Surface mining has been used primarily where deposits of minerals were exposed or close to the surface. Surface mining can, therefore, be considered the oldest branch of mining. As the most accessible deposits became uneconomical because of the lack of suitable high capacity conveying systems, deep mining took its place. Only in the twentieth century was this trend reversed as high capacity production and conveying systems were developed. This rapid development was triggered by the steadily increasing demand for raw materials and fossil fuels, as well as by the ever increasing ratio between overburden and deposits.

"Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. IntroductionGeographic information systems (GIS) are a relatively new tool in the mining industry. Although they have existed for a number of years, the potential of GIS for mine management and planning is only beginning to be investigated and exploited. The unique spatial capabilities of GIS make them particularly wellsuited for use in mining, where spatial information is fundamental to the processes of mineral exploration, mine development, and environmental reclamation. A number of potential applications for GIS in the mining industry have been identified, and they are widely used for exploration and reclamation. The use of a GIS as a platform for the development of mine planning routines and software remains an interesting, but as of yet unexplored, application of this technology."

This paper presents a method of predicting the recovery and performance of a five-spot steam injection project, in which a realistic approach to pattern sweepout efficiencies is made. Published methods for radial systems were modified for the five-spot pattern by approximating the stream lines with straight lines radiating from the injection well and then converging to the producing well. In each radial segment, the position of the steam front and the temperature profile ahead of the steam front were determined by heat balance equations, which included an estimation of heat losses to surrounding formations. The location of the saturations behind the cold water front was determined from a Buckley-Leverett solution to the material balance equation. Results from this program show steamflood recovery in a five-spot pattern to be considerably less than that predicted for true linear or radial flow systems. For a specific reservoir containing 900-cp oil, a steamflood in a purely radial flow system was predicted to recover more than 75 percent of the original oil in place when 2 PV of water had been injected as steam. A five-spot steamflood with otherwise identical properties was predicted to recover 10 percent of the original oil in place when 0.15 PV of water had been injected as steam and to recover almost no oil thereafter. A cold water five-spot flood in this system was predicted to recover approximately W percent of the oil in place with I PV of water injected. For a five-spot pattern in an example reservoir with 10-cp oil, steam injection similarly showed lower ultimate recovery than water injection but no improvement in recovery rule. Introduction The thermal recovery method considered in this study is steam injection in a five-spot pattern. Pattern steam injection has been given little attention in the past, possibly because of some rather obvious disadvantages. Unless steam temperature is maintained throughout the entire swept area, the process will revert to simple waterflood with all heat being lost prior to reaching the oil bank. Also, the oil viscosity reduction takes place near the steam front and not around the producing wellbore, so that low producing rates must still be endured. This is the reason for the success of the steam stimulation, or cyclic injection, in which the fluids are produced from the same well used for injection. On the other hand, steamflooding can offer some advantages. Oil displacement is by four methods: (1) mechanical displacement by the condensed water, (2) viscosity reduction of the crude oil, (3) swelling of the crude oil, and (4) distillation of the crude oil in the steam zone. Although dependent upon the crude, laboratory experiments have shown displacements up to 80 percent by steamflooding. In addition, steam is a good heat transport medium, since it is cheap and has a high heat content. Previous Investigations Previous publications have reported methods for predicting recovery in a steamflood for linear and radial systems. Since no pattern sweep efficiency is taken into consideration, the recovery even from a radial system must be greater than from more realistic geometries such as the very common five-spot patterns. Probably the broadest coverage is given by Willman who reported experimental results and offered a method of predicting recovery for a radial flow system. They concluded that both hot water and steam injection recover more oil than an ordinary waterflood, and that steam injection could yield recoveries "as much as 100 percent greater than by water flood." They also concluded that both the heat requirements for a reservoir and the residual oil remaining in the reservoir after steam injection were independent of the amount of oil originally in place, that short exploitation times were desirable, and that a high percentage of net sand in the reservoir with a high initial oil saturation was desirable. The method assumes that the flood occurs in three concentric cylindrical zones: (1) an inner steam zone, (2) a central hot water zone, and (3) an outer cold waterflood zone. Displacement in the steam zone is based on laboratory-determined residual oil saturations while the hot water and cold water zones use the conventional Buckley-Leverett equations. "Modeling of big faults or weak planes of strong and weak discontinuities is of major importance to assess the Geomechanical behaviour of mining/civil tunnel, reservoirs etc. For modelling fractures in Geomechanics, prior art has been limited to Interface Elements which suffer from numerical instability and where faults are required to be aligned with element edges. In this paper, we consider comparative study on finite elements for capturing strong discontinuities by means of elemental (EFEM) and nodal enrichments (XFEM) for Geomechanical applications. For general fracture scenarios, Oliver et al. (2008) have demonstrated advantages of EFEM over XFEM for including: (a) ease of modeling in any standard finite element code due to the possibility of static condensation, (b) higher accuracy in some cases for coarse meshes, and, (c) a reduced computational cost. However, there has been no work that considers cohesive fractures in Geomechanics. We present a numerical analysis based on a linear constitutive model and linear triangular elements for the bulk and a linear constitutive behaviour for the fault for a representative set of fault planes in a circular tunnel made in rock mass. In the numerical examples we consider both well-traced and bad-traced meshes. We focus on traction profile analysis for both EFEM and XFEM, since that is crucial to understand the cohesive fracture behaviour specially rock joint. Therefore in each case, shear, normal and stress ratio are compared across the two methods along the fault plane. This is the first such work that compares XFEM and EFEM behaviour for Geomechanics problems.For the considered class of problems and the sharp penalization approach without regularizations adopted, it can be observed that accuracy and robustness of EFEM may strongly depend on the fault orientation with respect to the element edges, while, XFEM is independent of fault alignment with element edges. It has been also observed that, with mesh refinement model, stress oscillation completely removed with XFEM however EFEM fails to provide oscillation free results with finer mesh in case bad-traced model. We also performed error analysis and found that in case of bad-traced mesh the average error in the XFEM is 84% smaller than of EFEM and for XFEM the error goes to zero with increasing mesh resolution, while for EFEM the error increases with mesh resolution. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate that, XFEM performs better than EFEM in terms of accuracy and rate of convergence with marginal increase in computational cost. This work hence provides novel insights on the application of XFEM and EFEM in Geomechanics."

Trucks are the primary means of bulk material transport in Open Pit hard rock mines worldwide. They are considered to be the most- flexible system available. The large number of trucks used in some mines provides flexibility. Spare units allow for the reduced availability of the single units. Trucks have however very poor energy efficiency. Only 40% of the consumed energy is for transport of the payload, the remaining energy is required to move the dead load of the trucks. With the increase in cost, pressure, mine operators are now looking for alternative methods to make their operation more economical. Energy conservation and increasing haulage distances and uphill haulage are major factors in many well established operations. New methods have already proven themselves as more economical alternatives. Belt conveyors are an alternative means of transport with much higher energy efficiency. They use up to 80% of the consumed energy for transportation of the payload. Energy costs for conveyors are 30% of the energy costs for trucks on level transport and as little as 15% for elevating payloads. Belt conveyors require much fear spare parts and wear components than trucks. A factor of one to two times applies for level transport and ten to twenty times for uphill transport.

A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.

This compilation of statistics covering competitive fuels consumed for heating of residential and commercial buildings is in response to numerous requests for data of this nature to show the relative changes in the demands for the different fuels in recent years. The Nunavik Nickel project began ramp-up of a new ore body (Expo) in November 2014. This new deposit is significantly more competent than the previous ore type milled (i.e., the plant moved from a feed with a BWI of 12.2 kWh/t to predominantly material with a BWI of 19.6 kWh/t). Despite circuit changes made in advance of the Expo ore ramp-up (grinding media size, mill loading/power draw, and cyclone configuration) the throughput of the plant was bottlenecked at 90% of targeted throughput with multiple stoppages to grind-out the primary mill due to excessive circulating loads. During this time, the secondary milling circuit was under-utilised: therefore the focus for debottlenecking plant production became increasing the product size of primary milling. Given the scope of changes already made to the circuit, it was decided to test the mill in open circuit. The milling changes were modelled using the Molycop Tools package to identify potential problems. In the modelling and plant trial it was apparent that the ball size in the secondary grinding circuit was inadequate, resulting in pebbling. The power draw of the secondary mill was brought up to minimize pebbling and the average ball size was increased. The switch to open circuit primary milling permitted a significant augmentation in plant tonnage. While the overall grinding efficiency decreased using the open circuit configuration, the ability to increase throughput made it the clear operating choice.

Bentonites and bentonite containing sealing materials are used since many years for sealing purposes in foundation, dike construction, hydraulic engineering and landfill construction, especially for encapsulation of old waste deposits In the near future compacted bentonites will be important components of multi-barrier systems for dry charge of old mines, for underground disposal of hazardous or radioactive wastes. Because of their exceptional physical, structural and chemical properties, bentonites are offering manifold possibilities to protect the environment against the negative effects of dumping grounds. Often the compliance with legal regulations for waste dumping or the isolation of contaminated areas is possible only by using bentonite containing sealing systems. The essential properties of bentonite, bentonite containing building materials and the different techniques of making horizontal technical base liners and vertical cut-off walls are explained. For horizontal technical base liners the adsorption ability, the ion exchange capacity and the swelling behavior of bentonites are important. For cut-off walls bentonite controls the rheological behavior of the slurry and is responsible for the low permeability of the hardened bentonite-cement-wall. In the multi-barrier systems of repositories for chemical or radioactive wastes compacted bentonites are considered to be favourable sealing and backfilling materials because of their high swelling capacity, their adsorption and ion-exchange ability and their plasticity in water saturated state.

With increased co-firing of coal and different biomasses in power plants, there is a growing need to study and characterize the produced, often heterogeneous ashes and to assess their utilization as secondary raw materials. In this work, we compare different methods for characterizing the ash compositions. These methods include scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The content of carbonaceous residues in the ashes was measured with CHN Sanalyzer. The methods and the pretreatment required for each of the analysis were studied in detail for three ashes: (1) coal, (2) peat and wood, (3) peat and wood residue with dolomite addition. The limitations of each method will be discussed. This work gives guidelines for selecting a rapid and reliable method for analyzing the suitability of the ash for a particular application.

SMELTING is a thing essential to the end for which ores are sought, for without it every ore is a useless stone. This art is especially needed by those who, drawn on by hope, have mined ores in large quantities with great expense and effort. For this reason it is worth while to use one's wits and, if ordinary ways should not suffice, to consider how to find new ways of smelting the ores in order to extract the metals and to purge them of their earthiness. For this reason I shall now tell you of blast and other furnaces, and I shall also tell you, in order that you may be warned, that whoever wishes to do this well must first look at the nature and quality of the ore. You will already have had enlightenment on this from the experiments on assaying and with this as guiding star it is necessary to make ingenious structures and to provide for-the other needs as necessary, for one ore requires iron and another lead. Since I have already spoken of these in their own places on their ores, it is not necessary at present that I repeat, but here I wish to speak only of copper ore as a companion of silver and gold, and of where art is most required and where difficulties chiefly appear. For these things a machine must be built that is convenient to a good water supply in order to continue the work more easily. Its wheels should be large and easily moved, constructed in such a way that the force of the water lifts the bellows that are placed at the tuyère to direct the blast inside the furnaces that are to smelt the ores. For this, attention must first be given to the site of the machine, the quantity of water, and its fall; then to the wood for building the machine and for making charcoal; then to the stones that are used for the blast furnaces; then to the provision of good bellows that are wide, long, and full in their sides and made of cloth, for the better these are, the more they quicken the power of the charcoal

Fundamentals of cyclones are reviewed briefly, where a typical cyclone is considered. Graphical cyclone data available in the literature have been converted to mathematical equations for convenience. Preliminary selection and design procedures for both cyclones and pumps are provided, and a sample calculation for a hypothetical grinding circuit is covered in some detail. In general, cyclone and pump suppliers should be consulted for definitive design purposes. Some cyclone suppliers currently employ digital computers for definitive design to ensure greater accuracy.

The author is the leader of the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee. The Task Force has developed an Extractive Industries section for inclusion in the International Valuation Standards (IVS). The Extractive Industries Guidance Note provides comprehensive standards for valuation of all minerals and petroleum industry property types for all valuation/appraisal purposes. The document is scheduled for release as an exposure draft for public comment by December 2003, then it will be finalized for publication in the IVS in mid-2004. This paper discusses the content and philosophy of the Extractive Industries Guidance Note within the context of the framework of the IVS. It also discusses the international implications and implementation of this IVS addition.

Water is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity in Australia and the mining community is finding itself competing with pastoralists, domestic consumers and industry for access to what is an essential but finite resource. This paper will provide an overview of various legislative regimes in Australia governing water resources, and will review some of the fundamental issues which should be considered by mining companies when contracting with other parties for the supply of water. The paper will focus on mechanisms to secure access to water for mining purposes, and will deal with the following issues: Grants of water entitlements under legislation û (navigating the legislative requirements necessary to facilitate the taking and use of water for mining activities) The paper will focus on the key legislative requirements for securing access to water in Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, and will examine: compliance with regulatory processes for securing water entitlements through the grant of water allocations, licences and permits, etc; and dealings with water entitlements (ie statutory mechanisms for transferring water entitlements on a temporary or permanent basis). Securing access to water under water entitlements through contractual means. The paper will also review of some of the fundamental issues which should be considered by mining companies when contracting with holders of water entitlements for the supply of water from both groundwater and surface water sources. These issues include (inter alia): securing appropriate rights to take and use water in compliance with relevant legislation, the necessity to protect the validity of underlying water entitlements, ensuring the security of supply for the contract term, access rights affecting water entitlements and other important issues relating to the security of water entitlements for miners.

A three-dimensional, multilayer, mathematical model has been developed for predicting performance by mis-c.ible displacement. Areal and vertical coverage, total gas-oil ratio, propane-oil ratio and oil-recovery factor for the multilayer system are computed as functions of hydrocarbon pore volumes of solvent injected. The technique has been programed for use on the IBM-7090 digital computer and was used in calculating perfortnance for continuous miscible displacement of a five-spot, 50-layer .system. Results reported are based on the use of published laboratory data for a single, uniform five-spot layer. However, the technique is sufficiently generalized to calculate performance of any system of layers of any pattern configuration and mobility ratio, provided data are available to describe perfortilance of a single layer. The technique has also been adapted for predicting oil recovery resulting from various gas-driven slug sizes. The results presented for both continuous and slug-type injection show, that permeability variation has 0 significant effect on oil recovery but that solvent composition, within the range studied, has a lesser effect on oil recovery. INTRODUCTION Experience from many of the miscible-phase displacement projects currently in operation indicates that the injected solvent flows preferentially through the more permeable zones in the reservoir. This preferential solvent flow in the high-permeability streaks results in a reduction of vertical coverage (C,) and an attendant decrease in oil recovery. The multilayer technique presented in this paper uses areal coverage (C.,) data for a single layer from the literature and from laboratory measurements of displacement efficiency (herein referred to as microscopic coverage, C,,) to calculate areal coverage (C,) and vertical coverage (C,) for the multilayer system. Oil recovery for the multilayer system is obtained as the product of (Ca) (Cm) (Cv). It is assumed that C, in a single layer is 100 per cent; therefore, (C,) (Cm) is a measure of oil recovery from that layer. Data presented in the literature for a single layer generally deal only with areal coverage and/or microscopic coverage —but seldom specifically with oil recovery. Nevertheless, this technique is flexible in that either Ca and C,, of an individual layer or a direct measurement of oil recovery for the layer may be used. In developing this technique, the problem arose concerning a method of determining the relative amounts of solvent that will enter each layer during any increment of solvent injected. To solve the problem, a dimensionless equation was derived for expressing solvent injected into each layer as a fraction of total injection. A finite-difference method was applied in integrating the equation to determine oil recovery for the system of layers as a function of pore volumes injected. The technique subsequently was programed for solution on a digital computer. The method was applied to predict performance of a deep California reservoir under continuous miscible displacement and has been extended for calculating oil recovery as a function of slug size for gas-driven slug injection. The technique may be applied to any petroleum reservoir that can be adequately represented as a layered system, by considering permeability variation,1-3 permeability range and average permeability. Each layer is then assigned its appropriate permeability, porosity and hydrocarbon saturation. RESERVOIR VOLUME CONTACTED BY SOLVENT It has been recognized for some time that high microscopic coverage (C,) can be obtained by injecting a miscible agent, such as propane, into an oil reservoir. These high values of C,,, have been demonstrated in the laboratory and are normally between 80 and 100 per cent, depending on solvent and reservoir oil composition as well as on reservoir temperature and pressure. In miscible-phase displacement, because there is no interface between solvent and oil, effective permeability to solvent is the same as that to oil. (This assumes that oil saturation has not changed and that water is immobile.) Consequently, mobility ratio (M) simply reduces to that of viscosity ratio . Report of the Secretary TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-To a Board of Directors keeping in as close touch with all of the affairs under their care as do the Board of Directors of the A. I. M. E., through their monthly meetings, a report of the year's progress is almost superfluous. To the members who read the monthly reports of. the Board Meetings and of the various activities of the Institute as published each month, a yearly report cannot carry much fresh information; yet for both it may be well, as is the custom, to glance over the field of our activities during the past year, and to make an estimate for the year to come. The beginning of 1924 was not propitious for the members of the mining profession, though tonnage production for 1923 had been high and the gross value higher than for several years. The margin of profit had been narrow, prospecting and development were limited, and many of our members were unemployed, or were working in other industries. Toward the end of the year, higher metal, prices were in sight. Old-time optimism began to grow, and it now brightens the outlook for 1925. An excellent barometer of the prosperity of the industry, and that of the Institute, for they go hand in hand, is the work of our Employment Bureau. During the past few months, the percentage of our members for whom openings have been found has been increasing to a marked extent, and many members who had fallen in arrears are placing themselves in good standing. The number of new members joining has remained about as it was in 1922 and 1923. The Directors have reason to congratulate themselves on the interest maintained during a dull period, for it is not humanly possible to take a keen interest in the technology of an industry when our hands and minds are not actively engaged in it Now, with a much brighter outlook, we can look forward to a year of increasing prosperity for the industry and for the Institute.

British Petroleum (BP, 2005), indicates that world reserves for oil to be 1198 billion barrels, for natural gas the equivalent of 1156 billion barrels of oil and for coal the equivalent of 3219 billion barrels of oil. If we take into consideration the mean aver-age annual increase in demand of the last three years for oil, 2.6%, for natural gas, 3.9%, and for coal, 6.6%, then their respective reserves? lifespan are calculated to be 27, 34 and 38 years. Without taking into account their annual increase in demand, lifespan increases to 38, 67 and 161 years respectively. Since zero increase or perpetual increase in energy demands on finite resources is unrealistic the selection of the most suitable energy commodity for power generation rests upon the law of supply and demand of each commodity. This defines its price hence its selection for the production of cheap electricity. When the ratio of supply to demand is less than one, peak production is achieved. Any further increase in demand results in price increase to quench its demand. The Association for Oil and Gas Peak (ASPO) has calculated that when oil demand exceeds 84 million barrels/day, Peak Oil Production will be attained thus prices will start to increase in order to even demand with supply. Correspondingly, Gas Peak Production is expected to take place when demand exceeds 9.1 or 10.2 billion cubic meters/day. Peak Oil production has been calculated to take place in the current year, 2006, while Gas Peak production is estimated to take place between 2020 and 2025 provided that gas will not cover the energy deficit created from the lack of oil otherwise Gas Peak production could arrive as early as 2010. The use of coal for power generation is considered a better alternative than oil and gas if new combustion technologies with an energy efficiency of 43%, Germany, and 47%, Denmark, are adopted. These not only extend the lifespan of coal reserves but reduce also CO2 emissions by 25% and 31%, respectively. In the very near future CO2 sequestration and fixation in deep geological strata will eliminate its emissions thus rendering the use of coal the cheapest feedstock for power generation.
