Autonomous fragmentation measurement systems designed for shovels have been in operation for nearly two decades, however fragmentation systems capable of performing in the dynamic conditions of the front-end loaders (FEL) were only recently introduced to the market. This paper presents an in-depth evaluation of an automated digital fragmentation measurement system specifically designed to perform under the dynamic operational conditions of the FEL in two of Teck’s mine sites. As early adopters of this novel application, Teck embarked on a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) trial phase, defining a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to qualify the performance of the digital solution in tough mining operating environments. The KPIs focused primarily on the hardware robustness, quality of image and segmentation, both day and night, availability of the system and sample ratio. The benefits expected from using this technology include increasing the safety of the current fragmentation measurement process, improving the quality of the analysis, increasing the sample representativeness, and using the attributes of the system to create an oversize detection alert to inform the loading operation process. A critical part of the evaluation was verifying the system’s effectiveness on the particle segmentation algorithm as this element often gets overlooked, especially when dealing with the large number of samples autonomous systems can generate; minor misclassifications due to inadequate segmentation are often dismissed as they might not be statistically significant, however systematic misclassifications can cause unacceptable deviation in the data and limit the intended application of the technology. The system’s performance was further validated through several tests that involved identifying objects of known sizes to ensure the reliability on the consistency of the particles’ segmentation.

"Catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in combustion of coals was investigated in this paper. Catalytic combustion of four kinds of coals with different metamorphic grades by CeO2 was examined, suggesting that catalytic function of CeO2 increases with increase of metamorphic grade of the coals. One important reason for CeO2 promoting combustion of the coals is that pyrolysis of anthracite is advanced by CeO2, which not only raises the pyrolysis rate and pyrolysis conversion ratio, but increases contents of light components in pyrolysis gas; and both pore space and specific surface area of the pyrolysis char are enlarged by CeO2, which is another reason. In order to realize in situ catalysis for reducing catalyst consumption, it is crucial to increase catalyst particle number and enhance the bonding force between catalyst and coal. In addition, remarkable energy saving effect was observed when a nanometer calcium-based rare earth catalyst obtained by hydro-thermal synthesis was applied to catalytic combustion of coal injection into blast furnace.Introduction Coal combustion is acknowledged as one of the most important coal applications. Since addition of catalysts could reduce the ignition temperature of pulverized coal and accelerate the coal combustion, catalytic combustion is generally accepted as an effective measure to realize fast combustion of coal. Furthermore, different catalysts added may produce different effects on ignition temperature of coal. It is reported activity of catalysts with the same cation follows this order: OH->CO3 2->Cl->SO4 2-; while that of the catalysts which have the same anion follows: Cs+>Rb+>K+>Na+>Ba2+>Li+>Sr2+>Ca2+>Mg2+>Be2+ [1-4] .Due to the special physical and chemical structure, CeO2 plays an important role in the catalysis field. Many literatures point out that CeO2 not only has great catalytic effect on energy conversion, succeeded in catalyzing combustion of gaseous fuels such as CH4, CO, etc. but also can catalyze combustion of some liquid and solid fuels such as JP-10, black carbon, carbon deposit in the automobile exhausts and so on [5-9].Pyrolysis, the first step of combustion, directly influences ignition temperature and combustion rate of coals. So a great variety of catalysts were applied to catalyze pyrolysis of coals. And plenty of studies suggest that the alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds inherent in the coals show apparent catalytic effect on coal pyrolysis. Meanwhile, addition of alkali and alkaline-earth metals into coal combustion process also indicates obvious catalysis effect, accelerating coal pyrolysis, improving pyrolysis conversion ratio, increasing contents of pyrolysis gases and changing composition of the pyrolysis gases [10-15].Although alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds have good catalysis effect on coal combustion, their application in the catalysis field was limited because of their erosive attack to the combustion equipments. In contrast, CeO2, as a substitution of the traditional coal catalysts, presents widely potential application due to its good catalysis ability, non-corrosive and nontoxic. However, investigation on CeO2 catalyzing coal combustion is rarely reported. In this work, catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in coal combustion was studied, in an attempt to provide theoretical foundation for developing new catalysis technologies."

"Limonite is a collective for iron hydroxide argillaceous materials. It is very difficult to be treated due to the wide variation in specific gravity and magnetism and the high argillization rate in the course of grinding and beneficiation. The iron ore in Huangmei, Hubei, China is the typical representative of limonite. If the limonite is processed using conventional physical beneficiation methods (e.g. magnetic separation, gravity separation, flocculation-desliming-flotation, or a combined process of the three), it can only be obtained an iron concentrate grade of 51.98% and an iron metal recovery of 86.64%. However, the technique of flash magnetic roasting-magnetic separation can improve the concentrate grade to 61.03%, iron recovery to 91.17%. This paper describes the tests of recovering limonite by flash magnetic roasting in detail.IntroductionLimonite (mFe2O3, nH2O)[1] is a general designation for hydrous iron hydroxides and argillaceous matters. Limonite is hard to be separated because of its complicated geneses, comparatively weak magnetism, nonuniform grain size and being easily slimed during grinding. So most small and medium enterprises sell deslimed limonite product which was dealt with just by simple methods of washing, magnetic separation or gravity separation and so on. In recent years with the iron ore prices soaring, significant progress was made in mineral processing research of limonite. Laboratory research and industrial test results showed that flocculation-desliming-flotation process and roasting-magnetic separation process are the two best methods to recover limonite till now. To compare these two methods, roasting-magnetic separation process is superior to flocculation-desliming-flotation process in aspects of beneficiation indexes and industrial stability."

"The Agrium Kapuskasing Phosphate Operation mines and processes up to 6,000 t/d of phosphate ore. Run-of-mine crushing to minus 6 inches is done in a toothed roll-crusher, while grinding is done in a SAG/ball mill circuit with no coarse recycle classification of the SAG mill discharge. The primary grinding mill is an 18 ft. diameter x 9 ft. EGL, 1500 HP variable speed SAG mill and the secondary mill is a 13 ft. diameter x 21 ft. long, 2000 HP fixed speed, ball mill. When hard ore was treated, the SAG mill restricted the tonnage that could be ground. When soft ore was treated, the ball mill and spiral classifier overloaded and restricted throughput.Recommendations from a plant benchmark and an ore hardness testing program, on how to better utilize installed energy in the Agrium SAG mill when treating soft ore, and how to obtain best results when treating hard ore, were checked in a pilot plant investigation in the 3 ft. diameter Starkey-PRO Pilot SAG Mill. Correlation between the ore hardness testing and the results from the 3’ Pilot SAG mill was very good. In addition, the work indicated the results that could be expected for the different ore types when using either smaller SAG discharge grates and/or a vibrating screen with 10 mesh square opening cloth.INTRODUCTIONAgrium Kapuskasing Phosphate Operation consists of a 6800 t/d open pit mine and a concentrator, near the Town of Kapuskasing in Northern Ontario. The two major ore types are sandy ore and cemented ore. Sandy ore is fine, soft and easy to grind in the SAG mill while cemented ore is harder, more blocky and difficult to grind in the SAG mill. The ratio of sandy to cemented ore in the deposit is thought to be in the order of 80:20 but can range as high as 5050, so it was important for the grinding circuit to have the ability to treat sandy ore alone."

Olivine contains higher MgO element, which can be added into blast furnace burden to improve slag stability and fluidity. Effect of calcined olivine and untreated olivine on low silicon pellet production process and quality was studied in this paper. The results shows, calcined olivine has no effect on bursting temperature of green pellet, however the bursting temperature of green pellet will decrease with increase of untreated olivine ratio. Untreated olivine has slight effect on green pellet strength than calcined olivine while the ratio is higher than 2%. The compressive strength of low silicon pellet will increase first and decrease afterwards with increases of calcined olivine ratio under firing temperature of 1250°C, whereas, the changing sequence is reverse fired under 1280°C. The result of untreated olivine pellet compressive strength is same as calcined olivine pellet. However, the compressive strength and metallurgical property of calcined olivine pellet is slightly higher than that of untreated olivine pellet under same condition.

The Powhatan No. 4 Mine is located in southeastern Ohio along the Ohio River in Monroe County. The mine produces approximately 3.2 million tons of steam coal annually from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam. The Pittsburgh No. 8 seam in this area dips to the southeast in varying amounts from 10-feet to 40-feet per mile. The seam is made up of a main bench coal (4' to 5f' ) containing several thin and variable partings and a rider ("roof") coal (0" to 18") which is separated from the main bench by a parting (0" to 18") that is reasonably consistent in occurrence and position. Strata overlying the seam varies from a bedded to nonbedded calcareous mudstone-claystone (6' to 12') in the north and east regions of the mine to a sandstone (Pittsburgh Sandstone C10' to 40'1 in the south and west regions. The Redstone Limestone (10' to 18' ) overlying the mudstone-claystone in the north and east thins and rises toward the area of sandstone deposition in the south and west. From its opening in April of 1971 until late 1981, primary roof support in the long-1 ived entries at Quarto Mining Company's Powhatan No. 4 Mine had been achieved with 8-foot and 10-foot. 518-inch mechanical roof bolts using a Single expansion shell. These bolts were installed so that the expansion shell achieved a competent anchorage in the limestone. However, as the mine developed westward, the limestone began to trend upward becoming inaccessible as an anchorage medium at the 8-foot and 10-foot horizons. Anchorage achieved in the underlying mudstone-claystone strata was failure-prone due to weathering (after exposure to air and moisture) and inconsistencies in the anchorage horizon, leading to an increase in the incidence of reportable roof falls at the mine. Responding to the threat to safety and productivity posed by the increase in roof falls. Mine Management through its Safety and Engineering Departments, sought solutions to the problem. In seeking a solution to the problem, the safest and en engineering groups examined the reportable roof falls to determine the cause of those failures. Their examination pinpointed two items which were found to be a common link in the majority of those falls; namely, anchor integrity and geologic trends. Analysis of the roof falls indicated that due to effects of air and moisture on the anchoraae zones in the mudstones and clay- itones, the integrity of the anchorage over time could not be maintained. Geologic trends noted included the upward trend of the -main limestone as mining progressed westward, inconsistencies in the amount of roof coal and draw slate in the immediate mine roof and increasing evidence of heavily slickensided immediate mine roof. In the absence of the protective barrier provided by the roof coal, the immediate strata and particularly the draw slate, is susceptible to deterioration due to the weathering effects of air and moisture and thus is prone to "eat out" around the roof bolts and cause roof falls. The presence of heavily slickensided roof creates a need for increased contact surface such as that provided by plank and header blocks to aid in holding up the roof and tends to make the behavior of such roof very unpredictable. Having determined the causes of the roof falls. Mine Management began to identify the kind of roof support which would best solve these problems, while at the same time providing the mine with a safe, cost effective and efficient roof support system. This paper will provide an analysis of how this decision was reached, the background that was researched to aid in forming the decision, the considerations that played key roles in the formulation of the plan, the mechanics of following through and implementing the new roof support system, and an assessment of the resultant gains in safety, productivity and improved costs derived from the implementation of the new roof support system.

"Training Program at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttar:. ConcentratorA formal training program for mill operators is being developed and employed at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Concentrator. The program was set up to fulfil the needs created by a shortage of skilled reliable labour, a 200% turnover of personnel within the first six months of operation and the rapid advances in mineral processing technology. All new employees are introduced into the Mill Department through an orientation program designed to familiarize them with the operation of the plant. All training and orientation of new employees is the responsibility of a. small training section consisting of two training foremen and one assistant. Using a combination of classroom and supervised on the job training, the training times have been cut by at least one half. High operating standards have been set and are maintained through the use of detailed manuals for each work area and competent instruction at all operating levels. The major portion of training costs arise from the salaries of the training staff but are negligible when compared to the improved recoveries, smaller turnover and less downtime. Government assistance is available to all industrial employers to offset the costs of training employees."

The Akita Zinc Company is the only refinery which produces hematite from the iron content in the zinc leach residue. The Akita Hematite Process consists of five stages, which are SO2 pressure leaching, the first neutralization stage, the de-arsenic process, the second neutralization stage and pressure hematite precipitation. In order to strengthen its cost competitiveness and stabilize its operation, the Akita Hematite Process has been modified continuously. Most recently, two process modifications were carried out. The first was an improved ability to maintain a lower arsenic concentration in the de-arsenic process, and the second was an increased throughput in the hematite precipitation autoclave. The details of these recent changes in the Akita Hematite Process are presented in this paper.

The presence of dust and fume suspended in the freeboard region is a common feature of the operation of direct current (DC) plasma smelting furnaces. This occurs primarily as a result of the use of fine feed materials together with the open-arc, open-bath operation of such smelters, and is exacerbated by the high velocities and turbulent mixing of the gas in the vicinity of the arc jet. Dust and fume losses into the furnace off-gas system can be significant in some cases and may have economic, operational, and environmental impacts on the process. A computational modelling study is presented in which the concentration of dust material was considered as a continuous field subject to a governing partial differential equation. Settling behaviour was calculated as a function of particle size, local gas/plasma temperature, and other physical properties. Development of the coupling between the concentration field and a magneto-hydrodynamic description of the arc is shown, and the resulting models were used to compute various aspects of the behaviour of the concentration field in the arc region for a variety of furnace conditions. Time-averaged as well as transient models of the arc were used to generate the results presented. Qualitative case studies produced several practical suggestions for furnace operation, including increased dust capture by the bath when feed ports are located closer to the electrode, and the possible effects of feed segregation in the furnace freeboard based on dust particle size and density.

Paper and paperboard manufacturers need to quantify the carbon footprint and environmental impact of their products to satisfy market, social and government demands. Coated paper products contain minerals, such as kaolin and calcium carbonate, at significant levels; some coated paper grades have mineral contents as high as 45% by weight. Some uncoated paper has no mineral content, but most uncoated paper contains some mineral to improve appearance, process efficiency and cost. Super-calendared paper grades can contain levels of mineral up to 35% by weight. This paper describes how to calculate the carbon footprint of kaolin and calcium carbonate minerals used for white pigments. The carbon footprint of these minerals strongly correlates to the primary energy sources, final product form and energy used to calcine kaolin and lime. Kaolin and calcium carbonate pigments have a favorable impact on the carbon footprint of paper and paperboard products by directly substituting for fiber and by reducing the energy needed for paper making. Effective maintenance planning is vital for coal mining operations, where haul truck fleets directly determine production continuity. This study presents a discrete event simulation (DES) model for evaluating maintenance strategies under multiple failure modes and their interdependencies. The model integrates corrective, periodic preventive, and opportunistic maintenance, dynamically updating equipment lifetimes through probabilistic time-betweenfailure and time-to-repair distributions. Applied to a fivetruck coal haulage fleet over a one-year horizon, results show that periodic preventive maintenance delivers the highest availability (76%) under unconstrained conditions, slightly outperforming corrective-only maintenance (75%). Opportunistic and integrated approaches performed worse (68% and 69%), reflecting redundancy from overlapping interventions. These findings suggest that structured preventive programs provide the most reliable outcomes when costs and resources are not limiting. The DES framework serves as a baseline for future models incorporating cost, spare parts logistics, and workforce availability, supporting robust maintenance planning in coal mining operations.

There is no single factor that determines the appropriate capacity for a mining project. It is driven by the size of the resource, the capacity of the market, the availability of capital, the availability of power, the availability of water, and a myriad of other considerations. There is also no single solution to the question of how big the project should be. However, to develop a project, the study team needs to select the configuration options that it regards as the best for the project. To be able to make this selection, the study team should consider the range of available options and do so at a level of detail that gives it confidence in the conclusion but does not lead to multiple detailed design exercises. Having considered the range of options, and with a clear definition of the project owner’s objectives and constraints, the work to be carried into feasibility studies can be focused appropriately. This paper discusses the process of completing strategic mine planning to identify project configuration options to assist in the selection of the processing plant throughput rate (Capacity Study) for a large greenfield open pit mine. The processes described in this paper allow for the basis of design to be set for subsequent studies that meets the objectives at a risk profile acceptable to the owner.

SABC circuits have gained widespread attention within China, and are being gradually applied to many mines. However, the domestic knowledge of comminution process is still relatively basic, and the design and production management of the application of SABC technology lack guidance of scientific theories. This research project focuses on the Phase I SABC milling circuits of Wu Shan Porphyry copper mine. Targeting the design and operation problems of existing process and circuit, and without increased investment and alterations in equipment, the new technologies will combine ordinary crushing and grinding theories as theoretical guidance, and borrow JK Simulation Software (JKSimMet) for analysis in order to optimize the comminution process, efficiently allocate production output and energy consumption, eventually resulting in increased production and energy efficiency. Using JKSimMet Simulation Software, and combining theoretical optimizing and practical production techniques, as well as the on-site situation, the eventual SABC comminution process and circuit optimization plan is: increasing the grinding Ball charge from 8% to 10% v/v in the SAG mill; Setting the Ball charge in the Ball mill to 27% v/v and the maximum operating power draw to 5 800kW; replacing the HP Series crusher with a TRIO TC84 crusher, which is without a power controller, and adding a pebble bin. The final optimization result is: Maximum system processing capacity increased between 20%-26.7%, specific energy consumption reduced by more 2.0 kWh/t, creating an economic benefit of over 300 million RMB, thus achieving the goal of increased production, reduced energy consumption, and improved profitability.

The stability of gateroad pillars is crucial in deep-cover longwall mining, especially during transitions to wider panel layouts. This study evaluates the transition from a 700-foot to a 1,000-foot panel layout with an inter-panel barrier in a deep-cover longwall mine in Southwestern Virginia to identify a configuration that enhances stability and reduces operational risks. Using the LaModel program, three pillar configurations were simulated to assess their performance based on stress distributions and pillar safety factors. These included the previously used 4-Entry Yield-Abutment-Yield layout, the current 3-Entry Yield-Abutment layout with a 220-ft inter-panel barrier, and the proposed 3-Entry Yield-Yield layout with a 320-ft inter-panel barrier. The findings of this study suggest that the proposed 3-Entry Yield-Yield pillar layout is more effective in managing stresses in deep-cover mining environments. By optimizing pillar placement and improving load management, this layout could positively impact mineworker safety and health. The study underscores the importance of advanced simulation tools in developing innovative solutions to address the challenges of modern longwall mining operations.

The Mt Wright underground mine (MTW) is located near the town of Ravenswood in north Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited.The Mt Wright mine has gone through many stages, from the conception and implementation of the world first ‘sub-level shrinkage’ stoping (SLS) with continuous fill mining method in 2010, through to steady state production. These have been outlined in detail in papers presented by Mackay (2011) and Mackay, Long and Koen (2014) at previous Underground Operators Conferences.Since the last paper was presented, MTW has experienced significant change in two key areas.The first significant change was the discovery of a previously unknown hazard in the form of flat rilling events (FREs) from closed drawpoints (DPs). These events are believed to be unique to MTW and pose a significant risk to both the safety of personnel and the business as a whole. The paper will discuss this hazard and the evolution of the controls and practices that have been introduced to mitigate the risk posed by the identified hazards. The material involved in these events is extremely dry, fine and hot.The second significant change is an altered stress regime bought on in part by a change in the production front orientation and a general deterioration in ground conditions in some areas of the mine. This has caused some production interruptions at MTW. The second half of the paper will describe the challenges encountered, the mechanisms behind these challenges and the strategies implemented to safely return MTW production to planned levels.It is believed that other operations can learn from the issues mentioned above, and the paper has been written with this in mind.`CITATION:Long, S, Carnovale, D and Louwrens, L, 2017. "Modelling and optimization techniques used in the operation of the Detour Lake Mine leach circuit are contrasted to a 1973 review of contemporary techniques used by a major gold producer. The leach circuit at the Detour Lake Mine was modelled using a full factorial Design of Experiment of stirred tank reactor leach tests using circuit feed. Contour plots of extraction were applied in the plant to optimize addition rates of cyanide and the newly-commissioned lead nitrate system. Contour plot sections were used to understand the impact of sulphur in circuit feed at different operating dissolved oxygen concentrations. The 1973 review paper offers insight into industrially-applied modelling and optimization techniques. In particular, a mathematical model of plant data was developed using multilinear stepwise regression analysis. The model was presented using graphical representations available at the time and applied to optimize the rates of cyanide addition. Off-the-shelf software solutions of today allow mineral processors to quickly and easily visualize data, allowing them to re-allocate time and resources spent processing data to generating raw data and extracting actionable information.IntroductionModelling and optimization in mineral processing is the art of reducing reality through judicious use of assumptions to understand a process and leverage this knowledge to engineer practical solutions to metallurgical problems. Data analysis is at the core of this enterprise.While this paper showcases the modelling work done at the Detour Lake Mine (DLM), the primary objective is to pause and reflect on how far the field has progressed since the 1970’s. A snapshot of state-of-the-art gold cyanidation modelling at that time is a review paper of the Anglo American Group’s capabilities (Brittan & van Vuuren, 1973). The objective of this paper is not a play-by-play of the evolution of modelling and optimization since that time. Rather, it is a comparison of the field at two points in time.In 2016, DLM undertook an extensive bench-scale leach circuit modelling program to better understand the impact of cyanide, dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate, grind size, density, and pH on gold cyanidation (Fournier, 2016). Two major capital expenditure projects were anticipated for 2017: improvements to oxygen control and a lead nitrate distribution system. While the lead nitrate system was planned for construction, the design parameters had not yet been selected. Following the development of the model, plant trials were executed to validate aspects of the model and the methodology was expanded to address other plant issues, in particular the effect of talc chlorite and pyrrhotite in leach feed.The variables of the bench-scale study are summarized in Table 1. Dependent variables were varied using a full factorial design of experiment with two repetitions for each test condition, yielding a total of 300 tests. Test order was randomized to eliminate bias from independent variables."

By leveraging design principles, mining companies can ensure that their R&D initiatives are responsive to evolving challenges and opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Against this backdrop, the project aims to address the pressing challenges associated with sustainability and circular economy in the mining industry. Through the development of R&D roadmaps and the application of a design-led methodology, the project seeks to identify innovative solutions for enhancing resource efficiency, minimising environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable practices within mining operations. This paper highlights the collaborative efforts among Isle, the mining industry, and water utilities, which have yielded tangible benefits. The study demonstrates how the outcomes from the roadmaps outlined below effectively align research with strategic objectives, fostering innovation to address pressing challenges.

Laterite projects are found in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. As a result severe meteorological situations accompany such projects, often in regions of high seismic activity and political uncertainty. Frequently, socio-economic development supported by political interest is a major driver for development, while environmental protection imposes numerous stresses on the project. This paper will review and examine the many social, environmental, technical and financial issues that a mining and extraction process is subject to during development. The options that must be evaluated will be discussed in the context of sustainable development. Issues of project standards and cultural impact through to long-term issues such as greenhouse gasses and climate change will be assessed in redirecting project environmental norms. Although a rationale for sustainable project can be developed many long- term uncertainties around issues remain. [During the last few years, the necessity for development work has been generally recognized by executives throughout the oil industry, resulting in greatly accelerated progress and the adoption of many noteworthy improvements in refining methods and equipment. Several years ago, the Associated Oil Co. decided to improve distillation methods with the object of reducing refining costs. This extremely interesting work was entrusted to the writer, and W. S. James, now Chief of Research for Studebaker Corpn. of America, was selected as the principal collaborator. The latter contributed much during his two years with the Associated Oil Co., to the development work that has followed. The writer extends to the Associated Oil Co. his appreciation for permission to disclose the details of distilling equipment. In petroleum refining the principal requisites of good economics are the separation of high-priced distillates from those of lower price; maxi-mum yield of any desired distillate; lowest capital investment in refining equipment; lowest cost of operation and maintenance, and the best adaptability and flexibility of the same refinery equipment for handling crudes of widely varying characteristics. The first two items mentioned, separation and yields of distillates are determined by efficiency of fractionating equipment,. Discussion in this paper is chiefly concerned with oil-heating equipment, combustion and furl economy. It has long been well known that velocity plays a very important part in all heat transfer systems. Any betterment in specific transfer. rates in such systems must. always involve velocity. Realizing this fact, IV decided to adopt as a basic principle, the employment of energy to impart velocity required for high transfer rates through a heating diaphragm, and our method of modernizing obsolete shell stills is founded on this principle. Mechanical energy is usually cheap and its rational rspcntliture is returned in the form of greatly increased heat transfer rates, on both oil and gas sides of the sheet. Certainly there is nothing new in this principle, the only novelty being that of our peculiar method of application On the oil side (Fig. I) use is made of a centrifugal pump to jet the oil against the heated sheet thereby creating a high velocity sheet flow over the entire fired area. Introduction The need for water is fundamental to every minerals processing operation. Though this may sound rather elementary, it is one area that cannot be over- looked. Frank C. Quinn in his paper entitled "Water Is Water Is Water" (1967) said, "but it isn't as simple as that. Very often research is slowed down and production is hampered because of a lack of appreciation for the behavior of water." The quantity of water needed for any operation is determined from bench and pilot plant testing. The quality required by the process for both fresh and reuse water is also established during these two testing phases. Quinn's statements are true whether the process involves the paper industry, the minerals industry, or any other industry. It is not the author's intent to cover water quality, quantity, or re- cycle in specific terms, but to provide the reader with a general outline of the topic with reference to several valuable sources of information. The first part of the chapter will cover several of the areas that have been de- tailed by others and also provide a list of reference sources. The references at the end of the chapter are not all inclusive but will provide a good starting point. In the second part of the chapter, a detailed description, with flowsheet illustrations, is pro- vided on the evolution of the reclaim (reuse) water system at the Tilden concentrator. Mineral Industry Water Needs Beresford and Edler (1978) surmnarized the minerals industry's need for water this way: "minerals are necessary to a modern complex technological society. The minerals industry, while its water needs are relatively minor compared to large users such as agriculture, nevertheless requires a large quantity of water to carry out daily operations from mining to final product refining." In 1973 total water use in the United States was estimated at 15.14 billion cubic meters (4 trillion gallons) for the minerals industry. Of this, about 69% was recirculated within the system. In 1982 Watt and Horton stated that the percent of recycled water in the minerals industry had improved to 73%, showing the minerals industry is an efficient user of water and that steady improvement in water recycling is something the minerals industry can look to with pride. The percent of water needed by the United States' minerals industry was estimated in 1962 to be about 2% of the total water required by industry
