This dictionary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining and mineral literature in the belief that it will fill a recognized need. Several attempts have been made over the years to revise Albert Fay's Glossary of the Mining and Mineral Industry which first appeared in December of 1918. Frank L. Hess of the Bureau of Mines worked on a revision, but his untimely death prevented its completion. Subsequently, the writer was employed to compile and edit this dictionary in cooperation with the technical staff of the Bureau of Mines. Fay's glossary contained about 18,000 terms with 27,000 definitions; the present compilation contains about 55,000 terms with approximately 150,000 definitions. These terms are of both a technical and local nature, and they apply to metal mining, coal mining, quarrying, geology, metallurgy, ceramics and clays, glassmaking, minerals and mineralogy, and general terminology. Petroleum, natural gas, and legal mining terminology, unless of a general nature, has been excluded, as has been foreign terminology where there is an English equivalent. Several thousand Spanish-American mining terms that appeared in Fay's compilation have been removed to make way for the thousands of new English terms that have evolved over the years. Those Spanish-American and Mexican terms still used in the Southwestern United States have been retained.

During a mine disaster or emergency, underground air can quickly become contaminated. In these circumstances, all underground mine workers are taught to don breathable air supply units at the first sign of an emergency. However, no contemporary oxygen consumption data is available for the purposes of designing breathing air supply equipment specifically for mine escape. Further, it would be useful to quantify the oxygen requirements of breathing air supply users for various escape scenarios. To address this need, 14 participants crawled a distance of 305 m each while their breath-by-breath oxygen consumption measurements were taken. Using these data, linear regression models were developed to determine peak and average oxygen consumption rates as well as total oxygen consumption. These models can be used by manufacturers of breathing air supply equipment to aid in the design of devices that would be capable of producing sufficient on-demand oxygen to allow miners to perform self-escape.

Al powder is used extensively as an antioxidant in carbon-containing bricks, but it cannot be used directly in water-based carbon-containing castables due to its hydration tendency. To overcome this problem, in this work, SiO2-PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) inorganic-organic hybrid coatings have been prepared via sol-gel processing, and used to coat Al powder. The hydration behaviour of uncoated and coated Al powders has been investigated in water at 60 or 100°C for 36h by examining phase and microstructural changes. While significant hydration is detected in uncoated Al powder, no obvious hydration is detected in coated Al powder, indicating that its hydration resistance has been greatly improved. Oxidation resistance of graphite coexisting with uncoated or coated Al powder was also investigated in air at 1250°C for 1.5h. The oxidation ratio of graphite coexisting with coated Al powder was similar to that of graphite coexisting with uncoated Al powder, indicating that both powders showed similar antioxidising behaviour. This, along with the much improved hydration resistance, makes the coated Al powder a potential antioxidant in carbon-containing castables systems.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project located in Doha Qatar, was designed to collect and manage ground and stormwater and then discharge the treated waters offshore. The project constructed a long outfall tunnel using an EPB TBM with segmental lining, each tunnel ring being 1.35 m in length with an internal diameter of 3.7 m.. The diffuser structure was a 6-arm structure, measuring 294m by 40 m connected to a central manifold in turn connected to the TBM constructed tunnel via a riser shaft drilled from an off-shore barge. This technical paper will discuss the planning, methodology and construction practices employed to connect the TBM tunnel to the diffuser structure 10.2 km offshore.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role that individual factors play in health and safety (H&S) outcomes in the mining industry. Two surveys, one measuring self-reported routine safety performance and one measuring individual perceived competence in the non-routine knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) critical to emergency response, were administered to two samples of mineworkers in separate research studies over a 2-year period (N=2,020 and 696, respectively). Eight demographic items were common to both surveys and their associations with each performance outcome were tested in response to a series of exploratory research questions.

The floatability of andalusite and associated minerals are studied and their action mechanisms of andalusite and associated minerals with collector alkyl benzene sulphonate are also studied. Through the mensuration of electrical potential and the infrared spectroscopy, as well as desorption tests, it is confirmed that the interaction of andalusite with sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS), is in addition to physical adsorption, but also is chemical adsorption. The study results of the pure minerals are used for the flotation of actual andalusite mineral. By flotation from contain-ing 45.68% andalusite ore, the fine andalusite concentrate is gained which Andalusite grade is 85.88%, containing Al2O355.29% and Fe2O3 less than 1.5%.

Together with innovatively applying modern flotation reagents and developing the breakthrough mill enterprise expert control and operating system, Doe Run Buick Mill constructed an advanced large copper rougher scavenger to process its complex Pb\Zn\Cu ore more efficiently. The scavenger circuit, featuring its own motor control center, air blower, multiple reagent loops and FrothSense+™ camera, operates both mechanically and chemically to maximize copper recovery and under expert control. Such scavenger features can be applied to zinc rougher circuits for all Doe Run mills to maximize Cu recovery during Cu special runs when the zinc rougher becomes a copper rougher scavenger.

North Louisiana (including all townships north of the Louisiana base line) had a year of normal development in 1940, marked by the discovery of two shallow oil fields producing from the Wilcox formation in La Salle Parish and a large increase in drilling in the old Caddo shallow field. This renewal of shallow drilling activity led to a somewhat unexpected increase in the number of wells drilled, although the total footage and average depth continued to decline, as in several preceding years. Well completions and depth statistics for 1940, with previous years for coinparison, are as follows: Wildcat producers in 1940 include the discovery oil wells in the Olla and Nebo fields; also three gas wells in the vicinity oi the Olla field and a shallow gas well, which opened a new field or extension in the Greenwood area of Caddo Parish. This table illustrates the lack of important deep discoveries since 1937, in which year the Rodessa, Lisbon and Cotton Valley fields were being actively developed. Operators have been forced to return to the old type of shallow drilling, which necessarily means smaller producing wells. Oil production in 1940 was 24,381,760 bbl., a decrease of 867,880 bbl. from 1939, or 3.44 per cent. The newly discovered fields of La Salle Parish produced over a million barrels, and other increases worthy of note were at Cotton Valley, Caddo, Sligo and Sugar Creek. The greatest decrease was again at Rodessa, although this remains the principal producing field. Geological Names Revised Deep drilling during 1940 did not provide a great deal of new geological information. However, by agreement of a majority of the members of the Shreveport Geolog- ical Society, the names of some of the Lower Cretaceous formations have been revised in the interest of greater clarity and in order to make the descriptions agree better with the facts discovered in recent years. The geological section is discussed in detail and reasons for changes in nomenclature are stated in a recent publication by Ralph W. Imlay. Plant samples collected from the mined sites of Beulah, Center and Zap and the test sites of North Beulah 1, North Beulah If, South Beulahh and Center were analyzed for their nutrient concentrations. The vegetation from the mined areas generally showed lower concentrations of Na, P and Cu and failed to meet the nutritional requirements for beef cattle as defined by National Research Council (minimum requirements are: Na, 600; Cu, 4; P, 1800 µg/g dry weight). Plants from Beulah showed generally higher concentrations than from Center or Tap. Tissue concentrations of K varied significantly between sites for 5 species due to the low tissue concentrations at Center. Deficiencies are difficult to isolate as the sampling was done in mid-summer and generally during that season the tissue concentrations tend to decrease in several species. All of the plant species at the unmined sites, with the exception of western wheatgrass at Zap, had lower concentrations of P than the minimum nutritional requirements for beef cattle. Sodium concentration was low but Cu was marginal to adequate in plant species at the unmined sites. Concentrations of K, Mn and Cu in western wheatgrass were greater at Center than at Zap while the opposite was true of the concentrations of Zn, Cu and P in blue grama and Cu in green needlegrass. Amending the spoil with slack at North Beulah I decreased the concentrations of Zn, Cu and P in wheatgrasses grown on spoil from 0-2, 5-10, and 20-25 foot depths, respectively. In general, the mean tissue K+/Na+ ratios were greater in plants on slack amended spoils, primarily due to the reduced Na concentrations in the tissue. At North Beulah II test site, only wheatgrasses grown on spoil amended with slack showed significant increase in K and decrease in Na and Mn concentrations. At South Beulah test site which received 12" topsoil over graded spoil, leonardite amendment decreased P concentrations in all of the grasses as compared to control, whereas fertilizer treatment increased the same. Nutrient concentrations were lower in both fescue and needlegrass with leonardite treatment and higher with fertilizer treatment although not significantly different from control. The concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Cu and N in grasses grown on topsoil at Center test site were significantly higher than on slack amended spoil. Legumes grown on topsoil at Center site contained higher concentrations of P than those grown on spoil; there were no significant effects due to slack on spoil or topsoil. The data presented in this report act only as an indication of between-treatment and between-species differences in tissue composition of plants harvested in mid-summer season. With respect to the nutrients analyzed, since none were found to be toxic, the cattle can safely feed on the vegetation of these mined areas.

TVA's involvement in air quality programs is perhaps a bit unique. The Tennessee Valley Authority was established in 1933 as a regional resource development agency and therefore must view clean air and clean water as essential resources for the overall development of the Tennessee Valley region. TVA operates certain resource development and production facilities, including power-generating facilities, which are potential air pollution sources. The remarks in this paper will be restricted to air pollution control technology at power-generating stations. Perspectives of Air Pollution Control The art of pollution control must be viewed from several perspectives: 1. It must be viewed in a time perspective--what is available now for air pollution control, what might be available in the near future, what are the likely technologies for the more distant future, and what the future trends in availability of resources might be. 2. Each air pollution abatement scheme must be viewed in the perspective of its total environmental consequences--not just its ability to clean up the air. The generation of electricity from coal produces waste gases, waste particulates, and waste heat. These wastes must be disposed of either in water, in air, or on land. If the polluting wastes are removed from the gas streams going into the air, then they must be disposed of either on land or in water or, hopefully, converted into a product which has some beneficial use. As an example, removal of S02 from stack gases could be more readily accomplished if one could dump waste sulfur products in water. He would solve an air pollution problem by creating a water pollution problem. 3. Techniques for air pollution control must be viewed in the perspective of regional, national, and world resources with their national security and economic implications. The power industry might reduce air pollution by switching generating plants to burning desulfurized fuel oil or natural gas.

"The outlook for Eastern Canada is decreasing coal production over the next few years; however, a reappraisal of the long-term requirements and increased prices of coal could lead to a revitalizing of the industry. The market for Western coal is expanding and is expected to exceed 50 million tons per year in the metallurgical and thermal power fields. Western coal reserves are currently estimated at 119 billion tons. Technical developments in Eastern Canada include a shearer and gate-end support system to mechanically cut the stall and brushing at the tail-end of a longwall. In Western Canada, the most modern equipment is used in mining, beneficiating and shipping coal. Results to date on the underground hydraulic experiments exceed expectations. The importance of reclamation is recognized and plans have been made to restore and re-vegetate disturbed areas and mine dumps. In Eastern Canada, experiments were started to determine the feasibility of coal reclamation from mine dumps, including one dump that is on fire. The Mining Research Centre, Mines Branch, continued to conduct research work oriented toward solving Canadian mining problems The Western office of the Centre, opened in 1970, was set up primarily to study problems associated with a resurgent coal industry."

Since the discoveries of favorable deposits are becoming increasingly difficult, mining operations shift to lower grade and deeper deposits. The viability of these operations is sensitive to many factors, such as commodity prices and operating costs. Given that a mining corporation has no power to set prices, the focus is directed on minimizing the operating costs. Underground mining operations require a network infrastructure, including shaft, ramps, declines, levels, cross-cuts, raises, winzes, and adit. The design of this network is a costly process. As such, it has a significant potential to reduce development and haulage costs. Furthermore, network design is a continuous process along with development, production, and maintenance throughout mine life. Under the constraints of the turning radius, the gradient, and the obstacle avoidance for haulage network of underground mines, this paper first demonstrates network design and optimization approaches using Dubins path combined with the Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm. A threshold-based model is developed, providing viable solutions to the network design when the number of declines is high. Furthermore, a three-dimensional Rapid-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm combined with Dubins path is employed as a heuristic solver for obstacle avoidance purposes in the network. Various case studies are conducted to show the applicability of the proposed methods.

"A methodology was developed in the mid-1980’s to predict plant performance from standard laboratory flotation tests. The technique is based on a simple, empirical kinetics model, and is tailored for use by the practical metallurgist.To date the performance of more than 20 flotation plants has been predicted, including copper, lead, zinc, phosphate, pyrite, graphite, cassiterite, platinum, nickel and various slags. The method has successfully been used to predict and size four flotation plants directly from bench-scale laboratory flotation testwork. All have since been commissioned, and have performed as predicted.The technique has now received broad acceptance within the South African mining industry, for example in the last year alone it has been used to drive flowsheet development for at least seven new plants. It is also being used to assist in the optimisation of existing operating plants.The methodology is described in this paper and verification of the methodology is presented using case studies of porphyry, polymetallic and PGM operations.INTRODUCTIONThere is considerable interest these days in the use of modelling to simulate flotation circuits, for process design and plant optimisation purposes. Although these models are proving to be useful tools for plant design and optimisation, their complexity can make them cumbersome – expensive to use and difficult for metallurgists to visualise and mentally absorb, without a background in each specific technique. In “SUPASIM” no attempt is made to measure flotation fundamentals, rather to use empirical relationships between laboratory flotation kinetics and plant performance – relationships that hold up well to validation exercises as will be demonstrated later in this paper. Although not designed to be as comprehensive as other models, “SUPASIM” is easily understood by the operating metallurgist and can be quickly and easily applied."

IN this paper we shall examine the Why, Where and How concerning the agglomeration of iron ores and concentrates. Fig. l answers the questions @f why there is so much interest at the present time in the art of agglomeration. The use of sinter or pellets in the blast furnace has materially increased their rated •capacity. ':'President Hains Company Ltd. Engineering J. S. McMahon ( 1) reports an increase from 653 tons of .pig iron per day to 1140 tons of pig iron per day with the use of a 100 per cent sinter burden on one of his blast furnaces. In the United States the use of 100 per cent pellets has increased pig iron production from approximately 1800 tons per day to over 3000 tons pig iron per day (2). Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) is one of the biggest occupational health hazards for underground coal miners. Dusty mining environments can cause long-term health problems, including pneumoconiosis and progressive massive fibrosis. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has recently revised regulations promoting enhanced dust mitigation technologies, which have sparked renewed interest in the development of dust mitigation technologies. The flooded bed dust scrubber (FBS) is one of the most widely used technologies; however, it is limited by technical challenges, the most notable being the potential to clog. Recent studies have shown that applying vibration to filter mesh can improve the overall efficiency of the scrubber and that the system can be readily integrated to existing continuous mining equipment using an energy harvesting approach. In this follow-up study, the impact of mesh design and surface modification on system efficiency was examined using different vibrating liquid-coated stainless-steel mesh panels in a laboratory-scale FBS. Based on the two-way interaction data from a multi-factor experimental design, the results show that the performance of the system can be optimized by using hydrophilic 20- or 30-layer filters and by excitation frequencies between 67 and 134 Hz. This laboratory study suggests that a 20-layer mesh screen with hydrophilic surface applications and optimized vibration parameters can perform similar to that of a 30-layer static mesh, which is typically used in industrial units.

First of all let me say what a genuine pleasure it is to be here. Acapulco certainly is a beautiful change. I'm going to spend sometime talking about change, because frankly I'm astounded at the rate of change in our world today. One good example of this, reminds me that the first time I spoke before the AIME two years ago, we were at the Ramada Inn in Beckley, West Virginia. Today we're at the Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Now that's what I call a change. Seriously though, I'm sure you've all heard it said that the most consistent thing about our society is its constant change. Five years ago, no one could have predicted the changes we experienced in the United States during the first half of the 1970's. In the past twenty-four months alone, we have seen two presidents, three vice-presidents and hundreds of administration and government personnel changes. We have stumbled from one social crisis to another, while suffering through rising inflation, major energy shortages and labor unrest that could plunge us into a full scale economic depression. In view of these constant and unpredictable changes around us, it's obvious that we must learn to deal with change and "roll with the punches" if we are to survive. A controversial book published recently, explores in detail the various aspects of change and its impact on man.
