced operational costs on modern overland conveyors has focused attention on the conveyor belt's rolling resistance properties. Studies have indicated as much as 60% of the power losses on a long horizontal conveyor can be attributed to the indentation of the pulley cover rubber as it passes over idlers. This paper will compare tan delta values of different compounds with large scale rolling resistance test data from the University of Hannover. Results will then be compared to actual power consumption data gathered on several long overland conveyors using identical belt construction except with different pulley cover compounds. Concluding comments will be made indicating substantial operating cost differences based on the rolling resistance of the cover compound.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate weak rock masses (such as are associated with operations in the Carlin Trend in Nevada) into existing design relationships. The original database that led to most of the empirical design relationships presently employed in hard-rock mining was derived from fair-to-good-quality rock. In this study, the relationship between weak rock quality and opening design (nonentry/entry methods) is being investigated. The common factor in all mines is a weak back or wall. This work attempts to provide tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment.

An approximate analytic- model is developed for minerals liberation when comminution processes are applied to multi-component ores, i.e., ores that include grains of multiple mineral species. The model employs a one-dimensional representation of ore texture similar to that employed by King (1979) and Klimpel and Austin (1983). The spatial texture representation is viewed as being generated by a stationary semi-Markov process. Associated semi-regenerative processes are defined that can be used to establish, approximately, the joint distribution of particle size and composition, where composition refers to the identities and relative proportions of mineral species included within the particle. Numerical predictions made by the model are compared to size and composition distributions observed in previous experimental studies.

It is possible to divide industrial minerals into four general categories: 1. fuels, 2. construction materials, 4. agricultural minerals, and 4. industrial minerals. It is proposed to ignore the fuels in the context of this paper and deal in general terms with the others. Mining companies have often considered getting into the industrial mineral business because they can see a resource development with good growth and consistent profits. However, many mining companies being conversant with the metallic side of the industry have spent sleepless nights determining which industrial minerals are most suited for their particular situation. Some have got into the business for the wrong reasons and wished they had never heard of it. Others have successfully adapted to the industrial minerals philosophy and now operate in both metallic and industrial mineral arenas. There is a large difference between firstly, the philosophy and secondly, the functions of being in the industrial minerals business as opposed to metallicÆs. The philosophies can be considered in parallel but it is necessary to clearly have an appreciation of the dominant influences that affect industrial minerals.

As Olympic Dam rapidly expands into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the Mine Geology team has concurrently ramped up underground diamond drilling to sustain rates of above 175 km/a. With >10 underground rigs double-shifting, traditional paper sections used for the management of drill programs were no longer optimal due to scale of operations. An opportunity was identified to modernise monitoring of all underground diamond drill programs, through the integration of logged copper sulfide estimates with Olympic Dam’s first-fully integrated deposit-scale geological model in Leapfrog Geo. This paper describes the transition within the Mine Geology team from reliance on 2D paper sections, towards near-real time 3D geological modelling for optimising end-of-hole decisions in the field. This transition was enabled by innovative database solutions informing locally constrained implicit models, limited by a distance buffer around active underground fan drilling. Due to the high volume of historic drilling, there were significant computational challenges with the implementation of daily production style implicit models at Olympic Dam and initial testing of regular updates to implicit gradeshells and sulfide domains required in excess of 12 hrs to run. The enabling solution was to optimise the interfaces between the AcQuire database, Deswik MDM and Leapfrog Geo to create a dynamic, streamlined workflow that was easily completed by Mine Geologists in accordance with daily production duties. Geologists are now building rapid implicit models for a range of variables from an integrated data set of logged sulfide estimates and existing assays, spatially constrained by 150 m buffers around active drilling using a unique drill fan identifier flagged during the planning phase. Once the live-implicit models are updated, they are exported for visualisation on field tablets to be used during logging and core checks at the start and end of every shift. To manage the risk of ‘going digital’ interpretation remains at the forefront of the drill section close-out process, with Mine Geologists critically reviewing the finished sections on a standardised template with new learnings wireframed and communicated to stakeholders. The Live Field Model has enabled a step-change in the geological effectiveness of diamond drilling, reducing over – and under-drilling ore-waste at Olympic Dam continuing to push drilling effectiveness towards 20 per cent of intercepts >2 per cent Cu. In addition, upside or risk identified during the proactive management of drilling execution can be rapidly capitalised or mitigated.

New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels.

Senator Henry M. Jackson t D. Wash.) recently tossed a live grenade into the hardrock mining industry with proposed legislation to change provisions of the law governing Federally owned mineral values. Title Two of the measure would place hardrock mining agreements on a leasing basis similar to that which has applied to oil and gas since 1920. Known as the "Public Domain Lands Organic Act 01 1971" or S.921, the bill would monitor exploration by heavy machinery which ran destroy fragile ecology without any requirement for restoration or rehabilitation." Jackson said. Abandoned mining claims, lie continued, dot the public domain, "casting clouds upon the title to property which belongs to all the people.” and a minerals leasing system is "the most practical way of achieving the proper balance."

In assessing the future markets for a mineral from a producing district, three key aspects must be considered: 1) the future growth in markets, 2) the competitiveness of the district in terms of production costs and reserve adequacy, and 3) the competition from alternative sources of supply. This paper will focus on the first issue by developing a method of predicting the demand for phosphate from the trends in the major markets for phosphate products, primarily the fertilizer and agricultural markets. The paper will show how broad changes in the final end use markets for phosphate products have evolved over time and how this has affected the needs for phosphate rock. These trends are then projected into the future to make an assessment of future phosphate requirements.

"In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently completed phase 1 of a mapping effort that makes the United States the first nation to systematically acquire image maps of its underwater lands. In 1984, the USGS, as part of its mission to map and characterize the resources of the Federal lands, began a mapping effort in the newly proclaimed Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The goal was to provide sonar image maps of this frontier area within 10 years. The mapping program is on schedule, with two-thirds of the EEZ sea floor, approximately 2 million square nautical miles, happed in 7 years. The deep water EEZ (depth greater than 200 m) around the 50 states is now complete except for the North Slope of Alaska, where ice precludes our surveying with a surface ship. Phase 2 of the EEZ mapping effort will begin in 1994, focusing on the American Flag islands of the western Pacific. Approximately 1 million square nautical miles of sea floor remain to be mapped around the islands.

The 139th meeting* of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held at New York, February 17 to 20, 1930, the attendance totaling approximately 1800. The meeting consisted of the annual business session, 34 technical sessions at which were presented 166 papers, two meetings of the Board of Directors, two meetings of Section Delegates, two formal lectures and one special lecture, five group dinners and one group luncheon, luncheon daily for members and guests, fourteen committee meetings and conferences, the President's reception, the dinner-dance, an informal dance, a smoker, an exhibition of rare minerals and metals, two meetings of the Woman's Auxiliary and a special program of entertainment for the ladies. The Petroleum Division held seven sessions, including two general sessions featuring, respectively, a symposium on unit operation of oil pools and reports on developments in the petroleum industry during the previous year. The Iron and Steel Division held four sessions, at one of which Dr. Zay Jeffries delivered the Howe Memorial Lecture, the title of which was "The Future of the American Iron and Steel Industry." The Institute of Metals Division held six sessions, including two devoted to a symposium on the Melting and Casting of Metals, and the general session at which Dr. S. L. Hoyt delivered the annual Institute of Metals Lecture. The title of his lecture was "Hard Metal Carbides and Cemented Tungsten Carbide." The Coal and Coal Products Committee devoted one session and the greater part of another to Coal Classification and at a third session organized as the Coal Division of the Institute. The Committees on Mining Methods and Ground Movement and Subsidence each held a session, besides which they met jointly. In the first, bubbles begin to be evolved more or less rapidly from the lead, and in the second, which occurs at a higher temperature than the first, hydrogen and sulphur dioxide are evolved, free sulphur is liberated, and leadsulphate is formed. Mine floor failures, such as floor heave and floor buckling, occur frequently in underground coal mines where soft mine floor exists. The types of failure can usually be classified into two categories; shear punching failure and tensile failure. A model based on the Winkler's elastic foundation is proposed in this paper for floor stability analysis. The model considers material properties of floor strata, in-situ horizontal stress, pillar size, entry width, and configuration of multiple-entry system and predicts stress conditions in the mine floor based on given in-situ mining and geological conditions, as well as deformation of the mine floor. This information is used to predict possible failures of mine floor by comparing the strength of mine floor with its stress condition. The validity of the model is verified by in-situ data described in this paper.
