The increase in industrial demand is responsible for a consequent evolution in the process of injection of aluminum under pressure (Die Casting) to achieve requirements such as; greater geometric complexity of injected parts, larger dimensions, hard-filled cavities, thin walls, and more refined mechanical and aesthetic requirements. Thus, the industries have searched for sensible increases in pressure and injection speed, always combining the best resistance and performance of the wells submitted to the new process conditions. The need for more aggressive applications for the cavities means that there is a constant evolution of the entire production chain in the manufacture of molds, passing through several processes, among them; machining, designs with complex engineering solutions, refining in the process of heat treatments and surface treatments. Allied to these needs, high performance steels manufactured by differentiated processes with high fracture resistance, hot strength and wear must be selected. This work aims to present the main factors considered in the development of high performance molds, the engineering of materials involved, technological trends and technical engineering solutions for the different variables of the die casting process.

Over the last decade, halide (chloride, bromide and iodide) systems have been evaluated as alternative lixiviants for the processing of gold to replace cyanidation which has been widely used in commercial practice. This paper first reviews the development of processes promoted by Kaljas Ltd / Lachlan Resources (Australia) and Great Lakes Corp (USA) using different bromide/bromine systems in the early 1990's. Several research groups subsequently evaluated the use of iodide/iodine and chloride/chlorine for gold extraction, showing similar characteristics of gold/silver dissolution and recovery. A critique is :given on the advantages and the ,shortfalls of halide systems as alternative lixiviants. The stability of gold? halide complexes is discussed, based on practical experience and thermodynamic modelling of their speciation, The iodide system provides the most stable gold / silver complex for easier handling. However, the cost of iodide inhibits its application for are processing. In this critique, emphasis is given on the cheapest system, which involves the use of chloride for leaching (in conjunction with an appropriate oxidant). However the chloride-base leachant has a major drawback which is related to the unstable nature of gold chloride in a reducing environment.

The work-principle from thermodynamics was used to formulate a model for predicting toxic fumes from mining explosives in underground chamber tests, where rapid turbulent combustion within the surrounding air noticeably changes the resulting concentrations. Two model constants were required to help characterize the reaction zone undergoing rapid chemical transformations in conjunction with heat transfer and work output: a stoichiometry mixing fraction and a reaction-quenching temperature. Rudimentary theory with an unsteady uniform concentration gradient was taken to characterize the combustion zone, yielding 75% for the mixing fraction. Four quenching temperature trends were resolved and compared to test results of ammonium nitrate compositions with different fuel-oil percentages (ANFO). The quenching temperature 2345 K was the optimum choice for fitting the two major components of fume toxicity: carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx). The resulting two-constant model was used to generate comparisons for test results of ANFO compositions with additives. Though respectable fits were usually found, charge formulations which reacted weakly could not be resolved numerically. The work-principle model yields toxic concentrations for a range of charge formulations, making it a useful tool for investigating the potential hazard of released fumes and reducing the risk of unwanted incidents. "Standardization of the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) method for gold in cyanide solutions was undertaken to provide a more sensitive method to quantify the gold content than the atomic absorption method standardized in 1994 (E1600). The gold concentration range covered is from 0.001 mg/L Au - 0.3 mg/L Au (0.00005 toz/t Au – 0.009 toz/t Au). Interlaboratory testing was carried out with the assistance of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International on two committees to determine the within laboratory and between laboratory reproducibility. Three barren solutions from metallurgical operations were measured in triplicate to satisfy statistical requirements for Committee E1 on Analytical Chemistry of Metals, Ores and Related Materials. A synthetically prepared matrix representing the metallurgical processing solutions was used to prepare Youden pairs to satisfy the requirements of Committee D19 on Water. Results of the standardization program are presented. INTRODUCTION Analysis of process solutions for gold concentration requires accurate and sensitive analytical methods in order to manage process control and metallurgical accounting. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) has been the work horse of the assay lab for this duty for decades. In 1994 the FAAS standard method was approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (1). Six process solutions were collected and preserved by measuring the pH and adjusting to greater than pH 10, if necessary. Duplicate solutions were provided to eight laboratories in random order for analysis by FAAS covering the gold concentration range of 0.19 µg/mL (0.006 toz/t.) to 10.7 µg/mL (0.312 toz/t). A high precision method was used, which involved bracketing the sample with the higher and lower standards nearest to its concentration repeating readings three times and averaging the results. The optimum precision for the FAAS gold method was found to be at the 1.00 µg/mL (0.029 toz/t) and lower scope limit 0.3 µg/mL (0.009 toz/t) gold concentration. Since tailings solutions typically have concentrations below the lower scope limit, use of ICPMS was developed at Newmont USA Limited (Newmont) to assay the lower range solutions."

"Computers have been used extensively in the mineral industry in exploration, reserves calculation, mining technology, mineral processing, etc. With respect to coal mining, there are also various applications for evaluating rock slope stability of open pits, design of open pits, underground operations, mine ventilation, ground control, data processing and management information, operations control and certain technological applications. Mine ventilation appears to be the field in underground coal mining touched on most; on the other hand, underground coal mining methods evaluation is represented only sparingly.It is therefore essential to review the status of the computer in underground coal mining methods evaluation in order to define its scope for further application. The paper discusses the roles of the mining engineer, programmer, computer operator and analyst as well as that of the computer. The important parameters will be identified and discussed along with their application for different underground coal mining methods, with their individual unit processes. Mainly, longwall face operations have been covered. Although many models have been of academic interest, they can be considered as important steps in a transition stage which will be followed by more practical applications for computers for underground coal mining method evaluations in the future. This calls for a coordinated effort from all concerned."

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. The mining industry is beginning to adopt quality systems based on the requirements of International Standards for quality assurance, such as the ISO 9000 series. Indications from similar industries are that considerable benefits are to be had from their adoption. This paper describes the use of the International Standard ISO 9001 for quality assurance within BUKA Minerals Limited. This provided guidance for the development of a clear statement providing agreement on the processes to be followed and the outputs required when dealing with outside service providers. Discussion focuses on the interaction with BUKAÆs consultants and contractors during the specification stage, resulting from the application of quality assurance techniques. Risk analysis was used to identify and manage the risks associated with the companyÆs contract for geotechnical and mine design services and the tender for a mine development program of work during the feasibility stage of the project. Setting acceptance controls for the deliverables from such contracts is traditionally fraught with difficulty. BUKA used Failure Mode and Effect Analysis for exposing underlying risks that were not effectively being countered. The briefs were reviewed and additional controls were developed to manage the risk. These controls have provided clearer instructions to the consultants and contractors, indicated audit points for the company and defined the deliverables. There exists within the company, and among its outside service providers, a clearer understanding of what is to be achieved and how it will be measured. The process has imparted considerable confidence to both parties on how the work will proceed and what outputs are to be provided. Some discussion is provided on how quality principles are being applied throughout industry and commerce, generally, and how they may apply to the mining industry. The paper argues that, far from being an appendix to the tendering process, Risk Management should be a mandatory step integrated into the definitions of the work.

The trend to larger grinding mills, requiring total drive power in the range of 10,000 KW(13,400 HP) or so provides the incentive for developing new power transmitting techniques, since conventional girth gears are limited to about 3700 to 4500 KW per mesh (5000-6000 HP). For the immediate future, the synchronous motor, with its beneficial power factor, and the squirrel cage induction motor, with its high reliability record and low maintenance, still promise to be the best choice for prime mover(s). Due to the abovementioned single mesh power limitation of the gear train, however, two or more motors must be combined to attain the required drive power. This paper describes a scheme for coupling these motors to the mill using a straightforward, essentially mechanical means that is based on proven components and controls.

As part of its mine subsidence research program, the Bureau of Mines and the American Electric Power Co. cooperated on a study, conducted at the Price River Coal Co. No. 3 Mine, directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. Subsidence was monitored at the No. 3 Mine over two adjacent longwall panels. The subsidence study area was reduced when the two planned panels were reduced in length because of equipment failure and a mine fire. Subsidence was measured for 21 months. Subsidence continued for 6 months after mining had been completed. A maximum of 2.2 ft of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at an overburden depth ranging from 300 to 1,500 ft.

"Abstract Piling and deep foundations are a staple for transportation projects in the United States (US). Driven or bored piles have been used for everything from support of bridge foundations and retaining structures to support of culverts and embankments on soft ground. Deep foundations have been popular in the US transportation market to better handle large axial and lateral loads, extreme event loading, and to better control structure movement. However, there are challenges in the maintenance of design and construction codes in transportation for consistent and reliable structure foundation elements. A significant amount of effort continues in the US to maintain national codes and specifications at a level consistent with the state of practice, and identify and conduct research for providing safe and cost effective highway structures.IntroductionThe transportation sector in the United States has a hierarchy of design and construction codes that are used for the specification of piling and deep foundations. Any highway or bridge project on the National Highway System (NHS) must be designed and constructed in accordance with a national set of standards approved by the State Highway Departments, and that are acceptable to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). However, in any jurisdiction, exceptions are permitted with approval. Therefore, design may be governed by the national standard specification, a state standard specification and design manuals, special provisions, or guideline specifications. Any of these standards, or a combination, may be used depending on the needs of the owner agency.The FHWA and the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) have worked together in the development and maintenance of geotechnical design and construction guidance and codes that support the surface transportation community. General geotechnical engineering practice in the United States lacks a singular, national design and construction code that addresses all aspects of geotechnical engineering. As a result, the AASHTO specifications provide the most complete geotechnical specifications focusing on structure foundations, retaining walls, and buried structures for surface transportation applications. This includes piling and deep foundation types commonly used for support of bridges and transportation structures.The FHWA National Geotechnical Team has published several technical guidance documents that include guideline specifications for the design and construction of driven and bored deep foundations. Reference documents published by FHWA summarize the state of practice and provide recommended design and construction guidance. These reference documents have long served as a basis for provisions included in the AASHTO specifications. Maintenance of the design code and specification, and related guidance documents for consistent use on US transportation projects requires a collaborative effort between industry, FHWA, and the member state highway departments that make up AASHTO."

Traditional methods of creating a water tight shaft liner involve the use of segmented or welded steel. When shafts are located in ground that exhibits extremely difficult conditions of high water inflow and hydraulic pressure, composite liners are often combined with ground freezing during construction. The authors were searching for a cost effective and more flexible solution to hydrostatic liners design than the traditional concrete/steel composite design used so far. Searching through new technologies developed for tunneling applications, sprayed on membranes systems seemed very promising but were not developed for the specific circumstances encountered in shaft sinking applications where ground freezing is involved. Even though freezing is a very effective technique, it creates adverse temperature conditions for the application of spray on membranes. In addition, application and hydrating cure times for those membranes products ranged between six to twenty-four hours under ideal conditions (usually temperatures well above freezing point), which eliminated them from consideration in a shaft sinking cycle. While researching different spray on membrane materials, it was discovered that Stirling Lloyd Polychem Ltd. has developed and proven a different membrane material for waterproofing liners in different tunneling applications. The characteristics of the membrane exceeds the pressure parameters encountered in frozen shaft sinking operations, and the chemical cure times were reduced to one hour per layer which worked well into the shaft sinking cycle times. More over their system included a quality control procedure that allowed insuring integrity of the membrane at application time, a very desirable feature for shaft liner construction. However, the frozen rock surface still presented an unknown in the cure time and stability equation. As all membrane products a shotcrete substrate is usually required prior to application. The hypothesis used by the author was to use this shotcrete layer, not only as a substrate, but also as a thermal insulation against the frozen rock and the membrane during both application and curing time. The authors knew from experience that shotcrete could be applied successfully over frozen rock. But the shotcrete temperature curve over time was unknown and no information were found in the available literature. Testing was required to determine whether a suitable mix of shotcrete could be applied to the frozen shaft wall to provide enough heat of hydration for a suitable period of time to create conditions suitable for membrane application and curing.

"There are several ways to condition lead-based alloy anodes for zinc electrowinning: electrochemical treatment, chemical treatment and physical treatment. Two advantages of physical treatments are their productivity and variety. In this report, physical treatments, including blasting with silica, alumina, steel grit and cut zinc wire, were tested. The laboratory tests confirmed there were differences in the formation of anode scales during electrowinning and in the suppression of lead dissolution from the anodes. With an increase in the surface roughness, the misfit between the PbC""2 and the MnC>2 was mitigated and the anchor effect was promoted; these effects resulted in dense Mn oxide scales on the anode.IntroductionZinc is widely used for hot-dip zinc plating and for die casting alloys. As a supplier of materials, we have endeavored to produce zinc that is economical and contains as little impurity as possible. As a result of our efforts, a technology for consistently providing special high-grade (SHG) zinc has been established. However, as seen in the issuance of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, public awareness of the industrial impact of heavy metals on the environment has been heightened. Increasing efforts to control environmentally sensitive substances will be necessary for our production processes.Electrolytic SHG zinc is produced by electrodeposition in an acidic solution with a Pb-Ag or Pb-Ag-Ca alloy for the anode and an Al alloy for the cathode. Pb alloy anodes are widely used because of their excellent durability; however, they are a source of Pb, which is the main impurity of the product."

A self regulating helical inducer has been developed and tested for dry injection of coarse or fine solids into a hydraulic pipeline. This centrifugal pumping device has also been modified and tested for use as a boost pump in medium and long distance pipeline haulage systems. The helical inducer has been operated as an integral component of a slurry injection vehicle. This compact, low profile vehicle also includes crushing and screening components, solids feeding components, a track drive system for mobility and is run by a single operator. The helical injector and boost pump operate without speed and flow controls allowing for the practical hydraulic transport of excavated materials.

The paper presents two methods for periodical identification of the dependence between haulage speed and loading torque of the shearer for periodical corrections of control algorithms. These algorithms are useful for working with small microprocessor-based systems. The paper is concluded with results of identification using above methodsand with discussion about their merits and demerits. The longwall mining system is the basic exploita-tion system used in coal mining in Poland. The quantity of coal produced by this system, using a shearer loader as a cutter-loader machine is esti-mated at 170 million tones per year. For this rea-son scientific research concerning these machines is of major practical significance.

The theoretical relationships that are used to calculate in situ rock stress magnitudes and directions from borehole deformation data obtained during overcoring are based on the assumption that the rock is a linearly elastic material. Strictly speaking, this assumption is not valid in any rock. Thus, investigators using overcoring techniques must either accept various degrees of nonlinearity and the associated inaccuracies or use core testing techniques that address the problem and compensate for elastic nonlinearity. Previously developed test procedures for stress-relief overcores partially correct for nonlinearity. This Bureau of Mines paper describes a test procedure that completely corrects for elastic nonlinearity in stress-relief overcores.

Alkaline solution rinsing for decommissioning of an acid-leached residue was evaluated by column experiments, neutralization tests and solid characterization by XRD and SEM. It was found that consumption of a strong alkali during residue neutralization was much greater than that required to neutralize the soluble acidity. The excess alkalinity was consumed by solid-phase conversions unnecessary for the success of decommissioning. Alkaline rinsing did not reduce the time requirement for decommissioning when compared with plain water rinsing. Since no benefit is gained to compensate for the additional costs associated with excess alkali consumption, we conclude that strong alkaline solution rinsing is in fact inferior to simple water rinsing.

Donald Cranstone holds B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Harvard University. He has worked as a mine geologist, a provincial geological survey geologist and as a senior exploration geologist. He joined what is now the Minerals and Metals Sector of Natural Resources Canada in 1971, where he has been a commodity specialist for gold, for copper and another 28 metals. He is a senior mineral economist, currently engaged in analysis of mineral exploration and discovery success in Canada and of the future of the Canadian mining industry. Abstract This paper examines the history of Canadian non-petroleum mineral production. The outlook over the next 25 years, for mining in Canada and in each province and territory, is reviewed. The outlook for mining in Canada and in most provinces/territories is favourable, but problems seem likely in a few jurisdictions unless new orebodies are brought into production. In terms of exploration potential, Canada consistently ranks among the top three countries in the world. Over the last eight years, Canada has consistently been second only to Australia as a destination for exploration investment. For the first time, Canada is ranked in terms of total mineral production, including coal and construction materials, relative to all the countries of the world including countries of the former communist bloc.

To develop technology to assure an ample supply of zinc and to reduce environmental pollution, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated alternatives to the roast-leach process for treating complex sulfide concentrates. Previous studies proved that low-grade zinc sulfide (ZnS) concentrates could be leached using chlorine-oxygen to produce zinc chloride (ZnCI2). The process involves high energy requirements for evaporating the pregnant solution to produce anhydrous ZnCl2 needed for electrolytic cell feed. An efficient hydrometallurgical process would facilitate treatment of lower grade ores than can be used in conventional processing and would render roasting unnecessary. An alternative method was devised for recovering ZnCl2 from solution. Zinc diammine chloride [Zn(NH3)2CI2] was precipitated from solution by adding ammonium chloride (NH4CI) and sparging with ammonia (NH3) to a pH of 6 to 7.5. The spent solution was treated with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)21 at 60° to 80° C for 1 to 4 h to remove remaining zinc and NH3. The Zn(NH3)2CI2 was heated to 300° to 400° C to remove NH3 and produce anhydrous ZnCI2. A possible flowsheet was devised and is included.

"When a metal-mining company takes out a workmen's compensation insurance policy, it does so to relieve itself of its uncertain and variable financial liability under laps requiring payment to employees for lost-time accidents, there-by passing the liability or to the insuring agency. For this service, or rather for the assumption of the risk, the insuring agency charges the mining company a price, or in insurance parlance, ""a premium"".The insuring agency depends upon a volume and variety of business to average the losses incurred by its individual policy holders, and determines its price to cover losses that are suffered and its cost of doing business.It is generally known that all types of insurance are founded on the theory of probability applied to large groups of risks, Workmen's compensation insurance is no exception, and the average price paid therefor must be based on the frequency and severity of accidents in the particular industry or branch of industry under consideration. The frequency and severity rates are determined by statistics, which, of course, unless standardized, kept carefully and consistently, and analyzed properly, are liable to be inaccurate and misleadingThe importance of large groups in arriving at an average price for insurance service can not be overestimated, For example the writer knows of one small group of some twenty metal-mining companies whose losses during the past two years exceeded their premium charge by 54%. Not a single individual company during the two years kept its losses below the premium rate. For several years the group as a whole has persistently exceeded its premium rate, Such risks are not profitable to the insuring agencies and can only be carried where a large volume of good risks will balance the poor risks, but in order to conform to good insurance ethics the premium rate must be based on averages for the industry as a whole, and kept sufficiently low to induce operators to sell their risks."
