"Sensor-based sorting technologies have potential to pre-concentrate low grade subeconomic ores through discarding the barren waste particles. However, the inability of sensors to accurately discriminate ore from waste is a barrier to prevent their wide applications. The present study focuses on the development of more intelligent sensing systems by using correlation and regression analysis of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor responses on the copper ore samples obtained from Chile. The responses obtained through XRF scanning were reported both in the form of counts and the grades of elements. Linear and multiple linear correlation analyses were made between the XRF counts and the copper grades obtained through chemical analysis. Both the heterogeneity of the ore particles and the matrix effect in the XRF measurement are discussed in the study.INTRODUCTIONSorting can not only discard waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recover metal bearing ore particles that would be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include reduced energy consumption, water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Knapp, Neubert, Schropp, & Wotruba, 2014; Kobzev, 2014; Lessard, de Bakker, & McHugh, 2014; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013). X-ray fluorescence belongs to sensor-based sorting technologies and Xrays are a high energy-high frequency form of electromagnetic radiation inhabiting the region between the ultraviolet radiation and gamma rays (Shackley, 2011). Recent XRF sorting studies on low grade copper ores were carried out at MineSense Technologies Ltd. aimed at increasing the capacity related to improving the understanding of ore heterogeneity as the basis for developing semi-bulk or bulk sorting systems (MineSense Technologies Ltd., 2016)."

The mineralogy of the Joe Mann mine differs from that of other deposits of the Chibougamau area that are exploited by Les Mines Camchib Inc.. It is characterized by very fine first generation gold and very coarse second generation electrurn. Successful milling required adjustments of the processing flowsheet, which includes gravity, flotation, and cyanidation. A study of coarse gold liberation in the gravity/grinding circuit is described. Modifications to the flotation circuit and the reconditioning of a small capacity cyanidation circuit are presented. As a result of the circuit modifications, gold recovery increased from 65 to 81% in flotation and cyanidation. Overall gold recovery increased from 77% to 88-89%. These improvements are mostly attibutable to the recovery of -10 urn gold, whose presence in the Joe Mann ore and original circuit tails had been identified by process mineralogy.

The purpose of the contract was to develop an improved coal mine dust sampler whose electrical-to-mechanical energy conversion efficiency would be superior to that of the presently available equipment. The electrical to (pressure) X (volume) conversion efficiency directly affects the size and weight of the air samplers. At least half of the mass of present equipment is composed of the rechargeable batteries. Any increase in efficiency will allow this mass to be reduced or the flow rote to be increased.

Selective extraction through leaching of an amorphous slag obtained from a base metal smelter plant in Botswana is investigated in this paper, where the main objective is to optimise the experimental variables that would result in the maximum selective extraction of the three base metals (Ni, Cu and Co) from the slag waste. Mineralogical tests showed that the sample is composed mainly of fayalite (Fe2SiO4), with a total entrapped metal sulphides content of about 1.0 wt.% occurring as fine occlusions in the fayalite phase. In our experimental program, we compare the effectiveness of two common leaching techniques. In the first method, we use sulphuric acid to carry out atmospheric beaker leaching tests, and in the second method we use high pressure oxidative leaching. The effects of acid concentration, oxidant addition/oxygen partial pressure and pulp density on metal dissolution rate are examined. The optimal Ni, Cu, Co extractions of 80.5%, 81.9 and 98% respectively were obtained under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions (150 oC, 0.6 M H2SO4, 0.5 MPa O2), with substantially low dissolved Fe of 9.6%, the majority of which was removed as jarosite in the residue. Atmospheric beaker leaching yielded poor extractions of Ni below 40% when sulphuric acid combined with hydrogen peroxide (1.0 M and 0.6 M respectively, 65 oC) were used for leaching, while Fe, Cu and Co dissolutions were each about 80%. Therefore, using high pressure oxidative leaching provides a possibility to effectively extract Ni, Cu and Co while producing an environmentally benign residue, thus alleviating the current adverse environmental issues associated with the abandoned smelter slag. The experience developing a supervisory control and information systems in a SX pilot plant is presented. The plant is located at the Process Control Laboratory, Santa Maria University, in Chile. In this work, the problem of controlling this process is discussed and related literature is briefly reviewed. Then, an innovative control scheme organized in three levels, local, hydrodynamic, and metallurgical supervisory controls is presented in an architecture including field controllers, PLC, and PC networks. Operating decisions in the metallurgical supervisory control are taken with incomplete information from on-stream analyzers. The control proposed is based on metal and acid concentration predictions of intermediate and exiting streams through the use of dynamic and static models and flow rates and input concentration measurements. Preliminary results are presented. The main objectives are to develop and test intelligent techniques in a hybrid system, and to study measurement and supervisory control problems. It is expected to produce reliable results that will contribute to improve the efficiency of this emerging and important process.

Planning the primary development of a mineral deposit usually is done only once during the life of a mine. As a consequence, not optimizing the primary development of a mineral deposit can cause disadvantages over the whole life of a mine and can lead to higher costs. As a contribution to an improved primary development design procedure beyond the already existing work a study of the identification and quantification of the influence of parameters on primary development based on operational data from working mining operations has been completed. Based upon such a quantification of the influence of parameters a sequenced decision model was developed, that enables to develop an initial concept for the design of the accesses from the surface based upon a few critical parameters. Such a model will not replace detailed planning work within a feasibility study, but it is intended to reduce the amount of planning efforts at an early project stage through providing information what are most likely economic solutions, based on simple rules.

A unique type of grinding mill liner has been developed by Waagner-Biro A.G. of Austria. This liner system, termed an angular spiral lining (.ESL), was, successfully tested by Magma Copper Company's San Manuel concentrator in both their 10 Ft x 10 Ft (3.05m x 3.05m) and 12 Ft, 6 In x 14 Ft (3.81m x 4.27m) grate discharge wet grinding ball mills. Magma Copper's savings in power and grinding balls justified conversion of more than half of their twenty-six ball mills to the ESL system.1,2 The ASL system was provided by the Capitol Castings Division of Midland Ross Corporation, the exclusive licensee for such conversions. Capitol Castings proposed the following as expected benefits from installation of an ASL system in an 18 Ft x 21 Ft (5.49m x 6.40m) overflow discharge wet grinding ball mill at the Pinto Valley Operation of Cities Service Company: "(a) Reduction of power consumption per ton of ore milled = 12%, (b) Increased throughput = 6%, (c) Reduction of ball consumption = 6%."

Dwindling economic deposits of rutile (TiO2) prompted research on recovering it from secondary sources. One such resource is in Southwestern Turkey feldspar mining rejects that contain 5%-6% TiO2 mostly rutile. Previous studies could only upgrade the TiO2 to 36% TiO2 grade, claiming that the leftover flotation reagents on the surfaces of rutile and host minerals detrimentally affected upgrading of the rutile. As a potential remedy to this concern, a laboratory sample (from an operating feldspar mine in Milas, Turkey) was first caustic scrubbed, then air calcined at 400°C to evaporate the oily reagents. Subsequent physical separation of rutile included wet screening, gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation technologies. Such processes indeed improved the grade of the rutile concentrate up to 83 % TiO2 Low recovery of the TiO2 (<20%), was attributed to lack of full liberation of rutile, even at 125x44 micron range; interference with impurity minerals such as sphene and zircon; and simply the process inefficiency in upgrading the fine grains through conventional separation technologies for heavy minerals.

An orebody is a mining company&apos;s greatest asset; without it there can be no mine. Yet, by the very nature of the industry, orebodies are wasting assets whose progressive depletion must be balanced by continued discovery of new ore to enable both the industry to survive and the raw material demands of society to be satisfied. Although mineral exploration may be viewed as any activity which leads to the creation of investment opportunities in the mineral industry, ultimately new ore can only be generated through discovery. The process leading to discovery may involve a long chain of independent and interdependent events. It will almost always be repetitious and require the examination of many prospects or trials before the goal, a commercially successful discovery, is satisfied. Long term survival of a mining company through regular discovery of new ore, requires a continued commitment of funds and effort to mineral exploration.

Carbon in the form of coke is used as a reactant in various chemical and metallurgical processes, The high cost of by-product coke along with its periodic lack of availability and high investment necessary for additional by-product recovery facilities indicate the need for a low-cost production unit based on a new procedure for coke manufacture, Traveling-grate coking-stokers were developed by Shawinigan Chemicals Ltd. to produce coke required for carbide manufacture, They were adapted to kilns so that the hot volatile gases could be used for lime burning, Their operation has been described in various patent disclosures (1, 2, 3), and their application to rotary lime burning kilns has been described by Andersen (4). Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

It is the purpose of this paper to examine a number of the recent developments in powder metallurgy, being most concerned with those which are yet to prove themselves rather than those which have achieved commercial maturity. "The Jameson Cell is one of the choices of flotation machine in coal, base metal processing and other specialist applications. This paper determines the effect on vacuum pressure and bubble size of two design variables, orifice size and downcomer length, and the operating variable air-to-water (AWR) ratio. The main findings are: orifice size and downcomer length impact the vacuum but have limited effect on bubble size; AWR < 1 favours high vacuum, conditions are identified where vacuum is maintained at AWR > 1, and water flowrate has slightly greater impact on bubble size than air flowrate.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation, the most common technique for mineral separation, has been in use for over a century. The process takes advantage of the difference in wettability of mineral surfaces to achieve the separation of valuable minerals from non-valuable minerals, or gangue. Numerous flotation machines have been invented and patented over the years. The Jameson Cell, invented by Professor Graeme Jameson in the late 1980s, is one successful example. First trialed at Mount Isa Mines (Queensland, Australia), Jameson Cells have been installed at operations around the world for the recovery of fine coal (Mohanty and Honakeri, 1999; Cowburn et al., 2006; Hacifazlioglu and Toroglu, 2007; Uçurum 2009), minerals of copper (Farr 1992; Atkinson et al., 1993; Harbort et al., 1997), lead/zinc (Rohner, 1993; Munro, 2003) and gold (Bennett et al., 2012; Lauder et al., 2003), and in water treatment (Yan and Jameson, 2004), solvent extraction de-oiling (Miller and Readett, 1992; Miller et al., 1997; Harbort et al., 2003; Young et al., 2006), oil sands processing (Neiman et al., 2012), and various food industries (Brenneman, 2014). One of the largest units is the 650 cm diameter separation tank with 24 downcomers installed in an Anglo American operation (Osborne and Euston, 2015). Scale up is relatively straightforward: to increase capacity the number of downcomers is increased with corresponding increase in size of separation tank.The Jameson Cell comprises two main parts: a vertical tube (downcomer) which provides self-aspiration and intense bubble-particles contact, and a (separation) tank where particle-bubble aggregates disengage from the pulp. The intense bubble/slurry mixing in the downcomer with air holdups reaching 60% (Marchese et al., 1992) accelerates particle collection enabling the greatly reduced cell volume compared with mechanical flotation cells and columns. The disengagement of the particle-loaded bubbles from the slurry in the separation tank is usually aided by addition of washwater."

Diamond films have been successfully formed in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system from several gas mixtures: CH,-H,, C2112-112, and C2112-112-02&apos; Our previous thermodynamic study indicated that the substrate temperature could be lowered by the presence of oxygen species at moderate system pressures (0.3-0.5 atm) and that higher volumetric growth rates required a high temperature source and a moderate pressure system in CVD processing. The principal experimental results were consistent with the thermodynamic predictions. The deposited films were characterized by laser Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The films were well faceted and uniform, with the growth rates over 10 pm/hr on molybdenum substrates. The crystal size ranged between 1 and 2 microns for a two hour experiment. It was possible to decrease the substrate temperature to below 800 °C in this system.

IT can be truly stated that no branch of the engineering industry has progressed more rapidly in the last few years than that of welding. In spite of depressed economic conditions, this industry has continued to advance along scientific lines, replacing the old hit-and-miss method of welding. The development work is intensive, and increased activity is recorded in every sphere of the industry, new applications of existing methods, together with new processes, being added to those already proved in practice. The general acceptance of the welding processes can be measured by their utilization as a manufacturing tool in the metal-working industries. Many manufacturers have partially or wholly adopted welding. These concerns have on their staffs welding specialists, design engineers, and metallurgists, who are qualified to design and supervise the manufacture of welded parts, at a considerable saving to the purchaser. The steady, consistent, and sound growth of welding is based upon investigation of the fundamentals of the various processes, together with their proper application. The classification of welding processes varies in different countries. In Europe, they are divided into two main classes, namely, heterogenous and autogenous. In the former, the parts are joined, as a ruler without melting the edges, and by using as filler a metal different from that of the object welded. Such welding differs from soldering and brazing in that higher temperatures are required to effect the union of the parts. In autogenous welding, the parts are joined by melting of the edges, with or without the addition of a material similar to the parts being joined.

Yeast-derived bola-amphiphiles have attracted considerable attention for their applications in various industrial sectors in recent years. However, only a few studies on this class of surfactant were reported to be relevant to mineral processing applications. In this paper, one of the novel surfactants, acidic glucolipid obtained from Candida bombicola sophorolipids and modified by using Penicillium decumbens naringinase substrate has been evaluated for its interaction with chalcocite and calcite minerals because of a new Cu-ore Nussir deposit in Norway containing calcite impurity. The interaction of glucolipid biosurfactant with copper sulphide and carbonate minerals was investigated with zeta potential, adsorption and FTIR studies, and also by Hallimond tube and bench scale flotation tests using pure minerals and Nussir copper ore, respectively. The results illustrate collector adsorption and flotation of copper sulfides at neutral pH. The bench-scale flotation results demonstrate that copper sulphides can be selectively floated from carbonate and silicate gangue minerals. This study underlines the glycolipid’s high potential for its use as collector for flotation of valuable copper sulphide minerals. Keywords: Flotation, biosurfactants, adsorption

"Developing markets for western metallurgical coal have continued to stimulate considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain foothills and to influence major segments of a wide-ranging carbonization R&D pro-gram. Adjunct studies have included expanded petrographie investigations.Coal preparation has• been principally directed toward utilization of prepared small coal and was, like much of the year's combustion work, strongly influenced by concern over atmospheric pollution. Particular attention has been given to desulphurization and to the suppression of pollutants in combustion systems.In the area of non-fuel utilization of coal, interest has centered on plant nutrients and on a series of coal-based carbons which, inter alia, possess utility as filtration media.Other projects included the development of improved sampling and analytical methods, investigations into the effect of storage on coal proper-ties and R&D in solids pipelining. In addition, a significant volume of basic 'uncommitted' research has been maintained."

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. A paper describing the Noranda smelter was presented at the 1930 annual meeting of the Institute (1). A lacer article appeared in the Trans-actions of the A.I.M.&M.E. in 1933. Since that time there have been many changes and improvements in plant operation and it is the abject of this paper to give an account of developments up to the beginning of 1939. The Noranda smelter was built originally for a capacity of 30,000 tons a month. At present, the average tonnage being treated is 110,000 tons a month, the tonnage of custom ores alone amounting to almost the total rated capacity of the original plant. This increase has been accomplished by increasing the capacity of the reverberatory furnaces from 700 tons of solid charge per furnace day in 1928 to 1,500 tons per day at the present time. In 1935, it appeared chat the limit of furnace capacity had been reached at about 1,300 tons of charge per day because of the short life of the sprung silica arches. However, the adoption of the suspended magnesite roof, which had been developed at the Flin Flou smelter of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, overcame this difficulty and it is believed that the limit of the capacity of the present reverberarory furnaces has not been reached. A brief account of the changes to equipment in the various departments will be given, followed by a description of the more important features of present smelter practice.

"Garlic peel was used as the raw material to synthesize the biosorbent for the selective recovery of precious metals from the acid chloride solution. Garlic peel is rich in carboxyl-, amino- and thiol-groups, has the potential of exhibiting high affinity to Au(III) when appropriate chemical modification process was employed. Here in the present study, the biosorbent was prepared by cross-linking garlic peel particles with concentrated sulfuric acid. Adsorption tests for mixing different metal ions such as Au(III), Fe(III), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) from various concentrations of hydrochloric acid media indicated that Au(III) was selectively adsorbed on the cross-linked garlic peel gel over the other coexisting base metal ions investigated. The crosslinking mechanism and selective adsorption of Au(III) were also investigated briefly.IntroductionPrecious metals are quite popularly applied in the modern industries such as jewelry, electronics and electrical devices, catalysts in chemical industry, etc. While their high values, limited deposit and quite large demand in industry makes its recovery from the industrial wastes, typically e-wastes, quite necessary. Actually, many techniques have been developed to recycle and recover the precious metals from various industrial wastes effectively in last decades, but the cleaning and ecofriendly processes are still seriously scarce [1]. Taking into account of the typical recovery processes using cyanide lixiviant in the alkaline media, or aqua regia, followed by the further recovery process using activated carbon adsorption or cementation with zinc, iron or aluminum plate or powder, though they both are quite effective recovery processes, if considering the special requirements on safety and ecofriendliness for the modern hydrometallurgical processes, various improved or novel extraction processes are greatly demanded [2]. Recently, the biosorption technology applied to the recover precious metals in the hydrometallurgical process has become a concern [3,4]. Inoue’s research group made great progress in the recovery of precious metals such as gold, palladium and platinum from the e-wastes such as spent mobile phone by using biosorption from the hydrochloric acid media [5,6]. This new hydrometallurgical process exhibits the prominent advantages of being cost-effective for its short process, easy operation and near-zero emission. In the above recycling process for e-wastes treatment, the preparation of biosorbents is the key and backbone of the whole recovery process. For this purpose, they developed a series of suitable sorbents for precious metals recovery by using the tanning-based or cellulose-based biomass such as persimmon peel, grape peel, orange juicing residue, waste cotton, waste paper through the crosslinking process with concentrated sulfuric acid and relative chemical modification processes [7-10]. In the present study, we also applied this technique to prepare the biosorbent of precious metal uptaking by using garlic peels as the raw materials, and investigated the adsorption properties of such-obtained gel in the hydrochloric acid media."

"The cPlant is a modular flotation plant which has been designed to minimize capital expenditure and risk. The plant is based on a number of standard modules, for both flotation and ancillary equipment, which can be configured to give the required flowsheet for the ore being treated. All of these modules can be rapidly deployed and erected onsite, minimizing not only engineering time and site preparation but reducing the time taken to get the plant up and generating revenue. Given the paradigm shift in flotation circuit design that has been employed in the cPlant it may allow smaller, previously uneconomic deposits to be exploited and create a more cost efficient upgrade route for existing plants. This paper introduces the cPlant and presents a case study comparing EPC cost and development timing of a cPlant against a traditional flotation circuit design. INTRODUCTION In the development of any mining project the cost associated with process plant engineering, equipment procurement and installation can affect the financial viability of a project. This is of special significance for smaller scale mining projects which perhaps don’t have the mine-life or revenue generation to justify the payback on a modern processing facility. Listening to customer feedback and understanding the challenges that small to mid-sized projects can face lead Outotec to the development of the cPlant. Modularization of mineral processing plants isn’t a new idea with a number of examples being reported in literature for gravity gold (Cabot, Trudel and Cabot, 2001; Gray et al., 2006), dense medium separation (September and Abate, 2006) and even hydrometallurgy (Saario et al., 2013). All these plants have been developed to try to improve on the traditional economics associated with fixed processing plants. Using standardized modules to construct a plant reduces engineering time and design costs which can both be beneficial to the outcome of a project. In addition the modular nature of the plant lends itself to transport to remote sites and rapid installation with only minimal site preparation required. A plant of modular design also has several other advantages over its conventional cousins. Firstly it is relatively easy to expand by duplicating existing modules. Secondly the modules can be treated as building blocks for the process and rearranged if a change in conditions requires flowsheet adjustment. Thirdly, there is potential to disassemble and remove the modular units at the end of the mine life. The ability to easily disassemble, re-pack and transport the plant to a new location not only is important to the long term environmental footprint of an operation but can also be seen as a bonus to an operator that has a number of small ore deposits. If applied in this way modular plants have the potential to create a whole new operating model for previously unviable ore deposits."
