So FAR as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 135 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 tons daily to over 1000 tons per day in exceptional instances of modern practice. The key to this situation is economic pressure. The effect is a growing differentiation between furnace production for gray iron and malleable foundries and for the production of commercial steel. As the foundry is often compelled to draw upon the pig irons made for steel purposes, for economic reasons, whereas the steel industry does not draw upon foundry pig irons proper, the situation is resolving itself into one of grave consequence for the life of the gray-iron castings industry, and hence the intensive present-day feeling in foundry circles for rigid specifications to govern the quality of pig irons sold for foundry use. In the discussion of a paper on the use of scrap in the blast furnace held recently in the Institute, a very pertinent remark was made by one of the participating furnacemen, who confessed that "the things found wrong by the foundryman with his iron were beyond his depth." It may be added that those things are also beyond the depth of most foundrymen who, however, know from their results that they are getting poorer castings today with many pig irons than they did with those same brands in former years. Under the former fracture buying, the foundryman at least could select the strongest metal, as judged by the sledge, from various brands of similar fracture and pig section, and his results proved the soundness of his conclusions. "Abstract After noting the importance of standardization for piles, the European system is described (execution, tests and design, etc.). Some important aspects of Eurocode 7 are outlined (like the role of pile load tests). Finally, the calculation methods in the recent French standard for the design of piles following Eurocode 7 are shortly addressed.Importance of standardization for piles Like for other fields of geotechnical engineering, pile engineering is a complex art. For piles, the challenges are particularly numerous and many things must be mastered properly: - the soil investigation must be serious and adequate (for instance, deep enough!);- the choice of the pile type and the assumed behaviour must be assessed in order to reach a safe and economic design of the overall foundation;- the execution itself (construction and/or installation) deserves special attention and must follow strict state-of-the art rules.The geotechnical engineer, in charge of the design of a pile foundation, must have in mind the parameters linked to the variety of soils, of soil conditions and of pile types. A wide range of strong environmental issues are also to be considered: minimum disturbance during the execution processes, long-duration friendliness of the “inclusions” into the ground (to avoid pollution of the soils and waters, for instance) and respect of the neighbouring structures.Pile engineering plays in a world which is constantly moving and progressing: constructions expand in new difficult areas, actions on piles are more and more important, new execution techniques of piles are developed, research into the complex behaviour of pile foundations has no end, etc. Our views on how piles and group of piles really work are constantly evolving!"

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. Recent applications of explosives and blasting agents to rubble rock have led to requirements for more elaborate design and analysis methods. In most blasting uses, it is necessary not only to fracture the rock, but also to move the broken rubble in a predictable manner. Many in situ extraction techniques require rubblization to take place in a confined region where rock motion is a predominate factor in creating a permeable broken bed. In this paper, two analytical methods are presented which describe the large rubble motion during blasting. These methods provide the blast designer with a tool for evaluation and further refinement of blasting patterns and timing sequences. In both these methods, the rock medium is represented by a series of discrete, discontinuous regions. The use of discontinuous techniques rather than the classical continuum methods, results in better approximations to the rubble motion. These regions are set in motion by pressure loads from the explosive. The motion of these regions is then calculated numerically using interaction laws between regions in contact. The basis for these models or methods is presented along with the background for selecting explosive pressure loads and rock mass material behavior. Typical examples, including both cratering and bench blasting geometries, are discussed which illustrate the use of these models to predict rubble motion. Such engineering representations appear to provide a practical method for use in predicting rubble motion and a tool for design evaluation of blasting in confined geometries.

TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS for nothing at all except a sheepskin. That to me is the effect of the New York State law for registration of engineers and the same may be said of any of the state licensing laws. Of course, if one has to practice in more than one state, he must pay a more or less equal amount for every state he works in; and yet there has been little effective protest against these laws. It would seem that the spirit which animated the Boston Tea Party is non-existent amongst engineers. Undoubtedly a good many consider, through their failure to understand the law, that the matter does not affect them. In New York State it is provided that "any person practicing or offering to practice profes-sional engineering or land surveying . . . shall be licensed as hereinafter provided." To quote further from the law: "A person practices professional engi-neering . . . who holds himself out as able to do, or who does, the work that an engineer does . . . " The cunning of the wording of this article can only be appreciated by considering that anyone calling himself an engineer falls within the definition; its liberal inter-pretation (I have not quoted the whole of it) would embrace many who do not consider themselves engi-neers. The state authorities may not construe it to include such individuals; indeed, they may possibly consider it inexpedient to extend it to include engineers of subordinate grade, but the possibility is always there and, even though an engineer be of the grade of assis-tant, he may at any time be called upon to substitute for his principal in responsible charge of the work. It is therefore clear that anyone calling himself engineer and practicing engineering must, for his own protection, apply for registration or run the risk of violating the law. Now, what is the sense of all this? We have done very well without such restrictions on the means of gaining our livelihood. If one only stops to think, there is hardly a minute of his modern existence when he is not dependent for his safety on the engineering by engineers of yesterday or today. How often is one in jeopardy through failure of engineering works, work done under the supervision of those same engineers? If all of us had to wait for our ends by such means, our average life would probably be some thousands of years. Where, then, is the point to the object declared in all these laws that the need for licensing is "to safeguard life, health and property?" Bosh!

"In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the use of natural stone building and construct ion products. The largest growing markets are for pre-fabricated natural stone panels for interior and exterior wall facing and flooring. This increased demand is attributed to advanced quarrying and processing technologies, renewed appreciation for the aesthetic appeal of natural stone, and to the superior durability of natural stone when compared to glass, steel, and concrete. Geologically, plutonic rocks, and to a lesser extent marble and limestone/dolostone, are used extensively for these applications. This paper details the economic structure of the dimension stone industry, describes the necessary characteristics of a stone quarry, and outlines the geological criteria which favour an economic quarry.INTRODUCTIONThe world building stone industry has remained relatively stable over the last 5 to 6 years. In contrast, the North American stone industry has experienced substantial growth during that period. The increased use of commercial granite is primarily responsible for this growth, where use as exterior wall veneer for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings represents the largest and fastest growing market.This increased usage in the construction industry has been sparked by the application of new technologies in quarrying, processing and installation , ma king natural stone more competitive with man-made materials which are energy intensive to produce, and have risen dramatically in price. The development of safer, time-saving stone installation techniques has also appealed to the liability-conscience construction industry. Finally, there is a trend by designers and architects toward utilizing long-la sting weather-resistant building materials, and a renewed appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of natural stone. The other large user of granite is the monument industry of North America which, although it has decreased slightly in recent years, still consumes approximately 40% of all commercial granite produced. The local use of commercial marble has remained relatively stable, and North America still relies heavily on European sources and suppliers. There has been some concern over the use of marble for exterior applications in areas subject to acid rain, and in colder climates where the marble ma y be vulnerable to freeze thaw cycles. Despite these concerns, the greatest problem is not with the structural breakdown of marble but the inability of some marbles to retain their polished finishes in the se environments. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of granite at the expense of marble for exterior applications. Finally, commercial marble is used extensively for interior flooring, wall s, counter tops, furniture, sculptures, and stairway components"

Prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes are extremely complicated to install in underground sections with complex geometries and, despite being already subjected to quality tests in the factory, the installed membrane often exhibits leakages due to different reasons. Main sources of leaks are the required high amount of welding seams and damages caused during installation of reinforcement, as well as overstretching and poorly installed secondary concrete linings. Also the design of the tunnel lining is strongly influenced and limited by the use of prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes. The use of sprayed waterproofing membranes for more than a decade has contributed to durability and serviceability, as well as to increasing sustainability of tunnel linings. The presented sprayed waterproofing membrane MasterSeal 345 is an advantageous alternative to prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes under typical tunnelling conditions, especially in geometrically complex areas, such as in lay-by niches, cross passages and crossover caverns, where installation of conventional waterproofing membranes is inherently difficult, and locating leaks is challenging. This membrane has been successfully used in underground projects with different waterproofing design concepts and under diverse hydro-geological and environmental conditions for over a decade. It provides tunnel designers with different options and optimisation for the design of the tunnel concrete lining. Additional advantages to owners, contractors and designers from the use of the sprayed membrane include flexibility in the design, increased productivity and flexibility in working programming, as well as improved logistics, resulting in significant program and cost savings and reduced long-term maintenance costs. This paper describes the key features of this sprayed waterproofing membrane, its application range and limitations, the waterproofing concept, design options and related benefits. As of November 2012, the Alberta government listed 53 oil and gas, oil sands, and mining construction projects either proposed or currently under construction. These industrial plant construction projects have an estimated value greater than 105 million dollars. A common construction method employed for industrial plant projects is fast-track construction, which is used to reduce construction time. Contractors begin fast-track construction with highly generic scheduling information. This high level schedule turns into a lower level schedule as more detailed information becomes available. From a contractor?s perspective, a challenge faced using fast-track construction is the visualization of generic and constantly changing project schedules. This paper discusses the use of a Plant Information Modeling (PIM) system, designed to create a 4D animation to visualize project schedules for fast-track industrial plant construction projects. The proposed PIM system creates a modified project schedule by obtaining specific information from a generic construction schedule. Obtaining the information involves grouping schedule activities in accordance with the level of detail in a 3D model, and the level of detail in a project schedule. The modified project schedule is then used in conjunction with a 3D model to simulate the construction sequence in the form of a 4D animation. This allows for 4D visualization of project activities, installation dates, and crane movements. Furthermore, as engineering reaches completion, the PIM system creates a streamlined channel for schedule information updates to be easily uploaded into the model for a more accurate 4D visualization. Through analyzing a nonmodular construction case study, this paper discusses the successes and benefits of the PIM system for 4D visualization, such as increased productivity, shortened construction time, increased constructability, and decreased field costs.

The aim of the project was the development of an electroforming process for the production of medical implants out of gold. To prove the applicability of this technology, tympanostomy tubes were chosen as demonstrators. These barbell-shaped tubes are usually produced mechanically; of silicone or, for higher therapeutic demands, of metal ? gilded silver or gilded stainless steel. Gold electroforming of the tubes as an alternative manufacturing process would reduce the expenditures for the mechanical preparation and lower the corrosion susceptibility significantly. To obtain electroformed gold tubes of the desired shape, the following steps are necessary: fabrication of a negative template by drilling holes with countersinks in an insulated aluminium sheet, electroforming process, removal of the aluminium by using a sodiumhydroxide solution. For the optimisation of the shape and surface quality of the tubes respectively the simplification of the manufacturing process, various parameters were tested, e.g. aluminium quality and sheet thickness, type of insulation layer, substrate processing, hydrodynamic conditions, type of electroforming electrolyte, electrodes position, etc. The manufactured tubes were characterised in view of thickness distribution, hardness, surface roughness and purity in comparison to mechanically produced reference tubes. From the results obtained during the project it can be concluded that electroforming processes can be easily adopted for the manufacture of medical implants. The time-consuming electroforming process is by far compensated by the simultaneous production of an arbitrary number of implants.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. This paper discusses the use of micropiles for the rehabilitation of the following two structures: the Milwaukee Auditorium Theatre, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the Cupples Ballpark Lofts, in St. Louis, Missouri. The paper focuses on the similarities and differences of the remediation techniques used for each structure. The discussion highlights the method of attaching the micropiles to each respective structure. Generally the paper discusses the micropile installation at each project with supporting photos, figures and data. Load testing at each project is also discussed, including the comparison of load test results for each project. The paper will focus on the load testing program at the Milwaukee Auditorium Theatre where high capacity micropiles were designed and tested as friction piles founded in stiff clays and end bearing micropiles in dolomitic limestone. The results of the test were used to determine if the micropiles on the project would be installed as end bearing or friction bearing elements. Strain gauges were used in addition to conventional deflection vs. load data for the Milwaukee Auditorium Theatre project. Other aspects of the paper will include the differences in design methodology for end bearing micropiles in massive dolomitic limestone vs. design in softer, weathered limestone.

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. The starting powders' physicochemical properties and consistency are essential for technical ceramic products to meet their performance specifications. The need for finer and more consistent powders has opened new technologies for synthesizing powders from atoms and molecules. However, submicron and near-micron powders obtained from conventional comminution and classification techniques are still competitive. This paper shows several examples from electronic ceramic applications of how we can use powder characteristics for micromanaging by design the ceramic properties such as the green and fired densities, slurry rheology, shrinkage during sintering, and the microstructure of the sintered bodies. The cross-disciplinary nature of the technology requires that the researcher not only should have a firm grip on the fundamentals of one or more disciplines, but also should be generally aware of the intricacies of other disciplines as well.

Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. The operation and performance of these filters is discussed and compared to the lab testing used to size the full-scale equipment.CITATION:Pepper, D, 2012. The observations here presented are not those of an expert accountant, but of one who, while he has seen considerable service in the accounting departments of large companies, has spent more time in engineering and operating. This paper is intended to cover, in a measure, mine accounting for small mines, as distinguished from the elaborate systems, requiring many persons in the accounting department. I shall attempt to outline a system embracing the essentials of accounting, and simple enough in form to permit one or two persons to carry it on from month to month, in sufficient detail to be able to tell quickly the grade of ore, the prices received for metals, costs per ton for mining and milling, costs per foot for development, upward or downward tendencies in costs, ore settled or in transit, cash on hand, stocks of supplies on hand, efficiency of labor, etc. As in all accounting, there are two main divisions: that of revenue received for what is sold, and that of disbursements made for what is bought, so in mine accounting we have to consider chiefly the income derived from sales of ore or concentrates, and the expenses incurred in producing the said ore or concentrates in a marketable condition. I. Income The revenue of a mining company from the sale of ore or concentrates comes in the form of remittances, accompanied by settlement sheets made out by the buyer of the mine product, such as a smelting company. It is the duty of the mine accountant (or the person to whom this is assigned in connection with other work) to check these settlement sheets, against both the mine weights and assays, and the schedules of prices arranged between the mine and the smelter. As a rule, quotations for silver, lead, zinc, copper and other metals enter into the settlements, and require checking, as do also bills of lading. 13.9-1. Introduction. Any mining venture or project is undertaken with a view of gaining some benefits, which, with the modern limited corporation, means earning a return to the stockholders for the use of their funds. Thus, any manager, when confronted by an opportunity of expending funds, must realize that the funds should generate a satisfactory return. The problem then becomes one of how the manager should best expend, if he should expend, funds for opportunities that become available to him. In the evaluation of a mineral property, or of a project within an operating mineral property, there must be cognizance of the fact that the final return is dependent on many factors that are not present in other industries. The primary factor in mining operations is the orebody, which has a diminishing life. This diminishing life gives the decision maker a range of choices; for by expending more capital for a larger plant, he can work the deposit out in a shorter period (16). This may, in fact, maximize the return on the investment. Alternatively, he may wish to maximize the total profits, a course which usually requires a lower capital investment and allows a longer working life for the deposit before final depletion. Other factors that have great importance in the evaluation of mining projects are the taxation treatment of mining profits from the viewpoint of depletion, depreciation, and investment credit. Investment opportunities involve expending funds at the present time in return for future benefits. These future benefits have a degree of risk in that the annual amounts of benefits and their duration cannot be fore- cast accurately. The treatment of risk in economic analysis involves the quantification of the degree of variability of the expected future benefits and also of the initial capital expenditure. The paper describes four different types of support for deep excavations, which are currently used in China. Local experiences were illustrated by presenting case histories for each type of support. For braced excavation in soft clays in Shanghai, the earth pressure against bracings were found to be in conformity with the trapizoidal estimation given by Terzaghi and Peck (1967). For tie-back support of excavations in Beijing and Shengyang, earth pressures were found to be much less than those predicted by ordinary rules. In the construction of a mining shaft in coarse sand below ground water level, high pressure jet grouting has been successfully used to form a circular impervious lining of the shaft. As an effective anti-slide measure, large diameter reinforced concrete piles constructed by open shaft method have been widely used with success.

Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. This paper describes measured data on strata behavior obtained in recent years from sites in the United Kingdom and the implications for pillar design. The data include results from overcoring stress measurements adjacent to coal mine roadways and deformation monitoring related to longwall extraction. The stresses adjacent to mine roadways or entries have been measured at a number of coal mine sites in the United Kingdom. The results are analyzed with regard to the information they provide on pillar behavior and strength estimates. A reduction in stress consistent with yielding of the strata adjacent to the roadways is evident. This is consistent with the confined core model for pillar behavior. The pillar strength is dependent on the rate atwhich vertical stress can increase with distance from the pillar edge and hence the confinement provided to the yielded material. The measured data indicate a wide range in pillar strengths. Two groups of results are identified that show significantly different behavior corresponding to differing effective pillar strengths. Estimates of pillar strengths derived from the measured data for these two groups are compared with established equations used for pillar design. The differing behaviors and strengths are attributed to variations in the amount of yielding and deformation in roof and floor strata and hence in the amount of confinement they provide to the coal seam. Numerical modeling is used to provide a comparison with the measured data and to indicate that this provides a feasible mechanism to account for the measured data. As the depth of mining increases, pillars tend to become increasingly wide and squat. In such cases, it is possible for the surrounding roadways to become badly deformed and damaged while the pillars remain stable. The criteria of comparing pillar strengths and loads to establish pillar stability become less applicable in these circumstances; rather, considerations of roadway stability may be the limiting factor in determining suitable pillar dimensions. This is the case for pillar dimensions typically employed around longwall panels in the United Kingdom. Depending on the properties of the site and what are deemed to be satisfactory roadway conditions, this can lead to wide variations in required pillar dimensions. Measured data for deformations in roadways influenced by adjoining longwall workings are presented. These show that in some circumstances the influence of longwall extraction can be transmitted over large distances and confirm the variability in required pillar sizes depending on site properties.

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2.
