A geophysical technique of rock mass assessment for engineering purposes is being investigated and shows positive correlation with direct structural logging and mapping techniques for the detection of major geological features. The technique is cross-hole acoustic surveying incorporating high speed signal averaging, with a maximum hole separation in excess of 30 metres in hard unfractured rock masses. The bulk of the field test work was carried out in open stopes in the copper ore bodies of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The investigation forms part of an integrated study of blasting in mining, aiming for fragmentation control through blast design modification. The rock quality factor, Q, is presented as a blasting index and can be determined for a significant portion of a production stope.

Preparative Continuous Annular Chromatography, or P-CAC, is an innovative separation technology, a unique approach to high-performance chromatography for the separation of PGM component mixtures from solutions. P-CAC consists of inlet/distribution head and outer/inner cylinders, and bottom plate/fraction-collection as well. P-CAC has been applied in biotechnological and pharmaceutical downstream processing. This was the first time to explore an efficient PGM separation and recovery at the Copper Refinery. Laboratory trials with using a chloride solution for raffination for PGM are described and the tests results are presented in this paper.

With the increase of proportion of biochar(without modified) replacing coke breeze, the physical strength of sinter decreases due to the faster burning speed of biochar. An investigation upon passivating biochar with boric acid was then conducted to strengthen sintering in this paper. A layer of thin film of B2O3 distributed in the surface of biochar was observed, which could reduce the contact between reaction gas and biochar. So the burning speed of biochar was decreased properly after passivation, and the combustion efficiency increased due to the inhibition of carbon gasification. The comprehensive effects of above changes could increase the maximum temperature of sintering bed, which facilitated to the mineralization of sintering mixtures. Eventually sintering indices got reinforced. Thus the indices of sinter as applying 40% passivated biochar were comparable with that of 100% coke breeze.

In order to decrease high aluminum consumption in Interstitial-Free (IF) steel production in a steel plant, Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) process data from 2428 heats were analyzed by statistical methods. The results showed that the blowing oxygen quantity and oxygen activity, before the RH and before deoxidization, have positive correlations with aluminum consumption, especially the blowing oxygen quantity. Waiting time before refining also has a positive correlation with aluminum consumption when it exceeds 7 min. On the contrary, steel temperature before RH has a significant negative correlation with aluminum con sumption, when it is between 1600 and 1630 °C. According to the statistical results, the RH refining process was optimized when the steel temperature before RH was controlled between 1630 and 1645 °C, waiting time was controlled at less than 7 min, blowing oxygen quantity was controlled to less than 100 m3, and the oxygen activity before RH was controlled between 0.050–0.075%. After optimization, the reduction of aluminum consumption was remarkable. Average aluminum consumption decreased from 1.45 to 1.17 kg/t steel.

"Today, more than ever, drilling and blasting contractors are challenged to manage the ever-changing risks associated with blasting operations. New neighborhoods are encroaching upon mine sites and blasting projects are confronted with increasing scrutiny by permit issuing authorities and nearby residents disgruntled by new construction. The act of transporting explosives material to and from thejobsite is far from easy and trouble-free. At the same time, the pressure to stay in compliance with the growing number of government regulations continues to mount. While new tools and technology are appearing in the workplace to address some of these challenges, losses still occur. Can the datagenerated by this technology help drilling and blasting contractors make better decisions? While basic risk management principles are still applicable, do new tools and technology assist in the effort to prevent losses? What are the downsides? In this age of new technology, is face-to-face interaction still necessary? While technology is certainly a useful component in the drilling and blasting world, can it be helpful in defending claims?"

"Tieback anchors are now used routinely for landslide stabilization in the USA and abroad. It is generally understood by design engineers that friction loss over the unbonded length of a tieback anchor is inherent to the system, and such loss is permitted as long as it does not exceed a certain threshold, typically 20 percent of the post-tensioning load. However, recent experience from projects utilizing tieback anchors with unbonded lengths in excess of 150 feet has demonstrated that this criterion may be difficult to achieve, particularly in certain ground conditions. Furthermore, anchor friction loss, even if below the 20-percent threshold, has important implications for the stability of the slope that are often ignored in practice. This paper presents the results of a study in which friction loss is quantified from load test data for projects in a variety of ground conditions by means of a “wobble coefficient.” Factors that may influence the wobble coefficient are examined, and recommendations for addressing this issue in practice are presented. A recent instrumented load-test program for a landslide stabilization project in Southern California is examined, demonstrating that with appropriate monitoring controls, uncertainty with regard to friction loss can be minimized. IntroductionSteel-strand tieback anchors have been used by the geotechnical community to support shoring systems for many decades, and more recently as a means to stabilize landslides. For strand encased in grease-filled plastic sheathing, which is intended to allow the strand to elongate freely, some load can still be transferred by friction between the strand and the grease and between the grease and sheathing. The sheathing then transfers load to the surrounding grout and, in the case of ground anchors, to the surrounding soil or rock. The resulting decrease in load over the length of the unbonded zone is known as “friction loss.”A widely used criterion for ground anchor acceptance based on load testing is that the measured anchor elongation must achieve a minimum value of 80 percent of the theoretical elastic elongation, or in other words the actual elongation can be up to 20 percent less than the theoretical value. This ensures that the majority of the load applied at the anchor head is reaching the bond zone behind the assumed failure surface, since load shed within the failure mass does not contribute to stability. This criterion acknowledges that friction loss is an inherent feature of the anchor system which cannot be eliminated completely, only minimized."

Mayer curves are used for process calculation in coal preparation. They can also be used to smooth washability data by fitting a hyperbola of particular properties to ash and yield, but to introduce the density variable an independent relationship with ash content must be adopted. When this ash-density relationship has a realistic form at low density, the implied form of the mass distribution function is unrealistic, suggesting that Mayer curves represented by a hyperbolic functional form are unsuited to coal washery calculations for low-density separations. Their use at higher densities is also uncertain. A similar conclusion can be anticipated when Mayer curves are used for other mineral systems.

"Diesel engines are one of the primary contributors to the presence of nano and ultrafine aerosols in ambient air and occupational environments. Exposure to diesel emissions has been shown to contribute to various adverse health outcomes of the pulmonary system and cardiovascular system. Currently diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by way of collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a lab for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH 5040 method, which measures elemental and organic carbon explicitly. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) before the problem is identified. To remedy this, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are seeking to develop a field-portable method for measuring elemental and organic carbon in DPM aerosols. In the current study, we investigated the use of Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, which lends itself more readily to implementation in a real-time system than do the thermal-optical analysis methods. We have demonstrated a method for measuring organic and elemental carbon in DPM for a broad range of organic carbon (OC) to elemental carbon (EC) ratios (from 50.3 to 0.8). The ability to handle a wide range of OC to EC ratios is critical given the evolving diesel technology. INTRODUCTION Respiratory illnesses are common in mining industry workers [1] and exposures to toxic aerosols such as DPM can result in serious respiratory illness [2]. Health studies show a correlation between workplace exposure to diesel exhaust and an increased risk of lung cancer [3-8]. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has characterized diesel exhaust as a human carcinogen [9], and similar classifications have been made by the World Health Organization and the California Air Resource Board. A recent study [10] suggests that the risk of lung cancer is approximately three times greater for heavily exposed workers. When compared to other aerosols in the mine environment, the settling time of DPM is significantly longer than that of dust due to their small particle size (typically < 1 µm) [11]. Additionally, submicron particles (such as DPM) are deposited in the lungs much more efficiently than their larger counterparts such as dust [12]. Previous studies focusing on particle morphology [13] show that the largest mass contributor to lung disease in mining is elemental carbon, which provides a solid core onto which hydrocarbons are adsorbed. In accord with those findings the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) decided on submicron total carbon as a surrogate for monitoring diesel particulate matter in the mining environment."

A novel problem-solving exercise for undergraduates is described which is directly relevant to production supervision. It is based on the fictitious Metwin Plant which produces refined metal from sulphide concentrates via a hydrometallurgical route with six unit operat- ions. Students are given details of the chemistry, process engineering and normal operating conditions. They are also given min- imum data for the Plant when it is operating with a fault. By requesting further data, for which they are &apos;charged&apos;, the students must diagnose the fault. The responses of students to the exercise are described. The data were produced by computer simul- ation of steady state operation under normal and various faulty conditions. The development of this program was an educational experience for the author and it stimulated new interest in metallurgical process engineering.

Re-entry protocols are a tactical approach for controlling risk after blasts or large events in seismically active mines. Based on the results of a survey on 18 seismically active mines, mostly in Ontario, current re-entry practices are summarized. Over half of the mines in Ontario use event decay rate analysis as their primary re-entry decision making parameter. We study in detail the applicability of the Omori?s law as an equation for describing the event decay rate for more than 250 mining-induced aftershock sequences in seven different environments. Practical guidelines for the use of the Omori equation as a re-entry criterion are proposed.

The specifications for cast-iron pipe that have been submitted at this meeting are practically the outgrowth of those which were originally adopted, about 1860, by Mr. Kirkwood of Brooklyn, N. Y. They have been changed but little since that time, the mode of testing pipe in the hydraulic press, as well as the method of coating, not having departed from the original practice. The chief addition to the specifications has been in the adoption of a test-bar 2 in. by 1 in. in crosa-section, broken between 24-in. supports by a transverse strain applied on the flat side. Test-bars were first introduced into pipe-specifications about 1870. At that time a satisfactory test-piece had to stand a tensile strain of 16,000 lb. per square inch. The present test-bar was adopted in order to give some idea of the deflection of the iron that was being used. These deflection-tests have been so satisfactory to both engineers and manufacturers, and have met the requirements of the pipe-trade so accurately, that it is considered best to hold to the . 2-in. by 1-in. bar instead of adopting the short " Arbitration Bar," which yields but little information from the stand-point of deflection. The new feature in these specifications is the effort to reach standards to which pipe shall be cast in the future, thus permitting the manufacturer to make up stock and the purchaser to find material on hand when he asks for deliveries. Heretofore there has never been ally standard weight for pipes? although in some sizes certain weights are more frequently asked for than others. The fixing of standards for pipes permits the adoption of definite standards for fittings. Although, mining of minerals such as polymetallic nodules and sulphides from the deep sea floor has been delayed due to the combination of factors such as current availability of Cu, Ni, Co, Mn (and other metals) on land and their fluctuating prices; these deposits are still considered as the alternative source for metals in the 21st century. Exclusive rights for exploration in the ?Area? (beyond the national jurisdictions of any country) given to eight countries and consortia by the International Seabed Authority and the estimated resource of 300 million tonnes in a typical area of 75,000 km2 is expected to yield about $17.5 billion (at December 2008 metal prices) in 20 years life span of a single nodule mine-site. In order to recover 3 million tonnes of nodules, an area of 300 sq km only will be mined annually (i.e. <1 km2/day) for an optimum abundance of 10 kg/m2. However, during mining, large quantity (22 tonnes/day) of sediments associated with nodules would be resuspended that could lead to certain environmental impacts on the benthic ecosystem. Several small-scale benthic impact experiments in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, have given some insight into the possible environmental impacts and the restoration processes, but the possibility of extrapolating these findings to a commercial mining scale remains an issue to be considered. An estimated capital expenditure of $1.05 billion and operating expenditure of $4.2 billion for a single deep-sea mining venture will have to be weighed against the availability of mineral ores on land as well as the metal prices in the world market. None-the-less, development of technologies for mining and metallurgical processing, as well as formulation of regulations and guidelines for potential ?contractors? to mine these minerals have been progressing consistently. These coupled with recent efforts by certain ?entrepreneurs? to initiate mining of seafloor massive sulphides in the EEZ of certain countries, indicate the continuing interest and support the perception that such deposits could well be the future sources of metals. This paper analyzes the current status and discusses the economic, environmental, and technical issues that need to be addressed for sustainable development of deep-sea minerals.

"MiMeR, the Minerals and Metals Recycling Research Centre at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, started industry-related research work to stabilize an EAF slag from Höganäs AB with of CaO/SiO2 values near to 3.2. The intention was to determine the suitability of the EAF slag as construction material after stabilization. Some of the stabilizers effective for preventing disintegration of AOD slag were examined in laboratory tests for stabilization of the EAF slag. The EAF slag samples were mixed together with stabilizers for melting at 1600ºC and then cooling in a crucible system. With a laboratory granulation system, the liquid EAF slag was cooled rapidly using air. Samples from the tests were characterized by different techniques, including XRD and SEM. Some of the results from the work may be useful for preventing slag disintegration and, thus, enhancing utilization of the EAF slag as construction material, thereby saving valuable natural resources.IntroductionAt steel plants of some MiMeR member companies, steel grades with low carbon contents were produced in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). EAF slag was tapped out of the furnace to slag pots for transport to slag yards, where the slag was poured on the ground. Very often, the EAF slag disintegrated during cooling on the ground. Fines from the slag disintegration were often difficult to handle and use as material for road construction [1, 2]. The EAF slag disintegration was rather similar to the disintegration occurring in the slag tapped from some AOD (Argon Oxygen Decarburization) converter heats.Literature studies show that formation of dicalcium silicate (C2S) is the main reason for the disintegration or dusting of AOD slag from production of stainless steel [1-4]. The C2S can form while the content ratio of CaO to SiO2 of the slag, CaO/SiO2, exceeds 1.4 [1]. Values of CaO/SiO2 for the AOD slag are often near to 2.0, making the C2S a predominant slag component. The ß phase of C2S, ß-C2S, transforms into its low temperature ? form in the temperature range of 400-500°C, inducing a volume expansion of nearly 12% [1-4]. The volume expansion disintegrates the AOD slag."

Following the usual custom, three meetings are planned for the year. The Mid-Continent meeting will be held at Oklahoma City, Okla., Oct. 7 and 8, and the California meeting is planned for Los Angeles, probably also early in October. A program along the usual lines is under way for the annual New York meeting. Discussion and planning of the year&apos;s activity started in March. An effort is under way to secure papers dealing with some overlapping phases of engineering, petroleum geology, geophysics, law, economics, refining, etc. The main reason for attempting a program along these lines is the belief that unusually interesting technical papers can be obtained. The degree of specialization in the technical and related fields has permitted but few individuals to develop a sufficiently comprehensive viewpoint. Also, at times the developments in a particular field are capable of giving great stimulus toward much needed solutions of difficult problems in others fields of activity. With the coming of the period of restriction of production to market demand, many changes have occurred in policy and technique of petroleum production. Some changes have been advances, others have been of retrograde nature. It seems doubtful whether the adjustment to the condition of excess producing capacity has been complete or sound in some major respects. Many changes are in progress and others need to be initiated. The industry has excessive producing capacity so far as immediate market demand is concerned, but reserves for several years hence are generally believed insufficient. Exploration and discovery should go forward but development should proceed with caution and under control. Property rights should be clarified and protected for the new condition— without excessive cost for drilling wells that serve no purpose except that of giving some protection to property rights at the cost of an increased price to the consumer. Under the more steady condition of assured supply for the immediate future, as compared to the hand-to-mouth condition of wide-open production, a greatly advanced technique of development and production is possible and is being developed. Great progress has been made, but much remains to be done. "Abstract Tremie concrete for special geotechnical works needs special properties, especially during the casting process. Today’s execution standards for bored piles and diaphragm walls, EN 1536 and EN 1538, as well as the draft version of concrete standard EN 206, all comprise regulations for deep foundation concrete which have not been changed for decades. Considering the recent development in concrete technology at the same time and its actual state-of-the-art, it is essential to develop new normative specifications and specification requirements.GeneralTo allow the required integrity and quality after placing and hardening, concrete for structural elements like bored piles or diaphragm walls, used as foundations of high-rise buildings or as retaining structures for large and deep building pits, must have adequate workability and stability.In addition to requirements on mechanical properties and on durability, both of which have increased within the last decades, concrete must be suitable for being cast in deep or extremely deep excavations, see figure 1. Today’s specialist foundation engineering machinery makes it possible to drill or cut down to in excess of100 m depth. Concrete technology has developed and allows the use of high performance concrete for deep foundations. But is this capability represented by actual regulations?It has become very common for the industry to supply or use concrete with low water cement ratios, nevertheless highly flowable and set-retarded for several hours if needed. Very low water cement ratios allow design strength of 60 MPa or higher (Larisch, 2011), and a very low porosity which is required for a long service life in aggressive conditions, e.g. by chlorides.To achieve best performance, it is obvious that the concrete must completely fill the excavation and fully embed the reinforcement. As vibration of deep foundation concrete is (usually) not allowed and was anyway inefficient, deep foundation concrete must be designed to self-compact under hydrostatic pressure. Generally, it must be considered that after placement the concrete’s quality cannot be influenced anymore. Therefore, both the pouring procedure and the concrete quality must be adequate."
