This is a new era for the minerals industry. Never before has there been more need for effective communication. So said Robert Anderson, chairman and chief executive officer of Hanna Mining Co. He was speaking to the American Mining Congress's Communication Workshop. The question is whether there is enough industry concern to meet the challenge. Anderson observed that increased workshop attendance, in continuing tough times, reflects the industry's concern for communication. But, why were students, faculty, engineers, supervisors, and managers not at the conference? Communication applies to every manager, Anderson said. But he was the only operating manager present. And only one company sent operating supervisors. The remaining conference participants were public relations personnel, generally with nonmining backgrounds. And the program dealt mostly with public relations issues. Role of Communication in the Minerals Industry. It is well known that the minerals industry faces economic, political, and social problems. Economic shifts and foreign competition have created an international minerals industry and an international marketplace. This, in turn, calls for worldwide communication. Other factors effecting communication are: • Governmental protectionism as well as regulatory reforms call for increased interaction with governing officials. • Changing social values have created environmental issues and anti-industry attitudes. This intensifies the need for improved public relations. • Traditional work values are shifting towards self-actualization and humanistic movements. The work force is better educated and more informed. Employees demand more satisfaction, equality, and job autonomy. • The mining industry's task of managing its human resources is complicated by layoffs, job uncertainties, and bleak outlooks concerning employee morale and motivation. Technology and Information for a New Era As noted, this is a new communications era, one propelled by technology and information. Technology has led to reduced demand for raw materials by developing substitutes. Copper demand, for example, will never fully recover. Copper cables are replaced by fiberoptics; copper transmission lines, with aluminum. Technology has shifted the US from traditional to high tech and service industries. The speed, frequency, and scope of information transmission have greatly increased. But the most significant characteristic of this information is not the pace of advancing technology. It is the dramatic increase in the importance and frequency of our personal transactions. Knowledge has replaced raw materials and capital as the strategic resource. Information has replaced energy as the transforming resource. And the game against nature has become an interpersonal game (D. Bell, Post-industrial society, Physics Today, '76). In Megatrends, John Naisbitt says that information will soon double every 20 months. So, professionals will become "information workers." And communication will be the life channel of the information age. Thomas Wolfe said you can't go home again. Hanna Anderson said we are, indeed, facing a new day. It will never again be "business as usual." We must move into the information age with the rest of society. We cannot trust that the world will continue to rely on our products. Nor can we place the responsibility and control for problems and solutions outside the minerals industry. Improved communication is not a panacea. But, Anderson said, it is critical to the minerals industry. What is Communication? The word communication is overused. It is applied to every aspect of our lives. Satirist Tom Lehrer got sick of hearing about the need to communicate. He said, "It seems to me that if someone is having all that trouble communicating, the very least he can do is shut up!" Obviously, we cannot follow that advice (though we might wish that some others would do so). Communication is always going on. It is inevitable. Yet we have many misconceptions about com-

Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) technique represents an important technological advance in the construction of piles in soft soils. The possibility of excavation under the water table with no need for drilling fluids, along with high productivity, have resulted in this technique?s becoming widespread in many countries. However, CFA technology has limitations because of its difficulty in penetrating hard layers and cross strata with cobbles and boulders. In these situations, pile verticality may be an additional problem. The Cased Augered Pile (CAP) technique consists of penetrating the soil with an auger housed in a casing. Two independent rotary heads sliding along the rig mast operate the auger and the casing. By adjusting the height of the casing shoe and auger bit according to soil type, it is possible to drill piles in very severe conditions - in the presence of cobbles and boulders - and to socket the pile into the rock. The use of a steel casing enables improved pile verticality. Therefore, the CAP technique is also used to construct secant piles to be used as diaphragm walls. The limitations of this technology are the depth, usually no more than 27 m (88 feet), and the size of the rig that supports the drilling tool, no less than 70 t (77 short tons) in working conditions. This paper illustrates CAP technology, the drilling system, and the characteristics of concrete and steel reinforcement and offers a case study of the Palermo-Carini second railway line, which used CAP to construct the new 30 km (18.6 mi) railway line, 20 km (12.4 mi) of which passes through the very congested downtown area of Palermo. More than 300,000 m (186.4 mi) of piles have been drilled in dense calcarenite formations with unconfined compressive strength of 15-25 MPa (2,200-3,600 lb/inch2), soft clay, and silt formations.

EDUCATION is a business; and, if the consumer is satisfied with the product, no one has any grounds for complaint. "Pretty well satisfied" about slims up the attitude of the mining industry toward the young graduates presently entering the field. Yet, with amazing regularity the controversy over the five-year curriculum recurs in educational circles. The educational mills grind out their products, some higher grade than others, depending on individual proclivity. The cycle continues almost without interruption. Arthur Taggart, however, takes his bowie knife to some of the sturdiest limbs of the tree of knowledge in his article on engineering education on page 770 of this issue. As all who know him might suspect, the pruning is not restrained. With one swing of the knife, such practically-labeled courses as Mine Design are stricken from the tree and transplanted to the field of Graduate Education. Emphasis on the basic sciences and the study of man through courses in history, economics, and literature are recommended to constitute an undergraduate curriculum. Such courses show the least depreciation and therefore give the student the most for his money. Partial justification for this dramatic departure from tradition is explained by the increasing number of companies giving training courses. Why make the student pay for what he can get paid for learning after graduation, the author argues. Other leading educators espouse this doctrine. Dean S. C. Hollister of Cornell, for the Committee on Adequacy and Standards of Engineering Education, recommended to ECPD in 1951 that emphasis be placed on the basic sciences. "Sifting back through the curriculum, it seems clear that instruction in the basic sciences, if taught in a manner such that knowledge of them makes available working tools, contributes the most sustaining part of the curriculum", reported the committee. Note that he would utilize practical problems from the fields of engineering in teaching the sciences. In our opinion the important thing to learn in college is how to think the engineering approach. Recitation on traditional solutions of classic problems sharpens the memory, not the ingenuity of the student. The engineering schools of the nation recognize the advantage of great emphasis on fundamentals, and the inclusion of cultural courses in the curriculum. However, industry presently requires graduates to have a substantial knowledge of the tools of the trade upon graduation. This means that the colleges are forced to pare to the bone to encompass the required studies in the time allotted. In addition, there is the limitation of student money. College educators also claim that entering freshmen are often improperly prepared in such subjects as writing and mathematics. These considerations make it difficult for the critic of the engineering graduate to make any headway with the educators. Actually with the mounting problems imposed by lower grade and more complex ores, a new breed of engineers is needed. The impetus for this new product must come from industry. If there was a concerted effort from industry for an improved type of engineer, the colleges would modify their aims to meet the demand for the kind of individual desired.

Plasma assisted surface modification methods have been used to nitride stainless steels in order to enhance hardness and therefore the lifetime of industrial components. Nevertheless, the corrosion resistance is not always preserved since it is very sensitive to the process parameters, either in implantation or in thermochemical diffusion techniques. AISI 316L stainless steel was plasma nitrided using three different techniques: Low Energy Ion Implantation (LEII), Plasma Immersion Implantation (PI3) and conventional DC pulsed plasma nitriding (DCPN). For each method several parameters were tested and some of them were selected to achieve the so called S phase of about 3 µm thickness and no nitrides precipitation. The nitrided layer was characterized with OM and SEM. Hardness was assessed on the surface with Vickers indenter and 25 g load. XRD was performed to characterize the S phase and to detect other phases if present and electrochemical corrosion tests were carried out in 3.5% NaCl solution. Although the S phase thickness in the three groups of samples was comparable, hardness was not and neither was the corrosion resistance. The PI3 samples were the hardest with the best performance in corrosion experiments, resulting in a higher breakdown potential and lower currents.

This study outlines the history of metal mining in Japan and the characteristics of the industry as they existed from 1925 to 1945. Mining and milling operations are described together with the role of the Japanese Government. A description of post-hostilities conditions and the present state of the industry is included. MANY of Japan's larger and better known mines date back to the early centuries of the Christian Era. The first stimulus to mining in Japan came through the growth of Buddhism, A. D. 600 to 700, and the attendant need for copper and other metals for temple ornaments and statues. During the Feudal period, 1333 to 1568, mine operations were expanded to meet the demand for ornament metal and for financing of campaigns. After removal of the seat of government from Kyoto to Tokyo, about 1600, the Tokugawa Shogunate placed great emphasis on mining, and many new mines were opened, some of which are still operating. Toward the end of the Tokugawa period, mining had declined sharply from its earlier peak. The easily worked, high grade portions of the orebodies had been exhausted, and the mining techniques then available could not exploit the deeper, lower grade ores. Similarly, extraction of metal from the sulphide ores presented a major problem. With the Meiji Restoration in 1868 and the rapid opening of the country to western ideas came a rejuvenation of the mining industry. Mining, milling, and smelting processes were greatly improved, resulting in the extension of development work into hitherto inaccessible portions of orebodies. The demand for metal during World War I stimulated activity throughout the industry; copper mining, particularly, expanded to a point where Japan ranked second among world producers.* During the depression following the war, mining underwent a severe contraction in activity, recovering slowly during the late 1920's only to undergo a further setback in the worldwide depression which started in 1929. Mineral output declined in 1930, but the beginning of Japanese expansion, 1931 to 1932, brought about an increase in the output of mine products starting between 1932 to 1934. Production continued to rise, the peak output being attained 1939 to 1943 in virtually all commodities. The greatest production of iron ore, chromite, and manganese was not experienced until 1944 when blocked imports, coupled with strong demands for steel, provided the needed incentive. Through necessity, Japan produced much of her mineral needs from her own mines at high cost during World War 11. Taking the 1932 to 1936 period as an average, however, Japanese mines produced only 16 pct of the iron available to industry, 8 pct of the lead, 33 pct of the zinc, and 68 pct of the copper. Nearly all of Japan's output of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc between 1925 and 1945 came from 30 to 49 pct of the mines for which production data are available; for example, 66 of 174 gold-silver mines accounted for 98 pct of the output of this group. Further analysis of mine output indicates that a large part of Japan's metal output was derived from a few large mines; about 10 gold-silver, 15 copper, 3 lead-zinc, 5 manganese, and 2 iron mines account for most of the production. Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of green- sand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of green- sand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace- element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. The microstructural relationships in dolomitic fluxed taconite pellets were studied. The influence of basicity (in the range 0.75 to 2.1) and firing temperature (to 1340°C) on the grain structure, macrostructure, and mineralogical phase relationships are described. Extensive slag bonding of hematite grains begins at temperatures between 1220 and 1230°C, and results in fundamental changes in grain structure. Successive temperature increases result in little change in grain structure until 1340°C, when extensive coalescence of the hematite grains begins.' Increasing flux additions have little effect on grain structure but greatly influence pore character. The compressive strength decreases with increasing flux addition, increases with increasing firing temperature, and is related to the macrostructure of the pellet. The compositions of the slag phases are represented on the CaO-Fe2O3-SiO2 phase diagram, and the compositional path of slag development is described.

Ever since then their properties have made them seem desirable possessions.Use of precious metals as money was the natural consequence of man's desire for them. The possibility of changing an ornament into a tool or food at any time, and the ease with which such medium of exchange could be carried and hidden, further increased the demand for the two metals.Silver was probably discovered after gold and copper, and was undoubtedly found by prehistoric man as native silver. The oldest silver articles have been discovered in Chaldean tombs and date back to 5000 B.C. The earliest ascertained producers of silver were Asia Minor and the Iberian Peninsula. The Romans worked deposits in Spain, Britain, and France. In the Middle Ages, some silver was extracted from German deposits, and near the end of the Middle Ages systematic workings were carried on at Freiberg, Schneeberg, and Joachimsthal (1).Before the discovery of the New Continent, the Aztecs and Toltecs in Mexico, and the Incas in Peru, had made extensive use of silver. In the 16th century the Mexican deposits became the largest source of the world silver."

INTRODUCTION After a mining company has discovered a mineral deposit, the problem is then how to mine and process that deposit the best way. The principal problem facing managers or engineers who must decide on mine plant size, equipment selection, and long-range scheduling is how one can optimize a property not only in terms of efficiency but also as to project duration. Mine opti¬mization is dependent upon the interaction of con¬tributing parameters which leads to maximizing the net present value (NPV) Realistic mine planning is the key, to the analysis. The process is to be used when evaluating undeveloped properties or when a complete revamping of existing facilities is scheduled The proc¬ess is not intended for detailed mine design but rather for property evaluation and feasibility studies. The derivation of the various input parameters will only be discussed to the point where a meaningful correlation can be made with the overall analysis. The interrelationship of the parameters will be the central point because most company guidelines and financial analysts have their own standards when deriving the various inputs. Assume that the data is totally acceptable and pro¬vides at least the following categories of information and guidelines- (1) mineral and waste inventory; (2) geologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical criteria; (3) topographic layout including property boundaries; (4) metallurgical flowsheet, recovery and design criteria; (5) access, water, power, and environmental base-line study; and (6) financial constraints (minimum rate of return, payback period, etc).

The Arab community is formed by around twenty countries in Africa and Asia, linked basically by a common language-Arabic - and the same religion, the muslim. They jointly occupy around 12 million square kilometers with a total population of around 140 million people. Nevertheless, these nations differ widely in their geographic area and population. Thus, while Egypt has a territory of over a million square kilometers and a population of nearly 40 million people, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have, among the three of them, less than 30, 000 square kilometers and a million inhabitants. The per capita income also vary greatly, depending on whether they are oil producing countries or not. Generally speaking, it can be said that these countries economies have been based on oil or agriculture and that in these last years, they have been making serious efforts to increase their degree of industrialization and have greatly improved their infrastructure. This trend has resulted in the development of the iron and steel industry, which is still in a stage of primary development.

"The LCDs are used in televisions, calculators, mobile phones, computers (laptops and tablets), video games and other electronic devices. The advancements in technology make obsolete these devices, causing excessive disposal of LCDs and therefore decreasing life span of landfills. In this context, the LCDs from LED LCD TVs arise as an additional source of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Thus, it is essential to develop LCDs recycling methods, beginning with the LCD characterization followed by displays processing, aiming the materials separation and using some Ore Treatment Techniques, and finally, the recovery of indium using acid leaching. The analysis methods that will be used in this work are: Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES).IntroductionLiquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology is applied in modem televisions, calculators, mobile phones, computers and a wide range of electronic devices. It has replaced Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology as the most advantageous display product, due to lower electrical power consumption, size and weight reduction, and no radiation emission [ 1]. The constant improving of LCD screen technology reflects on its growing contribution to the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE): an estimated 50 million tons of WEEE are produced every year [2]. Once the most common method of its disposal are landfills, the LCD technology therefore became an environment issue [3].LCD structure is composed by components made by different materials. In order to develop a LCD recycling methodology that gives the right destination to these materials, a previous characterization stage is required. This characterization includes a disassembly process and material identification analysis. One of the LCD components is the screen, which is composed by polymeric and glass layers. The liquid crystal glass was the starting material of this study. It contains indium in the form of indium tin oxide (ITO) film. This ITO film is deposited in the glass by a sputtering process and acts as the electrode material [4,5]. It has in its composition 90% ofln203 and 10% ofSn02 [6]."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating new techniques to improve the of mineral to recover water lost in the waste slurry, and to produce dewatered solid dewatering s suitable for disposal. As part of this investigation, a study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of dewatering Alaska placer effluent. Based on the laboratory tests, preliminary field tests were conducted on three placer mines in Alaska. At these mines, the water recovered from the placer effluent (250 to 23,000 NTU) exhibited turbidities of 20 to 240 NTU. In the second year of the project, a large-scale dewatering unit was set up at a mine located in the Livengood district. The feed, at flow rates up to 935 gpm, was mixed with dilute PEO solution in a flexible plastic hose with and without static mixers. Feed to the dewatering unit generally ranged between 300 and 26,500 NTU and required PEO dosages of 0.02 to 0.14 lb per 1,000 gal to produce water from the screen underflow with turbidities of 20 to 50 NTU. During this period, a small unit was also operated at Dow rams of 10 to 25 gpm at sewn sites throughout Alaska, with the effluent from four of the sites being dewatered successfully.

The Bureau of Mines located and examined 292 burning coal refuse banks throughout the Nation's coal-producing regions in 1968. These coal waste fires, extending over 3,200 acres, produce poisonous, acrid gases and particulate matter that pose a threat to health and safety in the surrounding areas, damage vegetation, and cause the deterioration of nearby structures and buildings. Methods of extinguishing coal refuse fires are discussed, and an approach to eliminating future occurrences of these fires is presented.

Introduction In the course of a programme of research on beryllium in progress in these laboratories, knowledge of the recrystallization temperature became necessary. As the information is not available in the literature, the determination of this temperature for metallic beryllium was undertaken. By the reduction of grain size through working and recrystallization and the probable simultaneous induction of preferred orientation, it was hoped to improve the working properties of beryllium at lower temperatures. The recrystallization temperature is usually determined by observing the lowest temperature of annealing at which new crystals are formed in severely cold-worked metal or alloys. This temperature is profoundly influenced by the following factors: the purity of the metal, in the case of an element, or the composition of the alloy; the degree of straining or working; the temperature of straining; the original grain size; and the time held at the annealing temperature. The observed temperature is lowered by higher purity, more severe straining, lower temperature of working, smaller original grain size, and longer time of annealing. Beryllium presents special difficulties in that the percent elongation in tension is effectively zero, so that ordinary squeezing or rolling was not possible. A possible means of straining was suggested by the fact that indentation hardness tests could be made. It was known from earlier work that the metal could be worked at elevated temperatures, so that working at the lowest feasible temperature and quenching might also be a means of producing strain. The purity of the metal is also a point of some uncertainty in the case of beryllium. Losano has prepared 99.96% Be which appears to be the best reported. Distilled metal used in the present work approached this purity. However, by analogy with other metals, residual impurities may have a pronounced effect on the recrystallization. Further purification of beryllium would evidently entail considerable difficulties due to the highly reactive nature of the metal, and was not attempted.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral because of its unique properties and low cost. Strictly defined, kaolin is the name given to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates of which kaolinite is the most common mineral (1). Through common usage the mineral, kaolinite, is called "kaolin" or "china clay". In 1972 over 4, 000, 000 tons of kaolin will be beneficiated and shipped by domestic producers. By far the largest user of kaolin is the paper industry which utilizes approximately 65 to 70 per cent of the total production. Kaolin is used in paper as a filler in the interstices of the sheet and as a coating to impart smoothness, gloss, brightness, and printability to the paper. The rubber industry is also a large user of kaolin where it is used as a filler because it adds strength, abrasion resistance, and rigidity to both natural and synthetic rubber goods. Kaolin is used as an extender in paints because it is chemically inert, has a high covering power, gives desirable flow properties, and is low in cost. In ceramics, kaolin is used in whitewares, tile, insulators, refractories, and in some face brick where a white color is desired. Kaolin is also used extensively in plastics as a filler in thermosetting and thermoplastic mixes to give smoother surfaces, a more attractive finish, good dimensional stability, and resistance to chemical attack. Many other process industries use kaolin as a filler, suspending medium, or for color improvement.

Improving the mineral industry's tarnished image describes in a nut- shell the reason why the Speakers Bureau of the Tucson Subsection of the AIME was formed. Let's go back in time about 3 years to the fall of 1971. Literally thousands of bills detrimental to the mineral industry were being introduced into Congress and State Legislatures. Unfortunately, many were being passed and signed into law. Clean air and water, zero pollution, preserve the environment, ecology, biodegradeable, wilderness were the words that the self- styled ecologists and environmentalists were preaching. The mineral industry either sat mute or in place of acting, reacted in a way certain to attract a maximum amount of bad publicity with a minimum amount of rhetoric. A mining company president, for example, commenting on the primary air standards in Arizona was reported by the press as having said, "we'll shut all the smelters down and put thousands of Arizonans out of work if we have to meet the Arizona standards." Or another defending a poorly planned highly visible open pit nonmetallics operation, "we'll take the whole mountain down if we want to, and nobody can stop us" and still another manager of Operations, "the bottom line is all that counts, to hell with all of this environmental nonsense."

In 2003, a high-temperature pressure leaching circuit to treat copper sulfide concentrates was commissioned at the copper/molybdenum operation at Bagdad, AZ. In late 2007, a medium-temperature pressure leaching circuit was commissioned at the Morenci mine in Arizona. The Morenci circuit was shut down in mid-2008, following a fire in the autoclave circuit. The onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008 resulted in significant changes to the operating profile in the Southwestern United States with respect to concentrates production, concentrates treatment, acid production and acid consumption. As a result of these changes, the Morenci concentrator was shut down, and the pressure leaching circuit remained offline. In late 2014, the increasing acid requirements in the Southwestern United States prompted a reevaluation of the Morenci concentrate leaching facilities. As a result, the pressure leaching circuit was restarted in high-temperature (200 °C) mode in May 2015 and has operated successfully for three years since recommissioning. This paper describes the current pressure leaching circuit configuration and the factors leading to the successful application of copper sulfide concentrate leaching at this location.

The Silica (SME) Technology has been utilized on three separate projects focusing upon the stabilization of mercury-contaminated materials: at the Mother Lode Mine in Oregon, the Sulfur Bank Mercury Mine in California and at a former chloralkali plant in British Columbia. Each of the projects relied primarily on the results collected via EPA Method 1311 TCLP, with additional tests such as SPLP, humidity cell tests and other supporting tests employed as well. Both technical and economic performance of the silica-based technology was evaluated as well as that of competing technologies in some cases. Results established that in each of the three projects an SME chemical dosage rate of 3% chemical by weight of soil/sludge was the optimal ratio required to achieve project treatment objectives, TCLP test results exhibited a reduction in the leachable mercury from the treated materials ranging between 75% and 99% as compared to untreated material, satisfying the technical objectives for each project, Project costs ranged from $l5.00 - $18.26 per metric ton.
