Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide'fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route. The A.A.E.C. is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and calcination-reduction steps. The simultaneous use of two or more families of collectors can sometimes improve one or more key flotation performance indicators, especially if the ore under consideration contains several minerals bearing the same metal. The maximum amount of collectors that can be used is limited by the need to maintain a high concentrate grade and selectivity. Therefore, when more than one collector is required, an experimental design that allows variations of both the proportions and the amounts with respect to other process factors has to be selected to find the optimum dosage. This type of design is known as "process factors in mixture amount experiment". It is a powerful design suitable for discovering the existence and evaluating the magnitude of the interactive effects between various flotation parameters. This paper elaborates the principles on which such a design is based, and demonstrates its usefulness with a case study.

A nearly dormant copper sulfide pilot-scale experimental leach containing 8.7 tons of are was injected with oxygen to determine its effect on the copper-leaching rate. Prior treatment of the uncrushed 0.25-percent-copper, mine-run stripping material consisted of 461 days of acid ferric sulfate leaching, which extracted 47 percent of the total copper. The permeability of the bed had decreased, and the percolation rate had decreased from an initial 20 gallons to 0.8 gallon per square foot per day. Copper extraction had nearly stopped. After injecting oxygen into the ore column and leaching for 30 days, the percolation rate was increased to 6 gallons per square foot per day. In an additional 298 days of leaching, an additional 40.7 percent of the copper was extracted. The improved leaching after the use of oxygen is attributed to stimulated bacterial action, better oxidation, and increased permeability.

A baseline of the poisoning effect of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) fuel impurities on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anodes was developed using polarization testing. After the baseline behaviour was characterized, tests to study the effect of various H2S concentrations on the rate and amount of cell voltage degradation and recovery were performed. Attempts were made to improve the rate and amount of recovery by various methods. Testing was very reproducible, but significant electrochemical performance degradation was seen after all H2S poisoning tests even at an H2S concentration of 0.1 ppm. Degradation is initially quite rapid, but after a period of time the rate of degradation levels off. After poisoning was complete, the H2S flow was stopped and the cells were allowed to recover. Some recovery was seen after poisoning, but cell performance was never fully recovered.

ANON-CATARACTING (N-C) ball mill is so operated that the balls are not thrown in-ward at the top of their paths. The result is to maintain, in the mill, a quiescent pool in which classification will occur at a limiting size corresponding to the pulp density. N-C operation is produced by effecting proper relationship among mill speed, ball diameter, volume of ball load, and pulp density. "Large capacity piles are important type of foundation elements that are needed in case of high column loads such as in tall buildings with large span between columns. In many projects, especially if the designer uses the concept of one pile supporting one column (Hamza, 2003a & b). The axial capacity of the large bored deep foundations can be further increased by grouting the shaft skin and the base of the pile. The increase in the capacity of the piles due to grouting can be tremendous. Thus grouting appears as an ideal solution for achieving more reliable foundation and greater savings (Littlechild et al., 2000). A data base of pile load tests of instrumented grouted piles is under development in a major study aiming to propose a simple method to estimate the axial capacity of large bored grouted piles. The data base include pile load tests from projects constructed in Egypt and abroad. The main goal of this paper is to analyze pile load test(s) from one project. The tested deep foundations included 1.2 m diameter and 1.5 m diameter piles and a barrette of size 1.0mx2.8m. The instrumentation of the tested piles and barrette allowed for the separation of skin friction and base contributions to the axial load. Further, the contribution of the skin friction of every layer along the pile shaft could be identified. The results of the analysis clarified how base and shaft grouting increased the axial capacity of the pile and decreased the settlements for certain load level compared to conventional un-grouted piles installed under similar conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, significant research has been carried out to develop new techniques which are suitable to withstand problems in major projects such as high applied loads in high rise building, large spans structures projects and structures designed using the concept one pile supporting one column (Hamza, 2003a & b). Base and shaft grouting of piles are one of these new techniques which aim at decreasing the settlements and increasing the capacity of the pile under axial load that became major requirements in large projects (Stocker, 1983; Mullins et al., 2001; and Hamza, 2015).Base grouting consists of injection grout under pressure at the base of the pile after the concrete is sufficiently hard. Field evidences showed that the ultimate end bearing of base-grouted piles could be as high as 1.5 that of non-base-grouted bored piles (Suckling and Eager, 2001). Further, field evidences was provided by Shahien and El-Naggar (2015) that showed an increase in end bearing resistance due to base grouting reached to 2 to 3 times that of non-base-grouted bored pile. On the other hand, shaft-grouting causes increase in the soil density in the zone which had been disturbed by the pile construction and thereby improves the shaft resistance of the pile. Field measurements by Gouvenot and Gabaix (1975), Stocker (1983), Robson and Wahby (1994), Troughton and Stocker (1996), Byrne et al. (1998), Joer and Randolph (1998), Hamza and Leoni (1998), Littlechild et al. (2000), Hamza and Ibrahim (2002), Hamza (2003 a&b), Hamza (2015) and Shahien and El-Naggar (2015) showed that the shaft resistance of grouted piles could be nearly 1.5 to 5 times that of non-grouted piles."

Predicting the spatial distribution of rock mass properties in cave mining is a critical challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel machine learning-based model to advance our comprehension of rock behaviour. This model specifically focuses on the spatial distribution of rock mass and mechanical properties, a crucial aspect of our understanding of rock mechanics. Our model is inspired by the recognition that neighbouring information serves as crucial prior knowledge for predicting the spatial distribution of these properties, wherein closer neighbours are likely to exhibit similar characteristics. To effectively capture and model these neighbour relationships, we design a neural network-based model to map the spatial locations within the data set into a new highdimensional space. Within this transformed space, we utilise Euclidean distance to identify N neighbours. Leveraging these neighbours, we introduce a straightforward yet highly effective approach—label propagation—to construct a graph that illustrates neighbour relationships. This graph not only facilitates the prediction of the spatial distribution of rock mass properties but also offers a measure of uncertainty for these predictions. We validate the proposed method using a real rock data set and showcase its efficacy in capturing intricate relationships and distributions within rock properties, enabling precise predictions across diverse spatial scales. Our results underscore the potential of machine learning-based approaches to revolutionise the field of rock mechanics, providing valuable insights applicable to geotechnical engineering, mining, and other sectors where an accurate understanding of rock properties is paramount. This model has direct practical implications, offering a new tool for geotechnical engineers and mining professionals to enhance their understanding and prediction of rock properties, thereby improving safety and efficiency in their operations.

"The Ontario Division of Inca Metals Company, a Unit of Inca Limited, operates eleven mines, four mills, three refineries, one smelter and one iron ore recovery plant. All but one mine, mill and refinery are located within a fifty kilometer radius of Sudbury, Ontario. A mine-mill complex is located some 100 kilometers west of Thunder Bay on the shore of Lake Shebandowan and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne.During the past 10 years the use of recycled water in our milling operations has increased to more than 95% at each mill. This high degree of water reuse has reduced the (a) need for fresh water and (b) the contaminant level of the downstream aquatic environment. The aggregating of effluents in a common receptor provides a process water having a consistent quality thereby minimizing upsets in mill metallurgy while concurrently improving the operating economies and the downstream aquatic environment."

Koffiefontein Mine commissioned a distributed antenna system as an underground communication backbone for the DISPATCH® production management system during September1999. STAS Ltd, the supplier of the Distributed Antenna System developed the System for an Integrated and Automated Mine (SIAM). This communication system, in conjunction with DISPATCH®, fulfils Koffiefontein Mine’s present and future requirements for accurate draw control, increasing productivity and improving working conditions. The DAS as SIAMnet communication network was selected by the mine, because of its superior data transmission rate of up to 1.5Mbps at 860MHz, video and Ethernet transmission facilities, and future enhancement abilities. The results of the commissioning tests confirmed the quality and integrity of the data and voice communication. The initial installation enabled 9000 metres of underground production tunnels with voice communication inclusive of 3700 metres having data communication. This article discusses the requirements and selection of the telecommunication system for an underground mine. A description of the installed distributed antenna system follows with a summary of the commissioning tests. The dynamic behavior of pile foundations is investigated in both theory and practice. The computation method for vibration of pile foundations and DYNAN computer program are introduced comprehensively. With a model of non-reflective boundary between the near field and far field, the Novak's method of soil-pile interaction is improved. The dynamic analysis and design of foundation for a reciprocation compressor with driver power 15,000 HP are described to illustrate the computation method of soil-pile interaction. Different design options for the piles are compared to limit the vibration of foundation and produce a safe, economic system. The design with 16 - 0.9 m piles is adopted rather than that with 25-0.5 m piles, since the larger damping is provided by the piles with larger diameter. Both field and laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the soil properties including down hole seismic tests to provide soil shear wave velocities at different depths. The method and procedure used in this study can be applied to the design of pile foundations for tall buildings, bridges and offshore platform with soil-pile interaction under seismic, blast, sea wave and other dynamic loads.

Benchmarking of mining operations has been in vogue for a number of years: it seems teams are forever flying around the world to try to understand what other operations are doing. However, unless a benchmarking exercise involves data gathering at a fundamental level and a rigorous analysis process is applied, the trip will be nothing more than industrial tourism. When benchmarking is performed thoroughly, the range of comparisons that can be made is extensive and informative, and need not be restricted to sites with similar conditions and equipment fleets. This paper describes the detailed and rigorous process for benchmarking used throughout AMC benchmarking studies. The paper demonstrates how, through drilling down to the underlying drivers, the often heard cry of æyou canÆt compare us, weÆre differentÆ can be overcome. Included in the discussion are a number of significant issues that have been identified during AMC benchmarking studies. The paper then considers the types of opportunities that have been identified and the potential for improvement. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for planning, measuring and management of operational performance.

A program of re-planting native mallee trees, which can be harvested on a short rotation cycle, has been initiated in Western Australia to counteract increasing soil salinity in the wheat belt region. Large volume applications for the wood products generated by these plantings are required to improve the returns to farmers. The metallurgical industry is a large-scale user of carbon, and a project was carried out through the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing to investigate the use of mallee-derived carbons in metallurgical processes. The use of renewable carbon sources, such as charcoal, to replace fossil carbon has the additional benefit of reducing the net CO2 generated by the metallurgical industry. Experiments were undertaken to assess the performance of mallee derived charcoals as reductants for the solid state reduction of ilmenite and for iron ore bath smelting. Rotary drum reduction tests showed that the reduction rate of ilmenite with the mallee charcoal was approximately twice that of Collie coal at the same fixed carbon/ilmenite ratio in the bed. Iron bath and slag bath injection tests demonstrated that the mallee charcoals dissolved readily in molten iron carbon baths and reacted efficiently with iron making slags.

There is an increasing trend in the copper smelters to recycle electronic materials, which contain relatively high concentration of precious metals. As a consequence, the amount of precious metals lost in the slag phase is increasing. To determine the portion of the precious metals chemically dissolved and that associated with the mechanically trapped matte in the slag will be a key factor to improve the recovery of those metals. Thus, an experimental study was carried out to determine the distribution of precious metals (Au, Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru) between the equilibrated copper matte and iron-silicate slag phases. The experiments were made in a magnesia crucible at 1573 K and a fixed partial pressure of SO2 of 0.1 atm for the matte grades between 40 and 70 mass% of copper. It was found that the distribution ratios (defined as mass% X in slag/mass% X in matte, where X represents the precious metal) are around 10-2 for Ru, 10-3 for Au, Pt and Pd and 10-4 for Rh. The distribution ratios show a tendency to increase when the grade of matte is increased.

The design of slurry launders has usually been based on strictly empirical concepts. An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution, particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. It was decided to develop a design procedure, which would accomplish two things: First: Take into consideration most of the known significant variables and systematize the procedure to assure consistent results. Second: Provide a rational basis for examining and utilizing operating data to refine and improve the system. To accomplish this, it was necessary to develop a basic design concept. This concept has been developed through a complex development history, and yet still appears workable and technically sound. That concept may be outlined as follows: First: The solids transport velocity is the fundamental basis for slurry launder design. Second: The stream configuration, hence the launder size, is integrated with the solids transport velocity so that the actual stream velocity exceeds the solids transport velocity. Use of electrical power in the bituminous mining industry has increased many fold during the last few decades. Rapid changes have also occurred in mine electrical power systems in order to meet the demands from highly mechanized mines. Fires, explosions, and deaths due to electrocutions are the primary hazards due to the underground use of electricity, although there has been a marked decrease in the fatality rate from electrical accidents. However, efforts to eliminate electrical hazards and to insure trained manpower for better distribution, utilization, and protection of the electrical systems cannot be relaxed. In this article, 200 fatal accidents that occurred during the period from 1955 to 1970 have been analyzed. Accident frequency has been correlated with the size of the mine and of the work force, and with age and work and task experience. A strong negative correlation has been established between task experience and accident frequency. Though the available data permitted only a limited analysis, need for improvements in electrical power technology and for better education and training has been identified and discussed. Missing information in accident statistics is outlined and suggestions for better hazard analysis are presented.

Quantification of size, shape and composition has been one of the more difficult areas for those concerned with fine particle processing of coal.' Image analysers fed by optical microscopes and by scanning electron microscopes possessing backscatter detectors and energy dispersive facilities now offer techniques to improve the speed and precision of previous methods. This paper discusses the methodology and procedural difficulties associated with the microanalysis of coal. Photographs show display quality on the image analyser monitor and the equipment mentioned. Data illustrating several of the procedures are included. The major portion of data for design and operation of plant for fine particle processing depends on information regarding size, shape and composition of granular material. The lower limits of particle sizes become more important as lower grade deposits are mined. Because of the trends towards treatment of finer materials, the use of image analysis offers advantages in time, effort and accuracy. As energy becomes more critical, the above applies especially to coal processing. The Zeiss Microvideomat 2, a leading member of the second generation instruments, is now available for image analysis. There is a precision television scanning system with monochrome camera, display, control panel and central processor (see Figure 1).

The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two
