At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification can facilitate the production of a high-quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot-scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active electric utility storage ponds. The tests demonstrated that a high-quality and consistent pozzolan could be produced using Advanced Pozzolan Technologies' Fast Float™ Process. Along with the pozzolan, the additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and the production of a low sulfur, medium-Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float™ Process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency. Classification controls the particle size distribution, which is critical for achieving early strength;flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I.; and dewatering controls the moisture content.

The use of activated alumina for the removal of selenium from heap leach detoxification solutions was studied at a laboratory scale. Three different aluminas were studied, one unmodified and two chemically modified to function better in a basic pH range. The best performer, Discovery Chemicals DD-6, readily accumulated selenium oxyanions. Furthermore, it could be stripped of selenium and several metals by a mild caustic solution (pH 11.5 – 12.0) and regenerated for further use. Tests using - 600 µm, + 300 µm (28 x 48 mesh) material indicated that 96 % could be removed from solution and using – 1.18mm, + 600 µm (14 x 28 mesh) material 91 % could be removed. However, soluble silica can accumulate on the activated alumina and subsequently interfere with its regeneration and should be removed from the detox solution prior to use of the adsorbent.

A slope stability study for the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines was undertaken to provide Wharf Resources, Inc. with a technical assessment of the stability of the slope for an overall pit slope angle of 60°. A rock analysis of the most critical and persistent combination of discontinuities was carried out using probabilistic methods. A detailed discontinuity mapping and assessment of the rock mass provided the orientation data used in this study. The orientation data were reduced and analyzed to identify the discontinuity sets. A statistical analysis provided information about the distribution of the data. A deterministic wedge stability analysis identified the critical combination of discontinuities; those with a low factor of safety were further studied using probabilistic kinematic and kinetic stability analyses. The results from this approach were used to obtain the reliability or probability of failure of the slopes.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. Several hundred reconnaissance humus samples were collected and analyzed by a combination fire-assay atomic absorption method. Talc is important nonmetallic mineral raw material that is widely used as either the basic raw material, or as filler. This has stimulated its technological investigation, as well as the investigation of its physical-chemical characteristics. In this paper are shown experimentally reached results of the physical-chemical characteristics of the talc during the process of the micronization in high energetic mill. In this paper, the optimum conditions of miconization of talc in high-energy-speed rotary mill and its influence micronization on a degree of Fe2O3recovery by hydrometallurgical methodes, are presented. The X-ray analysis of the obtained products showed that high quality talc with low content of can be obtained by these physical-chemical processes In this paper, the principles and application or fine and ultra-fine grinding high-energy attriton mill with small balls, enabling fast, efficient grinding, low energy consumption, short grinding time and easy handling will be described.

Numerical modelling is an effective aid for the planning and design of underground coal mines. With funding from the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Program, CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has produced a workstation environment which will allow the Australian Coal Mining Industry access to a wide range of numerical design models. The emphasis is on usability and simplicity and the long-term aim is that the techniques should be used routinely at the mine site, so that, in the future, design of a new underground mine will routinely involve modelling of each proposed layout.Each of the five numerical analysis programs, FESOFt, FLAC, MNLAY, FEBLK and UDEC has both strengths and weaknesses. Some analyses with each program demonstrate areas when; observed in situ behaviour in underground coal mines has been successfully modelled, and the results of site monitoring provide a basis for comparison with the predictions of numerical models.

The paper presents an optimal mine planning system designed to simultaneously optimize all the underground mines of large South African gold and platinum mining corporations. The system, code named PlanIT-OPTIM, is a multi-stage solution involving the use of adetailed 3D CAD-based mine planning system (CADSmine™V4). The mine design and scheduling rules defined in CADSmine™ are responsible for simulating mining sequencing, rock mechanics, and ventilation, etcetera. Feasible production ranges generated by CADSmine™ and various high-level mathematical models are used as inputs to a mathematical optimization engine. The optimization engine produces optimal production profiles (i.e. key business indicators such as tonnages, mineral and areas extracted per time period) by maximizing net present value. Other objectives such as profit continuity, production continuity and maintaining available reserves can also be specified as optimization criteria. The final step in the PlanIT-OPTIM process is to convert the optimal production profiles into practical and attainable business plans. This is achieved through the CADSmine™ Detail Optimization Engine that modifies the original CADSmine™ schedule to match the optimal production profiles. With current methods it is an impossible task to find the best business plan for a mining corporation in any reasonable period of time should conditions change (e.g. gold prices, exchangerates, grade estimates, etcetera). The fast turn around time achieved through PlanIT-OPTIM makes it possible to do several ‘what-if’ scenarios in a reasonably short time. PlanIT-OPTIM has already been used in the gold mining industry to find optimal business plans for a mine.

Tailings and water management facilities are essential and integral components of mine and mill operations. They must be managed for the long term in order to ensure that safe and environmentally responsible stewardship is achieved. Toward this end, in 1998, The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) published A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities, which recommended the implementation of a tailings management framework (Figure 1) to integrate environmental and safety considerations into each stage of the life cycle of a tailings facility, from initial site selection and design, through construction and operation, to eventual decommissioning and closure. By February 2000 it was becoming apparent that while mining companies were making significant progress toward implementing and documenting tailings management systems, and integrating them with overall environmental management systems, further effort was warranted in their application at the operational level. In particular, a need was identified for further guidance in preparing manuals that outline procedures for the safe operation, maintenance and surveillance (OMS) of tailings and water management facilities.

Key blocks occur on the surface of excavations and on the walls of the ornamental stones and limestone quarries due to the formation of joint planes, fissures, microfaults and quarrying operations. Movements of these key blocks have produced numerous important failures and are responsible for routine overbreak and rock falls accounting for great costs. The thrust of this work is to demonstrate how to delimit zones of poten- tial key blocks (danger zones) in the wall of Bani-Khalid quarry of lime- stone by using the block theory technique (stereographic projection). The final result of this study indicated that, there are three potential key blocks, the most critical one has been determined. To treat the problem, we sug- gest either to provide timely support to prevent the movement of this block, or to analyze it further in hopes that available friction on the faces will hold it safely in place.

This investigation involves the development of a two-dimensional continuum model for the description of jointed media. Specific application of the model developed here is for the potential geological disposal of radioactive waste in the layered sequence of fractured volcanic tuffs under Yucca Mountain, Nevada. This is currently being considered by the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, administered by the Nevada Operations Office of the U. S. Department of Energy. The work is a direct extension of the previous constitutive model by Thomas (1982) based on the work of Morland (1974). The main feature of Thomas's model includes two parts: a continuum approximation based on average discontinuous displacements across jointing planes within a representative elementary volume, and a material constitutive description based on linear elastic matrix material behavior and nonlinear normal and shear joint behavior between jointing planes. The mathematical descriptions by Morland based on strain partitioning among matrix material and joint sets allow multiple joint sets to be included in the model. However, the initial effort by Thomas to implement Morland's mathematical model included only a single set of joints. To make the material model reflect more realistically the field characteristics, the current work extended Thomas's model to include orthogonal sets of joints. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior is retained in the present model. Joint shear response was treated as linear elastic in the shear stress versus shear displacement relationship prior to attaining the stress level governed by the Coulomb friction criterion. Beyond this critical stress value, a horizontal line is assumed in the work of Thomas for the shear stress versus slip displacement relationship such that the shear stress remains constant while the slip displacement increases. Motivated by experimental observation, the current work generalized the shear response to allow a line with finite slope to govern the slip behavior beyond the critical stress level. The inclusion of an orthogonal joint set led to a fourth order algebraic equation for the calculation of stress increments as compared with a second order equation obtained by Thomas. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior provides criteria which allow the selection of the root that yields result consistent with the loading condition of the problem. The addition of one more set of joints provides the potential to more completely study the interaction of various parameters representing the characteristics of jointed media behavior. Material responses to various loading conditions based on the present constitutive model have been obtained. These results and their comparisons to single joint set results are presented. This paper presents results obtained by consider ation of unstable miscible displacement within a porous medium as a quasi-turbulent displacement process, that is, a process characterized by fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. The instability usually results from the miscible displacing fluid having a viscosity lower than that of the displaced fluid. Such instability is evidenced in suitable experiments by the presence of viscous fingering. A unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement is derived. Parameters in the theory are obtained by empirical means. Although the theory describes an idealized conceptual model, agreement with experiment is quite reasonable up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1. INTRODUCTION Many experimental studies of miscible displacement in porous media have been conducted with prediction of reservoir displacement efficiency as the ultimate objective. Most such studies have utilized lower displacing than displaced fluid viscosity, scaled to potential reservoir fluid pairs. Theoretical approaches have been largely limited to unit viscosity ratios, however, in spite of the necessity for an understanding of the mechanism of the unstable, adverse viscosity ratio displacement process. An obvious reason is the difficulty of describing in mathematical form the viscous fingering characteristic of these conditions. Observation of experiments conducted with dyed fluids in transparent systems suggests an analogy between unstable miscible displacement and turbulent flow in a pipe. In both cases there are fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. An important difference is that flow behavior of interest in the porous medium is entirely transient, contained within a transition zone between displacing and displaced fluids. Transient behavior complicates description in that coefficients in the equations become variables rather than constants. In the study reported here, the analogy with turbulent flow has been used in treating unstable miscible displacement as a quasi-turbulent displacement process. The purpose has been to derive, even if restricted to an idealized conceptual model, a unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement. A relationship meeting these specifications up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1, is presented. One fluctuation parameter in the theory and dispersion coefficients are obtained by empirical means. The idealized theory is compared with experimental results. UNSTABLE MISCIBLE DISPLACEMENT AS QUASI-TURBULENT DARCY FLOW The miscible displacement of one fluid by another within a porous medium is considered in this study. Flow conditions are such that Darcy's law is applicable. It is further assumed that, by the stability criterion proposed by perrine,1 initial flow conditions lie well within the regime of instability. Thus substantial viscous fingering is assured. We wish to show how this flow regime can be represented as quasi-turbulent. That is, the Reynolds number for the established flow conditions is below that for inertial or turbulent flow within a porous medium, and lies within the regime for which Darcy's law is valid. Yet flow behavior can be described as the combination of some relatively simple average result, and characteristic fluctuations that are superimposed on the simpler behavior. Stated another way, flow behavior includes the movement of layers of fluids with different velocities past or over one another. Such descriptions are characteristic of turbulent pipe flow. The fluctuations in the present case are a direct consequence of the local viscous fingering which accompanies the unstable displacement process. Should displacement become stable, fluctuations would die out. It is of particular importance to note that fluctuations such as these can interact in a way that contributes to material transport by the basic flow. The basic transport equations required for engineering calculations must be modified to reflect this fact.

A consolidated porous medium is mathematically modeled by networks of irregularly shaped, interconnected pore channels. Mechanisms are described that form residual saturations during immiscible displacement both by entire pore channels being bypassed and by fluids being isolated by the movement of an interface within individual pore channels. This latter mechanism is shown to depend strongly on pore channel irregularity. Together, these mechanisms provide an explanation for the drainage-imbibition-hysteresis effect. The calculation of steady-state relative permeabilities, based on a pore-size distribution obtained from a Berea sandstone, is described. These relative permeability curves agree qualitatively with curves that are generally accepted to be typical for highly consolidated materials. In situations where interfacial effects predominate over viscous and gravitational effects, the following conclusions are reached. 1. Relative permeability at a given saturation is everywhere independent of flow rate. 2. Relative permeability is independent of viscosity ratio everywhere except at very low values of wetting-phase relative permeability. 3. Irreducible wetting-phase saturation following steady-state drainage decreases with increasing ratio of nonwetting- to wetting-phase viscosity. 4. lrreducible wetting-phase saturation following unsteady-state drainage is lower than fir steady-state drainage. 5. Irreducible nonwetting-phase saturation 101lowing imbibition is independent of viscosity ratio, whether or not the imbibition is carried out under steady- or unsteady-state conditions. Experiments qualithtiveIy verify the conclusions regarding unsteady-state residual wetting-phase saturation. Implications of these conclusions are discussed. INTRODUCTION Natural and artificial porous materials are generally composed of matrix substance brought together in a more or less random manner. This leads to the creation of a network of interconnected pore spaces of highly irregular shape. Since the geometry of such a network is impossible to describe, we can never obtain a complete description of its flow behavior. We can, however, abstract those properties of the porous medium pertinent to the type of flow under consideration, and thus obtain an adequate description of that flow. Thus, the Kozeny-Carmen equation, by considering a porous medium as a bundle of noninterconnecting capillary tubes, provides an adequate description of single-phase flow. With the addition of a saturation-dependent tortuosity parameter in two-phase flow to account for flow path elongation, the Kozeny-Carmen equation has been used to predict relative permeabilities for the displacement of a wetting liquid by a gas. 1-5 It has long been recognized that relative permeability depends not only on saturation but also on saturation history as we11.6,7 Naar and Henderson8 described a mathematical model in which differences between drainage and imbibition behavior are explained in terms of a bypassing mechanism by which oil is trapped during imbibition. Fatt9 proposed a model for a porous medium that consisted of regular networks of cylindrical tubes of randomly distributed radii. From this he calculated the drainage relative permeability curves. Moore and slobod,10 Rose and Witherspoon,11 and Rose and Cleary12 each considered flow in a pore doublet (a parallel arrangement of a small and large diameter cylindrical capillary tube). They concluded that, because of the different rates of flow in each tube, trapping would occur in one of the tubes; the extent of which would depend upon viscosity ratio and capillary pressure. The numerous direct processes which have been patented and brought before the iron-masters of the world, differ materially from that now introduced by Mr. Wilson. After a careful examination of his process, I am convinced that Mr. Wilson has succeeded in producing good blooms from iron-ore, and I think that I am able to point out theoretically the chief reasons of the success of his method. Without going deeply into the history of the metal, I may mention the well-known fact, that wrought-iron was extensively used in almost all quarters of the globe, before pig or cast-iron was ever produced. Without entering into the details of the processes by which this wrought-iron was made, it suffices for my present purpose to say that they were crude, wasteful, and expensive, so that they can IE employed to-day only in a very few localities favored with good and cheap ore, fuel, and labor. The constructiou of larger furnaces and the employment of higher temperatures led to the production of a highly carbonized, fusible metal, without any special design on the part of the manufacturers in producing it. This pig-iron, however, could be used only for a few purposes for which metallie iron was needed; but it was produced cheaply and with little loss of metal, and the attempt to decarbonize this product and bring it into a state in which it could be hammered and welded was soon successfully made. This process of decarbonizatioa, or some modification of it, has successfully held the field against all, so-called, direct processes up to the present time. Why ? Because the old-fashioned bloomeries and Catalan forges could produce blooms only at a high cost, and because the new processes introduced failed to turn out good blooms. Those produced were invariably "red-short," that is, they contained unreduced oxide of iron, which prevented the contact of the metallic particles, and rendered the welding together of these particles to form a solid bloom impossible. The process of puddling cast-iron, and transforming it by decarhonization into wrought-iron has, as everybody knows, been in successful practical operation for many years, and the direct process referred to so closely resembles this, that a short description of the theory of puddling is not out of place here.

In cooperation with the Division of Advanced Automotive Power Systems Development, Environmental Protection Agency, the Bureau of Mines studied a conventional spark-ignition engine as a prime mover for use in a hybrid system. The study involved both steady-state and transient engine operation with ignition timing, air-fuel ratio, exhaust gas recirculation, oxidizing type catalytic converters, engine speed, and power output as variables. Data were obtained from two 1971 model 350-cubic-inch-displacement engines mounted on engine dynamometer stands. When the hybrid engine was operated with an oxidizing catalyst at power output levels required for a 4,000-lb curb weight hybrid vehicle, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions could be reduced to approximately 2.0 grams and 0.3 gram per brake horsepower-hour, respectively. With exhaust gas recirculation, oxides of nitrogen emission levels could be reduced to approximately 1.2 grams per brake horsepower-hour.

Selenium, which is a 6A group element of the periodic table, constitutes about 7x10-5 % of the earth?s crust. Even though selenium is a dispersed element with respect to its commercial exploitation, it is capable of forming number of minerals and nearly forty selenium minerals have been identified, out of which the copper ores are the richest sources of selenium. Electronics industries and glass industries are the major consumers of selenium, while pharma grade selenium used as micronutrient for humans and animals. Various methods have been developed to recover selenium as a by-product from copper anode slime during copper refining. Selenium being amphoteric in nature, it is soluble in both acid and alkali. While acid roast process is widely used, considerable work has been carried out in Russia for recovering selenium through alkali route. This paper enlightens the process developed at Central Research and Development Laboratory, for recovering selenium from decopperised slime through alkali pressure leaching. The decopperised slime is pressure leached with alkali under oxidizing conditions by which almost all the selenium present is converted to alkali selenate, which is easily separable from the rest of the decopperised slime. The solution so obtained is neutralized, during which, most of the impurities are precipitated out. Then selenium is precipitated in its elemental form upon purging sulphur-di-oxide under warm acidic medium. The purity of the selenium obtained by this process is higher than that of the selenium from acid roast process. Moreover selenium can be crystallized as sodium selenate and it can be marketed. The acidic content of the effluent is recovered and it is recycled back to the process. The sodium content of the effluent is converted into high purity sodium sulphate, which is marketable. The hazardous waste containing arsenic is precipitated as its sulphide and can be disposed off as landfill.
