"THE LORNEX MINING PROJECT is one of several large-tonnage, low-grade operations recently placed in operation in British Columbia. It is located in the Highland Valley in the south central portion of the province. This area is described as a divide valley at an elevation range of 4,000 to 6,000 feet and is situated on the divide between two drainage systems. The major drainage to the west flows into the Thompson River and to the east and south the drainage enters the Nicola River system. This open-ended valley lies between low, rounded mountains in fairly heavily-wooded country. Prior to the commencement of copper mining activities, the first by Bethlehem Copper Corporation Ltd. over ten years ago, the valley was only sparsely settled. A few small ranches were in existence on the several Indian Reserves located along the valley bottomland. There has also been a small amount of logging activity in the valley, although much of the area is covered by dense lodgepole pine which has little or no value to the loggers. As the mining interest mounted with further discoveries of the disseminated copper ore typical of the district, much of the valley was covered with mineral claims and exploration drilling was carried on by several companies at various times. At the time Lornex was preparing to commence major construction work in early 1970, there was very little activity of any kind in the Highland Valley outside of the Bethlehem operation and a small amount of ranching."

Many existing computer planning programs for the mining industry focus either on big mining enterprises with a high production rate or on smaller operations for high value minerals. Big mining enterprises, like the hardcoal company `Ruhrkohle AG' in Germany have their own R&D departments which develop powerful computer programs for planning purposes, partly in co-operation with mining universities. However, there is a remarkable number of small- scale mining operations which are either not able to buy expensive hard- and software or don't have the skills for the operation of extensive software programs. Partly there is also a trend in using rule of thumb calculations rather than computer programs which need a lot of - partly unavailable - data. For this reason a computer program was developed which does not need expensive hardware and software and which can help the planning engineer in the selection of a limited number of possibilities. Until this time the planning engineer established two or three different cases and calculated the results with a pocket calculator. This could last some hours or even some days. Now he or she can use the computer program with a normal PC to compare the cases. All activities are menu-driven. The basis for all, calculations are fixed and variable costs as well as average performance for special activities. The paper gives an example for a possible planning situation in fluorspar mining (originally this program was developed for the fluorspar enterprise Lengenfeld in Germany). It shows the initial situation, the main structure of the program, the input logic and the results. Benefits, limits and possible extensions of the program are discussed.

There are a number of issues associated with freight trains in non-electrified tunnels that are fundamental during the planning and operation of a rail tunnel. During uphill operation, increased air temperatures at the air intake locations of diesel trains can reduce diesel motor efficiency (stalling/choking) and affect HVAC systems. Strong airflows can aggravate fire scenarios due to fanning or water-reactive cargo materials. This paper focuses on the impact of freight trains on tunnel safety concepts, strategies to overcome heat issues at locomotive air inlets and air quality in tunnels operating diesel trains.

Since 2011 mineral cargo shippers shall comply with the Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code regulatory framework, established by the International Maritime Organization. Some mineral cargos may liquefy during passage, under certain conditions, if the moisture content is beyond a certain level, and the cargo shifting may jeopardize the stability of the vessel. For cargos which are susceptible to this phenomenon the IMSBC Code stablishes that the moisture content shall be below the Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) for safe transportation by sea. Iron ore fines TML can be determined through the Modified Proctor/Fagerberg Test for Iron Ore Fines. Knowledge related to the TML has become essential to shippers, and research works related to this parameter are increasingly frequent. However, the typical daily productivity for having a TML result through this method is one up to two samples per executant person, requiring approximately 50 kg per sample. This study presents a practical example of the application of a prediction model for estimating the TML. The model application reduced substantially the laboratory work and sample quantity requirement for obtaining conclusions related to the TML.

A KNOWLEDGE of the fundamental principles of locating, sampling, testing and evaluating materials is essential in prospecting for mineral aggregates. In this discussion, mineral aggregates will be considered sand, gravel, crushed stone and slag that are used as materials of construction. The quantity of mineral aggregates produced in the United States during the year 1935 for such purposes was roughly 165,000,000 tons, about 60 per cent of which was sand and gravel, 37 per cent crushed stone and 3 per cent crushed slag. The total value of this material was approximately $100,000,000. It is apparent therefore that the prospecting for suitable mineral aggregates is of considerable economic importance. In prospecting for mineral aggregates, the methods employed are the same whether the organization is large or small. In the large organization there may be available geologists for locating sources of supply, a land acquisition department to arrange for the necessary options or permits, engineers to do the sampling, a laboratory for testing, and a board of consulting materials engineers to make the final selection. Even small organizations must follow the same general procedure, though the responsibility for the selection of aggregates may rest with one man, who may or may not be an engineer, but who must depend entirely upon his own judgment. LOCATING THE SUPPLY The initial step in prospecting for mineral aggregates is the locating of suitable, adequate and economic sources of supply for the project in mind. Commercial plants in the vicinity should be investigated and a survey made of the existing structures that have been built of aggregates from these sources. If the structures are rather old and show no signs of deterioration, it is fairly good evidence that the aggregate is satisfactory. "Similar to the ethanol program, initiated more than 30 years ago, the recently created biodiesel program in Brazil is expected to rely on private initiative based on agribusiness for vegetable oil production. Campos dos Goytacazes is a large county in the northern of the state of Rio de Janeiro with land still available for oily vegetables plantation in addition to the land traditionally occupied by sugar cane plantation, which is used to produce ethanol. In order to extend the biodiesel program to Campos dos Goytacazes, the State University of Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) is conducting a technical project for the development of the infrastructure for biodiesel production. In this work, the infrastructure based on versatile equipment for biodiesel esterification built in the Center for Alternative Energy of the UENF is presented.IntroductionBiofuels are gaining worldwide attention as a possible economical solution for the prediction of declining reserves of petroleum and related increase in price of barrel. However, nowadays, a more relevant question is the climate changes caused by burning fossil fuels. This is especially the case of coal and petroleum based fuels, mainly gasoline and diesel that propel the majority of vehicles and generate a large amount of CO2 emissions responsible for global warming. This combination of economical an environmental problems is already providing a strong motivation to substitute conventional fossil fuels by renewable biofuels. More than just the interest of the market financial forces, government legislation is imposing a new order that obliges the use of biofuel. Many countries including the USA, the European Community, Japan and Brazil are committed to gradually substitute biofuels into their fleet of vehicles."

Equations are derived to allow for different mean velocities of axial flow for different sizes of particles in fully mixed ball mills. The equations are modified to allow for the exit classification that occurs in grate-discharge autogenous and semiautogenous tumbling mills. An approximate treatment is given that applies for other forms of residence time distribution, provided that the mill contents are close to fully mixed.

This report presents the results of experiments to evaluate different types of mine fire sensors in an underground mine environment using a commercially available atmospheric monitoring system. To determine how well carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors respond for purposes of fire detection, experiments were conducted using test fires of different mine combustibles and for both flaming and nonflaming combustion. The experiments were designed to assess the response of fire sensors to different contaminants and different contaminant levels produced from the test fires. The experiments were performed in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Bruceton Research Facility in the presence of an average ventilating air velocity of 1.6 m/s (315 fpm). Five fire sensor stations were located downstream of the test fire at fixed locations, with each sensor station consisting of four sensors: a CO fire sensor and three different smoke sensors, of which two were evaluated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for intrinsic safety and the third was used extensively in underground mines overseas but not evaluated by MSHA for intrinsic safety. All four sensors were mounted near the center of the entry and in the upper onethird of the entry height. A UL-listed combination ionization and photoelectric smoke sensor was mounted near the roof at the first sensor station and its responses were compared against the responses of the four CO and smoke fire sensors. Sensor response data, contaminant travel times, and the impact of fire on the existing ventilation flow are discussed as they apply to earlywarning fire detection. Of significance in the analysis is the need for performance standards for mine fire sensors in order to provide for consistent and timely early warning of developing fires.

The Cripple Creek and Victor (CC&V) Gold Mine (Cresson Project) (Fig. 1) is undergoing an expansion to extend production to the year 2025. This expansion involves building a high-grade ore mill, another valley leach facility (VLF) for heap leach operations and expanding the overburden storage areas. The current operating pits are progressing downward from the oxide ore into a more sulfide and telluride-rich orebody. There is still oxide ore present in the current pits and planned pits not yet mined. There is an increased need for two recovery processes for these two different types of ore. The key component to this expansion is the high-grade ore mill, which has gravity, flotation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. The mill will be the main recovery process for the higher grade, more sulfide/telluride-rich ore. This ore type does not recover well on the heap leach pad due to its refractory nature. Geometallurgy is vital for ore characterization for the two recovery methods. Geometallurgy helps develop indices that are used to predict parameters that influence overall recovery and production, such as hardness, crushability, grindability, pH fluctuations, gravity (coarse) gold, flotability and cyanidability. Using geology and mineralogy along with other analytical data, geometallurgical models are constructed and applied to the resource block model for proper planning and extraction of the gold. Geometallurgy aims to analyze the variability in the different responses to the parameters to help reduce risk (costs) and optimize recovery (profit).

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

THE determination of the orientation of metal single crystals and the studies of plastic deformation are greatly facilitated by the use of the stereographic projection. To draw a standard projection of the crystal it is necessary to have a tabulation of the angles between the various crystal-lographic planes of the particular crystal studied. Bozorth' has published such a table for the cubic system which can be found in many reference books; such convenient tabulation for the hexagonal metals, however, does not appear to be in the literature, although scores of workers have calculated these angles. Therefore, Table I of angles for magnesium, zinc, and cadmium has been compiled. Since the c/a ratio is different for each of these metals, three separate calculations are necessary. The angles 4 between (HKIL) and (hkil) were calculated by means of the formula: Hh+Kk+½(Hk + hK)1+~3aLl cos The c/a ratios were calculated from data given in the 1948 edition of Metals Handbook. Fig. 1 is a typical (0001) standard projection of zinc. For all practical purposes, it serves for cadmium as well, as can be seen from the table. The REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry) database of open file mining company data, managed by GNS Science, has recently been upgraded with the compilation of additional data, especially for the Otago region (see http://maps.gns.cri.nz/website/minmap). In June 2007, data compiled for the Otago region included more than 2000 stream sediment samples from 19 surveys, more than 800 BLEG (bulk leach extractible gold) samples from 12 surveys and a few pan concentrate samples. The stream sediment samples were typically analysed for Au and As, and in many cases for other elements including Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb, W and Mo. The BLEG samples were analysed for Au and in some cases also for As. The main exploration target was mesothermal gold deposits in the Otago Schist, although one survey of the Otago Peninsula targeted potential gold deposits associated with the Dunedin volcanic complex. Geochemically, the mesothermal gold deposits are characterised by anomalous As and Au, with some also characterised by anomalous W and Sb, and these four elements are the best pathfinders in stream sediment geochemical surveys. The introduction of lower detection limits in Au analyses in the more recent stream sediment surveys and in the BLEG surveys enables the use of this element as the primary pathfinder for mesothermal gold deposits.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of close-range photogrammetry and subsequent stereo digitizing to obtain data from rock fracture roughness profiles. The photogrammetric process yielded results that were acceptable but somewhat inferior to those obtained by a mechanical profilometer. On the basis of this study, further pursuit of photogrammetry as a data collection method in mining is proposed. Fractal geometry was investigated as a means of measuring the roughness of rock fracture profiles. Four fractal algorithms were used: divider method, modified divider method, box method, and spectral method. A comparison of the methods gave ambiguous results. Brown's modified divider method provided the best means of obtaining the fractal dimension. Shear strength estimates were obtained using the parameters of the modified divider method and Myers' Z2 measure. Because of differences in results when comparing the different ways of obtaining the fractal dimension, future users of fractals in studies of rock fractures are advised to cross-check their results carefully.

"The Selmon Expressway includes an elevated structure extending across several miles of weathered karstic limestone geology, and represents a challenge for design because of the high variability of the material and the difficulty in characterizing the strength. The nature of the epikarst in this region of Tampa is such that variability can be extreme within distances of only a few feet. The weathered rock includes extremely soft soil infill within solution features on and within the formation. The limestone is so weathered that coring typically does not yield useful samples for strength testing, and in-situ Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) tests often encounter refusal blow counts. Thus the challenge for foundation design includes two components of reliability risks: the uncertainty associated with the ground conditions at a given foundation location plus the uncertainty associated with the foundation performance at a given location even when the stratigraphy is determined.This paper describes the design approach that has been implemented successfully for two projects at the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway (LRS) in Tampa, Florida: the assessment and remediation of the reversible elevated lane (REL) foundations constructed in 2004, and the elevated expressways widening project constructed in 2012. Included in this design approach is a method developed for computing axial resistance in this local geology. Design for axial loading relies primarily on the development of side resistance, which was considered less subject to performance risks than base resistance. The calculation method incorporates a statistical analysis of SPT data, tempered by engineering judgment, to characterize stratigraphy at a given location into either soil, intermediate geomaterial (IGM) or rock.IntroductionThe subsurface stratigraphy of sites underlain by weathered limestone formations can be highly variable with respect to material layer thicknesses and strengths, even over short horizontal distances. This is the case for much of Florida, and particularly the Tampa area. These conditions present a challenging environment for the design of drilled foundations because of the need for a reliable determination of subsurface conditions at each foundation location, as they relate to the expected axial performance. SUCCESSFUL development of a new process for heat hardening of pellets made from taconite concentrates was announced by Arthur G. McKee & CO., steel plant engineering and construction firm of Cleveland, and Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. An order for the design, engineering, and materials for a plant incorporating the process, has been received by the McKee Co. from the Reserve Mining Co. for its new E. W. Davis Works at Silver Bay, Minn. It is estimated that this plant will cost around $19 million and when in full operation, will turn out 12,000 tons of pellets per day.

This paper demonstrates the method of approach for the optimization of such filters. This does not only incorporate the proven and simple recently developed equations for the calculation of the solids throughput, the residual moisture and gas throughput, but also introduces equations for the calculation of the specific product costs for both vacuum and hyperbaric filtration under consideration of the influences exerted by the filter compressor and a possible thermal drying. An easy-to-use method is offered which incorporates a special graphic representation concerning the plotting of the target parameters in dependence of the pressure difference with which the optimal process pressure difference can be established, independent of the specific cake permeability or product fineness. Finally, the optimization method is exemplarily demonstrated for a concrete application.

In connection with, a stream-pollution-research project, a colorimetric method was developed for concentrations of 1 to 30 p.p.m, of pine oil in water. The method depends on the stable bluish-green color produced when pine oil is reacted with vanillin-hydrochloric acid reagent at 60° C. for 25 minutes. The colorimetric reaction actually determines alphaterpineol, the principal component in pine oil. Some waters may require a special preparation in which ion-exchange resins are used to remove interference. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author wishes to express his appreciation to A. A. The Code for Environmental Management of Marine Mining (the Code) was adopted in 2001 by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) following extensive and wide-ranging consultation, and updated in 2002. The Code provides a framework and benchmarks for development and implementation of an environmental program for a marine exploration or extraction site by marine mining companies, and for stakeholders in governments, NGOs and communities in evaluating actual and proposed applications of environmental programs at marine mining sites. The Code provides for its review by IMMS after five years, with a focus toward possible modifications based on experience with its implementation and in light of developments in the field of marine mining and associated environmental practices, in consultation with the marine mining industry and with other stakeholders at marine mining operations. As the review of the Code is now due, to begin the process, this paper will present an analysis of the Code and initial suggestions for its modification. High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1:100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.
