As remaining gold deposits tend to become more refractory, some form of oxidative pre-treatment involving hydro or pyrometallurgy is necessary to maintain high metal recoveries. These pre-treatments include pressure oxidation, bio-leaching or roasting. In the past, the primary criterion for selection of oxidative pre-treatment relied mainly on the extent of gold recovery and relative economics. In this study, a different approach has been adopted, ie the quantitative determination of environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment processes bio-leaching, roasting and pressure oxidation to assess which had the least impact on the environment. By establishing the environmental performance of processes, waste minimisation can be addressed early in process selection. Using mass balances, the environmental theme method was applied to determine the performance, on the basis of gold treated, of the oxidative pre-treatment processes of selected plants. No clear trend was observed in the overall impacts of each of seven plants, with all but one of the environmental evaluation indices being of the same order of magnitude; this was probably due to masking effects arising from the large variations in feed composition, tonnage, and gold levels. Within each type of pre-oxidation plant however, certain trends were detectable. For instance, irrespective of plant size, ore composition or mineralogy, for the bio-leaching and pressure oxidation units, the general order of environmental impact from greatest to least was sequentially toxicity, acidification potential, depletion of resources, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement. For the roasters the acidification potential was the most significant. Determination of the environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment of a hypothetical ore in a plant of fixed tonnage was undertaken to remove the possible masking effects of variables associated with feeds of different mineralogy, gold tenor and tonnage. The bio-leaching process gave a marginally better performance than pressure oxidation, the roasting process the worst, although there was not a great difference between them. The decreasing order of contribution to the environmental index was acidification potential, toxicity, resource depletion, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement for bio-leaching and pressure oxidation; whereas it was acidification potential, solid waste generation, toxicity, resource depletion and greenhouse enhancement for roasting. Since the major contributor to the environmental index was the acidification potential, the environmental performance of treatment processes for the acidic effluents was calculated. After neutralisation of the net acid resulting from bio-oxidation and pressure oxidation, and the application of various scrubbing and product formation processes for the sulphur dioxide from the roasting process, it was shown that pressure oxidation gave a marginally better performance than bio-leaching, ahead of roasting. This study demonstrated the potential for the development of a predictive tool which could be used in determining the environmental performance, and thus the selection, optimisation, and improvement of pre-oxidation processes for least impact on the environment. These would allow operation of these processes within defined environmental performance limits and decisions regarding the desirability of processing various parts of a heterogeneous orebody to be made on environmental grounds.

Implementation of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 is negatively affecting production of coal used for generating electric power in Indiana and elsewhere in the Midwest. Required reduction of sulfur compounds from gas streams, or flue gas desulfurization (FGD), as mandated by these laws has encouraged installation of wet limestone scrubbers at many generating plants. Increasingly stringent requirements that will begin in 2000 are expected to necessitate even more extensive use of such scrubbers. Indiana has large deposits of limestone-the major consumable alkaline raw material for scrubbers-that can meet an expected demand of several million tons per year. Limestones are not, however, all the same. Different limestone units behave quite differently when used as scrubbing agents under differing conditions in actual practice. Decisions about FGD scrubber details would be more meaningful if made with thorough knowledge of which rock units contain the most efficient FGD limestones and which sites of suitable stone are located nearest to power plants. Even though abundant carbonate rocks occur in Indiana, their suitability in scrubbing systems has received little attention, and few attempts have been made to match details of stone resources to the needs of various utility scrubbing systems. Optimization of the fit between geologic characteristics of the existing limestones and prospective scrubber systems should allow for greatly improved planning and operation of FGD systems with attendant lower overall costs. Electric utilities have developed computer models to predict FGD system operations (i.e., the FGD-PRISM model of the Electric Power Research Institute). These models require geologic data such as reactivity that are commonly unavailable. We generated data needed for the model during a cooperative effort among the Indiana Department of Commerce, the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS), The Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IP&L), and the Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association. Our goal was to provide missing geologic details of Indiana scrubber-stone raw materials and apply them to the FGD-PRISM model to provide general guidance to determine which geologic units can provide stone for most efficient sulfur removal. Results of the model for selected limestones and parameters specific to one IP&L generating plant were calculated. Geologic data generated may be applied to other generating operations, and our examples should help other utilities optimize their FGD strategies. Several hundred samples from more than 30 active quarries were collected and their physical properties determined. Grindability values ranged from 7.2 to 21.7 for 50 selected samples. Acid-insoluble residues of less than 1% to 13% were found. Dissolution rates as an index of reactivity varied over two orders of magnitude for the selected set of samples. These data plus chemical analyses and Ca/Mg ratios were entered into a generic scrubber model to determine rates of stone use and scrubber efficiency for various stone. Removal of SO2 was projected by this model to range from 89% to 98% with stone utilization rates from 91% to 93%. Excellent scrubber stone sources were found in Mississippian rocks in central and southern Indiana. Rocks of the Ste. Genevieve and Salem Limestones were especially efficient. Even small amounts of dolomite, clay minerals, and quartz diminished a stone's usefulness for FGD scrubbing.

INTRODUCTION The demand for specialty metals in industrial applications is in it's healthiest state since the late 1970'8, and several specific markets are recording record sales. Such metals as gold, silver, zirconim., titanium, beryllium, gallium, germanium, the platinum group, and the lanthanides accounted for sales in excess of $2 billion in 1985 among the end uses covered in this report. Although specialty metals as a group have suffered the effects of recessionary pressures in the past, these metals have proved more resiliant than such large volume metals as copper and nickel. This is due to the unique physical properties they possess which makes the threat of substitution or replacement through technological development uneconomic. The outlook for these specialty metals is optimistic in electronics, catalysts, ceramics, and alloys, and their specialty status results .in a combined average annual growth in demand of 7% through 1990. WHAT MAKES THESE METALS SPECIAL? Such characteristics as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, catalytic activity, thermal stability, and optical properties allow the term specialty to be applied to these metals. More importantly, all of these metals possess more than one of these qualities, as shown in Table 1. [ ] These five major functions are important in the end uses for these metals, although the specific applications vary somewhat. Conductivity in term of low or high electrical resistance is of obvious importance to electronics manufacturers. Producers of circuit boards or semiconductors require such metals as gold, palladium, platinum, and gallium due to their low electrical resistivity. However, these producers also require such metals as beryllium in the oxide form for insulation components because of the compound's low electrical conductivity. Although the lanthanides' conductive characteristics are not particularly attractive in electronics, they are of great importance to alloy manufacturers producing permanent magnets for automotive and computer applications. Corrosion and wear resistant properties are extremely attractive to a number of end-use industries, particularly in view of the estimate by the United States Bureau of Mines that $10 to $50 billion in losses are experienced by U.S. industry due to equipment corrosion and $100 billion due to equipment wear. The strength of high purity titanium and zirconium make these metals the obvious choice for corrosion and wear resistance particularly in the chemical processing industry, where the ability to maintain integrity in corrosive environments is a must. Heat exchangers, nuclear control rods, and a number of parts in jet engines have benefited greatly from the use of these metals. However, such other specialty metals as beryllium, and the lanthanides also improve the wear or corrosion resistance in various products. For example, a beryllium-copper alloy contact maintains it's spring like character, and does not loose this character after repeated use, which could result in the loss of an electrical contact. Lanthanide, in the form of cerium oxide, is commonly employed in alloys used to produce catalytic converter casings for the purpose of reducing damage by corrosive road salt. In some instances, the catalytic activity of several of the specialty metals assists in the economic production of other materials. Inco Copper Cliff Smelter commissioned two new Inco flash furnaces in 1991/1993 as part of its S02 abatement program. Each flash furnace is equipped with a fluid bed dryer. The ~ 12 wt% water content in the concentrate filter cake, flux, reverts and sludge is removed in the fluid bed dryer. The dry solids are discharged from the dryer together with exhaust gases into the baghouses where they are separated. The dry solids are transferred to four storage bins. In September 2003, for the first time since startup in 1991/1993, a large amount of elemental sulfur accumulation was discovered on the walls, roofs and floors of the outlet side of the baghouse chambers. Several baghouse fires were experienced during cleaning and conducting maintenance work in the elemental sulfur contaminated baghouses. Laboratory scale test work at the Inco research lab was conducted to understand the mechanism. A plant solution to minimize elemental sulfur formation was implemented with success. This paper summarizes the efforts to understand and minimize elemental sulfur formation in the baghouse chambers.

INDUSTRIAL specialization has rapidly created a demand for new and better alloys. A more thorough understanding of the requirements of specific industries and the discovery of processes by which it has been made possible to utilize certain metallic elements in larger quantities, together with greater purity in most virgin metals, has resulted in a great increase in the number and variety of alloys. This increase in the number of elements entering into non-ferrous alloy manufacture has increased the contamination in secondary metals, as received by the smelter. In order to successfully refine scrap of a much more complex nature it has been necessary for the smelter to install new equipment and to constantly search for new methods of refining as well as to improve the methods already in use. In some instances it is largely responsible for specialization in the secondary metal industry. It is usually necessary to remove the contaminating impurities in scrap or eliminate to a degree not objectionable, no matter how introduced. In order to know what metals or elements are of an objectionable nature, the smelter must make a study of the effect of single elements and combinations of elements on many of the physical and mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, color, hardness, casting soundness, etc. The smelter of secondary metals must be able to utilize scrap materials of all kinds, for, sooner or later, most fabricated metal parts and the waste products formed during the process of manufacture find their way to the smelter. In addition, the smelter, in contracting for salvaged material from the producer, gets some undesirable and unusual materials. The value of secondary metals and the importance of their recovery has increased in recent years and it is no longer sufficient to recover the base metal only, such as copper from copper-bearing material, but it is essential that other elements present be recovered and converted into useful form. This paper will deal not with the smelting and refining or separation of impurities from secondary metals but an attempt will be made to show the increased value of metal scrap when properly segregated and in a less contaminated condition. In an effort to produce less expensive titanium sheet via roll compaction, the room temperature compaction behavior of titanium sponge granules (99.9% pure, Alfa Aesar) was studied under uniaxial die compaction. The titanium sponge granules were irregularly shaped, with a high degree of porosity, having a maximum particle size of 3mm. Manual die compaction was conducted using a Carver hand press, in a hardened tool steel die with 12.61 mm inner diameter. Uniaxial die compaction in a hardened tool steel die with 9.50 mm inner diameter was also performed using a Gleeble® 3500 thermal-mechanical simulation testing system which allowed for controlled deformation rates. Compaction behavior of the titanium sponge was studied using well-established compaction equations (Heckel, Panelli-Filho and Ge), and it was observed that compaction rate influences the room temperature compaction behavior of this material. The Heckel analysis of the titanium sponge showed that the behavior of the material could be analyzed in two compaction pressure regimes. In the low pressure regime (<100 MPa) the granules exhibited high compressibility, while; in the high pressure regime (>100 MPa) lower compressibility of the titanium sponge was observed.

The resource quantity of the low rank coalbed methane (CBM) accounts for 47% of the total resource quantity of CBM in China. Compared with the exploration and development of the high rank CBM in Qinshui Basin, China and the low rank CBM in Powder River Basin, USA and Albert Basin, Canada, the exploration and development of the low rank CBM are still in the initial test stage. In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the mining geological conditions such as that the Huanglong Jurassic Coalfield is largely situated in the hills and gullies zones, and the coal reservoir has the features such as the low metamorphic degree, large coal seam thickness, simple coal matrix texture, high permeability and small CBM content and so on, it discusses the key technologies such as the development pattern of CBM, well location arrangement, drilling and well completion technology and fracturing technology and so on. It indicates that the underbalanced drilling and the cavity well completion based on the reservoir protection will be the development directions of the CBM development technology in this area.

In this research assisted leaching of chalcopyrite using sodium peroxodisulfate was studied. Electrochemical techniques such as Tafel analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to investigate the surface reactions of a chalcopyrite electrode in the presence and absence of Na2S2O8. According to the results, addition of sodium peroxodisulfate increases the current exchange of the corrosion process and prevents the formation of a passive layer on the surface of the electrode. EIS tests show the trans-passive dissolution of the passive layer on the chalcopyrite electrode in presence of Na2S2O8. Equivalent electrochemical circuits were modeled for Na2S2O8-free and -containing solutions and the model parameters were compared to determine the effect of S2O8 2− on chalcopyrite dissolution. Copper dissolution from pure chalcopyrite mineral and chalcopyrite concentrate was carried out using 15 g/L sulfuric acid solution with and without Na2S2O8. Simultaneous presence of 10 g/L ferric ion and 40 g/L peroxodisulfate salt results in about 40 and 18% of Cu extraction from chalcopyrite concentrate and pure chalcopyrite mineral, after 96 h, respectively.

This is the first in a series of studies commissioned by the European Environment Agency that aim to raise awareness of the use of economic instruments and assess their effectiveness. The emphasis is on sharing good practice and increasing knowledge and understanding across European countries in this emerging policy area. A methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of economic instruments has been developed and this will examine whether the inclusion of economic instruments in complex policy packages can improve the overall performance, particularly as a prevention tool in terms of resource use and waste generation The focus for this initial study is the use of aggregate taxes in four EU countries which include the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden and the UK so that a range of experiences (e.g. geographical, political etc.) can be included. The findings will be used to inform and influence future policy development in other EEA countries. The methodological approach is divided into two main sections: - Technical analysis, which covers quantitative and qualitative analysis. - Process design, i.e. who should be involved when, where and how. Process design is essential if the full learning benefits are to be gained from the technical analysis, which is the ultimate objective of these evaluations.

Several small mines are producing refractory gold concentrates in Zimbabwe and, owing to the small scale of most of these operations, their output is processed in a central custom roaster in Kwekwe. Owing to the wide variations in the feed to the roaster, the efficiency of the old Edwards roaster is deemed unsatisfactory with gold recovery from concentrate as low as 70%, and alternative processes were evaluated to improve this situation. Various processes for oxidizing refractory arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrates to liberate gold prior to cyanidation are known. In practice, only two have to date met with wide industrial acceptance, pressure oxidation and roasting. Owing to the ·high arsenic and antimony levels of some concentrates in Zimbabwe, the only viable roasting alternative would be two-stage air-roasting of concentrates in two reactors, as practiced at Giant Yellowknife, Campbell Red Lake and New Consort. This process, however, creates an arsenic disposal problem, and produces gas of fairly low SO2 content, requiring a large gas handling system for acid production. On the other hand, there are currently four commercial pressure oxidation plants treating refractory gold ores (McLaughlin, Mercur, Getchell and Goldstrike) and three treating concentrates (Sao Bento, Porgera, Campbell). One other concentrate oxidation plant is being constructed (Con), and several more are being considered.

Creighton Mine is part of the mining history of Sudbury with more than 100 years of operation. Currently the deeper levels of the mine are reaching the 8000 ft level without implementation of mechanical refrigeration system as a result of the use of the Natural Heat Exchange Area (NHEA) over the past decades. The NHEA of Creighton Mine is part of an old block caving area divided into 4 blocks of trenches that were used to extract the ore. Currently, it is used year round to condition the outside temperature before the airflow enters the fresh air system of the mine. As the mine is progressing deeper, underground temperatures in the lower levels are starting to approach the limit of Vale?s guidelines for working in heat. This paper presents the study developed to improve the management of the NHEA to obtain cooler temperatures at the intake of the ventilation system and outlines the impact to the mine in terms of the additional level(s) that could be operated underground without the use of mechanical refrigeration. This is another of the efforts currently under development for energy conservation and to reduce the capital and operational costs of Creighton Mine while extending the expected life of the mine.

The subject article is an excellent comparison between two potential oxidants, molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, as used in the Palangana field at the time of the trials. The tests showed no advantage to using hydrogen peroxide; however, it would be unwise to generalize that the experience in these trials was universally true. During the time of the work cited, extremely high levels of an unusual impurity were recycling in the lixiviant, which substance was a catastrophically destructive catalyst for peroxide. Since this material was not removed before recycle, it was not surprising that much of the peroxide fed was decomposing in the feed piping and never made contact with the uranium mineralization. Under these conditions, indeed, peroxide showed no improvement over oxygen. This is, however, perhaps the most adverse environment encountered to date in US in-situ uranium leaching. In other operations, peroxide has proved advantageous where two factors have been exploited: 1.Despite the tendency for Hz02 to decompose to water and oxygen in the in-situ leach environment, its higher redox potential before decomposition has provided higher leach rates. In some formulations, overloading beyond the O2 saturation equivalent with peroxide has allowed higher oxidant levels, and higher leaching rates, when overloading with molecular O2, led to vapor-locking.

In an industry that is data-hungry and increasingly international in its outlook, the role of the New Zealand Government in facilitating exploration and mining activity here presents unique challenges. All things being equal, the Regime itself should result in æefficient outcomesÆ, however central to this rational economic tenet are the assumptions that the regime is in keeping with the times, other legislation works in tandem with it, and that those who administer the regime have the knowledge and experience to apply the rules wisely. Following the Crown Minerals review in late 2003, a shift in emphasis from Crown Minerals æmanaging the ActÆ towards proactively æmanaging the mineral estateÆ for greater benefit for all New Zealanders means that these assumptions are being increasingly challenged and addressed through a variety of initiatives. These include improved access to relevant data sets, minimisation of red tape and compliance costs, increasing emphasis on permit holder compliance with work programme obligations, changes to the Minerals Programme and regulations, closer collaboration with and representation to other government departments and councils, and additional recruitment of industry-experienced staff. This presentation will highlight aspects of these initiatives, and examine how they will collectively contribute to facilitating future exploration and mining activity in New Zealand.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) operates 13 excavators, 3 travelling stackers and 4 mobile slew conveyors in their three open cuts in the Latrobe Valley. The majority of these machines have been designed and constructed to a German design code current at the date of order. The SECV has always ensured that the machines were manufactured and erected to the appropriate standards. The SECV has a policy of having all machines inspected by an independent inspector every two years. These inspections are based on those carried out in Germany. The inspections have been carried out by inspectors from Germany who have the necessary experience to do similar work in German open cuts. Major faults found during the inspections have been repaired, however,the gradual breakdown of corrosion protection system has continued. The structures on some machines have areas of bad corrosion. This, coupled with wear on major mechanical equipment, would require an extensive outage to overhaul the machines. Refurbishment of Hazelwood Power Station will result in higher levels of production and extended life for the station. This will require improvement in the total output from Morwell Open Cut (MOC). To meet this increased coal demand, the open cut equipment will need to operate more efficiently and for a longer period of life.

The useful minerals can be subdivided into two large groups. One comprises those which are mined because of their chemical composition. They represent the natural resources of certain materials or of energy (coal). The second group is used not because of their chemical composition but because of certain physical properties or combinations of physical properties. A large number of minerals are mined because of their hardness, their electrical and thermal properties, their color or plasticity. There has been increasing recognition of the value of mineral synthesis during the past 30 years. This is illustrated by the development of improved aircraft spark plugs and chemical porcelain about the time of the first World War. During World War II the impact of crystal chemistry upon ceramics became most pronounced. New ceramic bodies were tailor-made, such as those designed with a high dielectric constant and low power loss, for use in high-voltage, high-frequency communication. In the field of refractories special materials were needed for unusual heat-resisting service in jet and rocket engines, and in the processing of fissionable materials. The Minfurn is a novel carbon-regeneration furnace developed at Mintek. It combines the advantages of direct resistive heating in a vertical-tube furnace with those of continuous operation, in a furnace whose capital, operating, and maintenance costs compare favourably with those of conventional rotary kilns. After successful tests under experimental conditions on carbons containing different contaminants, a 3 kg/h unit was installed on the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant at the Klipwal Gold Mine near Piet Retief, where it has been operating at, on average, 123 per cent of its design capacity. Since the installation of the Minfurn, monthly average losses of dissolved gold of less than 0,02 p.p.m. have been maintained for several successive months for the first time since January 1989. It is also possible that the monthly average residue values have been reduced. Further improvements to the carbon circuit are possible, and the possibility of making further savings by a reduction in the carbon-throughput rate still needs to be investigated. The mathematical modeling of the furnace has progressed to the stage where the future scale-up and design of the Minfurn can be carried out by simulation of the performance of different designs, and choosing the design that yields the desired performance.

Vibratory drivers have been used since the 1930s to drive and extract piles. Vibratory pile drivers have the capability of significantly decreasing pile installation time, especially in granular type soils. However, they have not been widely accepted because of the uncertainty in estimating the bearing capacity of the driven pile. When driving bearing piles, the industry standard method for obtaining load carrying capacity of a pile installed with a vibratory driver is to redrive with an impact hammer. The advantage of improved productivity is lost with the redrive procedure. Currently, there is no other method to predict the capacity of these bearing piles installed with a vibratory driver. The Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory (NCEL) is making progress towards being able to estimate the bearing capacity of these piles. This paper describes field testing and corresponding analytical modeling of the vibratory driver-pile-soil system. The following sections describe the development of the numerical model and techniques for collecting field data. A discussion of the prediction of the pile driving process based on field test data is followed by suggestions as to the additional work that should be done to further verify the model to a point where it can be used with confidence.

The Office of Price Stabilization broke the copper price loggerhead between the U. S. and Chile when it permitted copper wire and brass mills to add to their ceiling prices 80 pct of the increase in cost of foreign copper above the 27 1/2 cents per pound specified in the agreement with Chile. Another step forward in the processing of taconite seems to have been made with the patenting of a process for the strengthening of taconite pellets. The patent was issued to Fred D. De Vaney and assigne to the Erie Mining Co., of Hibbing, Minn. Strength of the pellets is improved by adding from one to five pounds of starch or sodium silicate. A new iron ore deposit discovered on Vancouver Island will start producing soon, and is expected to yield 2 million tons of magnetite over its span of operation. A new mill will be built by the Argonaut Construction Co., of San Francisco, at the deposits of the Utah Construction Co., its parent organization. The Organization for European Economic Cooperation banned the use of nickel and nickel alloy in the manufacture of about 500 products in an attempt to conserve nonferrous metals in short supply. Some 18 members of the organization have already volunteered to restrict nickel consumption.

"Copper occurs in the crust of the earth, predominantly, as sulphides. Among the copper sulphide minerals, the chalcopyrite is the most abundant and the most refractory to the conventional oxidative processes. This work aims at developing an electrolytic process for treating a copper sulphides flotation concentrate, more precisely chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and bornite (Cu5FeS4) in the percentages of 70 and 30%, respectively.This paper presents a low-cost operational electroleaching process for treating copper sulphides flotation concentrates, with a high chalcopyrite content. This research practical work aims at improving the copper extraction from that sulphide mineral, in a relatively short time with low-operating cost taking into consideration the influence of a cationic surfactant. The electrolyte of the electrolytic reaction system was a 2,0 mol.L-1 NaCl solution containing CTAB, a cationic surfactant. The electroleaching system contains one DSATM (dimensionally stable anode) anode and two nickel or copper foams (threedimension electrodes. During the electroleaching process the chloride ions are oxidized to chlorine at the anode surface, which in contact with the aqueous phase generate enough hypochlorite ions to oxidize chalcopyrite.The copper ions released from the chemical oxidation process are reduced at the cathode surface as metallic copper."
