The Viburnum ore trend is the largest, single known ore body of lead in the world. Four well-known mining companies operate in the trend, which is approximately 64 km (40 miles) long and up to 610 m (2,000 ft) wide, located some 121 km (75 miles) southwest of St. Louis, MO. Total production from the mines for 1979 was 33 kt/d (36,000 tons) of ore or 472 kt/a (520,350 tons) of lead and coproduct metal. The district is the number one producer of lead, providing 90% of the United States' output with its coproducts, zinc ranking second, and copper and silver both ranking sixth in total US output. Mining is done in a stratiform deposit approximately 305 m (1,000 ft) in depth with the host rock principally dolomite. Ore is mined in large open stopes by the method commonly referred to as room-and-pillar mining. Mining methods and equipment are fairly similar, with the mines classified as trackless, all mining equipment operates on rubber tires. This paper will present a description of the different methods and equipment used to move ore from the active heading underground to the ore shaft for hoisting to the surface. Basically, three methods are incorporated: front-end loader and truck haulage combination; front-end loader and truck, with main line track haulage combination; and front-end loader and truck, with conveyor haulage combination. The logistics of each system, such as method of use, equipment specifications, ore handling rate, and those cost figures that could be made public, will be included.

INTRODUCTION The Washington, D.C. rapid transit system (METRO) when completed will consist of 98 miles of double track rail. Fifteen miles will be tunneled in rock and 12 large underground rock chambers will be constructed at station locations. The University of Illinois is under contract to Metro to provide observations and instrumentation services in the initial phase of construction. The work is coordinated through DeLeuw, Cather & Co., the General Engineering Consultant to Metro. The program is designed to monitor construction conditions as well as to provide information useful for the design of future rock tunnels and rock chambers in the Metro system. This paper presents the results of observations in the rock tunnels constructed to date. Most of the observations are in a 5000-ft-long, 30-ft-wide, double track tunnel in downtown Washington, D.C. Observations were also made in single track tunnels, shafts, enlargement areas, and pilot tunnels, and are being made in a large rock chamber 700 ft long, 76 ft wide, and constructed at shallow depth in a schistose gneiss. One of the major objectives of the observational program was to determine the orientation and character of joints and shear zones and to evaluate their effect on support requirements for various tunnel orientations and configurations. The consistency of geologic features throughout the Washington area has made the results of the initial study applicable to evaluation of support requirements on future tunnel contracts. The first section of this paper summarizes the geologic conditions in the tunnel and their effect on overbreak and rock movement.

In many papers concerned with fundamentals of the froth flotation process, authors have considered the contents of a flotation cell to be comprised of two immiscible phases, the froth and the pulp. I (Of course, each of these phases is in turn made up of several solid phases plus air and water.) This generalized concept of the flotation system can be extended by considering the cell contents to include two phases: an extracting phase, the air bubbles plus the collector, which removes a selected mineral component from the second phase, the ore pulp. Thus, there is an analogy between a flotation system on the one hand, and chemical extracting systems, such a solvent extraction system or a leaching system, on the other hand. Such extracting systems may be operated in cocurrent or countercurrent fashion. This paper includes first a brief discussion on the general nature of cocurrent and countercurrent operation as applied to froth flotation, and then presents the experimental results of flotation of a specular hematite ore by each method, using a tall oil fatty acid as collector. Cocurrent Flotation A conventional flotation circuit involving roughing, scavenging, and cleaning flotation is illustrated schematically in Figure 1. In such a circuit the col¬lector, or extractant, and new feed ore enter together at the head of the rougher circuit, and flow cocurrently to the scavenger circuit where more collector is added. According to this practice, sufficient collector is added to the head of the rougher (and scavenger) so that the final tailings are of low enough grade to be discarded. Since the flow of collector and ore is cocurrent, the process consists of single stage contact between the extracting phase and the ore pulp. If the scavenger concentrate is recycled to the head of rougher, the overall circuit has some of the characteristics of countercurrent flow. Data on the kinetics and thermodynamics of dephosphorization are analyzed in terms of the dynamic partition ratio, determined by a combination of slag thermodynamic properties and the balance of oxygen supply and consumption. A recently developed phosphate capacity correlation is combined with data on kinetics to quantify the most significant parameters in controlling the interfacial oxygen potential. The role of slag composition, entrained gas fraction and temperature are discussed in addition to metal carbon and sulfur content. It is demonstrated that the mass transport of oxygen in the slag is enhanced by factors increasing conductivity and inhibited by entrained gas. The mass transfer of phosphorus in the metal is described considering surface renewal induced by CO bubbles.

As a continuation of previous work, further tests have been carried out to recover silver from the residues obtained in a zinc jarosite process. Selective flotation has been performed with different reagents, and ?cleaning steps have been introduced to upgrade the silver concentrate. Leaching of crude residues, as well as flotation tailings, has been carried out with cyanide and thiourea. Finally, the different beneficiation methods are compared, and the industrial aspects? of their application are reviewed.

Coaxial cable structures form the subject of substantial theoretical and experimental investigations either directly related, or which can be extrapolated, to the communications needs and environments of U.S. coal mines. Communication systems based on "guided" waves, of which "leaky" coaxial cables are one implementation, are attractive candidates for providing a range of communication functions primarily along haulage ways, and possible also within sections up to the working face. (However, there are still strong reservations as to whether a practical coaxial cable sys tem could provide sufficient communications coverage within a section. ) In this Part, we present the results of some theoretical calculations of the performance of leaky coaxial cable communication systems. We also analyze the applicability of the theoretical and experimental results obtained by other researchers to the needs of U.S. coal mines. In particular, this investigation has been focused on the utility of relatively low cost, conventional, flexible, coaxial cable at frequencies covering the LF through HF bands and extending into the lower part of the VHF band, as opposed to relatively high cost, special semi-rigid, coaxial cable* at frequencies in the VHF and UHF bands. There are three major design alternatives for coaxial cable communication systems considered in this chapter: • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with high surface transfer impedance (holes in outer conductor, e.g., braid construction). • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with repeaters (U.K. experiments). • No base station, direct communication via a coaxial cable with periodic radiative structures.

"The use of helmets during the war has accentuated interest in the advisability of using stiff hats in mines to protect the miners against falling rocks. About forty per cent of the accidents in mines are due to falling rocks or roof. A large number of these accidents could be prevented if the miners wore stiff hats or helmets.The use of head protective devices in minas is not new, for they have been in use for many years in Europe and in the Lake Superior District in the United States. In practically all of the mining districts in Europe stiff hats of some kind are required by the mine management. George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, reported that in Germany, Belgium, and France stiff hats made of papier mache or felt rosin are in use. Similar hats are generally employed in the Lake Superior District. In building the subways of New York and Philadelphia it was the practice of engineers and workers to let the hair grow very long and to wear a close fitting cap or felt hat. In Germany the hats are high like the military helmets, whereas in France and Belgium they fit more closely to the crown. In England the practice is mixed. As a rule the miners use soft padded caps, but in Yorkshire many of the miners use sole leather, tight-fitting caps of jockey pattern with the seam forting a little ridge down the middle of the cap. These hats are very useful allow thin beds of coal, as in crawling one is very likely to strike his head a sharp piece of rock or on a timber. Of course, such mishaps are more likely to occur to a man not familiar with the mine. It must be admitted such hats do not stick on well, though this is usually due to their not being especially fitted. The German hat is particularly unsuited to an American-shaped head.It is interesting to note that on the continent tight cotton caps are generally worn over the hair and under the hard hat. This is a measure for cleanliness which is excellent. In low beds of coal share much crawling on hands and knees is necessary the dirt and coal dust sift down, making the miner black and dirty. In metal mines stiff hats are of especial use in shaft work; also in raises or high stapes. A small fragment of rock falling some distance either down a shaft or raise would kill a man if it struck him squarely on the head. A stiff hat or helmet may protect him and save his life. At a station in a shaft where men are loading the cage or skip, some kind of adequate head protector should be compulsory. A head-protecting hat or cup which is also a good insulator should be worn where there is danger of striking one's head against a wire carving an electric current."

THE Board of Directors of the Institute has authorized the appointment of a committee to draw up rules of procedure under which awards can be made from time to time to petroleum engineers for outstanding contributions to the art of finding and producing oil and gas. These awards will 11e sponsored by the Petroleum Division and are the first recognition by any professional society of outstanding achievement in "oil mining." They will be in the form of either a gold medal, scholar- ship, or other suitable prize. The awards will be financed from the income of the Anthony F. Lucas Memorial Fund, which was started about fifteen years ago, shortly after' his death, by admirers of Captain Lucas.

"Coal mining is a thriving industry and 53% of the coal mined in South Africa is used for electricity generation. Mechanization has made coal mining more efficient, but fines generation has subsequently increased. Up to 6% of the run of mine material can report to the -200 µm fraction. Common problems associated with fines handling include dust formation, storage problems, and high moisture levels. A method to turn this material into a saleable product instead of stockpiling it can add value to a company.Briquetting is a pressure agglomeration method where loose material is compacted into a dense mass (FEECO International, 2014). The briquettes must be able to withstand rigorous handling and transport operations without disintegrating. This study aims to investigate the optimum binder and moisture conditions required to produce a mechanically strong briquette using two different binders - a PVA powder (binder A) and a starch powder (binder B).It was found that for binder A the optimum moisture level was 12% to 14%. At this moisture level the greatest compression strength gains were observed, and low amounts of fines produced in impact and abrasion tests. The minimum amount of binder added while still obtaining a strong briquette was 0.5% binder A. For binder B the optimum moisture level was also 12% and the minimum amount of Binder B to be added was found to be 1%. Briquettes that were dried outside reached their peak strength after about four days, whereas the briquettes that dried inside took about 20 days to reach their strength plateau. Hardly any degradation took place on the surface of the binder A film after exposure of 300 hours of artificial weathering. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that neither binder A nor binder B will add to the ash content of the coal fines, as both binders totally decompose above 530°C.Binder B yielded stronger briquettes after 15 days and also generated less fines. Injuries and fatalities resulting from roof falls are still a major concern in U.S. coal mines, and many researchers are focused on developing meaningful approaches to minimize this hazard. In the United States, coal mine roofs can vary widely in composition, geometry, and inherent heterogeneity, leading to a wide array of different roof fall failure types. Researchers frequently employ numerical modeling tools to reproduce this physical phenomenon and provide key guides to engineers regarding roof conditions and control as long as the input data and constitutive relations are appropriately selected. Simulating such complexity requires expertise and constitutive models that adequately simulate roof behaviors. However, the currently available constitutive models have shortcomings in capturing some of the roof fall failure types common in underground coal mines, such as guttering. A new constitutive model is developed to address the shortcomings of constitutive models commonly used for coal roof stability analysis. The constitutive model developed in this study combines the anisotropic-elasticity and nonlinear strain-softening responses. In addition, the developed constitutive model can simulate up to three different joint sets implicitly, allowing for use in both continuum and discontinuum settings, and can be used in both Lagrangian finite-volume and distinct element method codes of Itasca. First, the mathematical expressions of the model are provided. Afterward, the validation phase of the developed model that covers comparisons with analytical solutions and those of existing models (e.g., anisotropic elasticity, ubiquitous-joint, and bilinear strain-hardening/softening ubiquitous-joint plasticity) is presented. Finally, a hypothetical coal mine roadway facing high horizontal stress is simulated. The presented model successfully shows three distinct stages of a cutter roof in a shale roof: (1) initiation of shear cracks at the rib– roof intersection, (2) extension of cracks deeper into the roof (i.e., above the roof bolt length horizon), and (3) cantilevered roof. It is demonstrated that the presented constitutive model has the potential to help future researchers in simulating various roof responses.

With prevailing assumptions that plentiful domestic coal reserves will be available for meeting our Nation’s expectations for on future low emission, coal-fired power plants, major government funding in Clean Coal Technology, and Carbon Sequestration Programs continues to be aggressive. However, after more than a decade of cutbacks in funding for domestic coal-related programs and personnel, there is a growing concern that adequate quantification and qualification of our Nation’s coal reserves is increasingly being compromised. This paper will define the growing concerns and dichotomies that continue to increase, and address the decreasing number of fossil fuel mapping and assessment programs by Federal and State programs.

The ammonium sulphate process for recovering alumina from clays was proposed by Rinman, Buchner, and others many years ago, and more recently various modifications have been investigated both here arid abroad.l-Is The process, as it is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines, involves the following essential steps: (I) sulphating the alumina in the clay by baking with ammonium sulphate at approximately 4m°C., (2) leaching with water to extract aluminum sulphate and ammonium sulphate, (3) crystallization of ammonium alum, (4) conversion of the alum to aluminum hydroxide by the ammonia gases given off during the baking, and (5) calcining the aluminum hydroxide to alumina. The over-all reaction between kaolinite (the most important alumina mineral in most clays) and ammonium sulphate during the baking step may be expressed as follows: Al2O8.2SiO2.2H2O + 4(NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 + 6NH3(g) + SH2O(g) + 2SiO2 [i] There is definite evidence. as is shown later. that the aluminum occurs in the baked product as anhydrous ammonium alum rather than as aluminum sulphate, provided the baking temperature is not much above 4o0°C. It is probable that the reaction takes place in the following steps: (NH4)2SO4 = NH3 -(- NH4HSO4 [2] Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O + ;}NH4HSO4 = A12(SO4)3 + 3NH3 + 5H2O + 2SiO2 [3] A12(SO4)3 + (NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 [4] In onc modification of the process, the ammonium sulphate is first decomposed according to Eq. z, and the clay is treated with the resultant ammonium acid sulphate. Reaction I is highly endothermic. On the basis of the best available data, the following values have been estimated for the changes in heat content and free energy in calories per mol: -AH = 331,040 - 34T -AF = 331~040 - 78.3T log T - 671.8T The heat required' at 25OC is 320,900 cal. per mol, or 5650 B.t.u. per pound of alumina. The theoretical equilibcium pressure of NHa, based on the free-energy equation given above, increases very rapidly as the temperature rises above 3o0°C., and reaches one atmosphere at 43s°C. The natural semiconducting mineral rutile and sphalerite exhibited highly photocatalytic activities on degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The isomorphous substitutions of host metal ions by foreign ions and other defect states in natural semiconductors altered the band structure, decreased the intrinsic band gap, and then made them very attractive for solar energy utilisation. Our study indicated that natural semiconductor minerals might be suggested as a new class of cost-effective and solar light-responsive photocatalyst.

The models for particle composition prediction that have been put forward are limited to simple textures and lead to an independance of grade with respect to particle size in broken ore. A presentation is made of a modification in texture description; binary textures, in which each subeonstituent has its own breakage characteristics are introduced. The calibration of the textural model can be made using heavy liquid separation results. The application to the case of coal is presented. Coal washability data present spe¬cial difficulty due to the distribution in the specific gravity of coal, which must be taken into account. Coal s.g. distribution is taken as a generalized exponential distribution. Model calibration is then possible and is shown to be in good agreement with experimental data.

Based on the distribution ratios of several impurities between the slag and molten copper determined previously, the effectiveness of this process is discussed using a mathematical model and confirmed experimentally. According to the model, the slag consumption to remove Sb to a required level in case of the counter-flow batch process with 3 reactors is calculated to be around 30 % of that in the case of an ordinary batch process, where pure sodium carbonate is used as a slag at every stage.

The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) was founded in 1969 when a group of scientific and technical societies organized an annual conference and exhibition dedicated to technologies used in the offshore oil, gas and mining industries. Currently, OTC is sponsored by 12 industry organizations and societies. These include: American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG); American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE); American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME); American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); ASME International Petroleum Technology Institute; Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Oceanic Society (IEEE-OES); Marine Technology Society (MTS); Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG); Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME); Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME); Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE); and The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS). OTC also has two endorsing organizations, the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) and the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA), as well as 6 supporting organizations that include the American Petroleum Institute (API), the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMEST), the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC), the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA), and the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA). From its earliest years, the OTC has been held during the first week of May in Houston, TX, initially at the Albert Thomas Convention Center where OTC?69 drew 4200 attendees and 200 exhibitors. As the conference grew and became established as the world?s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection, the venue was changed to the Astrodomain Complex, with technical paper sessions and most exhibits taking place in the Astro Hall. The numbers of attendees and exhibitors varied somewhat over the years, primarily in accordance with the fortunes of the international oil and gas industry. At its height in the early 1980s, OTC registered attendance exceeded 100,000 with more than 2500 exhibitors forcing expansion into the Astro Arena and even the Astrodome.
